Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Already a box office sensation with a million-selling soundtrack in its native France, writer/director Christopher Barratier's tale of a post-war music teacher's lasting impact on his young charges rode its formulaic Hollywood roots all the way to Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations as Best Foreign Language Film, as well as an Oscar nod for Best Song ("Look To Your Path [Vois Sur Ton Chemin]," a collaboration between the director and film composer Bruno Coulais). Taking his inspiration from the boy's chorus at the center of the film's drama, Coulais has concocted a masterful, classically rooted score that showcases the crystalline, youthful harmonies of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc Choir. The composer bridges the baroque and modern eras in a collection of mostly Latin choruses and chants, a skillful, often haunting fusion that also netted Coulais' compelling score BAFTA and Cesar Awards in Britain and his native France, respectively. -- Jerry McCulley

Product Description
The Chorus (Les Choristes), written and directed by Christophe Barratier, is already a French cinema phenomenon. The modestly budgeted film about a music teacher in a post-war France who wins over the troubled students at a boarding school arrived in French theatres last summer with little advance hype. Defying industry expectations, this affecting tale proceeded to break box-office records. The soundtrack to The Chorus (Les Choristes) features performers by the Lyon-based Petits Chanteurs de Saint Marc and several haunting solo turns by 13 year-old boy soprano Jean-Baptiste Maunier, who also portrays the youthful protagonist of the film.

The labels that are now gathered under the Universal Classics umbrella have a pretty impressive scorecard in the area of classical compilations. We've seen The Greatest Opera Show on Earth, The Yellow Guide: Classical Music, Best of the Millennium, and now there's The No. 1 Opera Album. But that's no surprise, since Universal has some of the finest interpreters in its catalogue to draw from. This two-CD set (at the price of one), for example, brings together the likes of Cecilia Bartoli, Renée Fleming, Luciano Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawa, Sir Georg Solti, Herbert von Karajan, and many more. Yet the other key to a successful compilation is canny anthologizing, and here again, you have a nice selection to give you a smattering of opera's heavyweights from the Italian, German, and French repertory (there's even a step outside the standard framework with an aria from Dvorák's lovely Rusalka). Ranging from 1959 to 1997, the choices from back catalogue will doubtless be the entry ticket for many into this grandest of the arts. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Pretty darn good.......2007-07-04

This CD set has a lot of familiar music on it, so if you're a newbie, you might want to try starting with this. There are some great pieces on the first CD. I usually don't even make it to the second.

2 out of 5 stars The Opera #1 Opera Album.......2007-06-07

The music is wonderful. The production is terrible!! The sound fades in and out and is very scratchy in some places.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent assortment.......2007-05-12

I'm not a big opera fan but I wanted to expose an assorted selection for my kids. This was perfect since it included several recognizable selections.

5 out of 5 stars Great Selections.......2007-03-31

This Cd, has the very best of Opera
covering mainly from the classcal
to the to the romantic periods, a most
memorable selection here is Leo Nucci
in a lagendary performance of Rossini's
"Largo al Factotum" from "Il Barbiere di Seviglia"
also Andrea Bocelli in his performance of Leoncavallo's
memorable "Matinatta" here in an orchestrated version.
Indeed some of opera's most loved arias are in this recording
various conductors, orchestras, and soloists. All in their
very best. Indeed a five-star recording...

5 out of 5 stars Terrific !.......2007-01-10

A diverse album to give you a sprinkle of the various types of 'opera'. Every note is pure and lovely, I listen to it all the time ! Highly recommended for anyone just getting into opera. :}

4 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Italian Opera.......2005-05-01

The artists on this CD succeed in their goal to create a CD that displays great Italian opera. Carlo del Monte and Victoria de los Angeles open the disc with the Brindisi from La Traviata. Victoria de los Angeles is not the best Violetta, but she does the job, along with her parner Carlo del Monte, an underappreciated tenor. Victoria de los Angeles also appears on the CD in "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly, a role she was well known for. Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda appears on the disc twice. His first appearence is a superb rendition of "La donna e mobile" from Rigoletto. His final performance on this disc is in the heroric aria "Celeste Aida", a performance in a role that was not in his voice range. Anna Moffo is the star on this CD, appearing three times in three very different roles. First is her beautiful "Una voce poco fa", normally a role that calls for a mezzo-soprano. Her second is "Voi che sapete" from Le Nozze di Figaro, another mezzo-soprano role. Her final appearence is her best, "The Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor. Underrated tenor Giuseppe Campora performs "Che gelida manina" with a great tenor voice. Soprano Reri Girst is excellent in her performance of "Caro nome" from Rigoletto. One of my favorite baritones appears on this CD. Robert Merrill is a perfect Count di Luna, and it is evident in his rendition of "Il balen del suo sorriso". Another baritone appears on this CD: mario Sereni. He is not a world famous baritone, but he should have been. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the world of Italian opera.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best!.......2003-01-11

The performers, the selections, the quality... almost divine!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous bargain for anyone.......2002-11-24

I would recommend this CD to anyone, from opera novice to experienced listener...

