When people talk about Jakob Dylan these days, they're less likely to refer to his famous father than to his band, the Wallflowers, and their breakthrough album, Bringing Down the Horse. Not only a staggering commercial success, the disc is also a superb example of the folk-rock Jakob's daddy helped pioneer more than 30 years ago. The Wallflowers don't need family relations to command respect.
When the Wallflowers recorded their self-titled album in 1992, most of the band's members were 22 and weren't ready for prime time yet. The songs had flashes of inspiration and promise but didn't really hang together. It took four years for the Wallflowers to release a second album, but this time they were ready. The folk-rock melodies were strong; the playing was clear and muscular, and the production by T-Bone Burnett (friend of the family) framed the lyrics' storytelling imaginatively. Jakob will never escape comparisons to his dad, but his new music can stand on its own as some of the decade's best.
In fact, Jakob's voice doesn't resemble his father's so much as Tom Petty's nasal drawl, and the way Wallflower Rami Jaffee soaks nearly every song in Benmont Tench-like B-3 organ makes the Heartbreaker connection unmistakable. Fortunately, Jakob's evocative songwriting and the Wallflowers' high-energy playing reminds one of the early Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers records rather than the desultory, later work. Heartbreaker Mike Campbell even plays on "6th Avenue Heartache," the first single and a gloriously harmonized lament for the victims of America's meanest streets. "The same white line that was drawn on you," Jakob sings, "was drawn on me." He takes a more defiant, more rocking approach later in the album when he proclaims he's "Laughing Out Loud" in the face of everyone who ever tried to push him around. --Geoffrey Himes

Classic Wallflowers Record; A Must Buy.......2007-06-08
This isn't stunning by any means for this set of boys. Jacob Dylan leads the charge on this surging success of the mid to late nineties era. This album was huge for several years for songs like One Headlight, The Difference, Three Marlenas, and 6th Avenue Heartache (which was actually big several months prior to the release of the album). This, their second album, left enough to be desired...but they have measured up and put complete records out in Red Letter Days and Breach since.
This should not be an album remebered for the later tracks, other than the song Angel On My Bike. I do give the tail end of the record credit for setting up the style, edge, and feeling displayed in future strong songs like Letters From The Wasteland and Here He Comes.
I may be the only one out there in my generation that cares to compare the 2 great Dylan singer/songwriters, but I have my opinion. Here, though, I'd rather not say...because the truth of the matter is that I just don't like Bob Dylan music, and I even think I get it. But now the Wallflowers of Jacob Dylan hit the spot for me, that's all--none of this saying flat out who is better in my opinion, just a what I prefer right now so far, that's it.
They need to put out albums more often then every 3-4 years. I know it must be tough to write 20 songs a year for a record but come on, not really, huh? Oh, well, these guys put out good stuff. Word.

This is a fantastic album!!!
This band is a long way ahead of the rest.
If you only buy one wallflowers album, buy this one!
I would strongly recommend getting all their albums.
Most people would have heard and like one headlight, 6th avenue heartache is just as good, as is 3 marlenas and god don't make lonely girls.
You won't be dissapointed, get it.
Still a timeless, classic collection of music.......2006-08-26
Jakob Dylan is not famous because he is Bob's son. Jakob is famous because this album was a milestone in the music world.
I purchased Bringing Down The Horse after the oft-overlooked first single, "The Difference" was released. Safe to say, I was one of the first people to own this album. I devoured it, even in my young age of 11.
This album was stolen from me around 8 years ago, and I picked up a used copy in a Hastings on a road trip. Even now, this entire album remains one of the main discs in rotation for me. I found that, with each song, I still remembered the words and, all of a sudden, I was 14 again (the year my copy got stolen, it was an album I got all my friends into around that time as well) and bouncing around my room to the poppy tracks, weeping with the sad songs and contemplating with the intensity that I used to analyze these songs with.
The album opens with "One Headlight," one of the more popular singles off of this album, and ends with "I Wish I Felt Nothing," an intense builder that opens into lush auditory landscapes that really paints a picture.
In between the bookends is the REALLY good stuff. Key tracks on this album include the popular-but-still-wonderful-after-all of these-years "Sixth Avenue Heartache," which is a beautiful duet with Adam Duritz on background vox; the slide guitar is amazing in this song; "Bleeders," an upbeat tune with great guitar sound and finally, my favorite: "Three Marlenas," which, yes, was a single, but still an amazing idea and musically flawless.
Dylan's vocals are shaky, not unlike his father, but it only adds character as a key instrument in The Wallflowers. His lyricism more than balances it with just the right mixture of metaphorical and literal meaning.
Sadly, however, this is the first and last great effort from the boys known as the Wallflowers. Five stars, still wonderful to this day. I will forever be in love with Bringing Down The Horse.
agreed, one of the 90's best.......2006-08-16
A long time ago in a galaxy not so far, far away (it was this one, in fact) a good man by the name of Bob Dylan with a terrible voice and marginal guitar abilities came into the music scene. As untalented as he seemed, his exquise song-writing skills made him one of America's biggest figures.
Years later and Bob had a son, Jakob. Jakob Dyland has inherited his dad's songwriting skills, but with the bonuses of a great voice, great guitar skills, and of course, this amazing band.
"Bringing Down the Horse" is one of those albums that just ages well. Bought this back late 1997. I was in eighth grade at the time. Now I'm 22, with a momumental collection of discs, and I still carry this one. Everybody who remembers alternative and what it was really supposed to be like remembers this. it doesn't get much better
Something this great deserves a song breakdown:
1. One Headlight-Wallflowers are best know for this one. I was hooked on this song before I even knew the artist who played. Still am.
2. 6th Avenue Hearthache-featuring Adam Duritz from Counting crows, another one of my favorite bands, this another song they scored big with. Loveit
3. Bleeders-Wonderfull. Love it even more today
4. 3 Marlenas-Another hit. Catchiest tune they do.
5. Difference-This isn't my favorite song but since it hit it so big and because it is the wallflowers, I love it just the same.
6. Invisible City-One of the two more weak pts on the disc. Slow, sort of boring, but tolerable and enjoyable if you are in the right mood.
7.Laughing Out Loud-This is one of my favs, should have been single #5
8. Josephine-The other week pt. See #6
9. God Don't Make Lonley Girls-It's true. He told me himself. He drives a Porche.
10. Angel On My Bike-This one is sweet. Intersting idea.
11. I Wish I Felt Nothing-Best Part Of This Song is the climactic surge of volume at the end. Definately influence from his father here.
Okay? Great, buy it

