The Cowboy Junkies' gothic Americana takes a psychedelic hue on At the End of Paths Taken, replete with Beatlesque string sections and snarling, distorted guitar leads. It's an often epic album, exemplified by the opening track, "Brand New World," which starts off like a lament and ends with a triumph of surging strings. Atop it all sits singer Margo Timmins. She's the lover everyone wants, a voice that is at once world-weary and inviting, domineering and seductive. She's the perfect vehicle for writer and brother Michael Timmins--especially on an album that deals with adult themes--because if nothing else, Margo sounds like an adult, a woman who has experienced the world and life and things that maybe we shouldn't talk about. A mother's frustration never sounded as ominous and threatening as on "Cutting Board Blues." Sitting astride a buzzsaw guitar riff and a groove of doom, she talks about walking away from it all, leaving her cutting board behind. Many of the themes concern adulthood and children with a sense of despair about the world those children are entering on songs like "My Little Basquiat." There are moments of light and hope on At the End of Paths Taken, but overall it is a deliriously dark and brooding album. --John Diliberto
Album Description
Despite its title, the new Cowboy Junkies album, At the End of Paths Taken, is as much about new beginnings as it is about endings. It is also about human connections, the struggle to sustain those connections over time, and the complexities that can arise even when those connections are maintained. It is, in other words, a classic Cowboy Junkies album - a suite of smart, richly textured songs that value subtlety over broad, generic strokes, songs that prize insight and casual revelations over easily digestible clichés. Family lies at the heart of the album's eleven songs, and, of course, that is appropriate, too. Three of the band's members - singer Margo Timmins; songwriter, producer and guitarist Michael Timmins; and drummer Peter Timmins - are siblings, and bassist Alan Anton has been a member since the group formed in Toronto in 1985. Few bands have lasted nearly as long with their original line-up intact, and fewer still have created as consistently satisfying a body of work.

The Junkies Just Improve With Age.......2007-06-21
How anyone could rate this less than five stars is completely beyond me. I have followed the Junkies since their second album, and really got into them with an assigned review of 'Lay It Down', which I still consider a masterpiece. But this recording is something else entirely. I've lived with it now for quite awhile (I think I had it about a month before official release, so add that time to the date of this 'review'), and I'm still awed by its strength in all directions. The writing is superb, Michael's guitar work gets better and better as time goes on, Margo's voice sounds more tuned and better than it did twenty something years ago with 'Whites Off Earth Now', and the arrangements (including strings) are simply amazing. Try listening to 'Brand New World' (the first track), and see if you don't feel optomistic about the world today. By the time the closing track, 'My Only Guarantee' finishes, it's clear that you've reached the end of THIS path taken, but I can't wait to hear where they will go next. I stand up and applaud this grand achievement of the Junkies, quite possibly the finest recording of their long career and one I will treasure for years to come. Now if they would only issue it on vinyl too...
Fantastic.......2007-05-02
I've just listened to this once, so there's probably so much more that I didn't catch yet. But what a fantastic, gorgeous, and enthralling album. This is the Junks 11th studio release - and it's the same band from when they began more than 20 years ago. But this is not the same sound sonically. Michael's guitar playing and approach continues to mature and grow (listen to Cutting Board Blues). Margo's voice has never sounded better, IMO - it's like a fine wine aging to perfection. Peter is here, along with long-time guests Jaro Czerwinec and Jeff Bird. Alan's trademark bass is very under-stated on most of the tracks, though. But the big difference is the presence of strings on nearly all of the songs. It's a great fit with Margo's voice and the tone of the album, which is very oriented towards family. There's a children's choir on the ending song, along with a recording of Father Timmins (which makes up the under-lying element of Mountain).
Highlights of the album are Cutting Board Blues, My Little Basquiat, Follower 2, and It Doesn't Really Matter. The album reminds me of Open in some ways - a big departure in sound from their previous albums. I'd rank it up there with One Soul Now, which is my favourite album of theirs in the last decade (Caution Horses remains my personal favourite).
Buy the album - and don't forget to see the band live if they're coming to your neck of the woods (unfortunately no Texas dates yet - drat).
What a great CD..........2007-04-21
I am a longtime Cowboy Junkies fan. Their sound has taken various twists and turns over their various releases, but overall they still find a way to keep their "signature" sound within each release. "At The End of Paths Taken" is yet another example. They still sound like the Junkies, but again, they have found a way to incorporate something different and new in this release. I love it. The mellowness, the moodiness, the creativity, the complexity. I think it's one of their best. There's something that just grabs you in from the first song, and makes you want to keep listening until the last. It's easy to get lost in this CD. Thanks for more great music, CJ's!
Same Talent, Different Direction.......2007-04-21
This album is very different from the work the Cowboy Junkies did in the nineties and late eighties (I haven't listened to the 2004 One Soul Now, so I'm not sure how it compares). Their characteristic harmonica has taken a vacation, and drums have a much larger role along with several additional instruments (many that I can't even correctly identify). Further, the music is more complex, layered and psychedelic than in their 80's and 90's albums. Finally, their themes have changed, and instead of being about heartbreak, violence and despair and they are now about "family" (using Margo's term).
I have noticed these same changes in other artists' music as they have matured. In most cases, I have found these developments disappointing (Sting, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel) as it seems like the angst and edge that originally drove these artists' creativity later gave way too something over-worked, something more science than art, something more benignly pleasant than engaging. In this case, however, I am not disappointed for the most part. Margo's hauntingly beautiful voice is still entrancing (although its changed a little too). The family themes are real rather than overly sentimental. The Cowboys still have some edge, as shown in Cutting Board Blues. And there's still some of that forlorn feeling of their earlier work in Spiral Down. It Doesn't Really Matter Anyway has a little of each and is a great song. Someday Soon didn't work for me at all, but maybe its just a matter of taste. Also, even though Mountain could be a great song, I don't like the rambling male voice in the background, its too distracting. And I wasn't hip on the kids' voices in My Only Guarantee, even though it would also be an otherwise great song. (Maybe these two songs waded into the "over worked" category just a bit).
Ultimately, while there are selected albums out there that I like better than any of the Cowboy Junkies albums that I have, I think the Cowboy Junkies could easily be characterized as consistently being the best band of the last three decades. They deserve more recognition than they have received in the U.S, but perhaps a lack of commercial success in the U.S. is part of what has kept them so great over the years. Also, Cowboy Junkies, if you read this - thank you for coming to Idaho to play. I never thought I'd get a chance to see you live and it was wonderful.

