The soundtrack to Road Trip veers away from the contemporary practice of hiring third-string alternative bands to cover classic rock tunes. That fact alone gives this entertaining collection a leg up on its filler-happy brethren. Road Trip--a cross-country, hormone-heavy romp featuring Canada's favorite headcase, Tom Green--boasts cuts from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Kid Rock (featuring Uncle Kracker), Buckcherry, and even Minnie Riperton. The underrated "Voodoo Lady" by Ween gets a second chance, as do Run DMC's "It's Tricky" and Twisted Sister's "I Wanna Rock," which sounds awfully quaint several years after frontman Dee Snider's ugly mug scared a nation. The shifting gears--from rock to rap to pop to soul--make this vehicle work as both a film soundtrack and a great disc for a road trip of your own. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2006-06-24

Granted there were a few more songs on the movie I would like to see on the CD, the CD didnt fall short of my expectations AT ALL!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Road Trip.......2006-05-08

I found the movie and the lyrics were well proportioned. The movie itself related to everyone who has ever been traveling, except for old foggies. I'm 45 and I still keep in touch with todays music. I listen to lyrics as well as beat.Your soundtract was right on the money for the movie .However, I do like certain types of sound.I liked about 6 out of 10 songs played.

1 out of 5 stars Road Trip Falls Short.......2006-03-24

The movie has a very long list of great music. The CD is pathetic. The person who decided to push this garbage as the official music from Road Trip should be fired. I feel fiscally raped!

5 out of 5 stars fromaphotograph, you are an idiot.......2005-02-08

the eels song "mr e's beautiful blues"on this soundtrack is the exact same song as the one entitled "mr e's beautiful blues" on daisies of the galaxy. i dont know what you are on. and by the way mr. e's beautiful blues on daisies of the galaxy is an extra track, not listed on the back of the CD. that might be part of your problem.
i give this soundtrack 5 stars solely on the merits of the eels contribution.

4 out of 5 stars The KGB Rocks!.......2004-04-07

I haven't heard the soundtrack yet, but i do know that it contains fortune and fame from the The K.G.B. and everyone should buy the soundtrack just to hear that song! and then find both of The K.G.B. cds (on ebay.com or half.com) or anywhere else you can find- you'll love it!

GO K.G.B. !!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sports Explosion.......2005-12-13

Sports Explosion has a driving high energy beat songs include; Come Baby Come; Get Ready for This; I Like to Move It; Mony Mony; Dance to the Music, The Twilight Zone, The Power, Na Na Hey Hey, and More... DJ's Choice does a fine job mixing Sports Explosion and it sounds great with a sub and fine for sports of all kinds including dance.

3 out of 5 stars Not really an explosion.......2005-06-11

I like my sports. Everyday I look at the box scores, check my fantasy sports teams, read Bill Simmons' column on ESPN, use my football phone(free with my SI subscription) to call my friends and I even play catcher in slow pitch softball. With that background, if anyone is going to know a sports explosion, it's probably going to be me. I would probably rate this compilation of songs a sports campfire. The irony of putting a song by the village people on a sports cd almost worth giving this thing 5 stars.

How do I know all of these songs you ask? I attend many sporting events and also run the DJ booth at the softball complex when my team isn't playing. I tend to run a little hot up in the booth like Maverick and have even been called dangerous, but if you want to whip fans into a frenzy at a slow pitch church league softball game, I'm the best option you have. I go with some of these songs as you can't go wrong with "I like to move it" and "Twilight zone" even though the version of twilight zone on this thing is different than the golden earring version I play. I tend to start the crowd off slow with something like "Dancing with Tears in my eyes" by Ultravox in the first couple innings. I then throw on a mix of Hasselhoff, Musical Youth and Catherine Wheel in the middle innings. Nothing throws gets the crowd more pumped up than "Black Metallic", you should try it. Actually, you should read my reviews and emulate what I do to the best of your ability. Things will improve for you in many areas. The late innings are where I tend to rile things up with the standards like "Rock n' Roll part 2", "Footloose" and "Sister Christian". I usually close with "Goodbye" by Hootie and the Blowfish after the game finishes. The umps kind of get mad because the crowd chants for me to keep playing songs like I'm turning out one of my wedding receptions, but I always get on the loudspeaker and say that although I appreciate their worship, the next game needs to start. All in all, I make the ballpark fun for the whole family. This CD isn't a bad one for your collection, but don't just rely on it alone with no backup.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2003-06-15

This is a great CD expect the YMCA song. The YMCA recording on this CD is really chesse sounding.

