5 out of 5 stars One of Barry's Best recordings!.......2007-05-26

For the uninformed listener who can only think of "Mandy" and "Copa" when they hear Barry Manilow's name 2:00AM Paradise Cafe will a pleasant surprise. This is the CD I listen to when I want the finesse of smooth jazz but with the added Manilow magic. I wish there were more music like this from the premier entertainer of our century. Mr. Manilow's musical catalog never ceases o amaze me.

5 out of 5 stars the short list.......2007-02-02

This is on my short list for the desert island. After all of these years this is one of my very favorites. It is too bad Barry isn't writing songs anymore. This is an exceptional album that is only burnished by time.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise Cafe.......2006-11-06

This is one of the best smooth jazz CD's Ive heard, particularly the duet with Mel Torme. All of the selection are excellent and the back up group, especially Gerry Mulligan is superb. A must have CD.

5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2006-08-08

If this isn't one of the finest jazz recordings in history, I don't know what is.

Recorded in one take, with the exceptions of Mel Torme's and Sarah Vaughaun's pieces, this album incorporates some of the saddest, coolest pieces of jazz music ever recorded.

The musical phrasing is amazing. Mulligan's saxophone is so mournful, it sounds at times like a melancholy cello. The guitar work is brilliant. The drums subtle. The piano sublime.

Manilow once told the story of how he wrote the music to "When October Goes". If I remember the story right, Johnny Mercer's widow brought him the short poem, saying her husband wanted Manilow to write the music. Manilow sat down at the piano and, 15 minutes later, the tune was complete.

No wonder the ancient Greeks believed in the muse. Amazing.

And every time I hear the opening bars of piano, I swear I can see in my mind's eye the colored red and yellow leaves of fall floating down to earth on a chilled breeze.

Manilow's vocals are from a time when his voice was clearest and his vibrato tightest. The duets with Sarah Vaughaun and Mel Torme are etherial.

This album is special. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Juicy Barry-Jazz.......2006-08-06

Barry continues to display his versatility as the superbly talented artist he is with this very different Manilow album, a fine collection of jazz. Eleven mighty-fine arrangements, all music by Barry. All are hauntingly soft and beautiful melodies that you might hear in a cocktail lounge during the wee small hours of the morning. We are all familiar with the peaceful "When October Goes," the only song included which is not jazz, in my opinion, but it fits nicely into this album.

Guest stars on the album include the Greats: Sara Vaughan and Mel Torme. "Blue" is the duet between Barry & Ms. Vaughan. "Big City Blues" is Barry's duet with Mr. Torme. Both songs are well crafted and are also soft cocktail jazz.

A booklet is included with the words to all the songs, so you can sing along with Barry and his friends. As you read through the booklet and the cover note, you will see how very proud Barry is of this very special album, the concept and title of which first came to him in a dream. And what a fantastic collection of music it is!

A fine album for a quiet night and a glass of wine, with that special someone. Mmmmm.

4 out of 5 stars Don't listen to what others say, this album is great.......2006-08-21

Slick production leads to Kim's most 80s-ish album. Don't let that scare you--"You Make My Heart Beat Faster" is full of heat and passion, and "Universal Song" is an emotional, intelligent anthem. Single "Invisible Hands" has one of the most crazy 80s bass lines I can think of! Produced by Keith Olsen (who did some work on Stevie Nicks "Rock A Little")--this is more lighthearted than some of Kim's other album. I hear some people knock this record. Tell 'em to shut up. The songs are great and the 80s still rock.

5 out of 5 stars Flashdance ballad - Grammy winner!.......2005-03-22

Album originally released with 10 tracks. This Cd includes 3 bonus track, including "Invitation To Dance" (from "That's Dancin'!" soundtrack).

Lyric sheet / booklet is no enclosed.

4 tracks charted on Billboard Magazine:
    - "Invisible Hands" (Pop Singles #40, The Billboard Hot 100 #40 - 1983, The Billboard Hot 100 #97 - 1984);
    - "You Make My Heart Beat Faster (And That's All That Matters)" (
    Hot Dance Music/Club Play #15, The Billboard Hot 100 #54);
    - "I Pretend" (The Billboard Hot 100 #74 - 1984, Adult Contemporary #9);
    - "Hurricane" (Hot Dance Music/Club Play #16).

Phil Ramone producer invited Kim to write and perform a ballad for a movie in the making titled "Flashdance." She co-wrote with Duane Hitchings and Craig Krampf "I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is." They ended up winnin' a Grammy for this song in 1984.

February 1984 - Kim Carnes was nominated for a Best Pop Rock Performance (female) Grammy Awards , for "Invisible Hands."