On their sophomore effort, Canada's Cowboy Junkies manage to make a one-day recording session in an old church one of their most satisfying listens. Featuring the sultry voice of Margo Timmins, the precise musicianship of her brothers Peter (on drums) and Michael (on guitar), and bassist Alan Anton, The Trinity Sessions is a spare, evocative, countrified-rock classic. Their inspired reworking of both "Blue Moon" and "Working On A Building" reveal the Timmins family to be talented interpreters and insightful neo-traditionalists. Mixing the ambitious songwriting of Margo and Michael Timmins with subdued covers of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" and Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," The Trinity Sessions is an exquisite collection that holds up quite well under repeated listenings. --Mitch Myers

Late nights and cold days.......2007-06-18
I got this as a hand-me-down cassette and it got me through so many late nights and cold, dark days when I was in college that I couldn't _not_ replace it when it finally gave out. I especially missed "Misguided Angel" and "200 More Miles". It's not dynamic, though, so if you're looking for something with a more obvious rock sound, this isn't it, but it's a great album.
the earliest is still the best.......2007-05-14
I got a new copy of this to put it on my ipod. My favorite line is "soul like a lucifer..soul like a piece of wood."
great tone poem for late night.......2007-05-09
I read reviews before buying this (which I typically do not do before writing a comment) and mostly I agree...however I would give this a 4.5 for the following: The Cowboy's version of Waylon's "dreaming my dreams' so diminishes the melody its a missed opportunity--and the bass line is just plain out of synch with what this song requires....and on Hank Williams "I'm so lonesome I could cry" nobody changes Hank's lyrics...especially "lonesome SKY to Haze" which doesnt make the next stanza rhyme...there are two times when the harmonica comes in and its mixed way too loud --its jolting...I have to say that their take on Sweet Jane kinda makes up for those lapses....
a unique work.......2006-08-31
This is the most intimate cd I have ever heard. The band actually went into a church and recorded the album live. What you hear is what they did, no studio modifications.
The sound is very slight and organic. No matter how much you turn up the volume, you cannot make the music loud. The drums are played with a brush, the guitars are turned way down and any electronic amplification is kept to a minimal.
B/c of the set up, the vocalist's voice is mixed way up front and is the feature of the cd. Boy, can she sing and her voice is beautiful and expressive.
That being said, not every song is fantastic and it is not an exceptional cd. The grandeur of the work is in the atmosphere not in the strength of songs. The silent, intimate nature of the cd does make some of the songs sounds a bit similar to each other.
The best songs are "Blue Moon", "Sweet Jane" (they do the version from Velvet Underground live 1969, the mellow version) and "Misguided Angel"
This is a unique work that is exactly what the title says it is. The "Trinity Sessions" a bunch of songs recorded inside of a church.
The Trinity Session is great!.......2006-02-24
I really enjoy listening to the Cowboy Junkies...if you like them, you'll like this CD too.

