Album Description

Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Guitarist Steve Hackett soon signed on, as did drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, who'd later emerge (as would Gabriel) as a solo superstar. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure, Genesis grew from a progressive art-rock outfit into one of the biggest arena rock acts ever, with a long string of platinum-sellers and chart smashes. On this, their most comprehensive career-spanning collection to date, Genesis' remarkable evolution is revealed.

4 out of 5 stars A good collection for the begginers like me!!!!!!.......2007-07-04

I never care about Genesis, so I decided to try to listen to them so I just bought this collection. I like it!. My favourite cd was the second one! songs like Abacab, Turn it on again, makes me wants to hear this cd over and over

4 out of 5 stars Great mix for the price!.......2007-06-17

For the price, this collection can't be beat. All the classics, all the hits, from all the different periods of Genesis.

A really good overview of their work.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction ahead of Genesis' 2007 US tour.......2007-06-07

Economic value: 5 Stars; Compilation: 4 Stars; Packaging: 3 Stars

Now that Genesis has decided to do the (take your pick: dreaded/hoped for) reunion tour this year, starting in Europe shortly, coming to the US later this year, it's time to revisit the only compilation that spans the entire Genesis studio catalogue.

"Genesis Platinum Edition" (3 CDs; 40 tracks; 235 min.) tracks the band's history in reverse chronological order, with one exception: the title track of 1997's "Calling All Stations", which is stuck at the end of CD1 and sounds totally out of place--for many reasons. But for that song, this covers Genesis 1971-1991, and it's amazing what these guys put out in 20 years, and how the band evolved. This compilation is a decent attempt to cover it all. CD1 (16 tracks, 78 min.) covers the band's most successfull years, and many of these tracks are also found on the "Turn It On Again - The Hits" compilation. Am I the only one to think that the songs from 1986's "Invisible Touch" album have aged very poorly? It makes me cringe to listen to them. (Note: "Tonight Tonight Tonight" comes in an edited, short version here.) CD2 (15 tracks, 77 min.) tracks the intermediary years and I was surprised how good these songs resonate still. Check out for example "Abacab" (in the full album version, thankfully), and "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow", but shamefully "One for the Vine" is missing, one of the band's best tracks ever (and perhaps the best song Tony Banks ever penned). CD3 (9 tracks, 80 min.) covers the Peter Gabriel years (1971-1975), and while I did not mind (and at times greatly enjoyed) Genesis' evolution to a mainstream successful band, this era is still the most compelling for me. Check out "The Cinema Show" and "Supper's Ready" (both here in full length) if you're not familiar with them, you'll be blown away, I promise you.

There is no arguing with the economic value of this compilation: 4 hours of music for $20, you can't beat that. The packaging is a different story: skimpy liner notes, and the booklet is misprinted with pages out of order... I have seen Genesis in concert only once, in Brussels on the 1977 tour for "Wind & Wuthering" and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Unforgettable. While I know that this year's reunion tour is probably a money-grabbing thing, I nevertheless do plan on seeing them when they come to Columbus in September, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars What the Turn it On Again collection should`ve been.............2007-05-14

This is, without a shadow of a doubt THE best collection of my favorite band of all time. Disc 1 is what the TIOA CD shoulda been. Not just pure hit machine pop but some great prog like Home by Sea & Mama COMPLETLEY UNEDITED. Also has a hard to find piece called Paperlate remixed.-5 stars. Disc 2 has classics like ABACAB & Turn it on Again totally remixed. it ain`t Genesis at its best but its good.-4.5 stars. Disc 3 is a masterpiece, prog rock greatness with Suppers Ready! Nuff said.-6 stars. steller.

3 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, but can you - honestly - take Phil Collins seriously?.......2007-05-11

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Peter Gabrial, Steve Hackett (later of "GTR," a band Creem Magazine referred to as "SHT"), Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Mike Rutherford (he of "The Living Years" fam ), and...and...and...Phil Collins. EXCELLENT drummer! But WHY "push the envelope," seeing how annoying he can be? Oh well, "buy the ticket, take the ride," I guess...

