Having sung before royalty and performed with the Irish super-group Celtic Woman, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, the very young and remarkably beautiful singer is back with a tribute to her Celtic ancestry. As with her previous Platinum-selling releases (she is already a huge star in her native New Zealand, Japan, Australia, and the UK), the orchestrations are lush, with sighing phalanxes of strings and woodwinds. But in keeping with the avowed theme, there are also soft touches of soulful, wavering tin whistles and vaguely fiddle-like violin vamps. The program is more varied than the album's title might lead one to expect, encompassing everything from "The Last Rose Of Summer" and "Danny Boy" to "Shenandoah," "Scarborough Fair," "Abide With Me," and even a couple of more pop-oriented songs penned by Westenra herself. However, brief sideways winks toward Nashville or the Great White Way do not adulterate the album's overall mood of ethereal, remote bliss. The one misstep is an English-language cover of "Un Bel Di" ("One Fine Day") from Puccini's Madama Butterfly: an aria unsuited to the artist's fragile, bell-like soprano and placid temperament. This aside, established classical crossover/theatrical divas like Sarah Brightman would be wise to begin looking to their laurels. --Christina Roden
Album Description
Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places on her remarkable musical journey. Recorded in Dublin, Ireland, Hayley's third solo album is a very personal collection of classical arias, Irish and Maori folk songs - representing treasured people and places in her remarkable musical journey. For the first time the album also includes several original tracks written by Hayley herself. Celtic Treasure is a celebration of Hayley's family roots, and her grandparent's journey across the World on the first boat that left Ireland for New Zealand in the 1880s - taking with them a rich musical heritage. Her grandmother - a singer, and her grandfather, who played the accordion, were to be important influences on Hayley's musical development. Hayley grew up hearing her grandmother singing Italian opera arias in English. Hayley has continued this tradition by recording the well-known aria One Fine Day... ('Un bel di) from Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Hayley's grandmother also sang Irish folk tunes, and Hayley includes one of them - Danny Boy on the album as a tribute to her. Another Irish folk tune Sonny, is the first recording in which Hayley accompanies herself on the piano. In the same vein as Hayley's signature song Pokarekare Ana from her debut album Pure, Hayley's deep sense of pride as a New Zealander, and the simple beauty of her voice come together in E Para Ra - a Maori lovesong reflecting her own love of her homeland. Hayley's first recordings of her own songs bring together all these musical influences. They include her compositions Let Me Lie and Summer Rain and her lyrics to a haunting lute song by the Elizabethan English composer John Dowland, called simply Melancholy Interlude.

A Pure Joy.................2007-06-20
This album of Celtic standards is truly one of the most beautiful I've heard in a long time. For a girl of 19 to have this kind of vocal maturity is amazing... she gets better with each new recording.
Hayley has a clear, and pure voice that makes these familiar songs sound brand new. Though the whole album is a treat, the two hymns are inspiring. Others have done this repitoire, and done it well; none has done it better.
Hayley has a new recording of "West Side Story" due out soon; I can't wait. In the meantime, do not fail to grab this one.
Celtic Treasure - Hayley Westenra.......2007-06-20
Love the beautiful voice that I have come to expect from the Celtic Women lasses and the eclectic choice of songs really accentuates her range and flexibility to sing classic and contemporary. She shines with every choice. I await her next CD.
Great voice, but..........2007-06-18
I've got Hayley's other CDs, but this is a bit of a disappointment. Her voice is great, but there is a sameness about the songs. They are all sung in a laid back ballad style, which becomes too repetitive. I would like her to sing in different styles, which I am sure she can. For example, 'Sonny' sounds better sung more upbeat, as Jean Redpath sings it. Also, the backings are too bland and syrupy, they send you to sleep.Hopefully when she gets a new record company Hayley will spread her wings and put more variety into her albums.
Sophisticated, incredible voice.......2007-06-14
Simply spectacular vocals. Best singing voice in the world!! Just listen and then you'll know.
Nice CD.......2007-06-12
This is a very nice CD with in which the artist shows her wide range of talent. I've enjoyed it quite a bit. Very pleased with this choice.

