Before Backstreet Boys, there was Take That, a brilliant group who paved the way. Remember, without Take That, there would be no Justin Timberlake, and a world without Justin Timberlake is a very sad thing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2007-04-14

Karen Carpenter had a great voice, and here is a big collection of songs from this brother and sister team.To name the best songs from this duo is difficult because there is so many to choose from. But a definite favorite is Top Of The World.I love that tune.
But a song that realy established them was (They Long To Be) Close To You.That song is about their most known song and i love it.There is a great assortment of songs here like We've Only Just Begun.I wont go through all the songs as The Carpenters were consistently good.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEAUTIFUL KAREN LIVES ON FOR ETERNITY............2007-04-12

To review this cd collection is simple - short and sweet it has all the hits plus some added extras and the remastering is pure perfection. It seems that with every new collection that came out Richard tinkered with the orchestration, vocal intensity and the songs over time lost all their essence of beauty and power that was there when first recorded.

These songs are all great due to the wonderful arrangements by Richard, the excellent song selection but foremost the rare vocal ability that Karen possessed. Her voice was always so pure with open, honest emotion and an ever constant tinge of melancholy/sadness. To change this in any way denies us of the gift that is Karen Carpenter. Her voice is one of the best of all times. Perfection cannot be enhanced as those other collections tried to do.

These songs I can guarantee are the original versions remastered perfectly and it is very emotional to hear that voice come out so clear, so pure - the voice of an angel. These are the original songs in their original form as you remember them.

All Carpenter fans - this cd will be a dream come true. Purchase it and Karen will live on for you forever.

5 out of 5 stars Best of What You Remember.......2007-05-07

If you are a fan of the Eagles and can remember the original Miami Vice, this is the collection for you. Best of the sounds of what made the Eagles great and some story-telling like Smuggler's Blues. If you have old vinyl like I do and want to update to a CD or download to an digital player, this is a great way to get the best of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Edgy Eagles member with his best '80s hits.......2005-03-20

I still consider Glenn Frey as the edgy Eagles member--always taking chances with what he sings and performs. This album does a good job covering his 80s period of solo hits. I love The Heat Is On, Smuggler's Blues, True Love, All Nighter, Sexy Girl and others. But my favorite is You Belong to The City--perhaps the most 80s-sounding record, from the lyrics about neon lights to the rumbling keyboards, the dramatic bridges around the 3 minute part of the song and the Miami/South Beach song landscapes that helped spawn the Miami Vice tv show. There are no shades of other decades' influences in this song--this is a very 80s song in the attitude and decadence of that decade. Glenn Frey's best solo record to me. Frey shows shades of R&B in his voice on the rock driven album and he sounds so good at it. Next to Stevie Nicks, he's the next best second act in pop music following a 70s supergroup's huge success.

3 out of 5 stars Solo Collection is better.......2003-09-15

Although the Eagles had disbanded, many of its members went on to solo careers. A popular member of the band to go on to a solo career was Glenn Frey. In the eighties, he shelled out a number of pop-rock masterpieces - now available in a single collection. Read on for my review of Twentieth Century Masters - The Best Of Glenn Frey.

PROS:
-This compilation is exactly what the casual fan will want. Frey's biggest solo hits were You Belong To The City, Smuggler's Blues, and The Heat Is On (written by the one and only Harold Faltermeyer), and they're all here!
-The previously unreleased tracks are good (but don't expect anything revolutionary from them.)
-The compilation doesn't just rely on the hits, there are a number of underrated masterpieces here as well.
-Many of these tracks originally appeared on soundtracks, so it's good to finally have them all in one place.

CONS:
-The tracks aren't all in the original release order (why do hits compilations do this!?)
-The compilation doesn't fill the eighty minutes that can fit onto a single CD.
-Partytown isn't here! What really makes me mad is they had room to fit it on here.
-This is a SOLO COLLECTION and nothing more, so don't buy this expecting to find any Eagles tracks.
-The CD that is actually entitled "Solo Collection" has more tracks.