What once seemed Queen's greatest liabilities--a preening flamboyance and pompous, overwrought theatricality--have ironically become their most enduring charms in a gray, postmodern pop-music landscape. While it eschews the glammy, pre-punk hard rock of live faves like "Stone Cold Crazy" and "Tie Your Mother Down" for the band's more quirky club-beat string of latter-day hits, this 51-track triple-CD anthology goes a long way toward documenting the true dimensions of the band's music and fame. Some songs may not be instantly familiar to American fans because of yet another irony: just as their U.S. fortunes waned during the punk and new wave era, the band was exploding into true international superstars. Thus, there may be a sense of discovery here, whether of latter-day Queen material or solo work by Brian May and Freddie Mercury, whose duet on "Barcelona" with diva Montserrat Caballé transcends boundaries of both time and genre. A previously unreleased live performance of "The Show Must Go On" featuring Elton John on vocals is also included. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Queen collection!!.......2007-06-19

What more is there to say... the Ultimate Queen collection! This is a great collection of songs and any Queen lover will most certainly love this compliation of recordings.

I recommend that any Queen lover get this!!

    4 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2007-03-29

While this is not the completely definitive collection as some of the purists in other reviews would want, this is exactly what I wanted. I do not have any other Queen recordings and I was looking for a package that contained as much as possible in a single set. I am listening to this almost exclusively in the month since I received it and I am not worn out yet.
If you don't have any Queen and you want to buy just one set, this will cover just about everything. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star rating is the obvious omission of "Tie Your Mother Down" and a couple of recording level issues on a couple of tracks, notably "We will rock you, We are the Champions" which are strangely muted relative to most of the other tracks.

    4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2007-02-10

I was kind of skeptical buying this CD set, considering that I already own Classic Queen, but I figured I had nothing to lose but $26. I bought it, and here is my opinion:

Disc 1 has most of the Queen hits that are known to almost every classic rock and Queen fan alike. The only disappointment (in my opinion) on this disc was that the full version of Fat Bottomed Girls was not used.

Disc 2 has most of their other hits. Some notable ones include I Want to Break Free, Under Pressure, The Show Must Go On, Hammer to Fall, and Who Wants to Live Forever, which was edited but the full version can be found on Classic Queen.

Disc 3 is not great, but it's good. It has some songs that shouldn't be there, but the only hits on there are Princes of the Universe, Heaven for Everyone, Thank God It's Christmas, and the Somebody to Love duet with George Michael.

Overall, this was a good CD set. If you are a first-timer or a collector, this is good for you. But it's good for anyone, really.

    5 out of 5 stars queen.......2007-01-19

I HAVE WORN OUT TWO SETS OF THIS COLLECTION, THIS IS TO REPLACE ONE, WORN OUT AGAIN, THANKS FOR OFFERNING A TRIPLE SET

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-16

I was not a big fan of Queen-though I've always liked their music, just never owned any of it. I bought it during the holidays for my kids (6,5,&3)for our car trip to Florida. They LOVED it!! Seriously!! My three yr.old likes the "funny song" -Another One Bites the Dust & can sing it word for word-my 5 yr.old loves Killer Queen & Don't Stop Me Now & just about all the other songs on the CD. I thought they would like it because the Chicken Little movie has We are the Champions & all 3 of them sing it...& I was right.

Originally conceived for the British market, where Roxy Music and its debonair frontman Bryan Ferry were much more popular than in the States, The Platinum Collection gathers every band and Ferry single, along with some popular album tracks, on three chronologically arranged discs. As an overview of both acts' extensive and connected careers, from 1973 through Ferry's 2002 Frantic album, this is a far more comprehensive overview than the many single compilations already released. Initially, there was a substantial musical dissimilarity between lead vocalist Ferry's solo work, much of it less artsy and aggressive than early Roxy songs such as "Do the Strand" and "Virginia Plain." Eventually, by the late 70s the two became less distinct. The primary difference being Ferry's tendency to radically rearrange musty pop, folk, and R&B covers between his more sensually lush, dance oriented music. Roxy Music disbanded in 1983 leaving Ferry, whose solo work comprises almost half of this package and the entire third disc, to carry the torch. Short but pertinent notes about each song, along with small reproductions of the original British picture sleeves, provide some historical background. And although all three CDs include 15 tracks, there is plenty of unused room on each for more music. Regardless, this is an essential addition to any British rock fan's collection. The compilation is nearly as classy and sophisticated as the stylish band, and its suave singer, deserves. -- Hal Horowitz

    4 out of 5 stars Platinum Review.......2007-05-16

Very good introduction to Bryan Ferry. However, it is missing "Everytime You Go Away".

