A Bass Player's Dream.......2007-03-09
Wow! What an excellent historical overview of the string bass-an instrument that doesn't always get the attention it deserves. This anthology is a wonderful resource for my course about the jazz masters of the bass. Bravo!!

A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20
If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.
Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25
Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Album Description
Stereo Total's third album is a rogue Wurlitzer of a record, following the spirit of "Oh Ah" and "Monokini" while revealing new surprises. On "Juke Box Alarm", all the various sounds have been seamlessly woven into one sonic tapestry, the various patterns held together by a constant stream of highly unique synthesizer noises. While in the past Stereo Total have borrowed freely from a huge pot of influences, the ambitious mission at the onset of this project was to create something completely new, disregarding conventions and displaying no respect. A new kind of music, straddling the gap between pop and abstract, a sound that had never been made or heard before. The band tried out all kinds of combinations and succeeded in their mission. A strong dash of technology makes the record gurgle, bleep, and oscillate. Hot Chocolate meets the first Flying Lizards record in the Residents practice room under the supervision of Pierre Henry. Or something like that.

Sun Records and Elvis Presley will always be linked in the minds of music lovers, but Sam Phillips's storied label had a rich history before the arrival of the hillbilly cat (it all started July 5, 1954, with "That's All Right") and it continued to flourish after Phillips sold Presley's contract to RCA in late '55. Rhino's three-disc label anthology naturally hinges on Presley's recordings, swinging back to the gutbucket blues Phillips loved and forward to the rockabilly and country that became the foundation of the Sun sound in the late '50s. We Record Anything was Sun's motto, but Phillips had a finely honed ear for music that was authentic, energetic, and direct, an aesthetic that embraced everyone from Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King to Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash to Charlie Rich and Roy Orbison. The stable's leading lights are all represented in this package, but there's great fun to be had discovering the lesser-known likes of the Prisonaires, Sonny Burgess, and Billy Lee Riley. A 34-page booklet that includes an interview with Phillips rounds out this overview of what is arguably the most important imprint in rock & roll history. --Steven Stolder
Customer Reviews:
The hot, the cool and the birth of rock & roll.......2005-07-28
The Sun Records Collection
All in all, an enjoyable 3 disc set for those who like classic rockabilly, blues, country and early rock and roll. I will say that the remastering is not flawless, and a lot of the hissing, clicks and pops from the old tapes are still there. It adds character to the recording, yes, but it also sounds like ass on a good stereo. However, that is not true of every track and overall the remastered versions are cleaner. The breakdown disc by disc is as follows.
Disc 1 is mostly a blues disc with some spirituals and boogie woogie piano numbers. Notable artists are Howlin Wolf, BB King and Rufus Thomas. Fairly enjoyable if you dig on that sound. The gospel songs really stand out, especially "There's a Man in Jerusalem" by the Southern Jubilee Singers. This a capella song has outstanding harmony and the remastering brings out the bass vocals nicely. Blues highlights are "I'm Gonna Murder My Baby" by Pat Hare mainly because it's a pretty disturbing tune. Also, "Rocket 88" by Jackie Brenston is a hot song, bridging the gap between blues and early rock and roll.
The second disc kicks off the rock era, with Elvis' first song "That's All Right" starting things right. This disc is from the golden era of Sun, with songs from Elvis, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and Carl Perkins. Some highlight tunes are "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee" by Malcolm Yelvington, which I like because it is an odd rockabilly tune that reminds me of Screaming Jay Hawkins. Also, "Red Hot" by Billy "The Kid" Emerson is worth a mention because it's a decent little song that is covered by another Sun artist on the 3rd disc, and this version is about 8000% better than the cover by Billy Lee Riley. Other notable songs are Johnny Cash's first hit, "Cry Cry Cry," as well as his additional hits with the Tennessee Two "I Walk The Line" and Folsom Prison Blues." However, the show stopper on this album is the original "Blue Suede Shoes" by Carl Perkins.