Yet another mess of colors (emphasis on mess) from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion that defies any particular grounding. This time, with Acme, the trio's fifth full-length, the frayed punk tones are replaced by more of a Beasties/Beck/Dust Brothers/white-guys-gone-phat sort of thing, where rat-a-tat beats and bone-crushing, speaker-frying bottom ends collide with shards of sweet soul, gospel, country, blues, and even some pummeling stoner rock as well as Spencer's own wacked-out Presley-Jagger vocal spew. Including the knob-twiddling participation of Steve Albini, Calvin Johnson, and, predominantly, the Automator (rapper-rocker Andre Williams gets the title of executive producer, whatever that means), Acme is an orgy of noise that occasionally even resembles actual songs. Certain to dazzle some, certain to scare plenty more. --Neal Weiss

    4 out of 5 stars BX rocks!.......2007-04-09

Tired of the same old thing? Than buy this CD now. I agree this type of music is not for everyone but if you have an open mind and like great rock music than check it out. Jon is a trip! I've seen him live playing with the Dickinson Brothers and he is so into it you get caught up in his enthusiasm. ACME is a refreshing change to the stagnating music industry.
    Dig it!

    4 out of 5 stars Blues Explosion.......2006-07-08

The best blues explosion album. A lot of his stuff is all swagger and destruction, this album retains the attitude but you can tell they actually spent some time writing songs this time, and it paid off.

5 out of 5 stars This is Blues Explosion.......2006-03-29

This is no deviation. This is the realization of what they were trying to do with previous albums. The Blues Explosion has always been about being bombastic and ridiculous, poking fun at the id of rock, which is the id of music, and thus embodying it. Distilled swagger, more image less substance. What has less substance, more image, and more swagger than samples and layered production?

The lyrics are the album's real strength, coherent without sacrificing the band's chaos, the best of any Blues Explosion album. Nothing profound or particularly original, just simple rock themes distorted through the Explosion's filter.

Have been burning all my CDs to the massive HD lately; few albums get more than 3-5 songs burned. This one gets 12. BTW,if you ever have the opportunity, this band is one of the best live bands around.

    4 out of 5 stars Whoop dang-a-lang!!!.......2002-02-01

THIS IS BLUES POWER, and when I mean blues power, I mean you
can pluck the feathers out of my blowhole; the JSBE are here to PAR-TAY, y'all, and to get YOU in the spirit! I tell you: when my little baby heard 'Lovin' Machine' and 'Talk About the Blues,' all finger-lickin'-good funk 'n' roll blooz, I got out my big old stew pot and had to make a soup out of her. Some of these songs rock. Some of them RAWK. (..). But it all sounds good where the rubber hits the road.

4 out of 5 stars An overall fun cd to listen to.......2000-08-05

This cd is full of an incredible mix of music that stands by it's own. If you want something to fry your speakers and freak out to, or just to chill, buy this cd. This my first JSBX cd, and i can't wait to get my hands on another one. Songs like Blue Green Olga and Calvin are simply great songs, while attack litteraly is a freakish explosion of noise and base that's a substitute to caffeine and could really startle you if you're not ready for it. A few songs, like "do you wanna get heavy" kinda get lazy and boring. But the funk and bass of the album mixed in with some memphis blues and xperimental hip-hop are flat out creative and set a new standard. JSBX is, in my opinion, a pioneer band, and can't be imatated.

Subtitled "Surviving the Northwest rock explosion," the film is a wry documentary about the rise and fall of Seattle as grunge central. The mostly-live original soundtrack covers every major (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), mid-size (Posies, Mudhoney), and shouldabeen (Fastbacks, Flop, Supersuckers) act imaginable. Think of it as an instant collection of rare Sub Pop, Frontier and C-Z singles. --Jeff Bateman

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars No Love Battery.......2006-12-05

The only thing stopping this from being 4 stars or more for me is the absence of Love Battery, arguably the most underrated band that came out of the Grunge scene (pick up Dayglo if you already haven't).

