This two-CD set won't cause you to throw out your copy of Fillmore East, but it is at very least a worthy companion to that 1971 classic. Recorded the previous year at the famed Cincinnati venue (but not released until 1991), Ludlow catches the band in the moments just before their peak. Some of the material will be familiar to fans, but this collection adds gems such as John Lee Hooker's "Dimples" and the blues classic "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town" to their recorded repertoire. And if you thought the 33-minute "Mountain Jam" on Eat a Peach was extensive, you need to hear Ludlow's 44-minute version, which comprises the entire second CD. --Marc Greilsamer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Some rare ones here.......2007-04-03

A great live set from 1970 here with the original Allman Brothers Band. Highlights include a live "Dreams", a rare Duane vocal on "Dimples" and a killer "Hoochie Coochie Man" with a fine Berry Oakley lead vocal. Disc 2 contains a lengthy "Mountian Jam" with a very good drum duet. A performance that due to unfortunate events cannot be duplicated so enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars A look at the beginning.......2006-03-08

As has been pointed out countless times in the reviews - this is a snapshot of the band in the beginning. Soon they would go on to make history at the Fillmore East. All ABB fans know the story about how they went into the those shows with something to prove (resulting in epic success) but on this night in 1970 they show how hard they must have worked every night prior to hitting it big. I fall into the group of fans who loves the 44 minute mountain jam. It's a real monster! If you already have the fillmore sessions and the greatest hits then give this a try. You might be really surprised.

4 out of 5 stars Any Duane Is Good Duane............2006-02-20

Recorded nearly a year before AT FILLMORE EAST, LUDLOW GARAGE captures the original Allman Brothers Band in its early days - if a career of just over two years could be considered thus divisible - exploring a relatively straightforward rock and blues mode which frequently hints at the transcendent heights they would soon achieve onstage.
Fans will recognize most or all of the tunes here, of course; but as always the songs themselves are simply launch pads for the Brothers' boundless flights, which even at this stage were quite possibly the greatest jams rock music had to offer. The signature "Statesboro Blues" here gains a lengthy slide guitar coda by Duane Allman which I've never heard elsewhere; and "Mountain Jam," while not nearly as astounding as the version on EAT A PEACH, nevertheless impresses with its sheer mass, clocking in at a remarkable forty-four non-stop minutes. Other treats are the rather rare "Dreams" and "Every Hungry Woman," two songs from the band's eponymous debut album, the former featuring eerily beautiful slide work from Duane and the latter a tight, rocking ensemble performance. A churning "Hoochie Coochie Man" lets the drum team of Butch Trucks and J. Johanny Johannson cook up some thunder, while "I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town," another seldom-heard blues cover, spotlights Brother Gregg's fine vocals.
While the sound quality on LUDLOW isn't equal to that of most official live releases, it's strongly recommended for anyone who's gotten into the music of this phenomenal and sadly underrecorded group of musicians. The Fillmore shows (and the recordings made from them) were undoubtedly superior, but there's plenty here you can't get there.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Fillmore Concerts, but Still Great!!!!.......2005-10-14

Not as great sonically as The Fillmore concerts, but still an outstanding live album. This one and The Fillmore should be in any ABB collection. One disc 1 you get an 8 minute version of Statesboro Blues, over 10 minutes of Dreams an outstanding cover John Lee Hooker's Dimples, Berry Oakley doing lead vocals on Hoochie Coochie Man. On disc 2 is the 44 min epic Mountain Jam which I absolutely love, I think it's better than the Fillmore Concerts version. Like one reviewer said this disc could stand to be re-mastered and hopefully with extra songs. Even if it doesn't get the re-mastered treatment you should definately buy this.

5 out of 5 stars Great raw early live document of the Brothers...........2005-08-18

My favorite period of the ABB's music is the original 1969-1974 lineup (minus Duane and Berry when they died in those years). Live, their recordings from this era cannot be beat by any other incarnation. That being said, Live at Ludlow Garage 1970 is a raw early document of the Brothers just flat out playing! Check out the 8-minute Statesboro Blues, the incendiary versions of Dreams, Hoochie Coochie Man, and Trouble No More, not to mention live rarity Dimples, Every Hungry Woman, and I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town. The show concludes with a 44-minute version of Mountain Jam. While I don't listen to this song every time I put this album on, it's a great version that really cooks and is worth a listen every once and a while. There isn't a single weak track on this album and the sound, while raw, is loud, clear, and great. Essential listening for any ABB fan or fan of great late 1960s/early 1970s rock music.