Three starts out with another Sun superstar, Jerry Lee Lewis. Honestly, Jerry owns this disc with 8 tracks out of 26. Notables are his hits "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Breathless" and "Great Balls of Fire," the last being close to a theme song for Jerry. One of the more interesting tracks is the gospel song "Down By The Riverside" as it is performed by the "Million Dollar Quartet" of Carl Perkins, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. There are some interesting articles out there on the irony of that myth. Also interesting is Jerry Lee Lewis' cover of Hank Williams' "You Win Again." Its follows the lines of the original, but has some added vocals and such that make it a rock ballad. It also has the creepiest song in the world, "Right Behind You Baby" by Ray Smith, which is also apparently the first recorded song about stalking a woman.
Treasure Chest Of Early Rock.......2002-04-10
This is Music that wasn't motivated by fame and fortune. This cd collection features your early Elvis Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins,Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Howlin Wolf BB King and many others. It features your first rock song Rocket 88. The songs on the collection would go on to influence bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton as well as many others. I would recommend this collection to a true music fan.
Absolultely Essential for Historians/Fans.......2002-03-30
This superb Rhino box set collects the best of the enormous treasure trove of music recorded during the heyday of Sam Phillips' Sun Record Studio in Memphis. There is a wealth of material to pick from, but this release by Rhino is by far the finest, most informative, and affordable representation of the Sun legacy released to date. There is little marginal material included here. The story begins with "Rocket 88," believed by many to be the first rock and roll recording, and segues into haunting sides recorded by BB King, Joe Hill Louis, and Howlin' Wolf. The best of Elvis Presley's early Sun sides are here (including "That's Allright, Mama," and "Mystery Train," perhaps the most exciting 2 minutes of music ever waxed), as are the best output of Jerry Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, and Charlie Rich. The legacy continues into the early 60's with the country-flavored sides of Warren Smith and Billy Lee Riley. An extremely informative, well-researched booklet and discography penned by reknowned expert Colin Escott accompanies this flawless 3-CD survey of the most important record company in the history of recorded music.
If only ...........2002-03-09
Elvis hadn't succumbed to Col. Tom Parker and stuck to this material ("That's All Right,'' "Mystery Train''). He wouldn't have made as much money, but he probably would have lived longer and produced more rewarding work.
Beyond that, this is a wonderful set. Look at the material recorded in a relatively short period in 1954 and 1955 that still lives. From Johnny Cash ("Folsom Prison'' and "I Walk the Line"); Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes'') Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and on and on through Howlin Wolf, B.B. King, et. al. An interesting note in the booklet _ "Blue Suede Shoes'' was No. 2 on the pop and R%B charts, No. 1 in country. That's something that's rarely happened since in a comparmentalized market.
Interesting. Phillilps and Sun were clearly color blind before their time. So much so that they also produced "Ubangi Blues,'' a blatantly racist track that includes the "n'' word. It didn't offend me as much as it reflected how much society has changed in the last half-century.
This is worth of for Elvis.
But it's worth it for the others, too.
Beginnings are always so pleasantly humble.......2002-01-10
Great collection of music from many artists who went on to be legends. I am always partial to the early works of people who went on to be great stars - the days before their heads and their producer's bank accounts swelled.

These Immaculately Written, Produced and Sung Records Are Now Heralded as Some of the Era's Classics, Including "Kewpie Doll", "Round and Round", "ko Ko Mo", "Tina Marie", "Hot Diggity", "Catch a Falling Star", "Magic Moments, "Juke Box Baby", "Glendora, Dancin'" and "Just Born to Be Your Baby". Those Songs Featured the Era's Top Songwriters Like Burt Bacharach, Leiber and Stoller and Luther Dixon and Accounted for Millions of Records Sold. Now They're Joined by a Selection of Como's Other Uptempo Songs from 1945's "Hubba Hubba (Dig You Later)" to Early '60s Hits Like "Delaware" and "Caterina". In Between, There Are Even More Classics Like "Don't Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes" (The Biggest-selling Record of 1953!).
