After their wild experimental streak of the past decade, Wilco's sixth studio album might feel like a bit of a comedown. Sky Blue Sky is mellow, moody, and uncharacteristically monotone, opening with a pleasant jangle and Jeff Tweedy singing a simple song: "Maybe the sun will shine today, the clouds will blow away." He doesn't even follow it up with a barbed punchline. Could it be that the restless Chicago band has settled back into its gentle Americana roots--or does this sudden mid-career reappraisal represent Wilco's gutsiest move yet? Mostly written in the studio by the full band, it's certainly the group's most cohesive album in ages, presenting a dense song cycle padded with intricate guitar work, brushed rhythms, and '70s soft-rock accents. In places it sounds like Wings ("Hate It Here"), in others Harry Nilsson ("Walken"), and in the middle it goes a bit Grateful Dead ("Shake It Off"). At the same time, there's a distinct sense of hearing a band finally at ease in its own skin. This is one of my absolute fave bands--This is disappointing for me even after 5 or 6 run throughs..Tweedy whines on and on about love lost on virtually every song...the most sophomoric he has ever sounded, with ocassional nice little lyrical parts (not as clever or as important as previous three records--I mean he sings about doing laundry for Christs sake, c'mon man) and some guitar parts which he relies too heavily on..it remainds me of Beck's Sea Change which he came back from thankfully and Neil Young's Tonights the Night (although Neil relied a lot on Lofgren's guitar, at least the angst was not a handcuffing factor for every track). Some good stuff on here, but get over the broken heart thing on every track man. Not nearly as pretty as previous "girl" tracks.. I look forward more inspired things from Tweedyco next time.

I listen to this CD every day and will for a LONG time to come! I love all Wilco records, but I have a special place in my heart for this one, for reasons I cannot divulge, but I have a good reason.

I love the title track, Jeff's voice is better than it's ever been, and it's an emotional record, full of just downright beautiful music. Also, for the fan who wants "rock", you've got Walken, Impossible Germany, Shake it Off, what more could you want? If you've never seen Wilco live, you must, a completed rewarding experience!

You won't hear a lot of the noise that was on the last two Wilco CD's, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or A Ghost is Born (both equally excellent records), this new one is quieter, but the lyrics and musicship are first rate. Wilco is the BEST american band today!! Highly recommended!

this ablum is difficult. why the change to dullness? Basically, I feel like I'm back in my parents house listening to America or the Eagles or Lightfoot on 8-track. I'm sad. This album is sad. I'm sorry. I so like to idea of siding with the seeds, though. Maybe next time. Wooahis me.

Wilco onc again delivers an all around solid album! I definatly recommend it for any diehard Wilco fan or anyone looking for get into Wilco for the first time!

I don't know what else there is to say about this album except that it's simply incredible. This is Wilco at it's finest form, and together they have created a flawless piece of work. The songwriting is strong as usual, the band is very tight (having recording the album live-in-the-studio with few overdubs), the production is great, and even the packaging and presentation are well done. There is not one thing that I would change.
That being said, I want to comment on any other reviewers who might call this album "dull," "boring," "a step back," or "uninspired." Sure this is more like the Wilco of old and lacks the experimental sounds prevalent on "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" and "A Ghost is Born," but the result is equally awe-inspiring and worthy of praise. I love both of those albums, but Wilco has managed to strip down the layers of sound to reveal the core of their talent. Only Wilco can do so much and say so much in one song. You can hear everything going on musically, and can sense Jeff Tweedy's thought process. Wilco is growing up. They are not trying to appeal to the trendy or "indie" crowd that popularized their most recent two albums. They are just doing what they do best, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

If you have a few extra bucks, make sure you buy the Deluxe edition with the DVD. It's worth the price of the album alone.

New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow." Her follow-up, Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." A Sound All Her Own !.......2007-07-06

Oh, Wow! This is a cd that will be liked by all who enjoy M E H D I, C E L T IC or even Loreena Mckinnett. It is the very essence of good new age. So tranquil, yet so spirited, this cd is a refreshing break from my well-worn collection, I just keep wanting to listen to it over and over again. I am amazed! It reminds me somewhat of Celtic Women, but still very unique. This is music to the soul. Absolutely relaxing, as well.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: M E H D I ~ Instrumental Paradise Volume 8..A True Gem.

Mood Music, some good, some bad.......2007-06-27

Enya's music is spacey with airy singing. Much of it is genuinely moving and touches emotions, but other tunes make the listener almost want to die. Definitely mood music. Good songs:

Paint the Sky with Stars - not a good song. I mention it as illustrative of my above comment. This is a real downer. Don't listen to it if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts in your life. I'm not just making a bad joke with this comment; it is truly mournful.

Overall the first half is more enjoyable. Album could have 5 stars if it had maintained that pace, but the 2nd half is much more depressing rather than emotive

Album Description

"Sky Blue Sky" has hints of early-seventies Southern California folk-rock sweetness in the harmonies. The album is filled with brash guitar solos that take songs like "You Are My Face" and "Shake It Off" in unexpected directions. The Deluxe Edition includes a bonus DVD, which contains more than 45 minutes of footage of the band performing songs from Sky Blue Sky. The DVD also contains interview segments with all six band members. The film was directed by Christoph Green and Fugazi's Brendan Canty, the creators of the Jeff Tweedy solo concert film, Sunken Treasure: Live in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the acclaimed documentary series, Burn to Shine.