In 1996 the Cowboy Junkies could have gone one of two ways: they could have veered away from their familiar melancholic, somber sound or dug deeper into the groove. They chose the latter. Margo Timmins's distinctively sleepy, seductive vocals never sounded better--here she perfects the art of the subtle attack, best exemplified by the radio hit "A Common Disaster." The band knows when to pull back (it lays a spare, delicate foundation for her wispy words on tracks like "Something More Besides You" and the achingly beautiful "Now I Know") and when to let a groove build ("Speaking Confidentially," "Lay It Down," "Come Calling"). "Angel Mine" wears the band's love for country music plainly on its sleeve, and the stunning "Bea's Song" shimmers. A definite highlight in the band's career. --Lorry Fleming

3 1/2, going on 4.......2007-06-25
I like _Lay It Down_ but have never found it as interesting or listenable as _Black-Eyed Man_ or as haunting as _the Trinity Session_. It's still a good album, though.
Not Their Best But A Good One.......2006-12-21
This is an album that fans of the band tend to rate very highly. For me, although I think it is very good, I rank it slightly below some of their previous releases. The album continues the patented Cowboy Junkies sound with lush music, cerebral lyrics and gorgeous vocals. The band rocks out a bit harder in places than on previous album (although the junkies never really heavy), and for the most part it works. The single "A Common Disaster" even received some radio airplay. Highlights include the album opener "Something More Besides You" with the great opening line "One foot stands before the crib, the other by the casket...". The title track "Lay It Down" is a good one as is "Bea's Song (River Trilogy Part II) which is an ongoing trilogy divided between 3 albums. Another interesting one is two versions of the same song sung from different perspectives. "Come Calling (his song), and "Come Calling" (her song) is a clever idea. In conclusion this is probably the least favorite of the Cowboy Junkies albums that I own, but there is no such thing as a bad Cowboy Junkies album and this one is very strong as well.
Lay It Down.......2005-08-12
I first heard this CD at work when a new employee brought it from home. I had never heard of Cowboy Junkies before. He played it, and I was immediately hooked! Margo's haunting, spellbinding voice on the songs is nothing short of mystical, and you really cannot help but love it. So far, this is my favorite album by them. A must for any lover of Cowboy Junkies... or even just good music!
As heavy as they ever got...........2004-05-27
No one would ever accuse the Cowboy Junkies of being a rock and roll band, but their first album for Geffen Records found them turning the volume up a degree or two. "Lay It Down" is the most electric of the CJ's many records, yet the truly amazing thing is that the band loses absolutely nothing of their original charms. While the music may be a little denser and a touch louder, Margo Timmins never lets the sonics intimidate her subtle manner of singing.
Nowhere is this more evident than "Lay It Down's" best known song, "Common Disaster." Moving at a near pop song clip, the blues bassline and somewhat distorted guitar offer a tasty hook over which Margo sings brother Michael's tale of revenge planning ("I cut the list to one and you're name's on top"). It's one of the strongest songs of the CJ's career. Through the course of the Junkies' albums, one of the most consistent factors has been Michael's writing and "Lay It Down" is no exception. The his and hers versions of "Come Calling" show his love of country irony, and "Bea's Song" is a gorgeous entry that should find its way into someone else's record someday. He is, without question, one of the most underrated songwriters of the past two decades. With "Lay it Down," the second best album from the Cowboy Junkies treasure chest of recordings, he and his band continue to prove why their cult remains as strong as ever.
Shattering.......2003-11-30
This is the first CJ album that I purchased. A friend of mine was playing it in her car and I had to do a double take when I heard it. Now, I own every CD that the CJs have done. Honestly...this is the best of all of the CJs albums. Alot of people think that Trinity Sessions is their best. I would strongly disagree. Lay it Down and Pale Sun, Crescent Moon are their two best musically, lyrically and vocally. If you are gonna start, start with Lay it Down and then move to PSCM. This album is one of my top ten CDs in my entire collection (and I have HUGE collection). It is stark and haunting and hits you hard in the gut. Despite criticisms to the contrary Margo's voice is powerful and subtle at the same time. I've seen her live and she can belt it out when she wants. Her restraint is part of the overall CJ ambience.
Frankly, I don't think there is a single band out there in the last 10 years who can even touch the CJs when it comes to lyrics. Maybe October Project got close--but the depth and beauty of the lyrics on this album are amazing.
This is a "must own" album from one of the most underrated bands of the last 20 years.

For 20 years the Cowboy Junkies have created bluesy hypnotic spells while eschewing the expected forms of the genre. Taking their cues from the pre-Chicago, pre-electric blues of the Mississippi Delta, they've drawn from the resonance of solitary, acoustic performers in spreading the sound over an ensemble while not cluttering the sound in the least. This set's title includes a word they've used before: "home" (Miles from Home, 1998). It embodies a sensibility that is reflected in the band's success at maintaining a stance consistent with how they've presented themselves over the course of their career. Michael Timmins's songs have always been perfectly suited to the voice of his sister Margo. At their most spare, as on "Misguided Angel," his guitar and her singing manage to imply vast expanses and layered intricacies. Recorded at the end of their 2004 tour, this CD and DVD release is a testament to a band who can play songs from the earliest years of their catalog and never be on automatic pilot. A rare and wonderful thing indeed: the Cowboy Junkies have found out how to not get lost in their own legacy. --David Greenberger