OVERALL:
Despite a few complaints, this is an excellent hits package. Any fans of eighties pop-rock would be doing themselves a huge favor by picking up this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars The acid test.......2001-05-30

I bought this based on Glenn Frey being a former Eagle, and the fact I liked a few songs, such as Smugglers Blues and Sexy Girl, with the hope that it might have some other good songs maybe in the Eagles vein.

I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of material. There are a number of high quality songs on this album such as The One You Love and Soul Searchin, and You belong to the city. Soul searchin also features some great harmonies reminiscent of The Eagles, but delivered by a female gospel choir.

So far it has passed the acid test, which is that I can listen to the whole album while driving my car without pushing the skip button once. That makes it a quality album in my book.

How does it differ from The Eagles? The production values are as good. The music itself is different, there is more use of different instruments such as the saxophone. I would say it is a little more progressive. The songs are very good. I highly recommend this album.

If you were to find this review helpful, please click yes.

5 out of 5 stars The Heat Is On!.......2000-09-19

Glenn Frey comes flying back with all his old hits. The Heat Is On is one of the best songs on the world. Ever one should buy this album it is great!

4 out of 5 stars Glenn Frey.......2007-05-12

As one of the original Eagles, Glenn steps out on his own to produce an excellent album. If you like the Eagles, this is a good album.

5 out of 5 stars Glen Frey has soul, heart, and musical talent all over........2005-11-09

Frey has put out some great songs inbetween The Eagles work. He has a voice full of soul and heart. This is in a way a very good introduction to Frey`s solo stuff. My favourite all time Frey album is Soul Searching. The title song is also included here. When Glen Frey sings about Soul Searching he realy means it. This is so coool, so soulfull, it realy put you in the right mood. My ultimate Frey song, so to speak. Many of the other hits are on this one like The Heat is on, Smugglers Blues, etc, are also on this collection. This is pure 80 th`s big city, urban, soulfull music. The ultimate music experience when you drive long distances in your car. One of the voices from Eagles wich has soul, heart, musical talent all over. That`s a fact folks. And dont forget The title song from Thelma and Louise Part of Me and Part of You, and then you know what the ultimate track is when you start up youre car on a cold day. This is the lonesome drivers music, and of course others too.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT CD.......2005-07-08

I have really enjoyed this CD by Glenn Frey. All the songs are easy to listen to and I especially like the two that were part of the Miami Vice TV show. It is a definite addition to any CD collection.

4 out of 5 stars If you just want the best of Glenn Frey's solo career..........2005-06-22

...you won't find all of it here. But Frey's "Solo Collection" is a great place for casual fans to get "Smuggler's Blues", "The Heat Is On" and "Part Of Me, Part Of You" (from the 'Thelma & Louise' soundtrack).

Almost all of Frey's top 20 hits are here, alongside three previously unreleased songs, and while "Sexy Girl" has dated pretty badly, most of these numbers hold up very well. And the new songs are actually among the best of the lot.
Don't expect this to be "The Heat Is On" times 16, though; that one was far from Frey's usual style. After the breakup of the Eagles, Glenn Frey turned himself into a smooth AOR singer with a pinch of R&B and quite a lot of soul in his music, writing most of his songs with fellow musician Jack Tempchin.
That partnership resulted in hit singles like "You Belong To The City", the blue-eyed soul of "The One You Love" and the hard-rocking "Smuggler's Blues", as well as numerous other great songs which would have been nice to have on this album.

The Eagles occationally play some of Frey's songs in concert, stuff like the ballads "Lovers' Moon" and "Let's Go Home", and that low-key side of Glenn Frey is not really represented here...but check out his live album, which is simply called "Live", and then, if your're hooked, his four studio albums "No Fun Aloud", "The Allnighter", "Soul Searchin'" and "Strange Weather".
Besides - a CD can only hold so much, and the "Solo Collection" is a very consistent album and a fine introduction to founding Eagle Frey's years out on his own.

