Album Description

Kinky Boots is a likeable crowd pleaser (the capacity crowd at Sundance was laughing so hard it was hard to hear the next line). The incredible track listing follows the film touting legendary stars such as Nina Simone, David Bowie & James Brown. Also included on the soundtrack are onscreen performances by Chiwetel Ejiofor as well as classic Adrian Johnston's stellar compositions. This is a sing-a-long soundtrack in it's truest form!

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack.......2007-03-09

I loved the movie so had to have the soundtrack. The soundtrack is EVEN BETTER!

5 out of 5 stars Kinky Boots soundtrack is a hit!.......2007-02-26

If you liked the movie, you can't help but love the music. Even if you haven't seen it, you can enjoy Chiwetel Ejiofor's renditions of some classics, with a few new hits. "I want to be evil" is my new personal favorite. Forget how bizarre the title is. BUY THIS SOUNDTRACK!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining tunes for an entertaining movie.......2007-01-10

While some of the Adrian Johnston tracks might remind you of the atmosphere of the movie, and the classics are nice addition (fillers?), it is essentially Chiwetel Ejiofor's voice which you are seeking with this album. "Whatever Lola wants" or above all "I want to be evil" are guaranteed to plant a smile across your face and have you hum in no time. Not to omit Kristy MacColl's "In These Shoes" which could clearly be a fashion anthem.

Seven solid tracks out a full album is what I consider a good buy.

3 out of 5 stars where is the missing milan medley???.......2006-09-14

the milan medley is only on the import version of the kinky boots soundtrack, and the track list above is the list for that version. its a great track, the highlight of the soundtrack and of the movie, and its worth the extra cash to buy the import version. boo to amazon for not correcting this error.

4 out of 5 stars The Kinky Boots.......2006-08-02

Great soundtrack if you love sitting in "The House of Blues" if you know what I mean. Having some songs that have the word "shoes" in it, is quite easy to enjoy. The music is pretty cool and worth the listen to, not worth me listening to it constantly in my CD player, but quite fun to just listen to for a a couple of days in a row. This is highly recommended to you if you the "sit around" type of person and just "chill out" type of person.

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Import Fee!.......2007-03-20

Having read the reviews posted I was cautiously optimistic about ordering the much more expensive import copy of the Kinky Boots soundtrack in order to get the over-the-top finale number... and believe me (and my iTunes playlist) that the extra money was worth it... I'm not sure if people outside the car would say the same thing but I ask you... who wouldn't sing along?!

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie.......2007-01-03

A wonderful range of campy songs and orchestral music. True to the music in the movie, it's a fun listen. Not available in U.S. stores but UK vendor was very responsive.

If Monterrey, Mexico is, indeed, the center of the Latin alternative-music universe, then native sons Kinky are doing a great job of spreading the gospel. The five-piece collective's self-titled debut is an infectious collision of wah-wah guitars, pounding dance beats, and home-cooked rhythm and brass. The band injects just enough authentic tang in its music to raise an eyebrow with the traditionalists, while playing songs demented enough to lure in fans of new-school Mexican electro-pop acts like Plastilina Mosh and Titan. Produced by British tastemaker Chris Allison, whose previous clients include Coldplay and the Beta Band, the album floats on a blissful groove throughout, snaking through styles as diverse as retro shout-along funk ("Mas"), slick, Moby-like trance ("The Great Spot"), and Daft Punk-influenced electro ("Ejercicio #16"), without overpowering Kinky's own emerging identity. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars movin music!.......2004-11-11

Oh man, these latin electro fussion sounds are hot! I like to listen to Kinky in the SLK with the top down on a sunny day because it keeps me going 100mph even when I am at a stop light. A music drug of choice!