Customer Reviews:
Nice Live Junkies.......2007-01-12
Previously released as a DVD only, it is nice to have a CD to go along with the DVD. It is well worth the price of admission in particularly for a somewhat more aggressive "Sweet Jane" highlighting Mike Timmins stellar guitar work, as well as an extended "32-20 Blues". Other standouts are "Pale Sun" and "He Will Call You Baby". The concert footage is excellent due to great performances of both old and newer selections. The DVD has 7 additional songs. My only gripe is that this combo CD and DVD should have been the only release. Having two releases is kind of a rip off of the longtime fans of this great Canadian group. Hence only 4 stars rather than 5.
Outstanding Concert Footage.......2007-01-10
I have been a Junkies fan since the mid 80's. I love all of their stuff. I have every album and each one is as good as the other, however, this one blew me away. Both the DVD and the CD are great. I enjoyed especially the version of "Sweet Jane" and "Good Friday". They also have a great live cover of "Helpless". I highly recommend this to any Cowboy Junkies fan.
Does anyone out there know how to film a concert?.......2006-12-24
The cd is great and the dvd could have been great had it been filmed correctly. Who's bright idea was it to light Margo's face from above using a cold blue light that made her look like a wrinkled corps? And why can't anyone film a concert where a camera shot lasts more than five seconds. The editing keeps jumping from one shot to another every 3 seconds. Cowboy Junkie songs are rich and sumptuous. The constant change in camera shot detracts from the experience. A great band like this deserves better. Their fans deserve better. Hope we get a better dvd next time. That's a lot of betters.
An outstanding CD/DVD combo showcases the Junkies live.......2006-12-10
CD: 4 stars; DVD: 4.5 stars
The Cowboy Junkies celebrate their 20 years existence as a band with the release of another live album, less than 2 years following the live "Open Road" album. This particular album was taped at a show in Liverpool, England, in October, 2004 during the "One Soul Now" tour.
The DVD (18 tracks, plus 3 interviews; 180 min.) brings the 2 hour show in its entirety and is as top notch as I can ever remember the Cowboy Junkies. Starting of with a 10 min. cover of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane", a song that the CJ have made their own over the years, the 2 hours flow by like a dream. Michael Timmins' guitar work shines throughout, and Margo Timmins' singing has gotten stronger and more confident in the last 10 years. Other great tracks include the 14 min. epic "32-20 Blues" (the Robert Johnson tune), with mesmerizing solos throughout, "The Slide", a beautiful cover of Neil Young's "Helpless", and the closer "Misguided Angel", with just Michael and Margo by themselves. Of the extras, only the half hour interview with Michael and Margo is really worth watching. Let's give a big thumbs up, though, to the band for maximizing the content capacity of this DVD (3 hours long!).
The CD (11 tracks, 70 min.) is a more curious affair. For whatever reason, not only was a selection made from the songs brought that night, but strangely the running order was completely mixed up. So the CD starts midway in the concert, with the afore-mentioned "32-20", and the evening's opener ("Sweet Jane") is now the closer! Once you've seen the DVD, you expect the CD to run like the actual show, but it doesn't. That said, the Cowboy Junkies really are at their peak on this set.
In all, this CD/DVD combo is a wonderful gift for Cowboy Junkies fans all over, and available at a very fan-friendly price here on Amazon. Highly recommended! If you like Cowboy Junkies, check out Over the Rhine, which is similiar in style (OtR just issued a new all-original Christmas album called "Snow Angels").
For Junkies Of The Junkies.......2006-10-30
Similar to and different from the Cowboy Junkies 2004 release of "Open Road" which documented the band's song book auditorialty and visually during their 2000-2001 tours, "Long Journey Home" continues the CD/DVD combo treatment that will please dedicated fans more than the casual listener.
The Junkies 2004 tour wrapped up in the musically historic city of Liverpool, a specific nod to why the band chose to record on this date. The DVD concert program is professionally shot with multi cameras that provide intimate views of each member on thier instruments. The band performs a solid setlist which spans most of their albums (some of which get smart re-working) and a few then-current covers. However, the winning factor is that the Junkies were in top notch attention with eachother and planned to visually capture this concert on thier terms (as opposed to the made-for-television performances on "Open Road") that results in a genuinely focused Cowboy Junkies concert. Fortunately, the extras are not all waste. If one can get anything from the in-depth interviews - it reinforces that each band member is still excited and energized about continuing to make music in the future - "even when their 65 and playing the Holiday Inn circuit" as the band's production manager states.
The CD program contains tracks culled from that same performance in Liverpool, only the concert is edited and the setlist is re-arranged. To me, an opportunity was missed to capture the true nature of the Junkies entire 2004 tour onto CD (much like the live "Waltz Across America" release). Because the Junkies record each of their concert dates, "Long Journey Home" should have been a collection of songs from that tour's cities as opposed to a briefed re-hash of what is already hear on the DVD. For that reason alone, the 5 star rating has been dropped to a 4.
While the entire performance is strong, my personal highlights are mainly their new material from "One Soul Now" and thier interpretive choice of cover songs:
Robert Johnson's "32-20 Blues" (a 14+ minute hypnotic jam interwoven with multiple free-form solos while anchored by a liquidy simple-groove bassline).
George Harrisons "Isn't It A Pity" (which appeared live b/f the band's 2005 "21st Century Blues" album).
Neil Young's "Helpless" (captured live after being placed on the Junkies "Neath Your Covers" ep which sistered their "One Soul Now" album).

