This is one of Alice's best but do not be fooled. There are no (extra tracks) on this CD. Still great and worth the price though. To bad they could not replicate the album cover in this format.

This cd came out when Alice Cooper s' prime time was already pass and it is a pity that did not reach the masses, with the only exception of the single "How are you going to see me now".

For me "The Quiet Room" and "Nurse Rosseta" are fantastic songs: very personal, dark and beautifully recorded and sung. Also very good is the rest of the cd.

Alice Cooper recorded excelent cds with his former band "The Alice Cooper Band": Killer, School s Out, Billion Dollar Babies are the classic albums by a great line up of musicians, some who never came back from their past behaviour and payd the price. One last thing: "From the Inside" is dedicated to Keith Moon who did not survive.

I've loved this Cd since it first came out! Sometimes hard to find. A look at A.C. when I believe for a joke put himself in a Mental Hospital to mainly dry out from booze, then they would not let him out. Ha Ha...

Cooper rebounds in a big way with "From The Inside" a concept album written about his experience in an institution going through alcohol rehab. The problems admitted in "Lace And Whisky" are dealt with on "From The Inside". Cooper meets a plethora of interesting (yet disturbed) characters on the "inside" and he takes the listener along for the ride. This used to be my all time favorite Alice Cooper album, but not having listened to it in a long time it has not aged quite as well as I remember it. The music sounds very dated in places, more so than other Cooper albums from the period. Still it is a career highlight and was his best album since "Nightmare". Bernie Taupin is on board this time as Alice's writing partner (along with Dick Wagner) and his influence is felt throughout the disc. In fact pretty much all of Elton John's backing band along with members of Toto and Chicago play on the disc. It would be very easy to picture Elton John singing some of these songs, especially ones like "Jackknife Johnny". The album produced the hit single "How You Gonna See Me Now" which had to be one of the original power ballads, and is one of Alice's best. The topic of celebrity rehab is explored in the songs "Wish I Was Born In Beverly Hills" (which he is doing as an encore on his current tour), and the grand finale to the album "Inmates". "Nurse Rosetta" is an odd one with Cooper once again asserting his Christian values while at the same time lusting after one of his nurses and the inner conflict it causes. More introspection comes with "The Quiet Room" and one of Coopers all time best rockers "Serious". The lyrics on this one are great and serve as a full confession of Alice's problems. The other songs on the disc describe various characters that Alice meets on the "inside". This is Cooper's most personal album of his career and remains one of his best.

kills me it's her only english speaking album.
makes me wish I studied French harder in high school or really learned Spanish way back when I was involved with my South American amour 20 plus years ago...

one day Pausini will do another album in English I hope and suspect, but until then, let it suffice to say that if you like pop romantic melodies and lyrics this is as good as it gets...

What prompted me to write this is that just walked into the other room and heard the TV playing a song of hers I had never heard called "One More Time" which is the final song from a Kevin Costner film from 1999 called "Message in a Bottle" and while I missed the film and just caught the song during the closing credits I knew it was Laura imediately. Interestingly, this song in English is not on her other albums and the only other english speaking song not on "Fromthe Inside" that I am aware of is "Go the extra mile" which is one of her all time best songs, in my opinion.

Listen to her stuff, she was Grammy Latin artist of the year 2 years ago, for a reason.

I love Laura. She's got an amazing voice, as powerful and bright as Celine Dion's but also with the ability to purr softly and convey tons of emotion. Her Escucha album completely floored me, I listened to it over and over again, and the one thing that I missed was really understanding the lyrics (not that it made any difference...). So buying her English debut was an easy call.

The first time I listened through it, I was disappointed (well...mad), though. Another reviewer put it thusly: "it's as if the people handling her english songs don't quite know which ones are best for her". That's for sure, and moreover, they didn't do her any justice in arranging & producing the songs that they DID give her. Laura is great, and there are tracks on this disc where she carries them, but there are also silly mis-steps. Lyrics that just don't work, moments where you know the producer voicecoached her into certain deliveries (how they managed to make her sound like Natalie Imbruglia in one song, I'll never understand), and when you've got one of the finest voices in international pop music, you don't overdub her three times or throw a GOSPEL CHORUS behind her!

Having said that, once you get past the surprise at what her producers did wrong, you can focus on what Laura does right, and she sounds great. This is a good addition to the Pausini catalog, and makes her a little more understandable to people who just don't get why you'd listen to someone singing in Italian or Spanish if you don't speak the language. What I'd really love to hear from Laura is another English album, perhaps a mix of good originals and some carefully selected covers, and maybe a duet or two in there to boot. I found out about her through her appearance with Michael Buble, and fell in love with her voice in that duet.

I was a little concerned about what I should expect from this first English album from Laura Pausini, though from certain previous performances she gave in english (One more time, the first mile etc), she showed that she can easily respond to the task. After all, she is capable of singing in various different languages!
Her unbelievable voice once again lifts you up. But nevertheless, no matter how good her performance is, there is no comparison with her Italian songs! Even a couple of older italian songs included here in their english version, they do not feel the same when you listen to them... Italian language, makes a lot of difference. So even if I would recomend this album to anyone, people who want to find out more about Laura, should get started with one of her Italian -or maybe spanish now she's got the Grammy for one of them (Escucha)- albums.
Which one? I couldn't say... I like them all the same. Perhaps "The Best of Laura Pausini, E Ritorno Da Te" which includes a lot of her hits, may be a good idea.

