4 out of 5 stars Reconsider This.......2006-01-12

A much under-appreciated record. As many did when this album was released, I dismissed it as being over-produced and even a sell-out to disco music, then in its heyday. Worse still, it didn't retain anything resembling the original Byrds sound, understandably still cherished by many including myself. After recent listenings I feel altogether differently about the album. First, it has several terrific songs, notably Hillman's "Long, Long Time" and "Surrender to Me," and no less than four superb Clark compositions. These, especially "Feelin Higher," anticipate the reach of Clark's masterpiece album "No Other," which I believe soon followed this record. (Listen for a reference to this album's title in this song.) And his "Release Me, Girl" contains, for my money, some of Clark's most impassioned, recorded singing. Also, the album's song's are rhythmically diverse and experimental, such as the Caribbean inflections of McGuinn's "Don't You Write Her Off" and the reved-up funk of "Release Me, Girl."
I have to say that these three fine artists were ahead of me with this one when it was originally released, but thankfully it wasn't too late to catch up.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad for a first go round as a threesome........2003-10-04

This CD may be offensive to Byrds fans for they were forces to make them go Las Vegas (in a way) on this. But this is completely enjoyable and at the time we fans were starved for any release. McGuinn and Hillman put out highly enjoyable songs, but be prepared to be impressed in the the pop vein still, by Gene Clark's 4 entries. His songs cut through the desert with a bit of a fine meal still left. As always during his career, and for whatever reason, he is underated here. But as a whole an enjoyable CD.

4 out of 5 stars When I bought this, I thought what were they thinking?? LOL.......2003-02-09

Yes, that was my original thought when i bought this CD years ago being a long time Byrds fan... i was expecting the jingle jangle of McGuinns guitar work and soaring vocals throughout, but instead it sounds like an "AM radio middle of the road 70s rock/contemporary disco" album that was produced maybe with some session musicians on songs filling in (check out the disco violin/horn hints in the album lol!!!). BUT the funny thing is, even though it doesnt sound like the Byrds, as you listen to the album, you really start to like it! The last song, Bye Bye Baby though does sound like ol' Jim McGuinn. Gene Clark really comes through on vocals-- i really think that if he were alive, he could of been singing in Vegas or something because he had such good folk rock voice-- move over Tom Jones! lol Chris Hillman has what I call a "middle-of-the-road radio voice"-- its nice, but just not exciting. All in all, add this album to your Byrds collection... its just a good crafted late 70s studio album of music veterans and is enjoyable to listen to!

5 out of 5 stars Byrds at the very top, even without Crosby........2001-12-05

After the very fine BYRDS 1973 (reunion) album, which ranks as high as the first "perfect" five Byrds albums, (Mr.Tambourine Man, Turn, Turn, Turn, 5th Dimension, Younger Than Yesterday and The Notorious Byrd Brothers), McGuinn, Clark and Hillman did it again, even not having the great Crosby with them. Even with no Neil Young nor Dylan songs, they reminded us of who they were, and of what heights they were capable of reaching. No one has the finesse that McGuinn has for compositions and for singing, and Hillman has proven to be the George Harrison of the Byrds, with totally original compositions, always with a fresh and honest sound. Also, who can sing (and write) like the late Clark? No one. McGuinn did it again in Back from Rio, which ranks as high as the above mentioned works. Hillman has proven over and over to be a great composer, with songs like Angel, on the McGuinn-Hillman album, reissued on the Ruturn Flight (I) album.
Clark the same with a unique song like Rain Song, out of the This Byrd Has Flown CD.
Critics who dislike the use of orchestation on this album would probably hate (and rightfully so) if these three extremely talented artists would have sounded just like in their early albums.
Unfortunately they, (including Crosby), did not follow, in the following 18 years, the pattern set on the Byrds 1973 album:
Two or three compositions from each one, possibly a song by Dylan, and essentialy two to three songs by Neil Young, to prove once and again that Clark was possibly the greatest wasted folk rock singer of all. So let's hope Roger, Chris and David shall provide us with some reunion works in the future.

