Loving You is Easy.......2007-06-19
yes, yes it is. I had put this album off til last to complete my Charlies collection. I have no idea why. This along with Wonderland and Simpatico are my favorites. Amazing amazing amazing
A Fantastic Album and a Return to Form!.......2006-10-19
Up at the Lake, released in 2003, is the Charlatans' follow-up to 2001 experimental and somewhat weak Wonderland album. Up at the Lake is different yet it retains all of the classic Charlatans elements. Let me explain.....
The overriding theme of this album seems to be love, in all its forms and all the feelings that go along with it: joy, loss, pain, happiness, and everything in between. It's a fabulous record, however. Gone are the dance-beats of Wonderland (except for the second track, Feel the Pressure) and we're back to the sounds that made the Charlatans so excellent...great SINGING from Tim Burgess (here he uses the falsetto when appropriate, to much better effect that its constant use on Wonderland), great bass and drums, keyboards, and killer guitar licks and textures. And the songs....
The album starts with Up at the Lake, a rockin' little number. Feel the Pressure is probably my least favorite track on the disc...it sounds like it was left off of Wonderland and is pretty out of place here, although it's an enjoyable listen nontheless. As I Watch You in Disbelief reminds me of mid-1970s Bowie and is really exciting. Then we get to the meat of the album, which are the "love" songs, and they're all great! From the melancholy of Loving You Is Easy, I'll Sing a Hymn, Cry Yourself to Sleep, Try Again Today, and the somber album closer Dead Love, to the more upbeat rockers like Blue For You, High Up Your Tree, Bonafide Treasure, and Apples and Oranges, the album doesn't have a low point. Truly excellent and showing that the Charlatans are in no way slowing down at this point in their careers.
One note to make...you must get the UK edition of this album, which is the complete album. All other versions are missing the track I'll Sing a Hymn. Find it used or as an import, but that's the one to get.
FIVE STARS.......2006-07-04
Excellent album! Not what I was expecting but still excellent. This is part of the Charlatans Trilogy of solid albums, Some Friendly, Tellin Stories and Up at the Lake. But I do love all their music. I don't care for this album cover though. It doesn't fit the music, too dreary. Johnny Marr did an excellent job of compiling the tracks. FIVE STARS!
Buyer Beware.......2005-05-01
Before you purchase this CD, check amazon.co.uk. The British version has an extra track and costs about $7.00 less than this version (in spite of being air mailed from Europe). Trust me, the extra song and money saved are well worth it.
WOW...their best since "Tellin' Stories".......2004-12-10
Why hasn't this record been released in the US yet?? After 2 very disappointing records (Wonderland and Us & Us Only), the Charlatans have made their best record since 1997's Telling Stories. This is a fine return to the grooves and sways that we always knew they were capable of. I just bought this CD, but it has made it into the top 10 of the year. Great job, Charlatans. Thank you for giving your old fans a reason to still care. Not their best (that would be Up To Our Hips), but still a brilliant record!!

Customer Reviews:
A stunning debut album from progressive rock's power trio.......2004-11-07
In 1970 keyboard player Keith Emerson of Nice and Greg Lake of King Crimson bolted from their groups and joined with drummer Carl Palmer from Atomic Rooster to form the most successful power trio in the history of progressive rock. Only Renaissance could be said to have more explicitly incorporated classical music into its sound that Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The trio were regarded as technical virtuosos on their instruments, to such a point that their performances surely could not match their reputations. Lake might not be as great a guitarist as the other two were on their instruments, but when I was a lad if you had given me my choice of any one's voice in rock and roll, I would have wanted to sing like Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer also have some of the more interesting "what ifs" around in terms of their origin, since there were rumors of Jimi Hendrix joining the group and Steve Howe of Yes actually auditioned).
The self-tilted 1971 debut album (mostly recorded the previous year), made it to #18 on the Billboard album chart and is a mix of the bombastic synthesizer overkill that could dominate some of their early work (such as the first side of their next album, "Tarkus") and the subtle balance between Lake's vocals and Emerson's piano playing. The former is represented by the instrumental opening track, "The Barbarian," which sets up a radical shift to the former with "Take a Pebble." This song was ELP's first released single, and would become one of the improvisational standards of the group in concert. The "first side" ends with "Knife-Edge," based on a theme by Janacek I believe, and is one of the rare examples of balance between Emerson's synthesizer and Lake's vocals. You have to remember that the synthesizer was a new toy at that time and perhaps Emerson should be forgiven for taking it out so relentlessly at times on a test drive.
"The Three Fates," like "Take a Pebble," owes much to classical forms and provides ample evidence of my contention that Emerson was much more proficient on a piano than on an organ. "Tank" represents the third synthesized work while "Lucky Man," the group's first hit single, showcases Lake's haunting vocals against an acoustic guitar, with a synthesizer solo at the end (but the song only made it to #48 in 1971 and #51 in 1973; go figure). You cannot help but wonder what else Greg lake might have written if he did not have to contend with Emerson's propensity towards longer and longer keyboard works. On Emerson, Lake & Palmer's debut album we end up with three synthesizer songs and three piano/guitar songs and whichever type you prefer, it is going to dictate which of their other albums you are going to enjoy.