Album Description

Before a teenaged Al Anderson began his 22-year run with the well-loved and prolific NRBQ, he had The Wildweeds. Big Al, as he is known, wrote most of this collection of scorching rock and soul-influenced songs. This definitive lineup of The Wildweeds never put out an LP. Thus these tracks - many never released - form a great "lost" album of the 1960s.

For Confidential Recordings' in-depth package, Big Al not only lent his full cooperation, but also provided access to his personal collection of photographs and memorabilia. In addition, Wildweeds historian Richard Brukner interviewed other original band members and scores of family, friends and fans. His resulting sixteen pages of liner notes tell the complete story of The Wildweeds.

That story is also told by the music. At the collection's core are the eight songs that comprise the entirety of The Weeds' four single records released on Chess' Cadet label. Six previously unreleased tracks round out the set, including a searing cover of The Soul Sisters classic "I Can't Stand It" and "Fuzzy Wuzzy," a red-hot, fuzzed-out original instrumental. This compilation also debuts "No Good To Cry" in stereo and instrumental versions re-mixed and re-mastered from the original multi-track tapes by original producer Thomas "Doc" Cavalier.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wildweeds Compilation.......2005-11-25

To be fair, the Wildweeds were more than just Al Anderson. While "Big Al" appeared to be the driving force behind the Weeds, the other members were certainly his equal, especially Ray Zeiner and Bob Dudek.

This is the 3rd Weeds compilation I've owned and it is without a doubt, the best one. All of the Weeds' soulful singles and "B" sides are included along with other great tunes that only folks lucky enough to see them live in the late 60's got to hear. There is none of that country crap that they did during their decline, which is included on the other compilations; no need to skip ahead to the next song.

If you enjoy other white soul groups such as the Young Rascals, you will certainly enjoy the Wildweeds.

5 out of 5 stars What a treasure!!!!!.......2005-06-30

What a talent... I knew this 35 years ago... hearing these audio clips was an experience! Just buy it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another long overdue, overlooked gem.......2004-01-15

Everyone in the Hartford, CT. area circa the mid 60s knew and loved Al Anderson and the Wildweeds. This material represents Anderson's blues and R&B roots versus his later rockabilly and country inclinations with NRBQ and as a songwriter for hire.
The single No Good to Cry was the pinnacle of the band's short-lived career, but there are another half dozen original gems on this fine CD.

Album Description

"Fans of The Walkmen and Broken Social Scene will love this band, which employs some of the same held-note meditations on melody and harmony ... Shaky Hands is the best rock band in Portland." -- WILLAMETTE WEEK

"There's this band called Shaky Hands ... I still haven't met those guys, so we have no affiliation, but I hope we will be affiliated soon, in the future. I think eventually we'll probably have to play a show together. They played a house show a couple months ago, and it was fucking awesome." -- Hutch Harris, The Thermals, Pitchfork

Holocene Music is beyond stoked to present the debut full-length from Portland jangly-pop wunderkinds the Shaky Hands. Sliding bouncy go-go beats under shambling guitars and reedy, swooning vocals, Shaky Hands make the kind of catchy, soulful indie rock tailor-made for brokedown car stereos and river-rat boomboxes. This debut album's thirteen tracks glow with a sloppily romantic warmth that's equal parts summer sunshine and candlelit mellow, pre-party buzz and scruffy day-after fuzziness. The result is a fully formed and confident debut; a big-hearted, starry-eyed bear hug of a record full of youthful energy and tumbling vigor.

Shaky Hands formed in Portland in Fall 2003. The group began as a three-piece, with Nick Delffs (Castanets) playing guitar and singing, Colin Anderson playing drums, and Paul Culp on bass. Following Culp's departure in 2004, Mayhaw Hoons and his hair joined the band, soon followed by second guitarist Jeff Lehman. In 2006 the band recorded this debut at Portland's Sidecar Studios before bringing on Nathan Delffs as an official member that spring. Now five strong, Shaky Hands is a visceral, life-affirming live experience that will totally make you hug the person standing next to you.

