    5 out of 5 stars Moravian songs, via Janacek, Godar, Bittova and Skampa.......2006-05-09

    This is a unique recording of Janacek's transcriptions of Moravian folk songs. Originally for piano and voice, they have been transcribed by Slovak composer Vladimir Godar for string quartet and (occasionally) three-voice male chorus. Here they are performed by renowned Czech singer and violinist Iva Bittova, accompanied by the Skampa Quartet and chorus. The effect is not so much of classical liede, but of authentic eastern European "popular" songs - the sonority of the string quartet adds to this in no small part. Janacek would be proud.

    I honestly did not know what I was getting myself into when I bought this CD. I love Janacek, I love folk songs... how could I go wrong? Iva Bittova! I was concerned that she would have a 50yr old woobly voice, but instead what exists is a thin VERY nasal tone... perhaps she should be singing traditional Bulgarian music! The voice is expressive, just ugly.
    The recording quality is not very good, either. On many of the tracks, Iva seems to be muffled and in the background of the recording.
    Really - dont waste your time and money, unless you really would just like to have a recording of over 50 Janacek songs.

    I chose that title to convey the rough power of this great baritone's voice. His sound is quite far from the carefully refined Fisher-Dieskau and may not be to everybody's taste, yet the listener will be moved by the emotion and power which are bound together in this amazing sound. Once you play this CD on your own stereo, you will understand how imperfect the sound samples on this website are. Born November 6, 1911 in the town of Vladikavkaz, Pavel Lisitsian was actually Armenian, not Russian. From 1940-1966 he was a leading baritone with the Bolshoi, famous for roles such as Prince Yeletsky, Eugene Onegin, Amonasaro and Escamillo. When he sets his voice to song literature, we frequently hear the dramatic sound he employed to bring those stage characters to life. This particular collection of songs is a super value, offering a generous amount of wonderful material for a low price. The most famous songs of Tchaikovsky & Racmaninoff are here, vignettes of romantic ecstasy and desolation.

    Sounds like it was done in somebody's basement with only a computer for an "orchestra". One song sounds exactly the same as the next. Obviously, as a "rarities", there are few well known songs here, even to a an R&H geek like myself, but once heard, all are quickly forgotten. Stick to the 5 (and counting?) Ben Bagley recordings of Rodgers and Hart, where they put their heart into the recordings and provide (unlike this set, zero documentation), historical background about the songs and a bit about whey they never saw the light of day.

    I did not do one star, only to keep encouraging people to mine the Great American Songbook for more lost treasures. However, as any prospector would tell you, some times things don't "pan out".
