The movie is a 1970s take on 1950s musicals, providing all the kitsch anyone could hope for. It's John Travolta as Danny Zuko as Olivia Newton-John's pompadoured main squeeze, and the kids go crazy. Fresh from his astronomical success with Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, Bee Gee Barry Gibb penned the title track (sung by Frankie Valli). Sha Na Na is over-represented, and actress Stockard Channing struts her, um, versatility, singing a couple of tracks. This has become a touchstone in American culture, and so isn't likely to improve our standing in the world's eyes. Maybe the point is that it's supposed to sound amateurish, but it does manage to eke out some fun, most notably on the hit "You're the One That I Want." --Scott Wilson
Customer Reviews:
Several Weak Tracks.......2007-06-27
The only thing holding this album back from being consistentatly a 5 star critic's favorite is the fact that it contains several weak tracks, and the title song Grease is possibly the only legitimate song that will bring back nostalgia for those that liked the movie and the singing in the musical. I always thought they were stuck in the 50s, but they've updated it to like the 70s or maybe even 90s, but still not modern enough for my tastes. The music is well crafted filler to a classic movie that will only date with time.
Throwback music.......2007-05-29
If you hav ever seen the movie than you already know, and if you haven't, then you need to. It is a classic American musical, with great oldies music. Highly recommeded.
Very Upbeat Songs.......2007-05-21
Listening to the music from Grease brings back the good memories of watching the movie. The music is funny (Summer Nights; Beauty School Dropout; Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee; Greased Lighting), touching (There Are Worse Things I Could Do; Hopelessly Devoted To You) and very 70's (Blue Moon; Rock "n" Roll Is Here To Stay; Born To Hand Jive). John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing great, but the supporting cast (Stockard Channing, Sha-Na-Na), also contribute to a good sound. Great rock and roll!
Classic nostalgia .......2007-05-03
I of course remember when I was eight years old when Grease came out and I played the singles to death on the turntable. Revisiting now I remember how *cumbersome* it is. The first ten tracks are absolutely essential. They are the strength and reflection of the soundtrack and what makes the movie go.
Any listener should not be remiss about the cumbersome nature of the soundtrack. One can skip over easily the songs they don't like. Not like the ol' turntable vinyl where that convenience was not there. Let's face it, too much Sha-Na-Na is too much Sha-Na-Na.
Overall, it's a great buy for the asking price for those who remember. A versatile Travolta and Newton-John strutted their stuff in a time they could do no wrong. And contributions by Franki Valli, Channing and Avalon make this a good listen.
A feel-good, sing-along soundtrack.......2007-04-14
Although I'm not usually a fan of movie soundtracks, my one big exception is Grease! Who wouldn't love this collection of sing-along songs that brighten your mood no matter when, or how often, you listen to them? Since Grease is also one of my all-time favorite movies, hearing the songs automatically makes me recall the particular scene they correlate with, and I invariably start smiling.
Grease consists of many talented actors and actresses, most of whom could sing as well as they could act. Therefore, each song -- including numerous solos by John Travolta, Oliva Newton-John and Stockard Channing -- is a treat to listen to.
If I were only allowed to bring one CD to the proverbial deserted island, Grease would probably be it! This is one purchase that will pay off, time and time again.

Sitting in the balcony at the final preview of this 1964 Jerry Herman show, still very much in school and long before my career as a critic began, I knew somehow that I was witnessing theatrical history. Even as that callow youth, I was certain that Carol Channing had been born to play the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, the meddling turn-of-the century New York widow who had been adapted from Thornton Wilder's straight play The Matchmaker. Channing has proved me right by playing the role ever since, of course, miraculously only improving with age. Beyond Dolly herself, however, the musical emitted a synergistic exuberance (at least five years before we used the word "synergy"). The supporting cast, including David Burns, Eileen Brennan, and Charles Nelson Reilly, were terrific. Herman's tunes and lyrics were sublimely crafted both to create their characters and stand alone. (The title song took on a life of its own.) The show's designers, librettist Michael Stewart and director Gower Champion, combined to transport the audience to 60 years earlier in little old New York. This wasn't all just my opinion: Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tonys. The original cast recording can still take you to that other time and place, even if you didn't see the original show. But, at the risk of offending my inner adolescent, the 1994 revival, naturally starring Channing, was even better--both on stage and on disc. --Robert Windeler

Wonderful Soundtrack.......2007-06-27
This is the original recording, with all of the best names included. Wonderful, wonderful music.
