Great Stuff.......2007-06-25
I love this soundtrack, and can't wait to see a LIVE production! There is so much terrific music on here. It is really refreshing. Actors looking for new audition material have to buy this album. Songs like "It's all about me" are perfect for a performer with the right acting chops.
Broadway Bound!.......2007-06-22
This music and story is very reminiscent of A Chorus Line.telling the story of what transpires pre-Broadway auditions. Its like Part One of A Chorus Line.Something like what Wicked is to The Wizard of Oz..what went on before the story we all know by now.The lyrics are sometimes humourous, and at other times full of heartfelt pathos, but a great mix of emotions coming from these young college hopefuls while planning their futures, all aiming to be on the stage. It sounds like a hummable, old fashioned musical that should wind its way to, and should remain on Broadway, forever, delighting audiences both old and young. Everyone can find something to like in Green Room. I absolutely love it and I've worked in the theater business while living in NYC so have heard just about everything in Broadway musicals. This has the earmarks of a big beautiful Broadway success written all over it!! nothing can stop these boys!.......2007-06-22
C. Stephen Foster and Chuck Pelletier are genius'. they've written a smart, witty, incredibly entertaining musical about four angsty kids with growing pains.
The show is about four kids in college, taking a theatre track. one of them is gay and questioning, another serves as the "patriarch," a third as the "lost little lamb," and yet another who only wants to get what she wants, when she wants it, but makes the best of what she gets instead.
The musical score is very well written, and the lyrics are intelligent and edgy. Picture "Avenue Q" meets "A Chorus Line" but marries "Spring Awakening," and you have a fairly good idea of what "The Green Room" is. Though, one couldn't POSSIBLY classify "The Green Room" with any other musical, as it stands out and shines on its own.
The musical styles vary, and while it may seem hard to follow (according to one review), give the musical such an all-encompassing feel that provides for a wonderful musical romp!
I, like many others, would not be surprised if this show makes it to New York City. Foster and Pelletier make for a wonderful team, and their successes thus far can only be heightened, should this show come to light.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who can stomach content, for it is a shear delight and wonderful musical theatre experience.
Awesome!.......2007-06-20
I just bought "The Green Room" and really enjoyed it. Some of the songs are stuck in my mind and I keep singing them over and over in my head, so I guess that's a good sign. It's fun and lively, and I really enjoyed the irreverent humor.
A Mixed Bag.......2007-05-21
It's okay. Nice to have a small original musical, but it's uneven musically and lyrically and hard to follow the story.

After the release of Farmhouse, Phish took a two-year break during which the Vermont jam band released a slew of live albums and splintered into several side projects: Singer-guitarist Trey Anastasio made a solo disc and recorded with Oysterhead, his all-star outfit with former Primus bassist Les Claypool and former Police drummer Stewart Copeland; bassist Mike Gordon collaborated with Leo Kottke and made a movie about Gov't Mule; drummer Jon Fishman made an album with Pork Tornado; and keyboardist Page McConnell released an album as Vida Blue. Despite anxiety that the separation may have disrupted the band's raw chemistry, when the members of Phish regrouped in the studio under the pretense of rehearsing for a New Year's Eve show they walked out with this album four days later. Clocking in just past the 78-minute mark, Round Room is looser and more relaxed than its predecessor. Although stately, spiraling songwriting remains at the fore, there is a charming tossed-off air to Gordon's "Mock Song" ("Penny, thistle, cell phone, blow / Reap what you sow," goes one verse) and Anastasio's "Thunderhead" ("I need a new way to express myself so you don't need to guess"). More encouraging still, the weaving guitars and chugging rhythms mark another step closer to capturing Phish's live prowess on tape. --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
The wait is over. After going on an indefinite hiatus that ended up lasting over two years, Phish has reunited and, with astonishing speed, recorded 'Round Room', their first studio album since 2000's acclaimed 'Farmhouse'. Elektra. 2002
Customer Reviews:
Not my favorite, but still really good........2007-05-06
A lot of heads don't like this album, and I don't understand why because I have enjoyed since the band has released it. 'Pebbles' is great. Trey had debuted the song on his solo tour either earlier in 2002 or 2001 and Phish definately made it their own. 'Anything but Me' is a very enjoyable slow song and actually has some decent lyrics. 'Round Room' is pure Mike and you gotta love it. 'Mexican Cousin' is about as meh as it gets. 'Friday' is decent with some good guitar work (check out a live version). 'Seven Below' sounds good on the album but it really came into it's own during the band's tours starting with February 2003 (a stand-out version from 07/13/2003 is used as the filler on Live Phish 07/29/2003.) 'Mock Song' is pretty meh (the band only performed it once live.) '46 Days' seemed to become very popular during the band's final tours and was one of the more beloved post-hiatus songs (a stand-out version appears on the IT DVD.) 'All of these Dreams' is pretty meh. 'Wall of the Cave' is just awesome. This song really fit well as a set closer the last couple of years and the band really performed some great versions of this song live (Check out Live Phish 02/28/2003 for a remarkable version.) "Thunderhead" is another Trey Solo leftover, but not bad FWIW. The album closes with "Waves", which is arguably the best post-hiatus song, and if Phish had continued past 08/15/2004, this song is probably the direction their song-writing and jamming-style would have taken. Overall, I love this album. It definately put my doubts to rest while I was worried about how they would during the interval between the hiatus ending announcement in August of 2002 and their first show coming back on 12/31/2002.
A first look at Phish.......2006-12-17
My (rather late) introduction to Phish came rather indirectly via one of my favorite jazz improv CDs, "The Illustrated Band" by Vida Blue, which features Phish keyboardist Page McConnell. It made me realize that there was at least one astounding musician in this band, so, based solely on reviews here on Amazon, I chose to get hold of "Round Room." Having been an off-and-on fan of the Grateful Dead since the 1960s, I can't help making the comparison, because to my ears much of the jamming sounds very similar, especially the Garcia-like guitar work and, at times, the group harmonies. This is a good thing, however, since the band doesn't copy or rip off the Dead in any way, but seem to have merely picked up a few of their sounds along the way. The songs here are terrific, with lots of great written lyrics, complex music, and some very adept improvisations on guitar and keyboard. My only complaint about "Round Room" is that it sounds a bit sloppy and unsure at times, maybe a little like the Dead's less successful, off-night, live recordings. I can understand the band's desire to keep a fresh take rather than beating it into the ground with multiple attempts to record the "perfect" track, but more practice might have been in order. Not bad, though.
Definitely different Phish.......2005-05-31
I love Phish to death, and I can go for all their stuff, whether it is the earlier, spontaneously musical stuff, or this.
I only own four or five of their studio albums, but it seems to me that in the Beginning, they just got together to play music, and didn't focus on planning out the music, or spending large amounts of time writing songs. The lyrics on songs such as "Dinner and a Movie" reflect this.
On "Round Room" however, it sounds like they really put a lot of effort into writing awesome lyrics and (for the most part) awesome music. The music seems a bit forced sometimes, but the lyrics are simply amazing. "Pebbles and Marbles" is a song that has very personal meaning to me, and I'm sure it means different things to different people. "Round Room" is the most charming love song ever, and it has an awesome intro!
"I went to the lighthouse and I liked the view
I looked out the window and I could see you"
"Mexican Cousin" is an interesting song, that I really like. "Walls of the Cave" is another song that has personal meaning to me. It's really got profound lyrics.
My Personal Favorite.......2005-04-02
Phish has given us a studio album that is just as exciting as their live shows with Round Room! They played whatever they wanted to play with less outside contributors. The only difference from Round Room and Junta is the jams flow differently. Wich is not a bad thing if you are not expecting the usual Phish vibe. No... this is a very different Phish cd. the guitar solo on "Pebbles And Marbles" is reminicent of Jimmi Hendrix.