"And when you wake I will drive you into to town...".......2006-07-28
The Wallflowers massive hit album, Bringing Down the Horse is full of great and beautiful tracks. This album is a true winner, rich and sexy vocals from Jakob Dylan (son of legendary musician Bob Dylan) and honest and soulful lyrics. Standout tracks include: Josephine, 6th Avenue Heartache, Invisible City, One Headlight, Angel on my Bike, I Wish I Felt Nothing, Bleeders, and The Difference. The song Josephine is such a gorgeous song, "Josephine you're so good to me and I know it ain't easy, Josephine you're so sweet you must taste just like sugar and tangerines..." The Difference is a great pop song and still with a rock edge to it, "The only difference that I've seen that you are exactly the same as you used to be..." Of course the megga hit, One Headlight never gets boring or dull, "Man I haven't changed but I know I ain't the same..." Get this incredble album by The Wallflowers, all the songs are catchy and brilliant. I also recommend Red Letter Days by the band as well, enjoy!

Jessie Nelson's poignant tale of a mentally challenged man named Sam (Sean Penn) who recruits a lawyer to help him regain custody of his young daughter leans heavily on the lead character's obsession with Beatles songs, and his innocent trust in their wisdom and emotional truth. It's an artistic gambit that shrewdly lends itself to this mostly rewarding collection of Beatles covers by a wide range of contemporary artists, many of whom no doubt leapt at the chance to record a treasured song by their own musical heroes. The renditions are by and large faithful, and inform the elemental genius of the originals by the strength and variety of the artist's voices alone. The husband-wife team of Aimee Mann and Michael Penn (Sean's brother) can't help but find resonance in "Two of Us," just as Nick Cave's latter-day, heart-on-his-sleeve crooner infatuation makes "Let It Be" all his own. It's the reinterpretations that are riskier. While Paul Westerberg's stripped-down, nasal reading of "Nowhere Man" perceptively underscores Lennon's inherent Dylan fetish and Howie Day turns "Help!" from anxious plea to desperate dirge, Grandaddy smugly alt-rocks the energy right out of "Revolution." The Beatles hardly need anyone to burnish their reputation, but this album goes a long way toward underscoring their most undersung legacy as rock's most transcendent melting pot. -Jerry McCulley

Beatle's lyrics combined with today's musical talent. A great combination! If you love the Beatles, you'll love this CD. I keep ordering "one more", it's taking care of a lot of people on my holiday gift giving list!

