Customer Reviews:
A CD that leaves us feeling in high spirits and content with the overall set.......2007-03-17
Playing Time - 48:47 -- Last Train Home continues to ride the wave. While based in the Washington area, they won a dozen WAMMIEs (Washington Area Music Awards) and have built both a solid reputation and fanbase over the years. Last Train Home's latest eclectic alt-country effort (their fourth album overall) includes eleven originals, ten by guitarist/vocalist & frontman Eric Brace and one penned by guitarist Steve Wedemeyer. The band has been cranking out the tunes for about ten years, and Brace relocated to Nashville in 2003. Delivering a confident and personalized roots rock sound, Last Train Home also includes Jen Gunderman (keyboards, accordion, percussion), Jim Gray (bass), and Martin Lynds (drums, percussion). Jen and Martin contribute background vocals. Also appearing in the mix are Kevin Cordt (trumpet), Claire Small (backing vocals on "The Color Blue"), and Tom Mason (banjo on "You").
The title track opens the set with a desire to move on beyond broken hearts and promises despite the availability of one "last good kiss." The set makes a dynamic segue to the melodic electric guitar riff of "Flood," a song about being carried away on the rising tide of love. A poignant ballad with acoustic overtones, "Anywhere But Here" expresses the yearning to find new direction. In fact, many of Brace's sentiments are about his optimistic needs, wishes and dreams, through thick and thin, always trying to keep an upbeat attitude despite adversity and rejection. Gunderman's accordion gives the band a distinctive Texas border sound, and my guess is that they're building a legion of fans in the Lone Star State at roadhouses and dance halls where they perform. The 5-minute "Go Now" and 7-minute "May" express some of Brace's most pensive and reflective moments -- "be brave enough to let it all in, always give more than you take." Putting these two relaxed songs back-to-back at the midpoint of the set creates a whole different mood, one that is captivating but some may feel is enervating and causes the set to lose some of its energy. I hope that lyrics for their songs will be uploaded soon to the band's website because listeners need to contemplate and reflect upon them.
The second half of the set make some clear and convincing statements, but I felt some additional background vocals would have sweetly embellished choruses on songs like "I'm Coming Home," "Kissing Booth," and "Marking Time." The combination of percussion, trumpet and Claire Small's vocal backing make the album's unique closer, "The Color Blue" awash with an impressionistic azure character that leaves us feeling in high spirits and content with the overall set. soulful and danceable.......2005-11-20
Eric Brace and Last Train Home just keep getting better and better. "Bound Away" is by turns joyful, smokin', soulful, thought-provoking, and all of the above at the same time. It's the kind of music that you want to crank up when you're doing any kind of routine chore---only beware, because chances are that you'll end up grooving down in the kitchen instead of doing the dishes. At last, country music that's as original as it is unsentimental.
I just like good songs.......2005-06-04
this is a very strong album. its an interesting mix of originals and covers, and (as usual with these guys) styles. Eric Brace has a wonderful, souful, and distinctive voice that truly makes this band click. jeff lange's incredible guitar (in particular on gravedigger blues and bound away) give this album less of blue grass/country feel than their others, but that doesnt mean its any less of a beautiful sound. one of LTH's strengths over their few albums has been selecting material from a few of the dc areas unsung, but terrific songwriters, and they do it again here. the band's cover of Karl Straub's dark and cryptic "they dance real close there" is just right -- (this song is really one finest pieces of songwriting you will ever find) ; and Kevin johnson's "marlene" that starts the album is a wonderful tune.
and the originals are excellent too; eric's "flipping quarters" is one of their best. the only critique is that absence of the strong harmonies that LTH's earlier albums featured.

