Anyone who's been blindfolded and left to navigate a space by touch rather than sight will already have at least a passing familiarity with the work of the Album Leaf, solo project of über-instrumentalist Jimmy Lavalle. With the Album Leaf, Lavalle moves from the punk rock of his earlier bands, Swing Kids and the Locust, to the post-rock purveyed by his other current band, Tristeza. Using the typical tools of his kinder, gentler trade--tasteful percussion, gossamer guitar, and minimal electronics--he creates new forms and structures in his entirely instrumental songs, and makes listening a synesthetic experience. Songs like the aptly titled "Story Board," textured with field recordings of wind and traffic, as well as a conversation between Lavalle and sometimes-engineer Rafter Roberts, conjure different images in a dreamy mental movie. But it's songs like "Asleep," which convey movement as realistically as a gentle shove, that really show off Lavalle's songwriting powers. In One Day I'll Be on Time, open-minded fans of jazz, electronic, indie rock, and hardcore can find something that will almost literally reach out and touch them. --Sarah A. Sternau

I don't know why it has taken me so long to write a review for this. It is, after all, one of the fine albums of all time. And in my opinion this is easily their best album, without a doubt. I wont bore you with explanations and I will leave it to others to dissect the music's virtues for you. I will only add that this is a good album to get a massage to, although a few tracks might be a bit to heavy for that (anything by Loscil would suit this better). But definitely a great chess album. It may take a few listens, but in the end you will not be able to exclude this from your collection for any length of time. Very much a classic composition.

I really like this band alot. Especially the way this guy plays the guitar. Very chill. Good open road music. At first I wanted to compare them to American football, but too technical, and no one really comes to mind either. I had just moved to San Diego and I was able to see them play at a rather intimate venue. They didnt play one song from this album and I was suprised to see how they have changed. All in all, this is a very rewarding CD so go ahead and treat yourself.

The Album Leaf...who needs a pamphlet of Iceland when you have this album. I was bartending at the time that I was given this disc by two great regulars and friends, after countless evenings of making their Georgetown martinis (3/4 Greygoose orange & 1/4 Cointreu, twist or wedge of orange, shaken to skate) and discussing how music is more of a score to our lives rather than just a fleeting interest day by day. So they brought this album for me on their next visit and began to explain the details of Jimmy Lavalle and his friendship with Sigur Ros and Amina, his move from the states to his new found inspiration... Iceland after his enveloping tour and nationwide acceptance. Word.

I could name off various groups that may sound similar or be lumped together in magazine reviews. However, I feel that artists such as this deserve their own independant recognition. The greatest attribute of minimalist, math rock, down tempo, ambient whatever name you prefer is that it's for you. Your thoughts become the lyrics to these tracks. Now there's no doubt for all of us that songs are our own distinct mental bookmarks of a personal time and place, good or bad. This album gives the ability to better recognize that, sometimes even help in regards to your penmanship and starting a new chapter. So if you share a similar perspective to mine, this album is essential and no 30 second sample will give it the justice it deserves. Cheers to my boys for this one, spot on.

Upon listening to Jimmy LaValle's creation, One Day I'll Be On Time, I was soon in a rather surreal state, breaching upon total relaxation, warmth and comfort. Similar to the feeling of getting under the covers, in a rather cold room, and dwelling there for a few minutes. It is simply a wonderful, rather basic and warm feeling. The Album Leaf brings this, though, of course, on mental level rather than a physical level.

Although the album is divided into individual songs, it is clear that the true value of the album is its entirety. It never reaches a monotonous level, which is a positive (and often rare) thing, though it never reverts from the atmosphere present throughout the album, either. Simply put, it is wonderfully balanced.

What else to say? Though I suppose I could speak many more words of the content here, I feel this is album better experienced than spoken about (as many albums). I highly recommend this to anyone with an ear for music.

I was very excited about this album. I have read a lot of reviews and was pretty sure that this was something that I would enjoy. This assumption was correct to a point, but also very wrong. There are a few compositions on this album that are worth while, and then there are some who make me feel like I have trancended into an soundtrack for an 80's movie.

The instrumentals themselves are not anything wonderful either. Very simple and seem to lack any true human emotion. The use of electronics is a little too much for me, I would prefer using acutal instruments... but perhaps that is just my taste.

I would recommend this to someone who has a taste for 80's style electronics or someone who is simply willing to take a chance. Like I stated earlier, a few of the songs on this album are very decent, while others fail to provide anything but slow moving monotanous noise.

If you do not own any rachels albums, I highly suggest you purchase any one of those before taking a chance on this.

          They're both brilliant violinists but in very different genres, and Menuhin by his own admission never learned to improvise (unlike many of today's classical performers): he was trained in the post-Liszt, pre-jazz window when improvisation had died out in classical music and even cadenzas followed the score strictly (if Beethoven didn't write one, play Kreisler's). And it shows, rather painfully. He achieves a brilliant tone but that's about it: he plays these Broadway tunes completely "straight", and any student could do that equally well.

          The CD is worthwhile for its curiosity value, but you'd get much better musical value buying Grappelli's jazz and Menuhin's classical recordings separately.

          Music just does not get any better than this CD! I am a musician and hearing these two artists is a thrill. This is a CD for all music lovers. You will not be sorry if you purchase this CD

          You simply can't go wrong with a combination of two of the most talented violinists of our time. This cd is a wonderful showcase for them both and the choice of music is the greatest classics. It's a fun, winner of a cd.