5 out of 5 stars Not a bad song on the entire CD.......2007-06-10

Low key jangly pop/rock with a few well placed upbeat sections. I read another reviewer say that this reminded him of what an early 80's R.E.M. / Violent Femmes fusion might have sounded like. Only better because this exists and that never did.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All their best singles compiled on one album............2003-10-31

Anyone expecting `The Hives', to play songs of slow poignant melancholy, will be sorely disappointed and well advised to look elsewhere, as this is about as Fast & Furious as it gets...and perfected magnificently by the rousing, passionate hollering's of singer/frontman "Howlin' Pelle Almqvist", whom screams and howls his way through every song, with the subtlety of a cricket ball smashing through a glass conservatory....and guitars rocking & Drums thumping with volume set to `Max'. And its surprisingly its actually very uplifting, with track 3 "Supply & Demand", clocking in at just under 2:27, and is as bone fide an anthem as Blur's "Song 2" is considered...and its not a one trick pony either, as "Hate to Say I Told You So", "Die, All Right!" & "Main Offender" are particularly well crafted Rock Songs that do a tremendous job of holding your attention completely. Obliviously this is not an album for when quieter music is needed....but Who Cares!??, this isn't what the band are trying to achieve, its all about foot to the floor furious Jams...and urging their listeners to `Nod their heads aggressively' (and maybe punch their hands into the air), and very few people can match (let alone surpass) these guys when it comes to that.....essential.

4 out of 5 stars Relentless Sonic Attack.......2002-11-25

The Hives are the best musical export out of Sweden since ABBA (sorry, Roxette). This mini-"best of" album is a hotch-potch of 4 tracks from 2000's "Veni Vidi Vicious" album (which only this year gained acceptance in the US), with album tracks of 1997's "Barely Legal" CD and a variety of singles and B-sides.

Clocking in at 28 min., "Your Favorite New Band" sums up very nicely where the Hives are at this point: take-no-prisoners, all out sonic assault, short songs that make rock so great, check out "Hate To Say I Told You So", "a.k.a. IDIOT", and "Outsmarted". The best song, though, is the delicious B-side "The Hives Are Law You Are Crime" (an instrumental no less) which puts us all in place!

Please don't confuse the Hives with the Vines! The Hives are what rock is about (not that the Vines arent), and this compilation is a great introdution. Now when will they come out with a bona-fide follow-up to "Veni Vidi Vicious"?

4 out of 5 stars What Rock n' Roll really is.......2002-09-07

I don't actually own this Cd but I borrowed if off a friend only recently and let we tell you, It was a horrible feeling when I had to return it. Although I was constantly humming the tunes in my head for days I was still left with an empty space. Trust me, if you like Pure Rock then these guys will be right up your alley. A mixture of Garage fuelled with Punk whilst somehow never straying away from their roots. Sure the tracks may be a little unoriginal with structure and not all the songs are great but who cares. It's Rock n' Roll at it's finest and I haven't seen a band this exciting in a long time. Q magazine voted them the top band to see before you die. Just listen to untutored youth if you need a taste of pure adrenelin. Or maybe you need to just mellow out and in that case try the instrumental The Hives Are Law, You Are Crime.
The standout of the Cd for me is Die, All Right. I don't know what it is but this track ignites me and makes me really want to get up and rock.

Overall this album is an excellent investment if you are new to The Hives. Buy it and hear the future of Rock Music.

5 out of 5 stars Pure punk.......2002-07-26

I got this as a gift, and it is the best disc I've heard in a long time. I was in my teens in the late 1970s and am well familiar with the punk of that time and its influences. If you like 60s garage punk, Raw-Power era Stooges, early Damned, the Dead Boys, and the Saints, you will like this. These guys manage to tie together the best of past punk sounds into one awesome new sound.

