As feel-good friendly as a vintage Tom Petty anthem. As singsong jangly as an old Irish Rovers standard. And every bit as backwoods basic as some Carter Family lament from the '30s. Nope. There's not much fault to be found with the pint-swilling, rafter-raising folk-rock of Celtic crooners the Saw Doctors. This is the ultimate party band, whose "N17" is--in addition to being one of the biggest-selling singles in Irish history--best experienced live, with every voice in the house jumping in on the call-and-response chorus. Revolving around the hearth-fire vocals of guitarist Davy Carton, SD discs may not quite capture that frantic energy, but they're typically more of the "N17" same. Sun Street is no exception. It's a warm, personable effort, with trademark pub pleasers ("Tommy K," "Catriona Tells Lies," and the goofy "D'ya Wanna Hear My Guitar?") complementing plush, gentle ballads ("Galway and Mayo," "Heading for the Sunshine," a nursery-rhyme-ish "Away with the Fairies"). Lift a Guinness to the lads. The world needs more true-blue bands like the Saw Doctors. --Tom Lanham

Rollicking music....now, where's my Guinness?.......2000-12-21
I picked up this album not long ago on a whim. Having heard only a few of the Doctors' songs, I didn't know what to expect from a full album. Well, now I know I didn't waste my money. This is a rollicking set of songs that gets better with each listen...whether or not I'm sipping a Guinness. Standouts include "Best of Friends," "Galway and Mayo" and, my personal favorite, "Carry Me Away" (a haunting ballad). For sheer toe-tapping pleasure, you can't beat "Heading for the Sunshine" and the neo-traditional "Joyce Country Ceili Band" (listen for the smile-inducing lyrics). Folks, this album proves that Irish music is so much more than "Danny Boy" and the Irish Tenors. I'll be sure to catch the Doctors the next time they're in the States.
Another "Saw Doctors" Triumph.......2000-04-02
While I agree with another reviewer that you can't capture the excitement of the "Saw Doctors'" live performances on a cd, I have to say that I play this disc more than any other that I own... It's got every type of music that the Doctors' fans have come to expect...ones detailing yearnings for distinctly Irish events and places, some that are toe-tappingly fun, and the last one, which I plan to put in my will to be played at my funeral someday (listen to it, and you'll get my point! )...a great disc!
Unmatchable FUN!.......1999-05-03
Outstanding album! If you want my thoughts on it, read the Amazon review above. If you want my thoughts on the band, read on.
I saw the Docs in NYC on St. Pat's day and ended up staying another day SOLELY so I could see them again the next night. It was at those shows that I first heard many of the songs on Sun Street and I was ecstatic when the album finally came out.
This band tore the house down!!! I worked at a Cabaret in college and NEVER saw anything like the craic to be had at a Saw Doctors concert. Imagine a house full of twentysomethings, all hoisting their Harps, whipped into a frenzy by the high-energy tunes and familiar lyrics of the premier Irish folk rock band in the land.
The Saw Doctors take you back to a time when playing music was fun - not a business. The sense you get when you see them is that they took an Irish tradition, playing music, and turned it up a notch, adding electric guitars to the flute and accordion, and making it (more) fun in the process. They don't take themselves, or their music, too seriously, and that's part of what makes it so grand.
If you're curious, check them out. Look them up on the web and go to their next concert. (They play the Fleadh's in the States, but they're better indoors.) But be prepared. I GUARANTEE you'll have the time of your life.
Sounds just like the Pogues quit drinking........1999-01-04
This cheery mix of listenable four-leaf clovers lets us all know what would have happened if the Pogues had quit drinking in their prime. Although this CD was forced on me by my former boss, I have played it TWICE of my OWN FREE WILL...which is pretty good considering ginger beer isn't exactly my bag. Thumbs up!
great cd, still keeping the traditional irish sound.......1999-01-03
I am a major fan of The Saw Doctors and I own all of their cd's. I am pleased to say that The Doctors have kept their own unique sound that I thoroughly enjoy. To all The Saw Doctors fans out there, A GREAT BUY.

Customer Reviews:
A band that knows how to have fun.......2004-02-28
Too many bands have forgotten what it is to make music for the sheer joy of it. The Saw Doctors on SONGS FROM SUN STREET definitely keep an eye on the inherent happiness music can bring. This is not to say that the music mindlessly happy, rather as they say on "Good News,"- "Just gimme the good news, the happy not the sad."
Check out the lyrics sheet on this one- Little tales of where these songs came from- this is fine stuff. From that lying "Catriona" to the to thrill of imagining yourself listening to the "Joyce Country Ceili Band," You rarely will find a better time than an hour with the Saw Doctors.
What Cheer!.......2002-11-18
If ever there were a good times CD, "Songs from Sun Street" is it. First released in 1998, Saw Doctors have been referred to as the second best Irish band, after U2. "Good News" has a driving pop beat, "The oceans all polluted; we've damaged all the sky; and there's wars & wars & rumors & a hungry baby cries...just give me the good news!" Equally infectious, "Sugartown" is hook-laden jangly pop, a delight. "Galway & Mayo" is kind of an Irish road song that paints a picture of the Irish summer, "there's a stillness in the summer air, sheepdog lying in the sun, three young girls with butterfly nets break into a run." "Carry Me Away" is a dreamy slow song followed by "Heading for the Sunshine," a midtempo track. "Catriona Tells Lies" is a great fun, almost bubble gum rock, with the background "la la la" vocals making the tune hilarious, "I would follow her to kingdom, oh yeah, wouldn't you?" "Blah, Blah, Blah" has great pulse and energy while "D'ya Wanna Hear My Guitar?" makes one think the guy wants the girl to play with more than his guitar, great double entendre. "Joyce Country Celli Band" is a rollicking trad piece; and "High Nellie" is a quick instrumental. "We did everything together from an early age, smoked our first fags behind the school hedge," the Doctor sings on "Best of Friends." "Will It Ever Stop Raining?" is a bit of Irish Reggae while "Tommy K" is a bit over-earnest ode to a D.J. "Away with the Fairies" is bit of nutty whimsy. The CD concludes with the rock march "I'll Be On My Way," a few minutes of silence, and another little ditty probably called "It Must Be Driving You Mad." Saw Doctors' music rocks, is upbeat, overall happy in tone despite some darker elements in the lyrics. If you're looking for a great party record, visit Sun Street! Enjoy!
Absolutely fantastic CD.......2002-09-13
I had never heard of this group before until an online friend from Ireland now living in Boston recommended it to me.At first I was reluctant to buy it but I finally did after much prodding. I was glad I did. There is not a bad track on the entire album. They remind me a lot of the British invasion type of music from the sixties. Each song is a delight to listen to. "Catronia Tells Lies" rocks with an irrestible beat and "Galway and Mayo"is timeless in its appeal. I liked this CD so much I also purchased "Sing a Powerful Song" which is also great. Thanks my online friend. What an enjoyable listening experience.

I have had this CD for some time now and each time I listen to it it gets better and better. Recently, I saw The Saw Doctors in concert and was instantly hooked on the band. I got three other of their CDs and they are just as good if not better that this one. The show they put on is one not to be missed. If the Saw Doctors are playing in a city near you I would highly recommend checking them out. You won't be disappointed...5 STARS
