2 out of 5 stars The CD that will never arrive..........2007-02-25

I ordered this CD on Nov 8, 2006. Although at that time it was listed as an item "In Stock" - and has been listed as such ever since - it has not shipped yet (it is the end of February 2007 now). Amazon has asked for my approval for 6-week delays a couple of times, which I have given each time - what else could I do?

Now, according to this product page, the item is still "In Stock". Is it possible that Amazon has not been able to update its database since last November to reflect the actual availability of this album?

So this is a warning to other would-be buyers: don't be surprised if an "In Stock" item - which should be mailed in 1-2 days after the order is placed - fails to arrive for many, many weeks...

(As for the rating: 4 stars for the album, 0 stars for order processing, hence 2 stars.)

2 out of 5 stars Ya I gave it two stars.......2007-01-20

The only song I was interested in was "I touch myself ".
Seems this CD was more an experiment.
You most likely would like only one tune as well.
I feel someone should have played with Her Lyrics a bit more.
The Band members sounded like Robots with no spirit or Soul.
But I really Liked her voice just wished the rest of the tunes Bounced as well as " I Touch My Self "

5 out of 5 stars Different, but a success.......2005-01-25

By the time this album came out, gone were the days of Christina Amphlett wearing rat pins, frumpy schoolgirl outfits and a mass of seemingly unwashed hair. She was now a full-fledged sexpot, and wasn't afraid to show it.
That is why it was hard to dive into this album without expecting disappointment. The band worked so well before that this one, with all of its changes, had to be a step down, right? Not really.
While it's not as good as "Desperate," "What a Life" and "Temperamental," "diVINYLS" is a stellar collection of music. The songs are sleeker and sexier than before, really giving Christina a chance to show off her rocker babe charm.
"I Touch Myself," the one everybody knows, is a perfectly crafted pop song. It is disappointing, though, that this is the one they're known for as it is rather unrepresentative of their overall sound.
"If Love Was a Gun" is a beautiful slow song in which Christina goes from sounding fragile and on the verge of tears to like an enraged siren. "I hope there's an angel watching over you," she repeats with conviction, and you can't help but wonder whether she means it as a heartfelt prayer or a bitter warning.
"Follow Through" is a song that really grows on you -- at first it seems rather unexciting but after a few listens you start to feel it. It's got a mellow vibe that's complimented perfectly by Christina's pensive lyrics and subtle vocal delivery.
"Bless My Soul" is the closest thing to a real rocker here, and with its tongue-in-cheek rock-n'-roll-is-sin-lyrics, it is a lot of fun.
"Love School" and "Lay Your Body Down" are melodic, moody and sexy. If you never saw Ms. Amphlett as a temptress, take a listen to these.
"Make Out Alright" and "Bullet" are smooth mid-tempo numbers, while "Need a Lover" has a toe-tapping groove set to whimsical lyrics regarding Christina's search for romance through fairy-tale circumstances.
There is nothing here that has the urgency of "Boys in Town," the new wave melody of "Only Lonely," or the hard-hitting rock of "Temperamental," but it is nevertheless an essential Divinyls recording. The other albums are Christina straddling the line between holding your hand and spitting in your face. Here, she is giving you a nice big kiss.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2004-10-17

Yet another sparkling gem, this self-titled album FINALLY brought the DiVinyls a portion of the acclaim and success in North America that all their albums should have received worldwide. Some have complained that the sound of this album is different from previous albums, ignoring the fact that "What A Life" was a bigger departure from "Desperate" than this is from "Temperamental" and that all the DiVinyls albums have a different sound from each other. Some have even called this a sell-out. Alright, I try never to tear down other people's opinions on albums or movies or whatever, even when they're trashing something I really love, but I have to take strong issue with this. First of all, the diVinyls NEVER sold out anything, and anybody who knows anything about all the ridiculous troubles they've had with various record labels for not going along with the trends du jour knows this. This is a band that during legal arguements with one record label that prevented them from profiting from any new material they put out for a few years, contributed new songs to film soundtracks and authorised the recording and selling of live "authorised bootleg" concert performances without receiving a cent so they could continue giving their fans at least some new material. And this is a band that has always exerted more say on record covers, music videos, and so on than most bands on overly controlling 'major' record labels. Second of all, at the time this album was recorded and released, most all that was getting major airplay on radio and tv was rap, grunge, and the 'modern' style of country. No disrespect whatsoever to any of those genres, but this album doesn't exactly fit those molds. Some hard rock was still getting major play, like AC/DC, KISS, Guns'N'Roses, and a few others, but this album actually sounds Less like any of those than "Temperamental", which was at least somewhat in that vein (and excellent). The fact is, the self-titled album was moving away from almost all major trends of its time, and the fact that "I Touch Myself" got significant airplay on this continent and "Make Out Alright" got a fair bit too is a minor miracle on par with Rammstein's "Du Hast" making it onto the mainstream airwaves in 1998.