Disc of Beatles Covers Offers Lots of Room for Reinterpretation, Some Quite Wonderful.......2006-07-21
I have to admit I have never seen the 2001 movie from which this soundtrack is based, nor do I know the significance of the Beatles music to the characters. However, once I heard Rufus Wainwright's acoustic cover of "Across the Universe", a touching performance that puts his yearning, mournful voice to good use, I was curious what other surprises could be in store on this disc. I later found out the reason these musicians were recruited for the recording was a matter of economics. Producer Andy Gershon wanted to use the original Beatles recordings, but apparently, Michael Jackson, who owned the rights to the Lennon-McCartney catalogue, was charging $300K for each song they recorded. As it turns out, the resulting disc is pretty solid, offering a great variety of reinterpretations of familiar songs - some quite wonderful, others less so but none too painfully.
Husband-and-wife folk rockers Aimee Mann and Michael Penn kick things off with a pleasing version of the optimistic "Two of Us". Pleasing also describes Sarah McLachlan's take on "Blackbird", which is greatly aided by Sean Ashby's delicate strumming. The pace picks up with the Wallflowers' jaunty "I'm Looking Through You" complete with Rami Jaffee's Austin Powers-sounding keyboards and Jackson Browne providing harmony vocals. Eddie Vedder's uniquely scratchy vocal delivery is well served by "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" where he accompanies himself ably on guitar and harmonica. Ben Harper gets into an appropriately psychedelic mood for "Strawberry Fields Forever" with particularly lush strings and fulsome horns, though he gets carried away with the bombastic ending.
Things start to fluctuate at this point in the disc. Sheryl Crow sounds somnambulant and rather constricted on a country-twanged "Mother Nature's Son", a sub-par choice for her slick performing style; and the plaintive Ben Folds barely registers on the too-brief "Golden Slumbers". In the one track that sounds like a Fab Four impersonation (or more accurately, a Beatlemania facsimile), the Vines cover "I'm Only Sleeping" in a comparatively generic manner. The Stereophonics make "Don't Let Me Down" sound like a mid-1970's Rod Stewart pop-rocker, while the Black Crowes put their familiar blues-oriented stamp on the most psychedelic of Beatles songs, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds".
Chocolate Genius, led by Marc Anthony Thompson, refashions John Lennon's touching paean to his mother, "Julia", into a hazy dirge that actually brings a surprising resonance to the song. However, sounding a bit too much like MacLachlan, singer-songwriter Heather Nova lends little distinction to her version of "We Can Work It Out", granted one of the most lightweight songs in the Lennon-McCartney canon. Howie Day effectively slows down "Help!" into an atmospheric, almost halting plea of quiet desperation. Dylan sound-alike Paul Westerberg croaks through "Nowhere Man" with little flair; and in perhaps the biggest departure from the original, the now-defunct indie band Grandaddy turns "Revolution" into a chugging slow-poke rocker. On the final track, Aussie musician Nick Cave lends his recognizably barren style to a somewhat desultory "Let It Be". It's a mixed bag for sure, but what really comes across is the unbeatable craftsmanship and magical yin-and-yang perfection of Lennon and McCartney.
Strawberry Fields Forever!...FIVE STARS PLUS for this music!.......2006-05-09
It will always be incredibly challenging to match the artistic talent that The Beatles possessed. Nevertheless, this set of songs by the artists on this CD is as good as it gets to achieving a proper, respectful tribute to The Beatles with thoughtful and passionate cover songs.
The CD has a whopping 17 tracks for almost an hour of music from the movie (or inspired by the movie) I Am Sam. The music was beautifully woven into the movie; but even with just this CD you'll be blown away! It's a must-have for fans of The Beatles, the artists here, and fans of great rock everywhere.
The CD starts off strong with a rendition of "Two Of Us" by Aimee Mann and Michael Penn. I think their personal relationship helped make them harmonize so well for this song. The Black Crowes do an excellent job with the musical arrangement for "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds;" the drums are first-class! Sheryl Crow injects a great country music accent to "Mother Nature's Son." Sarah McLachlan performs a very sensitive rendition of "Blackbird;" and the CD ends beautifully with one of my very favorite Beatles songs, "Let It Be" performed by Nick Cave with Chaz Jankel on piano. Awesome!
Amazon writes that some of the "reinterpretations (on this album)...are riskier." I don't agree. While risks were taken, you won't know it! For example, Grandaddy does a great job of adding their own spice to "Revolution" and Paul Westerberg's voice was rather pleasing to my ear on "Nowhere Man."
The quality of the sound is excellent; and all of the musical arrangements are very thoughtfully produced. The liner notes come with a few color pictures from the motion picture I Am Sam; and you also get the song credits.
Overall, this CD is the product of an exceptionally talented group of artists who perform a noticeably sensitive suite of covers of great Beatles songs. This album will touch a nerve in you and leave you wondering why they couldn't have recorded even more. The singers expressed even the finest of nuances in the meanings of every word in every song; and I treasure this album as one of my preferred CDs. If this were a vinyl album I would have worn the grooves off of it long ago.
Touching Movie, Beautiful Soundtrack.......2006-04-15
The music on this soundtrack compliments the movie alot. They're deep songs that fall into a deep story of a mentally ill man fighting for his right to care for his daughter. The songs on this CD are all meaningfull. They are all based off of Beatles songs. This album is 100% worth buying along with the movie.