Customer Reviews:
Perry Como - The most versatile Crooner of them all!.......2006-08-11
One of the 20th Century's most legendary singers - Perry Como, is showcased here with a collection of mainly 'Juke Box' Hits. When all of his contemporaries fell down and out when the Rock 'N' Roll era came into fashion - Perry wasn't going to be down and out!
By the middle 1950's, Rock 'N' Roll had become the new 'thing', so crooners were somewhat disregarded. Except one very nice gentleman. Everybody's idea of a really nice guy witha beautiful voice - Perry Como!
We know that Perry didn't exactly love these tunes, but you wouldn't think for a moment that Perry didn't like 'Don't let the stars get in your eyes' if you didn't know. He sounds like he is having a ball. This all gives testimony to what a very versatile and professional singer Perry was.
This CD includes 30 Como numbers, all from the same era. All the classics are hear such as 'Kewpie Doll', 'Juke Box Baby', 'Ko ko mo (I love you so)' and 'Tomboy', plus some rarities such as 'Dancin'' (There is also a Mono 'alternate take' of 'Dancin'' on this CD - the original version is in Stereo and with a chorus and the Mono 'alternate take' is without a chorus, but the CD states otherwise!)
The sound quality is excellent on this CD and 'Bear Family Recoprds' have done a great job of remastering this CD with the sources they had.
Unfortunately, the sources used are not 1st generation master types and very likely vinyl records or possibly release masters in places. The reason for this is that 'Bear Family Records' originally released an LP called 'Juke Box Baby' by Perry Como back in 1988 and they credit one song - 'Bela Bella Sue' on the new CD as being recorded 1988, when it was recorded decades earlier. Another reason is that all the songs aren't shown in their correct sound representation - for example, some songs that are in Mono, were actually recorded in Stereo. Songs in Stereo for a rare occassion are songs such as 'Kewpie Doll'.
This is a great attempt at releasing a collection of Perry's 'Juke Box' - Rock 'N' Roll era hits, but some songs included don't come under either of these categories such as 'Angry' and 'Swingin' down the lane' - which are both from Perry's 1957 album 'We get letters' which really comes under the Jazz Genre!
This CD is basically a CD Release of the original LP from 1988, plus a great collection of bonus tracks. In total, there are 30 tracks on this CD and even though it is generally expensive to buy from many outlets - it is worth the money. However! I don't think if 'Bear Family Records' are going to charge high prices for their CD's, the sound quality should be 100% great (They should use 1st generation Master Tapes) and there should be no errors in recording dates, text, etc!
The CD also comes with a great booklet with many rare and alternate shots of popular Como photo's! The Como biography inside is far from what is desired! It includes some of the basic Como biography, then the liner notes writer decides to get clever and add some supposedly 'Unknown' facts, which I did already knew - but have been included in the wrong contexts and in a negative way towards Perry!
The discography - isn't a discography! It is basically detailed recording information on the 30 featured tracks on this CD!
One very pleasing thing to see on the back cover of the CD in the credits is 'Thanks to the late Perry Como'! It is very rare that a singer gets credit and thanks on a CD, especially now that it has been over 5 years since he passed away (May 12, 2001).
This CD gets 5 Stars straight away for Perry's unique talent. The actual CD overall has good intentions too, even though the effort could have been better - taking into consideration the high price!
Perry makes this CD 100% worth it and this is definitely a 'must' for Perry Como Fans of all ages and extents! It will also appeal to Music Fans who collect 'Rock 'N' Roll' Music - this CD covers the basis of Perry's Contribution to Rock 'N' Roll Music very well!
Thanks Mr. C!
Matthew Long
(An enormous Perry Como fan of a much younger generation!)

