5 out of 5 stars Surreal, intriguing, excellent music and recording.......2004-12-27

listening to the music is like enjoying the beautiful surreal movie once again without seeing it. The more I listen, the more I love it - it's the Amercian Dream story, it's the Iggy Pop music, it's the Johnny Depp narrative make it a valuable collectible CD. This is a new version, the recording is excellent.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2003-09-02

This is the album that sounds even better without the Movie.
Goran Bregovic mixed traditional european Folk music with more modern styled instrumental and rock music.with this mix and his talent to make a moving and touching songs he created a masterpiece, delightfull voyage to teh darkest and most mysterious places...Goran added sytnhs, bass, delicate guitar (simmilar a bit to mike Oldfield),and a massive wall of drums...Check out "Dreams","Old home movie","Gunpowder","Dreams" and a huge hit "Tv screen" with Iggy pop on vocals.Definitly one of my Desert-island albums,a must have for all instrumental music fans and for everyone as well!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Versatile Composer.......2003-06-30

As most fans of Bregovic know, he is a versatile composer who blends well contemporary music technology with traditional flavors of eastern European gypsy and still manages to remain above the par of the usual techno-studio corporate music that attempts to stamp the "World Music" label on its own concoctions. "Arizona Dream" doesn't disappoint even the hard to please of Bregovic fans.

5 out of 5 stars An acoustic treasure chest!!!.......2006-11-24

As a longtime fan of Jimmy Somerville, I'd like to personally attest to this being his finest work. I have quite the varied range of musical tastes and this album easily makes my top 10 favorite album list. It is a crime that this CD has not received more airplay. I hope this fact will not prevent record companys from releasing future albums by this wonderful artist.
Do not let the fact that Jimmy sings in falsetto keep you from giving this amazing singer a listen. He is one of the greatest vocalist of our lifetime, with a strong dynamic range. (No I do not know him and I am not related to him.) I am just a huge fan of his vocal styling, who loves the fact his music has matured as he has, without losing a single bit of his vocal strength.

5 out of 5 stars For My Heart is Soft as Silk..........2006-08-04

Having been a fan of Jimmy Somerville and his amazing voice since the 80's, I took a chance on this CD sight unheard and I am BLOWN AWAY! There isn't a bad track on this CD and I'm amazed by the diversity and complete contemporary feel of the work as a whole. I truly believe this is some of the best work Jimmy has ever done. Not many performers can electrify you with the raw sexy power of "Come On" and then make you break out in tears on the very next track "It Still Hurts"! I cranked "Stay" up in my car and it almost shattered a window it's so powerful! This CD flows and spills over you like white hot Mercury and Jimmy's voice is so strong and in top form throughout never missing a note or failing to emote such feeling as I haven't heard from another performer in years. This is definitely a "Love at First Listen" piece of work and every friend I've played it for has gone out and bought a copy the next day. This is truly a masterpiece. Well done Mr. Somerville. I've fallen in love all over again...

5 out of 5 stars The Best CD Ever!.......2005-10-21

This by far is Jimmy's best cd ever! The music is wonderful, and his voice is still beautiful. With great lyrics, and an incredible team producing, mixing, and songwriting this cd, it will be hard to surpass such perfection. You're a credit to the music world, Jimmy, please don't ever stop making music like this.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent record.......2005-10-17

Jimmy sounds as good as ever on this record. His voice is sweet and powerful. Production is awesome.

    5 out of 5 stars falcon beach.......2007-07-02

Track 3, Beautiful Blue, is the song featured in the opening credits of Falcon Beach. This Canadian show ran on ABCFamily the summers of 2006 and 2007.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!!.......2005-03-25

This is the best yet...the kind of CD you can put in, play beginning to end and then do it again and again. As others have noted, "Beautiful Blue" is a classic as is the driving "Dallas". "When You Come Down" is a favorite of mine. I have all the others but there's something more to this. The arrangements do the lyrics complete justice giving extra punch where needed as well as leaving open spaces in other songs allowing the music to breathe. Holly is just one of those rare performers (like Heather Nova) with something magic in her voice that brings the lyrics alive in a way that reaches deep into ones soul. This sounds as good (if not better) two years (and hundreds of plays) after I bought it as it did the first time I heard it on her website. I can't recommend this one enough.

5 out of 5 stars Very good album.......2003-03-29

    ...

This album is also very good. It is a bit more mellow than Stuff. There are some exceptional songs on this record. There are a couple less good ones, but just about every album has a couple.

My favorites are Beautiful Blue and Watching Over You. She has a very pretty voice that can also be very powerful when she wants to crank it up. The album also has some nice drumming on it and is well produced.

    4 out of 5 stars Spirited punk-tinged rock........2002-10-04

Holly McNarland may take home the prize for some of the dumbest album titles around (Stuff? Home Is Where My Feet Are?), but don't let that deter you. Her music and lyrics are far smarter than her unfortunate choices in titles.