5 out of 5 stars A great original.......2004-02-06

After listening to their disappointing sophomore album, "Atlas", I was compelled to write about how great Kinky's debut effort actually is. This album is all about unabashed creativity, while not trying to target any specific market. The sound is all over the map - you'd like to put it in some neat little category but it won't fit there. It doesn't fit anywhere, and that's what's great about it. Full of energy, with electric guitars, conga drums, electro-beats, the occasional vocoder, goofy Spanish lyrics, it's hard not to get a buzz listening to this CD. Not only do their songs sound like they could be used in commercials, they ARE used in commercials (ie. "Mas" used for the Nissan Altima). I've seen these guys live and they pumped even more energy into their songs than what was on the CD, which is hard to believe, and this made listening to "Atlas" (which I was initially really excited about) all the more disappointing. Regardless, "Kinky" will stay as one my road-trip favorites for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Another Bumbershoot Endorsement.......2003-09-03

To reinforce the other Bumbershoot reviews, these guys were a revelation! Inventive, high energy, pure shake-your-booty music, which is why I didn't mind the absence of a strong, lead singer. In fact, for these guys, it is a plus because it doesn't distract from the grooves they are laying down. Yes, the on-site store was SOLD OUT of their CDs the minute the concert was over!! So are others in the area, which helps explain why a bunch of us have stampeded here.

5 out of 5 stars Kinky rocked big time at Bumbershoot.......2003-09-03

OK, to be honest -- I haven't heard this CD. So this is a recommendation for the band, not the CD.

I wanted to mention that Kinky really had the crowd rocking at Bumbershoot 2003 in Seattle. REALLY rockin'.

Kinky had the crowd going better than any other I saw -- even some big names. There is a TON of great music at Bumbershoot so it really says something when a crowd reacts to a band so positively.

I'd guess that most people had not heard of Kinky but they instantly liked them. It was one of those great scenes.

The music I heard them play kind of defies category but think techno-dance with a Mexican flavour. If you're tired of the same-old, give Kinky a listen! I'm going to.

The members of Kinky and their instruments were apparently caked in sludge during the recording of Reina, when a Southern California landslide barreled through their recording studio. Fortunately for us, the resulting album is anything but muddy. The third release from the Monterrey Mexico quintet, Reina is packed full of Kinky's eclectic sound; electronic samples, funk, jazz, hip hop, a killer bass line, accordion, guitar riffs, and Latin beats blended until blissful. Songs on Reina alternate between uptempo dance numbers to more ethereal chill-out tunes ("Sister Twisted" and "And Again and So On" are among the stand-out dance tracks). While not as mind-blowing as their eponymous first release, with Reina the group continues to refine their sound and defies listeners to keep their toes from tapping. --Renata Sadunas

Excelente trabajo!

4 out of 5 stars A little techno, a little...B52s?!.......2006-09-07

While their debut, "Kinky" was all about the danceable techno and their sophmore disc (my favorite, "Atlas") triumphed in infectious, highly melodic pop (lots of it in English) their third spin takes them in both those directions, and then some. After a few tight electrojams and some balladic musings, it's a free-for-all of chronologic and ethnic influences, from 80's quirk bands, The B52s and Men at Work (whose lead singer Colin Hay guests on "Monday Killer" to goose-pimpling effect!), to 90's hard-core femme rapper Nefertiti who engages in a call-and-response-rap with the lead singer on "Lay Back." "Queen (Reina)" is another marvel from the Mexican Talking Heads!

5 out of 5 stars KinkyKINKYkInKY!!!!!.......2006-09-06

I bought this album about three weeks ago at a concert and instantly felt the energy. This is unlike Kinky and Atlas, but it is a good album. You should definately give it a try.

    Product Description

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Here it is: the only Austin City Limits program in over 30 years that has never aired on TV anywhere. For that matter, it s never even been seen anywhere, except by those lucky few who had access to a well-worn copy.

Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys. Long before the Kinkster became a celebrated mystery writer in New York City, and waaay long before he became a candidate for Governor of the Great State of Texas, there was Kinky the country music singer and songwriter of the mid-1970 s. He was a paragon, a veritable pioneer of political incorrectness set to music, and there was nobody quite like him on the Austin music scene (or, for that matter, on the planet).

