Early CD by AC/DC and I think one of there best, Angus Young proves once again that he is a guitar god, his guitar solo's in A Whole Lot Of Rosie is superb. If your a AC/DC fan this is a must have.

This is one of my all time favorite albums (yes I have it on vinyl). Bon Scott is in his element and delivers one of the best live performances of all time. A must have for AC/DC fans!
Feels like you were really there.......2007-01-18
Ac/Dc is a very rare breed of band that never lets you down...you always know what to expect,which is great blues based rock at a super high volume with some great guitar playing and some great screaming vocals...this live CD "If You Want Blood" is no exception to that.
It includes 10 great rock and roll classics played live,with lots of crowd participation. What sets this CD apart from their next live album recorded many years later on the "Razor's Edge" tour,is that this feels much more intimate,like you were front row in a small arena right in the middle of the high volume onslaught. I like this,whenever you make a live album that feels like you were there it can be considered a success.The later live album feels much more thought out and commercial and it didn't feel spontanious at all. I much prefer this one,"If You Want Blood"...the band was very hungry for success and was touring for the "Powerage" album...the only complaint I have is that they didn't include a lot of songs that I think would have went over better...in particular Sin City,TnT,Dirty Deeds,and It's A Long Way To The Top...this is a great CD to pop in the car and crank to 10 and imagine being there watching this classic band tearing through some awesome rock and roll...if you are a hard core ac/dc fan you should already have this,if not go out and grab it now...if you are new to the band,buy a few of the studio albums first,mainly Back In Black,Highway To hell,High Voltage,and even Powerage...once you know the songs in the studio versions you'll be able to appreciate the live versions in a whole new way...one song in particular "The Jack" has completely new lyrics live as opposed to the studio version (I prefer the studio version but then again,I like being subtle,but the live version is great too)...this CD also includes the live version of "Whole Lotta Rosie" and one of my favorites "Rock And Roll Damnation"...this is another in a long line of triumphs for this great band and includes a GREAT guitar solo that shows what Angus can do and some great crowd interaction with the great Bon Scott
The Upside - very well produced live album,feels very intimate like you were there..includes some great classics like "Whole Lotta Rosie" "Problem Child" "Rock And Roll Damnation","hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be","High Voltage" and more...great booklet also comes with the remaster version with lots of great pictures and some cool stories
The Downside - missing some obvious hits like "TnT" and "Dirty Deeds" (they included 'Rocker' from the dirty deeds album but not the much more popular title track,not sure why) and "Jailbreak" which would have been a treat to hear Bon sing that one live..and again,no bonus tracks for the remaster version which would have been a nice treat to us fans
The Bottom Line - the best live collection of Ac/Dc songs so far...start with the studio versions and then crank this one up to 10 and relive a great concert...Ac/Dc is timeless and classic...go buy this one...donutman says so!!!

Originally released in 1978,this live album came out after AC/DC had put out four lp's and just prior to 'Highway To Hell'.Ten full-throttled tracks of blistering in-your-face heavy rock&roll as only AC/DC can do it.Used to have the cassette of this lp,but it is great to have it on CD.Was nice to hear Bon Scott-versions of "Rif Raff","Bad Boy Boogie","Problem Child",the awesome "Whole Lotta Rosie"(my favorite of the entire disc),"High Voltage" and "Let There Be Rock" once again.Essential.

Getting the two most personable voices in jazz to sing an hour's worth of George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess (Ella doing all the female parts, Satchmo all the male) was a good idea, but not quite as great as it sounded. Armstrong savors the down-and-dirty Charlestonisms that inspired the cadences of the music and lyrics, and they fit his happy rasp like an old shoe; Fitzgerald, conversely, sounds almost prissy every time she has to sing the word "ain't," though her melodic genius gets Gershwin's bold, supple tunes over. The arrangements are full-throttle Broadway, with a few leaps into Dixieland (including some fine Armstrong trumpet solos), but the disc works best when the vocalists break character and let their jazz side out. --Douglas Wolk

