Album Description

2007 digitally remastered two CD Deluxe Edition of the debut album from the Alan Parsons Project. featuring the original 1976 mix of the album, the 1987 remix and eight previously unreleased bonus tracks! Recorded at Abbey Road in 1975 and released in 1976, the idea for the Project came from manager and writer Eric Woolfson, who saw his role as an auteur, bringing together some of the greatest talents in music to bring to life Poe's sinister, gothic tales. Enlisting the white-hot production whiz-kid Alan Parsons, fresh from his work with Wings and Pink Floyd, the duo set about making dreams reality. The album remains a singular, compelling work and can be seen as a bridge between Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon and Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. Universal.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY SUPERB EDITION.......2007-07-02

This set caps the re-release of the first four AP-supervised remastered titles (three more to follow in September '07, and the final three in December).

For this edition, for the first time on CD, we finally get the original 1976 mix of the album that started it all. While I definitely prefer the '87 remix, there are passages in the original I also enjoy, so it's great to finally be able to compare the two, especially in glorious, remastered form.

In the additional material, there are two excellent spoken-word pieces: One, Orson Welles' entire original recitation, sans music/effects, and also a very enjoyable 1976 radio interview with AP and EW.

The booklet is a wonderful, detailed labor of love, with a great essay.

If you're an APP fan, this is an absolute must-own.

Album Description

Budget-price compilation featuring 14 tracks including, 'Everybody's Rockin'', 'Old Ways' & 'Bound For Glory'. Universal. 2001.

Album Details

Fourteen track assemblage of cuts from Young's years on Geffen Records. He was all over the musical map in this period, experimenting with futuristic electronics, reverting to rockabilly or going even further back to his love of country music. Whatever the facade, it's the song itself that will capture your ear and this turns out to be a great value for those who may have glossed over this important era of his career.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Strictly album tracks and poorly chosen.......2007-04-10

This is an barely passable overview of the Geffen years. It focuses on the wrong albums for the wrong reasons and misses most of the decent material from admittedly spotty albums. The North American compilation of Young's 80s work, Lucky Thirteen, is far superior - it covers more territory (including material from Landing on Water and a pair of great live takes with the Bluenotes), contains rarities and outtakes that usually surpass the album tracks, and works amazingly well as an album on its own. Two of this album's best tracks, Around the World and Transformer Man, are shared with Lucky Thirteen. Buy this compilation only after you pick that one up, and only if you have no plans of picking up the individual albums.

How the songlist breaks down:
From Trans: Little Thing Called Love, Like an Inca, Transformer Man
From Everybody's Rockin': Everybody's Rockin', Mystery Train, Rainin' in My Heart, Bright Lights Big City, Betty Lou's Got a New Pair of Shoes
From Life: Around the World
From Old Ways: California Sunset, My Boy, Old Ways, Once an Angel, Bound for Glory

Trans is three parts synth album and one part terrible hawaii-rock(?) (leftovers from the mercifully cancelled Island in the Sun). This comp selects two of the three Hawaii tracks. Though Like an Inca (an eviscerated version of the unreleased Hitchhiker) is the best of a bad lot, Computer Age or the original version of Sample and Hold would have been much better choices than the execrable "Little Thing Called Love", which sounds like a song written for Sesame Street that its producers rejected for inanity. Augh. "Tranformer Man" is a wonderful song, but it's also included on Lucky Thirteen.

Landing on Water is an acquired taste, but has some good material, and its absence from this compilation is unwarranted. This compilation contains nearly half of the half-hearted country album Old Ways, and not its better half. This album also includes half of the silly fun Everybody's Rockin' album, but not that album's best tracks, Wonderin' and Payola Blues.

In short: look elsewhere first.

3 out of 5 stars Neil, the forgotten years........2005-10-17

This is actually a collection of some of his less popular 80's material. Songs are drawn from the albums "Trans", "Old Ways", "Everybody's Rockin'", and elswhere. His label had problems with some of these songs not sounding "Neil" enough, and though it's not "After The Gold Rush", it's no doubt still Neil. This disc is definitely short on hits, but "Old Ways" and "Transformer Man" are classic, and there's also the title track, which is a cover of the great old Elvis song. While I might not call this essential, it is the missing link between his classic 70's period, and his late 80's "comeback".