Gives country a good name.......2007-06-21
Firstly, I recommend this album, whether you like country music or if you're a maturing "rocker" looking to expand your repetoire. For years, when people ask me what kind of music I like, my typical response was "anything but country" (yes, even electronic and hiphop). I never knew if the Cowboy Junkies counted as country, but I really like them and figured that they were as close to country music -- the Dwight Yokam, Toby Keith, Dixie Chicks brand of country -- as I could get. I was turned on to the Junkies a bit retroactively through their "Sweet Jane" cover on the _Natural Born Killers_ soundtrack. Unfortunately, the only song on Caution Horses that compares to that cover is "'cause Cheap is How I Feel," an absolutely wonderful song. There are other good ones, but I agree with another reviewer that the album, especially the second half, trails off in terms of quality and "listenability" as it progresses. Overall, the instrumentation -- slow reverb on guitars, harmonicas, mandolins, acordians, and Margo's sultry voice -- is outstanding; but beware, this entire album is SLOW and, might I add, not particularly ideal for roadtrips, unless you're trying to get a baby to sleep or you're driving through someplace like Tokyo at night and feel like being ironic. For me, after about 4-5 songs, I had to pick up the pace with another album.
very wide,very deep,very worthwhile.......2005-11-26
Introspective, deep, sensitive lyrics and exellent musicianship in a very quiet, seductive package.Margo Timmins' vocals are perfectly recorded and executed. The
songwriting is first rate. This is NOT a "party" album. This is
an experience created with depth and precision for individuals with depth and a love of subtle beauty. This is not like the much heavier, much more electric sound of the CJ's later efforts---this is much closer to the country blues that their sound is rooted in.If you iz looking for
rock n' roll, look elsewhere. This is quiet, quality country blues in it's top form. Completely worthwhile, especially at
the bargin price it is selling for at the time of this writing. (11-26-05)
Margo's favorite?.......2004-04-02
I'm listening to this CD as I write this, and I really like it. As much as Trinity Sessions? Nope, but it is still a great album.
A while ago I heard CJ live in concert. They took questions from the audience, and after a great deal of hemming and hawing, Margo Timmins allowed that this is probably, perhaps, maybe her favorite of their albums. Now, that might just be what popped into her head for that ten minutes, but I thought you might be interested to know anyway.
This album is a flop.......2003-12-08
I had heard that the Caution Horses was a terrible album, but I love the Cowboy Junkies so I thought that there were bound to be some redeeming qualities. There weren't. This album sounds like the band wasn't really interested in making a quality piece of art, but rather wanted to recapture the succcess of the Trinity Sessions without putting in the effort or the love of music which that album so abundantly had. This album was an anomoly, it is a horrible album from a band that has consistently maintained the highest standards of song writing and performance. Any other Cowboy Junkies album will be well worth the price you pay for it, this one isn't worth a nickel.
A wonderful recording from a great band.......2002-07-10
On Caution Horses, the Cowboy Junkies third album, we find the band venturing into country territory. And they do it well. Margo's voice is as sultry and beautiful as ever. The songs are woven together like a collection of sad, short tales.
There is not a weak or bad song on this album. Highlights of the album for me are "Cause Cheep Is How I Feel," "Rock and Bird," "Witches," and "Where Are You Tonight." Their cover of Neil Young's "Powderfinger" is probably the only cover of a Neil Young tune that I can honestly say sounds better than the original.
This is one of those desert island albums that you gotta have.

Black Eyed Man, an album that sounds like an aural facsimile of the parched earth in dead-heat summer, keeps the Cowboy Junkies' quiet, lonesome pop integrity intact. Michael Timmins's guitar threatens to cut loose from the band's low-key mooring, and "Oregon Hill" presents a touch of Southern blues. But it's all tempered by Margo Timmins's dusted-with-longing voice. The band is her pack and follows her voice, almost slowing to the vocal pacing. That facet marks the Junkies as a responsive, listenerly unit, touched by a unique rural-country-music bug, one that steers toward clear, patient guitar picking and a lot more to keep things moving with all deliberate quietude. Then there are the tributes that pair the Canadian quartet with Townes Van Zandt, which proves to be a fruitful musical handshake that takes the Junkies up a few notches in their speed (on Van Zandt's "To Live Is to Fly"). --Andrew Bartlett