Now that I've got that off my chest, I can concentrate on the album itself. It's a brilliant, stunningly sexy eminently classy and emotionally diverse masterpiece that gives huge credibility to the whole rock genre. "Make Out Alright" is the album's foreplay, as perfect an opener to set the tone as any album opener has ever been. "I Touch Myself" indeed has a double meaning (even if the critics were never able to see it), as much a spiritual rocker about how one gets to truly know one's own being by being in love with another, as it is a celebratory, non-self-concious, unashamed halleleujah to (...). "Lay Your Body Down" just soars with Christina Amphlett's trademark irresistable come-ons, generously garnished at the end with a dose of play-coyness. "Love School" is a slower and somewhat melancholy change of pace that still sizzles; "Bless My Soul It's Rock'n'Roll" is an energetic ride that is highlighted by Amphlett's vocal quirks and powerhouse singing throughout and Mark McEntee's exceptional lead guitar work. "If Love Was A Gun" is the saddest song on the album, but very powerful and touching in its theme of tender concern toward an ex-flame despite being the one left behind. "Need A Lover" returns the fun and the sexuality to the album with Christina's lusty lamentations to fairy godmothers, wizards and various other potential benefeactors to deliver to her a soulmate/bedmate. "Follow Through" makes use of an obscure instrument called a wah-tar to give the song its unique flavor, and is an inspirer in somewhat the same line as "Take A Chance" (off "Desperate"). This is followed, believe it or not, by a short piece called "Café Interlude" that is just accordion and background chatter and bustle in French, but actually fits in very well with the rest of the album! I guess it helps that I enjoy accordion music anyway; some rock fans probably don't and won't be as impressed as I was at its inclusion; I thought it was very innovative. "Bullet" follows - Chrissie's vocals are the highlight as with all DiVinyls songs but the unusual, extremely well-played drums by Charley Drayton are a close second, playing a more defining role than the guitars by McEntee, the fine bass work of Randy Jackson and the flawless hammond organ work by Benmont Tench. "I'm On Your Side", a very gentle, very powerful ballad, is simply one of the most beautiful expressions of love on any album, in terms of both velvet lyrics and soul-felt vocals, with outstanding acoustic guitar playing.

I can't help but close this writeup by expressing my deep appreciation for the CD's photo content, both on the cover and in the booklet. For those who can only see the front cover, the back cover and the interior pics of Chrissie are just as hot. The band's only other permanent member from day one, guitarist McEntee, is also in a couple of the liner photos; fine fellow, I'm sure, but his photos just don't have the same effect on me as the sight of Miss Amphlett decked out in Nothing But Net :)

4 out of 5 stars Polished mainstream effort has its moments, but..........2004-03-18

After Temperamental failed to make a dent on US shores, the Divinyls signed onto Virgin Records and released their eponymous album. The result was a polished, sometimes successful, but watered down sound that lead singer Christina Amphlett somehow managed to wrap her rough but twangy vocals around, "ays" pronounced like "eyes," on occasions, and guitarist Mark McEntee provide some decent riffs that gave the Divinyls their signature sound. The bassist Randy Jackson, who plays with them...could it be the same big black guy who played for Journey on Raised On Radio?

Despite "Make It Alright," being a not-bad medium rocker, it's clear that the Divinyls have lost the edge that typified songs like "Only Lonely" and "I'll Make You Happy." Their only big hit from here was the mildly provocative "I Touch Myself." Definitely mainstream pop, and written by Billy Steinberg and T. Kelly no less, with Benmont Tench on Hammond organ. He pops up in other songs later. A good but not great song. But speaking of Steinberg/Kelly, they provide the acoustic ballad that closing the album. "I'm On Your Side" is another what-went-wrong between us, but they're still together, so that makes it a song of moral and emotional support. Now this song's one of the better tracks.

"Lay Your Body Down" sports a bouncy swaying like "Trampled Underfoot," with poppified Sabbath riffs at times, and goes into erotic/bondage territory, with oh-so-clever lines as "lashings of a recipe" and "I'm whipping something up." She goes into dressing into black, or "so wicked, I give myself a fright" to wearing nothing at all.

"Love School" is a melodic ballad calling for a detached lover to go to the title established, especially by someone sensual and electric demanding sensitivity. That's three in a row for songs like that--Ms. Amphlett's sensuality has not dimmed a bit, it seems.

Bless my soul, it's old-style Divinyls! A roughened voice belting out the opening lyrics, followed by some hardy guitar, with the frantic pace of liberating old-style rock and roll mixed with punk, and... "Bless My Soul (It's Rock-N-Roll)." Probably the best song here.

