Must Have Soundtrack With a Few Omissions.......2007-07-08
Anyone who loved Firefly should own this album. Not only can you show your support for the franchise, but you get to listen to the great work of Greg Edmonson whenever you like. About half of the tracks are memorable favorites that will immediately bring back vivid memories of the show and the remainder are still good now and then.
Like the movie soundtrack for Serenity, the only real down side is the absence of one or two small pieces. In this case, the absence of The Hero of Canton from the episode Jaynestown is something that must be made up with a download from the internet.
Firefly is the best small time t.v. sound track.......2007-05-13
This CD is the best 'small time' t.v. sound track. No big sound or spectacular songs, but the music moves you back to the time of the Old Wild West meets new Country Western.
Firefly.......2007-05-13
Excellent series with few coming close or even equal. And a movie to boot.
Firefly Soundtrack- Great!.......2007-05-08
This is a truly great soundtrack, the mixture of eastern and western music, provided this show with the truly perfect compliment. A show this good needed a soundtrack to keep up with it, and that it does, the music not only compliments the show extremely well, but it holds its own as well, bringing you back to memories of the greatest show of all time. Buy the DVD to go with it! You won't regret it!
Just get the DVDs.......2007-03-19
Honestly, whats not to like about Firefly? Its written by Joss Whedon, sure, but all the hype about Buffy etc is beside the point; this is an ensemble cast that REALLY liked to work together and it shows. It shows so much it makes you wanna crawl into the scene and be one of them.
Seriously, the only people I've ever met who've watched Firefly and claim to have NOT liked it have 1) had some axe to grind with Whedon or 2)seemed to think it made them look smarter to dismiss this work of genius. Their loss. Firefly rocks.

Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13
This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.
A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25
This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!
Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12
It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."
An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18
The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Joseph Lamb, a white musician who lived from 1887 to 1960, was considered one of the major ragtime composers of his era. By the end of his life, he had fallen into total obscurity, and even the ragtime revival hasn't made him a household name. His rags are different in style from Scott Joplin's, generally briefer and simpler in construction but still filled with lovely melodies and unaffected charm. The "American Beauty Rag," from which this disc takes its name, is only one of Lamb's many delicious miniatures (most of them under three minutes). Virginia Eskin has the style of this music down perfectly. She plays with just the right tempos (a trifle faster than would be appropriate for most of Joplin) and a lyrical sensitivity that doesn't prevent her from showing rhythmic drive. We're used to more than 49 minutes of music on most CDs, but 20 of Lamb's rags in a row are enough for one listening session. Don't give up before you reach the last one, though; "Nightingale Rag" is one of Lamb's best. A fascinating byway in American music is effectively explored and presented in realistic sound. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
American Sorta-Beauties.......2007-05-06
Ms. Eskin certainly can play piano. She can certainly read music. And she can combine the two well enough. What I found most distracting about this album, however, isn't the fact that she doesn't repeat many of the measures. It's that she tends occasionally to hit clinkers. After the first one or two, I found myself listening more closely for mistakes than actually enjoying the music. Another problem with this album is that her renditions are too bulky and heavy. I've heard much cleaner-sounding performances of Lamb's work.
I paid the money so I don't intend to return the CD. But it'll play well enough in my noisy car driving to and from work.
Good, but not great.......2005-10-10
I have owned this album since June 2000, and it inspired me at the time to find out more online and even to compose some rags of my own. It turns out that many of the melodies are made more "logical" by Eskin. However, she does use too much pedal, and she also does not take most of the repeats. It is unfortunate that she repeats only the first strain of "Ragtime Reverie," for there are no on-demand recordings of that work over the Internet.
good.......2005-07-31
its a good album but not very good
first of all in several rags virgina doesn't repeat where it says it must. second she plays several rags way to fast. Joe lamb was just like the others that ragtime must not be played fast the feeling get lost in the a rag that is played to fast like ragtime nightingale. I have the sheetmusic myself and it says "slow march tempo" not fast like virginia it plays.
but its a good album she plays with flair and style
Exquisite!.......2002-12-29
Joseph F. Lamb is generally thought of as one of the three greatest of the classical ragtime composers, the others being Scott Joplin and James Scott. It's a matter of taste, but many rank him almost as highly as Joplin, and this exquisite album shows why. Lamb's rags typically soar with wonderful, reverie-evoking melodies, unmatched in the ragtime canon. These melodies are offset by original, exciting, brisk passages. Virginia Eskin executes these gems wonderfully. She presents them always at the proper tempo and as written, without the filigrees that are so common in ragtime playing (Lamb doesn't need them!). The only drawback -- and it is a very minor one -- is that she sometimes treads a little too heavily on the pedal. This album is essential in even a small ragtime collection. In my large collection, it is one of my favorite and oft-played treasures.
Excellent Rags Played with Gusto.......2002-08-04
Up until Joseph Lamb, the only ragtime composer who could satisfy me was Scott Joplin. These rags are excellent and distinctly different from Joplin's, although both composers are obviously from the same genre. According to the liner notes, they even knew each other.
The pianist has a great love of the material, and it shows in her playing.
I highly recommend this CD to all fans of ragtime.