5 out of 5 stars A Superb and Classic Collection of Romantic Rock Anthems.......2006-07-20

I was a fan of Roxy Music since I first heard Avalon and More Than This. They have always been a band that people can relate to. Roxy Music is a Progressive Rock band that wore drag, with Brian Eno beginning in this Band as its Keyboardist, and the fact that with Sax and great Rock and Roll guitar as well as drum and bass, that makes Roxy Music into a true anthem band of British Rock fron the 1970s.
Bryan Ferry is a great Crooner, and he even in drag is a Glam Rock Sinatra, when David Bowie has no one ever who can stand at his level from before or after, as a performer, as they BROKE THE MOLD when he was created as a performer. Bryan and Roxy Music are definatly Bowie types in performing, with the use of Keyboards and Moorg Synth sounds as well as Sax and Rock Guitar, giving them such a classic style of the time that could rival Bowie, but of course no one could top Bowie.
My favorate songs from the time from 1972 to 1975 are Street Life and Pajamarama as well as Love is The Drug plus Virginia Plain and Both Ends Burning from Roxy itself as a Band, when Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and The In Crowd by Bryan solo are amazing, but his version of Dylan's Hard Rains Gonna Fall is the top favorate for me from that period for Bryan, when my least favorate from that era in anything is Do The Strand. Lets Stick Together was released in 1975, and I totally recomend the whole album and not just the selections on this Collection. In dealing with 1975 to 1985 I recomend Dance Away and Angel Eyes as well as Sign of the Times from Bryan's Bride Stripped Bare album. Avalon is a true classic but Flesh + Blood has songs that are not too clamorous for me, so the songs from that album on the Collection exept Same old Sceene I do not recomend. Avalon and Boys and Girls are classics in full status, while Is Your Love Strong Enough is a song that should have been on Boys and Girls reissued or Bete Noire which was as amazing.
In closing this is a true classic in a Collection.

    1 out of 5 stars Poxy Muzak.......2005-10-29

I've always liked Bryan Ferret. As far as a rock singer goes, he has great hair. But this compilation is just like all the rest only it has more stuff on it. What really irks me though is the best stuff was left off. Songs like "Bitters End" where Andy McBride's saxophone sounds like a fart on an empty subway platform. Now that's rock & roll. This I believe. And where is "Take me To The River (and chuck me in)"? All in all, a wonderful cd set, but I should have bought something else with the money, like the new Brian Ferret compilation.

    5 out of 5 stars Glammy-Silky- Sexiness on a Cloud.......2005-01-14

Imagine just coming from a really fabulous party, then diving into a pool of the smoothest, velvety chocolate... enough said.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Compilation.......2004-12-30

I love the early Roxy Stuff, and the Later Bryan Ferry Stuff. It hardly seems like the same perosn when you hear the full progression of Ferry from Glam rockin Eno-Ite to the mellow crooner he has become. I will say he is still cool and fun to listen to in any era of his music. The only oddity is the glaring ommision of "Out of the Blue" and "In Every Dream Home a Heartache". Oh well, I have those in other form as well. It's a great Bryan Ferry/Roxy Music starter kit.

I just wanted to correct the reviewer "Tanya" who stated that the 2 CD Platinum Edition only contained 20 songs versus the 18 on this particular edition. The set with 2 CD's is a GREAT value because it includes 32 songs, not 20!!!! It helps to count the entire song list when comparing the CD's.

