    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Floyd's greatest live album gets Japanese LP treatment.......2006-03-24

Pink Floyd's Pulse was released in June of 1995.
The album was recorded on the European leg of Pink Floyd's 1994 world tour to support The Division Bell album.
The reason for the Pulse album and video was at the end of the Canadian/North American leg of the tour(I saw them in Foxboro, MA in May of 1994 with 55,000 fans embracing them on one of their three nights sold out nights in Mass), they decided to resurrect something they had not done since their 1975 US Tour, Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.
Pulse was superbly produced by guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour and longtime engineer James Guthrie whom also engineered and mixed the album. Some songs had solos dubbed in from other shows because either the playing was awful or the solo came in a bar late. Hence, the album was not re-recorded in the studio unlike many live albums.
The first disc is a potpourri of material of classic Floyd tracks like Astronomy Domine, Hey You, Shine on You Crazy Diamond(pts. 1-5, 7), Hey You and a stellar Another Brick in the Wall(pt.2) and post-Waters material Learning to Fly, Sorrow, Keep Talking, Coming Back to Life, What Do You Want From Me and High Hopes.
The second disc is the complete Dark Side album in its entirety plus encores of Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell. Except for the jam in the middle of Money, the whole of Dark Side of the Moon sounds just like the studio LP, but almost better in some cases like Time, The Great Gig in the Sky(sorry but Sam Brown did the first part way better than Clare Torry IMHO) and Us and Them. The rest is superb as well.
The PULSE album originally came packaged with a blinking light on the spine of the CD artwork. Also, the Pulse album was an instant smash hitting #1 in both the US and UK and selling over three million in the US alone immediately.
In 2005, Sony Japan re-released it with packaging like the original 4-LP box set featuring all of the artwork, a book and picture labels like the original record.
Sales aside, this is the best live album ever as the songs are SUPERB and the performances are top-notch!!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Pulse Revisited.......2005-12-22

This box set is a must have for any Pink Floyd fan. It's a bit pricey but you get your money's worth since it's a Japanese import with all the good trimmings to boot. High quality remastered version of a classic PF live concert (it goes well with "Delicate Sound Of Thunder"). They're better off being a trio. Live with it, people! Enough of the rantings! If you're not happy with it, don't buy!

1 out of 5 stars Nothing new under the sun.......2005-09-29

When was the last time since Pink Floyd made a decent, original album? Mr. Gilmour and his band think we are boredom-proof. The technical precision of their performances is good as ever, but since Roger Waters left, it's all the same: technically perfect performances, but without any solid contribution to the mystic of the band. The lyrics of the new songs really suck and a re an insult to the depht achieved in previous years. I think that if they don't have anything new to say, there are better off silent. The graphic artwort of the albums can be superb, but that doesn't improve the band's musical content. It is the same legacy of Mr. Waters in a different fancy package. What's next? Pink Floyd unplugged?

5 out of 5 stars Life is, or Should be, Only Rock and Roll.......2006-06-11

This records opens with the super rocker "If You Can Rock Me" and in it Mick sings, "If you can't rock me, than somebody will." Oh yeah, he ain't looking for no wedding cake, the man just wants to rock and he does it on this record. This is Mick Taylor's final record with the Greatest Group on Earth and he really goes out in style. In fact both he and his future replacement, Ron Wood, both play on the title song. I just love "Till the Next Goodbye," a song that sends chills up my spine every time I hear it. I jump up and groove (can you still say that?) every time "Dance Little Sister," comes out of my speakers. "Time Waits for No One," is sort of my husband's theme song. He's a writer and this song just seems to get his fingers tap, tap, tapping on those keys. I am very lucky, because I've got a guy who can rock me, so I don't have to find anybody else. Thank God for that, because life is, or should be, only rock and roll, after all.