4 out of 5 stars Demand these Main Offenders.......2002-04-16

The Hives are simply a blast. Rock and Role Models. They wear tight suits and play tight three chord sonic pop. I got a copy of Vendi Vidi Vicious and immediately fell for "Main Offender" "Die, Alright" "Hate To Say I Told You So" and my personal workout fav "Supply & Demand". So when I heard that Alan McGee at Poptones was putting out a best of compilation based on their lps and eps I was eager to get a copy. I am glad I did. All I have say is "Untutored Youth". That is the most exciting song I heard in a long time. If you are looking for some straight up rock and roll old school style with some very clever lyrics then give these guys a try.

Do the Supersuckers have what it takes to back up their rather ballsy claim that they are world's best rock & roll band? Depends how you take your rock. If you're looking for introspective lyrics, sweeping guitar artistry, original arrangements, and topnotch production values, keep your REMs, Smashing Pumpkins and Radioheads to yourself. But if you're a whiskey-fueled, tattooed, Satan-worshiping, cowboy-hat-wearing hellion, then the Supersuckers are your kings and this is the greatest album of all time. These are 27 prime cuts from the 'Suckers catalog, from the prescient "Coattail Rider" to such classics as "How to Maximize Your Kill Count," "She's My Bitch," "Ron's Got the Cocaine," and a cover of Willie Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" (complete with Willie contributing voice and a blistering acoustic guitar lead). So the question still remains: Are the Supersuckers the greatest rock & roll band in the world? Think you'd find Willie on a Radiohead album? Hell no. That's the only vote this punk needs to count. --Tod Nelson

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars they must've been high.......2006-03-02

We can only pray that someday America will awaken from its cultural slumber and realize that the Supersuckers and Rocket From the Crypt were two of the best yet criminally underrated rock bands of the 1990s (and early 00s). Both brought punk back to its rock 'n' roll roots with tongue firmly lodged in cheek, and in an era shoe-gazing whiny emo rockers they put on a damn good live show. The Supersuckers' Sacrlicious Sounds Of .. . and their "country" album, Must've Been High, are classics waiting to be rediscovered, so go out and get them now so you can lie to all your lame-ass hipster friends and tell them you were way into the Supersuckers way back when. Or get this one, which includes most of the best songs from those two albums plus their earlier punk stuff and the ironic genius of their cover of "Dead Homiez."

4 out of 5 stars good enough.......2003-07-12

how good is it? good enough to get me to completely forget a pointless, dead-end crush for a few hours. i think i wore out the CD listening to the first verse of "Supersucker Drive-By Blues" about a bazillion times -...hilarious!

keep music evil.

3 out of 5 stars Shout bamalama.......2003-04-01

Lugging an obnoxiously long declaration for a title "How the Supersuckers Became the Greatest Rock & Roll Band in the World" is a compilation of some of the Supersuckers' finest moments. The term "finest moments" may lack any objective relevance though. The Supersuckers excel at a sort of tongue-in-cheek bamalama, a hammering hybrid of garage punk and Motorhead metal, that can quite easily make it hard to distinguish one sonic assault from another. The exceptions, predictably, are the standouts. Versions of Ice Cube's "Dead Homiez" and Willie Nelson's "Bloody Mary Morning" drastically change the sonic palate. Steve Earle joins the band for a version of "Before They Make Me Run" that cuts the Stones to shreds. The tracks off their "country" album ("Must've Been High") also help break up the one dimensional rockin'. But overall, if it's high octane, no-frills rawk you're seeking, you could do far worse.

Not a big fan of greatest hits - would have liked an all-out live album more, there is really no excuse for not having each album individually. A supersuckers greatest hits is really rather redundant, they've been great for years. I saw em live a while back though, and it does look like they could use the extra money.

I'm a french girl leaving in L.A and I didn't know Isabelle Antena before this compilation. Not only her track (the opening one) is the best of the CD , but I discovered her best of album (l'alphabet du plaisir) and she's one of the greatest bossa singer I've ever heard.A real diva.