" Too Much! ".......2002-01-17
I have always been curious about Emily Remler. I had heard so much about her talent, but never heard her playing, until buying this CD. Let's just say that this is about as perfect as a Jazz album can be...it's very easy to listen to, and all of the musicians are tops in their field. A few comments need to be made about the musicians who appear on this album with Remler. Pianist Hank Jones (my personal favorite pianist), bassist Bob Maize, and drummer Jake Hanna. Hanna and Maize offer warm, swinging support to all involved, and never get in the way, which is one reason the album is so effortless to listen to, and Hank Jones is, well, Hank Jones.
Now for Remler. She graduated Berklee College of Music at age 18, and recorded this album, her first as a leader, in 1981 at the age of 24. Listening to her playing, you would think that this was a player of vastly more experience and years. Being a Jazz musician myself I feel that I know a little bit about musicians and their talent levels, and I can honestly say that with this being the first time I actually heard Remler, I was very surprised at what I heard. She plays with a very easy style, and does not fall prey to the mistake that a lot of players make--playing too many notes just to show how fast they can play. She gets a very easy to listen to Jazz tone from her guitar, and her solos are constructed very intelligently. She goes for musicality rather than showmanship, and it pays off well.
While there is no clear cut "best" tune on the album, the seldom heard but very beautiful bossa by A.C. Jobim called "Look to the Sky" is very beautifully played. While Remler is a fine soloist, her exicution of cool, well placed chords is equally impressive.
All in all, this is a very fine album. On the liner notes there is a quote from the famous Jazz author, W. Royal Stokes. It reads...."Remler is a prodigy and a phenomenon....Too much!" Indeed.

Customer Reviews:
Just plain great to listen to...........2006-09-27
Even with the year old classics like Mal's Song and the Ballad of Joss, which bring back great memories of Firefly and Serenity, I believe the power of this soundtrack lies in its instrumental tracks. I was moved to buy this after watching the documentary. But from folk to ballad to whimsical, this is a great soundtrack to listen to regardless if you want Firefly music or just good music.
May be even better than the documentary.......2006-09-21
If you're a Firefly fan, you've no doubt heard some of these songs before. The Bedlam Bards' "Ballad of Joss" and Michelle Dockrey's "Mal's Song" have been making the rounds for over a year now, and several of the other artists have been performing at conventions around the country. But this CD collects all of your favorites and adds some new ones in, including some instrumental versions that are just beautiful.
It's not a sequel or a new season, but close your eyes and let this collection take you back to the 'verse.