DOLLY WILL NEVER GO AWAY.......2007-05-17
Great re-mastering of original BWay cast album with wonderful other Dollys, particularly Pearl Baily who makesHello, Dolly! (1964 Original Broadway Cast) (Deluxe Edition) the title tune her own. It is still a great score and a delight to own.
The excitement is there, but............2007-01-24
Hello Dolly is one of my favorite shows. When you listen to the cast album, you really do--as others have said--feel the excitement of being there on opening night when Broadway history was being made. The wonderful RCA cast album has been a best seller for 43 years. But while I do feel it is necessary for any musical fan to have this cast recording in their collection, this is not personally my "Dolly" album of choice. I have three of the 5 major DOLLY recordings in my collection; this Original Cast, the Barbra Streisand movie soundtrack, and the Mary Martin London cast on LP (the others I do not have are the Pearl Bailey cast album and the Carol Channing revival). My preferred recording is a tie between the movie soundtrack and the Mary Martin album, with this one trailing (not far) behind. As far as the supporting cast are concerned, the original cast wins hand down. But HELLO DOLLY is really about the star, and in my opinion, Carol Channing can't sing...err, croak...her way out of a cardboard box. I realize that that is Channing's trademark, but it just doesn't work for me. As I said, this album is required equipment in any serious musical lover's collection, but I think that I too will "stick with Streisand." And for God's sake, I wish RCA would get off their rump and get the Mary Martin cast album out on CD, and reissue the Pearl Bailey cast album too while they're at it!
Goodbye, Dolly!.......2005-10-30
This Deluxe Edition of the orginal "Hello, Dolly!" has three distinct problems.
For starters, this is not the classic musical that afficianados would have you believe, nor is it Jerry Herman at his best (that honor goes to "Mame"). Rather, this is a fair to middling score with three socko numbers (title tune not included), three rather fine songs (title song included) and the rest either average or inadequate. "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By" are two of the most galvanizing songs ever written for the Broadway stage and no singer can detract from their euphoric energy (though Carol Channing tries -- more on that later). "So Long, Dearie", though slower in tempo than Barbra Streisand's definitve rendition, is a showstopping character song that's both clever and compelling. These three numbers are what gives "Dolly" it's class and they are three of the best things Herman ever wrote. Then we have "Dancing", "Elegance" and (gulp!) the by now overly familiar title song, each an accomplished tune that propels the plot with, well, elegance. The song "Hello, Dolly!" may now annoy as a Broadway warhorse, but it was as fresh as daffodils when it first premiered. The rest of the score, sadly, isn't up to these standards. "It Takes a Woman" and "It Only Takes a Moment" are indistinguished at best, and "Ribbons Down My Back" is downright annoying. Worse still, "I Put My Hand In" is a lackluster opener that pales in comparison to "Just Leave Everything to Me", its replacement in the movie and a bonifide Jerry Herman rouser. And "Motherhood" sounds like exactly what it was, a stage wait for the scenery to move in. Totally expendable.
The second problem here is that this may be the worst sung original cast recording in Broadway history. Charles Neslon Reilly's wobbly tenor struggles to maintain pitch, Eileen Brennan's stilted soprano sounds more like light operetta than musical comedy, and David Burns makes his movie counterpart, Walter Matthau, sound like Mario Lanza in comparision. Then there is Dolly, the incomprehensibly overrated Carol Channing. From her first froggy notes in "I Put My Hand In" you know it's going to be rough sledding and, sure enough, she croaks and screeches her way through one song after another, rendering most of what she sings unlistenable. Channing's voice is thin, harsh and completely unequalized throughout its range and she effectively saps all of the charm out of "...Sunday Clothes" and "Parade". By the time the recording has ended, you want to banish this CD to a deserted island. But wait, there's more! An almost unrecognizable Mary Martin starts the "extras" on this disc with a shock. Some of her last recordings, these "Dolly" numbers unfortunately display how Martin's once lovely instrument had deepened and thickened over the years. A full throttle but somewhat tremulous Ethel Merman fairs little better on some poorly recorded songs added to the show when she took over. These two giants actually make the songs Pearl Bailey does on this disc seem all the more astonishing. While arguably not as talented as Martin or Merman (although, in reconsidering this recording and her career, I think I'm entirely wrong in that observation), Bailey hits a home run on each of her renditions and her recording of the title song is absolutely definitive. Someone should quickly get the cast recording of her "Dolly" back in circulation. "She" and "we" deserve it.