5 out of 5 stars Kim Carnes strongest album ever.......2005-02-24

The liner notes for this album and several other reviews posted on-line seem to think that this album was a desperate attempt by EMI to churn out another "Bette Davis Eyes" size hit for Kim. I totally disagree. While I am certain the record company was hoping for another success, I do not think Kim was "pushed" into whatever style of music was hot at the moment. Rather, I feel this album is a continuation of the moody/eerie synth-pop new wave style of the previous 2 Kim Carnes albums.

People think because Kim's first big hit was a duet with Kenny Rogers that she was a country artist gone new wave. How completely wrong. Re-listen to "Bette Davis Eyes" and re-watch the video. The song may have been a huge pop hit, but it was a precursor to many of the new wave bands and videos to come in the decade. The follow up single "Draw of the Cards" and the title song to that album, "Mistaken Identity", are further proof of Kim moving in this dark, new-wave direction. The follow up album, "Voyeur", was also in the same vein with the title song and "Does it Make You Remember". That album and "Cafe Racers" did not suffer because of content, rather they suffered for the same reason that many other artists of the mid-80's suffered. Kim's videos were not played on MTV as she was not deemed cool enough for the network. Other older female artists of the era suffered the same fate such as Olivia Newton-John, Juice Newton, etc. These artists had been huge in the 80-82 era, but were blown off the charts by 83 with MTV and it's penchant for British New Wave and Heavy Metal.

"Cafe Racers" includes some of Kim's best synth pop tunes including "Invisible Hands", "You Make my Heart Beat Faster" and "I Pretend". All were hits in my book, even if not on the charts. The inclusion of "Invitation to Dance" on this CD is greatly appreciated as I have been searching for that song for many years.

Kim furthered her foray into the eerie new wave genre with her next album, "Barking at Airplanes" and her last sizable chart hit , "Crazy in the Night" (#15). Say what you will, but Kim Carnes crafted some of the best new-wave synth pop songs of the decade and deserved much more success.

5 out of 5 stars Before And After review.......2003-12-22

Kim Carnes released Cafe Racers in October 1983

    BEFORE:
Kim Carnes had lost some of her Bette Davis Eyes steam with the Voyeur album, but EMI still knew they had a talent on their hands. She'd recently recorded a track from the Flashdance soundtrack (I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is, included on here)

    AFTER:
Cafe Racers registered with a thud on the pop charts, peaking at a dismal #98 on the album charts. Of the 4 singles taken off the album, only one track even scraped the bottom of the top 40 (Invisible Hands).

Although Cafe Racers was a total flop, the album has become a cult classic. Before the album was reissued in 2001, copies of this cd were selling for over $100 on ebay!

Kim abandons the style from the last 2 albums and moves into the mid-1980's with style. The album is filled with great pop/new wave numbers. EMI pushed and pushed the album, but consumers didn't want it. I think time has been kind to this album, 20 years on, it is very much a product of 1983/1984. But it evokes everything good about the music back then. EMI-America released no less than 4 singles from this album (Invisible Hands, You Make My Heart Beat Faster, I Pretend, Hurricane). None of them made a significant impact on the charts, and none of them made Kim's Gypsy Honeymoon compilation which she personally selected. However, they are all great pop numbers representative of the moment. Invisible Hands is an instant pop classic along the lines of Bette Davis Eyes and it's a shame it only got to #40 because I think the song would've been a smash with the right promotion.

Cafe Racers was the verification that Kim Carnes was never going to duplicate the success of Bette Davis Eyes/Mistaken Identity, but however, people who weren't hellbent caught up on that song knew she had plenty of other great songs. Try it out, it's a real cult classic, and the bonus 12" mixes are well worth it for those into 80's Extended Mixes. 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars "Invitation to Dance" w/Nile Rogers rocks!!!.......2003-09-16

It's great that the bonus here is the only time Kim worked with the excellent producer Nile Rogers on the fun, infectious "Invitation to Dance." I have the original 45 and would love to see the video which was made to promote the film "That's Entertainment - Part 2." I worked with a girl a couple of years ago who had taped it off MTV in the 80s, but I never saw it. I think this album holds together due to Keith's smooth L.A. Europop production. And the songs are mostly good. I don't care for the already heard it duet with John Waite "Hangin' On By A Thread" and I never liked "I'll Be Here Where the Heart Is" that much. But "Young Love" is electrifying synth rock (didn't Rod Stewart also do this?) and so is Martin Page/Brian Fairweather's weird but rockin' "Invisible Hands." I have the video for this and it's good. "Met You At The Wrong Time" is sad and beautiful with touching chord changes. And I love The Cretone's Mark Goldenberg song "Kick In The Heart" which uses car imagery to describe feelings. These songs are all fun to learn and play along with on acoustic piano or synth by the way. I've spent many hours doing just that and enjoying the brilliance of Kim. It's too bad she never got to perform these tunes in concert with a band. She still could, but apparently doesn't like this sound (which could be HOT as a comeback for her right now - - witness the excellent reviews for Duran Duran shows recently!), instead prefering her country-pop songs. KIM - come back and do an 80's HITS tour this summer with a synth-rock band and do some of these rockin' tunes!

