4 out of 5 stars Exotica for the home. Exotica for the car........2007-06-20

This cd literally transports you to the jungle rich islands of the Pacific. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2007-05-15

I've always enjoyed the sounds of exotica and especially when skillfully done by martinb Denny. This CD compiles the best from his long career. The folksat Ultra Lounge have put together a really enjoyable and easy listening CD. Be sure to mix a Mai Tai before listening.

4 out of 5 stars Jungle Jim adventures.......2007-02-03

You can image yourself immersed in the jungle with unseen creatures making weird and wonderful sounds. Truly a curious and novel album. Nicely packaged with a beaut booklet with pictures and interesting info. A great addition to my lounge music collection. Sonics brilliantly mastered by Bob Norberg.

5 out of 5 stars Exotica Please.......2007-01-17

Martin Denny usually strikes you with his irrestible sound. Here the music is great and the sonics are as well. What more can you ask for - except if you find this kind of music too exotic for your taste. Live a little - if "Misirlou" doesn't perk up your soul, I frankly don't know what can?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Perfectly Ordered Memories.......2006-12-28

The first thing that strikes me about this compilation is that the breakdown of what sound was doing at the time, for me, is dead on: Phase 1: 1978 - 1982; Phase 2: 1983 - 1985; Phase 3: 1986 - 1988; Phase 4: 1989- 1991. That would bring you, musically speaking, through the break of New Wave and the second British Invasion, on through a change from more pop sounding stuff through things with a harder edge. If you listen to the growling of say, Godsmack, and attempt to go to this, it won't work for you. Play this amid some Echo & the Bunnymen, (which it's closest to,) the Clash, (which this is somewhat related to,) and perhaps, Nick Cave. This was an astounding band for it's time, and falls directly in what was really a "New Wave": a distinct second British sweep of music that happened in the late seventies. Compare also to Bauhaus, Tears for Fears or early Cure, and you will hear it - a very distict, edgy sound, very, very different from what was popular in the States at the time, (depending on one's tastes, that would have been Elton John, Queen, Billy Joel or perhaps Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd or Aerosmith.) This new sound took some by storm, for others, it took a little getting used to, but once you "got" it, it was magical (and far more rebellious and anti-social than Lynyrd Skynyrd ever dreamed of.)
On this CD, what stands out besides the obvious hits, are the drum riff on "Bouncing Babies" and "The Great Dominion" which has an early, mournful sound compared to the track right after it, a Phase 2 song, "The Greatness & Perfection of Love". At first listen, the latter seems like an extension of the former, but then you can hear the change when Julian Cope starts singing. It's lighter. "Sunspots" is a quirky and pop-py track and the end of "Reynard the Fox" is what I would most compare to some creepy Nick Cave stuff. (Recall that the Birthday Party disbanded and reformed as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds during this Phase 2.) This is very different from the track immediately following it, "World Shut Your Mouth", and in fact, "World" is the first track of Phase 3, the period of MTV play. (If not for MTV, most of us would never have heard The Teardrop Explodes.)
I think that put into its proper musical framework, this is an important compilation, You won't find these songs elsewhere really, barring owning all of the discs. When one 'closes one's eyes and thinks of England', besides the Beatles, one should think of Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, Bauhaus, and the Teardrop Explodes. "Safesurfer," the nearly-psychedelic last track on this compilation, should make the connection for you.
In reference to one preceding reviewer: regarding the "gay-ness" of the songs, well, music has changed. Bands didn't used to growl the way they do now. Perhaps we have Metallica, early death metal and hard core to thank for that, I'm not sure, but remember, most of that morphed out of the earlier punk of this period, (or even earlier, if you want to get technical.) Also, I'm female: Julian Cope, all slung up tight in black and wrapped around his mic stand was a pretty hot sight!

4 out of 5 stars Never heard anything quite like this.......2006-07-30

I first heard Julian Cope via his stoner-rock combo Brain Donor, and when I went to check out his solo stuff, I was expecting something along those lines. Boy, was I in for a surprise! The stuff on this album could probably be best described as glossy new-wave studio pop. You could even say that it is, to use the parlance of our times, kind of gay. Ironically enough, its the gayest song on the album, the ethereal "China Doll" that is probably my favorite. Ordinarily, such a description would be a deterrent to me, as I tend to go for harder stuff with a little bit of grungy edge to it.