"Porgy and Bess" has just opened (with some controversy) in London's West End, though as a musical and not as an opera as it was originally conceived. Reviews have been promising and I aim to go down and see it soon. I decided to listen to this CD to put myself in the mood. I hadn't listened to it for years and I'd completely forgotten how good it actually is. Ella's voice blends with Louis' perfectly and Russell Garcia's orchestration gives them a dreamy landscape to perform against. I have one or two other CDs by Louis and Ella but this one is by far my favourite. The CD opens with "Overture" and its orchestral performance of classics like "Summertime", "I Wants To Stay Here", "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'" and "It Ain't Neccessarily So" set the tone nicely, leaving one ever so keen for the vocal versions. Louis Armstong has a very rough tone to his voice but the emotion he packs with it is moving, most especially on the mournful "Bess, Oh Where's My Bess?" And we get all this and Louis' wonderful trumpet playing too?
Gershwin and Gershwin must be among the top composers of the last century and this opera showcases their talents more than anything I've heard. Ella and Louis are peerless as a vocal duo and though I doubt the West End performance will capture the magic in the same way they did, I still remain very keen to go see it. Is it opera or is it a jazz performance? I don't really know. I just know that I love it. And strongly recommend it.

Two thousand five hundred musicians have recorded "Summertime" --- it's a classic. (I bet most Americans can name Janis Joplin and no other singer.) As for "Porgy and Bess," the folk opera from which "Summertime" springs, it's such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone ever had a harsh word to say about it.
But after its premiere in 1935, no less than Duke Ellington said, "It has grand music and a swell play, but the two didn't go together. It does not use the Negro musical idiom --- the times are here to debunk Gershwin's lampblack Negroisms."
A quarter of a century later, the producers of the film version had trouble assembling a cast. Harry Belafonte rejected their offer to play Porgy. Sidney Poitier took the part --- and wished he hadn't. Poitier later wrote that the movie insulted black people; when he chose clips of his best performances for his tribute at the American Film Institute, he picked nothing from "Porgy and Bess."
And in 1985, when Grace Bumbry was a sensation as Bess in a Metropolitan Opera production, she slammed the opera: "I thought it beneath me, I felt I had worked far too hard, that we had come far too far to have to retrogress to 1935."
All that may be. All I know is that I have, in a long life, rarely been confronted with more genius than in the Fitzgerald/Armstrong recording of "Porgy & Bess." Set aside the achievement of George and Ira Gershwin in transforming DuBose Heyward's novel into a folk opera. Let's just focus on Armstrong and Fitzgerald, who were at the peak of their popularity when this record was made in 1957.
"Summertime" --- the first song --- sets the tone. A baleful horn figure, then violins. And then Armstrong's trumpet: slow, steady, dignified. But wait --- here comes a slurred note. And a cool little improvisation. Just enough of each. Very tasty.
Fitzgerald sings a verse. She is cool and formal. A lady. Not to be taken lightly. Now it's Armstrong's turn. Tender, but let's not kid ourselves --- this is not singing as others define it. This is melodic speech: rough, gutteral. And thus he is ideally cast: His Porgy may have his charms, but he'll have to stretch to keep Bess.
And so it goes throughout the CD. Trumpet mastery --- Armstrong has dazzling control. His tone is bright, but never shrill; there's a warmth in his playing no one else could produce. And Fitzgerald is just a study in inevitability; to hear her is to wonder how anyone could sing these songs any other way.

The fusion between the great two voices and the orchestra is just brilliant. Very good brass and violins that accompany Fitzeralds and Armstrongs magic voices leaves you with your mouth open.

Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13
I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.
Really 2.5.......2006-07-25
SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"
Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29
According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13
I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.
Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23
It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).
In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.
Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.
Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15
It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!
Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05
It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