Hello, Buddies.......2003-10-30
Don Likes this thing. Brother Jukebox is a song like Mark Chesnutt and The Bulletproofs, Kenny Edwards, Keith Vaughan and Randy Medders. Jan Everly got Love At Last Sight on her album Restless in 2003. Jody Green got So Sad in 1989. Letting Go is a Song by the Johns Brothers, Edan, Chris and Jason Johns. Haley Davis tribute to her sister, Christina Davis-Green. Her sisters, Ramona, Tabitha and Sandy sing song on Haley's Album "Since You Broke My Heart." in 1992, Just like Somebody Will by Terry McBride. Ward Burton (Don Everly) sings Never Like This is appeared on the soundtrack like Bye Bye Love: The Everly Brothers Story in 1991. Deep Water is a song for Trinna Edwards on her album "Paint Me a Birmingham" as a single. Rusty, Brett, Alan and Davey sing Yesterday Just Passed My Way Again as an album in 1990. Julia Brett, Don's brother's Ex-wife sing Oh, What a Feeling on her 1977 album. Turn The Memories Loose Again is a song for Haley Davis on her album.
Brother Jukebox.......2000-01-30
I was music director for country music station WRCP AM&FM in Philadelphia when this LP by Don Everly came out in 1976. It blew me away then, and remains on my short list of all-time favorite albums. The backup musicians are all superb (especially Buddy Emmons on steel). And while not every cut is sensational, some are, in my opinion, among the finest recordings ever made in any genre. Standouts include Don's remake of the Everly Brothers' hit "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)," Fred Rose's classic "Deep Water" (a hit for Carl Smith) and Sanger D. & Darlene Shafer's heartbreakingly beautiful "Yesterday Just Passed My Way Again" (which was one of the last songs Lefty Frizzell recorded and easily one of the best recording he ever made). These are all "five star" performances and deserve a place on every music lover's jukebox.

Chuck Berry - 'One Dozen Berrys / Jukebox Hits' (Beat Goes On).......2006-07-30
Another worthy 2-lp's-on-1-CD title from the UK label Beat Goes On.Here, you get Berry's second lp 'One Dozen Berrys'('58)and his fifth longplayer 'Jukebox Hits'('61).For the record(no pun intended, but those two albums were originally pressed on the famed Chess label).Total of 24 tracks.Good to listen to late on a summer night, cuts like "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Guitar Boogie", "Reelin'& Rockin'", "Rock And Roll Music", "Route 66", "Run Around" and several others. An absolute should-have, specially for the asking price.
The Bible .......2006-06-06
One Dozen Berrys was The Bible for all Brit rockers ..this collection contains stuff you cant get elsewhere .. "It Dont Take But A Few Minutes" for instance,a great example of his C&W stylings cannot be found anywhere on his current releases plus this set contains Rockin At The Philharmonic, and Ingo; two great rare instrumentals . This 'two- fer' is an interesting and welcome re-release from this British label BGO (Beat Goes On )Check out their other Chuck Berry two -fer releases
On the ballad side!.......2003-02-03
As far as I know, this album is the 1st C.B.-album recorded to be an album.. I mean, it's not a collection of singles and "fillers", the way it used to be in early days.
Many people don't know how many-sided Chuck really is, and this album is a good change to get familiar with his ballad side. There is some latin-feelings (13 question Method), gentle blues (Sweet 16, a song by B.B. King, not Chuck's original Sweet Little 16, as mentioned in the song list!!), jazzy pop-ballads(The Way It Was Before) and, of course, 3 or 4 rockers and everything from between... Some may say that girl-choruses in some songs could've been left out, it's maybe true, but it's a fact that this is the most focused, arranged and produced Chuck Berry record ever, and that makes it interesting. Soon after this record Chuck was thrown in jail for 1 and 1/2 years and after that his concentration was never the same what comes to recording sessions... ..or maybe his last studio-record, the great 1979 "Rock It", comes pretty close, who knows...
Highlight of this record is still a soft rocker "Route 66", I think it's one of Chuck's best ever... There is also a couple of throw away-songs, a silly pop-slower "Little Star" and an uninspired "straight from the sheet"-sounding reading of Little Richard's "Rip It Up"
To everyone interested in different dephts and shades of C.B. this is a good buy!

Great fun!..........2002-05-08
Bob Scobey and friends took time off from some of the more traditional dixieland favorites and jammed on some music not normally heard from a trad/dixie jazz band. They tackle Elvis Presley's "all shook up", and the Everly Brothers "bye, bye blues"...and it swings. This is a foot-tappin', fun CD.