Cope's music has a distinctly quirky, whimsical quality to it, slightly reminiscent of the Flaming Lips or perhaps Peter Gabriel. There is not much brooding anger on the surface, and you could even say that his better songs are propelled by a sort of naive innocence. He has quite a flair for singing in harmony, as well as for dense, layered arrangements that seem nonetheless to leave space between the many parts.

To be fair, I've only owned this album for a few weeks, so I still expect to have some of the material here grow on me in the future. Having said that, tracks 9-15 are some of the most sublime, gorgeous pop songs I've heard in recent years. "China Doll" is an especially great ballad. "Charlotte Anne" is a funky synth pop number with very subtle layering of sonic textures. The chorus of "World Shut Your Mouth" goes "put your head back in the clouds and shut your mouth...", and upon hearing it for the very first time I was struck by what a great line that is. "Trampolene" is head-bobbingly catchy, as is the boisterous "Spacehopper".

The rest of album hasn't really clicked with me yet, but my budding fascination with this guy seems to give me confidence that I will learn to love it one day yet.

4 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2005-06-25

Floored Genius is a great compilation of solo Cope and Teardrop Explodes. While I highly recommend it there are some songs that are pretty poor (old British new wave crap). The opening track "Reward" is worth the price of the cd alone though rest assured there are a lot of great tunes on this one.

4 out of 5 stars A few great tunes, but generally disappointing...........2003-03-22

I bought this CD after hearing three of the songs that appear on it ("World Shut Your Mouth," "Trampolene," and "Charlotte Anne"), thinking that Julian Cope must be a true musical genius to have penned and recorded such inspired pieces--and thus concluding that his greatest hits CD must overflow with more of the same. Unfortunately, the three aforementioned tunes are the clear highlight of the collection, and, to my ear, only two or three of the remaining cuts even come close to them. The early material from The Teardrop Explodes is pretty forgettable for anyone who doesn't associate it with the time and place whence it arose, and my pop sensibilities, so satisfied by the three aforementioned tunes, make the later material somewhat unpalatable.

5 out of 5 stars He comes from another planet, baby.......2001-08-13

I pity the poor kids these days, the music lovers of that generation! Tens of albums (yeah, yeah, cd's...) going out every day... every 18 years old got a music label in his parents' garage, making sounds that no one will ever hear. 10 years ago, when I bought my music (yeah, yeah, vinyl albums) there was limited access, so we got the good and the bad, but most important, we got the good! I checked out Julian Cope' Floored Genius, because I forgot the name of one of the songs... and I was amazed and ashamed to discover that it only has 1-2 reviews! So I'm doing it for the sake of my generation, telling you, asking you to check this one out. I know how hard is to go 10-20 years back in time and trace those marbles, but you can't afford to miss this one: I'll try to make a long story short: Julian Cope was born in England, where he still lives today, and in 1979, he formed a group name teardrop Explodes, the band did well in the post punk era in England at that time, and put out some of the best songs and records of that genre. If you want, the teardrop explodes were the important link between the Sex Pistols and the Smiths. Later on, Cope moved on and continued in a career of his own, producing unbelievable albums, one at the time. When I think of it, I can't really think of one album by the teardrop explodes, or as solo artist that doesn't contain at least 50% of great songs. The album "Floored Genius" is a very good collection of those years, as a group and as a solo artist. There are not enough words that I can use to tell you how good this collection is nor can I point its highlights, because it's all-good! For those of you who are interested in something more than Blink 182, who want to know where is it all comes from: Do yourself a favor, buy this one and change your life!

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

This CD looks like basically a compilation of "Interstellar Stomp" and "Czar Wars". I own both of those and I can say that this is by far and away the best surf rock I've ever heard. This stuff is as far beyond bands like The Ventures as are the heavens above the Earth.

I've found through listening to a good amount of surf instrumental rock that band either master the energy or the melody, but not both. That is, they are either a high-energy frenzy of notes (think Man or Astro Man), or they craft melodies and play them deliberately (The Ventures), but the Space Cossacks have merged out-of-this-world energy with melodies. There is a variation of tempo and mood as one listens to a Space Cossacks album that I've just never heard from any other surf rock band.