A Local DC Treasure.......2003-01-12
Eric Brace is the lead voice for a group of multi-talented songwriters, singers and multi-instrumentalists who know how to crank the party up just when it's getting a little too blue...If there's any justice left in Musicland, these guys will have a contract soon and will be able to buy out the local clubs they sell out on a regular basis just for fun. I've had one of their cds in my car for months and just don't see any reason to take it out! Paying homage to roots of traditional country, bluegrass, rock-n-roll and even a little bit of the blues, with both feet firmly on 2003 ground, Last Train Home offers up songs that stick in your brain and never leave (and that IS a good thing). Highlights are the opener, "List of Sorrows", live favorite "Sugar", "Long Time Gone" and the softly sad "Tonight", but every song on this cd is a winner. Multiple guitars, including a pedal steel, symbiotic rhythm from the duo of bassist Jim Gray and drummer Marty Lynds and the sweet icing of a well-utilized horn section round out this fabulous band.
homegrown music at it's best.......2001-09-27
An absolute jewel of music. More heart and feeling than anything that has been released in recent years. From beginning to end there is not one bad track to be found. Treat yoursef and your ears to a one in a million unpolished gem of music.
See them live!.......2000-02-02
They made me a fan of alt-country...and that was no easy task. If you enjoy this album at all, check them out live. It's worth it.
bluesy romantic music that makes you want to dance.......1999-11-06
These bluesy, folksy tunes are both so sweet and so lyrical that you don't know whether to dance or to just sit still and take in the mood. Most of the songs are flat-out romantic (without being sentimental, coy, or sacharine)---the kind of songs that every girl fantasizes were written about her. These are tunes that fill your head and transport you to a sweeter realm---
Achingly beautiful.......1999-05-25
pull up a chair on the back porch some hot summer evening, pop open a cold Schlitz and enjoy the bittersweet memories of love gone by

LTH Greatest Hits III.......2003-11-06
Yes, this should be called LTH's Greatest Hits Volume 3. It's a wonder these guys haven't been picked up by a major label yet! Their lives shows are amazing and their cover songs are even better than the original artists' versions (see "So Long Baby, Goodbye" from the Blasters' tribute album). "Quarter to 3" is an up-tempo LTH classic, complete with the train references. The tempo changes in "All Right Okay" turn a good song into a great one, and I love the female background vocals. Eric's brother Alan sings on the groovy "He's the Kind"-- they know how to do classic R & B. My favorite is "Once in a While." I just love it when they add in the trumpet! Don't just buy THIS album...buy them all!
Extraordinarily pleasant.......2003-08-09
Alt.county fans, stop here! Starting with "Lorelei," a song you'll find humming all day, this amazing collection of songs will begins its journey at a place of happy-go-lucky love with stops at some wistful moments and sobering memories to a destination of reminders of days long ago. This CD is a soundtrack for long car trips, slow commutes, family reunions, and Saturday housecleaning. Their arrangement of Bill Monroe's "Walls of Time," will simply blow your socks off, horn section and all.
Incredible.......2003-03-07
Incredible music, lyrics, and vocals. You'll find yourself singing these songs all day long. Eric Brace has outdone himself lyrically. The CD gives each member of the group a chance to shine -- and what a powerful reflection of the true talents and efforts of local musicians. They radiate through our hearts and minds. Best of all, LTH has given of itself freely to all for the explicit appreciation of life.
LTH is what's good in this world!

Customer Reviews:
Great Alternative Country/Rock/Pop/Bluegrass.......2007-07-04
Track 5 is my favorite. Tracks 1, 4, 8, 9, and 10 are great, but so different that the album's genre is hard to classify. Overall, the CD fell just shy of getting five stars from me, and that's only because three of the songs were just not quite at the same level as the others. I'd recommend this CD to a friend as a good value - this is a top notch group that'll have your friends asking how you discovered them.
A Standing Ovation for Last Train Home.......2003-04-22
True passion for music is heard in every note. The instrumentals are phenomenal, (love that ol' blues harp) and compliment lead singer Eric Brace's deep, rich voice to perfection. Great Traveling music, walking music and relaxing music. Don't expect the songs to all sound the same because diversity is the name of the game. Highly recommended!! I own all of LTH CD's!!!
Rockin' Roots Rock.......2003-04-02
Last Train Home is a roots rock band, not country. If you love country music, you may not like this, for roots rock is a derivative of country, and not in a bad way. LTH has bluegrass, country, soul, and rock-n-roll influences. When LTH blends them together, and you get a wonderful smooth feeling that leaves you satiated all day long.
Sublime, Real & Rewarding.......2002-09-30
An outstanding audio portrait of the examined life, filled with romantic nuance and raucous revelry. Take a ride on the Last Train Home and find the lodestar within.
True North, indeed.
Oustanding in every aspect, highly recommended.
Very poor.......2002-03-27
I've heard about this band around town (Nashville). A few people like them others think they are highly overrated. I agree with the latter. This cd is for people looking for silly, fluffy over produced country music. Every song, besides some of the covers, seems Derivative and hollow. I would not recommend this cd or any of this bands cd's to any true music enthusiast.
