5 out of 5 stars Soulfully Pleasing!!.......2007-04-03

In this album, Nina Simone touches the soul. Actually all of her albums do, thanks to her unique voice. She keeps things interesting by switching from slow tempo ballads to up-beat funky jams. I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates a strong, sensual and soulful woman = Nina Simone.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential PowerVoice.......2007-02-10

Ten or so years ago, when I lived in wild and wikkit El Lay, I was having drinks with a client at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons (which as we all know, is NOT in Beverly Hills proper, but just across the street on Doheny). As we sat there, my client and I heard a woman (man?) talking just out of eyesight. The voice, while not loud, cut through the pre-cocktail hour buzzle like a small frigate---clean, strong, and distinctive. She wasn't being loud, it was just that that voice...that voice. My client persuaded me to go find out who was speaking, as we were mesmerized. I went into the next little salon off the bar area and saw an elegant black woman talking with an earnest young white man in his first grown-up suit, in his first grown-up A&R job (probably fresh from USC business school). She was talking and he had the most incoherent look on his face. In retrospect, I think he had never met someone like her, and of course, he never will again. I hope he appreciated her. I asked, "Excuse me, but your voice is so distinctive---it sounds very familiar. Do I know you?" She stopped her narrative, languidly looking up at me, extended her hand in a regal but not royal way, and simply said, "I am Nina Simone."

I have to admit that I had heard of her, but couldn't have named one song she'd recorded. Even in the hip 80's and 90's, she was radically underappreciated and heard in the States. Needless to say,(and this was way before amazon.com et al)I raced to Tower and bought several of her recordings. This recording is a favorite, and the more I listen to this amazing singer, the more I wonder why she never had a wider American audience. Her singing, like her speaking, was so very distinctive and mesmerizing. You may not want to, but you cannot help yourself from stopping to listen. I have had more prople ask me "Who's playing?" when one of her songs comes up in the mix.

Her take on any song is memorable. Her voice has a resonant quality unlike the thin, reedy, over-produced songbirds on the charts today. Most modern singers in any genre seem hell-bent on showing off what their voices CAN do. It's like nude scened in a movie: gets your attention, but does nothing to move the plot along. Same with all the vocal melisma of current artists---all the shreiking does nothing to sell the song. With La Nina, it is just pure singing, straight out and true.

Try this album. You may not like it at first. Her voice is unique and requires attentive listening. But like dark chocolate, which might taste bitter at first, somehow seduces you and milk chocolate becomes a little ho-hum. So it is with Nina Simone. You may not want to play her for your next rave, but with friends over for drinks or dinner, Nina playing in the next room, soon everyone will be asking, "Who's playing?" And you can turn on a new audience to an incomparable, unique voice.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD for what it was.......2007-02-08

Nina Simone is someone that put out so many albums, it would not be financially practical to try to collect them all. This compilation CD does show her wearing many different hats through different eras of music. For example, she does some good Blues work on "Do I Move You?" and a good live performance on "Mississippi Goddamn."

Some pieces are more vocal, and others are more piano driven/ instrumental, and that versatility is enjoyable.

For me, this has been a good introduction to Nina Simone and likely all of her that I will need to buy. I believe that this compilation has been sufficiently broad to stand on its own in a CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality CD.......2007-01-11

Since I was not familiar with Nina simone's work, I was very happy to have a good sample of her most popular songs. She has an extremely expressive voice and a truly out of the ordinary range. Her piano playing is also really good. The recording on this disc are clear and well mastered (and I am an audiophile, pretty picky about this kind of things.).
Anyway, when I learned that we lost this disc, and although we did buy some other recordings of her, I reordered it. I wanted to have this particular set of songs from Nina Simone. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Mezmerizing.......2006-03-29

I purchased this CD and its like nothing I have ever heard. Soft soulful sophisticated. Its in a stack of amazing artists in my cd rack next to Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, Melody Gardot, Ray Charles, and Cole Porter.
Just that good!

