5 out of 5 stars Soaring.......2005-08-23

Another soaring score from John Barry, whose fantastic music sounds better every time.
This soundtrack is a definite change in his style, and was followed up by Somewhere in Time and Out Of Africa. The three together are the best romantic scores to come out of the 1980's.

5 out of 5 stars Flying over China.......2003-09-09

Does anyone remember "flying over Africa" from Out of Africa?
The flying scenes don't compare, but some may find High Road to Chinas' music soars even beyond. I do? John Barry's early music is his best. His more recent scores use the same style orcestrations showing that he has found a style that he loves and is sticking to it. His music doesn't surprise me any more, I always know when it's him. His older material is his most original and diverse. This one is just beautiful and would easily make any score fans' top 10.

5 out of 5 stars Hauntingly beautiful........2003-07-15

The music from High Road to China, as presented on this CD, is simply outstanding, and is hauntingly beautiful. The music is evocative of scenes and situations in the movie, and I highly recommend buying the movie with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong, which I believe is available only in VHS format. I wish it were available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful piece of work........2001-08-04

The soundtrack is truly magnificent. John Barry captured the beauty of the film and the chemistry between the characters with a piece of music so emotionally stirring it touches the very soul. Mr. Barry, I salute you.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry Touches The Spirit.......2001-03-12

'High Road To China' is yet another lovely and poignant John Barry score to rejoice to or weep to. The music is marvelous, and the sound quality of this CD is excellent. John Barry shows us again in this soundtrack his extraordinary ability to score action and events not for what they appear to be on the screen, but from inside what the characters are feeling, wondering and deciding.

'Somewhere In Time', 'Out of Africa', 'Dances With Wolves' and 'High Road To China' all have that distinctive Barry flavor -- tender, moving, searching, reaching, evoking every deep emotion we've ever chosen to feel, his phrases, changes, harmonies and arrangements touching the essence of the questions we ask about life. And often rearranging our perspective in a way that helps us find better answers...

I admire Barry's courage in saying the same thing over and over -- that life can be successfully lived only through the heart, for living through the heart is the only way we ever learn who we are and why we are here. But he says it a little differently each time, touching new places in one's spirit. Sound intriguing? Buy all four soundtracks and you might find you play them often because his music gently opens your heart.

'High Road To China' is music that lives beautifully on its own. If you are willing to spend some time of your life feeling your feelings and letting the embracing and often haunting music take you where you will, John Barry is your friend.

5 out of 5 stars What the funk!?.......2007-06-14

Great listen-through. Funky to chilled and back again. Great continuity w/o being monotonous. Give a listen and you'll find Jamiroquai's best grooves are the ones that didn't get much air play. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars The Import is worth the extra 20 bucks........2007-02-14

So I had to buy the import with the remixes opposed to just getting the single CD. Its not like I don't have all of Jamiroquai's other 6 cd's but what they don't have are "Deeper Underground", "Runaway", and "Radio", and the Remixes on CD 2 of course. And if you listen closely, some of the songs are a little different than the original CD recordings. "Space Cowboy", for example, is the Video version, which is found on their "High Times" DVD. For all the True Jamiroquai Fans, go out and get the Import and spend the extra money. Its worth it!!!! Love u Jay....

As a previous reviewer has stated, this is JMQ's last bit with Sony. I wish 'em all the luck in the world. They've got to be one of the best bands on the planet! This is a great CD set and if you're a fan, the double CD is a must! JMQ, wherever you go, I will follow!

5 out of 5 stars Funk U Sony, sez J.......2006-10-25

With this double Compact Disc, Jamiroquai will say goodbye to Sony Music for good and move to another label. He already created a label called Long Lost Brother but it collapsed a few years ago. I wish him luck in his endeavours, but let's be honest, without the marketing structure of Sony Music it's going to be hard for him to sell his new material. My advice? Move to Universal Music Group, so he can share the payroll with James Brown, GAP Band and Stevie Wonder.

5 out of 5 stars The Ike & Tina Era.......2006-06-27

This is some great music from a golden era. Funky and Nice!