4 out of 5 stars Frey's Solo Work is often overlooked.......2005-03-22

I probably am in the minority, but when I look at the legendary Rock band The Eagles, I look at the sum of the parts as exceeding the whole. This is not a negative factor on the Eagles - I do think they are an all-time great band. When I look at the individual solo work, I see some very high quality work that often gets overlooked because The Eagles had achieved such great success. Two of the main components of The Eagles are Don Henley and Glenn Frey. This duo basically made up the nucleus for the band. Following the split of band in the early 1980s, Henley and Frey would embark on solo careers. For the most part, it's Henley's solo career that is in the spotlight. Henley's efforts would be more of an 80s Rock sound - and would often be interspersed with some social commentary (i.e. his song "Dirty Laundry"). In addition, Henley would often bring in many top notch studio musicians to collaborate with him - helping to enhance a powerful nucleus of music that had already written. Frey would take a very different approach - he would bring more of a combination of R&B, Soul, Blues, and even some Folk to his music. Frey didn't bring the big name studio musicians like Henley - but there was no loss of quality. Frey brings an equally impressive portfolio of solo work and this is highlighted on the greatest hits compilation entitled "Glenn Frey - Solo Collection". Perhaps the different approaches to music were why the nucleus of Henley and Frey worked so well with The Eagles.

Glenn Frey has released four main solo albums in his career. These albums are all represented. They are: "No Fun Aloud" ("The One You Love"; "The Allnighter" ("Sexy Girl", "Smuggler's Blues"); "Soul Searchin'" ("True Love", "Soul Searchin'"); and "Strange Weather ("Part of Me, Part of You", "I've Got Mine", "River of Dreams", "Rising Sun", "Brave New World"). There are two songs that Frey did for Soundtrack albums. They are "The Heat is On" (on the "Beverly Hills Cop" soundtrack) and "You Belong to the City" (on the "Miami Vice" soundtrack - this soundtrack also included "Smuggler's Blues as well). It is also worth noting that "Part of Me, Part of You" was on the "Thelma and Louise Soundtrack" Finally, Frey includes four solid new songs: "This Way to Happiness", "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed", "Common Ground", and "Call on Me". One observation is that there is definitely a slant toward Frey's later works. There are five tracks from what was Frey's least successful commercial album "Strange Weather", however I consider that album Frey's best album - so I look at that as a positive (quality over commercial sales). There is an exclusion of many of Frey's early work - most notably missing is the classic Frey tune "Party Town" from "No Fun Aloud".

There is another greatest hits collection by Glenn Frey called "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Glenn Frey". The "Millennium" Collection does include This is a shorter compilation and does include "The Allnighter" and "Love in the 21st Century Tracks". "Millennium" also includes a live version of "The One You Love". Overall, I'd still recommend "Solo Collection" because it does contain the four new tracks as well as some of the focus on the "Strange Weather" material that is often overlooked.

Normally I prefer my Greatest Hits collections to have the tracks arranged in chronological order. This allows me to see how the artist has progressed and evolved over time. "Solo Collection" comes close to this, but slightly misses the mark. The new songs are listed are the first four tracks. It is with the fifth track that the songs start to chronicle chronologically starting with 1982's "The One You Love". It would have definitely been better if the new tracks were at the end. One other quirk is that the new tracks are in reverse chronological order (the first three were recorded in 1994 while the 4th track was recorded in 1993).

The new songs are worth mentioning. They continue much of the trademark blend of music that has been seen throughout Frey's career. The opening track "This Way to Happiness" is interesting - it almost summarizes Frey's sound. While this song has his trademark R&B sound complete with horns, you almost get a sense of Country and Folk with Frey's vocals. "Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed" is a very bluesy song - also featuring the trademark horns. "Common Ground" starts out with a Country/Folk sound, but then evolves into more of a Folk/Rock sound. "Call on Me" was a theme song from a short-lived Television Series that starred Glenn Frey called "South of Sunset". Despite a Bluesy sound, I consider this the weakest of the four tracks.

The popular songs from the mid 80s are on here - "The Heat is On", "Smuggler's Blues", and "You Belong to the City". These songs are often unfairly criticized. While "The Heat is On" was penned by Keith Forsey ("The Breakfast Club") and Harold Faltermeyer (composer of "Axel F"), this song seems tailor-made to Frey's style. "Smuggler's Blues" is one of the most original songs ever - sung from the point of someone involved in the Drug Smuggling trade.