On par with Trinity Session.......2007-06-25
(What the heck does the tag "appropriate" mean, anyway? As in, "no F-word in the lyrics"?)
_Black-Eyed Man_ is more conventional and polished, and has more of a Townes Van Zandt/Lyle Lovett feel overall, than _the Trinity Session_ but the songwriting is as good. Even though the songs, overall, are classic Cowboy Junkies mournful, there is still some range in the themes and moods of the individual tracks.
Great Album.......2006-12-21
The Cowboy Junkies burst on to the music scene with their album "The Trinity Sessions" which contained the hit single cover version of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" done very differently from the original. To my knowledge that was the band's only radio hit, but they developed a loyal following that has remained to this day. The band's music is mostly mellow with bits of folk, rock, blues, torch song, and country that combine to make a sound like no one else. Margo Timmons sultry vocals are at the center point of the band's work. Timmons is backed up ably by her brothers Michael on guitar and Peter on bass. Alan Anton rounds out the quartet on drums. The majority of the band's material is written by Michael. "Black Eyed Man" is an excellent album telling stories of its characters in a mostly slow drawn out manner. I once heard a reviewer describe the Junkies as "lonely" music, and I think the tag fits quite well. Every song here is good. "Southern Rain", "Oregon Hill", "Murder Tonight In The Trailer Park", "Black Eyed Man", "Winters Song", "The Last Spike" are all solid. "If You Were The Woman And I Were The Man" is a duet with John Prine. The last three songs on the disc are all related to Townes Van Zant. The band covers two of his songs "Cowboy Junkies Lament" and "To Live Is To Fly". The middle song of the three is a tribute to Townes called "Townes Blues" written Timmons. "Black Eyed Man" is a great album and a must have for any Cowboy Junkies fans.
The Best Cowboy Junkies Album? - Regardless, This Is An All-Time Personal Favorite.......2006-05-22
A really special record. Not all CJ albums have clicked with me, but this one makes a major connection. THE TRINITY SESSIONS often gets the credit for being their best, but as beautiful as that one is, it's also really slow, stark, and depressing. I really have to be in the mood for it. But I delight in hearing BLACK EYED MAN nearly any ol' time. All the tracks were written by guitarist Michael Timmins (brother of drummer Peter Timmins and ethereal-voiced sister Margo Timmins - bassist Alan Anton rounds out the quartet) save for two tracks written by the late, great Townes Van Zandt. These are gorgeous slice-of-life songs, rich and melodious with lots of colorful instrumentation from some great guest musicians. Several of these tracks are actually pretty upbeat and rockin' (at least as far as the Junkies' standards are concerned) but the band is truly at the top of its game on the sad songs. All around, the musicianship here is top-notch, first rate, absolutely impeccable.
My personal impressions of BLACK EYED MAN:
"Southern Rain" - a laid-back, easy going country-ish rocker and a rather melancholy tale of a woman's grateful return home to Georgia after leaving life on the West coast with an unfaithful lawyer. *****
"Oregon Hill" - this one has a great country/blues shuffle with intriguing elements mixed in including New Orleans jazz horns. Great lyrics on this one, on each of these songs in fact. *****
"This Street, That Man, This Life" - Margo's arresting voice is at once ghostly and sexy. So incredibly seductive. She shines on every tune, including this low key track about a place with a dark past. *****
"A Horse in the Country" - another sad tune about a woman who's become disillusioned with her man, but she finds solace in getting to visit her horse every few weeks; the song is ultimately uplifting. *****
"If You Were the Woman and I was the Man" - a great, vaguely kinky duet with John Prine. One guest artist that really shines on this album is pianist Spencer Evans, but on this particular track he contributes a delightfully woozy clarinet. *****
"Murder, Tonight, in the Trailer Park" - one of those laid back tunes of theirs that manages to be totally rockin' in its own way, thanks especially to Ken Myhr who guests on lead guitar, adding its soulful yet subtle bite to quite a few of these songs in fact. *****
"Black Eyed Man" - a very good song even though it's my personal least favorite here (just a question of taste, really). This is essentially a loping, bluesy country tune and, apparently, a rather sinister story about a man who gets set up by a vindictive woman. ****
"Winter's Song" - a gorgeous song with wonderful, expert accompaniment on harmonica, mandolin, accordion (not normally my favorite instrument, but I love it on BLACK EYED MAN), cello and fiddle. The only problem I have with this song is that it seems unfinished, both lyrically and musically. Right when the song starts to take off into a dramatic direction, it abruptly ends. ****1/2
"The Last Spike" - Stunning. Heartbreaking. Powerful. Soft. Naked. One of their very best. *****+
"Cowboy Junkies Lament" - written by Townes Van Zandt, this is another one of their best songs. Has such an infectious shuffling rhythm and a fantastic vocal melody. *****+
"Townes' Blues" - a great country rocker full of humor and sass. Cool guitar licks from Ken Myhr. This is an amusing tale of a train ride from the point of view of a dedicated craps player. *****+
"To Live is to Fly" - Van Zandt wrote the insightful, wise and glorious final track. It begins quietly and sweetly, building in intensity from there up to swirling heights and back again. Closes the album on a real high, save for the brief coda from the New Orleans-style horn players. *****+
The best place to start your journey with Cowboy Junkies.......2005-03-16
I'm writing this review to encourage readers who might have heard of Cowboy Junkies and want a good place to start. This is your album. Black Eyed Man is wonderful, soulful, perhaps even visual music that is bound to please you. The music here is very easy to listen to, has tracks that are easily distinguished from each other, and is memorable for the amblin' mood it creates. This is not "easy listening" in the elevator sense of the phrase - you can rest assured that you will find intelligent constructions and complex lyrics. For another fantastic place to start, try their album "Trinity Sessions" along with this one. The two together give you a strong foundation to explore the other styles of this talented band.
a quite underated gem.......2004-09-25
this entire album is exhilerating!i will take you through the highlights.they are:southern rain.the chick singer has a vaery pretty voice.also, they have a very unique sound.sort of too mellow to be alternative but too deep to be country.alison krauss like.the first song i really liked was the opener southern rain.a lot of country fans i know like this song.oregon hills is all about prison breaks, rednecks, wild teens and cheating wives.a porch-side look at small towns.a very bob dylan like lyrical gem this man, this street, that life.its very beautiful.the best song,i think is,if i were the woman and you were the man.on my favorite movie, natural born killers,it was micky and malloreys love theme.[it played as they were wed]it is a precious love song.it is a great album.