5 out of 5 stars St. Matt? None better than this one.......2007-03-30

Much to my horror, I inadverdently left this recording's CDs in an airplane back seat pocket a couple of years ago. I had enjoyed a mini-retreat listening to this melifluous performance of Bach's Magnificent St. Matthew Passion by the Collegium of Japan, and was eager to continue listing at home. No problem, I thought. I'll buck up and buy another copy. Lo, and behold, none was available, even on Amazon.com! Herrweghe's recording showed up on a search, however. Good. I smiled. I respect his work and have heard his group on numerous recordings and in live concerts. Surely it would be top drawer. I was surprisingly disappointed in it. Nonetheless, I continued to hope that someday I'd get hold of Masusaka's. Voila! Here it is bundled with the St. John Passion (which I don't need, but will be curious to hear).

What does Japan Collegium do that is so remarkable? Like any musical performance, it is the synergy of countless nuances and subtleties of expression that captivate Bach's rhetorical and musical message. The soloists and period instrumentalists seem to have a clear grasp of German Lutheran piety and draw the listner in to its cosmos. It is a technically flawless rendering, free of anxious tempi and full of luscious sonorities. I am thrilled to be ordering it again, and highly recommend it.

This Box Set brings together Two of Bach's finest works. The St, John Passion and the St. Matthew Passion and at a wonderful price. These performances by the Bach Collegium Japan under Masaaki Suzuki are some of his best performances of Bach. Gerd Turk especially delivers some moving and beautiful singing. The other soloists aquit themselves quite well. If you own any of the recordings of the Suziki, BCJ Bach Cantata series this
box set is a must have. The BIS label as usual delivers excellent sound. This set is a bargin considering that a good recording of the St. Matthew
Passon can run you at least $40 - $50. Highly Recommended.

          5 out of 5 stars A welcomed departure........1999-06-02

This album is Hurricane #1's true debut. While the band did release an LP in '97, it was written before the band had even met for the first time, which they did in the studio to record those songs. Be it a debut or sophomore album, Only the Strongest Will Survive is quite an achievement. It seems as if Hurricane #1 has discovered their own respective place in music, instead of blindly pumping out Britpop. Indeed, this is a much more pointed and personal album, as Andy Bell's songwriting takes a turn toward the profound. Alex Lowe makes a contribution as well, offering the slow-building anthem "What Do I Know?" The instrumentation shows signs of progression as well, as more of the beats are hip-hop infused. The bass can get very funky at times, like on "Twilight World." Now, on to the songs...

The first attention grabber is "The Greatest High," which is very deceivingly titled. The song contains more angst than optimism, but is quite anthemic nonetheless. However they did the vocals sure sound cool...

"Remote Control" seems to focus its criticism towards all those who are capable of making a decision without considering the consequences. I guess it helps that it flows into the ear easily, too.

"The Price That We Pay" is the album's acoustic, and definitely stands out. Gotta love the lyric "And the time that we stole in Garden of Eden was worth the price that we pay/ no regrets, no revivals, no tears/ it's a brand new day."

The centerpiece of the album is the title track, which begins with strings very similar to those of Whatever by Oasis. However, after the strings fade out, the hip-hop beat moves in, which is actually quite confusing. It's a great song about how it can be easier to tolerate pain than it can be to see pleasure disappear.

"Afterhours" is the most melancholy of the songs, with backing vocals by Andy's wife Idha. This song, and maybe "Come Alive," show that Andy hasn't yet forgotten what Ride was all about.

The other songs (and there are a lot of them) are all quite good, these are just some of the highlights. It's a really good album, it's a shame that they don't get any press.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Escaflowne.......2006-04-27

If I had to buy one CD to define the series of Escaflowne, this would be it. The music for Escaflowne is a rare wonder, and for twenty-six episodes, it defies the average anime soundtrack. It is superior to even most movie soundtracks. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Even if you don't like the series (or how it ended XD) you have to admit that the music is beautiful. Superb.

4 out of 5 stars Not the best of Escaflowne.......2005-07-22

First of all I would like to say that Escaflowne features what I believe is the greatest soundtrack ever (TV or Film). The epic sci-fi fantasy soundtrack features sweeping orchestra work the likes of which many will doubtless be familiar from their experience with films like Star Wars. In my opinion the music from Escaflowne manages to one-up said soundtracks, becoming a masterpiece of musical arrangement that not only transcends anime, but TV and sci-fi fantasy as well. My favorite piece of music is Revenge from the third Escaflowne soundtrack.