If you prefered the Beatles' Abby Road to Rubber Soul, if you prefered the Police's Syncronicity to Reggatta de Blanc, you will enjoy this for the same reasons; tension and discord at the end of a great band's flight, making for a wildly dynamic album that's full of surprises. Previous albums wallowed in redundant, sloppy, sanctimonious goth sillyness and far too many cuts that were simply self-indulgent wastes of the listeners' time. In this Burning From the Inside, every cut is a master-stroke and no two are similar. It ranges from profound to wacky to haunting to beautiful (though I could apply more adjectives than would fit in this space). The likes of Bela Legosi and Passion of Lovers has been left behind here, though their punk asthetics are still present in earnest except that here, they are applied in strategic highlights rather than in a clumsy wash. Of the other Bauhaus albmus, I only bother with a few songs from each but from Burning...I relish every song.

the last album bauhaus ever recorded. i really want to like alot of it. however at times its difficult, some of it is just way to melodramatic to the point of being irritating. i love bauhaus and i like this album but it just seems like they were struggling to be goth now, whereas on the first two genres they sort of created the genre by just being themselves. alot of the punky influences are gone and the playing is alot more slick so if youre into dark meloncholy melodrama then i would recommend this but if youre looking for more aggressive, up tempo bauhaus tracks then i would recommend buying Mask, the bands first album. over all i liked the songs "honeymoon croon" and "she's in parties". but i only listened to this album about three times through. i guess it really wasnt my thing. sorry bauhaus, sorry daniel ash, sorry pete.

This is their best and darkest album. The title track is brilliant, along with 'She's in Parties'. That said, the entire album is gloomy and wonderful. I've heard it said that this is Bauhaus' most commercial album. I don't think so. If anything, it's them at their most uncommercial and 'Goth', if you will. As good as 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' was, the songs on this album are far superior. Unfortunately, this album is woefully overlooked because of the splintering of the group and the supposed inconsistency of styles. I disagree. This is a classic-right up there with The Cure's 'Pornography', the Banhees' 'Juju', and Joy Division's 'Closer'.

I can`t fathom what was going thru the band`s minds while recording this or in the process of making this. I`m sure there was tension, drugs and yada yada. Pure speculation. I do know that individual talents really came out. Daniel Ash to be the most significant. Perhaps it was planned that way?
All predjudice and expectations aside, I thought is was an unintential masterpiece. The lyrics were fantastic and thought provoking. The music was great. Vocals different than what we were used to but also good. I don`t see the fuss.
She`s In Parties dragged on longer than it should have but may have been the best song.

This is, bar none, the most impressive live album I have ever heard to date. In fact, while Planet X's studio albums are fine and all, this destroys them mercilessly. Actually, this walks all over any progressive metal/fusion album that I can think of off the top of my head - studio or live. A bold declaration? Yeah, maybe.

The guys are no strangers in the music world. Derek Sherinian is probably best known for his brief time with Dream Theater, Tony MacAlpine is the whitest black guitar player in existence who has played everything from fusion-jazz with Cab to neoclassical metal with Vitalij Kuprij, Virgil Donati has artists from all around the world willing to pay him obscene amounts of money just to play session drums for them, and temporary live bassist Dave LaRue has been employed by the likes of John Petrucci and Steve Morse. Naturally, this might mean ego, and ego might mean a supergroup doomed to fail. However, Planet X do not fail. If I didn't know better, I'd say that there was an invisible bio-cable on stage connecting all four of them and transferring brain matter back and forth in order to create a giant synergy dome, bringing out the absolute best in all four players and channeling it into a central pool of instrumental perfection from which the players may pull at will. Hmm.

Meanwhile, back in reality...

Live From Oz features seven tracks from Universe, one track from Moonbabies, three solo spots, and the Atlantis trilogy from Derek Sherinian's Planet X album (which I have not heard, so I'm not sure what these three tracks sound like in the studio). I can't speak for Atlantis, but otherwise each song is performed more or less faithfully to the original - that is, all the metal-fusion shredding, alien drumming, and "damn I wish I was a guitar player!"-keyboarding is nailed to perfection and comes through crystal clear, and the transitions inbetween are smooth and natural. Tony manages to take Steve Vai's squealing, Yngwie Malmsteen's neoclassical wankery, and Allan Holdsworth's legato mastery and twist them all into something oddly compelling. It isn't all shred, though... there are plenty of slow, soaring, and beautiful solos and leads that feel like they would be more at home on a Weather Report record. Derek actually does a lot of atmospheric support work throughout the set as opposed to simply trying to stroke his ego by competing with Tony all the time, which is good, because I've always been of the mind that Derek is better when he focuses on ambience than when he's pretending to be a second lead guitar. Not to worry, though, Tony and Derek still have enough crazy unisons and duels to keep the die-hard proghead drooling. Virgil is pure insanity, as usual... I don't think there's a single straightforward groove to be found anywhere in the 70+ minutes of this show that lasts for more than a few seconds. He sits back there, doing absurd stuff like rolls that use both ends of his sticks (the heads doing the snare, and the butts doing the toms, or vice-versa), playing with each of his four limbs in different meters, employing syncopation techniques from hell, performing one-footed double-bass runs that are faster than or as fast as most players can do with two feet, doing one-handed treks across his obscene kit at lightning speeds while keeping a steady hi-hat rhythm with his other hand, and other things that would make us mere mortals gape in awe.

