Product Description
The UK psychedelic band's long awaited followup to 1995's 'Acid Yantra'. Recorded at Third Eye studios (where their legendary 1990 debut album was recorded) with the same philosophy as their previous efforts, it's full of trademark Sun Dial psych sounds.

Banged out in a hurry for the 1964 Christmas market, Beatles for Sale sometimes sounds it, loaded with ill-conceived covers and some of John Lennon's most self-loathing lyrics. On the other hand, the people doing the banging-out were the Beatles, whose instincts for what worked musically were so strong that they could basically do no wrong--any record that has "Baby's in Black," "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party" and the delectable "Eight Days a Week" on it is only "minor" in the most relative sense. And, though their voices had been frazzled a bit by constant touring, they revved them up for some joyous shouting, and indulged their fondness for American country in subtle, playful ways. --Douglas Wolk

4 out of 5 stars THE BEATLES "COVERS" ALBUM.......2007-05-31

5 out of 5 stars "I nearly died...".......2007-05-18

Beatles for Sale by The Beatles is considered their worst album but I truly enjoyed this clever mix of country influenced, blues rocking disc. Mr. Moonlight is not their best cover but the way John Lennon sings and belts this song sure as hell makes up for it. No Reply is my favorite and best track, even the band Garbage stole a line and the hook from this song. Other songs I cannot get enough of are: I'm A Loser, Baby's In Black, Rock and Roll Music, I'll Follow the Sun, Eight Days A Week, and Every Little Thing. Ringo sounds absoutely adorable on the track, Honey Don't. George gets a chance to shine as well on the closing track, Everybody's Trying to be my Baby. I love the way George attacks this song both vocally and performance wise, and Paul continues to grow with his song writing ablities. Beatles for Sale is defintely an album every new Beatles fan should have. Have a ball with this one!

5 out of 5 stars John owns this album.. perhaps the only Beatle's album where John was truly the star.......2007-04-22

John had the most growth on this album.. (that is of course in my opinion)
Songs like No Reply and I'm a Loser are wonderful. The lyrics are so powerful. Lennon's voice coupled with McCartney's harmonizing is great. Harrison's aggressive guitars on No Reply and Ringo's strong back beat make it a great song. John is really on target here. It's a tribute to John's early days with the Beatles.

3 out of 5 stars For once I prefer the American release.......2007-04-09

I received Beatles '65 as a Christmas present on December 25th, 1964. Several months later a relative in the UK sent me Beatles For Sale as a birthday present. I must have played '65 many times as I have a second vinyl copy, purchased in 1980.

After the stellar A Hard Day's Night this record is mildly disappointing. From the very beginning I always felt that the Beatles' original compositions surpassed the covers. This is not a knock at the quality of the covers. The Motown songs covered on With The Beatles are uniformly excellent. The lesser known songs covered on Please Please are also first-rate. It is, rather, that I want more Beatles music. The reversion to six non Beatles tunes is therefore a regression.

The cd starts off promisingly with three dark originals. Rock and Roll Music is a good tune, well done. Sun and Moonlight keep things going nicely. However, Kansas City sounds like filler. It destroys my flow and my mood. Side two is choppy. I love Eight Days, Every Little Thing and What You're Doing. Unfortunately these excellent Beatles songs are surrounded by a couple of Carl Perkins songs that, well, honestly, I do not like! I now realize why I tended to play Beatles `65 and not Beatles For Sale. Side one of the North American vinyl is superb - No reply, I'm a Loser, Baby's in Black, Rock and Roll Music, Follow the Sun, Mr. Moonlight. Side two is marred only by Honey Don't. We also add She's a Woman and I Feel fine and drop the other Perkins song and the Buddy Holly tune Words of Love. Sounds like a good deal to me! This is a case of less being more. Therefore, three stars for original UK release and four for Beatles 65.

5 out of 5 stars Very underrated album......but still a classic........2007-03-28

Many have said that this has been their "least" favorite Beatles album when compared to the rest of their amazing catalogue, but by doing that, many tend to overcriticize the content on this particular album.

Instead, the album should be judged in context to the period the Beatles were in during this time. It is a highly known fact (as evident by the album cover) that the Beatles were simply too tired from touring, appearances, starring in a movie, and the constant rush of having to produce albums every six months or so.

