Louis Hardin, known to pre-Watergate New Yorkers as the blind street musician Moondog, is also a fascinating and sui generis composer. This disc collects 1969 recordings of his orchestral works and 1972 small-group recordings of the two-minutes-and-under "rounds and canons" that are his most influential work. Janis Joplin covered his "All Is Loneliness," you can hear foreshadowings of Stereolab in his "Madrigals," and you only need to hear "Theme" to hear how profoundly he influenced Michael Nyman. Simple and beautiful, Moondog's rounds owe as much to the swing he heard on the radio in his youth as to Bach's canonical structures, and they vary as little and as much as roses in a row. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
Admirable communion with life.......2007-04-26
Blind he is our Moondog, but he does not bark for pity. He listens to and reproduces what he can capture with his ears. That means his work is a tremendous compilation of sounds from the real world, animals or just insects, his own baby and his own wife, or just some beating on a drum, or the frail dancing of a pipe along with a frog and a cricket. It is this extreme patchwork of sounds, voices, noise and music under the light enchantment from the moon that our artist is imagining in his eternal night. At least for him the moon never sets, never disappears over or behind the hills. "Surf Session" is the only piece that has some real length. The sea surf, the sea waves, the breaking of these waves we imagine along some pebbly seaside give a strange depth to the very both Asian and tremendously romantic music that manages to float forever over the rather powerful vortex of the sea, the ocean. The nearly Chinese constant grace-notes give the music a charm that is both discrete and so strong we seem to be able to imagine some Last Emperor advancing in the Forbidden City just before defeating his beleaguered wife and sons under the sign of some golden flower. The "Street Scene" is less fascinating because it is aimless, it lacks a direction and a destination? "I must never follow you and you must never follow me." He is roaming on and on, around and around, in that incessant, menacing, mechanical noise that comes up from the New York street locked up in between the walls of surrounding buildings. Can that be life? And what can it sound like to a blind man? Is it worse or less violent than what the famous Arthur Miller's Salesman felt, heard and experienced in his trapped two storied house in the middle of surrounding skyscrapers and under the crushing noise of thousands of motor vehicles? We will never know, except if we decide to do what dipus did when he realized his criminal inability to see the fate that was his. And he lived ever after like a dog in the eternal night of his blindness remembering the moonshine and the sunshine, tolerating the insults and petty assaults from those whose yes are not bleeding dead.

F_kin' Hardcore.......2005-12-06
Louis T. Hardin did not graduate from the Juliard. He went to a school in Iowa and Memphis, but was mostly self taught. Listen to this with your eyes closed.
Eccentric Centrist.......2003-12-14
Odd-ball individuals are more common than geniuses, but Moondog is both. Harry Partch had the highest regard for this blind graduate of Julliard, whose fantastic get-up of skins, furs and horns might have detracted from the impact of less seminal music. Since he was immensely tall, he made quite an apparition. Moondog's primitivo get-up was odd, to say the least, but since Moondog was blind, one wonders who put the costume together. Moondog, like Harry, invented most of the instruments he played standing on the corener at the Avenue of the Americas. His music reaches back into prehistory in its effect, and has a kindness to it, if that may be a reasonable thing to say. Later, Moondog became sort of a darling of the avant garde, and composed for traditional instruments, but the earlier the recorded work, the more deep down and pure it was. The later work is slicker, but just as intelligent.

Customer Reviews:
Easily THE best Surf compilation I have heard!!!.......2004-01-31
Collecting original Surf music is a lot of fun. But, it also can be difficult and expensive. There were so many great songs between 1960 and '64, but not many strong instrumental surf albums. Well, with this single CD, you can pick up a lot of the very best Surf ever. "Big Surf" is a raging value with 32 stompin' reverb-drenched Surf instrumentals, and most all of them are great.
The Surf-music wave peaked for a brief four years in the early 60's and there were many great Surf instrumentals. But, there were also many uneven albums with just one or two quality Surf tunes. The rest of the numbers on most so-called Surf albums are many times pop or drag car songs. This leaves the collector with two choices: buy a lot of discs, most with only a couple great songs, or collect your Surf in compilations. The choice is yours.
On this CD you get the cream of five great Surf bands. Del-Fi artists the Sentinals, the Impacts, the Centurions, the Lively Ones and Dave Myers and the Surftones. These bands were some of the best and most faithful to the instrumental Surf music genre.
These guys played awesome Surf music, but were mostly not well-known! So this disc is a real find for the Surf fan who has lots of Ventures, Surfaris and Dick Dale and is looking for something a bit more pure and exotic.
Here's another thing that adds value to this collection...Del-Fi, the original record label of these bands, was recently bought out and it is not clear if or when their stuff will be reissued. They apparently can no longer sell their music and it's becoming tough to find. Well, once you have this disc you may not need to look for the individual CDs, because most all the killer songs are right here on "Big Surf".
Some of the most outstanding pure Surf on this disc comes from the Centurions. Their CD "Bullwinkle, part 2" is out of print and very hard to find. But you get eight of their best songs on this disc!
In my hunt for the best Surf music I've picked up quite a few CDs recently. There is a lot to wade through and there's a lot of junk out there. But by picking up just three discs, the super-vibrant "Big Surf", Del-Fi's smaller but similar "Wild Surf" and the german compilation "The World of Surf Music", you can own about half of the greatest original Surf instrumentals ever recorded. It's as simple as that.
Possibly the best collection money can buy.......2003-08-26
Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction didn't do very much for surf and instrumental rock other than sell a bunch of soundtrack albums. Pulp Fiction has one of the great soundtracks in film. But the album s[tin]ks. It's at best an average collection of songs put out to [make] money off [of]know-nothing Tarantino kids.
The Pulp Fiction album gives you 13 songs , this has 32 mostly superior songs . The Centurions' "Bullwinkle" is featured on both albums, Big Surf also has the equally good "Intoxica." And that's the story of the whole album.

Surf Muzak.......2002-03-25
There is a reason this CD is priced as it is. I originally purchased this CD several months ago and didn't like it so it went to the bottom of the pile. Have decided to give it another chance. It didn't get any better. The structure of the melodies may be correct but they are played in a lifeless manner. Wipe Out, Pipeline, Hawaii-5-0, and Apache are particularly weak. Walk Don't Run Sounds as though it is played 1/2 beat to slow. I kept wanting to speed it up. Listen for yourself and you will see what I mean. The single star is because it sounds like the recording of "Tequilla" is the original. It has some life!
Better choices would be to search for a named group such as Challengers, or The Ventures, then follow the links to what others have bought. Dick Dale is a good starting place for a high adrenaline sound in this kind of music. Listen before you buy. If you think this is as good as it gets you are selling yourself short. At least I got a good recording of "Tequilla."

SURF ADDICTS ONLY.......2005-09-10
Interesting 60's instrumental surf bands from from down under. They do not sound like Dick Dale but more like the ventures or the lively ones. Good instrumentals with pretty good sound : no rubbish but no fantastic tunes.

Man, this is one wild surf album! The back cover states "16 swingin' tunes for the tuffest of gremmies" and this couldn't be more true. Very authentic vintage sounds and song structures as well as great song writing. Definitely one of the most boss surf instro CDs in a long time!