Give yourself time.......2007-06-27

I made a mistake when I listened to this for the first time. I expected it to touch me and move me the way Wilco's previously records have, immediately. There is no way any album can meet that expectation. But its a mistake I, and others, make all the time. Some folks only want a fresh take on what they already know they like. This is not re-gurg rock. Its not YHF. Its not A Ghost is Born. Its Sky Blue Sky.

Here I am one month later and I really love this album. I found everything I want from a Wilco record in Sky Blue Sky. The roller coasters are there, its just not the same ride as before. Nor should it be. The hooks are there where you least expect them. The irritating moments of the first few listens (Shake it Off's tempo or Impossible Germany's verbiage) have long faded. Whats left is satisfying and heartfelt.

Let yourself get lost in it and you too can find exactly what you didn't know you were looking for.

Best CD of the 21st Century. Although it is both lyrically and sonically dense and much can be said for the artistry, it just makes me smile.

Alternative fans will love it, as will fans of folk music. I think rock and country fans will enjoy it quite a bit as well. Metal only fans may want to look elsewhere.

Aimless Wandering.......2007-06-18

The most pointless record of the year.

Jeff Tweedy and his Wilco have managed to make the dullest record of their career with Sky Blue Sky. Its instrumentation is as bland as elevator music, and its lyrics are as infantile as a middle schooler's book of so-called "poems" (and good lord do I wish the preceding were hyperbole).

Since 1999's "Summerteeth," Tweedy has frustrated and befuddled old fans of Uncle Tupelo and his new band's first pair of stellar albums ("A.M." and "Being There") by striking off in new musical directions with every record. This consternation was always tempered, though, by the fact that the directions in which Tweedy took the band were interesting, particularly in the case of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," his first foray into his own brand of "progressive electronica," to suggest a category. But the one adjective that can't be used to describe "Sky Blue Sky" is 'interesting.' This album is interesting's absolute antithesis. Searching for days for the right descriptors for Tweedy's latest effort led this reviewer back to a small stable of terms: "directionless", "uninspired", "pointless", "inoffensive". It is the last of these I've settled on most comfortably. "Sky Blue Sky" is not a terrible album, it's just immensely disappointing. Its songs blend together in a bland soup of sound, Tweedy's vocals sound as though he's moments from slumber, and the instrumentation is derivative at best.

Gone are all the things that once made Wilco a fantastic band to listen to: the enthusiastic energy of "A.M." and "Summerteeth," the sublimity of "Being There" ("the first alt-country masterpiece," as I believe No Depression Magazine put it), the historicity and collaborative spirit of the "Mermaid Avenue" records, and the compelling sonic experimentation of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." With "Sky Blue Sky" Jeff Tweedy and his band achieve the acme of boredom, a greater musical sin than any other I can imagine.

Others have lamented that this record is too much a "regression" to the days of "A.M." and "Being There." If only this were true! Any sensible Wilco fan would regard a genuine return to 1994-98 stylings to be a triumph (who among us would be displeased with more work like "I Must Be High" or "Pick Up The Change" or "Sunken Treasure"?). Sadly, "Sky Blue Sky"--even in its best moments--is the palest imitation of such work. It's flat.

Go back and listen to A.M. instead. Or better yet, pick up Son Volt's new album, "The Search." *There* is an interesting record.

Wilco f**king triumphs.......2007-06-16

I really think the over-simplification that a lot of critics have been spewing forth about this album is just lazy. They just went along with the storyline of Tweedy's current vibe following his recovery as the humble and direct bandleader who 'really wants us to like this record', and how he just wanted to sing some songs for people. So, they write their little reviews about it being 'simple' and 'straightforward' 70s influenced...blah blah blah.

Anyone who has ever actually made a record within the last 10 years though knows how much less musicianship it takes to do 1,000 overdubs and then cut, paste, and edit like a madman in pro-tools to make it sound the way you want than to do it the way Wilco did on this record.

Most records today are of this cut and paste variety, with the producers and engineers often having as much or more to do with the record's final sound than the musicians themselves.

However, I still feel their is something magical about a band playing together in a room, and being able to pull it off 99% live and really capturing the moment, which to me is what rock 'n' roll is truly about. You can see and hear the amount of time and energy the band spent playing together and working out these arrangements...plus the fact that they all play together and don't try to play over each other...it's just a great band of talented, mature musicians. Something very hard to find these days.

To me this is like how the Beatles' "Let It Be" album would have turned out if they were all still working together as a cohesive unit - great rock songs with tons of feeling, played to perfection. Long Live Wilco!!!!