4 out of 5 stars Their two best albums together..........2006-11-14

Sad Cafe's recording career included several albums, but they finished it as more or less unknowns to the masses. It's a shame because Misplaced Ideals and Facades, the two albums I'm thoroughly familiar with, are full of well written, well produced, and wonderfully catchy pop rock, as perfect for their time as anything that made it to the radio. Unlike some of their counterparts' music, their songs have the additional element of lyrical depth (sometimes disguised as nonsense - 10cc comes to mind). If you're fortunate enough to find this two-fer CD, enjoy a solid document of intelligent late seventies pop, a rare find on more than one level.

      3 out of 5 stars Should have been a 2 albums on 1 cd.......2005-10-18

Both albums, Facades and Misplaced Ideals could have fit on 1 cd.

Shame because MI is one of the best recordings around. Can easily compare to the best Boz Scaggs and the bands dev1 mentioned ever put out.

      Facades is lacklustre by comparison.

      It gets a 10 for MI, but a 4 for Facades, thus a 3

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

4 out of 5 stars Not Your Average White Bread.......2000-07-01

Groups such as Foreigner, Journey and Boston dominated the charts during the end of the nineteen-seventies. There was hardly any room left for these melodic and lush rockers from Manchester, England - Sad Cafe. But, unlike the formula sound of the previous mentioned bands, Sad Cafe's material is more immediate, relies on the blues, and has a heavy edge - intensely heavy. The band also features a knock-out horn section. This 2fer includes the band's most acclaimed work with A&M: Misplaced Ideas from 1978, and Facades from 1979. Lead singer Paul Young has a tough street-thug voice and does a dead-on Mick Jagger (not that it's a sin).

Misplaced Ideals is the harder sounding, more energetic and blue of the two CDs. It has everything possible going for it: thundering guitar lines (Restless), a killer horn section (Here Come The Clowns), luscious vocal harmonies (Run Home Girl), and a demented Keith Moon drummer (Tony Cresswell). He decimates `Black Rose' and `On With The Show.' The arrangements are intense and dramatic. `I Believe Love Will Survive' opens with a tender melodic piano, sweet harmony vocals, then builds to a grand crescendo of pounding drums and screaming lead guitar. The finale (On With The Show) has a repeated scorching guitar reprise that'll peel wallpaper. Compared to Misplaced Ideas; Foreigner, Journey and Boston are about as fierce as the Carpenters.

Facades isn't on par with Misplaced Ideals - the sound is softer, and the blues are replaced by white bread funk (Guys, what were you thinking?). Still, Facades is a reliable CD with infectious melodies (Angel), soaring vocal harmonies (Everyday), and hooks with hooks (check the break after the lonesome synthesizer introduction on `Nothing To Lose'). Facades has a couple of Average White Bread (I mean Band) throwaways (Strange Little Girl & Get Me Outta' Here). So much for perfection. Get this rocking Sad Cafe 2fer before it's relegated to "sensational out-of-print CD" heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Glad to hear SAD..........2000-02-12

I bought this on a whim, on vinyl ("Misplaced"), seemed a good year for music,1978. I instantly fell for it. An odd mix of soul and Prog/pop elements.10cc comes to mind at times. Eric Stuart, in fact, produced the Facades album. Superb playing and warm arrangements make this a delight. All that's good about '70s music resides here. Fans of Mike And the Mechanics will notice Paul Young's residence here. The fact that both LPs are together is an added plus. GREAT!