Never Really Gets Going.......2005-01-25
I love Phish music and don't bash stuff just for perverse fun. I also own and enjoy all their other studio releases.
But honestly, this is not a good cd. It never really gets going. Each song sounds like a laidback intro. I kept waiting for the "real song" to kick in. After a few minutes the next "intro" starts. It sounds to me like Trey and Mike are trying so hard not to get in each others way that they end up doing nothing. And the lyrics. Yikes. Frequently a little loopy, here they are embarassingly hippy-dippy.
I guess this is a glimpse into why it ended.

The recordings that Giulini made with the Chicago Symphony between 1969 and 1976 document an extraordinary partnership and remain among the finest of the conductor's career. Giulini's Mahler First is more lyric than most, yet with enough energy to satisfy Mahlerians; the last movement a tribute to the conductor's unerring sense of orchestral balances even in crushing climaxes. His rendition of the orchestral movements of Berlioz's "dramatic symphony" Romeo and Juliet excels in its poetry, the warmly caressing Chicago strings in the Love Scene irresistible. The Beethoven Seventh is an eloquent blend of the Dionysian and Apollonian approaches to this "dance symphony," with glowing horns, driving rhythms and lovely solo turns. Giulini's later remakes of the Beethoven and other works in the set often were soporific; here, he's on target. This Bruckner Ninth, for example, is grandly rhetorical but full of passion. The Brahms Fourth is a highly personal account, with a ravishing slow movement, while the Stravinsky ballet suites reveal the Chicagoans at their most refined; the Firebird exquisitely colored, Petrushka, amazingly precise. Classic recordings, well transferred; a bargain that shouldn't be missed. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
A mixed bag from Giulini.......2006-12-14
I have always been a fan of Giulini's conducting since I began listening to Classical. In this case, I bought this disk for four reasons 1. You can never have too many recordings of Bruckner or Mahler. 2. It's Giulini for God's Sake. 3. I was curious to hear a remastering of his sensational Brahms 4. 4. I could finally get his fantastic Firebird Suite on CD. Mission accomplished...however the Brahms and Stravinsky are the highlights on this disk and I already had those recordings (although it was nice to get an upgrade to CD). The Mahler is clearly outclassed by competition from Kubelik and Horenstein. The Bruckner bested by Jochum or Tintner on Naxos. I don't regret buying the disk, however, while I have multiple recordings of the Brahms and Stravinskky...Giulini's readings will always have a special place for me.
Thanks to EMI ; Thanks to Amazon. .......2005-10-14
Giulini is always among my favorite conductors and this set includes some of his great recordings with CSO(1969-1976,studio,stereo) that you can not find their another editions: Beethoven 7 and Bruckner 9 ( + Mahler 1, Brahms 4, Berlioz-Romeo&Juliet, Stravinsky-Petroushka&Firebird Suites.)
CSO on its top form under the baton of Giulini...Very well recorded sounds by EMI...Wonderfull edition(not cardboard!)...Incredible price for 4 CD... Highly, highly, highly recommended...
A nostalgic return to an outstanding period for Giulini.......2005-10-09
The reviewer who says that these are among the most celebrated of classical recordings is exaggerating. Giulini's Chicago recordings for EMI were mostly commercial failures and quickly vanished from sight after a brief life on LP. After a spectacular early stretch with Don Giovanni, the Marriage of Figaro, and the Verdi Requiem, Giulini should have shot to the top tier of recording artists.
But as one hears on this excellent but not great collection, Giulini's Mahler is not as exciting as Bernstein's, his Berlioz not as gripping as Colin Davis's, his Brahms not as full of integrity as Klemperer's or Karajan's. He stood well below those great condcutors for much of his career, and yet Giulini was undoubtedly special. He just continued throughout his career to be spotty. His Bruckner Seventh on a live BBC recording is spectacular, even better than his inward, mystical recordings of the Burckner Eighth and Ninth for DG. I greatly admire his DG Schumann Rhenish Sym., his Erocia and Beethoven Fifth, and a live War Requiem and Schubert Ninth, both on BBC--while also acknowledging that he made many other recordings that didn't touch greatness.