What a rush!.......2006-08-09
This was one of the first Rolling Stones albums I ever heard back in the early Seventies, and I loved it from the start. I didn't have much to compare it to at the time, but what I enjoyed about it - and still do - is the sheer adrenalin rush. From the first adolescent scream to the last it doesn't let up. When I listen to it today - and it still gets as much play as Get Yer Ya-Yas Out or Stripped - its precisely because that's what I'm looking for. The youthful exuberance of loud, fast music. It gets me excited, as opposed to aesthetically satisfied, and why else listen to live albums?
I've come to prefer live albums in recent years - I used to detest them. Most of them aren't for intensive listening, I find, with interminable guitar solos, but for background music while I work. But this album, I keep for when I'm driving and need to get somewhere fast!
why do people hate this album? .......2006-08-01
this is a good album by the Stones. Admittedly, the sound quality is not so great, and at times, you can't hear the band playing so well over all of the screaming of teenage girls. But this is the Stones when when they were the Rolling Stones! Before Mick Jagger morphed into Tina Turner and when Brian Jones was still alive and with the band. They were still playing rock and roll and R&B music at this point, before they got into playing a lot of "world music". I like this CD and have liked it for years..........
Yeah, I Want it Live.......2006-06-13
This is an absolute stunner of a record. The bad boys of Rock and Roll really go to town with Chuck Berry's "Talkin' About You," and Bobby Troup's "Route 66." The latter being one of the two live songs on the record. The timeless "As Tears Go By," written by Mick and Keith along with group manage Andrew Oldham," has got to be one of the signature songs of a generation. According to my folks, it was the Boomer's big make out song. Hey, I've made out to it too, the song really is timeless. The other Mick and Keith songs that I really like are "Blue Turns to Grey" and "Get off My Cloud." Brian's slide guitar on the live version of "I'm Moving On" is stupendous, in fact the whole record is stupendously fantastic.
When it was all new, and there were no rules............2006-05-06

Admittedly, this album doesn't exactly rate 5 stars, but it's been so maligned I thought it needed a few props because it's not that bad either.
The sound quality & mix aren't that great compared to todays standards (or even 1970's standards...the golden era of live albums) but hey, this was recorded in 1966. I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert on 1960's recordings, but I can't think of any other live rock concert album pre-66 that sounds much better. Those I can think of sound a lot muddier (a Johnny Hallyday disc I have comes to mind.) If you listen to this album with that in mind I think you'll get along with it fine.
I do take exception to dubbing audience cheering overtop the 2 studio recordings (per reports), but again that's a bit of hindsight opinion. In '66 there weren't any "rules" on what a live album should or shouldn't be. To my ears though this aspect wasn't as obvious when listening as some have indicated. I had read about this, but listened to the CD without knowing which songs were involved, and had a hard time telling which ones they were. The other songs have overdubs too (more below) so these didn't stand out much more to me. And even then these were apparently recorded "live" just without an audience. Neither song sounds like a real multi-tracked multi-takes studio album quality recording, more like the band set up their gear on an empty stage and recorded a live version in one take, and then added crowd noise. "Fortune Teller" in particular has a very rushed & loosely imprecise feel to it. So maybe they're "semi-live". At any rate, I doubt many average listeners in '66 realized the difference until it was "declassified" sometime later.
Regarding the vocal overdubs, my general preference on a live recording is no overdubs at all, but again that's assuming decent recording equipment is being used that's capable of capturing all the vocals & instruments reasonably well, and can be properly mixed later on to make the album. In 1966 that wasn't the case. Even the best studios at that time were only using 3-5 track recording machines (what would be considered an entry-level amateur home recording system today) and getting a good mix & levels on all the tracks was difficult, even with the luxury of time to record multiple takes. And in reality, multi-tracking & stereo really didn't start to take off until 1967. Live recording is only more difficult, so it's not surprising if some vocal overdubs were added to the original live masters so you could hear them. And quite likely, if they hadn't overdubbed then fans would've been complaining that "the vocals are so buried in the mix you can't make out the words. Why didn't they fix that?" And again, whatever overdubs exist were recorded in a very live, loose sounding fashion.
To sum it up, to me this is a fun & listenable recording, that makes for an interesting historical peek at some of the more peculiar aspects of '60's British rock. The sound is rough, but the tonal quality & feel are consistent throughout the recording. (Descriptions of it being a collection of live songs, studio cuts & demos is misleading, implying it sounds like a compilation album...it doesn't and plays out like a single live show.) And in my current opinion, this CD has more energy & drive than "Ya-Ya's", though that one definitely sounds better.
High Octane !.......2005-08-22
Recorded at The Royal Albert Hall, this is where the girls flung themselves and clung to Keith and Mick and Brian is seen laughing after the cops push the fans off stage and escort the band offstage.It's very amphetamine Mick and the band at it's best.

BRYAN'S VERY BEST ALBUM..........2006-07-28
... unfortunately, however, this is one of those rare instances where the vinyl version sounds far better than the CD - a terrific recording with incredible deep bass and crisp highs that the CD version doesn't come close to matching... just about every track's a winner here, a far cry from Bryan's current output of recent years (which would seem to suggest that he's almost ready to come out of the closet)...

