A weekend blast on a single CD!.......2000-09-29

As a long standing fan of Mumbo Gumbo I was thrilled with the release of this live cd. They took the best recordings of several years worth of performances and managed to capture the magic the makes the average person an instant Gumbo fanatic. I had the pleasure of being in the audience for a couple of the tracks! Light hearted and toe-tapping by nature, this is one CD I may actually wear out.

Great CD with more than one great song!.......2000-03-31

This CD was suggested by the bass player at one of their concerts in Folsom. He nailed it. Not only did I love them before, I am an even bigger fan now. The CD has a great mix of upbeat songs that remind you of warm summer evenings and good times. This is the perfect CD to put on in the car, when you have company over, to unwind, to let loose and most of all when you want to have fun. Someone always asks with interest when I put it on.

These guys are really famous here in Carson City, where I live. Every summer they do a concert for free and I always go see them. They are really good and if you like good music then you will love this

Read the other reviewers for details, but out of my 500+ disc collection - not unbelievably large but sizeable all the same - this goes in my top 10 favorites of all time and in the top 5 of the past 5 years.

Fresh, energizing mix of upbeat, FUN music!!.......1999-06-24

Mumbo Gumbo's fresh mix of zeidico, bayou blues, and upbeat rhythms are truly energizing and entertaining. Take a "Wild Ride" and I dare you not to sing along. From the positive "Daisy Chain" to the gritty "Love Makes Me Stupid", this CD is a FUN adventure for all who enjoy GOOD music written and played by TRUE musicians. And if you're ever in the Tahoe/Reno area, you can see for yourself live--they're incredible crowd pleasers in concert! Definitely my favorite new CD.

Chris Webster and Tracy Walton the singing Gumbo Duet really exude their diversity and superb musicianship with the POTLUCK compilation. With the hot vocals, rhythms and brass of such cuts as "That Chick Is Twisted", "Red Canoe", "Wild Ride" and "Original You" both Tracy and Chris shine in their energy and musical talents creating a special connection with all "GumboHeads" old and new!

Just try keepin' those feet from dancing!

As well...the diversity of other cuts such as "Coyote Romantico", "Little Things", "Love Makes Me Stupid" and "Dig Me A Hole" have something for every mood...from melodic charm and tenderness to true life silliness and honesty that most will find "hits 'em where they live."

Reggy Marks "Mr. Rainbow Love" is un! stoppable and a joy with his tenor and soprano saxophones and flute, Lynn "Mikey" Palmer shows his talents in some innovative riffs on the bass guitar. Rick Lotter meticulously provides the group's foundation with his expertise on the drums. Steve Stizzo - talented keyboardist and accordian meistro is nothin' but sweet! Newcomers Michael Greggory and Kevin Allen (electric guitar gurus) are hot and bring additional energy that blends perfectly with the vets in the group! An added joy is the artful strokes of one of the band's founder's Billy Fairfield - Keyboardist on "Coyote Romantico" ... aaahhhh!

All the cuts are written by these artists and definitely worth the listen!

The only thing as enlightening as listening to their new CD - POTLUCK ... is seeing them in concert!

Once you experience the "Gumbo" scene in person... you'll discover not only do these folks rock...they love it...the crowd love's it!

More Than "Just" Zydeco.......2002-02-06

Although Mumbo Gumbo seems to have cut its teeth in the zydeco/ Louisiana dance music genre, it strongly suggests a broader musical base on "Deep Soup"-- by virtue of not only the eclectic song mix, but also the band's sheer talent. Having grown up in Davis, California with several of the key band members, including the lead singer, Chris Webster, and the drummer, Rick Lotter, I can tell you that they are capable of almost anything musically. While the straight-ahead party music of such cuts as "Sugar Pit" and "Ay Ay Ay" are entertaining enough, I'm more interested in the jazzier/ bluesier tracks ("I'm Driving," "Everything I Do"), as well as Chris Webster's showstopping Jimmy Cliff cover, "Sitting In Limbo." Ultimately the group may outgrow its present niche-- and perhaps they have already done so. In the meantime, though, "Deep Soup" is a fun album that hints at much bigger things.

Cures what ails ya!.......2000-09-29

I am convinced that if we could find speakers big enough for the whole world to hear Mumbo Gumbo we would achieve world peace. It is not possible to listen to this CD without smiling! The combination of soulful vocals and joyful cajun rhythms makes it a guaranteed success. I have purchased many copies of this CD to give to friends and family so that I could get my copy back!

A Lot Of Fun!!!.......2002-06-16

I've listened to all of the band's CDs and they are all great (except the "live" one- poorly recorded). What's amazing to me is that they started out very strong with this one, and their talent hasn't diminished a wit. This one has such a variety of musical styles; from the cajun licks of "Barbeque", to the bluesy chops of "He's Got", to the jazzy riffs of the instrumental "Jim Bob's Way", and much more. Any fan of music in general will really like this collection of songs. In fact, I'm a little surprised that no one has reviewed it yet. These guys and gals are terrific artists and it's obvious that they not only play well off of each other, they also have fun playing together as a band. How can you not get [pulled] in by that? And to top it off, they are a local product. Mumbo Gumbo is one of many arguments against Sacramento's reputation as a "cow town". Moo!

Man can these Sacramento sauciers sing and write....hooah...et tois...

The melodies, the harmonies, the intricacies, the musicality...

You will never tire of it...you will be amazed at how it just keeps growing on you...listen after listen...month after month...year after year...just like everything they do

If you've got kids they'll be smiling and singing right along with you...and there's simply not much more joyful than that...cause this world can simply use more joy...and Mumbo Gumbo is a most tasty helping...

They are without a doubt the best unknown band in America today...If not among the best bands bar none...

If anyone should stumble upon this review...take my word and the words of those below and buy this...

This is an excellent CD, well worth the money! Great fun music!

Best Gumbo you ever had - so far.......2001-12-09

I am a Mumbo Gumbo fan, and really love this band. Hot vocals and solid contributions from all the members (drummer is very good). World music - no bad words - accordian rock (?) yep! You must try one of the CD's listed. Seven is the latest and greatest with many solid tunes. Great horn/sax section. Why do I like the music? Fun to sing along with, excellent harmony, thoughtful lyrics, dance-able tunes (toe tapping at the least!).
Think New Orleans mixed with San Francisco. Lots of energy and love shows in the music. They are having fun making you happy listening to the music.

Rock, Rolls and Rules!.......2001-10-11

Mumbo Gumbo is good for what ails you! In "Seven" they continue to excite, soothe and just generally entertain their listeners. A reccommended buy for anyone who would like to hear some good singin' tunes that are upbeat without being cheesy.