In fact, even though the previous album "A Hard Day's Night" featured all original songs, the Beatles were so tired that they resorted to doing cover songs again to relieve themselves the pressure of writing more songs than they have to. Despite the weariness, the Beatles still created very good music as they work well under pressure.

In short, these are the tracks that I think are worth listening to (no particular order)

"No Reply"
"I'm A Loser"
"Baby's In Black"
"I'll Follow The Sun"
"Eight Days A Week"
"Words Of Love"
"Every Little Thing"

Surely, all the rest of the tracks are also worth mentioning but if you want a good sample of what songs set the tone of the album, then take a closer look at these tracks. Just listening to these tracks, you begin to appreciate just how wonderfully talented the Beatles were as musicians despite showing their wear and tear.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely great!.......2007-06-26

Justin is pure music genius. An artist. And his band brings it all together perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD.......2007-06-17

I LOVE this CD! I wasn't expecting to like it as much or more than their Foiled CD. I love this band, and their music really hits home for me. I am so glad that I made the purchase and will probably wear this CD out.

5 out of 5 stars HISTORY FOR SALE - BUY IT !.......2007-05-29

This album, 'History For Sale', is exactly that, one man's very personal thoughts, experiences and life details (history), written down, set to music, recorded in a studio, put on a CD, and presented for sale to anyone who wants to buy it.
The very personal nature of the lyrics on this album is the kind of stuff a normal person would write only in their private journal and keep to themselves for reflection. Consequently, at times listening to this album does give you the privileged but uneasy feeling that you would get when being made privy to the details of someone's personal life. Nevertheless, Justin is an artist that is willing to make us privy to his 'history', however uncomfortable, painful or personal it may be. Which results in what any great artist in any medium ultimately aspires to achieve; to bring out of oneself something unique, beautiful and meaningful from a personal place which touches others in a profound way. Now, while this material tends to be a bit on the melancholy side you must recognize it for what it is; candid artistic expression, this stuff is NOT contrived. And while the lyrics can be melancholy, they can at the same time be very uplifting. If you've ever seen Blue October perform live you know without question that Justin's music comes from his very heart and soul. Justin's performance and the music is so emotional and powerful that the audience is at times actually moved to tears, and I'm not talking about teenage girls. It is also plain and very nice to see that not just Justin but all of Blue October are very passionate about their music. There really is no other band in America like Blue October, they are an important band, and one we should consider a very welcome alternative to the vast sea of insignificant bands deemed as acceptable listening by the mainstream powers that be. Finally, while lyrically this album may be somewhat avant-garde it is also very accessible and in the end very enjoyable to listen to. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT pass this one by.

3 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad.......2007-05-28

There are some really good songs on this cd ("calling you" is my favorite), but other songs aren't that great. if you're a fan of blue october, it would be good to add to your collection, but if you like just a few of their songs, it would be better to buy them individualy online.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to any lyrical collection.......2007-03-17

Honestly. If you are looking for a album that captures the ups and downs of any real love filled relationship. This is your remedy. Plus did I mention that Justin has put together some very catchy rythems, and a musical master piece. This album isn't for the shallow type. But with songs like Calling You, and Inner Glow really capture some good feelings in life. And then you have songs like Chameleon Biy and Amazing that dictate imperfections of any person with a dysfuntional social life. All in all. A album you won't ever forget. No matter what parts of it you take from it. There is something here for everyone.

This CD is great, good old fashion HONKY TONK!!!! This CD didn't get much radio time but it is an amazing debut CD from an amazing country artist. Gary Allan has always said that he loves true country and this CD is proof positive of that!!!

5 out of 5 stars used heart.......2006-08-23

I own all of G.A.'s cds this was another great addition. I searched every store I know and could not find it. W/ Amazon it took me 2sec. to locate and 2days to receive!!! I will definately use Amazon more often and am looking forward to more great stuff from Gary Allan!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Debut.......2004-03-12

This album was released in the fall of 1996, and introduced one of my favorite male country singers. Gary Allan understands what true country is, and is not afraid to showcase it on his albums. Hopefully one day he receives the acclaim and attention he deserves. The hit from this album was the ballad "Her Man", and the two other singles were "Forever And A Day" and "Living In A House Full Of Love". The title track is my favorite of the bunch, and the closing "Wake Up Screaming" is another definite highlight. Not his strongest album, but a good introduction to his music, and an overall pretty solid debut album.

