2 out of 5 stars Not a purchase I can recommend.......2002-03-04

I bought this CD using the following logic:

I like the music from "Dawn of the Dead" (released as "Zombi" in Italy) but the CD will probably be repeative. I was EXTREMELY pleased with the selections on the first entry in the DRG Goblin anthology/retrospective series, so I'd probably be content with this one, too.

I'm sorry to say that I was wrong. The first disc in the series really DID contain the very best of Goblin's film music. Most of the selections here probably did just fine as support pieces for the movies they were created for, but as independent works they just aren't all that interesting.

The "Buio Omega" cuts are drab--think Jean-Michele Jarre on a bad day--and mostly repeated from the first Goblin disc.

The "Tenebre" remix is cool and rocky in the way the "Zombi" tracks are, and is one of the CDs high points. It's definately one of the better efforts from Gobin. It's a nice revamping of the "Tenebre" theme from the first volume.

The three selections from "Phenomena" are also mostly regrettable; Jennifer is just dull, and the alternate version of the Phenomena theme is a repeat from the first Goblin disc. (A really cool track--very much classic Italian film music and a nice instrumental piece to boot--but it's already been presented in the series!) Sleepwalking is the only worthwhile cut of the trio.

The "Mark the Coakroach" cuts are so-so pieces and I once again think they probably worked in the context of the film, but they come across as weak jazz/rock fuzion pieces here. Not really bad, but not rising above the level of background noise either. (The Dance is the best of the three, but drags on for too long.)

As for what was for me the "main attraction," the Zombi/Dawn of the Dead cuts, they didn't disappoint. I found the two peices I were really looking for--the main title music and the main action music Zaratozom. Unfortunately, they repeated the film's main theme from the first Goblin disc here. So, two out of three tracks I already had... another disappointment.

The "Amo Non Amo" tracks are nice pieces, once again sounding like typical italian film music from the Seventies. They, once again, stand as average Goblin efforts, with "Yell" being the only of the trio that barely manages to rise above background noice status.

I really recommend that you stay away from this disc, unless you're the world's biggest Goblin fan who must own EVERYTHING! It really isn't a good value for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Another Fine Goblin Collection But With More Repetition.......2001-03-26

For those of you who are planning to build your Goblin collection around the four volume DRG Records series (which I did), it can get kinda frustrating with the repeated tracks on some of the CDs. On this the third volume, the first two tracks from Buio Omega are repeated from The Goblin Collection. So are Phenomena (from Phenomena, which is an alternate version, not the album version) and L'alba Dei Morti Viventi (from Zombi). The Tenebre Remix doesn't differ that greatly from the classic title track, either(that might be a good thing). Still, it's another fine collection here, with some rare tracks from the film Amo Non Amo (which, when released in the states, were replaced by Burt Bacharach songs, sheesh!!!!!!!) being the main reason why I bought this CD. It's definitely worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite.......2000-05-04

This CD does not come close to the Zombi anniversary CD, as this only has three tracks from the Dawn of the Dead Soundtrack, but it is a good starter. I had this CD before the Dawn CD, so it was nice to at least have a few good Dawn songs before my Zombi CD arrived. Other tracks are good, but not as memorable as classic Dawn tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive soundtrack music.......1999-10-14

Goblin is an always-excellent Italian band most noted for their film scores. This, DRG's third compilation, would stand better as part of a larger set rather than on its own. While the music contained herein is for the most part very good, it only offers a few glimpses of the many sounds Goblin offered in over a decade of work. There's not a lot of consistancy here in this compilation, but nevertheless it is all uniquely fascinating progressive rock/electronic soundtrack music.

1 out of 5 stars THESE GUYS SUCK, REALLY, REALLY SUCK.......1999-05-22

If I could have given less than 1 star to this I would have. When I first heard them in "Dawn of the Dead" I thought they were a preprogramed track on a keyboard. If you listen to this album, your ears will begin to bleed, your brain will leak out your nose, and may god have mercy on your soul.

    Album Description

The extraordinary two-piece ZOMBI has reappeared with Surface To Air, the long-awaited follow-up to its' acclaimed debut Cosmos. Surface To Air teems with the stirring, trance-inducing deluges of rhythm and sound the duo is renowned for. Swelling waves of melodic synth ride atop a broad bass and drum foundation. Sequences of repetition roll, build, and unfold with the measured patience of master artisans. Less an album than a moving, breathing mass of symphonic sound; Surface To Air creates boundless moving pictures that are nothing short of breathtaking.

