My all-time "sleeper".......2005-09-24

I discovered The Freddy Jones Band back when "North Avenue Wakeup Call" was released. The alternative rock station in Boston had "Waitress" on their playlist and upon hearing it I was immediately intrigued. I purchased the cassette and was forever hooked! I must've played that tape more than any other cassette I had ever owned. The songs switch gears from ballads to rockers with an effortless,seamless flow .These guys display songwriting talents and musicianship that I find second to none. I feel that this CD could be re-released today and have a bigger impact.To me it's as relevant musically as any of the newer material I've listened to.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them play at a small venue in Boston and it furthermore baffled me as to why The Freddy Jones Band didn't attract more attention and the recognition that they obviously deserved!! To this day I can't figure how this band wasn't a huge success!

Why am I only the second reviewer?.......2005-09-08

10 years ago, Albany, New York had a creative and independant radio station-WXLE. The listener was guaranteed to hear music not played on the other tight listed mainstream stations in the area. It was on this station that I was introduced to FJB. WXLE is long gone and so is FJB but in listening to North Ave Wake Up Call, the excitement and the flowing energy of the music is still so present. It's like listening to the best elements of the Allman Brothers and Little Feat with in my opinion better vocals. The music is so positive and life affirming with incredible mastery of the lyrics and the instruments. Say, maybe that's why they didn't last.

It'll be a while until you hear another group with this much talent... They're a rare gem that never hit the mainstream and maybe that's what keeps them so special in the fan base that still exists even years after they broke up.

obnoxious jerk is as bad as any telemarketer.......2005-03-07

What started out as a good game of giving telemarketers a taste of their own medicine is now just tom Mabe's obnoxious prank calling. Tom Mabe has done a 180 degree turn around and become the very person he despised in the first place.

By making prank calls to people in their hotel rooms at 4 AM, Mabe is worse than any telemarketer who ever targeted him. There is no excuse for what he is doing now. He's just an obnoxious kid trying to make money by harrassing innocent people. Don't support him.

I found out about this CD when Tom Mabe was a guest on the Walton and Johnson radio show -- the bits they discussed were funny enough that I had to track the disc down. It's absolutely hysterical. Perhaps I'm drawing a bit of sadistic pleasure from this, since the victims are telemarketers and therefore creatures I find hard to sympathize for, but this is a lot funnier to me than other crank call CDs. I just wish there was more on the disc, the running time is a bit short. Also, the song at the end of the album, "Pick One," wasn't really that funny, and had nothing to do with the theme of the rest of the disc. It's inclusion seemed pretty nonsensical to me.

I was surprised to discover that this set also includes a DVD with a few Mabe stand-up routines and about 20 minutes of live antics previewing "Mabe in the USA" (I couldn't tell if this was a TV show or special he has in the works). The "Mabe in the USA" segment was funny -- some hidden camera stuff, some pranks... a lot of the same kind of humor as you'd see on shows like "Jackass," only not as crude or potentially dangerous. Much funnier, in my opinion.

Between the CD and the DVD, overall, I think this is a great value.

It's Ok but..........2003-09-16

The guy kind of crosses the line to obnoxious from funny. A couple of them are OK but it gets old fast. He's a one trick pony.
Save your money - download a few of the more interesting ones for free and see if you like it. Then re-consider buying the cd. As an example, he calls people at 3Am and they get mad. Ha Ha Ha. The first one (round one) a little more creative.

Hilarious in places, but..........2003-08-28

As someone who has suffered in the past from the attentions of telemarketers and now goes to some lengths to block and avoid them (I do hope the Do Not Call Registry IS allowed to take effect from October), I really empathize with Tom Mabe. Some of the calls recorded here really hit the mark and had me in tears of laughter. That said, at least one is alarmingly mean in spirit and execution. Not necessary, Tom, not necessary - you can, and in the other tracks do, make your point without stooping to that.

funnier than revenge.......2003-08-26

A Wake Up CAll for Telemarketers takes Tom Mabe's last record and goes to new hysterical heights. Anyone who has ever answered a telemarketers phone call can live vicariously through Mabe's antics. The calls where Mabe stays at the same hotel as a telemarketers convention and proceeds to harass various rooms at the wee hours of the morning is comic genius.

A good un' from John ........2006-06-29

His Best "later years" one was the 'comeback' album, titled "Chicago Line" featuring BOTH Coco Montoya , AND Walter Trout .. who trade off nicely ..This has a nice re-working of a great earlier tune featured on the USA Union album the track 'Natures Disappearing' is nicely re-done here, plus a nice Tony Joe White cover 'Undercover Agent' Production is clean and fat sounding .. great Cd . There is a nice collection of his work on this label (Silvertone )' but Natures Disappearing is not on there, which is a shame as it's a worthy example of his best work, and deserves to be on there. You can't win em 'all .I agree that after this release, the quality control deteriorated somewhat ..Sometimes I feel that John needs to try something a bit different, but as he in his mid 70's why bother! I always liked his acoustic stuff , and another Cd like that would be nice . The Harvey Mandel , Larry Taylor , Don Sugarcane Harris Combo was unique.His "Back To The Roots" release was always a favorite too ..He seems hell bent on rockin' hard indefinitely .