It's impossible to hear Andrea Bocelli singing Perry Como's "It's Impossible" without being overcome by a sense of utter enchantment. As the ripe-hearted have known since 1997's Romanza, though, Bocelli's French-perfume-like appeal generally lingers well beyond a single song, suffusing entire lovestruck evenings with its richness and warmth. And so it goes with Under the Desert Sky. Recorded at a floating concert venue near Las Vegas (thus the title), Bocelli's first CD/DVD combo plays like an elaborate seduction. Cue up the DVD, and the crossover classical tenor, outfitted in black velvet, tortures the besotted with visible sincerity and knockout performances alongside David Foster and the elegant Heather Headley. Spin the CD and the songs come spilling out like elegant reminders of the swoon-worthy live performance. Several of the nine songs on the CD--"Cuando Me Enamoro," "Canzoni Stonate," and "Somos Novios (It's Impossible)" among them--are available on other Bocelli discs, but that shouldn't deter the faithful. For one thing, "Can't Help Falling in Love," a dazzling duet with American Idol's Katherine McPhee, can't be heard elsewhere. For another, outside of a few vintage Julio Iglesias albums, you just won't find this much feeling packed into a single 33-minute disc. It's impossible. --Tammy La Gorce

PLEASE NOTE: One of the CD's in this 2-CD package is a "bad disc" and came to me in this condition - I tried to load it and it shows up as a "bad disc" in my CD Players and spits it out - I need to know how to return it for replacement. I am very disappointed, as I was looking forward to playing Andrea Bocelli's CD's in my new Car !

I really love this CD. I have many of his other recordings but now that he is loosening up and even singing in English once in a while, I appreciate him even more. His voice has mellowed as well. This is really one of his very best.

From The Sky by Ryan Farish.......2006-05-06

This is Ryan Farish's follow up to his "Beautiful" CD.Invigorating and inspiring, the songs on this CD are pensive, meditative and reflective.If, like me, you loved "Beautiful's" infectious good cheer and impossible to resist hooks, you'll not be disappointed with From the Sky.

Farish branches out into Deep Forest-ish territory with third world chant/chorale samples on the opening "The Promise" (set off against his usual piano, snare/high-hat beats, and flowing keyboards).He incorporates these same elements in a few other spots on the album (e.g. the celebratory "Joy").

"Living Water" opens with breathy wood flute samples and also features the first noticeable appearance of acoustic guitar, deep in the mix but easily heard on headphones, and the beats have a more sensuous if not primal urgency, counterpointed by almost blues-jazz piano.

Some songs hone closer to the sound Farish perfected on Beautiful, such as "Home Again" and "Legacy", which is a trippy beat-laden "happy to be alive" kind of tune featuring excellent use of female chorals with piano, beats and lush synths, as well as some funky bass rhythms."Miles Away" is a slower tempo piece that would be ideal accompaniment for a brisk walk along a country lane.

The title track is a slow tempo song but dramatic affair which again uses orchestral strings to greater effect than simply applying a layer of wash of violins."Rejoice", the album closer, starts off sounding like Ray Lynch before veering over into Deep Forest tribal chants set against a percolating backbeat, lilting lively flute samples, and eventually Enigma-esque rhythms, all the while retaining the particular plucked string synth sound.

My favorite song from this CD would have to be the beautiful "Pacific Wind", which features stunning female vocals with a nice piano piece to back it up.

In conclusion, "From The Sky" amply displays Ryan's strong blend of reverbed piano, bubbly beats, expert layering of assorted keyboards and chill-out/electronica effects, as well as production that is flawless in every respect.I highly recommend this CD to all music lovers, trust me, you won't be disappointed with this CD, I know I wasn't........

This is sort of like the bubble gum music of new age. But who cares? Its simple direct melodies, bouncy rhythms and colorful sound just get you hooked. It gets lots of play time in my CD collection.

Simply Beautiful New Age Music.......2005-11-03

You may have heard snippets of Ryan Farish's music if you have ever watched The Weather Channel. His music has been featured on the Weather on the 8's as well as Storm Stories. But his credits are not limited to TV snippets; his music also graces a documentary, and has found its way into the NPR radio stations and featured on CBN's 700 Club.

It was, however, mp3.com that made this artist. He originally released his music on mp3.com, rapidly becoming one of the most downloaded artists on the site. His New Age music is inspiring, providing compositions that explore his melodies fully with a very upbeat and positive inclination.

This CD contains twelve tracks, with no times listed, and it runs about an hour. This is very professionally produced, with string arrangements by John Majkut.

Some highlights include "The Promise" which is reminiscent of Deep Forest, with drums, lovely piano composition, tribal voices and choir. This piece has a lovely upbeat rhythm and a delightful piano melody. A very good opening introduction to this CD.

Also "Home Again" which has a stand out beat, Again, bright, melodic and almost inspirational. "Walk With You" takes an almost Eastern turn, adding flute to accompany the piano with the return of the choir and tribal beat. A nice blending of rhythms and style.