Bryan, like Michael Bolton, Neil Diamond, Rod Stewart and others, has since sold out and become a ballad singer, but this proud album reflects a very different approach. His talent is showcased here in the songwriting, the raw rock and roll sound and his trademark voice. It's a real treat to play "Fits Ya Good" for those who do not expect to hear a thunderous rock assault from present-day wimp Bryan Adams. If you gravitate toward that live-in-the-studio sound without the over-production, you need this album in your collection.
Jealousy(1981) Establishing His Own Style.......2004-09-25
Canadian rock legend who recently returned with long-selling soundtrack "Spirit" was unknown to the world in 1981 when this second album was released. Japanese label titled this JEALOUSY probably because it was the title of the single for Japanese release. His debut album is quite catchy pop music with varied style just as those of TOTO, Survivor. This album again is catchy power pop album but its arrangement style got closer to what we are well aware of. FITS YA GOOD is such great track which could easily be one of RECKLESS track. COMING HOME has close style of STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART, huge hit from his next album CUTS LIKE A KNIFE. ONE GOOD REASON is great showcase of his groovy stuff. Most amazing is TONIGHT. By this he almost established his own vocal style aptly using subtle keyboard arrangemnt with economized vocal part. So although it did not sell well it has full of hidden explosives that led to his huge success for twenty years.
Recommended for early 80s power pop fans.
The Album that started the "Adams Franchise".......2004-05-26
The best way I look at Bryan Adams' "You Want It, You Got It" was this was the album that launched what I term "The Franchise". This was Bryan Adams' second full album and his second in which in co-wrote the songs with Jim Vallance. Adams and Vallance had collaborated together on Adams self title debut. But it was this album that truly launched 'The Bryan Adams sound' that would dominate the 80s and 90s. In addition, this is where Bryan Adams would start to form a core of studio musicians that would follow him for the next 2 decades. This album would feature Tommy Mandel on keyboards and Mickey Curry on drums. Mandel and Curry would become a staple of Adams' albums for the 80s and 90s. This was also the first of four studio albums in a row that Bryan would produce with Bob Clearmountain. Clearmountain is best known as one of the best studio mixers in the music business. All of these factors would launch "The Franchise" for Bryan Adams and set the tone for his musical development in the 80s.
This album being Adams' sophomore effort is a less commercial effort than the more familiar works that follow, but the quality of the music is there. There surprisingly is a lot of depth on this particular album. The song "Last Chance" is a very interesting track because there is a Saxaphone integrated into the music. The inclusion of a Sax is a rare thing on an Adams album which normally is usually loaded with lots of guitars and keyboards. You'll also hear Mandel's keyboards quite a bit on this song - as well as on the track "Lonely Night". The other thing is that the Adams/Vallance songwriting connection really gets off to a good start on this album. There is some nice depth of tracks "Lonely Nights", "Fits Ya Good", "Tonight" and "No One Makes It Right".
Some interesting stuff is on this album There is a reference in the track "One Good Reason" that says 'Now that Ronnie's in the Office...' - a slight political jab put into the song by Adams and Vallance. The track "Don't Look Now" has a distinct Jackson Browne feel to it - it does remind of "Running on Empty". 'Don't Look Now' also reminds me as a pre-quel to another Adams classic called 'This Time' that will follow on the third album. The original version of "Fits Ya Good" is on this album which is more uptempo and harder edged than the version found on the 1997 'Unplugged' album. The song "Jealousy" is also something a little different than you will hear on many Adams albums. Curry and Mandel's drumming and keyboards really shine on it this song. Nice bass work followed by some cool guitars mark the start of "Tonight" and some bold lyrics that say "Who you gonna run to now that your (butt) is on the line..." followed by some great range in Adams' vocals.
It is also worth noting that I think Clearmountain and Adams do a great job at ordering the tracks on the album. "Lonely Nights" is the perfect opening song. "No One Makes It Right" is the perfect finale to the album. "One Good Reason" has that feel of being a #2 track. Even "Last Chance" is perfectly slotted as the next to last track on the album. I wouldn't change a thing in terms of the ordering of the tracks. The first and last songs are the best 2 on the album - especially "No One Makes It Right" - which might sound like that emotional song you would hear at a teenage prom, but I still never get tired of it.
The disappointments are the title track (kind of weak by my standards). The liner notes are very thin - they contain no lyrics and do match up the credits to the song very nicely.
Most fans starting to build a Bryan Adams collection probably won't start with this album, but I would say why not? This album will also give you many great singles that have been omitted on the greatest hits and live albums. Highly recommended!
Before the Buzzards Started to Circle.......2004-05-13
I have to tell you that in college, we wore out this Bryan Adams (then)album. Little did we know in '81/82, that in a few years, he would be a superstar. Little did we know he would become a Michael Bolton ballad singing, adult contemporary chart topper, with the likes of Sting and Barbra Streisand! Little did we know that "Coming Home" on "You Want It, You Got It" was more like what we would hear in the future, not the rocking "Lonely Nights".
This album was before all that, before the buzzards were flying around his musical body of work. Bryan Adams rocks on this CD! All are good tunes, yes, even "Coming Home".
I had the chance to see Bryan on this tour as well, and these songs were great live. Obviously, hard core Bryan fans want this to fill out the collection. This is also a chance for a few of us to listen back and think what might have been.
The title track along with "Don't Look Now' are stand outs.
There are other tunes from some of Bryan's other CD's that are good, please don't get me wrong. I even own a lot of them. I just think this one is an excellent example of some of his better musical output.
Bryan has had what?... about 25 top 40 hits? My guess is about half of those hits were ballads. My hope is one day, Bryan will pop in this CD, and think about making something along the lines of "You Want It, You Got It". There are some rockin' tunes on the disc that some folks have not been exposed to. It's worth the time to listen to this one.
Don't hate me Bryan, I just like this one the best.