I think Giulini had greatness in him, but there was some inner chemistry that had to fire, and even he didn't know when that would happen. In this regard he was like Klaus Tennstedt, who was even more erratic.
Giulini should have given us a great Mahelr Ninth and Das Lied von der Erde, but he didn't. HIs Missa Solemnis and Beethoven Ninth should have been towering spiritual achievements, but they are actually almost routine by great conductor standards. Sadly, he had no sublime autumn to his career; the late recordings on Sony and DG are distressingly slack and ponderous, often parodying his famous spirituality on the podium.
I think eveyrthing in this bargain set is of a high standard, not Giulini at his very peak but close.
Splendid EMI Commemorative of Giulini and CSO.......2005-02-22
During the period from 1969 to 1976, distinguished conductor Carlo Maria Giulini made magnificient recordings for both EMI and Deutsche Grammophon with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, while serving as the orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor. These recordings remain among the most celebrated classical music recordings ever made, most notably his Mahler symphony recordings. In honor of the retired conductor's 90th birthday, EMI has issued most of his finest Chicago Symphony Orchestra recordings; most notably a very intensely lyrical Mahler 1st Symphony that earned a 1971 Grammy Award for best orchestral recording and a fine Brahms 4th Symphony. Often underrated as among the 20th Century's greatest conductors, I am delighted that EMI has recognized Giulini's legacy by issuing this fine 4 CD set.
Genius Well Served.......2004-10-07
Carlo Maria Giulini's long collaboration with the musicians of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra yielded some of the most magnificent performances of the twentieth century. But while the CSO's brilliance was widely known, Giulini's success in focusing attention on the music rather than himself kept his own prodigious talents hidden from portions of the art-music world. This remarkable four-CD set helps to correct that oversight. Included in the collection is the long-overdue reissue of the Giulini-CSO Mahler Symphony #1, which won a Grammy for best orchestral LP in 1971, and a ravishing account of the Brahms Symphony #4, which Giulini first conducted at a concert celebrating the liberation of Rome in 1944.
Giulini performances mesmerized listeners from the opening downbeat, and the spell was rarely broken. Every phrase was shaped, yet sounded entirely natural. The music breathed as if driven by the human soul, rather than by the inanimate metronome. No detail was too small, yet the whole was not lost. The sound had an inner glow, with the viola and cello parts bathing the top and bottom lines with color and warmth. Lyrical passages flowed with a transcendent beauty; fiery sections cut the air with knife-edged precision and power. Climaxes accomplished their purpose without skewing orchestral balances. Through it all, players eagerly and lovingly responded to Giulini's overarching request: "Touch the heart."
Because of his sensitivity to the music's architecture, Giulini preferred to record entire movements in a single take. As such, his performances should be experienced in context, i.e., from beginning to end. Also, Giulini's extraordinary attention to detail is best appreciated in a suitably quiet setting, and on excellent sound equipment.
Giulini sought to make every moment of every performance meaningful and memorable. He loathed the mundane in music-making, and saw his role as "serving genius." Giulini interpretations often left listeners with the sense that they had just heard a great masterpiece for the first time.
"There was never any show about him," longtime Philharmonia Orchestra violinist Gillian Eastwood told WFMT Radio and EMI Classics as part of a four-hour documentary celebrating the now-retired conductor's ninetieth birthday in May 2004. "He was genuine, he was sincere in his music, he worried about everyone individually. The likes of him we shall never, ever see again."
Which is all the more reason to treasure these performances for the ages.