The Cowboy Junkies' Michael Timmins is a most literary songwriter. On the Toronto quartet's Pale Sun Crescent Moon, Timmins imbeds lines from William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom into the song "First Recollection" and a line from Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "The General in His Labyrinth" in the song "Seven Years" without it seeming the least bit awkward. He has found the perfect literary voice for his writing in his sister Margo Timmins, whose alto is all smoke and suggestion. Songs are not poems, however, and never was that distinction more obvious than it is here. The album's so-called songs float in atmospheric harmonies, unshaped by melody or meter. This droning music may seem haunting on first encounter, but by the third song the melodic monotony encourages dozing. --Geoffrey Himes

Subtle Charms.......2006-12-21
Another fine album from the Cowboy Junkies. "Pale Sun" is more brooding moody music created by Michael Timmins and sung by his sister Margo. Highlights include "Anniversary Song", "Crescent Moon", and the haunting "Floorboard Blues". I really find it hard to describe just exactly what this band does, but they do it so well it tends to seep into your being.
i think once you hear this album "your mind will change and your heart will lose it's pain".......2006-06-24
after 16 years this is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Margo's voice gets in your heart and you can feel her emotions as she sings. if you buy any albums by the cowboy junkies this should be the one.
Bill says.......2006-03-15
When she asks me what it is I am playing, I know the stuff is good. When she asks me to leave the music for her to play, I know the stuff is excellent. On this one she followed me and grabbed it. Five stars. You'll only need to play it once and you'll see.
It'll cut right through you.........2004-07-18
I'm generally indifferent to the Cowboy Junkies, but on this CD Margo Timmins' vocals reach right into your being. The tunes are outstanding and there are some nice rockers (for this band).
For those who like incandescent vocals, this CD ranks right up there with albums like Van Morrison's Veedon Fleece.
Other than Trinity Sessions, which is in a world of its own, I haven't been too impressed with the other CD's by this band, but in this effort Margo and the boys found something that reaches deep and will stay with you.
4.5.
My stars go to "anniversary song".......2004-02-11
I bought this c.d. probably 10 years ago for the 'anniversary song'. It is the best thing going for this tedious disc.
I like women in rock with harmonious and soothing voices, and the singer here definitely falls into the category. However, I found this album very boring, but her voice is excellent. Most of the songs sound alike with the exception of it's most commercial recording of the anniversary song.
I don't know their catalog of music but I hope that the rest of their records aren't as bland as this one. Just my thoughts..I seem to have the lowest star review here so other people seem to appreciate their haunting lyrics hopefully over their non melodies.

Nearing the twenty-year mark (their first album, Whites Off Earth Now!!, was released in 1986), Cowboy Junkies have devoted an album to a component that has informed their identity from the beginning: interpreting material written primarily by others. Two of the eleven songs are by Michael Timmins, the rest being arrangements of traditional material ("Two Soldiers" and "No More") and covers by a bracing mix of writers who have exerted an influence on the band over the years (Bob Dylan, John Lennon, George Harrison, Bruce Springsteen, U2, and Richie Havens). Much like gaining insights into someone by gazing at the titles on their bookshelf, these song choices both fit and embellish the already established portrait of Cowboy Junkies. Throughout, Margo Timmins gently unadorned bearing moves subtly between quiet sadness and quiet hopefulness. --David Greenberger
Album Description
In February, 2005 the Cowboy Junkies gathered together for five days of music making at their Clubhouse studio in Toronto. Each band member brought along a handful of their favorite songs by other writers -- songs which focused on the themes of war, violence, fear, greed, ignorance and loss. The atmosphere that week was so magical that the band decided to simply roll tape and document the sessions. The result is Early 21st Century Blues, an album filled with a very special intimacy unmatched since the Junkies released their landmark The Trinity Session album 18 years ago. Early 21st Century Blues features interpretations of songs from artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and John Lennon, plus two new Junkies originals, and is the Junkies' own "small document of hope" for the times we live in.