2 out of 5 stars Horribly dated.......2005-06-24

I like Ike and Tina. Well, I never met them, but I like their music. Great, tough, melodic soul and R&B.
I don't like Phil Spector, though. Never met him either, but just look at his hair...that's an evil man's hair. No, seriously. The Ike Turner-produced tracks here are pretty decent, although not among his best, but the Spector-stuff has been completely and utterly spoiled by overwhelming string arrangements, blaring horns, and the slickest production ever. Absolutely awful, the antithesis of grit (and soul for that matter).
Wall of sound indeed. Smack!

5 out of 5 stars Phil Spector Brings The Best Out Of Ike and Tina.......2002-07-12

I'll be honest. The only reason I like this album is because of Phil Spector's contributions. I happen to think that Tina Turner is somewhat overrated, and I'll also point out that, "River Deep," is the only appearance she makes in my most impressive music collection. This album is Phil Spector's moment of glory. The Wall Of Sound he creates on here sounds as if it's about to explode through the headphones. He went for it all on this one, and although it was a bomb in the US commercially, it stands as one of the most successful pieces of pop art to come out of the 60s (and that's sayin' a lot).

5 out of 5 stars Some unique tracks... not all Spector........2001-12-18

Other reviews will tell you how excellent this album is. I just want everyone to realise that the tracks were produced by Ike Turner, EXCEPT 1, 3, 6, 8 and 10 (produced by Phil Spector). 'Hold On Baby' is a good bit of Turner-Spector frenzy, and has only ever been issued on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Ike & Tina and Spector stereo classic.......2001-11-20

This album is one of the most influential albums of all time and is a highlight of Phil Spector's career. A few of these songs: I Idolize You, A Fool In Love and It's Gonna Work Out Fine were hits when they were signed to the Sue label and the original versions are on the "Proud Mary: The Best of Ike & Tina Turner" compilation on EMI which is THE essential compilation of their hits spanning their entire career but with nothing from this album although that compilation does have an inferior remake of the title song from this album. The title track of course is the most essential track of the album but the rest of the album is as well produced as this album. I actually have another CD pressing of this album that features this album in stereo plus "Sonny Charles & The Checkmates, Ltd.'s "Love Is All We Have To Give" on CD in stereo, featuring "Black Pearl" as a Spanish import The Sonny Charles album is not available on CD otherwise. As mentioned in another review, all songs from this album that are on the Back To Mono boxed set are in mono, the stereo versions are great while I'll add that another mono copy of the title song is on Tina's "Simply The Best" compilation from 1989 on Capitol with her 1980's comeback hits.

Original London Cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beware; Excerpts.......2006-12-05

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.

4 out of 5 stars THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17

Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.

Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.

Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.

In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.

The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.

For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.

So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17

This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07

I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.

2 out of 5 stars MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11

THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.

*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15

THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

4 out of 5 stars Gonna to be a rock star.......2006-06-08

I owned Go for Broke first and this is not a carbon copy. Real talent does not rip off or re-hash existing sounds, riffs, melodies, and such. The variety of the sounds we get on this second album tells me that this guy's got some talent..

First of all this is more a 2k rock album and there seems to be less hip hop. GFB leaned heavily on a hip hop lyric delivery and had a more of a hip-hop theme to it. Kazzer's delivery here has a bit more "in your face" and the guitar riffs feel heaver, more pronounced, and tighter. There are some good guitar solos that are not on his first album.

Kazzer's vocal delivery is also more in line with what we're hearing on the radio today without the sticky sweet commercialism and without the ranting drone.

Most of the tracks are solid rock tunes. The ballads (if you can call them ballads) have a unique grooving quality that keeps them crossing over to cliche'.

You can tell this is a second album on a few of fronts. It's more polished, a bit tighter, certainly more mainstream (or maybe less cross over). If he keeps it up, and has a good promoter, he will no doubt see greater commercial success.

5 out of 5 stars Why hasn't anybody heard of this guy yet?.......2005-11-29

I've been watching the Speed channel's Sports Car Revolution for a few seasons, always loved their theme songs, "Fueled by Adrenaline" and "Pedal to the Metal" but just recently realized that Kazzer was not only a co-host on the show, but he is a rock star. I decided to take a chance on this one and I'm glad I did. Good stuff. So good that I immediatley bought his debut CD "Going for Broke" as well, though I'm slightly dissapointed with that one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for bassists, especially Jamerson appreciators.......2006-11-01

Unfortunately the Ridin' High part of this CD has sub par sound quality and the bass lines in particular tend to be hard to hear - definitely improved with aggressive use of bass tone control if you have it. For me the high point of Ridin' High is To Sir With Love with a memorable counterpoint bass part.