The 2-CD Edition includes the following songs that are not included on the edition with only 18 songs:

    1. Angel Song - Great White
    2. Don't Close Your Eyes - Kix

You can figure that each of these songs would cost $0.99 if purchased individually through a service such as iTunes, so I recommend paying the extra money for the 2 CD edition versus purchasing this CD with only 18 songs. This is the best collection of power ballads on the market.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to be what the commercial promised.......2006-03-10

I imagine that this disk has all the songs advertised on TV, but somehow I remember being a lot more excited about it while watching the commercial than I was when I got the CD. There are a few true gems on here though- perhaps those are the only songs they played in the commercial. Something everyone should know: the 2-cd edition costs twice as much, but only has 20 songs compared to 18 songs on this disc. This disc lacks 3 of the songs that the other set has, but has an additional song not included in the 2-cd set.

5 out of 5 stars No one has put these power ballads in one collection like this! Excellent! .......2006-02-19

No one has ever put these power ballads together like this on one single CD! Although there is a 34-song collection of this CD, the 18 chosen for this collection were pretty well chosen. But this was a strong subgenre from 1987 to 1991, when there were an increasing number of power ballads by heavy metal bands becoming hits. It seemed common for the ballads to peak at No.1 or 2, so very high, while their rockers finished lower at No. 6, 7, 8 or 10. Maybe some people were more comfortable with their ballads than the layers of loud guitars blasting over them. They surprisingly balanced well with the R&B ballads and pop dance hits back then. Most of these songs I've seen on other compilations, but this is the first one to include Carrie's Europe and Kiss' underrated Forever. This one is more balanced, from the acoustic numbers of Extreme, Tesla, Poison and Mr. Big, to the loud guitars of High Enough, I Remember You to even the bluesy Cinderella ballad which I still love. I still love Whitesnake's adventurous Is This Love. It's even message driven, even in Scorpions' Wind Of Change. And there's something about the quiet mood of Queensryche's Silent Ludicity that still is haunting today. Another favorite I like here is Kix' Don't Close Your Eyes, which avoids the typical formulaic approach of the other power ballad hits and has a strong musical performance all throughout. This is a dynamic collection to recall this solid music period in popular music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Branigan compilation from the Northern Hemisphere!!.......2007-03-28

The late Laura Branigan had a remarkably worldwide fan base, with several greatest hits albums in countries ranging from South Korea, Brazil, Japan, Germany, and 2 in South Africa (and that was before the U.S. even had one!).

This PLATINUM COLLECTION is the best new compilation of her work since her death in 2004. While there are a few tracks that are glaringly absent (e.g., "Cry Wolf", "Hold Me", "Forever Young", singles from 1993's OVER MY HEART album, etc.), it is a good selection of her work. Better yet, these tracks are remastered!

Again, this is not a perfect selection (the ones from South Africa had the best selections), this album is the best one in years, certainly better than the BEST OF BRANIGAN that was released in the U.S. in 1995.

If you must limit yourself to one Branigan album and you do not want shell out the money for the ones from South Africa, the PLATINUM COLLECTION from the U.K. is your best choice!

5 out of 5 stars Tell Laura I Love Her.......2007-02-14

To me, no collection could ever be complete without including every track Laura ever recorded. Hit or not, that is only spectulation by our obsession with the cencors of what is hot or not. Radio does not play the whole impact of what the public really enjoys listening to. Key words, "enjoys listening to, not what we are forced to hear on radio. Laura shall live on in the musical soundtrack of our lives.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-01-11

Great compliment of songs and definitely a collector's dream. Can't recommend it any higher!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good collection of a great singer's hits and album tracks........2006-12-19

Laura Branigan, a New York singer with a big, beautiful voice and dark sultry looks, tore up the charts in the early to mid 80s with a mix of europop style dance hits and soft rock ballads. Hindered by bad management, a label that though supportive, didn't know exactly what niche to market her to, and personal drama (divorce, drugs, lawsuits), her platinum status days didn't last, and she was all too soon forgotten. A pity, because Branigan was a top notch vocalist, with emotional range, phrasing and delivery that blow away all the screaming "divas" of today.

This Rhino produced compilation of hits and stand-out album tracks is perhaps the best selection of her work to date: it sounds great and offers some interesting song choices besides the chart hits (all here, for the most part). Wisely, the focus seems to be on the earlier years, when the lovely Branigan was at her peak. The inclusion of Satisfaction (a single in Germany) is a nice touch, although I'm puzzled by the omission of Maybe Tonight (a UK and Germany single which even has a video). A fine collection at any rate, and perhaps we'll even see the complete Self Control album remastered by Rhino with bonus tracks!