It's easy to see why this CD is #3 on New Age Billboard Chart. The music is always upbeat, even when it takes a time out to contemplate. It is inspirational in feel, and the compositions are worth taking the time to appreciate. As in all New Age music, this CD can be a focal point, or a soundscape for your personal space. A must have for your New Age collection. mafoster

Inspiring!.......2005-11-02

Since his last release, Farish changed residences from the East to the West. The Norfolk, Virginia native moved to Los Angeles late last year, a big change of scenery him and his wife. Farish explained to his fans that he wanted to be on the west coast to pursue a career as a successful music composer and become involved in movie projects. Farish's use of vocal arrangements on the various tracks such as "The Promise" is a refreshing chance of pace from his previous releases. It shows his diverse musical talents. He also uses South African vocal arrangements in the track, "Rejoice!" Listening to this CD gives me extreme pride and joy. Its soothing melodies are uplifting and inspirational. Much like last year's Top 5 Smooth Jazz and More selection "Beautiful", "From the Sky" will be a CD at the top of this year's "best of" list as well. Farish is a talented musician and a future star in the music world.

I would like to have scored four and a half. Very delightful
with more vocals than Beautiful. Ryan seems to be reaching for
something new with this release. In my opinion the best tracks
are the ones that are similar in form to those in his last
disc.

Sometimes Explosions in the Sky start with a whisper and end with a scream, but on "Birth and Death of the Day", they begin with a scream and proceed into a symphonic odyssey that Aaron Copland might have composed if he'd played electric guitar. Like Copland, EITS are cinematic, but with more kinetic drive than any film--except maybe Koyaanisqatsi--could match. Compositions like "It's Natural to Be Afraid" take you on epic journeys that roar like a Harley Davidson one minute and slip into taut contemplation the next, using the slow-tension build that EITS have perfected. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone was produced by John Congleton, who has worked with lo-fi groups like the Roots and the Mountain Goats. That might explain why the album lacks the atmosphere of EITS's monumental The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place and their Friday Night Lights soundtrack. Instead, they rely even more on the arc of their compositions and the integral twin lead guitar lines that never solo but always drive the songs. They can shift from power-chord aggression to the sound of plucked mandolins in an instant. This is progressive rock for people who weren't even born when prog reigned supreme. Explosions in the Sky specializes in sweeping, atmospheric prog/postrock/whatever. Call it constellation pop.

And in "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone," it sounds like they're creating the soundtrack to some epic, arty movie, kicking off with a bang and heading into more contemplative territory later on. Robust instrumentation and complex, swirling melodies keep it from ever getting dull or stagnant, despite no lyrics or vocals.

It opens with a bang -- the blaze of rumbly guitar like a car revving. But then it explodes into a ringing expanse of exquisite, soaring instrumentation that sounds like a post-rock orchestra... and quiets down into a gentle, rippling melody in the middle... only to blaze back into a determined, ringing melody, and sink back into a gentle rattling ballad.

It's an epic song, with more mood changes and more "highs" than most albums ever achieve in their entirety. And it segues seamlessly into the moody "Welcome Ghosts," with its blasts of percussion over a gentle melody, and into a string of other songs -- pretty acoustic balladry with explosive climaxes, gentle melodies that trickle like water.

It ends with both kinds of music: the tightly wound, upward-spiralling "Catastrophe and the Cure." And the finale is as intimate as the opener was epic, with a tinkly piano and dreamlike riffs smoothly lulling listeners right to the end.

Like any good post-rock album, "All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" is just like an exploration sketched out through music -- it has rises and falls, exciting moments, lulling peaceful stretches. If they ever made silent movies again, this would be a brilliant soundtrack for some epic, exquisitely-shot movie.

And it's performed with a robust quality that much post-rock doesn't have, not to mention their variety. Despite the lack of pop rhythms, they stick to melodies that hang around in your mind, and vary between ethereality and expansiveness, gentleness and bombastity.

It's especially impressive, because they use only typical rock'n'roll instrumentation. They have some truly brilliant guitar work, with dreamlike stretches or ringing riffs, and explosive, grimy eruptions off bass. There's some solid, smashing percussion, and a few songs have trickles of gentle piano and keyboard under them.

"All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone" is another solid collection of spacey, epic post-rock, and Explosions in the Sky are only getting better. Definitely a good listen.

EITS don't disappoint.......2007-07-04

Instrumental post-rock has often been accused of being too lightweight and unobtrusive to function as anything but aural wallpaper, and a great deal of what the genre has produced has done little to rebut such an assertion. Explosions in the Sky, however, have (to this point in their career at least) managed to largely avoid such pitfalls, as their three-guitar assault produces lengthy, towering soundscapes that can be relaxing one moment and launch into full-bore sensory overload the next. It may frequently be all pretty and dreamy, but this stuff can still assault your eardrums, frequently building up a mellow atmosphere before rending it in the most dramatic manner possible with a daunting rush of noisy distortion and piercing leads. And while their most recent effort, this year's All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, doesn't mark much of a stylistic departure, at its best (which constitutes much of the album) it does see EITS honing their blend of power and grace to a razor-sharp edge.

This album doesn't take too long to hit its stride, with the opening The Birth and Death of the Day serving as a convincing statement of the band's mission. It starts with a relatively placid period of shoegazerish fuzz and fragile microtonalities, expertly building tension before giving way to a midtemp gallop of explosive riffs that hit the mark with devastating effect. The even-better following track, Welcome, Ghosts, is one of the most stirring and exhilirating compositions in the band's already impressive catalogue, with intricate layers of interwoven guitar lines underlain by a pummeling, martial drum performance from Chris Hransky. Taken together, these first two pieces are easily among the best one-two punches I've heard open an album recently, encapsulating all the incendiary songwriting and fearsomely virtuosic musicianship this band can muster.