5 out of 5 stars Good CD........2002-06-11

While I profess to know very little about music, I think I have good taste. I love this cd, every track from start to finish seems to find the right blend between groovy/relaxing. Would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2002-03-25

Another one of those trip-hop/jazz compilations that just won't leave the CD player. An eclectic blend of smooth cuts from Thievery Corp, Nightmares On Wax, and others, perfect for coming down from a fast night of drinking too much and sobering out. The song by Cool Blue (track 9, not 10) is just so chill, it sends shivers and Dub Tractor's "104 Dub" has that ambient groove to it...way cool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2002-03-12

This CD has been in almost constant rotation in the CD player at our house since purchase. It flows really well, each song is very different, but very interesting, and they all seem to complement each other. Can't wait to try the other ESL offerings.

4 out of 5 stars Sizzles, fizzles, then sizzles........2002-02-06

I was interested in this track as I knew of Batu and some of the other artists featured. But to be honest, the only tracks I listen to on this album are the first two. The Isabelle Antena track is incredibly smooth while the Batu track seems to teleport you back in time to Brazil in the 70's early 80's. But from then on up for a while the album goes into a 70's sort of lounge feel, which isn't really bad considering that's the way the album's supposed to go. Just not my cup of tea.

So if you're looking for something like the first two tracks, where are heavy Bossa Nova/tropical feel, you get it in the first two tracks only. Otherwise I'd recommend Jet Society instead - and if you have that, Boss-a-Troniq (1+2), Brazilectro (1+2) or Hedkandi's Serve Chilled Volume 3. The rest of this album is solid with some ups - notably Shantel and Thievery Corporation's own track in it.

By the time Columbia released NRBQ's self-titled debut in 1970, the band was already having fractious dealings with their label (a pattern that would become all too familiar over the course of their nearly 40-year career). This live date at Cincinnati's Ludlow Garage has circulated clandestinely among fans for some time, and is finally being released in stunning clarity. The 18 songs are a veritable tour through the vast musical landscape that captured the band's imagination. Besides originals, there are covers of songs by Sun Ra, Little Richard, Carla Bley, Wilson Pickett, and Rahsaan Roland Kirk, among others. NRBQ's sense of both tradition and invention is remarkable for musicians who were in their early 20s at the time. They were accidental iconoclasts, refusing to adhere to any of the expectations of the day, honoring their musical inclinations at every turn. It's also amazing to hear the sound of the audience slowly gather momentum as they're transformed from baffled newcomers to fans. --David Greenberger

5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2006-11-23

Wow what a find. The recording is not sterling (it was 1970) but the performances were. You forget just how good Steve Ferguson, Frank Gadler and Tom Staley were. I saw this version of NRBQ a number of times and they instantly became my favorite group next to the Fabs (no disrespect to the more recent versions, they're all great). Wacky, Wild, Rockin, Groovin, Swingin and Harmonizing, these guys had it all. All I want for Xmas/Hannukah is a DVD version of this cause visually these guys were something else also. What a shame they're presently not performing or recording. Cmon guys the world needs NRBQ more then ever.

4 out of 5 stars Best of "New Favorite Band".......2005-03-29

Let it be said that when "Your New Favorite Band" was first released, it was far too early for the Hives to have a "best of" album -- they only had EPs and two albums in the bag. But it is a good sampler of their best songs, and a good introduction to their rough, raw brand of garage punk.

"Your New Favorite Band" takes four tracks from their breakout album, "Veni Vidi Vicious," four from their debut predecessor "Barely Legal," and finally four from their EP work. These songs are almost undeniably the best of the batch, like the roaring "A.K.A I-D-I-O-T," "Mad Man" or "Main Offender."

What these songs all have in common is an adrenaline-powered rawness, and a fast-paced energy that most garage and/or punk bands try to achieve, but few do. Okay, they don't have the most original sound in the world. They have, instead, vibrancy and a lack of musical pretension -- they are influenced by bands like the Stooges, but they don't wear those on their sleeves.

The kinetic riffs give the group half their sound. Each song is a roiling mass of percussion, guitar and bass, endearingly nasty and very entertaining. Howlin' Pelle Almqvist provides the other -- he sounds like he's literally foaming at the mouth when he sings stuff like "Mad Man." He lives up to the "Howlin'" part of his name, definitely.

The DVD that comes with the album is a nice bonus, though hardly necessary. It contains three fairly good music videos for "Hate to Say I Told You So," "Main Offender," and "Die, All Right!", which is a good accompaniment to the hits album but somehow it feels that there could (and should) have been more on the DVD.