5 out of 5 stars THE Laura Branigan hits collection! .......2006-09-25

Few people remember Laura Branigan's first hit single, "All Night With Me." It reached #60 a few months before the career-establishing megasmash "Gloria" hit the airwaves and shot to #2. That first hit has been so forgotten, in fact, that both Branigan's U.S. hits collections ("The Best of Branigan" and "Essentials") completely ignore the tune. Happily, this UK compilation presents the song, along with most of Branigan's other Hot 100 entries. "All Night With Me" is a great record, and it's a real treat that it has finally been remastered and presented on a hits CD.

With that said, this is THE Laura Branigan collection to own. The hits everyone knows are here ("Gloria," "Solitaire" and "Self Control"), along with smaller but solid hits like "The Lucky One," "Power of Love" and "Spanish Eddie." And of course, Branigan's #1 smash "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" from 1983 is here. And all these hits sound crisp and layered with the superb mastering job provided by Heathmans Studios.

There are a few head-scratchers, of course. Where is the hit "Hold Me"? Granted, it hit low in the Hot 100, but it was a hit and is a sexy, vibrant record. Instead of this song, or the single "Cry Wolf," listeners get two rather negligible ballads ("If You Loved Me" and "Lovin' You Baby") from Branigan's 1982 debut album and "Silent Partners," an okay song from Branigan's 1984 album. These tracks' inclusion is extra annoying, because all the material from Branigan's splendid and thoughtful 1993 "Over My Head" album is ignored.

Still, this is the very best Laura Branigan hits collection that has ever been available. The lovely, late vocalist sounds astonishing on every song, especially "Solitaire" (what a range!!!). Let's hope that someday a record label (read: Rhino) will make a two-CD collection of her work that includes all the hits, rare tracks and choice album tracks, like "Shadow of Love," one of Branigan's best recorded performaces.

    4 out of 5 stars ALMOST...Platinum.......2007-03-25

Of course you can never please EVERYBODY with "best of" collections.
And this IS a darn good collection. HOWEVER,...

It would have been perfection to have included the following songs:

    1) I'M A LITTE BIT LONESOME

    2) I DON'T WANNA MAKE LOVE (with anyone else but you)

(if this song does'nt get you in "the mood" ..you're clinically dead)

    3) THE ROOM AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRS (ditto)

This would have made it KILLER Platinum! But I give credit for at least finally putting more of Eddie's great songs out there on CD. It's about time. Now a double- CD GOLD collection would be nice too!
    (I know,..we're just never satisfied!)

5 out of 5 stars Eddie Rabbitt at his best.......2007-03-02

I've been waiting quite a while for a compilation of Eddie Rabbitt songs to come along. Most of what has been out there has been his "crossover" music, and those of us with true Rabbitt ears knows that the crossover songs are his weakest. This is a great collection of his best and a long time in coming. It's recorded well too. The one song I'm sorry isn't on here? "Long Gone". But all in all they caught all the others, and some are a bit obscure so it's great they included them. A must for any Eddie Rabbitt fan!

4 out of 5 stars Best Eddie Rabbitt compilation currently available.......2006-12-22

I bought this CD recently and I must say that I'm quite pleased with it. Granted there are a few major hits missing like "Step By Step", "You And I" (duet with Crystal Gayle) and "Someone Could Lose A Heart Tonight" but it's probably the most comprehensive Eddie Rabbit "best of" compilation available in the market at the moment and the sound quality is quite good too. Rabbitt recorded under various labels and until someone manages to untangle all the contractual issues, don't expect to find a complete Eddie Rabbitt hits compilation anytime soon! By the way this CD is issued by Rhino in collaboration with Warner Music U.K. Ltd.

4 out of 5 stars Great collection, but a great song is missing!.......2006-12-05

"Step by step" is my favorite Eddie Rabbitt's song. When I was a young boy I used to sing it to my myself every time I was about to date a "too beautiful to touch" girl. Some times I succeeded, thanks to Rabbitt's encouraging lyrics. So I regret Platimun Collection lacking it. But, however, it's a very good choice.