No throwaway stuff on Space Cossacks CD's. Each track is a star with a unique beauty and energy of it's own in a greater universe of music.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Awesome.......2006-08-14

If you like bands like Los Straitjackets and the Ventures, you'll love the Space Cossacks. They're a great instrumental band.

In Native American mythology, Coyote Oldman is a trickster. It's also a long-lived duo that takes Native American flutes and sends them through prairie cathedrals on wings of digital reverb, delays, and harmonization. Michael Graham Allen makes the flutes and plays them along with Barry Stramp, who routes the flutes' windblown melodies through a maze of effects. Their music is born in the moment, reflecting and refracting through the many mirrored images of flutes that bounce back at them through the processing.

In Beauty I Walk is a collection of their work from 1986 through 1995 and it's a perfect way to become immersed in the sound of this unusual group. It includes "Night Forest," a song that shows their Native American influences and ends up with "Compassion," featuring Japanese soprano Hui Cheng. They don't play Native American music, but their slow-motion melodies seem born from the American plains. --John Diliberto

I found this group's website in an article on smudging (space cleansing sage ritual). A moment later I was listening to a few of their songs on ITunes and was blown away. I sat there for a very long time, just listening to one song after another and feeling so good. What a pleasurable, pleasing journey. After this experience I just can't imagine anyone NOT being affected by this music in one way or another. It's **that** good.

Coyote Oldman should now be recognized by all for the wonderful, peaceful music which they give to us. This anthology is remarkable for sounding not like a rehash of the past, but as another step or sequence in the sacred circle of a musical journey at once intimate and universal.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of electronic pop.......2005-05-05

Though I can quibble about some of the cuts selected, I must give this collection five stars for getting this material onto CD. (A lot of people don't have record players these days.) Martin Denny's version of the theme from Midnight Cowboy may be as good as the original and Popcorn is a classic. I'd mention who sampled E.V.A., but I don't want to violate. If you can find the full albums these songs are from in any format I suppose you could pass, otherwise this is a must-have disc.

One more thing, I did not get the quip about Morris Jennings in the liner notes. His playing on Moog Groove is incredible.

3 out of 5 stars A Contrived and Forced Look at a Fascinating Genre.......2002-11-28

I suppose if you've never ever heard of a moog record this would be a decent place to start. My feeling from listening to the album is that it was compiled by an MTV VJ or turned about by the fad machine associated with MTV...
The person who stated that it was essentially a Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley copilation was absolutely correct. Thats what makes this record so bad...Perry and Kingsley were pioneers, but they made the bulk of their electronic music before the moog(on things like the Ondes-Martenot that you never hear of anymore)and a good portion of their music is more important because of their innovative use of tape-loops in pop music...not their use of the moog. Check out perrey and kingsley's "The In Sound from Way Out" to see what I mean.
Martin Denny is on here, god knows why...he made about one moog album, and it was alot of his most boring stuff. His records are still all over thrift stores, go dig if you're interested. Hugo Montenegro was great, and I believe his moog album is still in print, if not, its on ebay for not alot. Command Records has two of the best "greatest of" albums for this genre: Electronic Eclections with Dick Hyman(whom I consider to be tops for all around cheesiness) and Richard Hayward and Walter Sears who did a version of Girl From Ipanema that gives me chills every time. As far as contemporaries, check out the Moog Cookbook-Ye Olde Spaceband, and AIR-Moon Safari...from the 90s, and still a great example of moog related music.
In closing, if you're interested in this genre, more power too you, but this is a novelty collection for rich kids who'll go on to whatever gets fashionable next week. I'm not an expert but i've got a collection of a couple hundred records, you can find alot more interesting, higher quality examples of Moog Records.

3 out of 5 stars Not all it could be and I ain't biting.......2002-06-14

Though I'd certainly describe this as a good, fun CD, it lacks extremely necessary artists in the Moog (rhymes with Pogue, like the band the Pogues) era. As described by Disinformation Records representative Richard Metzger in the CD's liner notes, those who know their Moog will be severely disappointed in this collection of classics. You do get a good number of out-of-print hits from artists whose records would cost extreme amounts on auction sites and collector conventions, but there's no diversity and some of the best artists are completely absent. There is no Bruce Haack, (though he is briefly mentioned in the liners (where his name is misspelled!!)), no Wendy Carlos (or Walter Carlos!!), not even any Raymond Scott, the original creator of the prototype Moog later popularlized. Many of the tracks included are covers of Hollywood tunes and classical arrangements, and the last track is a completely worthless Fatboy Slim remix of E.V.R. Why is it included on a 60's and 70's hits CD? Who knows, maybe he's a shareholder...