There he was on the Austin City Limits stage on November 11, 1975, in his finest rhinestone suit with fur-lined guitar strap, bounding through his entire catalogue of double-entendre ditties. The band never sounded better (nor looked, well, weirder). The audience loved every lyrically devilish twist. There was only one problem. They said it couldn t be aired. There s still some mystery about exactly who they were who made the decision to pull the show.
Now "they" have finally allowed this performance to be available.

Often called the Frank Zappa of country music, Kinky Friedman--like Jimmy Buffett--knows how to poke fun at Nashville and pay homage to it at the same time. This first ever best-of collection oddly omits his "Wild Man from Borneo" and "Rapid City, South Dakota," but still captures the most outrageous of his social commentary (racism, classism, anti-Semitism), as well as his more serious songs ("Sold American," "Ride 'Em, Jewboy") about outcasts sad and solitary. Nothing is too gross (the mucus-lined ode to booger-picking, "Ol' Ben Lucas") or off-limits (the invitation to oral sex--"eatin' ain't cheatin'!"--in "Waitret, Please Waitret"). But no matter if one is offended by such references--or those to bestiality and "wetbacks" in "Asshole from El Paso," the hilarious parody of "Okie from Muskogee"--Friedman's importance in the pantheon cannot be denied. As his horrifying, if jaunty, treatment of the University of Texas sniper ("The Ballad of Charles Whitman") proves, he's a Lone Star throw-back to Lenny Bruce--a serious sociopolitical comic who turns a clear mirror on America, warts and all. --Alanna Nash

    Album Description

With his signature cigar always in hand, Kinky Friedman uses country music as a platform to inform, amuse and outrage his audience. Starting in the early Â'70s, Kinky and his band, The Texas Jewboys, broke out of the stifling, often prejudiced, Nashville mold. Last Of The Jewish Cowboys: The Best Of Kinky Friedman, a mixture of live and studio recordings, includes many of his controversial hits, such as Â"Asshole From El Paso,Â" Â"Sold AmericanÂ" and Â"They AinÂ't MakinÂ' Jews Like Jesus Anymore.Â"

Never one for censoring himself, Kinky raised eyebrows with Â"Get Your Biscuits In The Oven And Your Buns In The Bed,Â" Â"Before All Hell Breaks Loose,Â" (off the pop album charting release Kinky Friedman) Â"Waitret, Please, WaitretÂ" (to be said with a lisp) and Â"The Take-It-Easy Trailer Park.

    5 out of 5 stars Majewstic!!.......2007-01-10

A great collection from a multitalented singer, composer, writer and politician. Kinky for President!!!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, Funny, and Worth It.......2006-12-04

Back in the 1970's I used to go see Kinky Friedman and his Texas Jewboys at the Lone Star Café in New York City. He was a pretty entertaining performer. Let's face it, Kinky Friedman can't really sing for beans, but he is one hell of an interesting, funny, and politically interesting songwriter (he was also recently seriously in the race for the governorship of Texas) and there is something appealing about his voice.

Kinky's songs are much like the film Borat (come to think of it Kinky looks a little like Sascha Baron Cohen): you're not always quite sure what he intends, and the lyrics can be pretty offensive, but, they are also funny as hell. Examples: "Waitret [waitress] please waitret come sit on my fate." Or The Ballad of Charles Whitman, a comedy song about Charles Joseph Whitman, the Texas Tower Sniper who in 1966 killed 15 people and wounded 31 "all the while he smiled so sweetly then he blew them out completely...he was settin' up there with his 36 magnum, laughing wildly as he bagged `em." Then again, there is also Sold American, which is about...well, I'm not quite sure what it's about, but it is actually a lovely song.