Yeah, I Want it Live.......2006-06-13
This is an interesting record that I don't play very often. I guess it just doesn't have the real feel of a live record like the bootleg "LiveR than You'll Ever Be," and the official "Get Yer Ya-Ya's out. In fact two of the songs, "Fortune Teller" and "I've Been Loving You" were actually recorded in the studio with the applause overdubbed. I've heard the band weren't happy with this record, though I don't know how true this is. Anyway, this is my least favorite Stones early Stones record, but still it's worth four stars, because if you compare it to other groups who were recording at the time, it's head and hands above them all. Gosh, who do you compare the Rolling Stones with other than themselves? Yeah, I want it live, I just like the later live ones better, especially "LiveR." Still this record is a keeper.
Jeez, people, lighten up!.......2005-12-24
Maybe this is my punk sensibilities coming through on this but compared to many things out there THE SOUND QUALITY IS NOT THAT BAD! Come on people, this was the 1966, you can't expect them to have mastered all the arts and technologies behind recording albums. Either way, it's irrelevant, because this album is one of the most rockin' live albums I've heard in quite some time. Yeah, so they did some overdubs. Yeah, two songs are actually studio tracks. I don't think that diminishes the quality of the album. It's so raw and ready to kick your butt. It showcases the fact that before they became, along with U2, one of the ugly behemouths of concert gluttony, they were real and raw and had Brian Jones rather than Ron (who?) Wood. Sorry, Stones fans, but everything they did after Jones SUCKS save Let It Bleed and Exile on Mainstreet, and this album only reaffirms it.

