Last man on earth
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
United States Of America
With a name taken from a YES album, this efficient American band mixes the refinement of beautiful piano parts with passionate energy in their music. Their influences include Progressive bands
(YES, MARILLION, NOW) as well as KANSAS or RUSH. The mix of sophistication and energy is reminiscent of DREAM THEATER. Very melodic and accessible music.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
A court jester in folksinger neverland, Loudon Wainwright III is mad and sad as hell, but like the narrator of the song "I'm Not Gonna Cry," he doesn't want to show it. He's upset from losing his mother, from being 53 years old, from new wounds over old scars, and from new losses and old regrets. But Wainwright can't let himself off the hook, and so, using emotional exhibitionism as therapy, he turns his woe into art. In fact, he wrote most of these songs while living in his mother's cottage for 18 months after her passing. As often as not, the poignant moments come not when he's being most confessional, but when he's playing peekaboo--his cunning and wit failing to conceal his pain. Wainwright is funny in the hurt places and hurt in the funny places, and the record is clever, companionable, sweet, and sad. --Henry Cabot Beck
Customer Reviews:
One man, everyman.......2007-01-18
Wainwright taps into the male mind.He is a bit of an everyman. It isn't always pretty but it's always honest. Listen to "Donations": a guy with a few friends, who pleads with one of them to let the others know when he is gone, and leaves instructions for his body parts. It is both sad and funny; not easy to pull off. The first two songs are bookends:he's alone, he is 53, and he nudges into adulthood(finally and acknowledging that ,yes, he may be the one at fault). The title song is next to last and is defiant but resigned. Again, two emotions that are usually at odds but that he weaves together. A few of the songs, like "Graveyard" where he muses on how we all end up there are a bit sophomoric but don't detract from a great album by an evolving artist(although I would still like a few like "East Indian Princess".)
Wainwright's best.......2006-12-29
This is definitely Mr. Wainwright's best album ever.
The music is great and the words to all of the songs are great.
I was surprised to see it further down the list of his bestselling CDs here at amazon.
I strongly recommend it to everyone who has hesitated in the past to buy one of his CDs.
This CD is especially special to the boomers. Don't know how else to word it.
The song where he visits a graveyard is really telling. He sings "I go to the graveyard, but I'll be back again" Great song because we all avoid thinking about the inevitable.
In "Homeless", he sings about no longer really having a home now that his mother has died. A very sad, but beautiful song.
He sings on "Last Man on Earth" about how the best things in life are worthless now because they are free. His words.
In that song he protests the present age of portfolios, SUVs, computers, e-mail, air-conditioning?, politicians, and about life in general.
In the song "I'm not gonna cry" you'd think it was some sad ballad about heartbreak, but it isn't.
Instead, he goes on to use almost all of the expressions we use about crying. examples: 96 tears, tears in your beer, crying over spilt milk and so on. A very creative and funny song with some great banjo and fiddle work there in the music.
The song "Surviving Twin", Loudon sings about how tired he is of being told how much he looks like his father.
Wainwright wrote the songs with all of the baby boomers exactly in mind.
Well I don't know if that is exactly true, but his life experiences, being a boomer himself, are our life experiences.
You will not be disappointed after listening to this CD.
lounging around the house like the last man.......2005-06-30
Last Man on Earth is a quirky, immediate and intensely listenable group of songs Loudon Wainwright III wrote while adjusting to the death of a mother he loved very much. Nowhere near as enigmatic as Rufus, and not quite the folksy soft pop of Martha (his equally talented children) These songs are concise without being predictable or cheesy. This combined with the production walking a tight rope between nearly untouched and surprisingly well crafted, paints the picture of watching Twilight Zone repeats and presidential debates with only the walls and the thoughts of a soul searching middle aged wanderer to keep company perhaps better than anything has in recent memory. Reaching audiences around the time of September 11, these songs were written before those heady times and this log of personal pain that was written in that more naïve and trusting time can take on special importance to anyone who has ever known the confusion and pain of losing someone they love.
This is an amazingly solid collection from one of the most adept artists that contributes to the pop music era. A true talent.