5 out of 5 stars inspired performance !!!.......2001-09-02

this collection deserves more than 5 stars.peter maag and the philharmonica hungarica are in top form.this is the best ever of schubert's fifth and eigth i have ever listened to.it is not karl bohm or leonard bernstein or george szell or lorin maazel.
truly the hungarians inspired by maag easily beat all the other top orchestras.
the orchestral texture is transparent with a perfect balance among the string sections ,the woodwind and the brass sections.peter maag obviously loves this music and brings out the heavenly beauty ,the pathos and the monumental dramatic quality of these works.
just listen to schubert's fifth second movement which ends with a heart rending cello phrase.
it is a shame that the well established record companies have not thought it fit to record more of peter maag.in my opinion he is one of the greatest ever conductors.
i will not exchange these performances for any other!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Enhanced Disco Classic.......2007-07-12

Now enhanced by extra tracks, Love For Sale is a really excellent album of 1970s dance/pop music. Besides the two massive hits: the dramatic story song Ma Baker and the hypnotic pulsating Belfast, it also contains other gems like the evocative Plantation Boy with its wistful lyrics and compelling reggae beat, a good enough version of CCR's Have You Ever Seen The Rain? and the title track Love For Sale.

Eurodisco was the sound ruling the airwaves and the dancefloors in 1977 and 1978. Although it gathered a lot of flack from music critics back then, Love For Sale's not a bad album at all whether you look at it from a pop or dance perspective. Unlike today's techno music, these tuneful songs provide sheer listening pleasure while at the same time being the perfect party music. It has also aged surprisingly well, anytime as good as the music of Abba!

3 out of 5 stars hey! Its CAN I BUS!.......2006-07-24

He is not called CAN I BUS OVER HYPE BEATS! He is called CAN-I-BUS, which he can, much better than many emcees in the game. Sure, his flows aren't always the most favorable or the most catchy, but listen close and he says some pretty dope lyrics, and sometimes he spits some lame crap. I ahve never heard an emcee spit 10/10, NONE! Not even Biggie or Pac, Mos Def, Del, Sage, Kool Keith. Maybe Gift of gab, but that's different. Can-I-bus has a style his own, and its very aggro, and he does sound weak on tracks where he is trying to be anything but a rippa or the mad rapper. Sometimes it seems that he gets lost in the biz, wants to be mainstream yet the master of flows. Adding in rhymes about smokin killing. It's all entertainment. His beats have never been that tight, always so so. The beats on this album are tight, they are minimal. He is not the best emcee, and his choruses are weak, but so are a lot of emcees choruses. A chorus is a pretty weak concept anyways. Like Kool Keith said "Don't need no M%$$a F&^%$N Chorus!" If canibus ditched the choruses his stuff would sound that much tighter. Hip hop for sale is not his best album, but its beats are better than the can-i-bus album. It's worth checkin out, it won't get mad play in your ipod or cd player, but its one to own. He is truly an amazing emcee.

4 out of 5 stars The best from one of the illest around!!!.......2006-02-23

By far, this is the best album from Canibus yet!! His other albums, although lyrically top notch, the production has been mediocre at best.
Canibus has really found a pretty good production team which is finally able to match beats with his attack MC style. I own Canibus's other cd's and this one shines like a star.I'm not gonna pick the best songs on this one because they are all better than three stars. Pick it up!!

4 out of 5 stars its alright..........2006-02-04

honestly, this album gets 3 1/2 stars from me...and I've been a lifelong canibus fan...his problem lies in his focus...my favorite canibus albums are mic club, 2000 bc and rip the jacker...can-i-bus was a disaster, as was c-true hollywood stories and mind control...hip-hop for sale is decent, dont get me wrong...but his focus is in the wrong direction...yeah, he is all about making an anti-bling cd using the bling (cover art)...but in the process, he does sound very commercial, and with a handful of lame chorus hooks and subject matter choices, his potential is failed to be reached once again...that is...until the team-up with phoenix orion...def con zero is a better option...however, if you like canibus solo efforts, than I am sure you've been with him project to project...but hip-hop for sale is decent...nothing special.