The material from "Strange Weather" is also worth mentioning. You will continue to hear Frey's trademark sound, but this contains some of the best songwriting he did. This represents some of the strongest material by Glenn Frey. I was pleased that the short instrumental intro "Rising Sun" is included as a segue to "Brave New World".

The liner notes list each of the songs and provide musician and production credits. There is a short one-panel write-up by Frey himself. If there was more material from "No Fun Aloud", this would have been the perfect compilation. Still this is the best of his compilations out there. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars I haven't found a better one.......2006-05-26

An exceptionally well-sequenced collection. I usually don't like BEST OF discs that scramble chronology, but the people who put this together did a great job; the different styles of production keep this interesting all the way through. In this context, I can even appreciate his poppy early work. Excellent sound. And it's got most of the songs from "Harold and Maude"! Ignore the cover and GET THIS (used).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION.......2003-05-08

For the die-hard Cat Stevens fan who wants to hear the 'very best of Cat Stevens' I'd say buy every CD he made. For the peripherally interested, this is the album to get, in my opinion. Not only does it contain a large portion of his most favoured period [Tillerman/Teaser] but it also contains a bit from all his periods. This is Cat Stevens in a nutshell. It includes at least one song from every album. My favourites are Moonshadow, Land of freelove adn goodbye and Into white.

5 out of 5 stars Practically Perfect.......2002-03-19

This CD has all of the tracks that you'll ever need, TERRIFIC sound quality, and even a cover that depicts how beautiful, spiritual and dreamy the music is (though listening to the music is still better than looking at some kid doing Yoga). Opt for the import -- it's worth it!

5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2000-11-22

Cat Stevens is another artist I grew up as a teenager. His music speaks to the human soul. I almost forgotten about his contribution "If you want to sing out, sing out" to the film classic "Harold and Maude". It was like reacquainting myself with an old friend. Songs like "Father and Song" and "Morning Has Broken" moves me in a way no other artist can. I consider his version of "Another Saturday Night" far superior to the original by Al Green. Obviously this collection of Cat Stevens songs has four extra tracks that his greatest hits cd doesn't have. For anyone interested in buying a compilation of Cat Stevens songs, this ultimate collection is the way to go.

5 out of 5 stars Songs with feelings.......2000-04-28

For those who don't know his work, this is a great CD with all his major hits, a Collection of songs that reveal all sorts of emotions, from happiness to sorrow. For those who do know his work, this is just another CD with his most famous titles. I already knew his work, but i liked it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome !!!.......2006-08-14

I purchased this for a couple songs and I was suprised about how many I have forgotten about. This is a great selection of songs and collection. Get it if you like any of the Rare Earth songs...

5 out of 5 stars Get Ready!.......2006-06-23

With very little of the Rare Earth catolog in print, Rare Earth "The Collection", is without question the single best compilation available from the first caucasion rock group to be signed to Motown records by Berry Gordy. Rare Earth if only for a short time, delivered the goods that sent them to the top of the charts. Their take on "Get Ready", became a monster hit, originally tracking in at 21 minutes, like many a AOR cut of the late 60's and early 70's, it was trimmed down to the usual 4 minutes for 45 single release. Although you get the edited version on this cd, "Get Ready" remains one of the greatest rock covers of a soul hit to date. In case you forgot, these guys also had a touch of soul as well, as seen in their 1972 hit "I Just Want To Celebrate", which blended rock, soul and psychedelia to perfection. They cover Dave Mason's "Feelin Alright", like every other band of the day, but again, awesome guitar work on this version makes it one of the best takes of this classic ever waxed. If Joe Cocker had not had a hit record with his cover of the song, I would be willing to bet that this Rare Earth cover would have received tons of airplay, making it a hit. "Tobacco Road", is another standout along with "Magic Key" and "I'm Losing You". Lead vocalist and drummer Pete Rivera had a macho texture to his voice that is instantly recognized by anyone who listened to AOR in the early seventies. This compilation offers a generous 18 tracks for an attractive price, making it one of the best buys of classic rock and soul.