Amphlett minimizes the impact of the end of a love, arguing that "If Love Was A Gun" that it "wouldn't hurt more than it's done." She seems to harbour no ill feelings, just melancholy upon the parting, singing "I hope there's an angel watching over you," later adding "many watching over you." Another mid-paced ballad with piano and organ by Tench.

Tench also helps out on the slow rocker "Need A Lover," which takes themes from fairy tales such as magical mirrors, genies in bottles, to find a cure for ruling in bed alone each night. When she sings "I wish someone would come along and wave their magic wand," I say a loud "oh yeah!"

Make the most of life, even if for one instant, is behind "Follow Through," with the dual yin-yang aspect of a rising sun also being one that sets, depending on which hemisphere one's in.

Not as bad as I originally deemed it, saved by Amphlett's rough and ready vocals, some sensuous songs, and the Steinberg/Kelly songs, but it's like drinking store-bought orange juice after being used to freshly squeezed OJ.

5 out of 5 stars Power-Punk-Pop at it's Best!.......2005-08-28

Australia has produced some fine bands (Bon Scott's AC/DC) & some absolute rubbish (Men at Work), but none can compare to Christina Amphlett, "The Wonder From Down Under" & her band Divinyls. This is the best of their releases, a truly amazing experiment in powerful, energetic Punk/Pop that has never been duplicated - & judging by the state of music these days - never will!!
This is one of my favorite albums of ALL TIME! "What A Life!" is one of those rare examples of a record that kicks ass from opening note to glorious conclusion; every song, every chord, every lyric intelligently crafted by talented musicians who know how to get a point across to the listener without being pretentious or overbearing. Amphlett's delivery is caustic yet invigorating, raw yet poignant, sweet & sexy yet sinister all at once - a feat only a rare few can attain. Each tune has its own unique identity, yet they blend together seamlessly as if parts of a "concept" album. The instruments accent each other perfectly, & when combined with Amphlett's power they resemble a hard-rocking blues band more than a punk outfit (a la Patti Smith or Concrete Blonde). This record must be listened to in its entirety to get the full impact - cherry-picking is for 80 IQ & under lame-oids!
MTV & VH-1 classify Divinyls as "One-hit Wonders", which shows how much they know about music! Trust me - this band is HOT!! I highly recommend EVERY DIVINYLS RECORD, but this is the best of the best! Do yourself a favor & add "What A Life!" to your collection - you'll never watch music television again!!

5 out of 5 stars SuperSexy Power Rock/New Wave Hybrid.......2005-07-08

The second full-length album by the DiVinyls, this is the 'International' Edition of "What A Life" that was released for the world at large and not the original Australian version, which is apparantly unavailable anywhere on CD. The two differ in this disc's exclusion of the tracks 'Talk Like The Rain', 'Old Radios', 'Para-Dice' and 'What A Life', and the abscence of 'Don't You Go Walking', 'Motion' and 'Casual Encounter' from the old original version. This disc is perfect in the songs it has, but somehow somebody has to get those other tracks out on CD format.

Onto the disc at hand: "What A Life" is definately the most New Wave-ish of the DiVinyls's albums, mixed with more of a power rock/hard rock style than New Wave usually has (I'm not really an expert on the style but I have heard and liked some of it). And it's quintessentially DiVinyls, having that unique intangible that's at the core of all their albums, whatever style they're playing, that's always taken bits and pieces of the best of so many genres and subgenres until the DiVinyls almost constitute their own genre.

"Pleasure And Pain" is one of the least typical musically of the group's output, probably because ('cover songs' excluded) it's the only one they've done that none of the band members wrote or co-wrote. It's a great song though, very well written and distinctively performed, about a woman trying to find a way out of an abusive relationship. It's got this poppy beat, strange for a song of its subject matter, but Christina Amphlett's vocals hit all the right notes emotionally and it, like other tracks before and after this album, debunks the notion among critics that DiVinyls only do one kind of lyrical material. "Pleasure And Pain" helps show their true versatility musically and lyrics-wise.

"Don't You Go Walking" treads the tried but true ground of 'lover don't leave' material found on so many rock albums, but with the added vocal quirks and impassioned bellowing Amphlett brings to the table and a great extended guitar outro. "Good Die Young" is on the much rarer (musically) ground of what I think of as Dark New Wave, with drummer Richard Harvey getting a good chance to shine, and another turn of the tragic/dark side of Chrissie's vocals which she used to such devastating effect on "Elsie" off the "Desperate" album.
"Sleeping Beauty" - now here's the kind of song the DiVinyls Are known for, and how they shine on this one! Deliciously suggestive vocals from Chrissie ranging from dreamily pure to teasingly playful to red-hot whispered husky. "Motion" is just plain bizarre, and wonderfully so, with Chrissie in full Wild Girl mode through most of her singing.