The final problen here is a lengthy recent interview with Ms. Channing that has to be heard to be believed. Does she actually think we're buying the idea that she was doing high kicks in the studio while recording her songs? Please! She barely catches her breath between phrases. And her comparing her premonition that the show would be a hit to a passage in the bible is as laughable as it is sacriligious. Yes, she may have done the show over 5000 times, but she lucked into a classic without earning her own classic status. No wonder all she could do was repeat herself for the rest of her career. Stick with Streisand.
And I guess from the reviews of THIS review, disliking Channing is sacriligous. I better watch my back.
Toxically Corny!!!!.......2005-01-22
A lot of my friends wonder why I violently detest Broadway Musicals so much. Well, this particular recording is at least one reason why. Exposed to this piece of Toxic Schlock at a very young age (about 4 I reckon), and ever since, for me it has epitomized EVERYTHING I detest about musicals, the thin corny plots, even cornier songs, people breaking out into song at the most ridiculous times and so much glitz that my system nearly went into toxic shock. The worst part of it all, CAROL CHANNING!!!! This woman CANNOT SING TO SAVE HER LIFE, PERIOD!!!
I've even asked people who DO like B'way what is the deal with her? I hear it's that she has charisma. OK, since when does charisma equal talent (I honestly believe they are NOT the same thing).
And I have even tried to listen to other musicals over the years, and I just CANNOT get the appeal of it on ANY level! I guess this is well-done as these things go (there is work involved), but I just CANNOT understand what the fuss is all about.
Signed,
One perplexed Owl.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03
The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.
Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26
Well here we are with a great piece of history.
This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.
Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06
I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.
Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.
This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.
The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.
If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15
Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

Composer John Powell pays homage to this film's Eurocentrism and modern setting with a spare, twitchy main title and other cues that evoke a winning cross-pollinization of the oeuvres of Thomas Newman and David Holmes. Combining organic orchestral elements with electronic flourishes to good effect, that jazz-influenced, post-modernist tack quietly propels the best moments here. The score's main shortcomings are predictable: Thunderous blasts of percussion cadences and thrash guitar that have become expected contemporary action movie cliches. Yet Powell manages to freshen even some of those with intriguing new timbres. Like the suspense caper genre itself, it's a score where the pay-off is not nearly as interesting as the getting there. --Jerry McCulley

My Favorite Movie Score!.......2007-05-28
This is a soundtrack with upbeat driving rhythms I never seem to tire of even after nearly 3 years. Though, as with other reviewers I was disappointed about so many tracks by other artists not being included.
One of my favorite non John Powell tracks was the transition music just after the Venice heist to the cast being in the Alps.
For ages, I tried to locate the song "Girl and Posse Surf" by Paul Haslinger, but even after nearly 3 years was unable to do so.
Finally, with an email to the right person I discovered the awesome track which had long eluded me was not called "Girl and Posse Surf" after all.
The song is called "Let's Go" and can only be listened to via Mr. Haslinger's website. It can not be purchased on any soundtrack or any cd. Though, hopefully one day it will become available.
But, until then, if you love that particular piece of music in the "Italian Job", at least you can listen to it on Mr. Haslinger's website ([..]).
All other non John Powell tracks are available for download or purchase.
In summary, I would highly recommend John Powell's music score. It's great music to drive to, workout to, clean the house to etc.
No Money???.......2006-10-29
The one song I was looking to buy this for was 'money' buy velet revolver. I can't believe it is not on the soundtrack??? It played during the movie, then in the end credits - the guitar solo is killer!!!! How can they leave it off the soundtrack???? Yes that is correct, because of money...
It does not have all the music from the movie (alas, a dissapointment) but the score itself is...Good........2005-07-19
Like most, I became severely peeved when I bought this c.d. and realized that most of the songs I had had stuck in my head were not there. I was angry and strongly considered returning the c.d. when I looked at my receipt and low and behold, there, in small print where the words "cannot be returned if opened." And my c.d. (as it was) was opened. So, I gave a big sigh and stared at the c.d. for a while, then decided to get my eighteen bucks worth out of it. I stuck it in my boombox and decided to evaluate it.