Song-wise, the Atlantis trilogy is what really took my breath away here. "Apocalypse 1470 BC" starts off in typical Planet X fashion - Tony wailing away, Derek providing futuristic soundscapes, and Virgil working on a brain aneurism. However, that ends abruptly about one minute in as Virgil apparently grows another pair of arms and, while maintaining a straightforward hi-hat/snare backbeat, embarks on a speedy cross-kit hike (with Tony and Derek along for the ride) that can only be described as sounding like somebody had just hit the fast-forward button right in the middle of a dense instrumental jam. Jaw, meet floor. This general idea of multiple rhythms being played simultaneously at multiple speeds is repeated in several variations until the song comes to an end. A smooth bass solo from Dave LaRue marks the start of "Sea of Antiquity", backed by Derek's piano. Tony takes over about a minute in with a solo of his own that runs the gamut from soaring, emotional vibrato work to wild shredding and sweeping... and he takes the song to its end. "Lost Island" indulges in some upbeat, dreamy melodies from the getgo that really do make you feel like you're peacefully relaxing on some lost island in the middle of nowhere. A third of the way in, the guys briefly lapse into the craziness that we heard on "Apocalypse 1470 BC", with Virgil keeping a slow beat on the hi-hat while going into fast-forward mode on the remainder of his kit to meet up with Tony and Derek. From there, ideas clash from all directions until everything climaxes into a sprawling, expansive, epic-sounding closing sequence that isn't unlike the end of Dream Theater's "Hell's Kitchen". Very beautiful.

The solo spots are mostly typical. Especially Virgil's and Tony's... except for the thing where Virgil's is sandwhiched right in the middle of "Warfinger", which I suppose works out well. Derek's solo, or at least the second half of it, sort of reminds me of the background music to Master of Orion 2, only drenched in a futuristic synth sound (probably not the best point of reference, as the game isn't exactly popular, but oh well). That's a good thing, in case you were wondering.

I can't really think of anything negative to say, so I'll just say that this is absolutely mandatory for any fan of progressive metal and/or metal-fusion. Even those people who are allergic to bands like Dream Theater, Andromeda, and Dreamscape should check this out, because it's on a completely different level.

one reviewer wondered why this band isn't more popular, well, maybe because the record labels that have these bands do very little if anything to promote them. Maybe they figure the average joe on the street won't 'get' this type of music, which is quite possible. I see very little if any promotion for fusion type bands which is damn shame considering a lot of them have some incredible musicians in them, like this band. These are cream-of-the-crop musicians here and the playing on this disc is fantastic.
I guess the suits at the labels figure that the built-in fans for this type of music will buy the CDs and maybe that's enough for them, who knows. Too many mediocre bands out there who can barely tune their instruments get overhyped while bands like this get overlooked except for the hardcore fans.
If you like progressive fusionesque music by some great musicians then get this disc. The fact that you're on this page is a good start, so I'll do what the record labels won't or aren't doing, and that's telling you to GET THIS CD!!!

"Awesome", "explosive", "amazing' are superlatives that come to mind when first hearing this intense, live hard rock instrumental music. Why Planet X's as a group is not more popular is bewildering. Anyone who likes rock instrumentals from the likes of Vai, Satriani or G3 extravaganzas should pick this up immediately.

In many ways this album is of a supergroup - everyone of these musicians are at the top of their craft, seasoned and admired and (employed!) by other musicians who know how brilliant they are! Clearly Vai knew who he needed to back his DVD 'Live at the Astoria' as both Tony MacAlpine and Virgil Donati were his number 1 support musicians.

John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Mike Portnoy and now Derek Sherinian all knew who would best fill the bass role for their respective solo efforts, so although not part of the Planet X band as such, Dave Larue is the special guest bassist for this tour and his note for note runs that follow Tony and Derek are more complicated than your average rock lead guitarist can play!

Okay - so the word "complicated" is used. Yes, this music is complicated and intense. You won't be humming it as you go for an Sunday afternoon stroll. But that's what's so compelling about listening to this album - it's an andrenalin rush of power rock fusion. Admittedly the compositions sound quite dark and live in the world of minor keys but the powerful interplay and angular time signatures that chop and change keep you riveted.

Another reviewer said that the poor drummer had to count throughout this album and couldn't just groove in a straight 4/4 . From what I've heard Virgil thrives on odd time signatures - it seems to come naturally and his bass double pedal seems to be in sprint mode rather than marathon groove. From an interview I've read, the mighty Simon Phillips, who mixed this album and who is still one of the world's greatest drummers, said he was blown away by Virgil's playing and sometimes couldn't even contemplate playing what Virgil did effortlessly. Sometimes I listen to this album and think that Virgil is what stops this from being an overblown, bombastic shredfest. The drumming is marvelous and gives the ordinary compositions edge.

I've listened to Tony since his first solo album and his "Maximum Security" album is still listed by many as a guitar landmark album. "Live in Oz" shows all Tony's chops but especially his Holdworthian whammy bar nudges and legato playing. This is what gives this album a more fusion feel than straight-out rock instrumental. I far prefer Tony's guitaring here to what I've heard on the CAB album; here some of the solos are quite organic and have space and in places beautiful rather than speedy. Don't worry there is sufficient shred as well on this to make most other so called great guitarists hop for cover!

Derek is remarkably supportive on this live outing - yes, he has the chance to exchange blistering lead lines with Tony on "Pods of Chance" that sound more like duelling guitars than keyboards - but overall I was relieved to note that the main solo instrument was Tony's guitar. Yes, Derek plays all the time but filling the canvas with waves of sound over which Tony wails rather than trying to outdo the guitar with keyboard antics.

Perhaps the one word that captures this album is "exciting". It's no musical masterpiece but rather a showcase of skills that make one laugh at their audacity! The rest of us mere mortals on planet earth can merely applaud!

If you like progressive rock, or fusion, or even if you dont...

In a nutshell, if you like talented musicians, this is the cd you've been looking for. Never, and I mean NEVER before have I ever heard a more technically/musically advanced musicians IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Tony MacAlpine is hands down the most technically advanced guitarist on this planet. Nobody can match up to him, and nobody ever will. Ever. No one. John Petrucci? Forget it. Allan Holdsworth? Nice try.