On "In My Life" though, the vocals manage to go from wild to downright scary. Christina is one of four singers I know who can really, on more than just an occasional basis, 'sing scary' when they want to (the others are Alice Cooper, King Diamond and Till Lindemann from Rammstein). This is a delight though, not dark. Roller coaster ride scary vocals. "Casual Encounter" is a misinterpreted song. People say it's mean and taunting; I get the opposite from it. It's about a girl looking for love (and sex, might as well call a spade a spade) but who's tired and cranky (Really cranky in this case) from potential suitors faking the first just to try to get the second. That's how I read it anyway. Musically, it's one of the most clearly Hard Rock tracks on the album and the least New Wave.

"Heart Telegraph" is really different musically again, with unique intro effects and a pulsing, electronic-sounding rhythm throughout and more subdued but still excellent vocals. "Guillotine Day"'s vocals are definately not subdued and highlighted by great keyboards.

The album ends with "Dear Diary", one of the most beautifully haunting tracks I've ever heard. Soft and powerful vocals, an outstanding example of the art of songwriting, incredible musicianship all around, the effect of the rain heard in the background fitting in perfectly, the slow drums seeming to bleed with unnameable emotions. A perfect way to close an eclectic album.

Only downsides: not enough pictures of Christina (alright, to be fair there'd have to be some of the rest of the band too, but it's the abscence of a booklet of Chrissie pictures I'm mourning); the 4 missing tracks from the original version of this still NEED to get out there ("Old Radios" has the single most adorably bizarre vocals I've ever heard) and it's been too many years since there was any new DiVinyls material. Maybe they've retired or gone onto non-performing ventures, but if you read this, PLEASE consider coming back for even just a couple of new songs to go on a collection of rarities. We miss you!

Okay, enough lamentations. Great, eclectic and unforgettable album. 10/10, at the very least.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! forgotten eighties treasure.......2003-12-03

God I miss the eighties! when are we going to have another creative explosion, from the looks of things that's not going to happen. I loved this band the first time I saw them on MTV, and I miss them. When is America going to wake up and smell the roses instead of wallowing headfirst in the dingleberries of current music. Stop pipe dreaming...Guitar driven and fun! classic alternative rock album, not really a bad song on it...give it a try at least for nostalgic interest and remember... they did it before Nirvana or Hole or any other imitator that's followed.

5 out of 5 stars Divinyls- The "original" alternative band.......2003-06-04

Before Nirvana, before Godsmack, before Alanis, before anybody considered alternative nowadays, there was Christina Amphlett and the Divinyls, period. This album was made in 1984, when many of todays "alternative" band members were still in diapers.
It is also one of the rare albums, you can play front to back without skipping any songs.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars desperate is better.......2007-06-20

This is an good start but you can do better. Their first disc "Desperate" is by far a five star disc, pure attitude that's what makes this a great disc but very hard to find.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Aussie Rock on Full Throttle.......2006-09-18

Now most of you folk outside Australia would remember this rock band for their smash hit "I Touch Myself" and possibly one of their finest songs from their last album, 1996's Underworld, that was used on Melrose Place, "I'm Jealous". You may want to go back a little further to the early 80's when Mark, Chrissy and their band broke onto the Aussie scene sharing venues with another emerging giant, INXS.

The Divinyls quickly established themselves as a unique rock/new wave act with Chrissy's sexy and quirky and distinctive vocals and presence as rocks wild woman. She went to see ACDC and saw Angus, and after that she donned the sexy school uniform with suspenders and that became as big a trademark as he wild vocals that are just as good as Suzi Quatro, Stevie Nicks, Blondie or Chrissy Hynde, but Amphlett never got as much attention and respect as she eventually found.

I will go through the songs for those of you not too familiar with some of the bands stuff.....

As the title of my review suggests, the rock of the first song "Boys in Town" comes at you full throttle. It is a classic rock song here in Australia perhaps about Chrissy's struggle with the rock scene, which was by and large a mans world.

Next is the song "Science Fiction", which underlines Chrissy's range in her voice. She sounds as sexy as Kylie Minogue here and the little inflections she gets with her vocals add to this new wave/catchy pop song.

"Siren" is a fast paced new wave song with some nice guitar work. Mark and Chrissy take turns with the lead vocal.

"Only Lonely" was another significant hit for the band. This signalled the emergance of melodies in their music and is a good mid tempo rocker.

This next song rocks. "Casual Encounter" is a song with some sexual connotations. It also had attitude and a few nice key changes. At this stage Chrissy's personality was stamped all over the bands songs. This song still sounds fresh.

"Good Die Young" isn't as good as the rest of the songs. The next song is more like it.

Chrissy absolutely shines on "In My Life" which rocks and has one of their most catchiest choruses and a hilariously spoken bridge by Amphlett. This sort of song would be a smash today if a band came out with it.