Interesting, varied, album- worth owning.......2006-11-25
I bought this CD on a gamble and was pleased to find that it's actually pretty good. Jana has a great voice and apparently cowrote (lead credit)11 out of the 16 songs.
There are four instrumentals, #1 "Tana'ke" has some vocals but no lyrics listed in the liner notes (for the quote the English part is based on look under the CD), several pop or pop/dance based tunes, a country tune and even a couple of songs with gospel influence.
I think I especially liked #3 "Survive the Night", and #4 "I'll be with you" but for someone unknown to me Jana Mashonee seems to be a very good singer with a varied style and a lot of creativity. I don't regret buying this CD and think it is worth owning.
"Flash" lingers.......2005-11-10
A debut recording to be proud of, this is a wonderful album that transcends genres to make a fun, soulful, inspirational and vocally impressive listening experience. Her writing is true poetry and this girl can sing.
Jana shines..........2005-06-01
North Carolinian, Jana, has released a much anticipated debut album of original material. Her previous releases were club singles, including a dance remake of Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" and MTV's DJ Skribble's mix "More Than Life." The singles found popularity in dance clubs and raves across the country and placed the singer on the Billboard dance charts. After enjoying success as the first Native American female on the charts, and winning three NAMMY awards (Native American Music Awards), Jana releases her pop album, "Flash of a Firefly" which incorporates a diverse range of musical influences. With midtempo grooves, love ballads and an eclectic blend of tunes, the album has something for all ages.
On the smooth groove, "Survive the Night," she sings: "Where the Eagle flies, there's a place for us." The catchy song is one of her best. Two gospel influenced songs, "Friend Above," and "One Spirit" showcase the singers soulful vocals and positive lyrics. The songs, "Baby I Love You" and "Don't Go" are timeless tunes of love and are two of the most beautiful songs on the album. With its electric guitar and drumbeats, "From a Tightrope" has a digitized rock sound. Jana sings about the frustrations of living with misery and pain in our society. She also dabs into country with the catchy "Through the Eyes of a Woman."
The one minute techno-ish "Out the Window" and "Gotta Be" are mediocre, filler tracks. Despite those tunes, the Lumbee diva has succeeded in creating an album that should please everyone. Club-goers who are looking for a high-energy techno dance album similar to the singers past releases maybe disappointed, and will just have to wait for the remixes.

"Every Nerve Like A Firefly...Glowing...Divine".......2001-07-26
"As long as you are true to the life that you live, This is the time to feel love..."
What an exquisite song!
Featuring haunting lyrics and a sublime lead vocal by Jacqui Hunt (of Single Gun Theory), this is without question the most stunning track from Delerium's much lauded "Karma" album.
"Euphoria (Firefly)" blends ritualistic tribal chants with a symphony of delicate electronica that literally sweeps you away in its timeless majesty.
I urge you to buy this single if you can still find it - The Rabbit In The Moon remix is killer!
Magickal...perfection...beauty.........2001-01-09
When I bought the album KARMA, from which this track is from, I never thought I'd hear a song that completely embodied the emotions I felt in my relationship with my boyfriend. It speaks of the innocence, naievity, and the rememberance of pain that everone goes through before rejoicing in the magick of a real and lasting love. BUY this if you like Delerium's new style and Enigma. It has a touch of the romance of Sarah McLachlan, so if you like her style, you'll most likely like this. "Euphoria" is much more haunting though.
Beautiful.......2000-04-13
I have never connected with a song so beautiful and haunting. I gave this cd to someone that the song speaks directly about in my heart and soul.
Listen to the lyrics and be forever changed. I hope that you will be too.