As a testament to his own hard work ethic, Jacob Dylan has continued to record in spite of the lack of spotlight. With the release of his fifth disc, Rebel, Sweetheart, the singer/songwriter's dedication to the classic rock genre is again self-evident. Influences ranging from Springsteen's E Street Days ("God Says Nothing Back") to Tom Petty ("All Things New Again") ultimately reinforce Jacob's deep love of classic acoustic rock. The first single also happens to be one of Rebel, Sweetheart's strongest. "The Beautiful Side of Somewhere" is indicative of the younger Dylan's songwriting tendency to write with a darker pen; a tune begging the dark times to depart doesn't usually make for strong radio play, but the expansive musical swell at the track's end is one likely to bring new fans to the gates. The DualDisc version of the CD offers fans a 30 minute performance film, including reworked versions of "One Headlight" and "6th Avenue Heartbreak" as well as an amusing band interview with comedian Jon Lovitz. --Denise Sheppard

A beautiful album with stunning lyrics .......2007-06-18
Jakob Dylan's lyrics and music are mind boggling and he stands aside other greats such as Chris Cornell and Roger Waters\David Gilmour. An example of one of the many great albums by these artists:
1. Jakob Dylan - Rebel Sweetheart
2. Roger Waters\David Gilmour - The Final Cut
3. Chris Cornell - Superunknown
new throwback.......2007-06-08
these guys sound like tom petty/elvis costello/the band neil young i get chills and tears listening to this stuff the apple didn't fall far great everything real edgy but still simple in a great way
Just not the same..........2007-01-06
I've listened to this album over and over, but I just don't like it that much. It's a shame because the Wallflowers have always been one of my favorite bands. However, the sound is too different-- it's too separated from the lullaby sound of the other albums.
Only good track in my opinion is #7, although it's not his typical sound, it's very catchy. It's been in my car CD player for months, but everytime I turn it on I wish I had one (any!) of his older CDs in there instead!
The Rocking Political Album.......2006-06-13
The Wallflowers have always been underrated, even during their Bringing Down The Horse days, but even more so they are never given the deserved credit of being more versatile then they let on. It's true that they've always followed the folk-rock blueprint, but if you truly listen to each album; you'll realize that they have a more varied pallet then most of their peers. With the band's fifth album, Rebel, Sweetheart, this revelation might actually dawn on people. While 2002's Red Letter Days is arguable their most musically diverse album, most listeners would think that the album is an exception. With this latest release, there's no denying that they treat each album as its own entity. This time, the Wallflowers come out blazing with a political force that is both inspiring and humbling, and a set of songs that grows on you with every listen. The album opens with the fiery "Days Of Wonder," which blisters into "The Passenger," on of the most interesting and irresistible songs in their catalogue. The rush continues to swell through the first single "Beautiful Side Of Somewhere" and "Here He Comes (Confessions Of A Drunken Marionette)" (the most powerful Wallflowers rocker since "Some Flowers Bloom Dead") finally melting into the slower "We're Already There." Needless to say, this is possibly the most consistent and engaging opening to a Wallflowers album since Bringing Down The Horse. The album is full of excellent songs, both rockers (like the pseudo-punkish "Back To California" and the chugging "All Things New Again")and ballads, not to mention the album's haunting centerpiece "God Says Nothing Back." Not only does this song essentially summarize the whole album, it speaks out in prose that few politically charged songs do these days. This is arguably the most profound song they have ever recorded and it will resonate after the first listen. While this may not have the immediate appeal of the classic Bringing Down The Horse, or the sonic and lyrical genius of (Breach), Rebel, Sweetheart displays and urgency not found on any other Wallflowers records; this is a call to arms, and the band has never sounded more alive, nor rocked as hard, after this near-masterpiece, the sky's the limit.
You know, I wish I liked this album.......2006-02-01
I will admit, the only other album I've heard from the Wallflowers is Bringing Down the Horse, which is undoubtedly their most commercially successful album. That album has songs with strong melodies and lyrics that are intriguing and make you think. This album, though, has a few good songs - mostly "the Passenger," "Beautiful Side of Somewhere," and a few likeable ones that I can't remember right now. The local radio station played "God Says Nothing Back" as the second single, but the lyrics just seem very cynical and I'm not quite sure what he's trying to say about God, death, time and love except that you get burnt by life. Not very poetic if you ask me. Generally, the lyrics are wordy and a bit too much, which might be OK, except that Dylan has the lousy habit of mumbling too much. The lyric sheet is there, but I don't have the patience and time to read it with every listen, as the lyrics are obviously important to the songs. But too many of the lyrics are obscure and elusive. I'm sure he's trying to say something, but I'll be damned if I know what it is. He mumbles a lot of the words and the production is generally murky and indistinct - too many of the songs are not memorable. Some albums like this will grow on you, but I just got annoyed with this album more after each listen. Sorry, I doubt I'll give this album another chance.