    4 out of 5 stars It's pretty good........2006-05-18

Not too much to say, it's a good cd and has a decent variety of sound. I like Touch Me Im Sick, but I am a little biast towards Mudhoney. It does put the motion picture in a good light however by exposing a larger portion of independant artists rather then focussing solely on the 'grunge' icons that would turn the entire scene into a flannel oriented long haired wasteland.

4 out of 5 stars Experience the true "Seattle Scene".......2005-04-29

This is a great CD, giving you a little taste of what Seattle was offering at the time. SG, AiC, PJ, and Nirvana weren't the only bands to come out of Seattle. You get tracks from virtual unknowns like the U-Men, Some Velvet Sidewalk, Flop, and many others. This is a good overview for anyone just getting into the grunge scene. Some highlights are "Return of the Rat," "Dig It A Hole," and "Mousetrap."

2 out of 5 stars In the words of one Seattle Grunge artist, Overblown .......2005-01-16

There is one question about the grunge explosion that was never answered. How come the fans of this music (and more pointedly, its journalistic defenders) hated this kind of thing with a passion when Black Sabbath was doing it better?

5 out of 5 stars lacking some stuff, but excellent for what's there.......2004-12-31

Hype! was a great documentary chronicling the ups and downs of the Seattle grunge scene. This soundtrack has a really interesting selection of songs, not only in that there are several bands that wouldn't be obvious choices for a grunge compilation, but also that the songs they chose for the obvious ones are non-obvious songs (ie, the Nirvana pick is "Negative Creep"). It seems to be "missing" quite a bit though. Where are Alice in Chains, Screaming Trees, Dickless, and Candlebox? Where's the side project stuff like Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and Brad? Where's all the rest of the interesting stuff the film delved into, like Coffin Break, Hammerbox, Zipgun, and Crackerbash (which had a prominent song in the movie, I thought this was a soundtrack?)? I guess they couldn't cover *everything*, though it would've been nice for this to be a double album with all the aforementioned bands represented. Despite that disappointment it's really hard to complain about this CD, as it contains 22 tracks of pure greatness, including several rarities, and, for everyone except the most expert of grunge connoisseurs, several bands that you otherwise wouldn't bother to check out. The liner notes are pretty weak, but that's just me nitpicking.

The fact is, this is 22 tracks of grunge, only a few of which would plausibly be in anyone's collection, none of which are hit singles or on hit albums, and all of which are excellent. Get it.

    4 out of 5 stars FLA Remixes & Rarities on 1 CD.......2005-07-17

This 12 track collection of the rare, the B-Sides and the remixes include some great previously unheard of FLA sounds and melodies. I have fast became a FLA fan. I have personally felt any piece of work or artistry by Leeb and Fulber or Peterson and Leeb is 99% a smashing hit. Whatever your tastes, whether you enjoy early FLA or the more recent releases, in this CD every listener will find a song or songs that they shall enjoy. There are 4 remixes which are some of the best remixes I have heard enterprising and collectively suave to listen and move your body too. The 'Colombian Necktie' Edit (track 6) is probably the best ever Remix of this song I have heard so far. The early and later sounds of FLA mix well together and one can pretty much hear the changes in styles and delivery.
This is for the hardcore FLA fans. And for all those FLA fans who are picking up every album one by one.

4 out of 5 stars excellent collection of transition period FLA.......2002-08-28

There was a stretch in 1999 when SPV/Offbeat couldn't release a bad cd, and this one is no different. Titled "Explosion" in probable reference to Front Line's then newly released _Implode_, it's a reasonably complete collection of four cd singles, two from the final period of Rhys Fulber's days with Leeb (Circuitry and Plasticity) and two from the beginning period of Chris Peterson's stay in the band (Comatose and Columbian Necktie.) As such they provide, in one collection, a fascinating bridge between the two different sounds and two different eras.

