Editorial Reviews

Having outgrown their Stray Cats and Green Day phases, the Living End join forces with Midnight Oil and Silverchair producer Nick Launay for an album that firmly establishes them as Australia's Great Rock Hope. Like late, great power-pop revivalists Material Issue (to whom the chorus of "Dirty Man" bears a more than passing resemblance), this Melbourne power trio fully justifies their plundering of past musical forms thanks to enthusiasm, chops, and songwriting talent. From the fist-in-the-air populism of its title track to the anthemic "Silent Victory" (which Launay gives the full Midnight Oil treatment), Roll On signals the Living End's readiness for an international pop overthrow. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Ronson's classic solo debut.......2006-02-09

Slaughter On Tenth Avenue (1974.) The first Mick Ronson solo studio album.

INTRODUCTION:
In the early seventies, the glam rock movement swept across Europe. Among the British artists who made it big in this classic rock age was David Bowie. David Bowie's success was due in great part to the classic 1972 Ziggy Stardust album. That album featured some of the most amazing classic rock guitar playing of all time - thanks to an up-and-coming guitar genius named Mick Ronson. When David Bowie disbanded the Spiders From Mars (his touring band from the Ziggy Stardust era), Ronson went solo. Unfortunately, his career as a solo artist never saw success anywhere near that of the man he once served as a backing musician for. Ronson's first solo album, Slaughter On Tenth Avenue, was recorded in late 1973 and released the following year. Read on, and see how the first solo effort from the ex-Spider measures up!

OVERVIEW:
Mick Ronson released his first solo album, Slaughter On Tenth Avenue, on RCA Records on March 1, 1974. Trevor Bolder, Aynsley Dunbar (later of Journey) and Mike Garson were among the backing musicians used on the album. Ronson himself produced the record. The album tracklist consists of Love Me Tender, Growing Up And I'm Fine, Only After Dark, Music Is Lethal, I'm The One, Pleasure Man/Hey Ma Get Pa, and Slaughter On Tenth Avenue.

REVIEW:
It really is disappointing just how underrated a guy Mick Ronson is. He recorded many excellent albums, both solo albums and albums with other artists, and was unfortunate enough to die at the age of forty-six. But in his fairly short lifetime, Ronson created some of the finest rock and roll the world had ever known. The few people who discover his work (mostly fans of the old Bowie stuff who want to see what he sounded like after) will not deny that it is excellent, and I'm no different. Ronson's first solo outing definitely sounds like Ziggy-era Bowie. Ronson even mimics Bowie's singing style in many places on the record. Now, let's take a look at the tracks that comprise Ronson's solo debut.

-SIDE A-

-Love Me Tender: Starting off the album is a cover of the old tune made famous by Elvis Presley. Ronson's take on the song keeps it true to the original, but he adds his own glam rock spin onto it - he obviously wanted to show off his guitar skills, and does just that. This was an excellent way to start the album.

-Growing Up And I'm Fine: Here we have a melodic, fast-paced piano piece. David Bowie wrote this song, and with Ronson mimicking Bowie's singing style, this could easily be mistaken for a David Bowie performance. The song definitely helps to show of Ronson's musical diversity. Another excellent song.

-Only After Dark: This was Ronson's biggest hit as a solo artist, and appropriately so, since it rules. The song is a hard, mid-paced glam rocker with a catchy beat and memorable lyrics. From start to finish, this one will grab your attention and keep a hold of it all the way through. A Ronson masterpiece more than worthy of its lofty status.

-Music Is Lethal: For this song, the pace and the intensity are slowed down dramatically. This an extremely slow and melodic tune, with some orchestral-style backing instrumentation. As the song progresses, though, Mick begins implementing more and more of his own musical elements into the mix. The end result is another solid addition to the album.

-SIDE B-

-I'm The One: For the most part, this is another one of those slower tunes. But it's got that certain glam rock vibe to it only Ronson could pull off. With its unique stylings from start to finish, this is one song on the album that is truly and uniquely Ronson's own.

-Pleasure Man/Hey Ma Get Pa: As the title of this song may have implied, it is actually a medley of two songs. Pleasure Man is one of those slow-mid paced glam rockers with heavy piano usage. Not surprisingly, Ronson throws his guitar playing into the mix, as well. Hey Ma Get Pa, the latter half of the medley, is the only song ever written by both Bowie and Ronson. This short-lived half of the song is irregular but excellent, featuring heavy electronic instrumentation, and a unique vocal style that sticks with you long after you're done listening to the song. This is a solid medley.