From there, though, things do get a bit dicey, at least by EITS's lofty standards. It's Natural to Be Afraid, at over thirteen minutes, is the obligatory epic, and anyone who would expect a song that long to have some gratuitous moments would be correct, at least in this case. Granted, the stretches in the song's later going where all three guitarists lock in for a shimmering, Sonic-Youth-on-Steroids style freakout is worth the wait, but I could've done with a little more muscle-flexing and a little less buildup. Similarly, the piano-accented What Do You Go Home To? is a nice enough tune, but lacking in the dynamic range that makes to many EITS songs so memorable. It's stuck in a sort of in-between zone--too long for an interlude, but without enough meat to function as an independent piece.

Fortunately, Catastrophe and the Cure provides a welcome return to form, shifting in scintillating fashion from hard-driving and intense to, er, even more-hard driving and intense, occasionally hovering in minimalist stasis for a brief interlude before leaping back into the fray, with Hransky once again pushing the song further into the stratosphere with his enthusiastic demolition of his drumkit (just check out that ending). Not so fortunately, So Long, Lonesome, is another temperate, piano-driven mood piece that does provide a decent comedown to the sonic maelstrom that preceded it, but the end result is an album that fades away rather than burning out.

That said, while I would have liked a more exciting ending, it's hard to complain when so much quality material preceded it. Overall, All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone is yet another excellent album from a band that anyone who gets high on music should check out posthaste if they haven't already. Let's just hope to see a little more progression the next time out.

Epic music that whether you're paying attention to it or not, you can still appreciate it. Warning though, sit down, lie down, stare at the ceiling or close your eyes and you will be blown away by the beautiful melodies of explosions in the sky. This is the type of cd that can make one appreciate the simple beauties in life. truly inspiring. Forget the post rock title that has been given to them by those who feel the need to label everything and everyone. Great music. Thanks.

not one of my favorites.......2007-06-16

Explosions in the sky are still better than 95% of the music that's out there but I was rather disappointed by this album after falling in love with their last one.
Unfortunately, none of the tunes were very memorable. I found the second cd (with remixes of the songs by artists like jesu and four tet among others) more engaging.
They're still a band with vast potential and I'm still waiting for their next release but I just wasn't pleased with this one.

All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.......2007-06-07

There was a moment during All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone that truly scared me. It came in the middle of the 13-and-a-half-minute "It's Natural to be Afraid," where two guitars quietly and comfortably meander in three-fourth time. Guitar One picks its way up as though climbing a ladder, while Guitar Two strums a countermelody an octave below. Soon, drums enter with a determined martial gallop as the instruments continue their ascent; there's the illusion of building toward a grand climax, but nothing really happens. There was something so eerily "post-rock"--indeed, something so Explosions in the Sky--about that moment that I thought I saw the death of the entire genre in front of me. At some point, it seems, the evolution of instrumental post-rock simply ceased.

But does a genre or a band need to grow in order to stay vital? It should seem so, since boredom is the enemy for most discerning listeners, but All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone finds the Texas quartet towering so highly above their peers that the lack of progression hardly matters. Six years after first breaking out, Explosions in the Sky remain on the A-list precisely because they haven't strayed from their patented formula, and why should they? In their self-contained universe, evolution doesn't occur over the course of multiple albums; it happens as we listen, and we return to their music because each song presents a drama in miniature, with meditative lows and exultant highs, and because the stories they tell tremble with emotion that never feels feigned or forced.

Finding differences between All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone and the group's previous two outings is tough, but they're there if you care to look. The sonic building blocks are much the same as on The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place--high-pitched, ringing guitars and stately drums with lots of snare--but this is a more tumultuous record, warding off criticism the band may have suffered for supposedly going soft. "The Birth and Death of the Day" sets the scene perfectly, beginning with a skyward scream before settling down and rising again in a march that feels custom-fitted for a film score. As the intensity builds and the band rocks out for the first time, one can easily picture--literally--explosions in the sky. At the same time, there are few outright surprises; while Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever knocked the blocks out from under our feet at any moment, we can see the climaxes on this album coming a mile away. It's a technique that had me yawning initially, then ultimately taking comfort in the familiarity of these lovely, well-spun tales.

So, then, what's it all about? Explosions in the Sky deal in cautious optimism in an era when most rock musicians think that anything optimistic is lame. The pre-Sept. 11 Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die was oblique and destructive; the post-Sept. 11 The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place was blindingly radiant and uplifting--understandable since, in 2003, many of us in America badly needed succor. If All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone has a message, it's that a little faith in humanity isn't going to save the world, but that's no reason to give up. "What Do You Go Home To?" and "Catastrophe and the Cure" begin with impending doom that, by the end, has vanished in favor of harmoniousness and redemption. "It's Natural to be Afraid" lays out its problems before blasting them away in a cloud of heavy, major-key guitar and crashing cymbals. That these "message tracks" are completely free of words testifies to how instrumental music can speak for itself when it's put into just the right hands.