I say reasonably complete because it doesn't include Haujobb's mix of "Circuitry" or their own "Biosphere" mix of "Circuitry." But it does start off with the strongest mix of that song, the "Predator" mix. It also doesn't have Haujobb's mix of "Plasticity," or Eatstatic's mix of "Comatose." However, you do get everything else FLA did on those four discs, and two songs they didn't: the amazing "Hydrogen," almost worth the price of admission alone, and the "Alien" mix of Circuity, both from the limited edition of _Hard Wired_.

Both A and B sides from _Plasticity_ are here, the swan song for FLA's mark II lineup. Both of those tracks, "Plasticity" and "Replicant," are essential listening for FLA fans. "Epidemic" is another very strong track from the _Circuitry_ single, and "Deadlock" is a track from _Columbian Necktie_ with samples from the movie _Independence Day_. It's as perfect a blend of techno and industrial as you can find and a heavier emblem of the electronica influences found on _Flavour of the Weak_ and to a lesser extent, _Implode_. Finally, "Oblivion," the b-side from _Comatose_, completes the cycle, with sections that sound like samples from Orbital's _The Box EP_.

Only "Electrocution," a missing song that follows "Deadlock" on the _Necktie_ single, cries out for inclusion here. But this is already a strong compilation and should be in any collection that doesn't already own these four singles. There are those who feel techno influences cannot be mixed with industrial ones with success. Are they correct? Listen to this and decide for yourself.

    3 out of 5 stars I don't see the target?.......2000-01-08

Sure, this is a great disc, but honestly... Who is buying it? The diehard FLA fans (like myself) gets upset because it lacks one or two B-sides from every single and gets them instead.

The average FLA fan just won't bother as, even if it has some tops also has a lot of lows.

4 out of 5 stars This is NOT a remix CD of Implode!.......1999-12-13

Contrary to logical interpretation, Explosion is not a remix disc of Implode. It combines tracks derived from four singles that have supposedly been deleted: Circuitry, Plasticity, Comatose and Colombian Necktie. Here is the tracklisting for anyone who has not heard about it: 1. Circuitry (Predator mix) 2. Epidemic- B-side from Circuitry single 3. Plasticity- Single released after Hard Wired 4. Circuitry (Alien Mix) 5. Hydrogen- A track only included on a special version of the Circuitry single 6. Colombian Necktie (Tongue Fed Edit) 7. Deadlock- B-side from Colombian Necktie single 8. Replicant- B-side from Plasticity single 9. Comatose (Valium, 15mg) 10. Oblivion- B-side from Comatose single 11. Comatose (Ketamin, 45mg) 12. Colombian Necktie (GOarge mix by Tim Shuldt). If you own all four of the singles that this album is comprised of, only the Alien mix of Circuitry and Hydrogen will be of interest to you. However, if you do not have these singles and enjoy FLA's work, then I strongly recommend this album. The B-sides are a great addition along with the remixes, and of course the one and only Plasticity track is included, my favorite FLA track of all time. In conclusion, I will say that if you can appreciate FLA's style and don't own the singles, BUY IT NOW!

Following the creative peak that was 1994's Orange, Jon Spencer assembled a disparate group of top-drawer friends to remix some of that album's best tracks. He ended up batting just over .500 in the process. Beck and Mike D's treatment of "Flavor" is a sublime meeting of two of the '90s' hippest minds, and UNKLE's reworking of "Bellbottoms" brilliantly frames Spencer at his booty-callin' best. But the Dub Narcotic Sound System's rendering of "Soul Typecast" is painfully square, and Moby's take on "Greyhound" sounds flat and plastic. Still, Experimental Remixes deserves props for its prescience. Beck and UNKLE mainstay DJ Shadow weren't exactly toiling away in obscurity in 1995, but Spencer caught them on their ascent toward making some of the most innovative music of the postgrunge era. Keep an ear out for this album's "hidden" seventh track, a hilarious 18-minute collage of sound- check antics and awkward interviews, the soundtrack to Spencer's own personal Don't Look Back. --Matt Hanks

5 out of 5 stars hidden gem for jsbx fans.......2006-03-23

I totally disagree with the negative reviews posted here--this is NOT a throwaway album but in fact represents some of Spencer and crew's best work. The remix of "Flavor" with Beck and Mike Diamond is great, and so is Killah Priest's rap at the end of "Greyhound Part II." The UNKLE remix of "Bellbottoms" is also really good. If you can only afford one JSBX album then get Orange and then steal this one from a used CD store.