-Slaughter On Tenth Avenue: The title track finishing off the album is a cover of the old Gershwin instrumental favorite. And Mick Ronson takes the classical favorite and makes it sound better than ever. Ronson's classic glam rock sound is awesome here, sounding as good as it ever would. If there's one piece that shows just how talented and how diverse of a guitarist Ronson is, this is the one your looking for. And that, my friends, is how to end an album on a high note.

OVERALL:
Overall, Mick Ronson's first solo album was a glam rock masterpiece! I simply can't believe how underrated this is. I once read that this was "one of the lost albums of the seventies," and after giving it a listen, it's not at all hard to see where that train of thought came from. If you're a fan of David Bowie and you're eager to see where the guitar genius went after that classic period, or maybe you're just looking for some of the finest glam rock money can buy, this album is for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

EDITION NOTES:
Although this album has been out of print for many years, it was recently, at long last, reissued. The reissued version features expanded liner notes, excellently remastered sound, as well as four hard-to-find bonus tracks! This new issue of the album is the definitive version on compact disc. It's tough to come by, but if you want to hear it, get it by any means necessary.

5 out of 5 stars 4 and a half stars.......2005-07-06

I have listened to this album as much as any Bowie album. It is compulsively listenable. "Only After Dark" and "Growing up and I'm Fine" are the best and most Bowie-like tracks. An instrumental section from the title track sounds eerily similar to an early track by the French band Air, making me believe they must know this album well. His version of "Love me tender" grew on me too. If you like early-70s Bowie you really do need this. I haven't heard the bonus tracks.

3 out of 5 stars An important footnote to Aladdin Sane.......2004-08-23

Mick Ronson was Bowie's lead guitarist during his first (and some would say, best) phase. I was never clear about what the relationship was between the two -- from Bowie putting his arm around Ronson on 'Starman' for Top of the Pops to the oral string-plucking of his guitar in concert. But after 'Aladdin Sane', Ronson had left the Bowie line-up. And Bowie's next -- 'Diamond Dogs' -- is generally viewed as much weaker than its predecessors.

'Slaughter on 10th Avenue' was Ronson's first solo album, arriving at some point after 'Aladdin Sane'. A study mate at the time bought the album, and even then, the LP wasn't on his turntable too often. The album is a collection of reasonably attractive songs, and you can immediately hear in Ronson's tone why he was provided such suitable backing vocals for Bowie. And like Bowie's 'Pin Ups' of about the same period, there are some covers: 'Love Me Tender' and 'Slaughter on 10th Avenue'. Unfortunately this re-issue by Snapper contains no songwriting credits (very naughty -- let's hope the lawyers don't find out about that), or indeed any information about who plays what.

The cover art is pretty much as I remember the LP, and there is a 500-word retrospective on Ronson, who died of cancer in 1993. If you're a Bowie completist, you have to have this album, because Bowie is certainly in the mix on some tunes, singing if not also writing.

if you are a die hard Deep Purple fan like some reviewers below and of course like me too! you will love this pearl collection songs of deep purple. The 4 discs are 24 bit remastered songs, some of the unreleased livesongs like stormbringer, wild dogs, lazy, fireball, Highway star are never issued on any cd format before.
Once again, the pearl collection songs are dedicated to "die hard and long time deep purple fans". If you arent! perhaps you know the only one song of DP such as Smoke on the water! then please keep away your fingers from this, because you won?t surely like them all. On the other hand, the most die hard DP fans would like the whole set for sure.
PS: do not forget to see the pretty photos of band members as sleeve in the boxset. You will love it!

much better LIVE SHOW than Stones or beatles!
yes they're rocking more & are louder than Stones or beatles ever did on stage. The boxset has 32 songs as pearl or pots of gold. The line up from the band Mark II, III and IV songs are included in this exclusive set. You will be satisfied with the songs. I quarantee ya all!

3 out of 5 stars Unusual collection of live Deep Purple.......2002-11-20

The liner notes say that this collection is "the story of Deep Purple on the road"...and so it is.Rather than a live greatest hits, this collection attempts to show DP in it's various incarnations(1968-1993), warts and all. Actually, the warts were few for me.The biggest complaint of mine is the apparently random sequencing and selections(just what the heck were they thinking?).This box set would've been better served had The Deep Purple Appreciation Society(who put this set together)taken less control of the packaging. The selection follows no rhyme or reason.Oh well.
Just in case you think these tracks are familiar versions, think again. Most are extended versions with nuances particular to the specific stage show performed at that time."DEEP PURPLE ON THE ROAD" serves as an excellent overview.
Another lesser complaint is the overall length of each cd. Average time= 60 minutes per cd (more or less).
But, all things considered, this is a solid collection with excellent sound. This box also contains a copious amount of liner notes worthy of a small book in itself.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mark II Live on Stage a Great Recording.......1999-09-29

This is a three cd set recorded live at Knebworth in 1985, and Stockholm in 1970. The stuff from 85 sounds like the Nobody's Perfect album, but Gillan sounds 10 times better. Sound quality is great except for a bit of delay and slap back. The material from Stockholm is amazing, an outstanding live recording of Child in Time, when Ian Gillan still had his incredible vocal tone. Highly recommended for the Ian Gillan or Deep Purple fanatic.