If like most people who watched Escaflowne, you loved the music, doubtless you want to buy at least one of the soundtracks so that you can experience the music in all of its glory. You may however, be wondering where to start. This soundtrack features music the three other soundtracks, as well as music which is not featured on any of the others.

The first piece of music is an alternate and slightly longer than television size version of the opening song from the show No Need to Promise. It's nice and interesting, but no match for the full version featured on the first soundtrack.
The second track is an alternate version of Vision of Escaflowne, which I believe is played on the final episode of the series. The third track Memory of Fanelia is the string instrument version of Fanelia from the second soundtrack, and is only featured in this cd. This music is played in the episode where Van returns to the destroyed Fanelia to meet with his brother, and is a simply exquisite piece of music that led to many an evening of me whistling that tune as I worked.

The fourth track Dance of Curse is played at the beginning and end of the series during the most dramatic moments and largely recalls Duel of the Fates from the new Star Wars trilogy, except of course that I happen to like it better. This track is also featured in soundtrack one. The fifth track Zaibach is a piece that grows on you. It is the perfect piece of music for a scene of total destruction and shocking brutality, as it is used in the series for the invasion of Fanelia and subsequent attacks by lord Dilandau. This track is also only found on this soundtrack.

Track six, Flying Dragon, is the music played when Escaflowne transforms into a dragon and flies through the air. It is highly reminiscent of E.T., but it's still an awesome piece of music. Track seven, Cradle Song, is also featured on the second soundtrack and is a beautiful sad piece played during flashbacks throughout the series. Track eight is a vocal song played when Hitomi starts to think about the life she left back on earth.

Track nine, Bird Cage, is of the most dramatic and searing of the pieces to be found in the show, and plays when (if I'm not mistaken) Hitomi, Van, and Allen are captured by Zaibach and kept in a giant bird cage. Track ten is one of the best pieces in the entire series. Chain is the fantastic piece of music that plays in the episode where Faulkin uses the Fate Alteration Engine to make Hitomi and Allen fall in love instead of Van and Hitomi. It is a huge part of that episode, and one greatest just-plain-cool pieces of music I have ever heard. Why this piece of music is only featured on this soundtrack I will never know.

Track eleven Epistle is played when the luck soldiers attack and during various other attacks through the series. It starts out good and just gets better. It is also featured on the third soundtrack. Track twelve is a forgettable piece of J-Pop called Perfect World. Track thirteen Blaze is splendid piece of mood music, but not as good as some of the other music featured on the soundtrack (also found on the third soundtrack). Track fourteen Hitomi Theme is definitely one of the best pieces on this soundtrack (also found on soundtrack two) and plays during some of the moments when Hitomi is dreaming about what her life used to be like back home on earth. Simply beautiful.

Track fifteen Angel (soundtrack one also) is not only one of the best pieces on this soundtrack, but of the best in the entire series. It plays during important flashbacks, ceremonies, ect., and is the kind of music you wouldn't be embarrassed to have play at your wedding. In fact this piece of music is so beautiful you may find yourself listening to it over and over again (on a side note this piece of music always makes me think of the happiest moments of my life). Track sixteen is a little lullaby type song in super-cute Japaneses. Throwaway track.

Track seventeen Arcadia is a piece of music so sad, and so heartbreaking (it plays mostly when death is remembered, or you are finding out just how terrible a past and future Faulkin is having to live under) that it made me buy the soundtrack just for itself. This piece of music is absolutely awesome in the beginning, and then goes into an opera piece (which is not bad, but not as good as the beginning). They are almost two pieces though so I don't count that as a disadvantage. This piece is also featured in soundtrack three.

Track eighteen is probably the best piece of pop music in the entire series (well, except for the opening song). This song is played when Hitomi gets back to earth and relives the entire day over again, realizing how flawed her perspective was and how childish she had been acting. A really great song sung in Japanese. Very good. Track nineteen, Mystic Eyes, is one of those pieces that you will either love or hate. Personally I think it clashes terribly with the rest of the music in the show. For those who care it is the TV Edit, not the full version.