With All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone, I'm now more convinced than ever that the knee-jerk comparison to Godspeed You! Black Emperor isn't going to work anymore. Both bands specialize in tension-and-release instrumental rock, their songs often exceed 10 minutes and they exhibit a grandmother-upsetting range of volumes. But while Godspeed are open detractors of the United States government, there's something unabashedly American about Explosions in the Sky, in a national anthem sort of way. When they were asked to score Friday Night Lights (a film about a Texas high school football team), many fans took it as a slap in the face, believing that setting music to celluloid meant that it couldn't stand alone, but the pairing now makes perfect sense. Like an epic American film, this music sweeps us up with grand gestures and shows us hope amid destruction. We know exactly how it's going to end--the good guys will win and conflicts will be resolved--and that's just fine.

I totally love this album. Tracks such as "Your hand in mine" are really wonderful. In their previous album they sounded like GYBE wannabes but here they have their own voice. This is the kind of music you would want to listen to while driving through a lonely Texas highway late in the night.

good. this is the first explosions in the sky cd i own. i suppose a measure of how much i like them is the fact i will probably buy another. yet nothing about them really grabbed me. fairly a-typical. more melodic than i prefer, a distinct lack of the chaos factor thats so appealing about godspeed you black emperor or early mogwai. but still the peaks of the songs, especially the second track, are pleasing. those of you who found the length of some of mogwai's songs tedious explosions in the sky are less so. i found this meant alot of what did happen seem too condensed but others will be refreshed. the artwork is pretty cool aswell. overall: good. and tag suggestions are stupid

There are plenty of words that come to mind when listening to this CD. Awash, beauty, melancholy, transcendence... the list rolls on. Unfortunately, these aren't exactly words that can be put together to form sentences, just as the songs of Explosions in the Sky can't easily be translated into a review. This album, as a blurb on the cover says, will destroy anyone who has a soul. Anyone who has been in love, has a heart, or has awoken in the morning feeling like things just might end up okay. The melancholy that the album brings also carries with it an intense feeling of hope, especially in the first song, First Breath After Coma. As it crescendos, one can't help but just feel that things will be alright, and there's something to this life, if we can just get it right. And that's what this album seems to be about; destroying anyone with a soul, and leaving them okay.

Other post-WWII Chicago bluesmen are better known, but the work of Elmore James holds up as well as any of theirs. If he never had the technical accomplishment of, say, Earl Hooker, he did have as much depth of emotional expression as Muddy Waters; just listen to the sweetness of "I Need You" or the pain of "It Hurts Me, Too." The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James contains some of the most important work of a man who still reigns as the king of slide guitar; anyone who wears a bottleneck today owes a debt to James. One of the greatest collections ever!!!.......2007-05-05

Elmore James is underrated--period. He was as much of a pioneer and original artist of electric blues as Muddy Waters, yet timing, connections, and probably his health problems seemed to diminish his stature in the blues world in the 1950's and early '60's somewhat, at least compared to Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf. Over time, we have seen his work to be just as influential as Muddy's, and probably more than Wolf's. I admire Muddy Waters and the Wolf and respect their supreme positions as kings of Chicago blues, but I actually enjoy listening to Elmore James more. His singing is second only to Son House in sheer terms of emotional intensity. I love his quivering vocal vibrato that so perfectly fits the beat to "Dust My Broom." And his slide playing is without question some of the most influential music ever. The legendary Duane Allman studied him--need I say more?

This is a perfect CD for those interested in sampling Elmore's music for the first time. Every song is a winner. You won't be disappointed!!

The Sky May Be Crying But Elmore Makes Me Happy.......2007-03-27

If you want a slick full blown stereo recording of Elmore you may be disappointed, but if you are a true blues brother you will appreciate that they have reached back in time for some early Elmore. Dust My Broom - the classic standard of Elmore - has a better sound later and by other artists...but man this is Elmore when Elmore wasn't even hardly known...dig it and appreciate it. The Sun Is Shining and The Sky Is Crying seems to have been covered by everybody. Why, they are true Chicago Electrified Blues Standards. I loved T.V. Mamma because my main man "Big Joe" Turner is backed up by Elmore and that classic distorted slide guitar of his....loved it. Madison Blues has a completely different sound than most of the later covers especially by the white blues bands...the original is the best. Other favorites were I Can't Hold Out, Shake Your Money Maker (man whats blues dude hasn't done this one), and Rollin and Tumblin. Elmore was the 2nd blues man I ever heard..circa 1958 on KATZ a.m. and Dave Dixon is St. Louis, Mo. He was one 1st I ever heard and still is one of the best in my opinion...his slide guitar set the trend for people like Hound Dog Taylor and many others. When he gets that sucker wailing, it puts chills up and down my back. Elmore James is one wailing cat...makes me feel like I am in some smoky, black club back in the late 50s and early 60s enjoying real music when Paul Anka and Annette Funicello were on the white stations singin bubble gum music...buy Elmore and be a BIG FAN just like ole Joliet Jayle the Bluze Brother ... Rock-n-roll, boogie woogie, rollin and tumblin all night long!