Wallflowers frontman Jakob Dylan may have learned the art of ambiguity from his famous father, but as he opens up on the group's bittersweet fourth album he emerges as a true individual. The band's first release since the departure of guitarist Michael Ward, who came on board to make the four-million-selling 1996 album, Bringing Down the Horse, finds Dylan raking over the details of his personal life in close detail. "I think I made a mistake / I think I pushed when you said away," he sings on "If You Never Got Sick," while using blunt tracks like "Too Late to Quit" and "Health and Happiness" to get in further jabs at the woman who did him wrong. To accompany this outpouring of emotion, the band infuses its midtempo Americana with fizzing electronic effects and hard backbeats. It's the Wallflowers' most adventurous and rewarding album yet. --Jaan Uhelszki

Long Live Rock and Roll.......2007-03-22
Red Letter Days is an example of great musicianship. The song writing is powerful, and the vocals are, as always, distinct. The best part is how the whole album listens from start to finish. If you're looking for music to get deep into, this is it. It had my playing air guitar and singing along. Great fun for a 24 year old! ;)
I feel like I am taking crazy pills!!!.......2006-09-12
OK, let me say that I own every Wallflowers album. I have given a five star rating to every single one of them except this one, which I give a one star rating to. Imagine my shock when I open up the reviews and see so many five star ratings. Hey, that is cool, to each their own, but I don't get it. This album seems sappy and desperate to appeal commercially. I hate to use the phrase "sell-out," but I have to. The word cheesy comes to mind on many songs. I actually felt embarassed listening to some. This is nowhere close to Rebel Heart or Breach or BDTH, not even in the same ballpark. I listen to those albums weekly, this one I took to the used record store (where I bought it) and sold it back. Great band, but this album is really bad, in my opinion. Still a great band and if you like it, more power to you.

The Wallflowers Red Letter Days is so good you will be begging for more. This album I guess you would say is more poppy, simpler songwriting and arragements but this album is brilliant from start to finish. This is their best album since Bringing Down the Horse. Jakob Dylan's vocals are smooth, dreamy, and strong as can be on Red Letter Days, this beautiful man can do no wrong. Honestly I have never heard a bad song from this much under-rated band ever! Stanout tracks from Red Letter Days include: How Good It Can Get, Health and Happiness, When You're On Top, Closer To You, Three Ways, See You When I Get There, and Here in Pleasantville. I just about wept when I heard the song Closer To You, this song is so haunting and gorgeous, great piano music and vocals. No one ever talks about The Wallflowers anymore and it's a darn shame because this incredible band is worth talking and hearing, buy this album as soon as possible. Enjoy!
This is how good it can get........2005-11-22
Like most people, I got into the Wallflowers with the song "One Headlight." But it seems only a minority have been lucky enough (and smart enough) to stick around and be rewarded with such great music. This is, hands-down, my favorite of all five Wallflowers albums. Don't let the lack of radio play scare you away. The Wallflowers haven't lost a beat since "Bringing Down the Horse." This is just quality music that you can listen to over and over.
Favorite song: Three Ways
Wallflowers forgotten?.......2005-11-20
I really loved The Wallflowers first album, "Bringing Down The Horse," but for some reason or another, I just lost interest in them soon thereafter. I got this album from a friend and after a few listens, I was reminded how good the WF's are. This is not a new groundbreaking album, but is just good old quality music. Excellent chords and catchy hooks are all over here. The whole album is pretty good and there are 4-5 really great songs. My favorites are "Closer To You," "If You Never Got Sick," "Here In Pleasantville," and my favorite, "Three Ways." If you've ever been remotely interested in the Wallflowers, I highly recommend picking this one up. Pretty sure you will not be disappointed.

The Wallflowers' third album isn't so much a breach birth as it is past-due. But Jakob Dylan claimed he needed the four years off to come to terms with whether or not he could plumb his own life for material. It appears he can, because here the songwriter tears the veil off his complicated relationship with his famous father and uses it as a vehicle to express some of the same moments of self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy that we all experience, even if we aren't related to Bob Dylan. This newfound candor in the formerly abstruse singer makes for a much more authentic, emotionally affective record, whether he's wearing his neuroses on his sleeve or reinventing old slave spirituals in "Mourning Train." And even if you don't believe that the Dylan paterfamilias ever castigated his son like "Hand Me Down" infers ("Now look at you / With your worn out shoes / Living proof evolution is through"), it makes for compelling listening, made even more persuasive by the Wallflowers' sparse, muscular playing, which evokes the specter of those titans of classic rock: Jackson Browne, the Eagles, and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers. --Jaan Uhelszki