Anyways, here's a list of all the performers as they appear on the CD:
    1)Hot Butter
    2)Perrey-Kingsley
    3)Jean Jacques Perrey
    4)Richard Hayman
    5)Martin Denny
    6)Perrey-Kingsley
    7)Gil Trythall
8)Enoch Light and the Light Brigade
    9)Perrey Kingsley
    10)Armando Travaioli
    11)Perrey-Kingsley
    12)Elektrik Cokernut
    13)Armando Travaioli
    14)Elektrik Cokernut
    15)First Moog Quartet
    16)Hugo Montenegro and his Orchestra
    17)Dick Hyman
    18)First Moog Quartet
    19)Jean Jacques Perrey (remixed)

It's also helpful to note that many of these groups were actually organized by Perrey and/or Kingsley. In effect, this is nearly a best of Perrey and Kingsley CD! The label rep goes to all the trouble of claiming he wants to reissue OOP and expensive classic tunes, but he only has like 3 artists on here, not to mention the lame Fatboy Slim remix.

Despite all the huge flaws in this release, it's still a fun listen. There are only one or two tracks on here that aren't worth the time, and even the covers are fun. I'd recommend it to those of you who aren't huge Moog fans, but not to the hardcore followers (though you guys probably know not to buy it already). For those who are still learning ot beauty of the Moog synth, I suppose I'd recommend this. The actual records are far too expensive now, so go ahead and pick up the cheap comp and see what you think before shelling out major cash...

    4 out of 5 stars Appreciation..........2002-04-12

Just a note to the previous reviewer... *all* appreciation is in the mind, not 'in the sound'. The sound is heard in the mind. That said, some will appreciate this stuff and some will not. In my opinion, the music isn't even important... the Moog (and the artists who created and played these sounds) are the stars of the show. Listening to this music is like watching a (pretty bad) movie starring a great actor... In my opinion, the unique and magical sound of the Moog (when played by people who know what they're doing) can redeem the worst, cheesiest song and make it into a masterpiece.

If you like that unique analog Moog sound, you'll probably like this -- it's that simple. But please, don't buy it mainly for the music -- likely you'll be disappointed. If you buy it because you love the sound of the Moog, you're sure to be rewarded.

2 out of 5 stars It is 2002 and it is time for something new............2002-01-12

    .........and this is not it!
The 2 cuts that stand out are Popcorn by Hot Butter and E.V.R. by Jean Jacques Perrey. The rest is a pile headache inducing kitsch. The appreciation of this quaint style of music lies purely in the mind and not in it's sound. No matter what is claimed, this stuff did not influence Krafwerk and should be sent back to the rubbish bin as it is begining to smell. Wendy Carlos was a pioneer on many fronts, but Bach's music is what makes her recordings last. The tracks included here are not even composition they are just pastiche.

IF you like Celtic music, you'll enjoy this. It's not spectacular, but it's definitely soothing and well-done. The Thistle & Shamrock is an excellent radio show, and this is a good collection of songs that have been featured on it.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Voices and Melodies.......2000-05-30

This CD is worth it just for Maura O'Connell's version of "The Water Is Wide". It makes my heart stop evertime I hear it. The other songs are also wonderful - complex and soothing.

5 out of 5 stars It should be a classic!.......2005-07-26

I've recently become a die-hard fan of the Gin Blossoms, and in the process, learned of this CD. What's not to like about this CD? It's packed with great songs that to me are just as good as some of the Gin Blossoms best stuff such as "Time 4U", "Up & Down", "Little Stars", "Places That Are Gone", & "Radio Summer". Basically the only bad track is the last one, so skip it. Everything else on this CD is likeable. Don't hesitate to buy this album. You'll love it!

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME CD!.......2004-07-11

Like the GAS GIANTS CD...this was recorded at ROBIN WILSON's MAYBERRY STUDIOS in ARIZONA and has an EXCELLENT Sound and this is a solid group of songs. ROBIN's singing performance makes it and SCOTTY JOHNSON'S Solo on track 5 is a HIGHLIGHT! If you like GREAT music BUY this CD!