The intellegence of this c.d. takes a while before it really hits you. Yes, it does not have all the songs from the movie on it, but in the grand scheme of things, it does not truly need it. I listened to the c.d. long and hard for a while before it struck me: This...is cool. John Powell, while having produced much better soundtracks (I am Sam, The Bourne Supremacy) proved himself as having a way with digital noises, drums, and orchastrations. This is a clever c.d. I like it. Listening to it when I'm at home loafing around is actually quite fun, and gives me time to really appreciate what a neat soundtrack this really is.
Anyway....This is a good c.d. It is catchy, and has a nice beat to it. I really enjoyed listening to it. However, be forewarned: This does not have the rock and techno tunes in it. If that's what you're looking for, move on. For the rest, buy this c.d. It is smart and clever. You'll like it.
A Big Mistake.......2005-04-02
There are some great moments on this sound track, and some very interesting orchestrations, but the One Glaring Omission is Roger Waters, MONEY.
MONEY is in the film, and over the closing credits, but not on the disc - THIS is the reason I would have bought the cd.
It's ingenuity sneaks up on you..........2005-01-23
The Italian Job was a score that really took me by surprise. I went to a local store, bought it, popped in my car cd player and listened on the ride home. At a first listen, I was a bit disappointed. For the most part, it seemed a bland, themeless series of percussion variations with minimal instrumentation layered on. I shelved the cd, not expecting to return. Then, a couple months later, I pulled it out again. Then I started noticing some of the ways Powell was doing things with the music very subtly, crafting an extremely cool, slick and well-developed score at a low volume. Often with action scores, the music is simple and bombastic, easy to recognize themes. This one is smarter and slicker than that, though. The Italian Job is a score that you will grow to appreciate and enjoy more with each listen. You will also find this to be the case in Powell's "paycheck" score as well as the two "bourne" scores. (The Bourne Identity especially takes time to appreciate, but partially because it actually does have genuine flaws.) I highly recommend this score, it's terrific, especially in the highlight track "A new plan". The only weakness is that the score dives into bloated action music in the final few tracks, it's entertaining, but not up to the subtle standard of the rest. A recommended purchase.

What a wonderful album! The performances are top notch and the arrangements are beautiful. If you enjoy musicals, I think you'll enjoy this album.
Wonderful - Very Entertaining - As If You Are There.......2005-08-26
I agree with most all the other reviewers, I also felt Ms Peters did not put her best effort there, Michael Ball would have presented "Time Heals Everthing", as it should be, Still, Its Bernadette's song, and appreciated. Over all this CD is wonderful listening, too bad it was not released in video or DVD. Buy it, you won't be sorry if you are a true Broadway fan. Would love to hear it on a DVD Audio release (at least).
Great album despite the synthesizer.......2004-03-08
This album has some amazing performances on it- Rita Moreno's "I Won't Send Roses" is one of the only two song recordings that literally bring me to tears every time. The only drawback: the orchestra is small and has a synthesizer instead of a string section.

ANN DEE~MYSTERY SINGER OF ROSE OF WASHINGTON SQUARE! .......2006-06-12
Thoroughly Modern Millie is a corny little movie filled with bloated egos...a classic and very soulful singer Miss Ann Dee (Angela DeSpirito) sold her legendary San Francisco "Ann Dee's 440 Club" a famed night club where Ann developed and showcased numerous big name talent such as Lenny Bruce, Ernestine Anderson, Johnny Mathis and many others to come to LA to embark on a solo singing career and by this time Ann Dee was already well into her forties..."Free Again" is a timeless classic Capitol Records lp filled with thrilling performances including the definitive version of "If He Walked Into My Life" from the musical "Mame" and the brilliant and hauntingly gorgeous medley "Carnival/This Dream" which is high vocal art at its very finest! "Free Again" was produced by avant-garde producer David Axelrod and beautifully arranged by the legendary Ernie Freeman...Ann Dee was so incredible in concert performing these wonderous classics with such passion and tremendous vocal beauty that she received numerous standing ovations every night over the years in always packed-out clubs (was the wildly successful "house singer" at the Beverly Hills "Ye Little Club" for many years) where one could find a wide array of the famous such as Judy Garland, Timi Yuro, Edith Piaf, Toti Fields, Carmen McRae, Johnny Ray, Margaret Whiting, Dorothy Collins, Yvonne De Carlo, Gordon MacRae, Alexis Smith, Joanie Sommers, Regis Philbin to name just a few in her adoring audience...hopefully this lost vocal masterpiece will someday be released on Compact Disc if Capitol Records ever wakes up and realizes what a glorious treasure they have in their vault deserving to be remastered and released! Ann Dee was next cast in this lame and superficial Hollywood Musical and was thrilled but soon found that she would be pushed into the background by the greedy "stars" of this movie who were threatened by her magnificent talent (especially vocal!) and didn't want to share the spotlight or residuals with her...this was why Ann Dee did not receive any billing for her glorious performance that is clearly the finest vocal on this otherwise tired soundtrack filled with cartoon like baffonish performances. Ann was deeply hurt by all of this and the real kicker is that Ann Dee received no billing at all on the original soundtrack lp for her sublime performance of "Rose Of Washington Square" and was listed only as "vocal blues singer"...for shame and this needs to be corrected!!!! May Ann Dee rest in peace and she is loved and missed by many...and the 5-Stars are all for you Angel as you earned every one of them!!!