If you don't know Kinky and his work, then this is a great place to start, and if you do, then this fairly complete collection will bring back a lot of (hopefully good) memories from the 70s.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get any Kinkier than this!.......2006-09-13

Kinky Friedman is a Lone Star treasure. Heck, make that a national treasure. For decades he's written and recorded alternately touching and hilarious country songs that marry traditional country musical values with a uniquely skewed lyrical vision. Lots of country singers claim to be rugged individualists, but Kinky is one singer-songwriter who truly stands apart from the pack.

If you're a long-term fan--and your're in good company, with fans like Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, and Lyle Lovett having covered his songs--you'll find that this collection will bring back a lot of great memories--and laughs.

If you're new to Kinky, this CD is the best entree to his very special world.

5 out of 5 stars Great album for a wonderful cause!.......2006-07-25

I loved the original edition of "Red Hot & Latin" when it came out 10 years ago, but the new re-issue track is even better! Highlights include the new bonus tracks from Brazilian Girls/Kevin Johansen, Kinky, Nortec Collective, and Thievery Corporation....but the older material also holds up quite well.
I still think that Fishbone and Los Fabulosos Cadillacs' collaboration on "What's New Pussycat" is such a blast - those guys should tour together again some time!

This album was truly groundbreaking when it first came out - there were bilingual collaborations from many acts, WAY before this was commonplace. Any fan of Latin, world, or alternative music needs to own this album.....plus, all the proceeds go to fight HIV/AIDS in Latin America and the U.S. Latino community, so it's for a worthy cause.

    4 out of 5 stars Kinda Kool.......2007-06-17

A funky, cool modern feel without out sacrificing any of the quality retro sounds that make lounge music the perfect way to end any day. I own all kinds of music -- rock, jazz, lounge, blues and this CD finds its way to the top of my play list a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Kinda Kinky ~ LOVE IT!.......2007-04-03

This CD puts me in the best of moods, no matter what type of day I've had! I love to listen to it on my way home from work to unwind. It's a great background music CD to have at a party too. My friends had never heard of it before, so they were impressed!

an absolute must have, when the top is down, and you're heading out. Riveria Rondezvous should be played while the martinis are cold!!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, how kinky!.......2006-08-07

I love this stuff. Kinda Kinky is the best track. I heard it on VH1 All Access and loved it, but didn't know who did it. I finally found out today and listened to the samples on iTunes. I love it now. W2G Ursula 1000!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2005-10-17

Great all-around fun party music like all other Ursula.
A little uneven/disjointed, but that's maybe just because I prefer
the long arc of a 70-minute uninterrupted mix.
After Ursadelica and All Systems Go Go, I'd place this one third before The Now Sound. I wrote to Urula BTW and found out there's a new one expected in November.

      Album Description

Who said "They ain't making Jews like Jesus anymore"? It was, of course, country music's resident iconoclast Kinky Friedman. These days, you'll find more Kinky Friedman books in bookstores than Kinky Friedman records in record stores. We're trying to change that by issuing his historic second and third LPs together on one CD. The second LP included the now-classic They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore, as well as Kinky's version of Billy Swan's hit song Lover Please (Rock-a-Billy Swan had served an apprenticeship with Kinky). By the time of the third LP, Kinky was on Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue and had moved to Dylan's record label. Dylan gave him a song he had yet to record, Catfish (dedicated to the great baseball pitcher Catfish Hunter), Eric Clapton was on hand to play guitar, and Ringo Starr did a narration on one song. It was an all-star event, and, like the second LP, has never been reissued in Europe.

Top notch packaging as usual from the German 'Bear Family' label.

      5 out of 5 stars Love Kinky.......2006-11-04

Great CD. Never realized Kinky was so good. I play this CD for friends who are hearing it for the first time and get roars of laughter from the leadoff title tune. Its a hit with both Jews and gentiles.Later cuts display wonderful musicality by Kinky and his Texas Jewboys If we were Texans we would vote for Kinky for governor.