Basically, the John Spencer Blues Explosion was an exercise in postmodern fragmentation and musical recycling, and so it somehow makes sense that remixes make up some of their best work (I also like the Acme remixes better than the actual album), especially because they have such great musicians re-interpreting their work. I don't imagined that anyone slaved away in the studio for days trying to get an absolutely perfect mix, but again that's another reason why I love this record--it's just that much more punk rock. Spencer tends to get in more trouble when he's trying to get a perfectly polished sound.

Oh yeah, and the picture on the inside cover of the boys eating at some greasy spoon is priceless.

4 out of 5 stars Crap--except for the brilliant Greyhounds!.......2003-08-17

Take away tracks 5 and 6, and JSB have no right to charge people money for this rehashed bunch of goofing off in the studio. BUT, tracks 5 and 6--the Greyhounds--are so staggeringly beautiful and inspired, that they more than salvage the e.p. With the Greyhounds running, this e.p. makes for an essential part of my collection. You'd have to bite me really hard to get me to let go of this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Not conventional, but great.......2002-06-17

This was the first album I bought from the JSBX, adn I will never regret this for the rest of my life. This album has a nice but raw sound and is loaded with laughter. If you wish to experience the magic groups have on tour, you must buy this album.

    2 out of 5 stars If it ain't broke, don't fix it!.......2001-04-17

As much as I hate to admit it (being a die-hard JSBX fan) this album was a major disappointment. "Experimental Remixes" isn't anywhere near the standards of the ordinary JSBX- albums. Sure, the title says it's an experiment- and it sounds like it- but the result is a collection of extremely dull versions of songs from the "Orange" album. There is NOTHING left of the raw power from the Blues Explosion, not even Beck's versions of "Flavor" makes any impact- they are, just like the rest of this frustratingly bad album, pale immitations! Don't waste your money- if you like me just can't get enough Blues Explosion I suggest you buy "Orange" twice!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the 90's.......2001-01-14

This little gem is a true musical journey. The base material of the CD is the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, which is sort of a mixture of punk, rockabilly and blues - think Elvis meets the Sex Pistols. That alone would make a great CD, but this album is a remix which tells a sort of story. The remixes are done in many styles (from "alternative" to old style blues to hip hop) featuring guests like Beck and Killah Priest of the Wu-Tang Clan. Don't let the "remix" title fool you - this isn't Disco Star Wars, but more a case of taking the ball and running with it. The final product feels like an amazing live concert packed with a ton of energy.

      Product Description

So let's waltz back to New Year's Eve, l978. Tonight the Cellar Door club, sold out weeks in advance, is owned by Danny Gatton's instrumental aggregate, the Redneck Jazz Explosion. The crowd has come to see not only the guitarist presenting his virtuosic wares in all instrumental jazz setting but his pairing with pedal steel maestro Buddy Emmons. To quote Ralph Heibutzki from his 2003 biography, "Unfinished Business-The Life Times of Danny Gatton," the December 31, l978, Cellar Door gig has assumed legendary proportions for its place in Gatton history. Swearing you were there is akin to saying you saw the Beatles at the Cavern Club or caught the Yardbird's hot, sweaty nights at the Marquee." It's a great tribute to Danny that Buddy Emmons, who had not been on the road for years, did hit the highways with the Explosion.

The strange paradox that makes the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion so hard to figure--and them all the better for it--is that despite a brazen desire to flaunt their complete lack of authenticity with an absurdly over-the-top howlin' bluesman schtick, their music really does kick tons more ass than just about anything else being passed off as contemporary blues these days. Orange augments the usual mess of raw blues and primal rock with Philly soul strings, theremin, and Beck's guest rapping. The added flavors don't make these songs better, but then, the band's raw material--bashed out on two guitars and drums--rocks quite well on its own, thank you. --Roni Sarig

      Album Description

'Orange', the Blues Explosion open with a nod to a plush, Stax feel for the blues with the aid of a full string section. Other unusual touches include the use of scratching and a guest appearance by media sensation and blues aficionado Beck. Despite these unconventional elements, the disc is solidly grounded in the blues and can definitely be seen as the Blues Explosion's statement about the blues today. Digipak. 1994 Matador Records.