This is where they're reaching the pinnacle.......2007-07-12
I liked the Wallflowers from the beginning, but "Breach" is where you start to see the lyrics become personal. Jakob Dylan's reached down deep and come up with some winners. "Murder 101", and "Some Flowers Bloom Dead" are two favorites--right now. I cannot consistently say there's just one song on any Wallflowers CD. Their music is consistently good and interesting even when it's not the most recent.
Great Album.......2006-02-13
This is a super album to hang out with friends and listen over a drink.
My Favorite Wallflowers CD.......2005-08-03
I like this one better than Bringing Down the Horse because it has some of my favorite songs on it. Jakob Dylan grows on each record and his lyrics keep getting better and better. Favorites include Letters from the Wasteland, Sleepwalker, I've Been Delivered, Some Flowers Bloom Dead, and Murder 101. This record sounds so good and is going to become a classic like BDTH. Highly Recommended.
Well worth the wait.......2005-07-21
From the very first track you are drawn into this expansive and well compiled album from The Wallflowers. Each component of the band is well blended to form a unified sound and is complimented by the powerful lyrics. Quite often artists experience a slight hedge in their productivity as the number of albums they release grows. This is very much the opposite with The Wallflowers as this is a strong release and I would even venture to say their best yet. The song lyrics express their character while their musicianship shows why they are at the top of their game.
More mature Dylan.......2005-05-27
This record is more mature than Bringing Down the Horse, and there are some some wonderful songs on it, but I dont think it measures up to Red Letter Days or Rebel, Sweetheart. A few slow and depressing songs, but otherwise a very good effort. Favorite songs are I've Been Delivered, Some Flowers Bloom Dead, Letters From the Wasteland, and Sleepwalker.

Anyone who saw the Wallflowers perform live in the early '90s surely could tell the band had a good shot at making it big. With their folk-rock tunes led by the vocals of Jakob Dylan and Rami Jaffee's swelling Hammond organ, they sounded like nothing so much as the Band playing with Jakob's dad, Bob. The songs on their self-titled debut weren't quite there, however, so the Wallflowers breakout was deferred until 1996, when they released Bringing Down the Horse. Still, there are some fine moments on The Wallflowers, including "Shy of the Moon," the rocking "Ashes to Ashes," and the rambling "Sidewalk Annie." --Daniel Durchholz

Better than reviewed.......2007-05-17
I like the Wallflowers later stuff so I decided to give the earlier music a listen. You can hear how they've matured in their style. All around good stuff.
barely the same band.......2006-08-30
Not only is the sound a complete 180 from later works, but the lineup, with the x-ception of Jakob Dylan and Organist Rami Jaffi, is completey different.
Be forwarned that, before you buy this, if you were all about "Horse," this is nothing (and I mean just that, nothing) like "Horse." It's rockier, more keyboard driven, and really sounds more like something that would come out in the mid 70's than the early 90's. The advantage I had with this is that it was actually my first Wallflowers album. got it in like '97 for Christmas I believe by recommendation. Now that I look back, I actually think it was a wrong recommendation, and that whoever it was actually heard Bringing Down The Horse and didn't realize that 1.) the album had a title, and 2.) there was an album that preceeded that WAS self-titled. So, it worked it's self out naturally that I ended up with this.
don't let any of this, however, discourage you from giving the cd at least a listen. No, it's not the masterpiece that Bringing Down The Horse is, nor is it the nearly flawless third album that is Breach. Still, this is a good cd. There are some definate memorable moments here. "Sidewalk Annie" is a very powerful rock tune, "Shy of the moon" is fun opener that makes no sense whatsoever but that's okay, it works. "For The Life Of Me," the album's closer and NOT the Verve Pipe tune, has funny production (if you listen closerly, the vocals are a bit distorted) but is every bit as good. Love the lyrics in tunes such as "B Your Own Girl" and "Another One In The Dark." "Asleep At The Wheel" is Jakob's only solo acoustic song to my knowledge, and really shows off his guitar playing abilities well, something he isn't always known much for.
There are two things that stand out to me that this album does really well. First of all, it offers something drastically different for fans who are willing. It's their roots. Such an evolution of sound deserves at least a time capsul such as this. And second, it ages well. I thought I had traded this cd in for sure, hadn't seen it in a couple of years, but just the other day I found it under the seat of my car. I'm glad I did. I enjoy it more than ever.
There are a few little things I won't get into that keep it from being a great album, but there is one big thing-the legnth of most of the songs. "Hollywood" and "Honeybee" are both slow boring tracks that go on for like 9 minutes. I usually skip them completely. "Somebody Else's Money" starts out with a very interesting Piano lick, but by minute 5, I'm checking my watch.
Overall, if you are,
1. at devote fan
2. a person of diverse musical tastes
3. into classic mid-seventies rock
...then get it. But if you are a fan of the later sound more than anything, it might not be for you
it's different.......2006-05-09
my friend visiting from colo turned me on to them in 93. we were roofing and would end the day with cold beers and the wallflowers playing out the box up on the roof. they played the rosebud in pittsburgh that summer and there were 6 people in the audience. i saw them years later again at the rosebud in pittsuburgh, but it was crowded as hell this time. spent $150 on J?ger. Jakob hung out with the crowd after the show. long story short; it's a good album.
Better than all which followed.......2006-01-10
This album was never surpassed by all other Wallflowers' albums. The live feel, immediacy and indulgence in storytelling and an extended jam payed off here. Too bad the band followed this up with increasingly more boring albums. The second was pretty good, but they pretty much lost it after that.
Not the band we know and love..........2005-06-03
This CD is full of good alternative folk rock in the style of Jakob and Bob Dylan. A little less produced and a little less perfect than anything after it. But there's a good reason for this. Its not the same band. Now dont get all huffy puffy and say this guy doesnt know what he's talking about... Let me explain. In the late eighties, Jakob and his buddies put together a band and called it the Wallflowers. They played a lot of shows and released ONE album... This one. Because of tentions within the band, they broke up. It happens a lot these days. The Walflowers that put out this really good album are no longer in exsistance. Jakob and Keyboard man Rami J decided to start another band and called it.... The Wallfowers. Jakob was going to use a different name, but decided he liked the name he used in his previous band. And although the line-up has gone through some changes since the new band started, the nucleus remains Jakob on guitar Rami on keys and Greg Richling on Bass. With a new drummer and with Jakob doing all the guitar parts (mostly)... The band keeps going as The (NEW) Wallflowers. The old incarnation was a good one... but its just not the same band. Nevertheless... Check out the CD and see what Jakob and Rami sounded like before the popular version of the Wallflowers was ever even thought of.