Dora you can do it with all your pots and pans.......2003-08-20
I'll keep this short. Haven't bought a Loudon record for a long while, though I've seen him live a couple of times. I think the final track 'HOMELESS' is utterly beautiful, honest, painful, heartfelt. It is worth the purchase price for just this track. It is a very special piece of song writing from a unique and special artist.
A Final Disappointment.......2002-12-06
You all aren't going to be happy with me (press the unhelpful button all you like), but I just couldn't enjoy this album much beyond a couple of listens. Maybe it's me -- I keep buying Wainwright expecting to see him re-capture the magic he had on albums like Album III and Unrequited. You can't get better than "Dead Skunk" or "Red Guitar" or "New Paint" or "Mr. Guilty". Now it's like he tries too hard. The music is passable, but the lyrics -- though sometimes inspired -- too often seem forced. You see the rhymes coming from a mile away. This from the guy who came up with a gem like "You can feel it in your olfactory"? And it's the self-absorption apparent in all his songs that give you clues to all the failed relationships he has demoaned throughout his career. Anyway, that is my humble opinion.

Dark, arty and other worldly. Last Man on Earth is a haunting, swirly, ambient affair that shares a kinship with their February 2000 debut than it does with anything this band has done.
Customer Reviews:
Cowboy Junkies + Psychadelic Dream Rock = Feathermerchants.......2007-02-14
As soon as I heard "Go For a Walk" on a local college station, I was hooked. Immersive, melancholy and surreal -- this disc was made for long drives, overcast days, late nights and headphones.
SOULFUL AND ENTERTAINING!!.......2006-06-26
I HEARD THEM PLAY AT THE NY PUBLIC THEATRE IN THE SPRING OF 2006 - AND THEY ARE LOVELY! I HAVE TWO OF THEIR CDS AND LOVE, LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Their best yet; solid start to finish.......2006-04-10
Anyone remotely intrigued by the darker elements of feathermerchants' last two releases, "Unarmed Against the Dark", and "Street Theater", will be knocked out by "Last Man on Earth". Gone are the occasional upbeat, even danceable tunes like "Temporary", "Heartbreak Beat", and "Best Regards", in favor of songs in the heavier vein of "Ursuline" and "Farmers Night Out". (O.k., I suppose you could waltz to "Hitchcock Blonde" but it would be more than a little weird.) Songwriters Pete Veru and Shannon Kennedy have crafted unresolved short stories of longing, self-doubt, regret, anger, paranoia, and panic. Kennedy plays each part perfectly, her vocals layered over the always excellent feathermerchants rhythms and arrangements, highlighted by Jim Chapdelaine's spacy, ambient, and pervasive Robert Fripp-like guitar work, a new touch that truly sets this album apart from the group's earlier titles. This is one of those increasingly rare records that I can play without reaching for the remote control to skip a track here or there. Whether I'm trying to find some new insight into the fate of the songs' protagonists or just wanting to hear some quality, unique music that's literate *and* has a decent hook, this one's been in very heavy rotation at home, in the car, and at work. Good thing it's not vinyl, or I'd need a new copy already.

Album Description
A new and very efficient band, even though its musicians are only little influenced by the music of YES, ("Relayer" is one of the most adventurous albums issued by Jon ANDERSON's band in the Seventies), RELAYER allies the refinement of beautiful piano parts with a passionate energy. Their influences come from Progressive rock (KANSAS or RUSH), and from neo Progressive (MARILLION or NOW), this blend of sophistication and energy also evoking a kind of DREAM THEATER whose vocals would be sung by the leader of YES... Following "A Grander Vision" (1994), "The Teething Fashion" (1996) shows a very accessible and melodical music with a perfect interpretation. As for the excellent "Last Man On Earth" issued in 1999, it has a somewhat tougher style, but still keeps the basic characteristics.

A dark and mysterious journey into loneliness. Anu combines elements of 80s and 90s alternative rock, bringing to mind such diverse artists as Joy Division, Gary Numan, Nine Inch Nails, and Pink Floyd. Distressed drum loops, processed electric guitars, and synthesizers create deep soundscapes wrapped around Anu's rich, emotional voice.