ELP the way it should be.......2007-05-02
You know. I love the japanese. They really know how to give you a good product. Mini LP cd replicas should be an american standard. High end digital re-mastering plus original gatefold cd paper sleeving, just like the original album pressing from the 70's, just shrunken to cd size, with lyrics and pictures and the cd looks like a little album..... makes me feel like I did when I first bought this on album in 1978. I loved it then and I love it now.
Go ahead and pay the extra cash...you know you want it!

Customer Reviews:
Really pretty bad...........2005-05-20
I have to agree that if you are not a rabid, insanely crazed fan of ELP ,then this is one of thee last things you should possibly consider buying.
The sound quality on both discs hardly ever elevates beyond the point of annoying...in that the sound is mostly so bad that some of the instruments are almost inaudible.Which ,for me, negates the usefullness of the versions of the tracks included.
One thing I can say is that it was certainly lucky for me that this was released ,because now I know that I definitely DO NOT want the 7 & 8 CD Bootleg Boxes offered that this stuff is compiled from.
I can use this as an example, though. The two Tangerine Dream Boxes of "bootleg" performances are of such a high quality compared to this drek that I am even more happy for their release. Sad,huh?
Wanna hear ELP live? Then get Welcome Back My Friends...(the 2CD set) or The Live release from the 1977 tour...now they are very enjoyable!
This is just too dismal in sound quality.
Is it really "The Best of The Bootlegs"??
Beaten by the real thing.......2002-12-12
As a fan of the band, of the songs chosen for this compilation, of live performances, and of rare recordings, I should be delighted with "Best of the Bootlegs." Except that the sound quality is awful . . . and I don't mean "audiophile" awful. I mean, "Wha??" awful. I've heard many a bootleg with far superior sound.
I would suggest getting the "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends," "Works Live," or "King Biscuit Flower Hour" sets first. All are from legitimate sources, and the first two together offer a pretty complete portrait of ELP live in the 70s. "KBFH" is a two-disc set combining a "Works Live"-era performance (from the latter part of the tour) on the first disc with a 1974 version of 'Karn Evil 9' (as well as multimedia material) on the second disc. It's a worthwhile addition to the other two live albums because, unlike "Works Live," the first disc is without an orchestra and includes a version of 'Pirates.'
Almost the Best of the Bootlegs.......2002-09-08
This is a gem for those not buying the two (all in all) 15CD Bootleg boxes! Escpecially if you think extended and very different improvisations of the same tunes, and eccentric performances, may not quite be your thing - and you still enjoy ELP and progressive adventurous music.
On this 2CD you'll get the essence of ELP live in the 70's, even if the bootleg sound is not quite up to their incredible live recordings "Pictures at an Exhibition" and "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends". Here, finally, you'll get to hear the pieces left out from other live recordings, like Barbarian, Knife Edge and The Endless Enigma.
The only misgiving is that the Pictures performance from Buffalo in 74 is not included. That was the occasion when Keith Emerson again managed to surprise Mr. Bob Moog (whose headquarter was in Buffalo) with what his instrument could do.
Still, whether you're into covers, linar notes or even the music, this very much shows why ELP was the greatest live band of them all in the 70's, surpassing Floyd, Stones and Zeppelin, even if one forgets about that carpet.
ELP Bootlegs.......2002-05-14
Well it makes me mad that they came out with this CD after I already bought the other two boxsets but that's the way things go I guess!? Anyway this CD is worth getting if you are a diehard ELP fan. It has some of their best performances from the 70's which was their best years.