Early buzz on The Emancipation of Mimi predicted that this would be the disc to mark "the return of the voice"--the voice being that glass-shattering instrument that propelled Carey to bestselling female artist of all time status--and mostly it is. But because of the small army of talent involved in its assembly, the album is way more than just a comeback vehicle. For proof, try the straight-ahead, look-out-Beyoncé-Mimi's-still-got-it "Mine Again"; the '70s-soul cuddle-up "Circles," a don't-attempt-on-American Idol love song; or the gospel dazzlers "Fly Like a Bird" and "Stay the Night." But for songs that steer this disc directly into 2005, no looking back, scan the jewel case for tracks followed by the word "featuring": "To the Floor," with Nelly, bumps along to maximum booty-shaking effect, while Twista spins his natural-disaster-force vocals into "One and Only." Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, and Jermaine Dupri also pitch in; between them and the highwire vocals, Emancipation works the kind of pure-pop magic that sets us all free. --Tammy La Gorce

This platinum edition features four tracks not found on the original release: "Don't Forget About Us"; "What It Look Like"; "So Lonely (One & Only Part II)"; and a remix of "We Belong Together" featuring Jadakiss and Styles P.

    5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS!!!!!.......2007-06-07

I love this album and it is really sad that people are sleeping on it (lol it is six times platinum). This is a complete album that you can listen to from beginning to end. Mariah really did a great job of showing how talented she really is. It is a mixture of everything, this cd is up beat yet laid back, and it's a classic. This is her best album in my opinion and I can't wait for the next one.

MY TOP FIVE (This was a tough selection process b/c the entire album is great)

    1. Joy Ride
    2. Mine Again
    3. Circles
    4. Say Something
    5. Fly Like a Bird

5 out of 5 stars I never realized fully how good this album is. It's her best since Daydream and Butterfly!!.......2007-05-31

I'm gonna start off by saying that we all shouldn't deny that Mariah's voice isn't what it was back when those previously mentioned albums were released. It's not bad, but it has waned a bit.

But to get to the songs, it seems just like her Daydream album (which is my favorite from her): hit after hit after hit. The only songs I skip sometimes aren't even bad. It's just sometimes Mariah gets the yelling (Circles, Stay The Night) and I have to skip 'em.

If you don't have ANY of Mariah's albums (who wouldn't have at least one?) I would start with either this album or Daydream. If you do get this one, make sure it's the Platinum Edition because the extra songs are worth it. The only reason I could see someone getting the original Emancipation is for the beautiful cover which is superior to this one. But don't both look great?!

Some highlights are Shake It Off, Mine Again, One And Only, Your Girl, Fly Like A Bird and Don't Forget About Us.

I hope you enjoyed my review. Have a look at my others if you would like. ^_~

4 out of 5 stars Mariah Stepped Her Game Up!!!.......2007-02-28

Mariah stepped her game up from her last 2 albums and the buzz was definitely worth it. The first half of the album is good and the end was good, but the middle is a bunch of fillers. "Fly Like A Bird" is definitely the best track you kinda get a feel of the old Mariah back it the 90's. Great job and can't wait for the next album.

While not as comprehensive as their self-titled box set, this greatest-hits collection is an excellent introduction to the definitive Southern-rock band. If you've always wondered why people holler "Free Bird!" at bar bands, this album will show you, along with serving up several of Lynyrd Skynyrd's best songs: "Saturday Night Special," "What's Your Name," "Tuesday's Gone," and of course "Sweet Home Alabama." Some lesser-known but equally great songs are here as well: "Gimme Three Steps," "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller," and "That Smell." While some good material (notably "Needle and the Spoon" and "Working for MCA") is missing, this remains an excellent collection, highlighting the quality of the band's material, which is too often overshadowed by their good ol' boy image. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT TRIBUTE TO THE BAND FROM THE SOUTHEAST........2007-02-05