Nobody.

I mean Virgil Donati is also very advanced. But Tony MacAlpine....he actually scares me now. This album brings out the best of Tony and Virgil AND Sherinian. Its one of the best live albums I own, although it can get a little overwhelming at times.
If you choose to buy this CD, please understand first that Planet X is not intended for humans to listen to. It is so musically advanced that it may seem like music that you would hear in a club on Mars.

Once you get past that, however, you will never be more amazed (or should i say Frightened) by Tony MacAlpine. He literally scares me now.

as a guitar player I have always[since I was 13]liked joe satriani and other instrumental artists. after reading some reviews I purchased this album I was amazed at what I heard. I stayed up until about 12:00 at night trying to figure out "inside
black" on guitar. I recomend this album to anyone who has a taste for fusion and instrumental types of music. Live at the Oz is the best live album I own. if there was no cheering in the backround you would think this was a studio album

do yourself a favor and buy this cd every track is flawless and stands out from one another.

More comedy monologue than musical performance, Bea Arthur's one-woman show Bea Arthur on Broadway: Just Between Friends collects memories from the silver-haired star's life on Broadway (Fiddler on the Roof, Mame, The Threepenny Opera) and television (Maude, The Golden Girls).

"I wanted to see if I had the guts to just come and be myself," Arthur says in this performance recorded in front of a live audience in December 2001. Alongside co-creator and pianist Billy Goldenberg, she offers wry and often funny anecdotes about her career and the people she's worked with (Angela Lansbury, Pia Zadora). When she does sing ... well, even decades ago Arthur didn't have a beautiful voice, but she's well-suited to the comedy songs. And her versions of Kurt Weill's "Pirate Jenny" and Goldenberg's own "Fifty Percent"--while they won't make anyone forget Lotte Lenya or Dorothy Loudon--are effective in their own right. Thank goodness this is available on CD. I saw the show twice in Manhattan and once in P-town MA. She is an American treasure. What's nice is that you don't need to have had seen the live performance to enjoy this CD. (Though I'd love to have it on DVD.) Just Bea, Billy, a piano and yet so much more!!!!!

For anyone who has ever laughed as Bea Arthur deftly put people in their place with her lightning quick wit as Dorothy on the "Golden Girls", they will not be disappointed with this CD. Arthur, some 9 years after leaving the small screen, returns triumphantly to her professional roots, the stage, and does not disappoint. Mixing antedotal stories with classic songs, all to the accompianment of Billy Goldenburg, Arthur weaves her life in a brillant 90 minute tapestry so that the listener regrets ever reaching the end. Anyone who has ever seen Arthur perform on stage, or as Maude or Dorothy, they will not regret purchasing this CD. For that rare minority of people who have not have the privilage of seeing Arthur previously should find out what they have been missing of this American icon.

Bea Arthur. Nearing 80. And yet, her continuing vitality is blatantly obvious in this live recording. I will tell you this--I bought this disc with no expectations whatsoever. I like Golden Girls as much as the next chap, and I was slightly curious about what Bea had become.

The simple truth was that I was stunned. Completely stunned. Again, this sounds as the same, alive, malicious woman who portrayed those "affirmative women" on TV (per her own words). She mocks her own voice, recalling the humiliation of being mistaken for the man of the house through the phone ... and some--who buy this disk with the intent of getting a faultless musical performance--might agree (and according to some reviews her, HAVE agreed) that her voice is perhaps too deep, too cutting, not pure enough. But this is NOT (and I stress it) a musical performance per se, it is not a perfectly rounded voice singing perfect standards.

What this disc is? A drama performance. The songs are intermissed with speech interludes, during which Bea narrates anecdotes from her past experience as an actress--and that's is PRECISELY what is MAGIC. You feel as though she's inviting you to witness the high points of her life, and it's a very nice place. The songs, seem alive as rarely before, because they are performed. She renders them with life, and make the most of her abilities.

I really appreciated some of the smaller things. You get to recognize her trademark, slightly embarassed, `You know' ... She'll make you laugh with good natured reminiscence ("A Mother's Ingenuity"!); some of the songs are delightfully imperfect, (I learned to love the half-sung/half-spoken "What Do You Start" ...), some others are wonderfully dynamic ("What Can You Get a Nudist For Her Birthday?", "Threepenny Opera/Pirate Jenny" ...), but all are very enjoyable ...

Be it "Isn't He Adorable?" or "If I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' on It" ... every track on this disc will have you fondly reminisce or curiously discover the career of one helluva woman.

You really can't be disappointed. I promise.

Bea Arthur, one of the finest performers of her time.
Bea is most known for her role on the sitcoms Golden Girls and Maude, but she's done so much theater work as well.
She was in the cast of the original U.S production of "Threepenny Opera" starring Lotta Lenya, and in the original cast of "Fiddler On The Roof" and "Mame". But Bea started her theater career in a show called "The Shoestring Revue".
Bea stoled the scene every night when she performed as yente the Matcmaker on "Fiddler On The Roof" and she also got a hole lot of response as Vera Charles on "Mame", starring Angela Lansbury. In this live performence Bea performs a collection of songs chosen by herself, such as, "Let's Face The Music And Dance", "Isn't He Adorable", "Fifty Percent" and her theme song from Mame "The Man In The Moon". Bea is absolutely one of our time finest performers, with her witty sence of knowledge and her indefiable voice she has establised herself as a broadway legend, alongside Judy Garland, Elaine Stritch, Mary Martin. She is one of the last broadway female legends alive. And still going strong, Bea is rounding 80, but you wouldn't notice.
Do yourself a favour and take a trip down down memory lane, it's your chance to hang out with the last female broadway legend around.