5 out of 5 stars BASICALLY THE 2ND GAS GIANTS CD!! ROBIN WILSON AT HIS BEST!.......2003-09-19

To those not in the know, this album is the followup to the Gas Giants' 1999 debut/only CD "From Beyond The Back Burner", and the Gin Blossoms (BIG YAY!!) Add Scott Johnson on guitar (from the Gin Blossoms/Roger Clyne + The Peacemakers) and there ya go. The only thing is they are hiding under a cartoon disguise here, sorta like Blur doing the Gorillaz project. I found out about this project/CD at the NYC Gin Blossoms gig at BB Kings, which was terrific as expected. Robin told me about the CD, and it was being sold among the merch, so of course I bought it, along with Jesse Valenzuela's solo CD "Tunes Young People Will Enjoy" (AWESOME!!), and the CD debut of the Gin Blossoms' indie debut "Dusted" (BIG YAY!!) I flipped when Robin told me this, and flipped many times more when I put it on, woohoo!!

Think CLASSIC GIN BLOSSOMS, with that Gas Giants edge, but even MORE POWERPOP SUGAR PILED ON!!! Yes, that is a VERY good thing. If you are a TRUE POWERPOP ENTHUSIAST, this POPPIN WHEELIES CD is for you!! I mean, a cartoon group is a perfect powerpop vehicle, along the lines of the Vandalias, Archies, Powerpuff Girls, Banana Splits, Josie + The Pussycats, BUT here, the music is Robin Wilson and his pals, and pure magic!!

There are 11 tunes here, the whole shebang PRODUCED by our hero Robin, recorded at his recording studio, Mayberry, in Tempe, AZ, ALL LEAD VOCALS by our Robin (so you KNOW this will be a gem, and indeed, this is CLASSIC ROBIN!!), lead guitar and bass by DAN HENZERLING from Robin's Gas Giants, drums by PHILIP RHODES from both the Gin Blossoms + Gas Giants, plus SCOTTY JOHNSON on lead guitar on 1 track!!!! AND to further entice fellow powerpop enthusiasts, there are (count em) THREE TOMMY KEENE COVERS (including a FANTASTIC take on "Places That are Gone")!!! Those along with 5 new Robin originals!! Toss in 3 other covers (by Jeff Moss, Robin pal and collaborator Steve French, who plays lead guitar on 2 songs here, and Owen Vyse), and you have the much-overlooked Poppin Wheelies!!

Now, the gyst of this cartoon concept superhero "band", is they are a powerpop 4-piece (Tommy on lead vocals + rhythm guitar-looks like a blue Rickenbacker, plus he looks like Tommy Keene, Danny on drums + the driver/remote controller of their "Galacta-Van", Tennessee on bass, and Otis on lead guitar-a Les Paul-with Cracky, his pet parrot + band mascot), who travel from planet to planet in their GV and play their cool powerpop tunes to pop-loving aliens and robots. Now, as in most cartoons, they have enemies and competition in a 4-piece robot band called "The Techno-Pops" (who have 1 Robin-co-written tune on the CD called "Spaced Out" and sound like a weird hybrid of Suicide and Kraftwerk with some pop tossed in), and their controller/boss "The Black Widow Commandress".

It's a cool concept, well-executed, with neat colourful graphics, well-thought-out characters, + 11 amazing powerpop tunes by Robin + company (fave tunes here are "Alone Again" and "Danger Girl", which rank as high as the best Gin Blossoms and Gas Giants tunes, seriously!!) All that is needed is an actual Poppin Wheelies cartoon broadcast on the Cartoon Network, which COULD generate a cult following among animation fans and hip college students/twenty + thirty-somethings. At least the website is cool, which has great graphics, animation, and fleshes out the characters in more detail. Check it out: www.poppinwheelies.com, if it's still up that is, the CD came out in 2000, and I'm the first reviewer, in 2003!!!

I will be spreading the word to all Gin Blossoms/Gas Giants/Tempe scene fans, as none seem to be aware of this CD at all!! And they should, it's very cool and very worthy, and classic Robin Wilson!!! YAY about the Gin Blossoms reunion too, woohoo!!!
