5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-06-29

This is an incredible album. I had their self-titled release and really liked it, and this is just as good. I think this one has better production, and the songs sound different from their first album. I highly suggest this album to anyone who likes good music. Get this while you can because great under the radar albums like this are not always there forever.

5 out of 5 stars The last great Punk record.......2005-12-13

This CD is one of the best punk CDs ever made. It has all the agression and frustration of early hardcore like Minor Threat and especially Black Flag, but it is combined with amazing musicianship, and later influences like Fugazi and early Sonic Youth, but it's still punk. This CD has many songs that are over 5 minutes long, and a few that are nearly 10! But it doesn't get boring or drag at all, as a matter of fact the longer numbers are the best and most compelling songs.
Fans of Fugazi will like this, fans of Sonic Youth and the Pixies might like this, and fans of the Locust would probably like this.
This is the record which formed a plethora of hyphenated sub-genres, math-rock, prog-punk, post-hardcore, etc.

The Swami reissue includes three rare gems: Two songs from the Merge 7" which is long out of print, and contains two of their snappiest and shortest numbers. And the original recording of "Sinews" which apeared on a compilation of San Diego punk bands. The original recording has a slightly different arrangement and is much moodier and atmospheric than the version that appeared on the original "Yank Crime", and is well worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars Sigh...another lost classic..........2005-11-20

They may have been neglected amidst the reams of grunge impersonators that dominated rock radio, but during their brief existence in the '90's Drive Like Jehu still managed to create some of the most vital and addictive rock of their time. Playing a brand of noisy indie rock that sounded a little like a lot of acts but a lot like none, these guys left a stunning valedictory with 1994's Yank Crime, a precursor to a great deal of the edgier rock that's been released since. When Drive Like Jehu set themselves to rocking (which was most of the time), they did so with a rollicking intensity and an unabashed catchiness that managed to emerge even amidst all the eardrum abuse. More importatntly, these songs are catchy on their own terms, without resorting to the cliched pop hooks that characterize pretty much everything on rock radio these days.

Combining punkish aggression and attitude with the complexity of math rock, Drive Like Jehu played emo before it became a dirty word. There was no whining here, just tons of manic energy and incendiary performances from all around. DLJ weren't on Steve Albini's notorious Touch & Go label, but one could be forgiven for believing otherwise-they were louder than Slint, less obnoxious than the Jesus Lizard, and less instrumental than Don Caballero, but still possessed the combination of adventurism and explosiveness for which that imprint was known. And yeah, I guess while I'm at the name-dropping I can say there are some parallels to Sonic Youth and Fugazi as well, putting DLJ in the company of several of the best bands of the '90's, albeit with a lot less hype.

With every member cranking the intensity and volume up to 11, Yank Crime is an out-of-control muscle car of an album, veering between short, sharp blasts of chaotic fury and longer, multifaceted compositions that let the band stretch out a bit without compromising an ounce of their intensity. The guitars of John Reis and Rick Froberg thrash about in all sorts of wild patterns, interlocking to form near-imprenetrable walls of noise or uncorking leads that sound about as pleasant as dentists' drills. Meanwhile, Froberg screamed, howled, and shrieked with reckless abandon and unparalleled enthusiasm over the dense rhythmic chug of Mike Kennedy and Mark Trombino. Some tracks go straight for the gut, and others have their ebbs and flows, but all are clenched, intelligent, and hard-driving. What more could you ask for from a rock album? And while I'm dispensing advice, be sure to check out Hot Snakes, who carried on the DLJ sound respectably during their three-album run.

i found these guys one day looking around on www.music-map.com . i get albums sometimes, and it's like, hey, this is okay, i'll never listen to it again. but this album, this is great, this is what i live for. and pretty girls

for fans of: at the drive-in, million dead, the blood brothers, sparta, fugazi, pretty much anything prog, aggro or d.c.-sounding

5 out of 5 stars What a difference a few dBs make.......2005-09-15

Sometimes a band rides their own rollercoaster: they carve a unique, new path through our concrete jungles and show us the way to rock salvation. Forget "emo" and "screamo", DLJ skipped the corny haircuts and eyeliner to concentrate solely on making the most thunderous and alive recordings that the human race has ever known. "Yank Crime", along with their self-titled release, is the most authentic album I've ever heard in respect to capturing a band at their most raw, most fevered and ingenious moment.

This CD (by the way...CDs really f**king blow) entered my stereo two years ago and has seldom been back in its case since. DLJ discard the notion of the 3-minute punk song: their brilliance can be found in their ability to make a long song never seem too sesquipedalian. "Here Come the Rome Plows" is a thrusting, churning masterpiece that never lets up. Among my favorites is "Luau", a 9+ minute brow-beater that showcases the frantic guitar-noise exchange that only John Reis and Rick Froberg could pull off.