4 out of 5 stars Better than "Cosmos".......2006-12-15

It took me awhile to really appreciate these guys repetitive nature, combining the synth and heavy bass and drums. When I first heard Zombi at a show they completly transfixed me with what they were doing. Here was Yes without the ridiculous wanking and Rush without Geddy's voice and Lifeson's overplaying. The music from that night is on "Surface to Air", not "Cosmos". That is why this album is important to me. I have "Cosmos" also, but to me, this album has more texture. It is a more interesting ride than "Cosmos". This is a good album. But it is not for everyone. For me, its great.

4 out of 5 stars A Bit Derivative, But Fun.......2006-11-28

I've seen this complaint/compliment throw around regarding this band: they sound too much like (insert band name here) from the 70's, or such-and-such horror soundtrack, etc. Certainly, this group Zombi is nothing astoundingly original, but their sound is a loving and exacting tribute, if nothing else, to the most creative and inspired music of the 70's and even 80's.

The band consists of two musicians (I won't go into names or minute details), who between the two of them play synthesizers, bass guitar and drums. As far as comparisons goes, this music is most similar to many current groups which were most prolific and interesting in their heyday: Tangerine Dream, Rush, Genesis, and others. One of the groups biggest influences, however, is the Italian group Goblin, who most famously created soundtracks for directors Dario Argento and George Romero (Zombi is the Italian name for the classic movie/soundtrack Dawn of the Dead).

I hate to critique music these days, but I want to end with this: it's nothing that will shake the foundations of the world, but Zombi's music is exciting, adventurous, and fun. The drums are amongst the best I've heard in my rather brief but music-absorbed life, and the synthesizers are pure vintage 70's Moog and likewise. Tracks 2 & 3 are my favorites - they have simple, synth & sequencer driven riffs with tons of layering and interplay from the drums and bass. The rhythms are rather static, but they build up to incredible heights. It's hard to describe, as you can see, but the results are fantastic. Check it out!

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2006-08-24

As to Paul Menderczuck's statement "people did not use synthesizers in the '70's..." I say HA. Let's see, there's Weather Report's output, Pink Floyd, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tangerine Dream, Stevie Wonder, and hell, even Elton John! Oh yeah, "Switched On Bach" is ENTIRELY synthesizer (oh wait, that came out in 1968! I guess that WASN't in the 70's!). Then of course the synth solo on "Lucky Man" (damn! 1969!) "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" (1969 again!) and... oh well You get the Idea. Also the mention of "Assault on Precinct 13" coming out "...WAY before Genesis". Double HA. Carpenter's movie came out in 1976, (oh wait.. people didn't use synths in the '70's...) whereas Genesis' FIRST record "From Genesis To Revelation" came out in 1969. Sorry to (now affecting the creepy accent of the ghost waiter from "The Shining") CORRECT you Mr. Menderczuck, but clearly you ARE mistaken. Oh, wait I was writing a review of the Zombi record...

Not bad, though the influences are apparent(Duh). I guess they're "post" post-modern (a band that plays songs in the style of specific movie soundtracks by other specific bands?!).
I'd still recommend the old school soundtracts by Tangerine Dream, Goblin, and Wendy Carlos.

4 out of 5 stars This is cool music to dance and LIVE to!.......2006-07-21

These guys are great. I like the classic 80's synth sound.

It's so funny to see these reviews where people say they sound like Genesis, Pink Floyd or Yes. Ha! This sounds nothing like Owner of a Lonely Heart, Learning to Fly, or Invisible Touch. This is cool indie synth music, from the dawn of synthesizer technology, in the 1980's.

It says in the "from the artist" section that they sound like Genesis. Well, these guys don't know what they really sound like. They sound like 80's horror film movies. Assult on Precinct 13 and the like, which was WAY before Genesis.

Also, they are not going for some 70's rock sound. People did not use synthesizers in the 70's. They used organs and pianos and played church music rock. Boring! The 80's are so kewl! These guys don't sound like Iron Butterfly or Led Zepplin. That is 70's music.

Soundscapes and repetition ARE modern music. No one wants to hear some hippy noodling. We want the clean lines of modernity, not some musical doilies. Zombi is a nice addition to my collection of downbeat electronica.

The musicians in Zombi are so great, they could do anything they want. But they hold back, because no one wants to hear the excesses of classic rock. Indie rock's new motto is "less is more". It's true, especially if you look kewl.

I love electronica and 80's music. These guys are so great. They are almost as cool as Harold Faltermyer. Please make another album fast. I know it must take eons to come up with this stuff, but maybe you can take some more "go-fast" and make it so! This is the music of Piccard's Star Trek!