These are older recordings -- I would guess mostly from the 1960's. The recording quality is exceptional for the day and, while not the equivalent of modern engineering, is sufficient to allow sheer physical pleasure from the music and an immediate appreciation of the vocal qualities of the artists. The sound quality is the only mild drawback...

The performances are magnificent! The voices are almost entirely lighter and more agile than the great voices of the 80's and 90's. In fact, the ear of the editor is apparent in his preference for lighter and more agile voices.

For example, there is a beautiful rendition of "Che Gelida Manina" from someone I had never heard before, Guiseppe Campora. He does not have the weight or volume of Pavarotti or Domingo, but has more elegance and a pure, charming tone. A connoisseur performance, but nevertheless a true operatic rendition by a tenor who can hit the high C with authority -- as good for a newcomer to opera who wants to hear the real thing, as for an opera lover who would like to hear something a bit different.

Some of the artists were among the most famous singers of their day: Moffo, de los Angeles, Gedda.

Anna Moffo, one of the greatest sopranos of her day (and all time), is in magnificent voice in famous blockbusters from Rossini's Barber of Seville, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, and the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.

De Los Angeles is at her best in "Libiamo" from La Traviata, but the recording quality (the one inadequately engineered track on the CD) and her lack of oomph make for a second-rate version of "Un bel di".

In keeping with the light and lyrical orientation of the selections, Moffo -- a famous Gilda and hardly a dramatic voice -- is bypassed for the even lighter, sweeter and more agile colatura Reri Grist (while she still had her voice), in a lovely "Caro Nome".

Another nice selection is Mario Sereni performing "Di provenza, il mar". Both this and "Libiamo" are taken from one of my favorite recordings of Traviata -- also a great chance to hear Serafin at the helm of the Rome Opera House orchestra. (The 2-CD version of this is still available from EMI, I think.) Newcomers will love this pretty tune, and Sereni's archtypal Verdi baritone is good, although hardly the best ever.

Franco Corelli has never been a favorite of mine, but he sounds the best I've ever heard him in his rendition of "Cielo et mar".

Anyway, I didn't intend to list every cut. Whether you are an opera lover who would like to hear some of opera's most famous arias performed in a new light, or an opera lover who would like to hear great performances at a cut-rate price, this CD gets my unqualified approval.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs for a low price........2001-08-16

Ranging from selections of La Traviata, Il Trovatore and other popular Italian operas, this is a great cd for under four bucks. The singers may not be well recognized, but they do possess powerful voices.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good choice........2001-02-22

To the contrary of one of the other ratings, I think if you are new to opera, this is NOT the CD I would recommend as an introduction. While it DOES have many of the very well known, it is, in my opinion, very poor quality, done by people with hardly any feeling for the music. They are good singers, but that's all they are doing. Hearing someone sing words is much different than hearing someone accomplished sing the soul of the story. All in all, a very boring, poorly done CD. I guess you get what you pay for though. I just recived mine yesterday, and will probably return it. If you are new to opera, I would suggest Pavarotti. The 2 star rating is because the orchistra was good.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine

1 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13

I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.

Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.

Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!

4 out of 5 stars Mozart Listener.......2006-08-31

This is a good CD if you like Mozart's music. It is not the best CD I ever purchased. It is nice to listen to it in the morning before I go to work. And I sometimes listen to it in the evening before I go to bed. It is relaxing and soothing. I am not a music major or therapist. This is the best review I can write. Mary Agnes Cross