3-1/2 stars -- Off the wall.......2005-10-14
First off, we all know about the trouble with DualDisc technology, so I'm not going to talk about that (I'm also not going to give the album one star because it wouldn't play in my computer; and just for the record, I didn't try to play it in my computer). I'm not sure enough people even know that the Wallflowers have an album out now, but while it's not their best work, it's still good.
By just looking at the title Rebel, Sweetheart (note to another reviewer, it is not called Rebel, Baby), some people might sigh and say, "Here we go again with another artist gone political." But what makes this album different is that the political messages aren't in so many words, but you can still get them. Standouts include "Days of Wonder", the introspective "God Says Nothing Back", and the metaphorical "I Am a Building". And "How Far You've Come" is a keep-your-head-up song that actually works, although I think it would have worked better if it were the last song on the album.
So why only 3-1/2 stars? Well, the album is produced by Brendan O'Brien, and as good of a producer he is, he overdoes it on here. Several of the songs' music is so loud that I can't hear what Jakob and the boys are saying (especially the first few tracks). Oh well, that doesn't make the songs bad, and if you've been following the Wallflowers up until this point, then you shouldn't rebel against picking up this album.
Anthony Rupert
Another great record from the Wallflowers!.......2005-09-14
The Wallflowers just keep impressing me with each record they release. I loved "Bringing Down the Horse" (which, like many people, is how I was introduced to the Wallflowers), then about a year ago I bought "Red-Letter Days" which took a while to grow on me, but I really enjoy it now. When I heard the first single off "Rebel, Sweetheart", the awesome "Beautiful Side of Somewhere", I knew this record was going to be something special.
Excellent production, musicianship, songwriting and lyrics have combined to give us the best Wallflowers album yet. If you haven't listened to these guys since their chart days of 1996, buy this! You will not be disappointed!!
For DVD-Audio fans like myself, the DualDisc offers us Advanced Resolution Stereo and Surround mixes on the DVD side of the disc. If you don't have a DVD-Audio player, you still get Dolby Stereo and Surround mixes that still sound better than CD-quality audio.
The 5.1 channel surround sound mix is really nice, though it appears that they mainly only use the back speakers for ambient sounds.
Standout tracks here are "Days of Wonder", "The Beautiful Side of Somewhere", "Back to California", "Nearly Beloved" and "All Things Are New Again".
History in the making........2005-06-26
I feel honoured to be here, while history of such magnitude is taking place. This album is one that will stand the test of time. The Wallflowers have swept me up in their romance of lyrics and music since i first heard the opening to Sleepwalker. This album with such beautiful tunes as 'days of wonder' and 'the passenger' is no exception to their high standard of brilliance. Bob Dylan could not ask for, nor recieve any better legacy than Jakob.
Well worth waiting for, but problems with the DVD.......2005-06-11
I really enjoyed the new material, but had some problems with the DVD. I could only get the "Playlist Stereo" to work on my player (Pioneer DVD575). When I selected "Playlist Surround Sound", the digital signal to my 5.1 amplifer dropped and I could only get sound from my TV (which isnt 5.1). I think that the disk is actualy DVD-Audio (which like SACD I think requires 5 distinct component connections rather than a digital coaxial or optical connection to make it work). I know my player can play SACD and DVD-Audio disks, but have no other similar disk to try, and I am not messing around connecting the 5 audio outs to my seperate amp inputs. I wonder if anyone else had any problems playing the surround sound section ?