4 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with the less than good reviews...........2007-05-04

I would like to give this CD 5 stars (lets face it there were so many better records made at the time that are simply classic), but I always remember Wreckless Eric with fond memories. In the late 70's, I found a brown vinyl 10" EP burried in the back of my local record store on Main Street (remember those things?). I discovered Wreckless Eric, finding his vocals and music facinating. I subsequently bought all the vinyl released by him and just recently while filling my new Zune, I decided I had to add him. Eric created a raw, pub room pop that I could just envision at a local pub in seedy inter-city section of England in 1979. I know Wreckless Eric could never have been a top of the charts kind of artist, but for a raw pop sound that is just down right great to listen to, the late Wreckless one is worth spending a couple of bucks.

2 out of 5 stars The most talentless of the "punk/new wave" scene.......2006-12-29

Coupla good songs - the rest is beneath mediocre. Should be a one-star album, but raised a notch based on the label's sense of humor....."greatest stiffs" indeed.

The two good songs on this compilation can be found on much better punk-era various artists collections.

1 out of 5 stars it is easy to see why he never became famous.......2006-08-19

2 okay songs and the rest is garbage.

whole wide world, cherie and the rest

He was famous b/c he was with "Stiff", was one of the first new wave guys, and had a drunk, doofus persona.

This is not an artist for any type of serious consideration.

Tenor saxophonist Richard Elliot was a member of the legendary horn line in Tower of Power, so it's no surprise that funky and soulful grooves empower Metro Blue. From the cascading lines in the opening "Inside Out" to the ethereal balladry of the closing title track, Elliot's playing ties the set together with undeniable personality. Urban and nocturnal in character, the ten songs are infused with a sense of the organic, through those warm and human sax lines. Trumpet and flugelhorn player Rick Braun is also a key member, playing off of, or in tandem with, Elliot. He also co-produced and his keyboard elements add an emotional layer throughout, such as when he utilizes the sound of pizzicato strings on "People Make the World Go Round." --David Greenberger

I was very excited to find a new CD out by Richard Elliot. I'm a huge fan. The first time I saw him was in Omaha, Ne. the night Operation Desert Storm began. I remember thinking, "How can I go to this concert and have fun while our troops are seeing horrors at war?". I did go to the concert though, and my love affair began.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Phlat compilation of Greatest Hits.......2007-01-20

This Greatest Hits Album of Procol Harum has not impressed me. All the songs are there, but are really two-dimensional. Its as if they had been cut from some demo tracts and are devoid of PH's lead ins, background sounds, and depth. I got this album almost principally for their great song Conquistidor and was really dispointed with it - no big horn, no orchestra sound. It may be the band didn't leave great cuts behind after disbanding, but that's pretty hard to believe. You will certainly hear all the greatest hits, but if you are after great sounding album look somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - But a Bit Dated.......2006-01-23

I remember seeing Procol Harum at the Fillmore East when they were at their prime. It was during the height of psychadelia, and they blew the audience away. Their mixture of classical, jazz, and pop, along with lyrics that were beautiful but cryptic were perfect.

The music, at its best, is still great. Unfortunately, some of their later material just doesn't seem to stand the test of time. If I were to do it over, I would probably get their first album, with that wonderful cover, instead of this greatest hits collection. However, this is CD is worth the money and nice selection from a classic rock group.

3 out of 5 stars This is Getting Ridiculous..........2004-04-18

Why can't anyone compile a decent "Best Of" CD for this great band? Well, probably because most of these incompetent "record execs" have been raised on crap music, and don't know enough about Procol Harum to handle the task. The fact that no one seems to be able to put this band's 10 or 12 classic songs onto one disc makes it clear as to why the record biz is in trouble, and it's not from downloading. It's overpricing and bad staffing, pure and simple. The songs that are here are just fine, but this disc is lacking.