FUN SOUNDTRACK/BAD SOUND.......2005-02-05
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" was probably the most superficially enjoyable movie that Julie Andrews ever made--no depth at all, but loads of fun. The soundtrack album is also fun to listen to, but probably won't mean as much to people who've never seen the film.
The only reason I gave this CD 3 stars is its poor sound quality. I've still got the record album and believe me, the CD sounds EXACTLY like the record except for the absence of surface noise: thin, tinny, and with little bass response. The CD mastering gives no added clarity or frequency response. In short, the engineers obviously used the same master that the record was made from, a master than was equalized and compressed within an inch of its life. If they had bothered to go back to the original session tapes, this album would have sounded much better. You can hear the proof on the compilation CD that Rhino put out several years ago called "Thoroughly Modern Julie." The only song that's from the movie is the title track, but you will be amazed at the difference in sound quality: this version has much better clarity, presence, and frequency response. Let's hope that someday "Thoroughly Modern Millie" will be given the audio restoration it deserves.
Thouroughly Modern Millie-a great CD for everyone!.......2002-12-09
As a twelve year old broadway lover, when I first saw the play I immediatly fell in love with it. The music (all included on the CD) is so wonderful, everyone deserves to know about it!!!!
The Thouroughly Modern Millie music is appropriate, and funny. There is not a large amount of bad language and is very clean. The music has a fast tempo and a jumpy sound. It makes you want to jump up and dance! I would buy this CD for sure- with no doubt! From what I've told you, wouldn't you agree?
a fantastic score.......2002-12-04
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE was producer Ross Hunter's attempt to re-create THE BOY FRIEND, in which Julie Andrews had starred on Broadway. MGM held the movie rights to BOY FRIEND and would not sell them to Universal. Eventually MGM would turn THE BOY FRIEND into a rather-misguided film starring Christopher Gable and Twiggy.
The story of THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE concerns one Millie Dillmount (Julie Andrews), a simple girl from the country who comes to the Big Smoke looking for love, excitement and most importantly, Mr Right. Along the way Millie meets up with demure Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), hooks up with a lively paperclip salesman Jimmy (James Fox) and fights off white-slaver Mrs Meers (Beatrice Lillie). Joining in the fun are carefree society dame Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing) and Millie's dashing boss Mr Trevor Graydon (John Gavin).
The songs are a perfect blend of 20's standards as well as brand-new numbers. Julie is at her best singing "Jimmy", "Poor Butterfly" (which includes the scene dialogue that accompanies it in the film), and the catchy Title Song.
Carol Channing adds her brassy vocals to the showstopping "Jazz Baby" and "Do It Again". James Fox is wonderful during the "Tapioca" number.
With THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE currently gracing Broadway in an all-new production, now is the perfect time to fall in love with the fantastic film score.
Highly-recommended.
A class act!!.......2002-11-14
Wonderful Oscar winner score!. One of the most remarkable works by Andre Previn and Elmer Bernstein. The "title song", "Tapioca" and "Poor Butterfly" are my favourite ones. I've been waiting for this CD a long time and finally it's a honor to listen to it.
Thanks for giving me the chance of remembering this unforgetable soundtrack.