4 out of 5 stars For fans only.......2001-12-05

If you love the Byrds, you will want this to support your collection. Not a great cd, but a solid effort. This cd is overly produced and too smooth sounding and the quality of songwriting is only average (why didn't McGuinn write more songs?), but it is a good example of california folk pop of the times (late 70's, think America, the Eagles and Seals and Croft). 'Long long time' is a beautifully played acoustic number, 'Stopping traffic' sounds very much like the Eagles, and 'Bye Bye Baby' is the closest thing to sounding like the Byrds on the cd. I finally purchased this cd when I was able to track down the cd with the bonus tracks on it and they are the songs that make the purchase worthwhile. The demo of 'Surrender to me (all acoustic, no overlaying production as on the original) is great, 'Little Girl' acoustically beautiful, and 'I love her' is naked sincerity. This would have been a great album if the production was cut back and the music was stripped down (as on the bonus tracks). But, it is a good listen nonetheless.

A combination of three albums in late 70's early 80's. The first five songs are the best featuring Mcguinn Clark and Hilman. Clark's participation dwindles to zero for the last four efforts. Much better to pick up a used copy of the first effort, "Mcguinn/Clark/Hilman"

4 out of 5 stars Clark and Hillman rule.......2006-07-22

It's hard to say who's band put on the better performance for this two disc collection. Gene Clark leads things off with the brevity of a four track set, but it's an explosive one. Chris Hillman drops in next with an eight track contribution that's dripping with diversity, and casts him as the gentler, kinder rocker in the trio. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd checks in last but not least, and despite rolling out a bevy of top notch compositions, he sounds more polished than I think he should, and at times coming off with perhaps less investment in this whole event than his predecessors. The McGuinn-Clark-Hillman reunion that tops off the collection, unfortunately, didn't even make the final cut. I will say this: I think the people who produced the disc got it right in leading off with Clark and Hillman. Disc one is easily the most entertaining of the two, while disc two gradually receeds through McGuinn into the reunion that probably shouldn't have been.

There are definite hightlights to be gleened from the montage, however. Clark's band leads off with the solid rhythm of 'Kansas City Southern' (emphatically pronounced as "SouthREN" by Clark in a thoroughly enjoyable, down-home dialect), and continues with his big guitar sound through 'Denver Or Wherever', the ballad 'Release Me Girl', and the fast-paced 'Hula Bula Man' (surely a Cajun cousin to McGuinn's Hunga Man from 'Lover Of the Bayou'). While the country-rock stylings of Clark emphasize the country over the rock, Chris Hillman reverses the order, prefering the rock over the country. There are highlights galore in this thoughtful set, including the sweet, familiar melody of 'Hot Burrito #2', the upbeat sound of 'Nothing Gets Through To You', the catchy use of horns and fat guitar runs on 'Playing the Fool', and most especially the closer, a fine medley of two of Hillman's finest compositions, 'It Doesn't Matter' and 'Bound To Lose', both of which appeared on the 1972 Manassas double album. In between these stellar tracks, Hillman offers soft country angst ('Quits'), average white-man angst ('The Witching Hour'), and spicy instrumental contributions from fiddle ('Rise and Fall') and slide guitar on the romantic ballad 'Rollin And Tumblin'. Hillman's performance demonstrates just how much his professionalism is underrated.

Disc two offers nine tracks from Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd, including a two-song medley on track four. Two years previous to this series of concerts, McGuinn had revived his career by touring with Bob Dylan. Unfortunately, the mainstays of McGuinns catalog, songs such as 'Mr. Spaceman', 'Lover of the Bayou', and 'Chestnut Mare' don't appear as beneficiaries of that revival. The relatively lackluster renditions of these tracks begs the question why McGuinn felt compelled to release them. His early 1970's performances of these compositions with Clarence White and The Byrds are clearly superior. The best performances Thunderbyrd offers are the more subtle numbers such as 'Golden Loom', with its laid back country stylings, and 'It's Gone', a classic 1970's romantic ballad. The only other track of note is the cover of 'American Girl', with McGuinn proving he can imitate Tom Petty every bit as well as he imitates Bob Dylan... and that's a compliment indeed.