4 out of 5 stars slightly disappointing best of.......2002-12-22

there's too much from the first album and not enough from the second, if you're going to have a 19 track anthology, i guess you shouldn't have about half of it come from the first record, as strong a record as it was nonwithstanding. i'd have liked to have seen skip softly my moonbeams, lime street blues, simple sister, grand hotel, and a long gone geek. i guess they couldn't put post 1970 recordings and there is a weird version of one of the very greatest procul harum tracks- the moving, stately, and just plain brilliant QUITE RIGHTLY SO. a whiter shade of pale and a salty dog are wonderful numbers, but this one belongs in the procul harum hierarchy as well. thgis band was one of the very earliest , and best art rock or classical rock bands, though they also delved into r and b type stuff, psychedelia, and much more. this collection is good, but it is incomplete. you'd probably be better off with a different best of, or, if you are a big procul harum fan, you might want to shell out for the 3 cd westside collection, which features many unreleased cuts, b-sides and alternative takes, as well as their first four albums- procul harum, shine on brightly, a salty dog, and home. this was one of the bands from england that , although commercially successful, somehow wound up being quite underrated. gary brooker and matthew fisher were excellent piano and organ players, and brooker's vocals are very effective. the band's lyricist keith reid's dylan influenced lyrics would perhaps be called by some, but i find them interesting, quirky, and distinctive. bassist david knights makes solid contributions, particularly on my aforementioned favorite track quite righly so, and drummer b.j. wilson was also good, in fact, he was jimmy page's original choice for that post in led zeppelin. fisher and wilson also played on joe cocker's debut with other noteworthy english rock players. and robin trower was a talented and intriguing guitarist who later went on to solo success. procul harum's music from the late 60's/early 70's remains interesting , enlightening, and fresh today.

5 out of 5 stars BACK TO THE FUTURE.......2002-12-17

... I thought that anything that was compared, in signifcance, to the Guttenberg Press ought to be worthy of further investigation.

I had been a casual fan of Procol Harum during my youth (the 60's) but I was not overly familiar with their music. Although, I had always felt that their tunes 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' and 'Shine on Brightly' to be, perhaps, two of the finest examples 60's explorative rock. I must admit to never having owned a single disc of theirs. As a matter of fact, I do not believe that until very recently I had ever listened to one of Procol Harum's albums in it's entirety.

... I picked up this disc only to realize just how great a band they were. For the most part, this disc is utterly brilliant from beginning to end musically and lyrically. The scale of the sound, the sheer surrealistic brilliance of the lyrics and the extraordinary depth of emotions therein left be stunned, elated and emotionally electrified. This is, simply, one of the great bands of all time. A stellar example of what popular music can be but seldom is.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine gem.......2007-04-17

Joan Armatrading has been giving us the best of her in all of her songs since 1975..wait.1972.Unbeknownst to me and many others, this album was released in 1972 and only now did I get to exploring it.Discovering the unusual grace of the title track and the poignance in MY FAMILY and GIVE IT A TRY has been a worthwhile journey. The esoteric charm wrapped about VISIONARY MOUNTAINS and the messages of hymns adorned by the basics of piano and guitar such as ALICE and SPEND A LITTLE TIME make this work one of her best.

5 out of 5 stars USED TO BE HARD TO FIND.......2004-10-11

Used to be that this cd was a hard to find classic. It was re-released a couple years ago with 2 extra songs, so it should be readily available in your local record store. I I found this cd years ago and scooped it up and was glad that I did. It is classic Armatrading. On this cd, she co-wrote the songs with a woman named Pam Nestor. Not sure why that partneship ended, because this is some of the most beautiful music I have heard. I love the opener, "my Family". It makes me think of how the 60's and early 70's must have been like, with the attitude that we are all brothers and sisters. I also like "It Could Have Been Better" and "All the Kings Gardens". Check this one out along with "Back to the Night".

4 out of 5 stars a rare and delicate thing.........2004-09-22

...glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks 'It Could Have Been Better' is one of the most beautiful, bittersweet yet virtually unknown songs around. 'Gave It a Try' and 'City Girl' come close too...

5 out of 5 stars Chills.......2003-05-28

I confess I have not been a big Joan Armatrading fan, mostly through ignorance. I have not heard all the contents of this release yet but I felt compelled to comment on one cut in particular that I am familiar with. I have owned this piece for more than 20 years -- as released on a "teaser" anthology of music on behalf of Altec-Lansing (the speaker people) entitled "Odyssey." Included on the disc are Sheryl Dilcher, The Strawbs, Rick Wakeman, Sandy Denny and Quincy Jones. The Armatrading title I refer to is "It Could Have Been Better," which was taken from the Whatever's For Us album. To my mind, not only is this the highlight of the "Odyssey" recording, it may well be the greatest piece of popular music to have never been a major hit. The lush orchestral accompaniment is without peer in contrast to Joan's understated vocal rendition. This piece is so well done it sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. If you haven't had this treat, I urge you to indulge yourself ... if only for this one piece of music.