4 out of 5 stars Canibus puts down the dictionary.......2006-01-10

This is a pretty solid release from Canibus. As others have said, production isnt the best it could be. In my opinion Rip The Jacker (Canibus' release previous to this in 2003) is a much better album overall, especially the production from Stoupe. (who didnt do this album).
On this release Canibus' lyrics have dumbed down a little, it seems to me that he may be doing sort of what Cam'ron did when he signed to Rocafella; Making the lyrics simpler and the subject matter generic. Sell out move or not, you decide. Overall its an above average album, and a good listen. Support your boy hes hungry

4 out of 5 stars A 'BIS FAN FOR A LONGTIME.......2005-12-22

AS A CANIBUS FAN SINCE HIS FIRST LP IN '98(CAN-I-BUS) I'VE GROWN WITH HIM OVER THE YEARS AND THIS LP SINCE HIS '03 LP(RIP THE JACKER)AND HIS DEPARTURE INTO THE MILITARY MAKES A INTRESTING COMEBACK FOR HIS THIRD TIME THIS YEAR. HIP HOP 4 SALE NAILS MOST EMCEES TO THE CROSS HAVING THE INTESITY AND SICK FLOWS EVEN THOUGH SIMPLFIED AND NOT HIS COMPLEXITY RHYME STYLE THAT MOST 'BIS FANS ARE USED TO WHICH SOME WOULD ARGUE IT'S HARD TO LISTEN TOO. THIS LP IS VERY STRONG WITH LIL WEAK POINTS. THE WEAK POINTS ARE PROLLY THE "SO INTO YOU" I KNOW THIS IS A MAINSTREAM LP ON A INDY LABEL LOOK AT THE HYSTERICAL SACASTISM THERE BUT OTHER THAT "SO INTO YOU" THE REST OF THE LP IS FLAWLESS. EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE TRACKS HAD BEEN RELEASED ON A MIXTAPE ENTITLED THE VIRTUVIAN MAN, WHICH WERE JUST ALL THE UNMASTERED VERISON I'M GLAD THEY HAVE MOST OF THE TRACKS ON HERE AND IT HAS MOSTLY ALL BANGERS ON IT. "DEAR ACADEMY" IS A INTRESTING TRACK BECAUSE IT'S LIKE A LONG SHOUT-OUT IN SONG FORM AND HE'S ALSO MAKING FUN OF THE INDUSTRY INAVERTENTLY. WERE NOTABLE TRACKS SUCH AS "BENNY RELIY", "BACK WIT HEAT","DA FACELFIT","SHOW E'M HOW" & "IT'S NO OTHER THAN" MAKE THE LP WORTH COPPING REGARDLESS OF THE IMPETENCY OF OTHER 'BIS FANS WHOM MIGHT DISCOURAGE FROM COPPING. IF YOU LIKE DIFFERENT THEN YOU'LL LIKE THIS LP BY THE CANIBUS-MAN

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Really good and an interesting listen.......2006-03-29

I first heard of Blue October when my local radio station began to play "Calling You" a few years ago. On first couple of listens, I liked it but thought it was a bit sappy. I didn't know if I would be interested in listening to them as a whole CD. Recently, "Hate Me" from their new CD coming out next week has been on the radio and I really dug it. It was definitely painful and was a lot different from Calling You. I decided maybe I should check out "History for Sale." I'm glad I did.

"History for Sale" is not a very happy album in spots. It's full of pain, both present and past, and creates a very melancholy tone which is helped along with occaisonal string instruments. For instance, the CD begins with "Ugly Side" which is a perfect opener for the CD. It brings up the thought of not wanting your significant other to know the bad parts of your life as he sings, "I only want you to see / My favorite part of me, / And not my ugly side." The rest of the CD doesn't hide the ugly side. It shows life, warts and all.

On songs like "Razorblade," we see the death of innocence as people we should be able to trust let us down, "I freaked out, thinking people didn't love." Even in songs that are optimistic, there's this feeling that the singer/song-writer is afraid of trusting too much, of putting himself out there.

Some might write it off as melodramatic drivel, I suppose, but for me, the fact that singer Justin is being blatantly honest the music is more interesting, open and honest than other rock/pop rock out there. Which brings me back to Calling You. Like I said, when I first heard this, I thought it was catchy but sappy. But after "History for Sale" ends with an accoustic rendition of Calling You, what was originally sappy (and possibly a tiny bit stalkerish) instead has become an ode to a relationship that has gotten him above all the sh*t in his life that came before. It's a bright side, something to hang onto, to give the rest of what he's singing about a context.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2003-08-15

This is an excellent cd. I listen to it in my car, my home, and at work. Blue October continues to amaze me. Justin's lyrics have the personal touch that many can relate to. This is just one more stepping stone in the guaranteed famous works of this band.