Album Description
Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.
Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.
"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."
Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."
With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08
This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.
Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08
Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!
Very soothing.......2007-05-14
Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.
very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13
the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.
Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20
Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

Simply unreal.......2007-05-16
I find it utterly, amazingly, unthinkable that ANYone can come up with ONE 'negative' thing to say about this collection by the inimitable Ms Streisand. This CD..this music --- just transports me....elevates me...changes my mood and outlook......it is an ethereal listening experience..almost religiously hypnotic in its beauty, eloquence, and simplistic beauty. Some of the songs bring a lump to my throat. It's a joy and a privilege to hear this Artist render her vocal and emotional interpretation of these classic aural wonders.........a true gift to the ears. Bravo. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars/ Lisa Guerci in CT
a brave journey.......2007-05-14
to record this set of songs was a huge risk for barbra streisand to take. but what other singer would put themselves on the line like this and record a whole album of classical material except barbra streisand?
dusty springfield had a song or two that borrowed melodies from the classical music genre, and aretha franklin famously growled her way through 'nessun dorma' at the grammys back in 1999. but this is very different and bold.
and no one, not even those with the vocals chops and training like linda ronstadt wouldn't take this one on for size.
it is easy to hear that streisand has put all her stylistic trademarks on hold and performed her recital with integrity. and at times, a different streisand emerges and it's quite nice. it's only a phrase here and a note there but it's interesting to hear.
be warned--she still sounds like barbra streisand. and there's one song i personally wish she hadn't sang (the canteloube), only because there's another song in that canon that might have served her even better called 'la dellaisado'.
A for effort, C for execution.......2006-08-23
One does have to applaud Barbra for the effort, for showing that she really does care about music, not just her own. Everyone knows about her forays into pop, rock and even disco. Alas, while her voice is lovely, it seems more like an album of lullabies than classical lieder. She actually did a more authentic classical performance of a Schubert song on her TV special "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments." Alas, this serious effort never comes close to showing the range of her voice that she played with in that 2 1/2 minute song. A missed opportunity.
BARBRA,BARBRA,BARBRA!.......2006-03-04
This CD shows why Streisand is who she is; the ultimate DIVA! This lady can sing anything and on this wonderful collection she proves it. Barbra recored the album way back in 1973, and because the record label was afraid of low sales due to the classical nature of the material, didn't release it until 1976. What a treat for fans of Barbra and fans of classical music. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. I first heard this CD at a dinner party 15 years ago and pretty much forgot about it until I saw a few for sale on Ebay. I remembered loving it and immediately bought it through Amazon. I highly recommend this CD for all those people who simply love music. It will put you in a very relaxed mood, almost as if your home is filled with candles. Since I bought it I've listened to it at least 20 times or more and will continue playing it in my home. Don't worry if you can't understand what Barbra is saying if you don't comprehend the laguage of the song; you'll know it's still Barbra doing what she does the best. A few final notes ; Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Grammy for the album. And Streisand has personally stated that this was the hardest album vocally she has ever worked on in her career. In short a beautiful CD for any home.
A promise fulfilled.......2006-02-02
In 1963, when Streisand released her first album, there was no doubt she was a unique and talented singer. Some ten years later, after becoming a great success, she proved with "Classical Barbra" what a nurtured and developed talent is capable of. She didn't sit on her laurels and continue to churn out Broadway warhorses in an attempt to play it safe. Instead, like a true artist, she challenged her abilities. Her reward, and ours as well, is this absolutely gorgeous CD. Her voice, at a level of near perfection, glides effortlessly across each tender note of these well picked gems. If anyone ever doubted man's reason for existence, please, do yourself a favor and buy this CD. You will be inspired for a lifetime.

Pure angelic voice.......2007-05-15
I have the single-CD version of PURE (13 tracks). Hayley Westenra has a hautingly beautiful voice, just like Chloë Agnew (Walking in the Air), and Hinewehi Mohi (Oceania), though each one is unique in her own way. Every single track in this CD is a jewel. It is worth every single penny you pay for it.

