5 out of 5 stars The Land of Grey and Pink.......2007-05-08

Maybe it could be because I was born in the wrong time, being only 33 years old, this album being a tad older, or maybe being the best kept secret in England's Canterbury district (town), I don't know. But one thing I got to say since I have heard the title song of this album, you don't get sick of it at all and why didn't these guys get as famous or more so than the Pink Floyd. I am a true fan of the singer/bass player Richard Sinclair, very rich and deep with a haunting sound betraying such great songs on this album. Every song on this album deserves recognition:

1 Golf Girl 4/5
2 Winter Wine 4/5
3 Love To Love You 3/5
4 In The Land of Grey and Pink 5/5
5 Nine Feet Underground 5/5
6 I Don't Know Its Name 5/5
Etc.....etc....etc....the rest are part of the original songs on this album with a different take on them.
Each one of these gems have a familar sound to it like you've heard it before in another time and it's a good feel. It is almost like Floyd or any progressive sounding material during this time but better, you even hear a little of Yes in here and even funny enough Rare Earth covering a Temptation song in Nine Feet Underground, near the end of the song. This group is really tight and it shows in their music indeed, too bad I didn't hear of them until recently in my life. And if you like this album, you'll like their other album 'If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You', funny name by the way.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful mix of pop and progressive.......2007-02-07

This 1971 album is easily the most cheery and upbeat record that I have in my collection. It is an excellent example of the pop/prog side of the Canterbury scene (which is actually more diverse than most would make it out to be), is both warm and inviting, and boasts some solid musicianship - in short, this is a fantastic recording that brings me a great deal of enjoyment.

The core musicians on this album comprise what I consider to be the definitive Caravan lineup: Richard Sinclair (bass, acoustic guitar, and vocals); Pye Hastings (electric/acoustic guitars; vocals): David Sinclair (Hammond organ; mellotron; backing vocal harmonies); and Richard Coughlan (drums and percussion). Joining the band are Jimmy Hastings (flute, tenor saxophone; and piccolo); and David Grinstead (cannon, bell, and "wind"). All of the guys are good players although I have to say that Richard Sinclair is the best: his bass work with Caravan, Hatfield and the North, and Camel is excellent. Richard also has a great singing voice, as does Pye Hastings and their vocal approach works very well with the material.

I think that of all of the Canterbury bands (and other English progressive bands active at the time), Caravan stuck closer to the "pop song" format. Because of this, you will neither encounter the use of staggeringly complex time signatures, nor odd chords and root movements. Instead, the pieces on In the Land of Grey and Pink feature very pleasant melodies, and are mostly mid-tempo, without any jarring or experimental passages. There is also the classic Canterbury sense of humor, as evidenced by song titles such as Golf Girl and "Hold Grandad by the Nose". Most of the tracks on the album are in the 3-8 minute range, with the single exception of the massive 22'40" Nine Feet Underground suite.

This remastered album features the original (and excellent) album art with loads of informative liner notes. The bonus tracks include several tracks that should have been included on the original record (e.g Aristocracy), whereas the remaining bonus tracks are simply alternate takes/versions.

This is a great album lumped under the Canterbury scene and is very highly recommended to folks that do not mind a less technically-oriented approach to prog rock along with the excellent For Girls who Grow Plump in the Night (1973).

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2006-11-22

This album is rightly considered one of the classic albums of the Canterbury progressive rock style which gained considerable popularity in the early 70's. Caravan really hit their stride on this their 3rd album and many consider it to be the band's best. Still with the band's original lineup this album plays to the strengths of the songwriters and musicians. It is a great mix of prog rock, pop, and at times just plain nonsense that works on many levels. The lyrics are very hippie-ish expressing a positive idealism that is rare in today's world. The pop-ish tracks "Golf Girl" "In The Land Of Grey And Pink" and "Love To Love You" are all instantly humable and stick in your brain like good pop should. The proggier stuff "Winter Wine" and the classic album closer "Nine Feet Underground" show a band at the top of their game. "Nine Feet Underground" has become Caravan's "Free Bird" with its 22 minute length and uninhibited jamming it has become an essential part of the Caravan set list to this day. Although the album sounds a bit dated today, it is still a great listen. The remastered version (released in 2001) sounds great and has several bonus tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully unforgettable..........2006-09-08

So, why does an album sound so incredibly fresh & alive well over thirty years after its release? Well, if there was an easy answer everybody would be doing it, but sometimes things just work... and Caravan's masterpiece does just that. First time through its bizarre, often childish lyrics may leave you feeling that you've dropped into a whimsical Edward Lear-esque hippy-fest... but careful because it'll get to you, and once it does you'll be hooked. Why? Well in addition to being infused with catchy melodies, perfectly metered lyrics, excellent playing, clever arrangements, and a highly distinctive feeling of pastoral "Englishness", there's something running through it all that elevates it from an interesting, relatively obscure slice of early 70's folk-jazz-rock into a "classic". Don't ask me what but it's different, unforgettable and above all timeless.