"Pleasure and Pain" was their biggest hit to date in 1985. It is classic Amphlett. It never looks backwards, is direct with question "please don't ask me, how I've been getting off?" You may remember the song with the chorus "It's a fine line between pleasure and pain, you've done it once you can do it again, what ever youve done dont try to explain, its a fine, fine, line between pleasure and pain"

By this stage you start to piece together who was the inspiration behind Kath's boganish voice "look at moy kimmy" from the TV series, Kath and Kim.

"Sleeping Beauty" was one of their rare ballads and is more commerical and pop than their previous rock and new wave sound. Here the band is more restrained, this was a good radio hit.

"Tempermental" rocks but not in the raw and desperate way as their earlier stuff, it sounds a little too produced for traditional Divinylites but it's not a bad song.

"Back To The Wall" was the best song from the 1988 Tempermental album. It's a rock ballad with some very melodic guitar from Mr McEntee and a soothing vocal from Chrissy.

Next is "Hey Little Boy" a cheeky song sung with a laugh and a sneer. It is the opposite of Hey Little Girl and is an infectious song with the "ooh ooh"

"Punxsie" is a ballad and its quite good. It is probably an obscure song but it was a minor hit over here.

"I Touch Myself" if you are reading this still, you know all about this song. It was a worldwide hit at a time where the band were at its International peak fame wise. The video was controversial filmed in a convent. It is a sexy song. Funnily enough some loyal fans though the band had sold out at the time but looking back it gained them alot more attention and we laugh when people call the Divinyls a one hit wonder, something they clearly weren't.

It is sad to think that their best stuff came after this when contractual and financial difficulties prevented this band hitting it even bigger with their album that BMG would only release in Australia.

"Love School" is a darker ballad with chiming guitar and is the direction musically in which this band would follow until disbanding in 1996.

"Make Out Alright" was a minor hit in the US and you may remember it. It is a good song, not as good as "I Touch Myself" but deserving of being a hit.

Now comes the good stuff.

The harrowing "I'm On Your Side" is a standout song. It is a ballad with Chrissy's amazing voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar, it is unadulted and straight from her heart.

Oh, the band did a song for "Buffy" it was the Rascals cover, "Ain't Gonna Eat My Heart Anymore". I love key change and Chrissy's vocals are fantastic. This song was a massive radio hit in Australia.

"I'm Jealous" is a heartwrenching song. "what she got that I don't" "I'm liable to do anything, I might kick her face in" Sings Chrissy is one of her best vocal peformances. The song pulls no punches, is hard hitting, and you have guessed it, Chrissy is jealous. This is their best song in my opinion. It starts somber but then bang! it rocks. The guitar work is great throughout with Mark picking an acoustic and a Rickenbaker getting that full ringing sound. Make no mistake, this song could have hit #1 in the US. But the legal and financial wrangle prevented it getting a proper American release at the time.

The last song, from the same album, Underworld, "Human on the Inside" was the 3rd or 4th hit here from the album. It is very catchy, and honest.

This is a great collection from The Divinyls, and alot of songs you may not have heard, but let me tell you, check it out, especially the last few songs from what I rate their best album, which sadly was their last as a band.

Recently the band were inducted in the Aussie Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This greatest hits package celebrates their contribution as one of our finest rock bands.

I bought this as an album back in 1983. Great album and their best by far. Elsie, Boys in Town, Take a Chance, are the highlights. Not a bad song on here. Very hard to find which is a shame. The rest of their discs are pretty good to.

I saw the Divinyls in 1983 at Macquaire University and they blew the hall apart.

I have not purchased a record by them until this one just recently.

The band still sounds fresh and interesting even after so many years.

The strong songs remain there early ones, Only Lonely particularly.

If this band was around today and had access to the didgital recording technology the record would be even more impressive.

Cannot recommend the album highly enough!

5 out of 5 stars The catchier and more rocking Divinyls stuff.......2004-01-22

How's this for an evenly distributed greatest hits album? Four singles each from their three albums. That's what you get with The Essential Divinyls, a collection of the Divinyls' 80's material, whose harder-edged punk/rock hybrid is oodles better than their insipid breakthrough single "I Touch Myself." The Divinyls, led by Christina Amphlett, she of the rough and raucous voice, were yet another group of talented Australians, but who did not make it in the US the same way Men At Work and AC-DC did.

"Pleasure And Pain", from their second album What A Life! is the first I heard of them, and the polished sound is courtesy of Blondie producer Mike Chapman, who also wrote this song with Holly Knight, with the provocative refrain "Please don't ask me how I've been getting off." Those powerful but kittenish/rough vocals going into how it's a fine line between pleasure and pain, and it's all the same" and collaborator Mark McIntee's guitar work introduced me to them.