Readers and reviewers, I will be writing a review on the legendary compilation album entitled "GOLD & PLATINUM" by one of Rock's greatest bands and one of Southern Rock's greatest legendary bands to ever hail from the southeast. I give you one of Jacksonville, Florida's favorite sons, LYNYRD SKYNYRD. "GOLD & PLATINUM" was originally released in 1979 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the MCA Records label. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history as being one of the true pioneers of Southern Rock music. When lead singer and frontman Ronnie Van Zant joined forces with lead and rhythm guitarist Gary Rossington, lead and rhythm guitarist Allen Collins, lead and rhythm guitarist Ed King, keyboard player Billy Powell, drummer Robert Burns and bassist Leon Wilkeson, LYNYRD SKYNYRD was born. The core of LYNYRD SKYNYRD formation can be traced back to a High School in Jacksonville, Florida initially as the group MY BACKYARD. The name is later changed to LYNYRD SKYNYRD to immortalize school gym teacher Leonard Skinner, a legendary antagonist of long haired students. The band would go on to record some of Rock's greatest classics and would later record one of Rock's most sacred anthems. LYNYRD SKYNYRD'S "GOLD & PLATINUM" would be the result of of their greatest hits and accomplishments in Rock n' Roll. "GOLD & PLATINUM" is the story of LYNYRD SKYNYRD.

I will list and review certain song tracks that are of importance and relevance to this review. In my opinion, every single song track in this compilation album is good, but to shorten this review, I must only choose certain song tracks. It was really hard to choose one over the other but here it is. The song tracks are in their original exact running order as follows: DISC ONE (1.) "Down South Jukin'," (This song defines what Southern Rock n' Roll is all about. This song kicks a*s. The guitar sound makes the music sound raw and rugged. Ronnie sings this song like he dares to get in your face.) (2.) "Saturday Night Special," (This is a well recorded SKYNRRD Southern Rocker. This is another song that kicks a*s. The guitar riffs as well as the guitar solo are breathtaking and superb. This song gives a whole definition to hard rock. This song gives you the idea of what you would be doing with a Saturday Night Special and driving fast alone along the highway at night.) (3.) "Gimme Three Steps," (This is a well performed live song track of the original. In my opinion, they should have included the original song along with the live song track. The guitar playing sounds like the south has risen to invade the country with the Southern Rock invasion.) (4.) "What's Your Name," (This song sounds like a national anthem to meeting women. This song also kicks a*s. This song has a good beat to it and also defines Southern Rock at its absolute best.) (6.) "Gimme Back My Bullets," (This is a tough rugged Southern Rocker. This song truly kicks a*s. I love the guitar playing in this Rocker. This song takes Southern Rock to another level.) (7.) "Sweet Home Alabama" (This song is Alabama's proud National Anthem. This song is one of Southern Rock's greatest achievements. This song was recorded as a result of a comeback or response to Neil Young's song "Southern Man." This song has a very positive up beat to it and gives you a good feeling when you are at a bar drinking.) and (8.) "Freebird." (This song track was performed live. This song will always kick a*s no matter what. This is another song that the album should have also included the original song with this live song track. In my opinion, this song is Southern Rock's greatest achievement. This song should be voted as one of the Top Three greatest anthems of all-time ever recorded. This song is so beautiful that you can't help but feel entranced by the power of the music. I love the way Ronnie makes his whistling sound like a freebird. Ronnie also sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he could actually bring any woman to tears. The piano actually sounds like tears. The ending of this song is the real Rock stuff that is made of legend. In my opinion, "Freebird" is the "Stairway To Heaven" of Southern Rock.) DISC TWO (1.) "That Smell," (This is another good example of Southern Rock performed to perfection. This song kicks a*s. I also love the tough rugged guitar playing in this Rocker. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that you can't help but feel the song along with him.) (3.) "I ain't The One," (This song was performed live. This is another good Southern Rock song that should have included the original on this album along with this live song track. This song has a very good beat to it and also sounds tough and rugged. The guitar playing sounds superb and takes Southern Rock to another level.) (5.) "Simple Man" (This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written and performed by anyone. This song is any mothers advice to her son. Ronnie sings this song with such power and emotion that he actually convinces you that it is the best way to follow. I love the power of the guitars in this slow Rocker. The guitars dare you to prove the lyrics and the music wrong.) and (7.) "Tuesday's Gone." (I love this classic slow Rocker. The guitars actually sound like Tuesday's gone with the wind. This song is another one of Southern Rock's greatest and most beloved songs.) Forgive me for leaving out your favorite songs in this album. Like I said, All of the song tracks contained on this legendary compilation album are extremely good. Overall, this is a well comprised compilation album worth seeking out.