4 out of 5 stars Manchester's Sad Cafe' back in the limelight.......1999-03-07

They never really hit the big time, even in England. Everyday Hurts was a minor hit from the lads from Manchester, but even that was fleeting. Nice to see this re-issue of several of their better tracks. The album is actually a compilation of Fanx Ta-ra, Misplaced Ideals and Facades. The lyrics feel a little stilted these days ("looked out of the window what did I see? I saw the devil he was looking at me....") but it does take fans back to those heady days of the Manchester Apollo with its memorable power outages. Shame they didn't include live tracks in this set but we can always hope for the re-issue of the live album. Colin Bodell

5 out of 5 stars A Great Band at their best.......2001-01-01

This album collects the best of Sad Cafe's early UK releases and presents them in a bite-sized chunk for today's audience. The set only covers their RCA releases (A&M in the U.S.) but includes all their big UK hits - Everyday Hurts, My Oh My, La-di-da, Nothing Left Toulouse, Strange Little Girl etc. Unfortunately, the selection misses out their biggest U.S. hit "Run Home Girl" which wasn't a single in the UK but this is available on the two for one release on Renaissance which has the whole of their Facades album and the U.S. version of Misplaced Ideals. With the recent death of their lead vocalist, Paul Young, this is a timely anthology which might inspire RCA to release their "Ole" album which is also one of their finest hours.

      2 out of 5 stars Sad Indeed!.......2000-05-07

It's "greatest hits" packages like this that leave many fans wondering in awe about how songs get chosen for these type of things. Sad Cafe's best moment was "Run Home Girl", a Hall & Oates-styled pop song with cool vocals, nice sax bits and a wailing synth/guitar solo that brought British rock and American soul together in fine fashion. MISPLACED IDEALS and FACADE were the band's two biggest albums (both for A&M) and both are on a 2-disc reissue via Renaissance which is a superb buy and complete value-for-dollar CD. This set, however, is downright SAD. It doesn't contain "Run Home Girl" or any of the really great songs from FACADE. It limps along with a majority of cuts from far inferior albums the band released for RCA when the vim and vinegar were long-gone. Contrary to the nice cover and the full title of this so-called "anthology", this isn't the set you really want of you're a fan of this fine seventies Britpop band.

This CD is derived from the same audio master(s) used for for the Renaissance Records 2CD "Facades/Misplaced Ideals" set.

In fact, the rear jewel case label even states: "Licensed from Renaissance Records".

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Album by Knobloch (not Knoblock).......2006-03-06

This is a magical effort. A great songwriter, and the performance is made complete when Johnson teams up with Fred Knobloch. Knobloch has no peer as a songwriter (He's the creator of George Strait's smash "Meanwhile"). He can make you laugh or cry, or feel good, or take you away through his song to somewhere that seems real to you. He's one of those performers that comes across great live. Kirk Jelly Roll Johnson often plays harmonica with Thom Schuyler,Fred Knobloch & Don Schlitz, who perform together, as well as the solo gigs Knobloch does. Johnson is a player who must be heard to be believed. He is the BEST, and brings out the best in others and in their songs. That's why he has been on hundreds of gold records and is in constant demand as a studio musician, and by songwriters performing live. You will hardly find a successful country singer that hasn't benefitted from Jelly Roll's masterful work. Johnson has been ACM Musician of the year before, and Knobloch has written songs you've heard and love. This deal is a steal! Includes the song "Three Verses", one of my favorites by Fred. Knobloch also has "Let's Eat - 12 Course Dinner" available, with some other friends, including Johnson, and it is great.
Also, check out Jelly Roll Johnson and a Few Close Friends here on Amazon, an album by Kirk Jelly Roll Johnson, with Fred Knobloch singing and playing ("Can I Come Back Home", and "A Lover Is Forever") studio versions on Johnson's CD. It has new original songs featuring a number of songwriters, including Tony Arata (wrote Garth Brook's "The Dance") and Verlon Thompson (who penned the Trisha Yearwood hit "You say You Will"), and other great writers who also play and sing their songs, Suzi Ragsdale, and Malcolm Holcombe, and songs written by Johnson, who plays harmonica throughout all the songs.
A similar album to this is Live at the Bluebird Cafe with Michael Johnson, which is Johnson & Johnson to perfection, barebones. If you can get to the Bluebird Cafe (or any other venue) to see Knobloch and Johnson live, do it. Regardless, buy this CD, or any of those mentioned. You won't regret it!

      4 out of 5 stars A longtime fan.......2001-04-12

I have been a fan of Fred Knobloch since he was playing clubs around Jackson, Mississippi in the late 70s and early 80s. He scored an early hit with "Why not me?" back in the late 70s. Since then he has written a lot of stuff for other artists and taken a stab at mainline country music with the groups SKO and SKB. He takes a slightly different turn with this album. His lyrics and music are able to tug at your heart in a way that is foreign to most artists. His voice has really matured since the old days and seems perfect for the unique type of "folksy blues" music found on this album. Most of his songs defy an easy categorization, but this CD is definately worth a listen. The music on here can be described as soulful, bluesy, folk, etc. However you describe it, Fred is a great storyteller/troubadour. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that Jelly Roll Johnson blows a mean blues harp. I'd have to rank him right up there with Greg "Fingers" Taylor as a harmonica player.