Album Description
Perhaps the most high-powered tribute band in the history of rock, Hand of Doom is the supergroup side project of Melissa Auf Der Maur (Auf De Maur, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins). Formed in homage to the mighty Black Sabbath, Hand of Doom (which features Auf Der Maur doing her first real turn on lead vocals) recorded their debut live on LA's Sunset Strip during now-legendary shows at the Whisky, Troubadour and Spaceland.
Hand of Doom gives their own high-energy spin to such Sabbath milestones as "Paranoid" and "War Pigs," while adding contemporary touches like turntables, a DJ and - in the role of Ronnie James Dio - guest lead vocals by Nick Oliveri of Queens of the Stone Age!
Customer Reviews:
Just another sabbath tribute in my book, I just don't think its that spectacular.......2006-10-20
I myst be in the minority on this CD, but I did not think it was anything special. I picked it up about 4 years ago when it came out, seeing Jack osbourne's comments on the cover thinking, hey, it's cheep and it might be good. Well, it's ok, but nothing to write home about. Yes, It's unique in the fact that a female, Mellisa Auf der Mauer does the vocals, which is cool, but I don't think its anything spectacular. I think the mastering makes it sound a bit rough, but otherwise, their unique vocals, and definitely are not Ozzy or anything close. The band sounds like it lacks something as well, I Think it may be the heaviness of the bass or the distortion on guitar is less, or maybe lighter strings, but it just didn't carry the heaviness that strikes me as sabbath, again, that could be the mastering as well. Prior reviewer's seem to give this group more credit in their tribute music than Toni Iommi for writing it, and the subsequent groups that Were labeled "black sabbath" after ozzy left. The live albums they put out with Dio and Tony Martin on vocals were as good as this and just a intense, but had the backing of Toni Iommi. I wouldn't go out of my way to purchace this CD, but the used price is nice here on Amazon, and it is a better tribute than many of the others. So if you collect tributes, this may be one for you.
Melissa ROCKS!!! Does Ozzy better than Ozzy!!!.......2004-11-08
I am not a huge fan of Black Sabbath by any stretch, but I am a huge fan of good metal done well. Melissa and company completely deliver, and I am impressed how these songs are made "fresh" after hearing the "tired" sounding original versions by Ozzy & co. I think that Melissa's performance alone makes this cd worth while, even though the band's performance is definately up to par. She keeps the Ozzy "schtik" up throughout, and it makes for an interesting listen. The set list granted is not very adventurous (I personally miss "Sweet Leaf" and "Sabbra Cadabbra"), but the only sub-standard moment is "The Mob Rules" towards the end, the one song where Melissa is nowhere to be found. Yes, I am a big fan of Melissa Auf Der Maur's work (Hole, live Smashing Pumpkins, and solo cd), this is absolutely no low point of hopefully a very long career! Cheers and "flash the metal" proudly while playing this cd loud!!!
Good performances, but too much of a carbon copy........2004-05-01
The recording is good, the instrumental players are skilled, and Melissa Auf der Maur's vocal performance contains enough attitude to compensate for its shaky pitch and lack of range.
So what's the problem? Like so many others (even the ever-inventive Faith No More) who have covered Black Sabbath songs, Hand of Doom has stayed entirely too true to the original arrangements and sounds. Black Sabbath is the kind of band that holds a mystical power over its acolytes and it's not surprising that musicians who love the band have a preconceived notion of how these songs should sound. But the tracks on Hand of Doom, though I enjoyed them, sound so close to the originals that I wondered why I didn't just put on the original band. Auf der Maur's female vocals make them minutely different, but I definitely wish Hand of Doom would have been more inventive and done different things with these iconic songs.
And another thing: Do we need to hear yet more renditions of "War Pigs", "Iron Man" and "Paranoid", three of the most legendary (and therefore most tired) songs in the metal canon? The track selection on this EP shows a lack of adventurousness, something Black Sabbath never lost sight of. I would have loved to hear less obvious cover choices such as "Megalomania", "Killing Yourself to Live", "Am I Going Insane (Radio)", "Supernaut", "Zero the Hero", "Trashed", "The Wizard", and "Cornucopia". Instead, we get the three staples from the Paranoid album, songs I wouldn't mind never hearing covered ever again.
Hand of Doom is not bad as music; it's just at a loss for something to say. Hearing a completely faithful cover band may be enjoyable as a live experience, but a record demands more. Why perform and record songs in exactly the same way as they've been done, and done quite well, 30 years ago? I'd definitely recommend Melissa Auf der Maur's idiosyncratic solo record in lieu of Hand of Doom.
Melissa Auf der Maur Rules!.......2004-02-17
The band sounds so much like original Sabbath it's scarey (the bulk of the material is from the Paranoid album); they've got the chops down to a tee. Just way too cool. Add the sexy scowl of Melissa Auf der Maur and you have a near masterpiece. Her vocals on top of this killer band can not be described by mere words. This is a must have for ANY Sabbath or metal fan.
Awesome.......2002-09-29
This is harcore stuff. Awesome vocals and extreme guitar playing. This CD is better than Sabbath's original stuff! This band is for real!