5 out of 5 stars Songs that Paint Pictures on the Inside of Your Eyeballs.......2006-08-27

Close your eyes and listen to "Blonde on Blonde." Every song on the album is so jammed with imagery that they paint pictures on the inside of your eyeballs. Though "Blonde on Blonde" was recorded way back before I was even a twinkle in my daddy's eyes, you can still listen to it today and be amazed. From the first note all the way to the end of "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" this is a record so full in imagery, power and raw poetry that it will never cease to stun. Sooner or Later, if you play Bob Dylan records, you're going to have to admit that this is one of his best.

5 out of 5 stars Very Long, but Not Long Enough.......2006-04-02

This record opens with "Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 36" and I can remember driving from LA to TJ with that record on the cassette player. I was riding with three friends and we played that record all the way there. Over and Over listening to that refrain, "Everybody must get stoned." We were college girls out for a good time. We did tequila shooters south of the border, but we were back Stateside by dark, I guess we weren't quite as daring as we thought we were. In the motel in Chula Vista we played the whole album on my portable cassette player. We cried during "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" even though it's probably not a crying song. "Vision of Johanna" is just the best. "I Want You," is a gripping rocker. "Just Like a Woman," is just like this whole record, Just outstanding, superb, really.

5 out of 5 stars I Need More Stars for Blonde on Blonde.......2006-04-02

I own the record, the cassette and the CD of this record. The album was a double gatefold with a startling, good looking picture of Dylan on the cover. From looking at this cover, you get the impression of a young Brando. And like the defiant Brando of those early years, we see a defiant Dylan here, making music his way and damn the critics. This is a rocker, just witness the lead off song. It's also got the long "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" taking up the whole last side on the second disc of the double record. That must have really blown some minds back then. There is dynamite organ work, terrific piano work, knock 'em dead guitar work on this record. Every song is a gem and every song seems to redefine Dylan, a man who has been defined and redefined so many times in his career. Not only is this record one of his best, but it's one of the best records ever made. I know that's been said before, but it's true.

5 out of 5 stars One of the All Time Best Records Ever Made.......2006-04-02

Listening to "Rainy Day Women Nos. 12 & 36" one almost gets the sense of Bob Dylan rolling on the floor laughing as he's singing. You really get the sense that Dylan is feeling pretty good about himself, even though there were many of his fans who were upset with the fact that he'd gone all electric on them. This ain't no folk record, that's for sure, but then again, the last couple weren't folk records either, but they came so close together and the some of the folkies of the day were apparently a little slow in getting the picture. From "Rainy Day Woman" Dylan seques right into the rockin' bluesy "Pledging My Time," which is my favorite song on the record, though I really like rollickin', rockin' "Leopard Skin Pill Box Hat" as well. Oh heck, I like the whole bloody record. What's not to like?

5 out of 5 stars Stuck Inside a Masterpiece.......2006-04-02

This record builds on the excellent "Highway 61 Revisited" enhancing not only Dylan's musical genius, but his mystique as well. What is he here? I mean what did they think of him back then, back when this record came out. Rock and Roll star, sure. Poet, sure. No longer involved in the politics of the day, but involved in so much more. Mr. Jones didn't get it on the last record and he's probably not getting it now. However lots of folks did get it, or thought they got it. I like to think I would've, but I don't know if I understand this record even now, after all this time, but I plan on listening to it over and over till I do finally understand this musical masterpiece, because I know it's important and it is just so very good, so wonderful.

Contains all of Johnny's great hits and covers. Even some Aussie specials like "Got a zack in the back of my pocket"! A 'zack' is slang for a sixpence (about a nickel).

In terms of accomplishment, Johnny Devlin ranked second only to Johnny O'Keefe during the formative years of Australian rock n' roll. A tigerish performer of varied talent, he was a significant force from 1959 well into the mid 60's. As a singer, songwriter, record company A&R man, music publisher, artist manager and booking agent, he greatly assisted the growth of a founding industry.