The title track to their third album Temperamental is a more rocking affair, although as the liner notes say, "they were too accessible to be called heavy metal, too raw to be power pop." This and the rest of their album was produced by Mike Chapman and mixed by Bob Clearmountain. The second time I heard a Divinyls song was their engaging cover of "Hey Little Boy" originally "Hey Little Girl", also on Temperamental. Amphlett's vocals have a soft, impish undertone once moment, other times she yells out "I'm talking to you!"

The melodic and mid-paced "Back To The Wall" is another favourite here, highlighted by Amphlett's vocals and Mark McIntee's ringing guitars. The sense of desperation concealing a suppressed rage is evident here: "I've been running back all my tears just so the pressure don't show/like a timbomb ticking away/I might blow up somebody" and "don't push, don't shove/you'd better watch what you do." Also from Temperamental.

A more punkish sound comes in another catchy favourite, "Only Lonely" underscoring the sense of alienation and loneliness, "wondering could we get involved?" This was one of the songs here featured in the 1982 Australian movie Monkey Grip, directed by Ken Cameron, which not only had a supporting role for Amphlett, but yielded her a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Australian film awards. Dating attitudes come through in this song: "You say, come on baby. not on the first date. so I say OK baby, how long must I wait?" and "and if it doesn't feel right, when I put you down, oh baby it's all right. I am only lonely."

The title character in the slower-paced and moody "Punxsie" exhibits a sullen lonely attitude: "such a punxsie thing, you don't talk to strangers."

The rocker "Boys In Town" from Desperate has an intense trapped sound, highlighted by Amphlett's pleading "Get me out of here" refrain at the end, the backing band singing "too much too young", and a great guitar solo. This was the other song featured on the soundtrack EP for Monkey Grip.

The naive schoolgirl tone of "Science Fiction" from Desperate is a catchy mid-paced song, with the title referring to the line "I thought that love was science fiction." There's also a trace of Cold War thinking: "I never thought it would last this long/I thought they would drop the bomb."

The other Mike Chapman-produced song from What A Life! is the longing fantasy "Sleeping Beauty", a nice mid-paced guitar number.

Taken from Desperate, "I'll Make You Happy" is a cover of the fellow Aussies The Easybeats from the 1960's, and the insistent pounding drums and the McIntee/Amphlett combination give this a more punk sound, and is a great way to finish the album.

Although INXS, Icehouse, Midnight Oil, and Men at Work (just to name a few) proved to be the more successful of the australian 80's acts, Divinyls still remain one of the better ones. Although they didn't really make it big in the US until the early 90's, their early work remains their best. Songs like "Boys in Town" and "Pleasure and Pain" (both of which were small US hits) help make this compilation a must for any 80's fan.

4 out of 5 stars The forgotten Divinyls album.......2006-11-02

Released initially in Australia only by BMG. Here we find the Divinyls playing a less polished brand of music that found them success on their last outing, their self titled International Hit album.

The song "Im Jealous" had been around for a couple of years used in Melrose Place and is an emotionally charged ballad only Chrissy and Mark could pull off. A powerful song indeed. It hit #14 on the Australian singles chart.

Several darker acoustic ballads signal the difference between this album and its predecessor, both being a departure from the new wave, energetic rocking earlier albums, The Monkey Grip EP, Desperate, What A Life and Tempermental.

There are two instrumental links on this album which stretches it to 14 songs. Half of the songs are run off the mill Divinyls which does make the album a little uneven, but by no means dampens its strength and power.

Mark's guitar gives alot of edge to the songs as usual, especially on "Im Jealous". Chrissy's voice is both sexy, vulnerable and husky, alot mellower than her wailing banshee vocalisations of the mid 80's.

The stronger tracks include, "Human On The Inside" which is a catchy mid tempo rock song anchored by a great bassline and some great lyrics. "Come Down To Earth" is a moody and poignant acoustic piece and downright raunchy with "Sex Will Keep Us Together".

Unpolished mid tempo rock with some good guitar licks, a few darker acoustic ballads make for a good collection. If you are a new fan, make this a later purchase

5 out of 5 stars Import worth every penny by The Divinyls!.......2005-08-20

This cd is a hard to find import by the great Australian band The Divinyls, same band that brought us "Boys in town" and "Only lonely" in the early 80's. Christina sounds beter than ever in songs like: Heart of Steel, I'm Jealous and Save me. I also recommend Essential Divinyls, which includes all of their best songs...2 great CDS to own!

5 out of 5 stars Handle With Fire-Gloves.......2004-10-02

What can I say about this, or any other DiVinyls album, that'll possibly do it justice? They're probably my favorite recording group of all time, and like all their albums, "Underworld" is an absolute must-have.