Of the three faux Byrds reunion tracks, the opening number, 'So You Want To Be a Rock and Roll Star' is the only one to carry it's own weight. The emotional jolt of 3/5 of the original Byrds line-up being on stage together for the first time in a decade wears off quickly however. 'Mr. Tambourine Man' is rather muddy in the middle, and the vocals sound more like yelling than singing. 'Eight Miles High', in total contrast to its nature, comes off tentative and lacking in energy and intensity.

If you're considering purchasing '3 Byrds Land In London', do so for the privilege of owning some of the best live recordings available of Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, and their solo bands. The McGuinn and faux-Byrds material on disc two is almost entirely superfluous. The packaging offers a modicum of images, and insights from Barry Ballard in the liner notes. There is probably much less to be said about these three bands touring together than you may suspect.

5 out of 5 stars I was there.......2001-07-02

As it says ...I was there. The album captures that absolutely incredible feel of being at a one off event. The first night as the only time they played together. Being a student in the UK in the late 60s I was lucky to see the Byrds play quite few times between 70 and 72, therefore the line-up was not the originals. When I went to this concert the intent was to see them and hope the three originals would play together at some point. They did and I along with all the others there were given a rare treat. I found this CD in '99 and was given a breath of that magical event. This is a classic. If you are a true Byrds fan this is a must, an absolute must.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Revelations Here.......2001-06-20

It is easy to dismiss artists that we are traveling with in our lifetimes. We set up expectations as listeners and pigeon-hole the artists within the preconceived ideas we have formed of them over the years. So, when I ran across a copy of this CD, I sat down and deliberately set aside my expectations from all three involved. Clark opens up with 4 numbers and it is great to hear him sound so on the money. The band is tight and his vocals have a solid, rough quality that puts the songs up into the 4 star range. Hillman follows with an enjoyable set that covers almost every aspect of his career. (I would have liked to have heard the Souther, Hillman and Furay numbers that the notes mention, somebody needs to get those 2 albums remastered, Hello Rhino!). Like Clark, Hillman tends to be forgotten by many, but his work and talent helped people like Stephen Stills and Gram Parsons move in the direction they wanted to. The best surprise of the CD was the forcefulness of Rick Vito's guitar work on the McGuinn numbers. He really shines on "Lover of the Bayou" and seems to be pushing McGuinn to work a little harder. It was also nice to hear "Chestnut Mare" in a different arrangement. The Byrds numbers do seem forced and a little hurried, but when you come down to it, it was nice of the three of them to go the extra mile. Buy this because of the excellence of the solo work, not for the Byrd numbers and you will not be let down. (In the rush to deify Gram Parsons, none of these gentlemen should ever be forgotten, especially Hillman.).

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GUITAR BY RICK VITO OF THUNDERBYRD.......2000-10-13

THE ROGER MCGUINN band on this CD features Rick Vito on lead guitar. The selection of songs make a great jump-off for his guitar style which is reminiscent of Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler. What we have here is a clean cluster of guitar breaks with even and charismic accenting. Pay particular attention to the song "LOver Of the Bayou". I e-mailed Rick Vito about this particular performance and he responded by telling me that his style has changed over the years and that he found a recent listening of this 1977 recording,"moving". Rick went on to play with Fleetwood Mac. Definately check out this CD.

2 out of 5 stars From BYRDS Fan's in CALIFORNIA.......2000-04-08

This CD had some of the best songs we have heard by THE BYRDS. Some of the songs had the sounds of the early years of the (four members) BYRDS Group. Some of the songs were also some of worst songs we think we have heard by THE BYRDS. The songs by Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd Band sounded the best and the last three songs sung by McGuinn/Hillman/ Clark were like the BYRDS of the late 60's and 70's. The sound quality was not that great. If you are a truly a BYRDS fan you probably would miss out if you did own this set.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem Any Way you Look At It.......2000-10-07

In 1979 I thought this was a superb album,in 2000 my opinion has not changed.I feel so strongly about this collection, that it still has a place in my 20 top album recordings of all time.It certainly ranks alongside *Sweetheart of the Rodeo*,by the Parsons/Hillman influenced Byrds,*Running On Empty* by Jackson Browne and Self titled,Robbie Robertson as masterpieces in there own right. Whether you think this a reflocking of the Byrds(nearly!)or three individual talents reuniting and using there developed talents in all respects, through vocals, song writing and production,..it doesnt matter, the only thing that matters is the results. If you love the rich and varied canvas that is pop music buy this CD.It should be in everyone collection.