5 out of 5 stars A High Point in Progressive Music.......2006-08-14

Without fluffing this up too much, I just want to state that the reason this album works so well is because of one man: Richard Sinclair. Perhaps I am partial to his music and achievements outside of Caravan, but I can see no other reason why this album has succeeded where many others in the band catalogue have not. The previous two albums in the Caravan discography are nice enough and worth checking out, but they seem to be lacking. The band was fully entrenched in the quirky psychadelic music of the late 60's, but aside from some moments on "If I Could Do it All Over....", there aren't any strong, distinctive elements that set the group apart from its peers.

During the production of this album, "In the Land of Grey and Pink", for whatever reason, Richard Sinclair came into his own as a songwriter. His writing and performances on the album are far from stunning: he's a decent enough singer, can pluck out a few chords on the guitar, but certainly no virtuoso. No, what Sinclair brought to this album was his sense of humor and fun. The whole thing begins with the classic "Golf Girl", a silly and campy song about a man who falls in love with a golf course employee. The melody and chord changes are nothing revolutionary, but again there is a light-heartedness to the song that is instantly appealing, even if the lyrics make little sense.

In my opinion, the best track on the album is "Winter Wine", another Richard Sinclair composition. The song begins with Richard plucking on an acoustic guitar and singing a folk-sy tale of yearning, castles, dragons, and various other fantastical things. The song picks up steam at roughly the 1:00 point, with a strong guitar riff and drum beat. The progression is pretty steady throughout its length, with plenty of jamming on organ & guitar, courtesy of Dave Sinclair (Richard's cousin) and Pye Hastings, respectively. The key to this song is that it is lovely, it also grooves, and it is fun.

Pye provides his sole contribution to the album "Love to Love You", which has a simple but catchy feel to it. The song has its own sense of fun, and the music is strongly appealing, but lacks the absurd humor of the Sinclair tracks previous to it. Coincidentally, the shortest track on the album.

The title track: again, nothing ground-breaking in terms of song writing, but it is good fun and Sinclair sings about all sorts of strange nonsense. The wonderful thing is that the absurdity is never off-setting.

The monster on this recording is "Nine Feet Underground", courtesy of Dave Sinclair. This is among the fan favorite recordings of the band, and it's not hard to see why. Unlike the previous tracks, it has many extended instrumental passages, with plenty of organ playing and grooves from the band. Strangely enough, the song doesn't FEEL as long as it does, and almost places the listener in a trance. The solos are never overly complicated, which is sometimes a fresh change from the million-notes-per-second mentality of other prog groups.

Plenty of bonus tracks here, but I won't get into them (this review is long enough!). My overall feeling about this album is that, although it doesn't have a ground-shattering effect on the music scene, it does present Caravan as a fresh and unique voice in any field of music. Unfortunately Richard Sinclair would leave the band after this album, and Caravan would continue to provide us with catchy, sometimes epic songs with Pye Hastings trademark dry humor and arrangements (see For Girls Who Grow album). This is so much fun, very much a product of its time and almost Brit-centric humor, but a worthy purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Better than I Thought.......2003-01-02

The classic everyone told me it was. I was expecting good but not this good. This is a great prog. album. Only complaint, I would have liked a little more guitar in the instrumental parts, especially on the long song. But with tunes like these, I'll let it pass.

5 out of 5 stars TAKE A CANTERBURY PILGRIMAGE..........2001-06-17

If you've never experienced the innocence and eclecticism that was Caravan, you might as well start with this, their finest album. They did a lot of other nice work, before and after (IF I COULD DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN, FOR GIRLS WHO GROW PLUMP IN THE NIGHT, parts of WATERLOO LILY...), but this cd shows them at their best.