One of the best Mayall collections ever........2005-07-15

While not actually a 'blues' album, the roots are not far away. What makes this album special is the versatility of both Mayall and his sidemen. Montoya shines as does Mick Taylor. All the songs are enjoyable, very listenable without being too commercial.
If you are looking for a sample of John Mayall for your first listen...buy this CD!

A True Blues Legend.......2005-06-26

This was the first John Mayall CD I bought and I'm glad I did! Coco Montoya plays great guitar. If you like Mayall I think you'll enjoy this album.

Best blues album ever made!.......2003-05-27

I believe John Mayall's "Wake up call" (1993) is the best blues album I have ever heard. Compared to his "Blues for the lost days" (1997) or "Padlock on the blues" (1999), this album is superior in every way. The songs are quite unique and there's plenty of variation even it is blues all the way. Ever since Mayall released "Wake up call", he has gradually got worse and what used to be something thrilling have become just boring and not above mediocre standard at all. The follow up "Spinning coin" (1995) includes a couple of good songs like "When the devil starts crying" and "Ain't no brakeman", but on more recent releases you won't find any songs of the same calibre as "Mail order mystics", "Maydell", "Wake up call", "Undercover agent for the blues" or "Loaded dice". John Mayall's "Wake up call" is in some way comparable to Gary Moore's "Still got the blues", and if you like that one, I'm almost certain you'll like this one.

One of the best of Mayall version 2.......2001-02-19

As a Mayall fan of the original albums, I added John Mayall's albums back into the fold after 'Sense of Place' and I have every one since. 'Wake up call' is memorable for many reasons not the least for the guitar of Coco Montoya and Mick Taylor. The stand out tracks include 'Nature Disappearing' a rework of an earlier Mayall track which features the magical playing of Coco Montoya and 'Not at home' a great song featuring Mick Taylor. Also check out the live album 'Life in the jungle' as possibly the best Mayall album.

It makes a nice Gift.......2005-06-07

I got this for Christmas one year.... from my mom. Her reasoning behind it was because she wanted to expose me to more stuff then what I usually listen to which is various Metal genres. She heard this guy on the radio and decided I needed some of his stuff as a "vacation" from what I usually listen to. This was kind of her and rather daring as it was definitely something risky. Would her metalhead of a son suddenly fall in love with Gary Hoey and change his direction? Or would he break the CD in half or use the pieces for target practice? Well the answer lies somewhere in between the two. I'm not the average stereotypical metal fan, which is rather stupid nowadays. I don't love anything because its metal, I love it when it has good musicianship and when there are good lyrics. I can enjoy the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and all those classics. Heck my favorite band is a group called the Butthole Surfers (they aren't metal). So that clears things up and thus leads to my opinion of Gary Hoey. This guy is really talented. What he creates here is much like driving music. There's not a whole lot behind the music, but there doesn't have to be. It's just how he does it, his skill as a guitarist is very high up there. Yet there are several Metal guitarists that can top him for sure (Andreas kisser from Brazilian band Sepultura comes to mind). And while I'm positive about this, it still failed in grabbing my attention for long. I never yearn to pop this in the CD Player saying "Oh man, I gotta hear Electric Karma again!" It only pops up when I can't decide what to listen to and I'm on the road. Not everybody will love this, but its nice to have as a gift. So therefore I think 3 stars is pretty accurate for this.

P.S. the cover of Low Rider is pretty cool too.

Probably Gary's Best Work!.......2005-01-14

Outside of Joe Satriani and Steve Morse you won't find a
more talented instramental guitarist than Gary Hoey!
Gary may not get as much "acclaim" as Joe, but he should.
Gary's been putting out great instramental work since the
late 80's! One area that Gary may have an edge over
others instramental artists is his song writing. It's not
blistering guitar work just for the sake of it. This is
good music begining to end. And when Gary takes the vocal
reigns on a few tracks you don't kringe. It just sounds
right. On top of that I think Gary's one of the best at
doing a cover tune. He does'nt copy it, he puts his stamp
on it. If your new to Gary's work check out his
"Greatest Hits" as well.

A great place to start.......2005-01-02

If you never have purchased a Gary Hoey CD before, this is a great one to pick up for fans and guitar players. Gary plays with a great feel with the grace of a player who knows where he is going. Among the excelent compositions there are some wonderfull covers. This CD is perfect to crank up when your driving.

this will blow you away !!!!!.......2004-11-02

OK now I listen to almost every guitar great you can imagine. And will BUY not download all of their CDs. Hendrix, Petrucci, Zappa, Blackmore, Trower, Vai, Satriani, well you get the point. Now I heard about Hoey in a cover sort of way. Heard him play other people's songs but not his. Well found this jewel of a cd in Montreal, bought it and now it has melted in my CD player !!!!