Now to Sugar n' Spice - the best original Motown album I've yet heard. The sound quality, songs, arrangements, playing and singing is wonderful in its variety and sophisticated funkiness. I also agree with a previous reviewer - the bonus track I Can't Dance to that Music You're Playing is excellent.

Bottom Lines:

1. If you love LOW, buy this CD and feast on the (often extraordinary) bass lines.

2. If you love Motown buy it for the wonderful music on Sugar'n'Spice, (to me the strongest album under the Martha & the Vandellas name). The good songs on Ridin' High are a bonus.

5 out of 5 stars Two late sixties albums.......2003-08-17

By the time these albums were recorded in the late sixties, line-up changes were beginning to take their toll. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of good music here.

The first album, Riding high, featured Martha Reeves, Rosayln Ashford and Lois Reeves. Lois was new to the group, having just replaced Betty Kelley. The two biggest American hits were Honey chile (just missed the top ten) and Love bug leave my heart (top thirty). O promise to wait my love and We've got honey love were minor American hits. In the UK, none of those charted, but a remix of Forget me not just missed the top ten. Riding high also features fine covers of To sir with love (Lulu), I say a little prayer (Aretha Franklin) and Always something there to remind me (Sandie Shaw).

The next album featured yet another line-up change, with Sandra Tilley replacing Rosalyn Ashford. Only one American single was released - Taking my love, which didn't quite make the top 100. No British single was released - indeed, the album was not given a British release until 1970, although it was released in the USA in 1969. The best known song here is probably What now my love, a cover of a song first written and recorded in French by Gilbert Becaud, but which became popular in Britain and America after translation into English. The remaining songs appear to be originals, though I cannot be sure of that.

These are not the strongest two albums that Martha and the Vandellas recorded, but if you enjoy the other three twofers by them in the same series, you should enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars A great surprise!.......2002-08-19

I just received this CD on Friday and have been listening to it all weekend. Most people have given "Ridin High/Sugar & Spice" only mild reviews. "Ridin High" is generously packed with singles (Honey Chile, I Promise to Wait, Love Bug, Honey Love). To me, all of these songs are great! They have a nice sweet and funky feel to them. Also included are some excellent B sides. "Show Me The Way" and "I'm In Love" are both gems. The former is a hard driving dance tune while the latter is a jazzy, finger snapper written by Stevie Wonder. H-D-H's "Leave It in the Hands of Love" is a classic song which could have been a hit. Even the non-Motown covers sound good to me, especially "Say A Little Prayer."

"Sugar & Spice" was the real exciting surprise. Besides the single release, "Taking My Love", I had not heard any of the other selections. To me, this is a nice collection of songs from a variety of sources (HDH, Sylvia Moy, Deke Richards, Ashford & Simpson). From the great uptempo numbers (I'm A Winner, Shoe Leather Expressway, Heartless) to the ballads (the beautiful "You're the Loser Now" and the superb album closer "I Hope You Have Better Luck that I Did"), Martha Reeves really displays her vocal talents. I think she sounds just great on the standard "What Now My Love". Every song has something to offer, even the lesser numbers ("I Love the Man" & "Soul Appeal"). The single "Taking My Love" is a pleasant soul/pop number that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Supremes album. Also, the nicely arranged "Loneliness Is A Lonely Feeling" is a treat and should have been a single.

This CD also includes some bonus tracks including the excellent "I Can't Dance to that Music You're Playing" which was never included on a album until "Live Wire-The Singles".

Even though I already have the "Live Wire-Singles" collection, which contains many of the same singles as "Ridin High", I am still glad I have "Ridin High/Sugar & Spice." The singles especially have a nicer sound quality than they do on "Live Wire", probably due to better re-mastering. Also, "Live Wire" left off some classic B-sides ("I'm In Love" & "Without You") which I have been trying to find for years and finally have them on "Ridin High".

