Co-produced, compiled and sequenced by Jesse Colin Young and David Bean, THE VERY BEST OF JESSE COLIN YOUNG is a comprehensive 2-cd celebration of Young's phenomenal four-decade career.

Disc one of this specially-priced 2-cd set represents a sonic history from the very first recording of The Youngbloods done in New York City by Jesse Colin Young's mentor Bobby Scott in 1964, through to the recording of 'Darkness, Darkness' done at Owl Mountain in 1994.

Disc two represents the maverick side of Jesse Colin Young's music, from 1964 to the present, starting with a new song, 'Eyes on the Prize,' a spiritual inspired by the Reverend Gary Davis.

THE VERY BEST OF JESSE COLIN YOUNG is chock full of special tracks, including 4 Classic Youngbloods tracks (`Get Together', `Sunlight', `Hey Babe', and `Sometimes'), `Four In The Morning' (a live recording of Jesse's first recognized hit, originally performed on Capitol Records' 1964 'Soul Of A City Boy') and NEVER BEFORE RELEASED TRACKS including: A 1998 recording of "Darkness, Darkness' with guitarist Larry Mitchell, `Eyes On The Prize', the radio remix of `Desire', a new vocal and instrumental interpretation of `Lovin' You' and `Sweet Good Times.'

Having listened to the song samples of this album and liking what I'd heard of the Youngbloods, I decided to buy my first Jesse Colin Young solo album. It was every bit as good as I was hoping it'd be. The CD comes with a booklet complete with lyrics to all the songs, as well as a list of all the musicians who played on the album and the instruments they used. Pretty impressive for a CD reissue of an album 30 years old. I was expecting just a one sided paper insert with the album cover on the front.
The music is quite good. There's a lot of guitar, but there's harmonica, flute, clarinet, sax, trombone, violin, and piano as well, just to kind of give you an idea what the music sounds like. While it does sound like early 70's singer/songwriter rock music, the album definitely still holds up well after 30 years.
I've listened to it four times since the mailman brought it yesterday. It's not very long, of course, as most vinyl albums weren't, but what is there is outstanding. I'll definitely be getting more of his CDs.

I've worn this out in four formats-8 track, cassette, lp and finally cd. This is 70's california pop at it's best. Solid songs, solid rhythm section, a brilliant solist (Jim Rothmeil) perfect piano parts and one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. A little pop, a little jazz, a little country, just a great record.

The highlight is probably the jazzy Ridgetop, Jesse's ode to his Marin County home, followed closely by the title cut (a song about his then 6 year old daughter) and a cajun influenced Lafayette Waltz/Jambalaya

This cd is too sweet not to own it. Get it NOW

This is a great live album, an exciting rock offering with distinct jazz and blues overtones, in places heartfelt, in others sheer exuberant fun. You get the feeling that the band are really enjoying themselves here, and the standard of musicianship is impeccable. This album has very much benefited from tasteful remastering, capturing the bright, warm feel which really makes you wish you'd been at this gig.

is a must for anyone's musical collection. The songs he writes
are straight from the heart pure and natural. His voice is as soothing as can be and his band is outstanding!

Indeed, the "Four in the Morning" on this CD is the version taken from the original Capitol album "Soul of a City Boy." I fell under the spell of this song when it was played by Billy Bass on WMMS in Cleveland in 1969, at a time when I just happened to be taping his program. I added it to my own repertoire, and searched in vain myself for many years for the original album (I still even remember the catalog number: Capitol T2070!).

Capitol did reissue "Soul of a City Boy" briefly on LP sometime in the 70s or 80s, and I got a copy then. The rest of it is rather standard blues fare; there's nothing on it quite as wonderful as "Four in the Morning." Jesse also did a rather ill-advised electric remake of this song on the first Youngbloods album.

I love Jesse's voice; he's a great talent, but to me the rest of his solo stuff pales next to his work with The Youngbloods, and of course, the original "Four in the Morning." Nice to see that it reached someone else too!

4 out of 5 stars Whatever Happened to "Soul of a City Boy?".......2004-01-06

About 40 years ago (could it really be that long ago?) I had a great solo folksinger record by Jesse Colin Young -- his first release -- called "Soul of a City Boy." In a kitchen in North Beach in late 1969 I heard a live radio interview with JCY in which he mentioned this little known album and that he no longer had a copy of it himself. And there I had it... so I called the station! But couldn't get through. What happened? I wound up selling it along with a crate of other 60s classics to a record store owned by some Rastafarians in Providence RI in 1982 or so, and haven't heard JCY sing "Four in the Morning" since. Could this be the same "Four in the Morning" on this "Best of..." CD? If so, it is worth buying for that track alone!

I can't believe nobody's reviewed this yet. This is the most beautiful album Jesse Colin Young's done in a long time. I really liked last year's Walk the Talk, but this is a masterpiece. Okay, it doesn't have that many new JCY songs- Living in Paradise, You are the One, and Angel Mine, all excellent. Aloha E previously appeared only on the Beanbag JCY greatest hits. Two of them, Am I an Island, and Turning Point, appeared on 1992's Making It Real, but this album's versions sound so much better. The instrumentation is a subtle Hawaiian Folk Rock, with acoustic guitar, ukelele, and hand drums dominating. Jesse is such a brilliant guitarist, and gets melodies on his ukelele, an instrument I've only heard used for rhythm before this. The title song, for example, shows that Hawaii is a real place, where people have real problems, poverty. The verse about his unnamed friend's death particularly moved me. Like me, he's reached the age where this happens. If you haven't heard any JCY albums since his 1970's heyday, his voice may surprise you. It's dropped quite a bit, gotten breathy, but he uses what he has very effectively.