This is one smoking hot cd, lotsa chops, great solos evrything a guitar freak can ask for. As for the vocals, I figure if Hendrix sang, Gary can too..... :O)

He reminds me of Vai (for the whah-whah pedal work) but apart from that. His playing is top-notch. And this CD is a MUST....

YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID....

Rock of Ages.......2004-02-27

This release by Gary took a little time to grow on me but I bought it a day after seeing him in concert. Vocals are better than expected as I had never heard any on previous albums. The mix is a little flat with a bit too much emphasis on the guitar but otherwise a great bit of work. Gary seems to have a different view of life and it shows in his songwriting, but that is a GOOD thing. I enjoy every track on it but the title song sticks in my mind most of all. Highly recommended, old school rockers will dig it!

Stunningly good work from Robin Eubanks.......2004-05-17

As much as I love his brilliant work on the more world-jazzy disc, Mental Images, Wake Up Call represents, I believe, Robin Eubanks's finest work on record to date.

Why's this one better?

It works out of a more typical jazz context, thus reducing the exotic factor and simultaneously raising the straight-ahead jazz bar. That Eubanks meets this challenge and surpasses the brilliance of Mental images is quite something.

The key, much as I'm reluctant to say it, giving my tepid reaction to most of his solo discs and his role in various Wynton Marsalis bands, is pianist Eric Reed. Here he lays down and establishes the exact right groove for this ambitious music. Whether it's the prickly, energetic vibe of the neglected Wayne Shorter opener, "United," or the sultry swing of Lee Morgan's gorgeous samba, "Ceora," Reed nails the vibe, setting the mood for what is surely Eubanks's strongest soloing on disc. Moreover, he rips off an absolute astounding solo on "Rush Hour." I'm afraid I've sorely underregarded this astounding musician. Or, maybe (as often happens), he's just had difficulty finding his ideal playing context. Whatever. He surely delivers here.

The rest of the band's all over it. I'd have to disagree with the view that there is something wrong with the bassist. Lonnie Plaxico, one of the more versatile and widely recorded jazz bassists, here turns in what I believe is one of his best performances on disc. I do agree that Duane Eubanks has perfectly caught the vibe, and that Antonio Hart, another somewhat neglected player, mightily contributes. Indeed, the ensemble playing is some of the best I've ever heard. And once again, Gene Jackson perfectly defines the percussion palette.

High points include a gorgeous, wistful rendering of Shorter's great vehicle, "Oriental Folk Song"; the extroverted Eubanks original and title cut, "Wake Up Call"; an achingly beautiful reading of the Rogers and Hart tune, "You Are Too Beautiful," a Eubanks/Reed/Plaxico trio, with the leader displaying a previously unheard burnished and romantic side; and "Rush Hour," a tricky post-bop number featuring some great band interaction, esp. between the brothers Eubanks (Robin and Duane).

This, for me, is what makes jazz worth it: fabulous playing, deep grooves, uncanny interaction, and a the deft swagger that comes only from musical companions of the highest accomplishment interacting at the loftiest levels.

Wonderful Interplay.......2001-03-24

Trombonist sometimes have problems in being objective when speaking of their hereos. I believe it fair to say that this is a great effort. This album does not show the depth of skill that Robin is capable of! However, the ensemble's sonic creations at times are glorious. So, I would recommend starting with a different album (if this is to be your introduction).

I have been a fan and student of Robin's music since his duet collaboration with fellow bone player Steve Turre. (Robin, please do a follow up recording!) The weak link here is in the bass playing. The flow is disruptive, never gels quite right. Maybe Dave Holland was unavailable for the gig? The youngest of the Eubanks clan (Duane) performance is laudable. This was his recording debut. The pick of tunes is strong. Check out the swing and chops on Scrapple From The Apple. My favorite tune on this outing definitely is Oriental Folk Song! Antonio Hart is brilliant in his communicative endeavours though out this session. Any album that highlights work from Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter deserves attention!! Please do not ignore this work. It is worthy of the cost and most importantly your time!

Hubert's Best Solo CD.......2002-12-04

I feel this is Hubert's best solo CD, the back-up band of Jimmy Vivino and the other guys on Conan O' Briens show give Hubert the room he needs to perform some unbelievable guitar solo's. The songs are all very different, but with the professional back-up band, Hubert's performance shines on every number. Definitely his best solo work to date.

Michelle Willson's albums all have been strong, but this may be her best yet. She offers up a tasty mix of R&B, jazz and blues. Her singing is as strong as ever, with maybe a new intensity. Her band is tight and inspired. This music is full of joy. Highly recommended