Michael Bennett's 1975 tale of Broadway's gypsies--the chorus dancers--resonated with audiences as few shows ever have, examining with both hilarity and heartbreak the grueling life of ordinary performers always auditioning for an opportunity to be members of a faceless chorus line. And along the way, it picked up the Pulitzer, the New York Drama Critics Award, and nine Tonys, and became the longest-running show in Broadway history. The original cast (eight of whom contributed their real-life memories to the show) included no major stars, but are unmatched on this cast recording of Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban's score, including Priscilla Lopez's poignant "Nothing," Donna McKechnie's yearning dance number "The Music and the Mirror," one of Broadway's most famous torch ballads in "What I Did for Love," and the ultimate high-kicking chorus number, "One." Fans of the show will welcome the 1998 remastered CD, which adds two and a half minutes to "Hello Twelve, Hello Thirteen, Hello Love." While still incomplete, the montage now includes "Four-foot ten," "Little brat," and "The worst thing in school...." --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars great soundtrack for a great show............2007-06-09

I first heard this soundtrack on my cousin's CD player, back when she was pursuing musical theater, as a young teenager (at least ten years ago). Some of the greatest songs from the musical repertoire are here: "What I Did For Love," "One," and "Nothing." It's always a great sign when a score (in this case, by the talented duo of Hamlisch and Kleban) works so well that people don't have to see the musical to know what it's about from just a few musical numbers. That isn't to say that the show isn't wonderful, too. To make long stories [very] short for the sake of the increasingly decreasing attention spans of my readers who just want to know "Should I buy this," A CHORUS LINE is the story of a group of singer/dancers from diverse backgrounds, coming together on one Broadway stage for the same reason. They all want a crack at being a part of a dancing chorus line on The Great White Way, that could be their big break. There are other dramas going on, behind that, of course (and we hear all of their stories, complete with monologue, song and dance number). The drama is high, but so is the infectiousness. You really build attachments and interests in each of the characters, and the story is so well-written, you'll be compelled to stick through the songs and follow the stories, just to see who is "The One." This is truly a great example of storytelling in musical theater. There is a reason it was one of the longest running shows on Broadway.

5 out of 5 stars A Chorus Line.......2007-05-31

Makes you recall the thrill of attending this terrific musical. You experience the glory and the pain and love every minute of it again.

5 out of 5 stars What They Did For Love.......2007-02-12

A Chorus Line was an unlikely Broadway hit--there were no big name celebrities to brighten up the stage, no elaborate sets, and, according to the liner notes, "almost no plot." However, A Chorus Line shined brightly because it highlighted the lives of the people who are in the chorus line of a Broadway musical. By focusing on the people who normally don't make the leap into stardom, A Chorus Line paradoxically gained remarkable strength and popularity. A Chorus Line ran for fifteen years; and this CD shows why.

The CD begins with the track entitled "Opening: I Hope I Get It." Too many actors and actresses have arrived to compete for jobs in a chorus line in a Broadway production. Zach, the man who must chose the people who make the final cut, stuns the actors by requesting them to talk about themselves. This provides the premise for the rest of the music of the show. One by one the actors open up and share their life stories in song; and the music by Marvin Hamlisch enhances their songs greatly.

Several memorable stories told in song by the actors include "I Can Do That" in which Mike, performed by Wayne Cilento, tells about how he swiped his sister's dance shoes to race to a dance rehearsal; the beautiful ballad about escaping the heartache of real life at the theater entitled "At The Ballet" performed by Carole Bishop, Nancy Lane and Kay Cole; "Montage, Part 3: Gimme The Ball" performed by Michel Stuart and Ronald Dennis as Greg and Richie respectively; and "Dance: Ten; Looks Three" performed by Pamela Blair in the role of Val. Excellent!

Other numbers on this original cast recording deserve very special mention. "What I Did For Love" is delivered flawlessly by Priscilla Lopez and Company; in this song Priscilla's character Diana Morales sings beautifully of how she would have no regrets if she could never dance again. Priscilla Lopez also performs the memorable balled "Nothing" about how she simply did not profit from a course she took with an acting professor several years earlier.

The finale, a reprise of the smash number "One," features the cast singing together as polished professionals instead of the somewhat clumsy chorus line hopefuls they were before. I still remember feeling chills up and down my spine when I saw this number in the show at New York's Schubert Theater in 1979.

The liner notes have an excellent essay by Marc Kirkeby and the photos of the cast are a real treat. The notes indicate which actors performed each song and the artwork will impress you.

The sound is excellent even on my portable CD player. There is very little, if any, surface noise.