4 out of 5 stars Early Joan work essential listening.......2003-05-25

'Whatever's For Us' was once a difficult album to find, and is probably why alot of people thought that her career began with 1976's self titled album.

'Whatever's For Us' is simply a stunning album with some beautiful piano playing. Highlights include 'Alice' and 'It Could Have Been Better'. The opening track 'My Family' is the perfect choice, and as the inner sleeve notes suggest, very early Elton John sounding.

The repackaged CD allows us all to truly appreciate the beginning of Joan Armatrading, who in my opinion is underrated in many countries. This CD also includes a bonus single which was also previously hard to find.

If you buy this, then the album "Joan Armatrading", you will really appreciate this fine artist. Two listens of the song "Love and Affection" will cement your thoughts on how great she is.

If there's such a thing as a contemporary Christian music diva, Crystal Lewis is it. Lewis always tailors her formidable vocals for the task--whether it be for an uptempo groove or for a soft and tender ballad. She shines on Beauty for Ashes, a 1996 release that features uplifting anthems such as "People Get Ready... Jesus Is Comin,'" a number one CCM hit, ballads such as "Lion and the Lamb" and "Seasons Change," and the funky groove of "God's Been Good to Me." "Healing Oil," the release's final track, is a pleasing testimonial that showcases the silken vocals of Lewis over a heavily programmed and keyboard-layered aural backdrop. It is no doubt Lewis's graceful mastering of diversity that explains her garnering a 1998 Dove Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars Beauty.......2007-07-09

THis was the first Crystal Lewis album I ever bought and I have been in love with her and her voice ever since! She has this r&b flavor in her voice that is amazing. My favorite tracks on this album are "THe Cross", "People Get Ready" and "Seasons Change." Crystal Lewis is definitly still undiscovered talent in my opinion. Every album I've heard deserves a grammy.

4 out of 5 stars Not Great, but Very Good!.......2007-07-03

Of all her albums this would be my third favorite, behind Fearless (up-tempo) and Holy, Holy, Holy (ballards). This album lets you know she's got a very good voice. Holy, lets you know she's got an amazing voice. Good blend of stlyes on this album from up-tempo to ballards. She has a knack for worship songs that are based in scripture.

5 out of 5 stars Still Crystal's Overall Best Album.......2007-04-03

12 years after this was released, Beauty For Ashes sounds as fresh, original and powerful now as it did when we first heard it.

The soulful, rich voice. The great lyrics. The great composing and arrangements. Songs like the title cut, People Get Ready...Jesus is Coming, and God's Been Good To Me still resonate with believers and always will.

Crystal's done many fine songs and record since then, but this is still her best.

5 out of 5 stars A PRESCIOUS GIFT FROM GOD!!!!!!.......2006-03-30

I am not much into listening to female singers but I heard "PEOPLE GET READY" on K-Love and fell absolutely in love with the song so naturally I had to find out who sang it and then buy it.I am so glad I did .The entire cd is awesome. The music is sooooo different and you can tell Crystal is definately filled with Jesus. She has been blessed with an awesome voice with superb lyrics (especially with the versus taken right from the Bible) and music.Crystals voice is very ryhthemy and bluesy.I was overwhelmed on how well she can sustain notes. She's amazing and very gifted. All the songs are great but another one that is better than most is Healing Oil.Give this cd a try it's wonderful and God inspired .It makes you think.

5 out of 5 stars You can tell she really loves Christ.......2004-08-06

Wow, Crystal Lewis did a great job on this cd. You can tell that she really loves The Lord Jesus .
I remeber listening to Healing oil on a human video and really loving the song before I got this cd. People get ready is a really awesome song also. God bless her.