David Sinclair played keyboards -- organ, piano and mellotron -- and did some harmony vocals. His Hammond organ dominated the band's sound, but never in a heavy-handed way, and his mellotron work was groundbreaking. He used the instrument to play leads, not just to invoke swelling string section fills, as most practitioners did. His cousin Richard Sinclair played bass and acoustic guitar and sang most of the leads -- he has a pleasant but distinctive, unquestionably British voice, perfectly suited to their material (he later lent his talents to the shatteringly talented ensemble Hatfield and the North). Pye Hastings played guitar (mostly rhythm and some nice understated lead work -- he was, thankfully, never a posing 'guitar god') and did some of the lead vocals, and Richard Coughlin provided the rhythmic foundation with his tasteful drumming. From time to time, Pye's brother Jimmy Hastings appears on flute and sax, adding to the slightly jazzy feel of their arrangements.

There is humor and whimsy in Caravan's music and lyrics -- but never to the point of making them seem silly. This is intelligently crafted music, but music that will bring a smile to your face --- progressive, thought-provoking and hummable at the same time. This band, and this album in particular, is one of the highlights of the 70s British music scene -- and it has aged well. The album is as enjoyable today as when it was released, in 1971.

4 out of 5 stars Probably Caravan's best work.......2000-12-25

Track five is the one to test whether you will like Caravan -- the extended 'Nine Feet Underground'. New listeners may need to take some time getting used to this folk-tinged, organ-centred rock -- just don't forget that this album was released in April 1971! Caravan never made a better record after this.

5 out of 5 stars Caravan fans: check Richard Sinlcair's "Caravan of Dreams".......2000-08-09

I've already submitted a review of this CD (Caravan's best), which you should find below.

However, if the good people at Amazon allow, this is a short message intended to direct those Caravan fans who already have practically everything to a surprisingly good CD released by Richard Sinclair (the bass player and vocalist of Caravan). The CD is called "Caravan of Dreams", and anyone who loves Caravan should check out this 1992 recording, which R. Sinclair (in the sleeve notes) describes as "an extension to the Canterbury Scene"). It's not a rehash of the old Caravan, but it does recapture a lot of the old Caravan magic.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2000-06-27

Idiosyncrasy. Remember that? The raw virtuosity of King Crimson, the literacy of early Genesis, the sheer emotional intensity of Van der Graaf Generator? (Not to mention the pseudo-artistic but fun pyrotechnics of ELP and the sympathetic but occasionally over-the-top ramblings of Yes!)

Well, there were other bands as well. Equally unique, in many ways equally wonderful, but somehow never as successful or enduring. Gentle Giant's one, and Caravan's another.

Caravan's music is difficult to describe to the newcomer. It's unique. Terms like whimsical, magical and quintessentially British come to mind, but none of those really capture the essence. What does, then?

Well, Pooh. And Alice. And that curiously heroic Hobbit, Bilbo. All those hopeless British traits, melancholy and longing and mild self-deprecation, caught up in one. And beautiful music, sculptured by organ (the old-fashioned kind, Hammond), accentuated by synchronous guitar and interspersed with flute, occasional saxophone and determinedly simple, but often wonderful lyrics. And all of this, spiced, obviously, by a pinch of the era: the early 70's.

That, at least, is what Caravan's like on In the Land Of Grey And Pink. And because of this, Grey and Pink is Caravan's best album by far. They'd already produced the extraordinarily titled If I Could It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You (Caravan was never a group to eschew curious titles!) and that's the next one you'll want to get, if you like Grey And Pink. After that, things unfortunately go downhill, though there's enough to enjoy if, by now, you're Caravanserai'd.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time. I keep returning to it, as the years go by. It's a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Definately a Bloomer.......2005-09-25

I somewhat held the same view as the negative reviews here on my first few listens to this album. I was looking for more single oriented gems that the first album contained being a greedy music consumer. But the true test is time, and I must say I have become more enthralled with this album the more I listen to it. It's just one of those albums that you keep coming back to, there's something about it thats just gripping. It's no doubt a testament to the plethora of genius collaborators and the obvious input of the man James Lavelle. This guy is a testament to the survival of sample/electronic driven artistry and a true standard bearer of the perfect use of sampling to bring out the emotion in so-called synthetic musicianship. One definite thing needs to be stated, the use of vocals and actual instruments on this album are astounding. Yes, it is different from Psyence Fiction, but in this case, though in a completely different place as the first album, it stands alone and is more cohesive than the Shadow collaboration. I recommend this album highly, it stands in its own space apart from PF and triumphs unbelievably.