Album Description
"The New World" is an epic adventure set amid the encounter of European and Native American cultures during the founding of the Jamestown settlement in 1607. James Horner's lush score invigorates the film as the characters explore love, loss, and discovery in the early Americas. Past score highlights include "Titanic", "Braveheart", "The Legend Of Zorro", "Troy", "A Beautiful Mind", and "Apollo 13". Directed by Terrence Malick and starring Colin Farrell, Christian Bale, and Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas.
Customer Reviews:
Sleepy transgression with music ripped off from classical composers of other eras.......2007-04-28
"The New World" pretends to guess the "real" adventure of John Smith and Pocohantas (played by newbie actor Q'Orianka Kilcher) in the "new world" -- North America -- after the Brits arrived in Virginia in 1607. The film takes place in both real time and movie time -- there is a scene where Poco is pregnant, then two seconds later the child is 4-5 years old -- and it tries to be realistic in its depiction of native North Americans (AKA Indians) and those invaders from Europe that have no British accent (the Indians speak in another language.
Because she achieved a level of fame worldwide from marrying an Englishman, Pocahontas's life is legendary. No one can prove or disprove many of these legends, some of which are included in this movie. What most works against the film as entertainment is the "script" that takes place in the characters' minds much of the time. The film score, which rips off a number of classical composers and uses music that wasn't invented in 1607, works against the film intellectually.
First, the script and its affect on acting and progression of thes story. Pocahantas's relationships with John Smith (Colin Farrell), later, John Rolfe (Christian Bale) is the main story captured in the film. We see Smith introduced to the natives home after being captured. He and Pocahantas fall in love and later she leaves the native home. This leads to conflict between the Euros and natives. Smith departs some time later and Pocahantas marries the other guy, then travels to England to meet the queen. There is more to it but the story is not the principal issue.
The principal issue is the awkward presentation of script and events with lengthy sequences of silence followed by script read in near silence that is supposed to represent what the characters are thinking. I found it confusing to follow, I couldn't make out what they were saying a lot of the time, and it was really boring. Later, after Pocahantas learns a few words of English there is less of this. My wife enjoyed this film thrice so I know you can overcome this issue and like the movie.
What I could not overcome on an intellectual level is the musical score. When a critic writes in Amazon that, "James Horner's lush score invigorates the film as the characters explore love, loss, and discovery in the early Americas," he forgets to mention this music in this score is ripped off from classical composers Richard Wagner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Hery Purcell.
The main theme in the score is a ripoff of Wagner's "Good Friday Spell" sequence from his opera "Parsifal". This theme is not only a ripoff, it is unbelievably repetitive the way it's used in the film. As used here, the theme reminded me of the 1960s song "Henry the 8th" where a Brit sings "I'm Hen-er-y the eighth I am, Hen-er-y the eighth I am I am" over and over ad nauseum.
This film score also rips off the central section of a Mozart piano concerto and a vocal piece by British composer Henry Purcell. None of these composers were writing music in 1607 and only one of them, Purcell, even lived during that century.
Maybe this doesn't matter to you as a moviegoer but it intellectually renders the score inert insofar as none of the music presneted had been invented in the era of the movie (1607-1617). In fact, outside the Purcell piece, the other two composers wouldn't be writing these pieces until the late 1700s and late 1800s, respectively.
So it matters to me and it helped lead to my low ranking for this film, which can be enjoyed on a certain level by people that hate a lot of talking in the movies. Otherwise, the period piece may or may not be correct in some areas (the helmets those Brits wore sure look like what we know the French Hugenots wore) but it is altogether incorrect in terms of music. At the time this film was supposed to represent, the concept of harmony had not yet been invented in European music.
All told, this film can be recommended to people that like the actors, history, romance and mild adventure, elements that are on display throughout the movie's 100 minutes. Don't look for much outside that, however, and prepare to be bored if you want any kind of action.

Songs Missing, Please, Anybody??.......2007-02-26
I'm interested in the name of the song sung to Pocahontas as the Playwright reads her the Welcoming Ode.
The only actual piece in the movie that came from the portrayed timeperiod. I'm an Early Music fanatic, and I'd appreciate it very much if anybody could answer that question for me.

Songs not on the soundtrack.......2006-08-05
Hi,
i was just wondering if anyone had those songs that were not on James Horner's soundtrack. I was just looking for those 2 songs: the one that starts the movie (Wagner: Das Rheingold - Vorspiel, and the other is piano (Mozart: Piano Concerto 23 - Adagio)... if u do have them can u send it over thru email (Jeffrey.Wang@student.ucr.edu)

It is rediculous that so many people should be furious with the soundtrack release of this film. I question their sensibilities at not checking what music was on the score - it clearly lables all tracks by James Horner.
When watching the film i felt that the Das Rheingold opera was too intrusive whereas Horner's score may not be particularly thematic but its slow beauty matches perfectly the onscreen images.