      5 out of 5 stars I'm always behind...........2006-03-08

I will admit to being about 10 years behind the rest of "hip" America when it comes to music. The year that the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion released arguably it's finest album, Orange, I was knee deep into bands with happy names like Slayer and Napalm Death. Then, I entered the realm of the liberal university life. There, I met friends who owned CDs from bands like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Guided by Voices, 30-Ought Six, and so on; bands that intrigued, but scared me. Yes, even more than bands with names reminiscent of love and flowers like Slayer and Napalm Death.

So when it came to reinventing myself as a late 20-something (not by choice, mind you), I decided to rediscover some of the music I missed out on in the mid 1990's. Orange fit that bill. The reality is, I have enjoyed this album for the better part of the past 10 years, but it wasn't until recently that I dusted off my copy and put it back into the rotation. I won't say what I think Orange or JSBX is a mixture of, because I don't have the slightest idea. What I do know is that it is an ecclectic mix of something, that when combined, is infectious and numbing all at the same time. Someone mentioned "memorizing" Orange...I suppose that it would be possible, if you were an idiot savant. Orange sounds more like an amalgamation of guitar and drums played by drunk 13 year olds than something you would hum on your walk to class. But despite the lack of any cohesive sound (in my opinion), there is something appealing about JSBX, and Orange in particular, that I can't put my finger on. So I'm not even going to try.

What I will say is that as bluesy rock music goes, I imagine JSBX is at the top of the list. I don't have any clue who else is on that list...and don't really care. Orange is a unique album that stands alone in terms of any genre or label you place it in. It is truly a fun album for fans of rock, blues, hip hop...whatever.

4 out of 5 stars "Good" Jimi Hendrix-ish blues rock - you might like it.......2006-01-11

"Orange" is not a great album, but it's not bad either - I think you'll simply be content with it. The singer isn't all that charismatic, but he at least sounds like he belongs in the band - I can imagine some people not liking him, though. The album is essentially Jimi-Hendrix-ish blues rock (not as much as The Mooney Suzuki, though). It's relatively well produced, and it at least sounds inspired and seemingly original. I think they definitely have their own unique sound (though it obviously has a lot of influences). Thankfully every song here is good, though none stand out as "great". The lyrics tend to be pretty impossible to make out, and even when you can they aren't that interesting anyway. They do have a pretty good sense of humor in some of the songs, however (see "Flavor" for an example). Overall it's merely a "good" record. Blues-rock fans should like it, but not greatly. Recommended.

      Highlights include:
      the entire album!

4 out of 5 stars Nice beat-up photo of the CD on amazon, looks like my copy.......2005-11-03

The "blues" pose of JSBE doesn't always hit the spot for me ("Now I Got Worry," anyone?). But hey, what's in a name. Could a band possibly have more stage energy and swagger?

This one hits that spot, every single time. It's barely restrained sexuality (okay, it's not restrained at all) leaks out of your speakers as the band threatens to leap out of them.

I also enjoy the album they put out with Dub Narcotic Sound System.

I suppose that I am a new convert to the Blues Explosion. I kept hearing them on accuradio. Apperantly, they have been around for a long time. How would I describe the Blues Explosion? I would call it black explosion. It's more like the Beastie Boys with a crazy, howling front man. But however you want to describe it, it really is a well honed sound. You can tell the influences but that they are very well blended. Excellent rock n roll.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues IS Number One.......2005-01-10

This is one of my desert island discs that I'll never grow tired off. Orange is the pinacle of JSBX.

Jon Spencer may just be a skinny white boy fron NYC, but he somehow captures (or emulates) that sort of old, dirty blues sound. And yet, explodes it! With... rock and roll.

From the opening instrumental, to the classic scream-along Flavor (see how many cities you can toss in as well, once Jon starts naming them off). This is a perfect hard-driving, rock record.