Firebird: one of the best in a crowded field.......2007-06-04
When I first got into classical music back in the late 1950s, I joined a record club called the Music Appreciation Records Society. They issued recordings on a periodic basis, with various orchestras and conductors, and also an analysis record with narration and recorded excerpts to help the listener delve more deeply into the music. In 1961 they issued Stravinsky's "Firebird" with George Szell (and an unnamed orchestra, although everybody knew it was the Cleveland); I bought it, and nearly wore it out with my old vinyl-grinder needle. This performance has been
re-issued on the Sony "Essential Classics" CD label, and to me, it remains the best "Firebird" ever issued. The atmosphere of the opening is spooky and ethereal; the Infernal Dance is hair-raising; and the pacing and buildup of the Finale is thrilling. Throw in reissues of "Petrouchka" and Ravel's Suite No. 2 from "Daphnis and Chloe", and you have over an hour of great music in remastered sound.
Best Recording of the Firebird Suite Ever! Buy it Now!.......2004-04-15
This recording of the Firebird Suite(1919)with George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra is easily the greatest recording of this piece in history. Szell meticulously contains the orchestra in the ominous introduction and the ensuing flight and slow movement, making the beginning sound more menacing than any other recording and the slow parts absolutely beautiful. Then he lets the orchestra burst out in the Infernal Dance, hands down the most exciting Infernal Dance ever recorded, one that must be heard to be believed. Szell doesn't need to artificially speed up the tempo as the dance progresses to ratchet up false excitement;his steady tempos are just perfect and complement the virtuosity of this amazing orchestra, especially the brass. All but the most jaded will have their pulses pounding during this Infernal Dance.
(Go to classicstoday.com in the review of the recent Jarvi/Cincinnati Firebird on Telarc to see that they agree with my assessment of the Szell). The ensuing Lullaby is done beautifully and then Szell lets the orchestra rip loose again in the amazing Finale, which again doesn't resort to phony tempo increases to build excitement, but rather relies on the brilliant conducting of Szell and his unbelievable orchestra to create excitement. The Daphnis suite is one of the best I've heard and Ormandy's Petrouchka is flawless but the real treat here is the Firebird. Don't be tempted by the "hi-fi sound" of more recent recordings;sound can't compensate for performance quality. Even if you already own 100 recordings of this piece you must buy this one. The others will pale in comparison.
Life's too short for "solid" performances.......2002-08-24
Having heard good things about this interpretation, and normally liking Ormandy a lot, I was terribly disappointed in his 1964 Petrushka. The music very seldom "dances". The whole affair seems leaden (and, if you're up for that sort of Petrushka, you'd be better off with Klemperer's weighty but interesting account on Testament). "Bloated" is what I'd say about this one -- the Philadelphia virtuosos can't rescue it from Ormandy. One feels Ormandy probably only liked The Firebird of Stravinsky's compositions. The ugly spot-miking of the Columbia engineers doesn't help; it's terribly obtrusive. Good luck, too, with Szell's Firebird and Daphnis; I thought they were heartless.
Excellent.......2002-06-11
Stravinsky is one of the best composers of all time and this recording shows why. both suites, Petrushka and Firebird highlight stravinsky's strengths in composition, showing a light and pleasant side as well as a romantic side as well as a powerful and passionate side. this recording also gives us an excellent snippet of Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe.
Solid Performances in Every Way.......2001-03-20
These three performances of some of the 20th century's finest ballet scores are excellent, especially for the price. Ormandy's Petrushka perfectly balances the simplicity of the work's folk melodies with the frantic, macabre, atmosphere of the ballet's story. His slow tempos in several sections (The Shrovetide fair at the beginning for example), add a strength and bombast to the work that is lacking when it is hurried through. Szell's recording of the Firebird Suite is just as excellent. The Infernal Dance and Finale are particularly astounding, with the brasses of the Cleveland Orchestra tearing through the dance with energy and drive and putting majesty and triumph in the finale. Finally, there is the Daphnis et Chloe, which again is a solid performance. For the price of this CD and the excellence of the recordings, I highly recommend it.