Amazing.......2007-06-01
I have'nt heard the Original Original (from 1964). I can only assume this is a case of The Emperors New clothes and no one had the courage to kill this recording at birth. Whoever had the idea that asking Carol Channing to revisit the part of Dolly Levi was worthwhile deserves to be drummed out of the Entertainment Industry. In case there is any confusion this recording is dire. It sounds like Walter Mattau after a very heavy night on the tiles (I have no reason to assume Walter M ever had a heavy night on the tiles). The only reason to buy this is to give confidence to anyone who fancies trying musical theatre and thinks their voice is not up to scratch. If this can reach Broadway there is hope for anyone. I am only familiar with a few recordings of Dolly but would suggest that so far Barbra Striesand in the movie is the best bet if its music you enjoy.
Variation on Original Cast Album w/ Plus & Minus.......2006-07-01
The 1994 Farewell Tour revival album of Dolly is smart, snappy & of interest to fans, tho I doubt it replaces the original cast album for warmth & charm. Channing is amazing but not in good voice (if you doubt she ever had a good voice listen to her on the legendary Jazz Baby CD). The revival version of Ribbons Down My Back by Florence Lacey sets a new standard for that number. At times the chorus energy seems a bit forced rather than hitting the right tone for this tuneful highly agreeable musical adaptation of The Matchmaker. This version should not replace the original, but make a good addition to anyone's collection of major Broadway musicals.
RETIRE DOLLY.......2005-06-17
FIRST THE GOOD NEWS-THIS IS THE FIRST NEARLY COMPLETE RECORDING OF THE "DOLLY" SCORE INCLUDING "THE WAITERS GALLOP" THE FRANTIC AND ENERGETIC DANCE THAT PRECEDES THE TITLE NUMBER. NOW FOR THE BAD NEWS-WHETHER YOU LIKE HER OR NOT THE CHARM ABOUT CAROL CHANNING IS HER VOICE WHICH SOUNDS LIKE A STRANGULATED DUCK-ON THIS RECORDING AND WELL INTO HER SEVENTIES SHE SOUNDS MORE LIKE A COMATOSE DUCK. SO MY SUGGESTION IS BUY THE ORIGINAL CAST ALBUM WHEN HER UNUSUAL VOICE HAD ITS VIBRANCY AND BUY THIS FOR ITS COMPLETENESS WITH NOSTALGIA FOR WHAT USED TO BE.
Dolly (and Carol) are back where they belong!.......2003-10-28
HELLO DOLLY! is still one of musical theatre's crowning-glories. The original 1964 production catapulted Carol Channing into the annals of Broadway folklore and the role became her signature performance.
In 1994, Carol Channing and DOLLY! came back to Broadway for a limited-run revival. Channing has lost few steps since originating the role and turns in a fabulous performance. Like a fine wine, her performance and portrayal of Dolly grew richer and more honed.
Channing was surrounded by a strong cast including Florence Lacey as Irene Molloy, Jay Garner as Horace Vandergelder, Michael DeVries as Cornelius Hackl, Cory English as Barnaby Tucker and Lori Ann Mahl as Minnie Fay.
Florence Lacey sings a deeply-affecting "Ribbons Down My Back", DeVries and English are wonderful with "Dancing" and Jay Garner is the perfect stuffy foil to Channing's manic and free-wheeling matchmaker.
There are many differences to the original 1964 cast album, including the addition of a new, longer Overture, and the extended sequence to "Dancing". Sound quality is also very impressive, though the original cast album's sound quality is still as fresh as paint.
Get this superb CD today (or buy both albums if you have yet to discover the joys of this landmark Broadway show).
Wonderful recording of the beloved score.......2003-07-11
Jerry Herman's score for "Hello, Dolly!" has its lesser points: a few underwhelming songs like "It Takes a Woman," "It Only Takes a Moment" and "Motherhood" and an undeniably hokey title song. However, it also has several genuine showstoppers, including "Put On Your Sunday Clothes" and "Before the Parade Passes By," the beautiful "Ribbons Down My Back" and a couple of irresistable charm songs, "Elegance" and "So Long Dearie." And even that title song, hokey as it is, is also undeniably one of the greatest numbers Broadway has ever produced in terms of sheer galvanizing energy - audiences have been giving it standing ovations for just about 40 years.