This is a CD you don't mind listening to over and over. It is ideal when you have company in the house or when you want to relax.

5 out of 5 stars Five - Perhaps Six Stars!!.......2006-04-05

This collection is worthy of SIX stars! This is the most enjoyable, highest-quality Percy Faith collection I have seen. Not only is the collection about as "Ultimate" as you could desire, it brings back in glorious stereo quality some of my favorite albums. The various tracks from his "Young Lovers" series are utterly fantastic!!

5 out of 5 stars This is it!.......2003-04-01

This is the best compilation of Mr. Faith's orchestrations I have seen yet. Some of the music on this CD I have heard on easy listening radio stations in the 1970s that I have not seen released on CD until this set came out, such as the lush and velvety rendition of Burt Bacharach's tune "Always Something There to Remind Me", with great strings and brass. This is a great set and well worth the money.

Album Description

Born in 1974, British tenor Russell Watson became an opera singer by freak occurrence. While he was regularly singing in bars and clubs in the Manchester and London suburbs, an owner of one such venue told Watson that he thought his voice was better suited for opera and requested that he learn Puccini's 'Nessum Dorma', which he did and promptly added to his set. Watson eventually signed with Decca Records, issuing his debut, entitled The Voice, in April of 2001. Nicknamed 'the People's Tenor', Watson seems poised to convert more than a few opera naysayers as he covers such contemporary compositions as Freddie Mercury's 'Barcelona', in addition to the standards. Includes the 2 bonus tracks 'I Have Nothing' & 'Can't Help Falling In Love'. 2006.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE APP BENCHMARK THAT YOU MUST OWN.......2006-12-24

Spawned from the original ten studio albums, and starting with "The Best Of The Alan Parsons Project" disc in 1983, there have been over twenty-five Alan Parsons Project compilation CD's issued!

From an audio standpoint, there is wide-ranging divergent quality between all those CD's, each being a result of the advance of mastering technology at the point in time it was compiled.

In terms of content, however, with the majority of these compilations being single-disc, they all ultimately failed in an appropriate presentation of a catalog so rich in material.

With the release of this 3CD, 48-track set, "The Dutch Collection", the combination of the best standard-CD audio, along with the most comprehensive representation of the greatness of the Parsons/Woolfson partnership, has finally been achieved. Shy of a complete reissue of the entire catalog in remastered form, which has yet to be done (and hopefully this set is a harbinger of that), The Dutch Collection is the set all APP fans should acquire.

Track-by-track, I have exhaustingly A/B'd the audio in this set against the former best of the "best of's". In the majority of the set, I would declare it the benchmark against all others.

There are a few curious exceptions. I found the mastering of "Sirius/Eye In The Sky" on the now-defunct "Platinum & Gold Collection" to be superior. There also seems to be a few millisecond chop of the first piano chord off "Time" on this set: The piano, complete with intact first chord, is definitely more in the forefront on the "Platinum" disc. And, on "Sooner Or Later", the better audio nod, again, definitely goes to the "P&G" CD.

Other minor notes: The 2002 Japanese K2-mastered "Best Of" single-disc CD has the full versions of "I Robot", "Lucifer" and "La Sagrada Familia", where the long sound-effect intros to all of those tracks have been edited for this set. And, they didn't name it "The Dutch Collection" for nothing: The only English language in the package is the logo on the front!

This set carries combined Sony-BMG/Arista/Sony-Legacy logos. As this set represents the best and most complete audio-restoration work to date of the bulk of the APP catalog (46 of the 92 total studio album tracks), one hopes that in 2007 we will finally see a full re-release of all the APP albums in remastered form. It would also be great to see them in Japanese LP-mini-sleeves with all those amazing Hipgnosis-produced jackets replicated in detail.

Also, the inclusion here of a two-minute unreleased track, "No Answers Only Questions", a simple and stunningly beautiful acoustic guitar/vocal song, makes one wonder what other Parsons/Wooflson gems have never seen the light of day. Extensive non-album material would certainly be the hallmark of any complete APP catalog re-issue program (although I personally could do without the "disco-fied" version of the "Separate Lives [Alternative Mix]", the only other non-album track that appears on this set).