Simply put this was a rare combination of stellar talents reuniting all their influences and skills to write sing and produce a contemporary counrty rock flavoured retrospective into the 60s and 70s,encapulating all the folk and pop influences that had guided the Byrds to superstardom.

Every track on this recording in excellent and is stamped with the individuality of McGuinn Clarke and Hillman, but also benefits from lush and innovative production.Taken on a simple level it is a contemporay collection close to a *best of* example of what the three artists could do.The feel of this collection made me think of Jimmy Webb or Burt Bacharch, where songs lyrics melody and production are paramount.

It has been played by me,in its vinyl manifestation for over 20 years and it sounds as good today as it did then. The single *Dont You write Her Off Like That*is classic pop,but is only a small sample of what is good on this recording. The first 5 tracks are as close as you will get to perfectly produced and written contemporary pop/country rock at that time. You cannot help but sing along and be washed over by the vocals and lush production.Lead voclas are shared and the harmonies are superb.

I personally like the vocals of McGuinn on the more pastoral and beautiful *Bye Bye Baby* to close the set.It reminded me of Ballard of Easy Rider, and highlighted the vocal skills of McGuinn, AGAIN.!!! The tracks *Stopping Traffic*,*Backstage Pass*,*Long Long Time*,in fact all the tracks seem to meld perfectly together and have that eternal feel of freshness in lyric content and musical longetivity.

I was surprised to see that this is an import in the US,but I would personally recommend anyone buy this no matter what the price. This is an example of a record that was produced when everything went right and it all came together on the day.A classic collection of enduring contemporary pop.

I ,not surprisingly have given this 5 stars and would certainly rank this in personal musical gems....buy it!!!!

      4 out of 5 stars A wonderful "Byrds" sampler..........2000-02-02

Back in 1979, when this record was released, I listened with a wary ear; being a Byrds/Poco fan for so long, I didn't know what to expect. Aside from the Top 40 hit "Don't You Write Her Off...", I was amazed that the lyrical and musical content did not stray from the writers' roots of country rock. In 1979, with disco and punk rock on the heels of country rock music, the band's choice to stand firm in their musical genre proves to stand the test of time. Listen to this gem now and see why Roger, Gene (rest in peace) and Chris are one of music's finest musicians and songwriters.

4 out of 5 stars A Flawed but Rewarding Byrds Reunion.......2001-05-31

At long last, the CD release of one of my favorite albums of my youth. The album is flawed in many ways (a dated '70's production sound, harmonies that often lack the old Byrds magic, and some bland lead vocals by Hillman), yet it still remains a favorite of mine because of the songs. The ten songs are straightforward pop songs rich in melody and hooks, even if the lyrics don't offer too many surprises. For a "Byrds reunion" album, it is a bit light on a McGuinn sound -- only a couple of McGuinn lead vocals and a slick '70's guitar sound replacing the traditional Rickenbacker sound. All this said, tracks like Little Mama, Feelin Higher, Backstage Pass, Stopping Traffic, Sad Boy, and Don't You Write Her Off all stand out with strong melodies and structures that culminate in lilting choruses. It is that quality that makes this an essential listen to any follower of 60's folk-rock or even 70's pop. Only Don't You Write Her off got radio play back in 1979, but just about every track has what used to be called a "radio-friendly" catchiness to it. There were more exciting and cutting-edge things happening in the music world in 1979, but McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman should be recognized for the pop gem that it is, even with its flaws.