Album Description
Relayer - Last Man on Earth
The third and latest CD release from this Chicago-based progressive foursome proves to be their strongest material yet. With a unique and evolving approach to progressive songwriting, Relayer continues to produce fresh intrigue among new listeners and fans alike. This great songwriting, coupled with strong performances and a "live" production style, make Last Man on Earth a wonderfully intimate experience.
Relayer is one of the few bands to successfully marry quality musical instrumentation and variety with catchy melodies and lyrics in its studio performances. Last Man on Earth is no exception. The CD does a good job of exploring the different sides of the bands creative repertoire. Songs such as "I Destiny" and the title track "Last Man on Earth" showcase Relayer's melodic side. Whereas, songs like "We Swim" and "Paint Me Red" explore the more musically surreal aspect the band has become known for.
Last Man on Earth is a "must-have" for fans of progressive rock music, but will be enjoyed by a wide range of music lovers.
Customer Reviews:
Relayer..... A positive choice for Prog.......2005-01-13
Relayer ditched it's keyboard player for this release, so singer John Sahagian and guitarist Tim Laroi took over the duties. The result is atmospheric keyboard washes rather than a soloing instrument, nether player stretches out. Guitar dominates the music, which reduces the Prog element, but seems to free the band to play more immediate "live" sounding music. The Yes moments from Teething Fashion are pretty much non-existent. The members have eshewed the flavorings for a more hard rock approach. There are a few lighter moments, but over-all, they show off their rock chops.
The vocals are the key here. John Sahagian has a voice that demands to be heard. He still has the Freddie Mercury inflections as I stated on the Teething Fashion review, but is more straight ahead here, then the playfulness of the past. For me, this is the strength of Relayer. The bass playing of Tom Burke really comes out in this release, nice heavy bottom, not flashy, just solid. Bill Kiser keeps things together with strong drumming and tasteful fills. Not flashy either. Simply a solid foundation for Tim Laroi's chunky guitar work. Laroi's playing is neither over the top nor understated. He plays for the song. It all seems to work in an organic fashion, everything meshes and creates a lush sonic cornucopia of tones and melodies.
They aren't playing anything new or groundbreaking, what they are playing is just great music with some key prog elements; shifting gears from quiet, soft interludes to powerful climaxes, long multi-segmented tunes with odd meters, highly professional instrumental passages and well written lyrics. This is an album made to be played live.
This disc would appeal to fans of Salem Hill, IZZ, Marillion, Jadis...... Queen? Only if you liked when Freddie rocked.
Since this release is from 1999 and they don't appear to have a web site. I'm forced to assume they are now defunct, however I'd like to be proved wrong.
These guys are pretty good.......2002-04-20
I saw Relayer recently in Chicago and they are a tight band.
It's been a few years since they've played out, but I think they have aged well. I would guess they are working on a new cd because they played a lot material I have not heard. They always treat the crowd to a "prog" favorite, and this time it was Supper's Ready... a very nice way to leave the club.
the truth.......2001-12-14
Obviously, Mr. Duren needs some new material. This is the same diatribe, almost verbatim, from a previous review under a different name. He should spend less time rolling the 20 sided and come up with something original. I have been a Relayer fan for the past few years and am anxiously awaiting a new release. "Last Man On Earth" is a well rounded and very original recording that will for sure tide me over until their next masterpiece is released. Until then, this is an album well worth purchasing. For anyone who disagrees, you are either not listening to the music, or you are too busy ironing your tunic and casting spells to care one way or the other.
RELAYER.......2001-12-14
After several listenings, this is my new favorite prog. band
Don't get! - even if it were the last album on earth!.......2001-11-26
It is difficult to put into words the torturous pain that I felt after purchasing and listening to this nauseating tripe..... I did not hear any strong melodies or excellent prog rock elements (contrary to what was put forth and caused me to check this band out). Instead, I heard nothing but a cacophony of screeching, wailing, discordant ramblings, pitiful guitar playing, and psychedelic chaos. The vocalist's "singing" (arguably the worst aspect of the band's "music") is reminiscent of fingernails being drawn across a chalkboard, and, at unexplainable moments, the banshee shrieks out as if his limbs are being severed. If this album is the best one of the three, the other two releases must be somewhat akin to having your skin slowly flayed off your body while being immersed in boiling salt water. Though some Japanese and Germans may enjoy driving themselves to the edge of insanity (or the label wants you to think so), do your mental state a favor and RUN (don't walk) away from this album and this band!