Listen as His Early Hits Mature Before Your Ears!.......2006-11-16

If you are a fan of the famous Elmore James hit, "Dust My Broom", you may be mildly disappointed by the version included on the CD, as it is a very early recording. But don't be shaken by this minor observation! The song is - after all - still the great "Dust My Broom"! See the CD titled "Blues Masters - Slide Guitar Classics" for an outstanding version of that same song.

That is NOT to say that this CD is disappionting, by any means! You will be introduced to many of his less-known songs, and you will hear his guitar style, as well as his voice, mature with his later recordings.

One thing that you will walk away with is a stronger sense of the early roots of electric blues, which did not always keep proper time, and was often plagued with poor recording techniques. Nonetheless, Elmore's guitar gets meaner, and his voice gets sweeter over time.

If you're a fan of early blues, if you need to understand Elmore's music from your PERSONAL perspective (rather than reading some music critic's opinion), if you love the eerie, yet powerful, electric slide than this CD is certainly for you.

Slide it into the CD player, dim the lights, and feel the blues!

Why did I give it get 5 stars? For delivering just what it promised; the history of Elmore James.

One of the Greatest.......2006-10-04

Outside of those really knowledgable about blues and some of the classic rockers, Elmore James seems to not be extremely well-known; he's hardly a household name... but HE SHOULD BE! Elmore's slide playing is among the best and most influential ever, but, as another reviewer noted, he is a VERY good, expressive, and passionate singer. Elmore poured every ounce of his soul into every note he played and every note he sang and his passion translates well onto record; as evidenced by this fabulous collection. It is a real tragedy that he passed away so young, as he was truly one of the most talented musicians to ever walk this earth. I'll bet the sky was crying the day that ole Elmore died, if I would've been alive, I probably would have cried too.

Wonderful start as a new band!.......2007-06-27

Back in 1996 I stumbled with this cd in a Cheapo Store in Minneapolis. It was a used cd, and it was cheap (US$2.99), and I liked the cover: I guessed it was either some metallic or psychodelic stuff. What a good surprise was this cd at first hearing. Being as I still am a huge fan of Pink Floyd, I was first taken by the wonderful sonic atmosphere of the long songs, reminding me of such masterworks as Shine on you Crazy Diamond and Animals. But also of The Dark Side of the Moon. However, it was not at all a derivative album of the kind you say inmmediatly things like: "this passage is taken from that particular passage in that famous album". No, absolutely no, Porcupine Tree was already also an original, in spite of owing so much to Pink Floyd. As a reaction to those that insist so much in this issue of "imitation", wouldn't you say that Tool owes a lot to Metallica and King Crimson? However, Tool is a very original band. It is in those terms that I think of Porcupine Tree and this album in particular, that had the virtue of turning me into a faithful fan of Porcupine Tree to this day. Being as it is the first albim in which Steven Wilson made some pieces (not all of them) with a real band, because Porcupine Tree was himself alone before Sky moves sideways, this is an excellent album, a terrific discovery. It still lifts my spirit everytime I listen to it.
No wonder it was so joyful to have a new version of the album with bonus tracks. As you know, the American version was different from the British version, as it used to happen with the Beatles or the Rolling Stones and others.
This remastered version contains essentially what the British version was, plus alternate takes, the most impressive of which is the title track, Sky moves sideways, which has some interesting variations in relation to the original version. As an advantage, this alternate take is not divided in two halves, as it was in the original album, it runs freely as a single piece. I am tempted to say that I like it better than the original!!!
In few words, this is an excellent album for a band that is beginning its career, although it is composed of already veteran musicians. It is progressive rock at its best. I thought, and I continue thinking, that Porcupine Tree is the true succesor of Pink Floyd in current times.

You really need this reissue.......2007-04-09

Contrary to popular belief, In Absentia was not PT's first American release, it was indeed The Sky Moves Sideways on the small C&S label. Back in 1997 I bought the C&S CD, not realizing it wasn't exactly the same as the UK original on the Delerium label. I later found out the British version never had "Stars Die". This ended up on an EP called Moonloop, in which the American version was called Stars Die (not to be confused with the compilation CD currently making the rounds, which only the U.S. version included "Always Never" off Up the Downstair). The British version of The Sky Movies Sideways had a short guitar interlude called "Prepare Yourself", and the two title tracks weren't divided in suites.

For those new to the album, it was originally released in 1995, was their third proper album (they had a couple of early cassettes at the end of the '80s/beginning of the '90s, a lot of it ended on their proper debut album, On the Sunday of Life anyways). Up until this point, it was entirely a Steven Wilson project, and in the middle of recording The Sky Moves Sideways, he assembled a band, with ex-Japan keyboardist Richard Barbieri, bassist Colin Edwin, and drummer Chris Maitland. The title track (both parts) and "Moonloop" were full band interaction, while "Dislocated Day", "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders", and "Prepare Yourself" was all Steven Wilson (drum tracks were drum machines, which got replaced by real drums on the current reissue, which you won't notice much difference).

