Desperate Housewives [Soundtrack]

Fans of the TV show Desperate Housewives are a mighty devoted bunch: thankfully, the wickedly clever dialogue and sassy badness of the characters is succinctly captured on the show's first compilation disc. This CD's lineup alone elicits an immediate "wow" response: Shania Twain, Joss Stone, LeAnn Rimes, Macy Gray, Indigo Girls, k.d. lang, and more have each packed the collection with previously-unreleased music. With half of the disc recently-written songs and half covers of old classics, the originals ultimately prove to be the highlight. Shania Twain's "Shoes" is a future line-dancin' classic, analogizing men to shoes ("a girl can't never have too many of 'em"). Joss Stone's "Treat Me Right" is nothing short of sexy, soul perfection, while SheDaisy's performance of the Jann Arden -penned "God Bless the American Housewife" kicks things off in a dark country style. The "who's that girl with the voice?" award goes to Idina Menzel (Rent, Wicked) for her powerhouse performance of "Damsel In Distress."
The covers on this CD are ultimately more clever than killer, but Liz Phair's take on the Rolling Stones' "Mother's Little Helper," the Indigo Girls' "Mrs. Robinson," and Martina McBride's "Harper Valley PTA" match the mood of the series perfectly. For no extra charge, there's some classic Desperate sound clips on the disc: quick audio bites taken from the show, providing glimpses of its compelling, acerbic tone. --Denise Sheppard

Love, love, love this CD!.......2007-07-07
The music is a great mix of poignant melodies and in-your-face women's rock. You don't have to be a fan of the show to appreciate these great tunes. I have it in the disc changer in my car and listen to it weekly...and have been for 2 years!
Music that fits the Housewives.......2007-06-11
This CD combos old covers with new artist (Band of Gold, Mrs Robinson, Harper Valley PTA) with new pieces by Joss Stone, Sara Evens, Idina Menzel (from the cast of Wicked-SEE THE REVIEW)..and piece of dialog for the Housewives cast first season for a great sound track
I love the cuts of SHeDAISY's God Bless the American Housewife and Shania Twain's Shoes. They move this soundtrack along
The one cut that dont work is Danny Elfman's Easter Egg cute (that is a cut supposely after the CD is over of his singing versionof the Desparate Housewives theme, BYPASS THIS CUT!
Catch the Housewives spirit, Get the CD!!

A decent mix of covers.......2006-03-27
Leaving aside the TV show tie-in nature of this album, this soundtrack stands up nicely as a concept album, with female artists covering classic tunes relating to love and domestic life.
A glance over the list of artists will suggest the soundtrack will be somewhat uneven, and that's borne out by a through listening. SheDaisy doesn't really have the chops of Martina McBride, Liz Phair or the Indigo Girls (and the latter don't even seem to be trying particularly hard).
Some artists, like Phair or Gloria Estefan, try and put their own spin on things, while others do a more note-for-note classic rendition. It's typically those trying to make the song their own who succeed the best, and there are enough such performances to make this album work.
Fun stuff, although it's a shame more of it never made it onto the actual TV show.
A recommended purchase for fans of Liz Phair, Gloria Estefan or Martina McBride.
Pretty good CD.......2006-01-29
Great representation of Desperate Housewives, but probably not a CD for everyone - it's very country heavy. But I enjoyed it! Some of the songs truly made me laugh. (For instance, SheDaisy's God Bless the American Housewife) Overall a worthwhile CD though, I enjoyed it, and the Wisteria Lane track was great.
Desperate For It!.......2005-12-19
What an amazing album. So many soundtracks have made their way onto the market, but not many can claim to have a good rep. This one, I'm sure, will have. Like Legally Blonde 2 OST, or Shark's Tale OST, Desperate Housewives has a feature single, this one by Shania Twain, Shoes. From an artiste whose last album was her Greatest Hits, this comeback is surprisingly smooth and well-composed. Throw in other hits from Joss Stone, as well as theme tracks from the show, and you have one perfectly good album that can brighten up your day while doing laundry, or typing out a report for some deadline.

Lisa Marie Presley.......2007-01-10
When I heard a song on the radio and they announced it was Lisa Marie - I couldn't believe it - she has a great voice and I wanted to be able to hear more of her songs.
Hard Rockin' Laundry.......2005-05-28
Don Henley has recorded some great pop songs and with the Eagles. Yet, there have been some good and not very well-recorded versions of his songs. A few years back, The Ataris recorded a tactless version of his hit song The Boys Of Summer. While that version was terrible, Lisa Marie Presley has made one of his great songs her own very well. Her remarke of Don Henley's Dirty Laundry is very well made. The song is very upbeat and still shows how gritty Lisa is a recording artist. This first single from Lisa's sophmore Now What record is a great song, and one of the best cover songs this year. I absolutely like this version a whole lot.