Disney management has often been accused of sacrificing the long-term quality of its animated features for the short-term pay-off of direct-to-video sequels to its middling modern successes. But as this soundtrack-sequel to the studio's 1998 quasi-feminist Chinese folk-tale proves, the music of such ventures can often compare favorably with that of the original. This new collection's buoyant "(I Wanna Be) Like Other Girls" is offered up in two versions: A more traditional stage musical take and an antic cover by Atomic Kitten that's pure teeny-bopping Disney Channel fodder. That's Harvey Fierstein lending his gravelly pipes to the equally spry redux of "A Girl Worth Fighting For," while the decidedly more angelic pipes of Kiwi teen soprano phenom Hayley Westenra grace the elegant "Here Beside Me" by Joel McNeely and Kate Light. Selections from McNeely's deft, emotionally understated orchestral score flesh out the collection. --Jerry McCulley

Alright...........2005-11-30
The music in this sequal is nothing compared to the first movie, but the tunes are catchy, and for a child that just enjoyed the movie, I could see how this would be a CD they'd want to hear over and over. It could get a bit annoying to their parents however. I would suggest seeing the movie before purchasing this soundtrack, for the songs are out of order from the movie, and it's always better to have a visual of what's going on before listening to the music alone.
I wasn't impressed, but I did enjoy it.
Terrible movie, but good soundtrack!.......2005-11-03
As a Chinese, I think this movie was terrible, because it made the tale of Mulan very confuse and strange. I don't want to see this movie again. But I bought this soundtrack, because the music was very good. Being fond of Lea Salonga's voice was one of the reasons.
The first song in this movie was "Lesson Number One", and it was my favourite. I love the choirs of children, it was perfect! It made me recognize the children's choirs in the church. Lea Salonga's voice was so sweet, and it's my favourite style! "A girl worth fighting for" came up in this soundtrak but it was remixed, and most of the lyrics were changed. Although it was very different from the original one, I love it. Because it gave me a good feeling, and I felt that it was more humorous than the original one. Another song named "Like other girls" is one of my favourites. Mei's voice was a little strange but very cute. The three princesses seemed to be crazy, but I could feel their emotion that they were eager of freedom and very unsetisfied with the arranged marrige. I felt very happy that they found their love and happiness by the end.
This was a movie which was so terrible but with perfect songs I have ever seen!
good cd.......2005-07-14
i saw the mulan II and loved the music in it, so i went out and bought the cd. here are my comments on each song-
1. lesson number one- 5/5. cute song
2. main title (score)- 5/5. i thought this was so pretty!
3. like other girls- 5/5. i absolutely love this song! it has a great beat, and just makes you want to sing along.
4. girl worth fighting for (redux)- 5/5. i love this song too, its funny
5. here beside me- 5/5. the first time i listened to it, i thought it was "ok", but now i think its great!
6. (i wanna be) like other girls (atomic kitten)- 5/5. i thought it was a great version of the original.
the next five songs, which are scores, are also very good!
overall, this cd was well worth my money, and the movie was even better!
Eh.......2005-07-04
The 'other girls' song is cute, but this reminds me of the follows up to pocahontas and cinderella and the little mermaid. Aladin's did well enough to make more, but...I think it really does have to do with the music. Mulan had that strong "reflection" by christina aguilera when she was first coming out, that established her as THE best voice, and that song, in spanish or english works well on it's own also. These sequals keep failing to have a strong song. The strengths here lie with the new score, new themes. It's easier to create a better classical piece for Disney it seems. And they have so many talented singers at their disposal...
One of my favourite soundtracks!.......2005-06-23
How wonderful! It's my favourite soundtrack. And the song named "Lesson Number One" is my favourite! Mulan's voice is great, and the children's voices are lovely too! I'll buy this album immediately!!!!!!!!!!!