5 out of 5 stars Great band! Amazing!.......2006-07-17

Lynn Belvedere was somewhat negative in her review; often comparing this band to Yes and Genesis. Those two bands are not what Zombi are going for! Sit down and watch "Escape From New York" or "Dawn Of The Dead (1978)" and you'll see exactly what this band is going for. You will also find that this band not only captures it perfectly, but also adds their own little touch to it.

I remember years back when I bought the "Zombi" LP by Goblin, I thought I'd never find another album (let alone BAND) that sounded anything like that. Thankfully Zombi has come along.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Goblin Soundtrack Gets Refurbished.......2006-05-23

I reviewed this CD awhile back, so I won't go into details about the songs on this CD. However, as happy as I was when I purchased the 1998 CD, I was greatly disappointed with the sound quality, which sounded like it was recorded on gauze tape. Apparently, someone at Cinevox felt the same way, for in late 2005/early 2006 Zombi was reissued on their "Gold Tracks" subsidiary (the spine reads CD MDF 606). Is the Gold Tracks reissue worth the additional investment? Absolutely! The remastering breathes new life into the recordings and with the additional volume and clarity, the bonus tracks certainly stand on their own.

The downside? Unfortunately, Cinevox managed to omit the beginning "pickup" notes on Safari, Torte in faccia, and Tirassegno. Casual listeners will probably not notice, but to the people who grew up with the album it's a little bothersome. Also, the last track, Zombi (the living dead's voice!); on the 1998 reissue it's in mono. Here, it's given a stereo "bounce" with a half-second delay on the right channel: it's still an awful track.

The packaging is a digipak-foldout of the original 1978 album release cover with a MUCH better design than the 1998 CD. It comes with an eight-page booklet with more photos but with the same synopsis.

Overall, a fantastic soundtrack gets a desperately needed makeover. I give the 2006 release 4.5 stars out of five. Buy it!

    Album Description

"Analog synthesizer-based horror soundscapes...uneasy listening for the intelligent headbanger" - PULP

Pittsburgh, PA's ZOMBI create boundless, leering soundscapes inspired by filmmakers such as Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci and the musical scores of John Carpenter and GOBLIN. The duo weave an ever-changing series of rich, decaying analog synth waves through an organic, driving bass and drum foundation, creating chilling moods and atmospheres. ZOMBI's Relapse Records / Release Entertainment debut Cosmos is a powerful work of eerie, relentless rhythms and futuristic score that shares as much headspace with the late-night sci-fi explorer as the space rock adventurer.

NICE. I found out about these guys while searching for the Goblin Zombi soundtrack because I like the whole gloomy synth sound and then I found out there was a band DEDICATED to creating music inpired by this unique 'Goblin formula'...Let me just say I can't wait for there next release! Very chill music that ironically puts you on the edge...Also ironic; they're signed to Relapse Records!?

    ZOMBI-Cosmos (CD By Relapse Entertainment)
Zombi are a duo that is inspired by horror movie scores from the eighties--I've got to say though you couldn't tell from this album. It is an instrumental journey through the voids of space, hence the name of the album: Cosmos. The album features seven tracks of spacey, synth-based compositions produced with vintage synthesizers, drums and electric bass. Clearly with this album, Zombi gives the listener the feeling of a weightless adventure through uncharted space, perfectly putting to score our sense of awe at the silent, yet majestic wonders one may see when free of the atmospheric confines of our terra firma. Do yourself a favor and seek it out; you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars How Bout A Little Music? Might Cover The Noise We Make.......2005-07-20

Zombi's Cosmos is very welcome on the cd rack. It's great to see someone doing this style of music, which really isn't all that popular. I mean, it really doesn't fit into any popular genre. It's not metal, not industrial, and I can't see it being played at a rave, yet it's pretty much all synth. The comparisons to Goblin are very accurate. There's also some John Carpenter thrown in there, especially when you hit track 4. That's not saying they're a total Goblin clone, but even if they were, would that be so bad? There aren't many bands around doing this type of stuff, ya know, and Goblin have pretty much hung it up. Zombi, like Pink Floyd, can be very energetic or suprisingly soothing depending on your mood at the time. It's a very fuzzy, dancey, trancey, take off your pants-y kind of sound. Indeed it conjures up images of Romeroland. Upon listening to this cd my wife even said, "This sounds like it belongs in one of your zombie movies". So, there you have it. Do you like Goblin? You like zombie films and/or Italian horror cinema? Well, a new Goblin album seems unlikely, but at least we have folks like Zombi to carry that torch. Don't be a schmuck, buy it.

i first heard of these guys 'cause they toured with my friends band (Dura Mater) and so i went to check them out. i knew they were influenced by Goblin, and that's about it. well, let me say these two blew me away. i expected an entertaining gig, but little did i know that within minutes of their opening song, my heart would be in my gut...you know when you see a live act, and in that moment you get chills and butterflies and all that? well yeah, they kick a$$!! i bought the cd right away and listen to it on a regular basis. don't think twice, if you like italian horror, goblin, morricone, fabio frizzi etc. GET THIS ALBUM!!! you won't be let down! i was even fortunate enoughto chill with these guys and play nintendo, they're great guys doing great work that most people don't have the balls to approach....