I can sit here and list off the songs and talk about how neat they all are, but that just delays the obvious: if you're not about to add this to your cart (or whatever) then I'm afraid there's no hope for you. You REALLY don't want to go through life without having it, trust me. Also see Pitchfork, Rocket from the Crypt, and Hot Snakes.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2006-06-15

I must confess something. Until a few months ago I had never heard of this band. My favorite for quite a while was At the Drive-in and while I was reading an article about them it mentioned Fugazi and Drive Like Jehu as influences. I had heard of Fugazi, but who was this "Drive Like Jehu" they spoke of? I decided I would take the plunge and purchase this from only hearing one song from this album. I am very glad I did. This album is all over the place. I recommend ordering this while you can because it seems to be difficult to get a copy of this brilliant album.

5 out of 5 stars Good ol' Days.......2004-07-18

I was lucky enough to live in San Diego during the "next Seattle Years". I saw all of the SD bands and their offshoots during that time. When Jehu played you DID NOT miss that show. Jehu is one of my favorite bands of all time. Jehu's music is as good to me now as it was over ten years ago. I would go anywhere to see them live one more time. If you managed to read all of the reviews on Jehu here, you already know what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a pointy coat hanger!.......2003-12-08

I bought the vinyl, it was red, i laid it out on the turntable. It started to spin, I put the needle to the edge, and immediately I became aware that I was a despicable person. Oh to be enlightened!

My misanthropy has laid waste to every moment I have ever lived! I am not kididng you! This music was so good that my ears ACTUALLY STARTED ON FIRE! It hurt REALLY bad!

Luckily, the toilet was nearby, and I dunked my head into it to extinguish the flames.

The Hot Snakes are the same, but no where near as not-not-awesome!

5 out of 5 stars So damn good it hurts.......2003-09-15

I've had this album for a couple of years now -having been introduced to them through the Hot Snakes. It is simply one of the best albums in my collection. This album is what rock should be. It is like Coletrain, you can appreciate the mastery from the first listen, but the intricacy can only be understood after hundreds of listens. Mark Trombino is simply one of the finest drummers ever. It is a true shame that he is now only producing. This album is like In On the Killtaker era Fugazi, but dare I say . . . even better. More creative, more on the ragged edge, pure cathartic energy beating your head 'till it is bloody. Interscope was a pack of fools to ever let them go. Far better than the Hot Snakes (though I love them dearly). Buy this album now - hell buy two in case the first one gets scratched. If post-punk/mathrock is you're thang, you're never going to want to take this one out of your stereo.

4 out of 5 stars long live indie rock!.......2002-05-17

I got the CD version of this for Easter. I was excited to hear them. I then realize it said some expletive on the disc ... but thats only a minor complaint.
I turn it on. At first, quiet. then a guitar comes out of nowhere, and then it explodes. reminds me of a more melodic Rage Against The Machine doing jazz-fusion. abrasive yet melodic. favorites include "Caress", "Spikes To You", and "Turn It Off". However "O Pencil Sharp" is ok, but took awhile to get used to.
other than that, a great album by a great band. four stars

This album is solid. An antidote to Blink 182 and its ilk, even if drummer Mark Trombino later produced 182...but I digress. I highly recommend both Drive Like Jehu albums. True artwork, true clarity--a rare find.

Oh, and they're urban design visionaries: single entitled "Bullet Train To Vegas"

5 out of 5 stars This is the real thing.......1999-07-27

Yank crime is the second of two flawless albums from this San Diego quartet. Every track is underlined with mind searing guitars (care of John Reis, aka: Speedo from rocket from the crypt) and the pseudo-feminene vocals of Rick Fork. I've listened to this album every week since the day it came out, and have yet to grow weary of it's mathematical precision and emotional drain. What DLJ lack in marketing schemes (check out the album cover), they more than make up for in raw unadulterated talent. If you like this cd, try to find the genesis of this band, Pitchfork. You will not be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars How can you not have this Album?.......1999-03-21

No choice, you must get this album. DLJ alows you to hear what the word "different" really has to offer. Stop reading this and get it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence is never an accident.......1998-09-02

I have never seen a band perform live donning the kind of head-gear one usually sees on folks who want to protect their hearing while discharging firearms. That is, until I saw Drive Like Jehu. What was more disturbing was the discovery that such measures were taken not for the sake of novelty or absurdism, but for sheer necessity. JEHU ARE LOUD! I have never seen a band start with such a sparse skeleton of material and through repition, accumulate gradual sound mass that almost becomes too hairy and dense to locate it's original impetus and reference point. But, without warning, the group (almost telepathically) drops the extraneous, bringing it right back down to the song's basic figure. This kind of playing takes maturity. I would liken the music to that of Black Sabbath, Sonic Youth and Unwound playing scrabble without any vowels. This band makes Green Day sound like Sleater Kinney.

"Comfortable for you" have recorded an exceptional hardcore album and they give me hope especially in todays stale, commercialized, lets mask a boy band as a punk band and make alot of money era. If you like Hot snakes or the Refused you will find this album a valuable addition to your collection. Buy now!!!! I saw them play at the Casbah in San diego on Jan. 29th(last night)with my cynical friend, he's the one that came up with the Refused comparison and thats the ultimate compliment!.These kids are legit and are very much worth a listen!!!!
