5 out of 5 stars cool songs.......2007-01-11

This is a pretty good soundtrack. I remember seeing the movie at the theatre in 1989. The music reached at and grabbed you. The soundrack is now here. This gets high marks.

5 out of 5 stars A Surprisingly Innovative and Sweeping Score!.......2005-11-17

This film, based on the comic book character of the same name, was brought to the screen in 1989 with Dolph Lundgren in the lead role. It was violent, raw and stylish, even though it was not what some comic book fans expected, many having already determined how Castle should have been shown on film. Another problem was that because of studio problems, the film was not released widely in theaters and was not brought to video until years later. About 5 years ago, it was economically released on DVD, but without the stereo soundtrack, which naturally weakened the impact of the film and sadly, this brilliant score.

Composer Dreith has long been working with an impressive list of composers, such as John Williams, James Horner, Eliott Goldenthal, Hans Zimmer, Mark Shaiman, and others, as an orchestrator and conductor. He has worked on such films as "Jurassic Park", "Sleepless in Seattle", "Misery", "The Addams Family", "Aliens 3" and many others. He is no novice in the world of motion picture scoring and this CD contains about 20 minutes of interviews with Dreith and the director Mark Goldblatt, which will give those interested in motion picture scoring real insight to how music is produced for film. There is also a beautifully produced full-color 16-page booklet included in the jewel box.

Here is one of the rare Dreith scores, and though the film was not a major blockbuster, Dreith pulls out all the stops on his creativity, foresight and ingenuity. From the opening theme, a combination of rich orchestral passion mixed with electronic detachment (much like the mind of our anti-hero), all the way through this emotional, frightening and fascinating tapestry of sound. The film was only about an hour and a half, yet here is a score of nearly an hour. This score truly narrates the emotional impact and motivations not shown in the characters and fills in the blanks for some of the more quiet characterizations. One can almost feel introspection of Castle, and the heavy metal of the sewer where he lives, yet those French horns also seem to refer to hope in the light from the streets above. I was particularly taken with the brilliant string passages on "Choose Your Weapon" and "Wake Up", which I continue to play over and over. These truly convey Castle's character as relentless and determined. On "Path to Tanaka" and "Pain in the Neck" you will be treated to Dreith's firey interpretation of Japanese instrumentation and phrasing.

It is clear that Dreith is influenced by some mentors... particularly John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. I am reminded occasionally of the scores from "Towering Inferno", "Chinatown", "Earthquake" and "Planet of the Apes"... yet the composer surely has a sound and style uniquely his own and "The Punisher" certainly showcases this. I understand this southern California native is now composing more of his own music. He certainly seems to want to carry on the legacy of great film music began by Steiner, Korngold, Rozsa and Bernstein... and I welcom it. Many action films of the 80s and 90s used popular songs and scores based on rock music... and they now appear terribly out-of-date and clumbsy. This score seems as fresh and exciting as ever. I hope they re-release this motion picture with a stereo score, so we can appreciate the film as it should be. Though not a monumental achievement cinematically, this score certainly makes the film memorable musically.

5 out of 5 stars Failing To Die.......2004-08-24

I see Forman's singular self-titled albumn is available on CD through a Japanese print. He is hardly the household name he was at my address in 1976 when this disc rarely left the player. It transported me to a landscape, both physical and psychological, on the edge of alienation; a zone I related to vicariously via films like Cimino's,'Deerhunter', or literature like Herr's,'Dispatches or Tobias Wolff's, 'Paroah's Army'.I still hear post-Vietnam pain and loss here; particularly the husky slick on 'Smokey China Tea,'(co-written by David Levine), the edgy consolation of 'Endless Waters,' the damage when too much accelerated experience has imploded in 'Roasalie', the regret & nostalgia attending 'Winnsboro, Louisiana' & from 'The Seven Sisters'(also co-penned by Levine) the confession 'I tore out my living heart/And offered it to anyone/Laid it gently in the fire/O,how much it had become./Here are all the captured hunters/who were blinded by your eyes/here are all the silent singers/Here where love can never die/ I am not the first or last/To drown myself & fail to die. This summed to a real and painful recoil from displacement after returning from the battlefields. Well I don't know what happened straight after this elegiac collection dropped so quickly from sight. I now know he has sought to endisance himself from the work, re-emerging as Little Isidore on 'Largo' (A project imbued with epic rear vision that suits Forman's sensibility). It's kind of neat that a country in Asia Pacific, one involved in a war with the U.S.A, has sought to enhance the life of this mini masterpiece.

      5 out of 5 stars Not Available.......2003-12-13

I ordered this from Amazon in May, it took until September to be notified that it isn't available any more. Why they didn't take the obvious next step and stop offering it is beyond me.
The star rating is for the artistic merit, not consumer information.

      5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-11-27

Bought the LP in 1976....ran it into the ground...although the
vinyl is almost unlistenable, now, the music still holds up!!!!
"One Fine Day" is worth the price of admission alone!!!! This guy
is a genius...whatever happened to him?(Little Isadore????)My only beef is, I ordered the CD, it was charged to my account and
a month later I still don't have it...this has been happening to
me ALOT lately and I'm not thrilled....I know the music is great...the service is lousy....I'll wait...and wait...and wait..
it'll be worth it, if it ever arrives....!

4 out of 5 stars Great lost disc.......2002-12-10

This is a great, moody, album, from a fine singer-songwriter. Foreman's voice slides gracefully from sweet and high a likable growl. To get a cheaper sampling of Foreman's voice and talent for odd lyrics check out the terrific various artists project "Largo." He's also active in a 1950s style rock 'n' roll/R&B group Little Isidore and the Inquisitors. This is an artist who dearly deserves to be brought up from the underground.

5 out of 5 stars Missing in action?.......2002-11-18

David Forman's neglected classic was my favourite album the year of its release, 1976. It transported me to a landscape, both physical and psychological on the edge of alienation. It was regarded at the time as an expression of post-Vietnam experience, something I could only relate to vicariously via art like Forman's, films like Cimino's 'Deerhunter', or literature like Herr's 'Dispatches' and Tobias Wolf's'Pharoah's Army'. Forman still gets an outing on my turntable, and has stood the test of the 26 years since its release, as a homage to an acute world weariness, and a yearning for simpler and more innocent days. I recall a Rolling Stone reviewer likening him to Randy Newman regards his delivery. The comparison is superficial. I admire much of Newman's work, but fail to be as moved by the more self-conscious posing of his artistry. Forman felt and sounded like the real and painful thing, recoiling from the recognition of displacement after returning from the battlefields. Pity a USA distributor couldn't pick up the release and make it a more accessibly priced piece of history. And where is Forman today with that brilliant talent?