    5 out of 5 stars Zombi - "Cosmos".......2004-08-09

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two musicians that were inspired by big names in the horror industry such as Argento, Fulci and Carpenter would sound like if they made some music? Well my friends let me introduce you to the result of such an interesting query - I present you with ZOMBI!

ZOMBIE is a new team of musicians who are going to rock the socks off of the music/film industry. Steve Moore and A.E Paterra, hail from Pittsburgh, PA - home to George Romero's Dead movies and the birthplace of brain eating, slow moving zombies. Being inspired by the late 70's early 80's horror greats, these two gents have the horror bug so bad, it is only fitting that they name their group "Zombi".

Zombi's current Debut, Cosmos, will be available for purchase in the US Aug 3 and in Europe Aug 23. Might I say, you HAVE to grab a copy! These boys aren't playing around! They have put 210% into this release, and it shows! Teetering on the line of horror/sci-fi sound, this is the ear candy that I have been searching out for oh so long. If you are a fan of Pink Floyd's pre - Dark Side Of The Moon or original 70's prog rock this CD is going to bring life to your blackened heart, and bring back colorful flashbacks only you can appreciate. Zombi takes you on a roller coaster ride that will bring your emotions in check and leave you wondering if you are being abducted by aliens, watching a horrifying sacrifice, or walking aimlessly with a heard of Zombies.

This is seamless, crisp, clean cutting synth and percussion sound that the music world has been void of for some time now. There are no lyrics to deter from your listening enjoyment, no samples repeating themselves; just good pure musicians busting their ass to give you their soul and allowing you to make the story up as you go along.

This Debut CD gets 5 stars from me! No one else would have been able to pull off this resurgence of 70's style prog rock and turn it into a beautiful piece of musical ear candy as Zombi has. You don't need brains to agree with me on this one. Go NOW and pre-order a copy for yourself and a friend. The price is right, and it will be the best damn money you have spent on a CD in a long while!

    Side note:
This love for horror that they have running through their veins has come full circle - Zombi has scored the feature length horror film "Home Sick" staring our buddy Bill Mosley as well as a few other notables. The soundtrack for this flick should be out following the release of this flick in fall of 2004 - so keep your eyes peeled!

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars Frizzi's finest!.......2005-09-01

Well that's what I think, at least. This disc contains Fabio Frizzi's score for the Lucio Fulci classics Zombi 2 (known as plain old Zombie in the US), upon which Frizzi collaborated with Giorgio Cascio, and Un Gatto Nel Cervello (available on DVD as Cat in the Brain). Both scores are fine examples of the kind of music one will hear in low budget Italian horror films. Before getting this CD I had never heard the Cat in the Brain score, but it is a fine counter to what I consider one of my all time favorite Italian horror film scores, Zombi 2. I don't think that there is a Fulci fan out there that would not want to have this music to listen to at one point or another. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars The ultimate Zombi 2 soundtrack.......1999-07-10

At last, after so much fooling around, someone has decided to release a well-researched and wonderfully mastered soundtrack to these massively under-estimated films. Of course, 'Il Gatto Nel Cervello' was made in 1988, and in my opinion, is nowhere near as good as 'Zombi 2', but it still has interesting and haunting music.

I was really attracted to this CD because of the superb presentation of the 'Zombi 2' music. I already own several CDs of this music (including Blackest Heart's Cannibal Ferox/Zombie double album), and I can easily say that this is by far the most complete collection of Fabio Frizzi's and Georgio Tucci's score. Even the wonderful 'Menard's Duty' track, sadly absent from every other soundtrack in its complete version, is included here in its entirety (listed here as sequence '5').

The bottom line? Well, if you're a fan of this film, and let's face it, if you're bothering to read this then you must be, then I strongly urge you to buy this CD. Quite simply, you will NOT find a more complete and beautiful sounding presentation of the score anywhere. The reason I did not vote '5' stars is simply because I'm not a huge fan of the 'Il Gatto Nel Cervello' score. Although, as previously stated, it's still unmistakably Frizzi!

          An absolute must!