Here in North America, DiVinyls seem to be known almost exclusively for their 1991 self-titled album and the "I Touch Myself" single, which is a shame, because as awesome as that song and that album are, they're only part of an outstanding repertoire of music. Knowing a band like this for one song only - no matter how good that song - is an appalling injustice, akin to recognizing a rainbow for one colour only.

On the CD itself, there are again zero weak tracks, the DiVinyls being one of the few bands to have never delivered even a single let-down. To point out a few of the many high points - "Hard On Me", the opening track, is the musical quintessence of 'erotic'. Not the somber, never-smile 'erotic' that seems to be the only variety professional critics on this continent find resectable, but the delightful, blazing, cuddly, 'squeal-and-hoot' version of erotic that's high in giggle factor and affection and mock-seriosness and real-seriousness and whimsey all at the same time. And a prime example of how nobody in the world double-plays on words quite like Christina Amphlett. Required material for newlyweds to take along on the honeymoon.

"I'm Jealous" originally appeared on the "Melrose Place" soundtrack a couple of years prior to "Underworld"'s release. I got it as soon as I could track it down despite having never seen the show, and it was easily worth the price of a full-length CD all by itself. Now available on a full DiVinyls album as it should be; the song is excellent, somewhat reminiscent of the haunting and moving "Dear Diary" from their "What A Life" album. Very sad, but DiVinyls has the ability to do songs that are sad but not depressing. And only Chrissie would put in a line like the one following "I'm liable to do anything..." on a serious song such as this. What a quirky girl...

"Come Down To Earth" is one of the DiVinyls's best acoustic songs, lyrically haunting and beautiful; perfect musicianship.

"Save Me" - ...oh my goodness, even without global warming, this one could melt the ice caps all by itself...

"For A Good Time" has some of the best instrumental work on a DiVinyls album, including a higher profile for bass than usual, and husky vocal lines that could make you forget to breathe.

"Heart Of Steel" is kind of different from all the others. Has an Almost mainstream feel, which for once isn't a bad thing because this song is wonderful. Could have been an absolutely HUGE radio hit if given a tenth of a chance (like so many other unheralded songs out there, while the radio plays the same five songs over and over and over again...)

And that's just some of the songs. Then there's the overall flow of the album - starting off happy and hot, touches of melancholy and even cynicism creep in (the latter uncharacteristic for a DiVinyls ablbum), the cynicism quickly giving way to more touches of melancholy and songs of loneliness (i.e. the first-rate "Open Windows"), still charged with brightness frequently though. The melancholy and cynicism later crumble before a tide of optimism and determination (title track 'Underworld' and "Sorry' for example), still occasionally punctuated by recurring wary songs ("Heart Of Steel") before ending the disc on a double-dose of brilliantly positive songs in "Save Me" and "Black Magic", and a spirit of victory. Sort of a concept album not of events but of emotions, if one chooses to look at it that way. Of course, the songs still are perfect as Stand-Alone pieces. If all this isn't enough, Christina's liner note pics are worth way more than the price of the CD to me!

    Superb.

3 out of 5 stars An Uneven "Underworld".....But Still Entertaining.......2000-11-30

I can see why Virgin (and any other label Divinyls may have taken this
CD to)chose not to release "Underworld" here in the
States:Coming off their most successful release ever, 1991's polished,
hugely popular "Divinyls", "Underworld", on first
listen, has a rough, uneven sound to it. Most record execs were
probably scratching their heads, wondering why a band that had finally
made it was messing with a hit formula. However, if you give
"Underworld" a chance - and three or four listens! - a
number of it's charms will rise to the surface. But before we get to
those charms let's discuss what I don't like about
"Underworld." First, and foremost, there's the
production....there's a raw, unfinished, demo quality to it, almost
like the band was trying to recapture their punk roots. Unfortunately,
rather than assimilating that sound into who they are now, yet showing
they hadn't lost touch of their grittier shadings after the glossier
"Divinyls", they just sort of come across as,
well,....poseurs. A lot of the blame can be placed on co-producer
Charley Drayton. While Drayton is a phenomenal drummer - he was
absolutely captivating during the shows to promote
    "Divinyls" - he's no producer. There's a been-there,
done-that quality to his work, a tentative sameness that has you
thinking "Yeah, that's cool.....but what if they had done
THIS"? You also get the feeling that, along with trying to
recapture their punk roots, Drayton wasn't a strong enough producer to
stand up to Christina Amphlett and Mark McEntee, unable to say
"This is the way it should be." Then there's the problem of
weak songs. "I'm Jealous" was the single throughout the
world. While it met with varying degrees of success in a number of
countries, I could see record execs in the U.S. frowning and thinking
    "Huh"? There's a schizo, all-over-the-place, power pop
ballad quality to it that left me cold. Also less than thrilling is
the sense that a lot of these songs aren't.....done. They seem like
demos that could have used a few more month's tinkering. A prime
example is "Human On the Inside", a nice enough song but one
that pales when compared to the cover version the Pretenders did two
years ago, the retitled "Human" off their "!Viva El
Amor!" CD. Chrissie Hynde and the boys brought a fullness, a
warmth, a yearning to their version that's just missing from the
Divinyl's. I could have also done without the two instrumental tracks
on the album, "Underworld" and "Spook";they're
cloying and a waste of time and space. That said, what DO I like
about "Underworld"? Well, there are a number of GREAT songs,
starting with the opening track "Hard On Me", which is a
pure piece of rock candy. Given half a chance this song could have
been a huge hit single. I also love "Sex Will Keep Us
Together", a Stones-like burner that is sort of a follow-up to
"I Touch Myself" minus the coyness and cuteness. Hot and
nasty, there's no doubt what this song is about. Another sexy, solid
rocker is "For A Good Time", with it's great guitar and
drums mix and sultry vocals. Rounding out my Top 5 faves are
... "Save Me", a track you just know would be great live,
and the lovely, haunting "Heart Of Steel", which features
one of Christina Amphlett's best vocals ever. Amphlett's vocals, in
fact, are strong throughout the CD. It's a shame that it's been almost
a decade since they've been heard here in the States; hopefully
someone (at a U.S. label) will soon realize that their uniqueness is
greatly missed. That said, pick up "Underworld"....it's not
a great album but it's certainly a good, albeit uneven, one.