Firefly flys but not much fire.......2007-02-28
Firefly is a good album but I'm not blown away.
I love Uriah Heep and think the albums Innocent
Victim and Fallen Angel were all brillant. Firefly
just seems too laid back but has some great songs.
Who Needs Me, Wise Man, Do You Know are all classic
Heep songs and the bonus track Crime of Passion is a
killer and should've been included on the album. After
listening to Firefly I go back to High n' Mighty and
Innocent Victim albums which are much stronger than this.
But if your a Heep fan like me you won't be disappointed
is you get it and it's worth a listen. OH the live version
of Who Needs Me is a killer!
The most underrated album of the bands career........2004-09-21
Firefly is the first album of the short lived (unforunately) John Lawton era. This album is right up there with their classics of the early 70's. John Lawton is just below David Bryon as far as vocal talent and much better than any of his successors. He's more blusier than Byron, but doesn't have the range.
If you are looking for the heavy side of the band, this album is not it. The material on this album is closer to the laid back tracks that dominate "The Magician Birthday". This album features more keyvboard dominated songs than guitar oriented songs.
Breakdown review of the tracks.
1. The Hanging Tree - UH returns to the fantasy theme on their earlier albums with this one. Nice guitar echo effects at the songs introduction.
2. Been Gone Too Long - Start out slow and then speeds up, though not too loud. Fits Lawton perfectly.
3. Who Needs Me. - A Southern rock boogie style song. Songwritter Ken Hensley would leave Heep for Southern rockers a few year later. His interest in Southern fried rock seems to show early here.
4. Wise Man - The Wizard, part II. Nice piano ballad that continues the theme of the Wizard on Demon and Wizards.
5. Do You Know - The weakest track on the album. A throw away.
6. Rollin On - Could easily be mistaken for a Paul Rogers' Bad Company ballad. Good song though.
7. Sympathy - Nice mid temple rocker.
8. Firefly - One of the best epic UH has ever done. Song by organist/guitarist Ken Hensley. Nice soft keyboards and accoustic guitars. Has a Crosby, Still, & Nash feel to it.
9. Crimes of Passion - Another song with a Bad Company feel to it.
10 A Far Better Way - This is a bonus track that should have made it on the original album. A soft ballad that sounds like it's was song by Ken Hensley (Doesn't sound like Lawton's gritty voice). Could have been an Elton John song. This song is a little different than the 1997 remaster version. There are a little more guitars featured in the 2004 deluxe remaster.
Also featured in the 2004 remaster are two previously unleased songs. Unlike any of the above songs, these are not album ready and are rough around the edges. You can still here scratches on these.
They are.
I Always Knew - Heep tries to do a Stevie Wonder type song on this. Very soulful. Wouldn't have sounded bad once it was cleaned up.
Dance Dance Dance - Heep attempting to do Disco Disco Disco. Could have fit on the Fallen Angel album along side What you say.
There is also a live version of Who Needs Me that is much different than the album version.

Spoiled Occasion.......2005-01-09
I love Greg Adams' tone. Whether playing muted trumpet or the open horn, his tone and style of playing are first rate. He is a gifted musician with a knack for writing catchy melodies with bounce, vibe and groove. What spoils this recording for me is the electronic drums, bass and keyboards. They manage to weigh this music down to the point of suffocating the life right out of these wonderful tracks. The lively brass section manages to keep this music afloat but Adams deserves much better. He should lose the programming and get live musicians to play this music and I guarantee that this disc will crackle like a roaring forest fire. Greg sounds great throughout this disc, but the musical experience is short lived because the vibe is so mechanical and soul-less. This talented musicain needs to hook up with a great bassist (like a Brian Bromberg or Nathan East) and strong drummer (like a Omar Hakim or David Garibaldi). A vibrant pianist (like a Joe Sample or David Benoit) who uses electronics for background colorations would breath new life into this music. With a good band vibing with him, Mr. Adams can then stretch out and soar to musical heights not achieved here. Come on Greg, Get it done!!!
Smoothjazz.com Review.......2004-11-17
Greg is one smooth operator, and one of the hottest players in Smooth Jazz. And I mean hot in every way possible. Not just his arrangements and musicianship, but everything from his platinum coiffure, to his snazzy attire; from his affectionate demeanor in person to his artful horns that actually look more like fine art than instruments. He's just got a way about him that oozes smooth and hip. This from the guy that knows exactly "What Is Hip." The former Tower of Power trumpeter has been turning heads in our format for a decade and this new release is no exception. Again, the term that comes to mind, is HOT (all caps). Sizzling, in fact. From the first/title track, which is a current hit, the infectious, "Firefly," this listener is hooked. Put this in your car for your morning commute and you'll want to just keep driving. My favorite thing about Greg Adams' albums is his sensitivity to song order. His tracking creates an over all sense of continuity and consistency that makes for an ideal listening experience. The progression on FIREFLY is divine. The entire album is captivating, as only a Greg Adams CD can be, so singling out songs is tough, but we really dig the fun "5 North" (because we know where this road leads), the sensual "The Crossing," (next single?) and the elegant and sophisticated, "She's Still Waiting," Tower fans check out "Love Motive." Smooth Jazz fans, buy this record, it's an essential! ~Sandy Shore