Though her 1997 debut Stuff had much more raw firepower, Home... kicks up the eccentricity a notch. Check out the techno-ed up "Brush into My Tears". Her melodies on this album are less immediately accessible and her song structures more ambitious, but there are still rock-out moments aplenty. Lead track "Do You Get High?" is a classic McNarland kicker in the veins of "Numb" and "The Box", with rough but anthemic vocal harmonies, big beats and electric guitars. McNarland has refined her vocals a bit to take the grating edge off, and while I enjoyed her unrestrained wails on Stuff, her singing has definitely matured. Her lyrics have improved greatly, dispensing with the sometimes awkward phrasing that had been her only lyrical flaw up to now. "Beautiful Blue" doesn't quite scale the heights of McNarland's best song "Water", but it remains an effective demonstration of her musical alchemy -- the reconciliation of the beautiful with the ugly, the tenderness with the rage. When this woman rocks out, she's a force to be reckoned with, her muscular arrangements, soaring but surprisingly versatile voice, and sure-handed song progressions demolishing the likes of Alanis Morissette.

Five years was a long time to wait and I think Stuff is a stronger album given its unbridled energy. However, it's still mighty nice to see a talented, uncompromising singer-songwriter back in action. Think of it as riot-grrl energy with musical finesse and catchy pop sensibilities.

5 out of 5 stars An Obscure Masterpiece.......2002-10-03

I got this CD after hearing Beautiful Blue on the radio and was blown away from the simple beauty of it.

I was wondering how good this album would be. After all, it took over 4 years to make.

Lke wine, Holly let herself age a little bit to perfection.

The music is complex yet simple, and her voice is hard-edged and beautiful. She is a living oxymoron (in a good way)

Soem of the songs are instantly accessable (Do You Get High, Sister, Beautiful Blue) while others you grow to love (my favorites I Cry, More, Dallas)

She manages to get a very strong point across without being too wordy. In fact, many of her songs are lyrically repetitive, which usually bugs the hell out of me, but I like it here.

A hidden gem that every true music fan should seek out.

In many respects, Lily Pons was the Galli-Curci of her generation: a winning combination of good looks, charm, an appealing and non-confrontational timbre, and easy facility in the stratosphere. Those who learned the "Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor or the "Bell Song" from Lakmé via the original 78s back in the 40s will be bowled over by the vivid detail and lack of background noise in these stunning Sony restorations. First-time listeners will marvel at her effortless passagework and high notes (she often transposed her arias up on records); but may be put off by a slight thinness in the middle register (not evident in her Odeon recordings from the late 20s), sketchy intonation at times, and expedient aspirating in downward scales. Although these selections encompass a gamut of stylistic and emotional contrasts, you'd scarcely know it from the singer's pleasant but characterless interpretations, which tickle the ear without quite racking the brain. --Jed Distler

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-07-09

This could have been recorded yesterday, the sound quality is excellent and without blemish. By far the best recordings of Pons I have, and I would like to have others. She reminds me of Jo, separation of notes, clear, real trills, a range to rival Sumac, flexibility to perfection, and always that today neglected once standard fare of the coloratura, the requisite leap to the top note at the end of an aria. And a pretty sound. I love this album.

I have a Studio at Home and Went There Whenever I Felt Like Writing a Song. It was Inspirational to Work Like that and I have Written About 50 Per Cent of the Songs on this Album. 4 out of 5 stars ?.......2001-11-27

I think it's a good CD, a nice mix of music. It really makes me drift away. Some of the songs are a bit boring, but the good ones are REALLY good. I'd recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars This CD comes with a wonderful array of enjoyable music........1999-01-10

This CD comes with a lot of enjoyable music, however, it becomes old after awhile. I would suggest on buying only if you like to listen to the same music basically over and over again. However, what do I know, I suck, I am the president of aol.

5 out of 5 stars a terrific twofer CD that offers lots of great material.......2004-11-20