5 out of 5 stars Has Just 3 Songs But More Worth Than Most 75-Minute Discs.......2007-05-09

Until recently, I didn't even know this gem had ever been pressed onto CD. I got the 12" EP record quite a while back, and I think I actually mentioned in a previous DiVinyls review how essential it was for someone to get this out on CD. Thankfully, it seems just such a disc has now been unearthed. It seems that this one sometimes gets confused with the 9-track release "DiVinyls Live Authorised Bootleg" from the mid-90s, which has been referred to by a host of names; both releases are sometimes just abbreviated as "DiVinyls Live". If you're going to order this from an Amazon affiliate seller, you might want to check in with the seller just to make sure it is indeed the 80s EP so you don't duplicate discs (not that "Live Authorised Bootleg" isn't also worth having).

An essential to get on either disc or vinyl, "Live At The Ritz" contains just 3 songs but is better than most 2-CD live albums. Captured with crystal clear sound, the band is captured at their best here. All 3 come off as good if not better than their studio counterparts off the "What A Life" album, with Christina Amphlett working her vocal quirks and unusual energy to extraordinary effect, and dynamic, invigorating music from the band. One thing "Live Authorized Bootleg" missed (aside from a clear production) was the between-songs mic work where Chrissie talks to the audience. All the best live vocalists have to have that special factor they can turn on between the songs, to make the performance the experience it should be and not just a recitation of music with no connection. Amphlett's one of the best at this kind of thing. 'Pleasure And Pain' is a more energetic take on the song than the original version, 'In My Life' is one of Chrissie's most over-the-top vocal performances ever and features Mark McEntee turning in some of his most sonically powerful guitar work, and 'Sleeping Beauty' is an even more scorchingnly sexy track than it was before, with heart-stopping husky/raspy vocals by Amphlett in parts. Just overall a tremendous little mini set of great songs. Now if only somebody could issue the whole Ritz concert on CD or DVD....

The Divinyls created a string of minor hits before they finally made it big with "I touch myself". Amphlett and McEntee had spent a decade as the Divinyls by then, and this compilation shows they had a distinctive style right from the beginning.

Make You Happy is quite a good representation of the Divinyls career, however this CD does seem to peter out, with a definite change of direction in the nineties. Perhaps songs such as "Im jealous", "Only human on the inside" and "lay your body down" would have amounted to a more satisfying ending to this cd.

The Divinyls have more to offer on their albums Monkey Grip( the film soundtrack), Desperate (the original version as released in Australia in 1982) and Temperamental. Don't be fooled by the mediocre live version of "Only Lonely".

      It's good anyway.

      4 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2000-07-13

This is a great overview of the Divinyls' work. It also shows how much stronger n fierce their earlier material could be. The last part of the disc is filled with unoriginal and tame covers. Their only redeeming quality is Christina Amphlett's unique voice which combines Bon Scott's growl with Lene Lovich's yelps. Highlights: everything from Desperate, Pleasure and Pain, everything from Temperamental, 9:50. They should've chose Gonna Get You from Monkey Grip and If Love Was a Gun from diVinyls.

WoW! Christina is a real knockout, and, boy, can she sing! Even though the sound is coming out of your stereo, you get the feeling you're in a live gig in a club somewhere! This cd always makes me feel good, and sexy, no less. I recommend it to all of you who wish to experience real rock made by a ripe female performer.