I highly recommend purchasing this legendary compilation for everyone to own as a valuable part of their own personal music collection. This legendary compilation album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.

In closing, LYNYRD SKYNYRD has continued to entertain us with their own special blend of Southern Rock music to this very day. However, the date of 20 October 1977 will always be a day to be remembered and will never be forgotten. It would be on this tragic day that the fatal airplane crash would claim the lives of frontman Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines and his sister Cassie Gaines and Road Manager Dean Kilpatrick. Ronnie's son Johnny has taken over the helm and chores as lead vocalist and frontman of LYNYRD SKYNYRD perfectly. As of today, Super Bowl Sunday, LYNYRD SKYNYRD is planning to perform a concert on TV after the game. According to the LYNYRD SKYNYRD official website, LYNYRD SKYNYRD will perform on a special Super Bowl edition of Late show Craig Ferguson. LYNYRD SKYNYRD RULES. I think that it is safe to say that LYNYRD SKYNYRD is here to stay. So here's to you late great Ronnie, Johnny, Gary, Allen, late great Steven, Ed, Leon and Bob. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. R.I.P. Ronnie Van Zant, Steven Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Skynyrd's best..........2006-08-06

I'm not sure why this album is a double-disc (probably because of the 14-minute version of Free Bird), but it only has eight tracks on each disc. Given the basic premise (a collection of their most successful releases), the album is solid. However, several of their better, less-known songs like "The Ballad of Curtis Lowe" are excluded. The highlight of the album is "Simple Man," which I consider to be their best song.

If you're looking for the best Lynyrd Skynyrd greatest hits album (from among the dozens that have been released over the years), keep looking. But if you just want a solid collection of some of their most famous work, this album does the job.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best.......2005-10-29

All they wanted to be was the Allman Brothers Band. Oh my did they ever overachieve. If you have any doubt about the greatness of this band just play this CD.
They were underappreciated and probably still are. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are you listening? Ronnie is one of the all time best and we won't see his like anytime soon.
There is not a bad track and I will go out on a limb and say that Sweet Home Alabama is the weakest song on the CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2005-06-03

These songs are pretty good, but just remember that a song doesnt have to go gold or platinum for it to be a classic.

5 out of 5 stars yes, this set has all the best.......2005-04-28

I have looked at other collections, and this one truly has all their best stuff. I know most people probably won't buy this set, but I urge you to check it out if you happen to decide to. Skynyrd has some great songs, and they brought a different perspective to rock music that was quite absent before their arrival (the perspective of patriots). I think its all awesome stuff, with killer 3 piece guitar and the whole works. This collection is boosted by the several live tracks, including "free bird" live, and though the studio version of this song rules, the live version is extremely good too. Anyways, give this collection a listen and see what the fuss is about.

5 out of 5 stars Great covers that don't get stale.......2004-04-11

I agree with the UB40 purists that UB40's covers are not as fundamental as Signing Off etc., but I was surprised at how this triple album boxed set did not fade easily. I copied the lot to my Mac Powerbook for a ten day working trip to Venezuela and have played the entire set 10 times over! That says a lot as I have plenty of other choices on the hard drive. My favorites are Holly Holy, Guilty, My Best Girl, Please don't Make me Cry, The Way you do thye things you do, The train is coming, Blood and Fire and Stay a little bit longer. Why? Well the driving beat on a good pair of headphones, the rythyms, the sheer variety from ballad to reggae pop, 8 Brummies all doing their thing, taking turns to shine.

UB40 is an enigma, a piece of Jamaica that is not entirely Jamaican, a true slice of cosmopiltan Birmingham. 25 years and still going strong - how many 8 piece bands can boast that?