Now here's a heck of a great reissue--a big thumbs up to the BGO label for releasing this terrific twofer. It combines B.B. King's 1978 album "Midnight Believer", & the follow up, 1979's "Take It Home", on 1 disc. "Midnight Believer" had been quite tough to find on CD prior to this release. Both of these two albums were basically flat-out collaborations with the Crusaders. Both of the albums were produced by Stewart Levine, who was the producer of previous Crusaders material, and Wilton Felder, Stix Hooper, & Joe Sample of the Crusaders. Also, apart from a couple King co-writes on "Take It Home", Crusaders members, along with their regular songwriting collaborator Will Jennings, were responsible for all of the songwriting. Also, Sample played all of the keyboards on both albums, Hooper played drums & percussion on the majority of tracks from each album, & Felder played bass on 2 "Midnight Believer" tracks & all of the "Take It Home" tracks. All that said, it's entirely logical to pair these 2 albums together--it's additionally nice since these individual albums both run less than 35 minutes apiece. There are some tracks on this CD that aren't up to snuff, but they are far outweighed by the highly worthwhile and excellent tracks which, when put together, make for a great CD. "Midnight Believer" offers irresistibly catchy & funky mid-tempo songs like the title track, "A World Full of Strangers", & the sly, infectiously fun "Never Make A Moon Too Soon". "I Just Can't Your Love Alone" is a tad overproduced, & has an excessive, overlong fade, but it's still really catchy. There's also a strong, moody ballad with "Hold On (I Feel Our Love Is Changing)", & a nice (though somewhat slight) feel-good tune with "When It All Comes Down (I'll Still Be Around)". The slow "Let Me Make You Cry A Little Longer" is frustratingly sappy, lacking in catchiness, & runs over 5 & ½ minutes, making it an exhausting tune to have closed the original album with, but it's the only dud on the album. "Take It Home" is overall a weaker album, but still has some great stuff. It offers some irresistible, funky tracks including "Happy Birthday Blues", the infectious feel-good tune "Better Not Look Down", which combines amusing spoken verses with an ultra catchy chorus, and "Tonight I'm Gonna Make You A Star", which was written by Jennings & King, and seems to be an ode to Lucille (his guitar). On the other hand, "The Beginning of the End", also written by Jennings & King, is a hard-hitting slow blues with an impassioned B.B. vocal. The funky "A Story Everybody Knows" is pretty great too, but the ends of the verses, with B.B. going into spoken word mode, are annoyingly corny. "Same Old Story (Same Old Song)" is ultra catchy, but runs itself into the ground a little with the excessive, overlong fade. The title track is a nice pop-ish feel-good tune, but it's frustratingly slight & sugary. "I've Always Been Lonely" is a rather dull ballad, & "Second-Hand Woman" is a bit grating & plodding--these 2 tracks aren't so bad that they'll compel you to instantly skip to the next track, but they fall way short of being fully satisfying. Still, the "Take It Home" album is never less than good background music. And like I said before, all of the really good/ excellent tracks from each album give you a heck of an album's worth of material. The sound quality on this disc is excellent & provides some nice liner notes as well, as well as full performance, songwriting, & production credits for each album. Even if it was the idea of someone at ABC Records (the label they were both on at the time) to bring B.B. King & The Crusaders together, it was a great idea nevertheless, & this CD offers conclusive proof that they made some excellent music together.

        Frankie Miller
        Long Way Home
        Jerkin Crocus Records

When you are asked to write a review of a new CD by a record company it appears to generate within the reviewer an ability to wax lyrical and become too full of their own self importance. This review will not fall into that category at all (I hope!).

When I play this album I keep coming back to a very simple phrase to sum it up. It is a belter and should be honoured with a place within any self respecting music lovers collection.

From the opening powerhouse that is Guilty Of The Crime to the official closer of the poignant It's A Long Way Home there are no weak tracks on this collection. The one annoying thing is the fact that there is a hidden track. The song is fine but why do record companies do this? It is silly, and not what the public wants. If a song is good enough to be included it should be selectable.

Now you will well be aware that Frankie had major health problems from 1994 but this collection is no trawl through poor off cuts or rough demo material. This is quality with a capital Q.

An absolute corker, this album knocks so much of today's crop of musicians efforts in to the minor leagues. Collaborating with Joe Walsh (Eagles), Nicky Hopkins (Rolling Stones & Jeff Beck Group), Chrissie Stewart (Full House) and Ian Wallace (Bob Dylan & King Crimson) this bands just powers their way through a raft of 11 selectable songs and they rock.

Frankie at the time of these recordings was in terrific form both as a singer and a writer. Some are co-writes with Will Jennings and they will have you gasping with amazement at the strength of the songs and in particular the performances.

This CD deserves loads of airplay. Don't buy this album thinking about Frankie and his brain haemorrhage. Frankie is doing well and still writing. Buy it for the cracking album it is and no other reason. Long Way Home is on Jerkin' Crocus Records.

Bring Frankie Miller and his music into your life. It will make you feel great.

        5 out of 5 stars It's Been A Long Time Comin'............2006-10-10

Anyone familiar with Frankie Miller already know that he's a supurb vocalist and songwriter. That being said, this collection of previously unreleased tunes make you hope for more releases from his archives. Miller hasn't recorded an album since his mid '90's brain heamorrage, but this album shows how deep his catalog runs. Frankie and his team have seen fit to release some great songs on this one, with the centerpiece being the classic Jim Reeves song "He'll Have To Go", which now is a classic mid-tempo rocker, thanks to a great arrangement (backed by Joe Walsh, the late Nicky Hopkins, Ian Wallace, and Frankie's longtime bassist, Chrissie Stewart), and Frankie's killer vocals. Among the variety are other chugging rockers like "Guilty Of The Crime", "Over The Line", the Dylanesque "Lies Tell The Best Truth Of All", and some lyriclly crafted tunes with Will Jennings (Eric Clapton, etc.) "You Always Saw Blue Skies", and the title track. This is a deep, well crafted album, not a bunch of scraps......I can only hope there are future releases planned if they are as good as this one. Oh yeah, there's also a hidden track at the disc's close, "Prince Charles Told Me Not To Name Drop" (or something like that), so let the CD play it's way off.