4 out of 5 stars Psyence Fiction 2? No........2004-11-14

When I first bought Psyence Fiction, I thought it was an excellent album. I just bought this CD earlier today, and was disappointed. Then I sat down and actually listened and found the good in it. You can't approach this album expecting the same beats that DJ Shadow brought in Psyence Fiction. This album brings a different kind of experience to the listener. There is definitely an electronica sound in some of the songs, but it's not exactly bad. "Eye For An Eye" is an excellent song that, to me, stands out from the rest of the album. Never Never Land is mostly an album to sit back and relax to more than anything. I recommend it to those who have a wide variety of musical genres that they enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars garbage.......2004-11-01

i wrote a review for this crappy album for the limited editon already, without paying attention that people were writing all the reviews for the import. and i have to say that i'm truly amazed that so many people actually like this garbage. i think it's really a reflection on how much people don't take music seriously anymore. people will listen to any garbage now-a-days. if any of you were really electronic music lovers, you would know how much this album sucks. but i would guess that most people that gave this cd a good review don't really know anything about electronic music. this shouldn't bother me, but it does. i was really expecting something great in this album. just another letdown in this crappy decade.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2004-10-22

Just tracks 7 and 8 are worth the price of the CD. The rest of disc is just as phenomenal. The disc is full of great atmospheres, the production is great, and it's so nice to hear real instruments melded with the crazy beats. The addition of Richard File brings Unkle to a new level. This duo should stick together and keep making beautiful music. I wish the bonus track 'Awake the Unkind' was on the North American release.

5 out of 5 stars unlike anything from this world.......2004-08-19

UNKLE's second album is unbelievably good. I bought Psyence Fiction on a whim years ago and listened to it endlessly. I lost it somewhere along the way and while looking for it in record stores, I found this album. I was hoping it would be a continuation of PF, and was totally let down. But in a good way. This album goes in a different direction. Its hard to describe it. The best way to describe to me is by saying that its like a soundtrack to an epic movie that hasnt been made yet. There arent alot of albums that you can say that you can truly listen to all the way thru and not get boring or redundant. This is one that you can stick in the cd player (especially while driving at night) and let it roll, because it really is the musical equivalent to a story unfolding, you cant skip something, or youre lost for the rest of the way. All the layers of beat, strings, found sound, vocals come together to create a real environment around you. BUY IT!

Fantastic CD! The oboist with this group continues to astound with each of their releases. I don't personally care for the vocal portions added to LeTombeau, but I wonder what Ravel might have thought? The 2 new members of the quartet really seem to pull their weight (and I really liked the former members!) The new accordionist just dazzles. This CD has something to offer for lovers of all musical flavors.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Lanza in (mostly) top form.......2004-11-28

This is a "twofer" CD, consisting of the 1955 soundtrack to the movie Serenade and the 1956 Cavalcade of Show Tunes album. Before I go any further, however, I should acknowledge that I was one of the liner note writers for this release. But I have no financial interest in the CD, and am simply reviewing it here because to date no one else has commented on it!

Serenade marked Lanza's return to films after an absence of three years, and revealed a voice that had darkened considerably, while still retaining its brilliant upper register. Stylistically, this is also a much-improved artist in many respects from the sometimes-wayward tenor of the early 1950s. Anyone who compares Lanza's superbly operatic renditions here of Amor Ti Vieta, Lamento di Federico, and O Paradiso with his earlier versions (all featured on the CD Mario Lanza Sings Opera Arias and Duets) will immediately detect the new-found control in his singing.

That's not to say that all of the Serenade material is outstanding. Lanza's renditions of Nessun Dorma, O Soave Fanciulla, Di Quella Pira, and the title song are below par, with the tenor uncharacteristically strained in the upper register and rough in his approach. But redeeming everything are the oustanding renditions of the arias mentioned in the previous paragraph, together with Lanza's sensitive singing of Di Rigori Armato from Der Rosenkavalier, a superb Torna a Surriento, and an unsurpassed Dio! Mi Potevi Scagliar from Otello. Lanza also recorded the Act III duet from Otello with Licia Albanese for this film, but time constraints have reduced it to a brief extract here. (The entire duet, however, can be heard on the aforementioned Arias & Duets CD.)

The other album featured here showcases the romantic side of Lanza. Beautifully recorded, Cavalcade includes passionate renditions of Yours is My Heart Alone, Only a Rose, Will You Remember, and other selections from operetta and musical comedy. Although Lanza may indeed be *too* zestful here for some tastes, vocally at least, he is at the height of his powers. The voice is rich and round - gloriously consistent throughout its registers - and the abundance of effortless B flats, Bs, and even a high C reveal a tenor in formidable form.

    Highly recommended.