This recording must surely be one of the best, if not possibly *the* best, recording of the score out there, because the entire cast gives such a spirited (and, in my opinion, thoroughly professional) performance that the weak songs sound great and the great ones sound greater still. Carol Channing's voice takes an awful lot of getting used to, but her take on Dolly is so undeniably original and, after a while, so thoroughly enjoyable that you wonder how anyone can *not* say she *is* Dolly Levi. And having seen her in the movie "Thoroughly Modern Millie," I know in person she has great capacity to entertain an audience, which must be made even greater in a live theatre. Although, as I said, the entire cast is professional and spirited, the only other standout is Florence Lacey, who may be out of the traditional age range for ingenue Irene Molloy, but has such a lovely voice, used to particularly wonderful effect in "Ribbons Down My Back," that it hardly matters.
Though I have yet to hear the original Broadway cast recording, or others featuring Pearl Bailey and Mary Martin, I have heard the film soundtrack and seen the film it came from, and despite Barbra Streisand's incredible singing, that recording just doesn't make you revel in the wonders of this score from the first listen like this one does.

Customer Reviews:
Total Carol Channing Fan.......2007-06-09
I saw this show on Broadway some years ago. It is great to have it available on cd at last. Although the show didn't get good reviews, when it opened I thought it was in fact better than the original Gentlemen Prefer Blonds... For sure this cd has more songs and better sound than the original broadway show ...
Only Carol is Lorelei.......2005-09-04
Had the good fortune of seeing Carol perform this show in the seventies and the recording is magnificent. Basically it is a "redo" of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. It keeps the good songs and adds a couple of new ones. The score is also jazzier and with a larger orchestra than the original. If you're a fan of the original, buy this (even more so if you're a fan of Carol)
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES with a different title!.......2004-08-13
LORELEI is a remake-sequel to GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, once again starring the fabulous Carol Channing as Lorelei Lee. Jule Styne collaborated with old pals Betty Comden and Adolph Green, who wrote some new songs to fit amongst the previous numbers from GPB by Styne and Leo Robin. LORELEI started out as a national tour (during which all the wrinkles were ironed out), before going to Broadway, where it met with mixed reviews and quickly shuttered. Curiously, a cast album was recorded at the start of the tour, preserving the many numbers that were subsequently cut prior to Broadway; and another cast album was duly recorded after the Broadway opening. This reissue on the Decca Broadway label combines both albums, presenting the cut numbers from the tour album restored to their running-order in the show. Channing was surrounded by a strong cast including Peter Palmer (Broadway's original LI'L ABNER), Brandon Maggart and Lee Roy Reams (both fresh from APPLAUSE) as well as the leggy Tamara Long (from DAMES AT SEA), with Dody Goodman in the role of Ella Spofford (played by Alice Pearce in BLONDES). As a brand-new musical, LORELEI falls flat because it relies too much on GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. Still, the musical has a lot of charm. Just listen to Channing's infectious "Men" or the toe-tapping Title Song performed by Peter Palmer (amazingly cut during the national tour!). A top job from Decca Broadway.
Enjoyable recording of a second-rate production.......2004-02-11
LORELEI is a show that exists mainly because of producers' greed: Cash in on Carol Channing's popularity by reviving her early hit GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. Design the show for easy touring, make back all the money on the road, come into New York a hit.
It didn't quite work. The road tour lost money and the New York run was less than successful.
The recording works quite well with good stereo sound, and fine performances generally. The CD features all of the score as heard in the pre-Broadway cast album and also weaves in four numbers recorded after the New York opening. The best of these is Channing's showtopping first act finale "Men" (which she also performed to acclaim on the Tony Awards that year.) The worst is a dreadful performance of "It's Delightful Down in Chile" by Jack Fletcher. Ouch!
Sony's Broadway cast album of BLONDES is still the best capturing Carol Channing in a fresher voice and performance. But despite it being a hit in 1949 it was already out-of-date then, and the years have not been kind to this score.
I prefer this blonde as well as the original!.......2003-11-24
LORELEI is a sequel of sorts of the popular 1940s musical GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. Carol Channing returned to the role she made 25 years before as Lorelei Lee Esmond, widowed gold-digger. To accomidate Channing playing a role meant for someone younger, the musical was made a retrospective with several new songs written by July Styne and lyrics by the popular tandem of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The best of these new songs is "Men", a rollicking song for Channing. There was originally two recordings of this show: The 1973 touring cast, and the 1974 Broadway cast, with some slight additions and deletions of songs. Thankfully, Decca Broadway felt fit to remaster the recording, and combine the two albums into one recording. I suggest that you buy this CD as well as the Original Cast Recording of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES from Sony Records for a full appreciation of the score. (Now if only amazon.com would post a picture of the CD cover...)