Track twenty The Story of Escaflowne, is a very good reason to buy this cd. The final piece of music in the entire series, played only at the very end of the final episode, is one of the greatest ending themes you will ever hear. Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful. If you loved this music from the TV show then you have to buy this cd, because it is the only place you will find it.

There is a tremendous amount of variety in the music in Escaflowne, but the show is best when it uses the rousing orchestral themes. The best pieces of music in the entire series are probably Chain, The Story of Escaflowne, Dance of Curse, Gloria, Wings, and Revenge. Gloria is the piece played at the royal wedding, and also when Van comes home to Fanelia after slaying a dragon in the second episode. Wings is an absolutely FANTASTIC combination of Flying Dragon, Angel, and other music. It is played when Van is rescued from the flying fortress, and features a grander, bigger, better rendition of Angel at the very end that is so beautiful it's hard to describe. Revenge is THE theme of the show (if you ask me). Played at the very end of the show when everything comes to a showdown, it starts out like an action scene from Star Wars, then swiftly transitions into a sorrowful march rendition of the Escaflowne theme, and then picks up momentum until it climaxes like the end of the Firebird Suite (good old Stravinsky).

If you want the best soundtrack to start off on the music from this series, get the first soundtrack which features Dance of Curse, Flying Dragon, Escaflowne (awesome), Angel, Ne Zu Mi (Merle's theme {another awesome!}, Wings (so awesome is defies description!), and Gloria (repeat last parenthetical statement). If you want the single best piece of music get the third soundtrack (REVENGE!!!!!). It's more of a mixed bag but has a couple of truly awesome pieces. Get the second track last because it has the least amount of really great music. Get the Lovers Only soundtrack if you want a specific piece not found on the other soundtracks or want to have everything.

5 out of 5 stars If you are only going to buy one Escaflowne CD.......2005-06-17

A lovely overview of some of the best music from this lovely anime. The hidden gem on this CD is Kaze ga Fuku Hi (The Days the Wind Blows). This song dosn't stand out while you are watching, but like many of Yoko's songs it is better as a complete number. That song alone is easaly worth what I paid for the CD and the rest of the music is worth having too.

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful OST.......2004-04-11

When I was first introduced to the series "Tenkuu no Escaflowne" (Vision of Escaflowne) several years ago, one of the things that immediately drew me in was the incredible music. I tire of soundtracks very quickly, normally - but it's been about 4 years now, and I can still put my Lovers Only CD on repeat for hours. It's wonderful background music for creative activities such as writing, drawing, painting, or just relaxing.

Unlike a great deal of soundtrack music, the Escaflowne songs and instrumentals are, for the most part, very non-intrusive. They mesh well with a variety of moods and provide everything from upbeat, catchy stuff to sorrowful and soulful pieces that will really move you. You don't need to be a fan of the series to enjoy the music, either.

This particular OST is my favorite of the five Escaflowne OSTs that I own; it takes many of the best pieces from the series and puts them all on one CD. It also includes one of the most beautiful and addictive musical pieces from Escaflowne, the ominous "Chain" - which is absent from other Esca OSTs. (This is the background piece heard playing during the scene where Folken and Eriya alter Fate, among other scenes.)

5 out of 5 stars Best Escaflowne OST.......2003-05-20

I own all the Escaflowne OSTs and I'd have to say this is the best one. The music of Yoko Kanno and Hajime Mizoguchi is just wonderful, smooth and flowing and conveys all emotions from the hopeful, ethereal "Angel" to the dark, ominous "Blaze."

Maaya Sakamoto's songs on this track are just as lovely, especially "Kaze ga fuku hi" (Track 18) which is still my all-time favorite song after 5 years of owning the CD. This track is has deep, soothing bass accompanied by a lovely saxophone and instruments get added in seemlessly as the song goes on...by the time it reaches the climax of the piece, you're shocked by all that's there.

I'd highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes Yoko Kanno, Maaya Sakamoto, symphonic/choral music, or anime.