As a huge fan of Bea Arthur's, I was very excited when I heard she would return to Broadway to do a one-woman show. Not since winning the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for "Mame" has Bea Arthur been on stage. Well, what a way to follow up! This cd (which was recorded during a live performance) Bea gives fans an intimate look into her show business life. The stories are very funny and touching, and the songs (which Bea picked out herself) are fun, beautiful, and magical. A favorite part of this cd for me, is when Bea talks about her days on TV. She was the star of two very successful and groundbreaking sitcoms, "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" I am a huge fan of "The Golden Girls" and Bea's character Dorothy was always my favorite. This cd is a must for any Bea Arthur fan, but the appeal of this amazing show goes beyond her hardcore fans. Any fan of classic Broadway and cabaret songs will love this cd. This is one of the favorite cds I own, and should be treasured by more people. And finally, as a sidenote, Bea's one-woman show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2001 in the category of Best Special Theatrical Event.

Well, Disney has done this again... How can this thing earn money?
Only "Kiss the Girl" "Reflection" and "Once Upon a Dream" are favorites. It was so strange that "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" which was from "The Lion King" was in this album. This was not from a Disney Princess Movie! And why the song from "Aladdin & the King of Thieves" can be recorded in a Disney Princess album?
I love Disney Princess very much, and I love listening to the wonderful and sweet voices of the Princesses, for example, Ariel, Belle and Pocahontas, even Mulan. Well, where are the songs of the Princesses? And I don't like the songs from "Cinderella-2: Dreams Come True", I think they wouldn't be so terrible if there were no classic Princess songs as reference substance!
This album is really unworthy. It was neither fit for adults nor children, even a Disney fan won't love this. This album might make Disney fans and your kid disappointed, even angry. We want to listen to REAL Disney Princess songs! What we want is not this confusing album. I hope that there won't be any Disney Favoties albums like this. It's really disappointing. I have to say this even though it's not nice: If you buy this, you might be taken in by this. Save your money to buy other better off Disney albums!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Reason to Get This CD.......2005-12-31

I'm going to say it right now --- this CD is good. It's very good. If you're looking for true "Disney princess" tracks and you don't consider Cinderella II, Aladdin and the King of Thieves or Mulan/Lion King to count, then stop now. But it seems like most people are basing their opinions on the sorts of songs they expected from the CD, rather than what's actually on it.

The CD begins with "I Won't Say (I'm in Love)" by Meg(ara) from Disney's "Hercules." This is one of my favorite Disney movies and this is an excellent track. Meg tries to deny her feelings for Hercules, before finally sort of admitting that she is in love.

Next is "Belle" from "Beauty and the Beast." A wonderful tune of dreams and romance that was nominated for an Academy Award.

Who doesn't enjoy "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" Featuring funny bits by Timon and Pumbaa, excellent harmonies and singing by both Simba and Nala.

"If I Can't Love Her" is from the stage show of "Beauty and the Beast." It's my least favorite track on the CD, but it's still fairly decent and interesting to hear for those who haven't seen this stage show.

"Reflection" is from "Mulan" and I consider it to be possibly be the best track from that movie. Is Mulan is a Disney princess? Well, you can debate that all you want --- I suppose at this point, she's royalty, so I guess she counts.

"Out of Thin Air" is my favorite song "Aladdin and the King of Thieves." Aladdin and Jasmine sing about what it would be like for Aladdin to finally find his father. Jasmine tells Aladdin that he doesn't just come out of thin air. The music on this recalls "A Whole New World" for me.

"Kiss the Girl" is from "The Little Mermaid." It's not my favorite song from that movie --- I would have preferred "Part of Your World." But it'll do all right. And it can't be said that Ariel isn't a Disney princess --- after all, she does marry Prince Eric.

"Once Upon a Dream" is a classic! It's from "Sleeping Beauty." Sure, the little kiddies today may not entirely appreciate this, but I think it's wonderful that they would include a classic like this.


Now, part of the reason for this CD's release was to have a place for the music from the Disney "Cindrella" sequel "Cindrella II." Yes, this is a direct-to-DVD release, but it's a good one. This CD is the only place to find these excellent songs, all performed by Brooke Allison. They also all (except the last one) follow a theme of "being yourself:"

"Follow Your Heart" is about a time when Cinderella was assigned to the preparations for the royal ball. She was given all sorts of instructions, such as not opening the curtains and not inviting commoners in. Finally, she decided to just do things her own way. A lively, upbeat, positive theme.

"The World Is Looking Up To" is about the mouse Jaq and when he decides to become human. Another fun track about being yourself.

"It's What's Inside That Counts" comes from when Cinderella's stepsister Anastasia fell in love. She thought she'd get all dolled up, but learned that she can be loved just for being her.

Finally, "Put It Together" is a wonderfully fun techno remix of the classic "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo." I was surprised this works, but it does, splendidly.

So if you're looking for a Disney CD with great music and are willing to look past any preconceived ideas, then snap this CD up.

When is Disney ever going to realize that recycling Disney Princess songs aren't such a good idea? As a Disney Princess fan since I was really little I have always enjoyed Disney princess songs. But i am so so so so sick and tired about on just about every Disney album dedicated solely to the Disney Princesses Disney always always ALWAYS has a habit of recycling old princess songs instead of adding new princess songs. I mean people already own half the songs on Princess Favorites and can buy them on the film soundtracks or the Disney princess collection cd. Why I think this cd was released is that Disney was trying to promote the movie Cinderella II Dreams Come True as the songs from that movie are on this cd. But heck one of the songs Put it Together is also on the SUPERSTAR HITS cd. So while this cd may be a redone version of Princess Collection Volume #2 please Please Please PLEASE do not buy,

I would classify only 3 of the songs on this CD as Princess Favorites - Belle, Kiss The Girl and Once Upon A Dream. The rest are either not Princess songs or not favorites.