Full title 'Mystery Seas (Letters Written #2)'. Second volume of the 'Letters Written' series from British guitarist/singer Martyn Bates who was one-half of Eyeless in Gaza & is one of the most individual and idiosyncratic of English vocalists. 'Mystery Seas' is a mixture of more recent songs and others that date back to the time of his first solo recording in 1982. 15 tracks. 1995 release. Standard jewel case.

5 out of 5 stars "A Beautiful Secret to Own".......2004-02-18

While this inscription (taken from the song 'Of Night'), proclaimed on the back of the CD, may seem somewhat arrogant, it is amazingly accurate. Mystery Seas, the second installment of MB's Letters Written series, is one of those albums that only a few have discovered; however, its haunting songs about isolation and the spirtual development it engenders feel so universal one wonders how it has remained so obscure. Much like its predecessor, Mystery Sea is mostly voice and organ with some keyboard colorings and mysterious, distant flutes. These songs, though minimal in their execution, feel like full compositions and completely absorb you in thier world. Stand-outs include the opener, "You, Looking to me..." (Martyn's passionate vocals blast over the pulsing organs), "Trade Winds" (a tranquil ballad over waves of "white noise"), "If I Could See in Everyone" (a faster-paced song that must be heard), and "Of Night" (a gorgeous closing piece). While some of the lyrics may seem fragmented, the emotions they describe are often fragmented in nature: the album as a whole fills in any gaps in individual songs. I am tempted to call this Martyn Bates' masterpiece, but since he never stops making great albums who knows! Also recomended: the Twelve Thousand Days CD's, which is Martyn with Alan Trench, and, of course, his work as the duo Eyeless in Gaza with Peter Becker.

2 out of 5 stars Good techno? For sure. Korn? No #@$&*%^ way........1999-01-15

For you people into techno and the like, this C.D. will be straight up your alley: loads of thump and strange dub sounds, and plenty of repetative drum machine racket. If you're a KoRn freak such as I, this C.D. isn't worth the cheap plastic it's printed on. Now I realise a fair amount of heavy bands, such as Pantera and Black Sabbath, have been technoed before, and to alright acclaim, but I'm not sure this is the way to go with KoRn's music. Their distinctive style and groundbreaking techniques are an island to themselves, and no-one should mess with it - EVER! Techno is good on its' own, metal is good on its' own, but it will take a better effort than this to successfully combine the two into something worthwhile and progressive. Unless you're a serious collector or obscure German techno freak, leave this one alone.

4 out of 5 stars A good cd? Yes. A KoRn cd? Not Really........1998-12-14

This German import contains some very good songs if you are into electronic music, but I do not consider it a remix cd. Some of the artists simply took one line from the song ("Get the f**k out of my face"), played it once, and went into a five minute techno song. The best mix on the cd is easily the remix by Ramms+ein, one of the most talented bands Germany has to offer. If you enjoy the music of KoRn or Ramms+ein, or enjoy electronica, this cd is worth adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars amazing single........1998-10-30

if you only like heavy music, this may not be the single for you. but if you're into korn, and also like a bit of techno and electronic thrown into the mix, this is the single to buy. it kicks major ass. worth every penny. it's like a half hour, so it's not exactly a short single. buy it.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This is totally different...But it's OK!.......2001-08-02

This is the Japanese Edition, Toy's Factory 2000. Songs:1.AWAKENING(intro),2.THE BROKEN SPELL,3.BLIND FURY,4.WORLDS APART,5.CRY OF FATE,6.ILLUSIONS TALE,7.MOONGATE CLIMBER(instrumental),8.EMBRACE THE MISTERY,9.SLEEP OF INNOCENCE,10.GRAIN OF SAND. This album is different from their debut "Crossing the Rubicon". The guitar and bass sound more like Ingwie Malmsteen's albums, making the epic and classic melodies more obvious than in "Crossing...". And you have to add the clean vocals...So, don`t expect fast and death metal riffs and vocals. You have classic vocals(with Dio & Ozzy influences) and classic riffs and changes of rhythms. If you've listened to Malmsteen's last albums you'll get the idea. You have the ballad "Grain of sand". I know, it's strange to listen Chris Amott playing a ballad, but he shows he is much more versatile than we think. Anyway, it's not the best I've heard, but it's a cool classic metal and rock 'n roll album. Great songs, solos and sound. Give it a try!