I have since acquired the Snapper reissue, which I'm ever glad I did (since I never acquired the Delerium original). First disc contains the original British album, but ommitting "Moonloop" (the original LP never had this cut, only the CD, due to time constraint), but with new drummer Gavin Harrison providing drums on "Dislocated Day" and "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders" (which you'll hardly notice the difference if you owned the original). The band wanted this album to be one 50 minute piece, but apparently didn't have enough good ideas to warrant such, so instead, they pull a Wish You Were Here by sandwiching four songs in between (although only three on this reissue, after all, "Moonloop" is now on the bonus disc). The title track is divided in two, which varies from Pink Floyd-like pieces to Ozric-like techno experiments to nice spacy ambient sections. The end part of "The Sky Moves Sideways Phase 2" includes a bunch of themes revisited, plus some played in reverse. The other songs? Well, "Dislocated Day" is a more aggressive number, while "The Moon Touches Your Shoulders" is a nice acoustic piece with some nice Mellotron backdrops. "Prepare Yourself" is a rather atmospheric guitar-oriented piece that pretty much "prepares yourself" for the last piece on the album, the closing title track.

Now for the second disc. First off, you get a 34 minute alternate take of the title track. You get yourself some extra lyrics not found on the version we're all familiar with. Some of the material is arranged differently, plus some familiar sounding stuff. I can see why they didn't make it the full 50 minutes, this version does seem to end without knowing how to end. But I found some of these arrangements superior, while others you can see why it didn't make the cut. Plus I love how Suzanne Barbieri gets to have her voice a second time on this version, which I thought was great! The rest is the complete Moonloop EP. "Stars Die" is exactly the same as the old American version, but you'll quickly learn that "Moonloop" was abridged, and here you get the complete version. I was even more blown away by this full version! Since I have not heard the original Delerium CD, I can't say if there's any difference with that version of "Moonloop" over the EP version.

While many people like to think Porcupine Tree's best starts with Stupid Dream, I prefer the stuff before it, and I really think this is one of their best. This is truly one of the greats from the 90s, as far as I'm concerned.

Very impressive.......2007-03-18

Music is the universal language, but even on the surface it can be something that can help us get pumped up, wind down, or merely let our minds wander.

My fiancé' was always listening to this band but I never paid much attention, since I thought it was some "new band" that wouldn't be around in four years.

I was so wrong, this band's music is phenomenal and they remind me a lot of Pink Floyd's material from the mid seventies. Really blissful, elongated sounds that are a treat of art rock. Very relaxing but also very intelligent music! Some songs really get crazy and shall we say "rock" well, like the song "Dislocated Day" which is one of the shorter songs on the album.

Some of these songs are over 12 minutes long, which remind me of the progressive rock that was again, popular years ago. Sky Moves Sideways is my first album of these guys (well, it is my fiancé's) but I just ordered two more of their albums on Amazon.

Far from the self-absorbed whining of many musicians (some of which I admit I enjoy) Wilson's call sends chills down my spine.

Where In Absentia is the pinnacle of their progressive rock phase, Sky Moves Sideways is the pinnacle of their progressive phase. After this album Porcupine Tree moved into a more song-oriented direction, but this album is one long chain of jam session -esque music, ranging from the spacey flittering of the first 4 minutes, moving into the lyrical swooping drug induced middle section, and finally moving to the pulsing, almost Trance-like middle-end section. The final section leads you back to ambient flickering, and then Dislocated Day slaps you in the face like a jilted lover.

While this album takes some getting used to, it is one of their most unassuming masterpieces. I would recommend later albums before this one, this is not for the new-comer unless you are familiar with this sort of music.

(The Bonus Disc actually has an alternate version of "The Sky Moves Sideways" that is 34 minutes long. The whole album was meant to be one continuous track, but the longest they got to was 34 minutes.)

An excellent early CD.......2006-07-20

Being a new fan who is digging into their back catalog, I rate this as one to get once you have some of their newer releases: Deadwing, In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are all flawless CDs!

After diving into those, go to earlier CDs like this one to see how Steven and the gang got to where they are now!

The remastering is amazing. The digipak is beautiful but I am not a fan of "cardboard" CD cases.

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03

I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.

With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")

I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)

Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28

This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"

"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04

My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.

Now my favorite CD, EVER!.......2006-10-03

After reading Urinetown (never having seen it), I wondered what on earth it sounded like. Most of the book is just lyrics, and I had no idea what they sounded like. When I finally listened to the music, I found an incredibly complex, catchy, and moving CD.

The music isn't so much complex as it is creative and works with the lyrics. Keep in mind this is a comedy, but this comedy does have soaring melodies and very great simulataneous singing moments (I can't remember what that is specifically called, but think of "Tonight Reprise" from West Side Story). These songs not only entertained me, it moved the story along.

My favorite song is "Why Did I Listen to that Man?" as it is the song where everything comes together and reaches the climax (both in story-line and musically). However, I have a soft spot for every Cladwell song (and I haven't found a person yet who doesn't love "Don't Be the Bunny) as well as every song. What's best about this musical is the range of genres (but not so much as one would find in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

The cast is truly talented and can perform these songs. It's a very strong recording for what I feel (after finally getting to see it) is the best contemporary musical to date. Not only will your sides split, but you'll learn something too. Best of all, it's a musical for everyone. Unlike other equally hilarious comedies (*cough*The Producers*cough*), Urinetown never relies on "unappropriate" and "adult" material to deliver laughs, although you will have to get over the "really awful title."