"Your New Favorite Band" serves as an effective "best of" album, although the band seemed too young to have enough for such an album. In a nutshell, it's a great way to revisit the best of these energetic Swedish rockers, or to introduce newbies to them.

5 out of 5 stars Agent Double-O Soul..........2000-05-09

Yet another fantastic release from the ESL crew. Very dubbed out, latin/bossa/world-infused sounds in typcial ESL/Theivery fashion. This is a perfect soundtrack for reclining at night, while sipping your favorite intoxica, of for sneaking about your favorite lounge--white dinner jacket mandatory.

Get this and you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Sonically excellent CD!.......2004-01-31

Summer Of Love Vol. 2 is a nicely mixed selection of trippy pop songs, many of which blared from countless shirt-pocket ALL-TRANSISTOR radios in 1967. What makes this CD unique is that nearly every tune was purposely re-mastered using the original monaural mixes. Sonically, this CD is excellent, having been re-mastered by Bill Inglot who really has an ear for great sound.

3 out of 5 stars Oops, missed a song from my previous review.......1998-08-29

It's me again, the "music fan from California."

I left a song off my list, so just wanted to complete the review:

That Acapulco Gold -- The Rainy Daze. One of those stupid lead-singer-singing-through-a-megaphone ditties. Remember "Winchester Cathedral"? This is like that song, but a thinly-veiled ode to marijuana. Throw-away filler.

3 out of 5 stars Some great stuff, some filler.......1998-08-29

Some of the songs on this album were selections for the terrific original "Nuggets" album, which you'd be lucky to find anymore. However, while "Nuggets" shined throughout, this album is a very mixed bag.

The standouts:

I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night-- The Electric Prunes. A great psychedelic classic, with a bumblebee guitar riff.

Incense and Peppermints -- Strawberry Alarm Clock. A period piece, but still a great single.

Renaissance Fair -- The Byrds. A track from their fantastic "Younger Than Yesterday" album. Great Crosby/McGuinn tune. "I think that maybe I'm dreaming..."

Back On The Street Again -- The Sunshine Company. The best song by this group. Irresistable folk-tinged song with terrific harmony. Very happy sound, but melancholy lyrics.

My World Fell Down -- Sagittarius. This should've been a big hit when it was released. Instead, it's one of those rare gems that any true '60s fan should have. What a cool song. Great harmonies, instrumental parts, very well produced.

A Whiter Shade Of Pale -- Procol Harum. How can you not like this song? Rolling Stone voted it one of best singles of all time. Sort of "When A Man Loves A Woman" filtered and distorted through "Mr. Bojangles," with a healthy dose of extremely cryptic lyrics thrown in for good measure.

The filler:

Are You Gonna Be There -- The Chocolate Watch Band. So-so sneering Rolling Stones clone.

Epistle To Dippy -- Donovan. Donovan at his most wimpy and precious. Even the geeky song title should tell you something. Ugh! Turn it off!

Love Every Day -- Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart. Well, if you like Peter & Gordon, I guess you'll like this easy-listening stuff. Otherwise....

The Beat Goes On -- Sonny and Cher. As irritating as always.

Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out) -- The Hombres. Amusing back in the '60s as a fun novelty song. Pretty embarrassing and silly now.

Twelve Thirty -- Mamas And Papas. Not one of their best songs.

Let's Live For Today -- The Grassroots. Never cared much for this song (or group).

It's A Happening Thing -- The Peanut Butter Conspiracy. Their one semi-hit. You can tell why they only had one hit.

Six O' Clock -- The Lovin Spoonful. Not one of their best songs.

You can find a lot of the good songs on other albums such as the (subsequent to the original "Nuggets") "Nuggets"-series records that Rhino released. Maybe those will have a better gem-to-filler ratio than this album.

3 out of 5 stars Two Greats and a bunch of Also-Rans.......1998-06-29

The two really great cuts in this collection make it worth owning. That Acapulco Gold by the Rainy Daze and Let It Out (Let it All Hang Out) by the Hombres are true gems of the era. The rest of this stuff is fairly unremarkable.