There is no reason to own this album because the music is drowned out by screaming girls and some of this was recorded in the studio with screaming overdubbed (WTF?) - AVOID. The worst live album by the Stones and maybe the worst live album ever.
Great music, but severely flawed.......2002-04-19
I agree that this album is a true relic of the works of the Roling Stones. The songs "Under My Thumb" and "Get Under My Cloud" were played beautifully-as if they were played in one setting and time.
Of course, "Lady Jane" is a true classic that is etched in my mind for years to come. Here,g uitarist Keith Richards played a gentle lead-accompanied by one of the greatest instrumentalists of rock history-Brian Jones (may he rest in peace), using a dulcimer that was audiable even while playing live.Let us not forget the R&B classic "Not Fade Away";of course Mick Jaggar played his heart out(as usual).Throughout the rest of the CD, bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts(banging the cymbals as always)did their parts quite well throughout the entire Cd-as well as Richards,Jagger, and Jones.And who can forget "Satisfaction" and "Time is on My Side"-considering being performed circa 1966.
This is all of the good points that I can find while listening to this relic. With the exception of the first two tracks, ALL of the other songs were fragmented together. This "fragmentation" job of editing was pathetic.If one could piece together several tracks of different authenticity, he could had done a better job-even to the 1960s standards.
Also, the "opening drum sequence(7 seconds)" before "The Last Time" is what I am talking about. That drumming sequence,before the first three chords of "The Last Time" sounded like the opening sequence of "I Ca't Get No Satisfaction" instead of the latter.
I also share my fellow reviewers'comments on tracks four and five. I thought that this was suposed to be a TOTALLY LIVE album.What a dissapointment.
Personally, despite the numerous flaws in the production, this CD is still a fine relic that you can capture the Roling Stones while they were still getting started in their fine career.I hope that other Rolling Stones fans will concur.
Unnecessary.......2002-04-05
There was never any need to release this nor own it,nor re-master it on CD. I believe that initially it was only a US release that never came out in Britain. Only 5 songs were actually recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall show that the credits claim it's from. The rest are demos with dubbed in crowd noise,sometimes louder than the music itself.The version of "Fortune Teller" is really good though, and you can turn off one channel and here it minus the screaming girls.The actual live cuts were recorded by someone who had no clue how to record a live rock band at all;and at times most of the instruments are inaudible, and all we here are Mick and Keith's vocals. Obviously this was a record label cash in attempt, and maybe one of the worst live albums ever made.

If you are truly a fan of 70's soul, this album is a must have. Every single song on this album is note worthy. There are no second rate fillers. The silky smooth soul of the Detroit Emeralds is unmatchable. Although there were many great soul groups of the 70's, I would have to put Detroit Emeralds in the top 5, hands down.
Criminally Overlooked Albums.......2005-01-24
These lps from 1971 and 1972 represent Detroit Emeralds' peak work. The group created in these albums a sound that was both uptown and down-home: they combined an urban sheen with southern soul. The tracks have pulsing rhythms; great harmonies; clean, layered but not over-produced arrangements that included brass, and occasionally string, flourishes. If a listener is unfamiliar with the sound of the Detroit Emeralds, it might be said that they were less glossy than the Philly sound of the day, less pop-oriented than Motown, less ethereal than early 70s Marvin Gaye. The Detroit Emeralds had a grittier, bluesier, soulful sound more akin to the work of the Dramatics or Al Green.
The group had four Top 10 hits on the R&B singles charts, most from these two albums. The albums are very strong and consistent-- I recommend them over the greatest-hits collections that draw heavily on these two releases anyway. By way of background, the Detroit Emeralds started out as a group of four brothers; by 1970, they were down to two brothers-- Abram and Ivory Tilman were joined by James Mitchell. Their backing band was Chapter 8. In 1977 Abram Tilman was the sole original member, and James Mitchell departed to form the Floaters. The new line-up released a 1977 album that was far weaker than the two albums reviewed here, and in fact it contained a reworked, unnecessary version of their best track, "Feel The Need In Me." Another album in 1978 was equally forgettable, with the exception of the storming dance number "Let's Get Together." By far, their best line-up of singers and songs is contained in the two albums on this disc.
A great double album CD set by a great rock group........1999-07-18
Almost all the titles have tremendous rhythm and mood. The cut "Feel the Need in Me", in my view, is one of the great rock tunes ever recorded.The stereo duplication is terrific. I highly recommend these CD's to any fan of rock and soul.
One caution: put on your headphones; the neighbors will flood your home to listen if they hear these cuts over your speakers!
Hot horn section and rhythm-Motown without Motown.......1998-07-18
The Detroit Emeralds enjoyed great success and popularity, especially in the Ohio/Michigan area. I am unsure of the overall sales of this album, but can attest to its popularity in Ohio.
..The hottest cut is probably Feel the Need. Feel the Need has some hot vocals that harness a raw, R&B quality that is unforgettable. The horn section (unknown-I no longer have the album and was young and carefree, so I am not sure if it was the band or studio group with the horns). Nonetheless, the horns are hot and the driving rhythm will not disappoint.
The woman depicted on the original LP cover was a real knockout!!