My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop. She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses.

We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid. I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video?

I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off. Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!

A friend gave this CD to my little girl for her 5th birthday...she was thrilled to get it. The thrill ended as soon as it was played. She wanted to know where the Princesses were.
There is no Ariel...just a song by Sebastian. No Cinderella, no Snow White, and why would they place an unknown song from the Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast which only has been heard by the people attending the musical?? At least Sleeping Beauty made the grade. My daughter has the movie Cinderella II which the CD promotes, but is not familiar with them to really enjoy these 4 songs.
Again, save your money...some day maybe Disney will set aside some of their money and marketing hunger and put out a CD that any 5 year old princess will enjoy singing along with...BTW isn't Beauty and the Beast being re-released...oh yea, thats why that endless song about Belle is on there..Bon Jour!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Way to go Michael, you've done it again!

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

"From The Inside," is, to me, a weak album. I'll go through it song-by-song:

"Hoe Down" is much too slow to be a good 'hoe down' song. It is not anywhere near as interesting musically or lyrically as their other hoe down songs that came afterward, beginning with "Blue Water/Fool's Gold" from "Crazy Eyes" and ending with "Ashes/Feudin'" on Cowboys & Englishmen."

"Bad Weather" IS a great song, but I never liked the odd quality that Paul Cotton had in his voice at this point in his career. I always thought he sounded like an old man on it, and so have called it his "old man" voice. I also think it goes on a bit too long. It should be noted that Cotton has been quoted as saying that the version of this song he thought was best is the one on "Live." I agree.

"What Am I Gonna Do?" is nicely sung, but I don't think it's any great shakes as a song. I don't dislike it, though.

"You Are The One" is also a moderately pleasant, forgettable song, but, again, no great shakes to my ear.

"Railroad Days" is a pretty good mid-tempo rocker, but it, too, suffers from Cotton's "old man" voice. I do like the song, though.

"From The Inside" is Timothy B. Schmit (now of the Eagles) finding his voice, both as a writer and a singer, but to my ear he is not yet there. Schmit has always been the weakest lyricist in the band (when he was in it) as far as I'm concerned, and I have never really figured out what the heck he meant when he sings that he's "talkin' it over from the inside." From the inside of what? Himself? I suppose that's probably what he means, but it just doesn't have any clarity for me and therefore leaves me cold. Also, I don't think melody is that great. I remember being surprised to see it included on "The Forgotten Trail" when it came out in 1990. "That's song's not that good," I thought. "Why did they put THAT on there?"

"Do You Feel It, Too?" is a song I never really cared for. It always sounded like a song that the band never really quite figured out what they wanted to do with. When the alternate version of the song was released on the Pickin' Up The Pieces" CD (which I am now convinced came from the sessions for "Poco", this feeling was confirmed. I finally heard a melody in the song that had escaped me when I had nothing with which to compare the "From The Inside" version. I think the alternate version is superior to this one, and they should have used it.

"Ol' Forgiver" is Cotton's "old man" voice at its worst. I don't know about it being the WORST Poco song, as some have stated, but it's definitely a contender in my book.

"What If I Should Say I Love You?" - see "What Am I Gonna Do?" I feel the same way about this song.

"Just For Me And You" is the only song I really think works on this album, and the only one I really enjoy listening to from it.

If you like this album, more power to you - what a boring world if we all had the same taste, but it does little for me. When I first bought it on vinyl, I really hated it, but have come to see some small virtues (mentioned above) and do listen to it occasionally. I had the same experience with "Legacy" when I bought it, and with "Head Over Heels" too, for that matter, though I find much more to appreciate about HOH these days than I ever did in the past. If you're looking for one of Poco's better Epic albums, definitely PASS on this one.

With the departure of Jim Messina, Poco lost a co-founder, their lead guitar player and their producer. "From the Inside" featured the arrival of Messina's replacement, the great Paul Cotton. Cotton settled right in on this record. The same can't be said for the producer. Blues legend Steve Cropper produced this record and totally missed the mark. Cropper's production does not due justice to some great material by Richie Furay, Cotton and Tim Schmit.

Despite this, "From the Inside" is a great record, largely due to the strong material and great musicianship. Cotton's "Bad Weather" and "Railroad Days" are top notch and Furay's "Just for Me and You", "What if I Should Say I Love You" and "You Are the One" are nothing short of fantastic.

If there is a downside to this record it is that it is a little short on rockers. Much like the Byrds' "Ballad of Easy Rider" album, this is a laid back release that shows that the band could produce mellower material and still sound great.

The great Messina was gone, replaced by Paul Cotton. Most of us fans were prepared for a real letdown but were pleasantly surprised when the group delivered this tasty collection of songs. "Hoe Down" got my attention right away, announcing that the upbeat attitude wasn't dead yet. Then the gracious "Bad Weather" put me at ease over the change in lead guitarists. One after another the tunes played out, reassuring me that Poco was alive and well. It doesn't quite match the astonishing studio LP that preceded it but very few albums do. This has few "filler" songs and holds up quite well over the years.