Best Covers.......2007-01-10
The Cowboy Junkies have been one of my favorites for a long time and when this album came out I was excited to hear them cover some new type material. Covers of John Lennon, U2 and Springsteen. Wow, my favorite modern blues band covering some of my favorite classic rock. I was in heaven. Excellent buy for any Junkies fan.
disappointment.......2006-07-07
this is one album by the cowboy junkies i won't be buying. such a let down. man, just get back to writing good music.
Good but not Great.......2006-06-29
I haven't listened to this one as much as I thought I would. All the numbers are at least OK, but to me none were memorable. There isn't a Misguided Angel or Powder Finger here. I am a fan of the Cowboy Junkies and I will listen to this many times, but I don't think it will be one of my favorites.
Cowboy Junkies' return to form.......2006-04-24
The Cowboy Junkies' 2004 studio album "One Soul Now" was flat-out boring, and the low point of a long way downward from the "Trinity Sessions" days. I didn't know whether the band still had a good record left in them, and I am glad to say that I was wrong.
"Early 21st Century Blues" (11 tracks, 59 min.) finds the Canadian foursome bringing us a mix of originals, covers and traditionals, to great effect. The 2 originals "December Skies" and "This World Dreams Of" are among the best songs Michael Timmins has brought in a LONG time. The covers include 2 from Burce Springsteen, of which "Brothers Under the Bridge" is outstanding, as well as Bob Dylan, Richie Havens, U2 and George Harrison, whose "Isn't It a Pity" is another highlight. The John Lennon cover "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier" is terrible, though, with a... rap (!?!) in the middle of the song. This alone keeps me from giving this album not more than 4 stars.
That said, the band is in great musical form throughout, and Margo Timmins' voice is as beautiful as ever. 2006 marks the 20th anniversary of this remarkable band. "Early 21st Century Blues" is a return to great form, and makes me excited again what Cowboy Junkies are up to next. If you like CJ, check out a band called Over the Rhine, with a very similar style of music (in fact, OtR and CJ have toured together on more than one occastion), you will not be disappointed.
Not that impressed..........2005-12-28
This seems a little perfunctory in execution and not as inspired as a new Cowboy Junkies studio album usually is. While these may be favorites of the band, they drag on for me, not to mention that Springsteen and U2 seem more commercial in the selection here than worthy. I don't hear Margo's voice rising above tribute level either.
I'd rather Mike write his own collection of gritty, war protest songs than to hear a collection of mostly covers by big names. Oh, well.

All about Disc 1.......2006-12-20
Maybe I've gotten spoiled by Miguel Migs and some of Naked Music's offerings. Discs 2 and 3 of this set are some of the most monotonous sounding, unoriginal mixes and vibes I've heard in a while.
Disc 1 is a totally different story, however. HOT grooves, thumpin' bass, and powerhouse vocals scattered throughout make OM SUMMER SESSIONS worth buying. A couple of gospel house tunes were a very nice surprise on an early morning ride to work when I felt like going back to bed -- especially when the gospel diva herself, Ann Nesby, makes a thrilling appearance. She doesn't even sing on her own albums like she does here.
I guess performances like that and the overall goodness of the first disc were what set my expectation for the rest of the set, which is shockingly dull by comparison. 2/3 of this collection of tunes is mediocre so I can't give the complete set more than 3 stars.
That said -- disc 1 is one of the best dance discs extant, almost up there with Naked Music's stuff. You'll have to decide if it's worth the baggage that it carries with it, lol.
Funky grooves.......2006-08-24
It doesn't take very long to establish a groove on this 3 cd set: possibly 3 minutes at most. The funky quality of the album reminds me of the likes of Soulive. There are male vocals on pretty much every track on the first disc. This is my first house of Om compilation so there are crowd cheers on some of the tracks as it is supposed to be live. My favorite grooves on the first disc have to be Ron Hall's "The way you love me" and Frankie Knuckles "Disco Shimmy." Micky More's "Victory Dance" carries the second album well. It is surrounded by some alright tracks. Audiowhores "Not going back" establishes a nice groove with horns sounding and the album ends well with Fourfeet. DJFluid's whole set is good, and adds the techno edge to the cds. There are some cool bass lines on all 3 cd's and some decent female vocals. Overall, a good compilation of funky grooves.

Open on the road..........2005-09-22
For a long time I didn't have a favorite Cowboy Junkies album, but "Open" sort of sneaked up on me and lodged itself in my CD player for weeks at a time. Nobody since Rickie Lee Jones (Flying Cowboys, anyone?) had done that to me, really.
So I seized this two disc set once I realized what it was. The live material is excellent, capturing the stage presence of the band. The video material is beautiful, highlighting the music. And the Michael/Margo Timmins interview material is engrossing, if some of the interviewer's questions verge on the worshipful--the principals are funny, thoughtful... it's...... nice. So I recommend this set highly, especially at the deep discounts you see here on Amazon.
Good Chance.......2005-09-03
"Open Road" is a good chance to see Cowboy Junkies. The band is always so discret, and in this CD/DVD they show a little more about themselves.
Another Great Live Cowboy Junkies Album / DVD..........2005-08-08
I bought this used (both CD / DVD) in a booklet package case instead of the double jewel case and I was extremely pleased what someone sold so I could buy it. This recording / filming has reconfirmed my thought that The Cowboy Junkies are one of the best bands still rolling the open road and progressing in the studio. Margo's voice is still stunning as ever with Michael Timmins ripping it up on electric guitar and the rest of the band keeping the rhythms forward. Michael T. is one of the most underated guitarist alive today, I'd say.