First got a glimpse of Hayley on Russell Watson only DVD, and just fell in love with Hayley and her angelic voice. Then I received a compliation of different artist and Hayley's "Never Say Goodbye" was on there, and just had to get some more of her stuff. This best of CD is all around an excellent choice for someone looking for a sampling of her music.

I really like the CD. The only problem I had was when I was looking at the tracks for the CD they were not the correct ones. Then when I found the CD that had the tracks on it I wanted they could not get it too me. Other than that everything was good.

a wonderful gift.......2007-07-07
I did not know who Hayley Westenra was until I saw her performing on PBS. She has a really beautiful voice. This cd is a Christmas cd that she has recorded. Some songs are traditional Christmas songs and others are inspirational tunes. I recommend it.
I loved her other cd's but not this one........2007-03-05
I was disappointed when i recieved this cd. Not worth the price.
soothing music.......2007-02-11
Hayley Westenra is the best. I thought this would be Valentines Day music or the like, but it is more like simulated Christmas / religious. The title does say "gift", but when I read the description before buying I did not think Christmas music.
Haley Westerna My Gift to You CD.......2007-01-05
Great CD. She has a remarkable voice.
Celtic Woman and Haley Westenra.......2006-12-14
Celtic Woman is probably the best kept secret in the music world. I caught their show on our KCPT public television station and thought it was the best show they have ever aired. I have told my friend about Celtic Woman and they rave about them also. My favorite of all of the girls is Haley Westenra, but all of them are super and can stand alone on their individual talent. I can't say enough about the violin playing girl on the dvd, she is remarkable and mezmorizing to say the least. If you appreciate good quality entertainment, you can't miss with a purchase of Celtic Woman.

celtc treasure.......2007-06-23
I have gone to the Celtic Woman concert 4 times. The last one was to hear the new addition to the group(Hayley Westenra) I have 3 of her CDs
and couldn't find the Celtic Treasure Import anywhere so I am ordering it thru Amazon. She has the purest most angelic and perfect pitched voice I have ever heard! Love the fact she is so wholesome with her song selections. I can't wait for her next CD to come out. I have already given a couple of her CDs as gifts and they have also appreciated her.
I think a voice like Hayley's only comes around as often as Hayley's Comet!!!!! Sandi
O.k........2007-05-16
Not as good as Odyssey, but still worth the buy if you are a fan. I'll give it 3.5 stars.
Heaven Indeed!.......2007-04-13
I completely agree with the previous reviewer that this is Heaven. Miss Westenra's voice is pure poetry. She has really grown since I first heard her sing. I have been a fan since her CD Pure. I had only wished that I had heard of her before that. She is incredibly talented. The beauty of her singing touches you to the core. It is hard to describe it.
I frequently purchase the import versions of her CD's because they have additional songs. Treasure certainly lives up to its name. Miss Westenra's family has a rich musical background which leads back to Ireland. These are songs she grew up listening to and has made her own.
I especially love "Let Me Lie," "Shenandoah," "E Pari Pa," and "Abide With Me." The duet featuring Humphrey Berney ("Le Notte Del Silenzio") was truly beautiful. "Bist Du Bei Mir" was also an incredible track.
I can't say enough about this artist. I wish her all the success in the world! I recommend that anyone who hasn't heard of Miss Westenra yet, take a listen. You don't know what your missing.
Enjoy!
Jennifer
Heaven! I've heard Heaven..........2007-04-10
Or is it an angel who has somehow fallen from heaven, how fortunate we are that we are able to have the resources and technology that her voice may be enjoyed. I find it hard to describe the beauty and joy that this recording gives me, but it is a keeper to be prized above all others. I chose to purchase this one over Celtic Treasure because it has 15 songs as opposed to 13. The above description states that this album has 2 bonus tracks, but it's obvious that whoever wrote that has not looked closely at the 2 albums. Only 10 songs are on both albums; Treasure has 5 songs not on the other; and Celtic Treasure has 3 songs not found on Treasure. I'll have to end up buying Celtic Treasure for the 3 additional songs but why didn't they just include all the songs, 18 total, on the album and distribute it worldwide? Then we would truly have her 3rd album en toto instead of having to purchase 2 albums which both claim to be her 3rd album. Regardless, I recommend this as her best (at least until I get another CD by this Angel).