This is the fourth offering from Poco...well if you don't want to include the live album that came before this one you don't have to. This is without a doubt thier best album. It's practically a masterpiece musically. The arrangements straddle country and pop very well without losing the rock and roll feel. If there had to be a flaw it would be the uneven songwriting that made me feel that they were trying to stay in the lines as far as keeping the songs short. The longest song on here clocks in a 5 minutes and 32 seconds. "Hoedown" is the only song that needs to be short. The rest needed a little filler to make the songs whole in my opinion. There's still a chockful of good songs here though. "Bad Weather" Feautures Paul Cotton's debut as a songwriter, and a singer. "You Are The One" a nice bouncy country love song, the title cut is the best by far with tremendous harmonizing from Tim Schmidt, and The last song on the album "Just For Me And You" equals the title cut as the best song on this album a tasty little rocker to give you something to hum on the way home. This was a busy album where Jim Messina would leave after "Deliverin", and Paul Cotton enters, but Ritchie Fuary would now start to get cold feet about continuing on, but he hangs on for 2 more albums, and leaves after recording "Crazy Eyes". This was almost a masterpiece, and I enjoyed it when I first heard the promo 26 years ago, and things just never die.

Jim Messina gone, Paul Cotton arrives. A different vibe from their first 3 records.

I forgot about "Hoedown". What a cool way to open the record. It reaches back to their first album without wanting to relive past memories. A good way to get you sucked in to the record.

Then there's "Railroad Days". I remember watching "Saturday Night Live" in the mid-1990's when the band starting playing this song going into commercial. I nearly fainted when I heard it. "Railroad Days" and "Hurry Up" from their second album are the two best songs Poco ever recorded. It's a darn shame "Railroad Days" did not make "The Forgotten Trail" 2-CD collection. Play this song LOUD.

The rest of the album shows a definite transition into a more rock direction with twinges of country. This record paves the way to their different attack of the mid to late 1970's.

This film adaptation of the popular video game series attempts a technological breakthrough: computer-generated, photo-realistic renditions of human characters. But while critics and audiences gave mixed marks to game creator and film producer-director Hironobu Sakaguchi's ambitious technical efforts, it was ironically the film's most obviously human elements--its veteran actors' voice performances and, crucially, the masterful score by Elliot Goldenthal--that really brought it to life. Goldenthal's work is a sweeping orchestral masterpiece that covers vast musical territory, from the action-adventure of Korngold to the fantasy strains of Herrmann, florid Russian romanticism to touches of late-20th-century modernism. With the London Symphony in full voice and then some, Goldenthal's music is treated to a performance of rare dynamic range and dramatic power; the edgy, modern brass flourishes and thunderous percussion of "Toccata and Dreamscapes" alone may have listeners groping for their seatbelts. -I'm not big on RPG's so I don't know much about the "Final Fantasy" games, but I do hear that the scores are largely excellent so I was a bit surprised when the game composer wasn't used and the great Elliot Goldenthal was brought in instead. Unlike the movie which is a beautiful disappointment, the score is fantastic and definitely one of the best from this very underrated composer that does not get the respect he deserves.

-The best piece of music on the album and one of the best musical cues I've heard in my life is "Race to Old New York" which starts off with this fast moving strings that plays this simple melody, then shortly after the brass comes in and picks up the melody which keeps going to the short cue comes to it's natural resolution. I don't seem to remember hearing that cue in the movie which was a shame because it's so wonderful.

-Other tracks that should make glad that you have ears are "The Phantom Plains", "Dead Rain", "Code Red", "Music for Dialogues", "Winged Serpent", "Zeus Cannon", and "Adagio and Transfiguration". I love how he blends the techno stuff with the orchestral elements in "Dead Rain" and "Winged Serpent" is just creepy as hell. "Zeus Cannon" is a majestic piece that sounds like the music that should accompany a Greek god. "Music for Dialogues" is a great piece that should be familiar territory for all Goldenthal fans.

-There is an isolated track on the DVD which is great, but Goldenthal seems to have the same problem that great composer Marco Beltrami has, which is to talk over the music. Most of the cues he does talk over are on the album so it's not that big of a problem, although I do wish he would have actually talked for the scenes when there was no music. 10 minutes would pass by and we won't hear a peep from him, but he is a brilliant composer so I guess we can forgive his lack of great DVD commentaries.

-Even if you find the movie to be a little disappointing, the score should keep you interested. It's fresh, it's great and gives birth to "Race to Old New York" which should be included in any filmmusic geek's top 50 of great musical cues of all time

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece........2006-11-28

I cannot express how finely crafted this score is. Goldenthal is one of my favorite composers (not just for film) and this is definitely one of his highlights. I believe that where this score really shines is Elliot's way of making really simple musical ideas sound extremely intense and grand. For example, Race to Old New York, one of my favorite cues, has an extremely powerful opening that is nothing but a string ensemble racing up and down a g minor chord. Yet it instantly exposes many raw emotions that other composers would need a few movements of a symphony to convey. Most of Goldenthal's trademarks can be found in this score. Horn tone clusters, near-atonal trills on brass, and HUGE, no, EPIC orchestrations that we fell in love with in Titus. The glass harmonica (and the way Elliot employs it) found its way into this film from the score for Interview with the Vampire. I could go on, but I won't. This is a remarkable CD by one of the best living composers (now that Ligeti is no longer with us).

This has to be Goldenthal's best score to date! It's an orchestral masterpiece performed by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra.

Let me explain a few awesome tracks before giving the downside to this release.

The album opens with ambient noise and dark choir, much like Horner's Aliens. The second track, "Race to Old New York", doesn't appear on the film, or as this cue version does on the album. It's played by racing strings and low brass. Very good track and one of my favorites.

"The Kiss" proves to Hollywood and Goldenthal skeptics that he is able to pull of romantic, soothing themes. "The Kiss" is a romantic theme played by piano with some strings.

"Toccata and Dreamscapes" is the longest and most difficult track to perform. Goldenthal employs 40 French horns (!) to blast, grunt and shrill away every once in a while during the percussion and interrupted string action. One of the best tracks!