Anyway, I guess I'm in the minority with these two albums as I find them to be enjoyable listening experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Ridin' High, A New Low.......2002-06-21

"Ridin' High" came after Motown released a Martha and the Vandellas Live album which, incredibly, had totally different performances on side A of the mono issue and side A of the stereo issue and was so badly miked it's incredible it was even released. "Ridin' High' was an attempt to move the Vandellas to a new, more sophisticated level, and Martha was given the opportunity to record important material from outside the Motown library, along with the usual tracks-that-didn't-make-single-status. The results are mixed as usual--you sort of get a real album and sort of don't--but throughout Martha sings her heart out. The hit singles here are terrific--Richard Morris proved a most sympatico producer who made records that didn't sound like typical Motown. The album did very well, and definitely benefitted from the attractive, non=-girl group cover. Everyone waiting for a great followup had to be disappointed when "Sugar and Spice" emerged. The cover was clever, though the girls were back in evening-gowned group uniform, but the album was strictly a random collection of sides not good enough for single release, with nothing on the album relating to anything else and one of Motown's strangest songs, "Shoe Leather Expressway" included (a song about walking as compared to driving--huh?). The single "Taking My Love and Leaving Me" was strictly B-side stuff, though as usual Martha makes the song sound miles above its true worth. This all was recorded over the period of several years and sounds totally aimless, with no sugar OR spice. What make it worthwile, as always, is Martha. She can take the most routine or lame lyric, toss it up in the air, and make it come down convincing and riveting. What a talent!

4 out of 5 stars A great song!.......2002-09-15

I hated City High's first single, it annoyed me. When they released "Caramel", I fell in love with it. It's a rocking song! I love the remix, and adding Eve onto the track was a brill decision. I love every format on the single but my fave is the LP version. I like the album tidbits and the video, it's really cool. If you have doubts about this song, banish them now! This song is great! :D Buy it now.

5 out of 5 stars Some people just dont understand Afroman.......2004-12-23

First i would like to say that every song ive ever heard from afroman is seriously amazing. I swear this is exactly what hip hop and the rap game needs. His lyrics and flow are really good, his beats are soo tight. He has his own unique style thats irresistable. Everyone should pick up a copy of this cd and all of his others.Afroman is down to earth and talks about real stuff and also loves talking about having a good time with his homies smoking weed and getting drunk. He is really funny too. He's not all about smoking weed and he dosnt talk about it to be cool. Just have an openmind and please listen, just because he isnt a mainstream rapper like 50 cent dosnt mean he isnt good. Everytime i listen to one of his cd's it automatically puts me in a good mood. I reccommend to get all of cds, you will NOT be dissapointed. Albums: 1.Sell your dope 2.The Good Times 3.Afroholic - The even better times 4.4ro:20
He also has a new cd with his group :The Hungry Hustlers - Starvation is Motivation. And he has a christmas album Afroman - Jobells which is really funny

Thanx4reading!

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2002-07-07

... Funny doesn't begin to describe it. It is a totally relaxing song and you can even get an anti-drug message from it if you choose to (although I can't really say that I took it that way). Listen to it, buy it and enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Because he IS high!.......2002-03-27

"Because I Got High" was probably the dumbest song of 2001...the lyrics sound like something that an eight-year-old would write. Yes, I know it was meant to be funny but it's really not. Getting "high" on drugs is not something to joke around about--EVER. It's a serious matter. It's not as though Afroman has had any other singles out since last summer...kind of like another one-hit wonder. Afroman is an okay rapper, but I wish he'd write more intelligent songs...something that people could take him seriously by. Plus, they played this on the radio so much that it's gotten very annoying! All Afroman raps about on his album, 'The Good Times', are drugs, drinking, sex, and violence. A very crude album and song. For anyone who's got even half of a brain, this cd is NOT recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Find Some love in the light, baby.......2002-01-06

I love this album, Ian has created his own personal masterpiece!
Being a huge Cult fan and a lover of Ian's voice..I knew this had to be mine. ;)
Tracks like "It's Over" & El Che/Wild Like a Horse are quite revealing & thought provoking. Kick it out w/ High Time Amplifier & Tyger, definitely shook my bum to these! This is a very tasty example of electronica at its best!
(I gave this 4 stars only because I want Ian to out-do this one! Always room for improvement, eh?)

5 out of 5 stars Ian rocks techno!.......2000-06-21

This first single off Ian's debut solo album, Spirit/Light/Speed rocks! Ian has always been interested in electronica/techno and has paved a style of his own. 'High-Time Amplifier' is an edgy, rockin' techno song that makes you want to boogie-out! The flip side, "Tyger" is a great, mellow, slow song that makes you want to dim the lights and get close to a loved one...