Until the Great Alan Parsons Project Re-Issue Event occurs, however, The Dutch Collection is the standard against which all other APP CD's will be judged against.

It is also the one compilation that no true APP fan should be without.

MAY 2007 UPDATE: The APP catalog is being re-released with re-mastering supervised by AP. So far, "I Robot", "Eye In The Sky", "Vulture Culture" & "Tales Of Mystery & Imagination" have been re-issued. The audio on those discs is the exact same audio on the TDC set.

2007 Remaster/Expanded Editions Release Schedule:

September 2007: Pyramid, The Turn Of A Friendly Card, Stereotomy

December 2007: Eve, Ammonia Avenue, Gaudi

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection for the Alan Parsons Project fan.......2006-11-17

This fan inspired collection of all the best music composed and produces by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson is simply spectacular. The re mastered quality of the CD is stunning. You can hear all the instruments all the voices in the background and it all comes in crystal clear. The new song "no answers, only questions" is a great addition that matches the best of the best of the already released material. The only downer, to me is the new version of "Separate Lives" which seems to be melded with the "Love Boat" theme. I guess it would be a hit at a retro 70's party. However; it still is a hoot to listen to. For those who were disappointed with Alan's solo efforts this is a definitive "Must" for any music collection ( Note: I really love his solos stuff too). Alan Parsons is and will always be the finder of the "Valid Path"

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Stevie Wonder collection.......2004-08-28

It is easy to be confused by Stevie Wonder compilations. In the nineties, a double CD was released in America titled Song review, while a single CD was released in Britain with the same title and artwork. More recently, a single CD was released in America titled Definitive collection, so (conversely) a double CD was released in Britain with the same title and artwork. This British double CD is much better than the earlier American double CD titled Song review, which had fewer tracks and missed out some important songs. Indeed, this is the best compilation of Stevie's music that I've seen. Even on two CD's, it is not possible to include every Stevie Wonder recording worth hearing, but all the big hits in Britain and America are here.

You probably have your own favorites. I particularly like You are the sunshine of my life, For once in my life, Yester-me yester-you yesterday, Living for the city, I just called to say I love you, Sir Duke, A place in the sun, Lately and Happy birthday. Other classics (also excellent) include Superstition, I wish, Isn't she lovely, Ebony and ivory (with Paul McCartney), Never had a dream come true, Uptight and so many others.

If you only want one collection of Stevie Wonder music, this is by far the best. If you want to build a collection of his music, this is a great starting point.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Capture Stevie's Genius on One disc.......2004-07-11

but this set is actually a Solid Overview of One of the Greatest Creative Forces the Music World has Ever Heard.this Set traces His Career from the 60's through the 90's.you see the Diversity in his creative Process.you hear the Musical Growth of His work over time which is the path that leads to Greatness.a Must have especially if you are new to Stevie's Work.

4 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets!.......2003-03-24

The title of this one really says it all: The DEFINITIVE Collection. And since there has been a number of Wonder compilations issued thru the years, that truly is a bold yet worthwile statement. One must accept the fact that there'll probably never be a perfectly flawless disc(s) of this sort featuring Stevie's very best music - that would take more than 2 CD's and, inevitably, always include the dreaded "I Just Called To Say I Love You". So this, honestly, is as good as it'll ever get.

I've wracked my brain since I got this collection earlier this year and can only come up with two songs I find amiss from it; "Until You Come Back To Me" (in my opinion, superior to Aretha's later hit version of it) and the mighty "Superwoman" - three if you count the 1982 Top 5 U.S. hit "That Girl", which isn't very good although it was a big hit. The European origins of this collection might explain That Girl's exclusion from it though.

That said, if you happen to be looking for some of the best Pop/Soul music of the '60s and '70s (before disco and, in Stevie's case, sickenly sentimental smothness came along and ruined everything), a lot of it is right here. Enjoy.