"Adagio and Transfiguration" closes the score album with a sad, sweeping reprise of the romantic theme and finishes on a solo trumpet.

Between all of these reviewed tracks are mixtures of sweeping cues, rolling strings, tense moments and dark choir. All this makes for a very diverse range of music on about 50 minutes of score for this release.

The album ends with two songs. Lara Fabian's rendition of the love theme in pop form is nice but is ruined by the last song on the album not worth mentioning. The rock song ruins the entire listening experience.

The Complaints:
One I've already mentioned: the stupid rock song at the end of the CD; two, the music is not in chronological order, but I guess it makes for a better listening experience; and three, much good music is missing! "Dead Rain" is almost 8 minutes long on the film and we only get about 2 minutes on the album cut. The good thing about the special edition DVD is that we get the option of an isolated track and commentary by Elliot Goldenthal. Goldenthal is smart leaving the music cues that didn't appear on the album uncommented.

Get this soundtrack and the special edition DVD. They're worth every penny!

If you've seen Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within DVD, you've probably listened to the isolated score with commentary by Elliot Goldenthal, during which you will notice that he talks over certain bits of score but leaves other chunks of score alone, un-interrupted.

It more or less translates to this: The sections of score he talks over seem to all be here on the soundtrack and well covered. The several chunks of score he doesn't talk over some over eight minutes in length: completely axed and not used for this soundtrack.

"Dead Rain" is missing about seven minutes of great scoring which blend into it seemlessly in the film. Why do those responsible for cutting the score for a film's soundtrack axe some of the better parts (in my mind) in exchange for one or two tracks that don't seem to tell as much of a story? I've experienced this with so many scores I've bought. Exceptional pieces used in films getting axed.. and for what? The expense of a second disc? I'd gladly pay for a second disc or for a third folks. I really would, especially with scores like this.

Which is why I'm giving this soundtrack 3 stars. Not because the music sucks, it's great and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just remember to own the film on DVD as well as this soundtrack so you can get a little extra from Elliot.

Elliot Goldenthal wrote a grand, majestic score for the computer-animated science-fiction spectacle "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within." The music bursts with roaring brass under climactic string arpeggios, carrying the listener high on a violent tidal wave, when suddenly the wave is broken and settles down with a soft female voice humming over an elusive and beautiful melody played on the piano. There's a sparse use of the synthesizer, apart from some choir effects in the background and echoing ambient sounds. The accent is very much on music played by a big orchestra.
This film doubtlessly features one of Goldenthal's best film scores. It's rich and inspired in every scene and every take. It keeps your attention, down to the last minute on the album. The music for the dream sequences is the most complex and grand, with a complex combination of percussion, string arpeggios and brass - often culminating like a thunderstorm, but always leaving a calm resuscitation behind. Buy this if you like modern, complex, grand music and lush sweeping "dreamscape" music.

This one gets 4 stars.

I love the Angels of Venice, but this is not one of my favorite recordings by them. The music on this CD feels a little uneven; the lyrical beauty of pieces such as "China Moon" seem almost too melodic compared to more vocally twisting pieces like the rather eerie lullaby, "Nana." But eerie is very much the feeling that Carol Tatum seems to be focusing on: the sharp steely vocals on "Nana" seem to be the rule rather than the exception -- "Three Nightingales," and "Awake Inside a Dream" carry hallmark haunting voice and speech renditions.

"China Moon," "Lionheart," and "Chanter Mer" (also a vocal piece) are definitely the shining gems on this CD. The other pieces are all rather similar sounding, but still interesting, and worth a listen.

"Exotic" and "Poetic" are actually the two sections into which this CD is divided, and the wonderful arrangements therein for harp, flute and cello are just that. The "exotic" numbers are exciting and mysterious, while the poetic selections are simply lovely. The rich sound of these three instruments is wonderfully suited to such divergent styles, lending beauty and grace to all. Featured on this album are the original Angels: Carol Tatum on harp, Suzanne Teng on flute, and Peggy Baldwin on cello, with a host of guest artists rounding out the sound, including Greg Ellis on percussion and Azam Ali on vocals. Two of the "exotic" numbers and one from the "poetic" section were re-recorded for the group's Windam Hill debut, but the rest of the material is unique to this release. The duplicate pieces are some of the Angels' best, though, so they're certainly worth hearing again! The Angels first, mellower release is called "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello". Flutist Suzanne Teng went on to release a CD of her own, "Mystic Journey", and Carol Tatum recently put out her own album, "Music for Harp". All are dreamy, lyrical and nothing short of intoxicating. Those who enjoy the Angels' innovative work might also appreciate that of Nana Simopolous in her releases "Daughters of the Sun" and "After the Moon".

Carol has performed in our area several times. I acquired three of her CD's and I just love them. You need to be in certain pensive mood to fully appreciate this wonderful music. Otherwise, just listen to pop, rock or country. Her music is magical, simple yet profound, relaxing yet compelling and inspiring. I would highly recommend any of her albums. Her latest - just her on harp with her keyboards added later - is delightful.

With all due respect to the previous reviewer, the music on "Awake..." isn't anywhere CLOSE to "new age" music- not even a distant eighth cousin. I'm not sure what was meant by the "sound" effects being "shonky" but, to MY ears, the effects subtly enhance the many varying moods of the music on this recording. Head Angel Carol Tatum (who also happens to be one of the best arrangers around) keeps the music from "wilting" VERY effectively- it's more of a slow, sweet simmer. The harp, flute, and cello staple of the Angel's sound is enhanced, but not overwhelmed, by percussion, voice, and spare sounding synths. It's a musically brave excursion, one that reveals it's wonders with repeated listens.
