5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Souvenir to Remember a Spectacular Performance!.......2003-10-30

Having been fortunate to have seen the English National Opera's production in 1988 of "Orpheus" with Wilson and Pountney's outrageously naughty English text, this highlight CD serves as an audio souvenir. Too bad the ENO didn't have the foresight to film the production-would have made a great DVD. The CD booklet does have a few photos of the sets designed by Gerald Scarfe (who also designed Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album artwork) so you get a taste, combined with the CD selections, of what the production was like.

Offenbach is great anyhow, but this recording is riotous. The translation into English is first-rate, really funny stuff, and the singing is pretty good, too. Very worthwhile.

The rewritten lyrics, in English, are some of the wittiest and wicked in operetta. Wilson and Pountney have recaptured the spirit of naughtiness, not a small accomplishment in our licentious times. Though delighted to have the highlights, I wished a CD set or video of the full production were available.

This is part of a multi-CD project that was released some years ago to chronicle the history of Belgium martial music from the 1830s to the present. Most of the selections are regimental works belonging to a time when Belgium maintained a much larger army than today! The band is surpurb and produces a solid, formidable sound. These Belgium marches have a certain French quality about them, especially in the instrumentation which sports large amounts of bugles, trumpets and drums. The liner notes are informative, but a bit badly translated at times. A worthy addition to any serious march collectors library. Collect the other CDs in the series which are marches for the Belgium Artillery and Infantry.

Anyone who is a march enthusiast should quickly lap this one up! Every march on this disc is a winner - thundering, exciting and unforgettable performances. The marches by Prevost are especially memorable and deserve to be heard often. The band has power, precision, and obviously enjoys sinking their teeth into these unusual marches. Get the wife and kids and cats out! You will need to straighten all the pictures in the house after this one! Five stars!!!

    This is one of those very special CD’s that give you music you’ve always wished for but never heard. Emile Simon is one of those unique individuals who every once in awhile cross the stage of life to give us something very rare – a picture of the world in a light we all feel, understand, appreciate yet never quite see. His music is like his life has been, full of happiness, sadness, truth and vision. In his life, he has gained international recognition as an author and poet. When he first met his wife, however, they shared the love of music and at that time he began to compose. Being a child protégé of the violin at a very young age, his life was brutally interrupted by WWII and never again did he play the violin. However, his love of music never changed and when he met his wife, June Simon, a coloratura soprano, he began to compose music for her. Unfortunately, she was stricken with an illness which took her voice from her and Emile stopped composing. Just over! a year ago, he and his wife were in a recording studio helping a friend when inadvertently June was asked to sing a few lines only to discover that her voice had returned. From then on, Emile has been giving us beautiful music: songs and instrumentals we will cherish now and in the future to come.