A Chorus Line represents a sophisticated look at the real lives of struggling actors and actresses. These people scramble for jobs in their chosen profession so that they can be happy and well fed at the same time. The catchy melodies by Marvin Hamlisch will delight you; and the lyrics by Edward Kleban display forethought and sheer brilliance.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of the theater and for people who love the outstanding music of Marvin Hamlisch. People who enjoy convincing exposés of the real lives of struggling actors will also enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars God, I hope you get it..........2006-11-28

I Just saw the new Broadway revival (which is fantastic), knew I had to give the original a re-listen, and have come to the conclussion that while it does not inspire deep thought or endeavor to change the world, A Chorus Line is a musical everyone, not just dancers and singers, can relate too. The central conceit of the show is the audience being invited to sit in on auditions for the dancing chorus of a broadway musical. Slowly the cast of hopeful auditionees dwindles to a victorious 8, who eventually earn roles and reveal much about their struggle for success. Yes, on the whole, it is a musical dancers will identify with, but it is not solely about dancing. A Chorus Line is about why and how we are able to do what we love. As we watch the audition play out on stage and hear the stories of the characters, one can't help but feel the same fear and pressure, and the cd masterfully captures the intimacy of "A Chorus Line".
A Chorus Line begins with the famous, pulse-pounding "GOD I HOPE I GET IT", where we hear the dancers inner thoughts while learning the choreography. This is a mostly danced number, but it is energetic, effecting and a brilliant opening.
More great numbers are "AT THE BALLET", which has three dancers taking down their "audition facades" and describing the therapy dance provided during troubled childhoods. The "MONTAGE" numbers are a funny mixture of painful, embarrassing, and entirely too real memories of teenage years. "DANCE 10, LOOKS 3" Is a hillarious yet sadly true song about the power of appearance. "WHAT I DID FOR LOVE" is one of the most original love songs of all time, about the sacrafices made not for the people we love, but for ourselves. It sumarizes the whole musical: Why we do what we do for the things we love.
The idea of A Chorus Line has become a little cliche after years and years of exposure and performance, but it is deffinately worth the praise it receives and fame it has accumilated. A must have for every lover of musical theatre.

5 out of 5 stars a great musical.......2006-11-06

I enjoy listening to the original broaadway musical A Chorus Line. However I didnt realize I was purchasing the broadway version. I was actually looking for the film version.

Ever! does its best to cover both well-worn classical favorites (Bach's "Air on the G String," Pachelbel's "Cannon," Debussy's "Clair de Lune") and some eclectic left-field choices (an excerpt from Górecki's Symphony No. 3, Jocelyn Pook's "Blow the Wind," and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings. 4 out of 5 stars Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

5 out of 5 stars Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

3 out of 5 stars Too much opera.......2007-01-10

If it wasn't for the opera this would be a great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

5 out of 5 stars TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

In the fall of 2006, A Chorus Line came back on Broadway 16 years after its original run closed, and it felt as if it had never left. The new production, put together by alums from the first one, is a carbon copy of Michael Bennett's groundbreaking staging, and the cast recording follows suit. The good news is that Marvin Hamlisch's energetic, pop-inflected score sounds as great as ever; the bad news: well, you might quibble with the staging but when it comes to the CD, there isn't really any bad news. This time around, the songs are performed in the order in which they are performed live, and the recording includes more of the incidental music and the dialogue. Among the highlights are Natalie Cortez's fabulous "Nothing" (check out the Bacharachian trumpet-and-piano arrangements, which aren't all that surprising since co-orchestrator Jonathan Tunick had worked on Bacharach's sole musical, Promises, Promises) and Jessica Lee Goldyn's uproarious "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three." And then there's "One," which remains one of the most memorable songs in the musical-theater catalogue—-lucky for us, we get it twice since it's reprised at the end. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars This Show is AMAZING.......2007-07-11

Although many other people have criticized this cast for its departure from the original production, I think this cast is awesome. Although you can never truly trump an original, the vocals in this cast are much more clear and they are truly amazing singers (and if you see the show, you'll know that they're also amazing dancers). The song, "What I Did for Love" is truly beautiful and a real tear jerker when you see it on the stage.

If you appreciate fine vocals, love A Chorus Line or love the sounds of the 1970's, this cd is perfect for you. I highly recommend that you buy this cd!!!

4 out of 5 stars Spot the difference.......2007-06-24

The music for A Chorus Line sounded endearingly dated in 1975, so you can only imagine the impact it has today. All those harps, the wah-wah guitars, the twinkly flutes and the clunky percussion. Close your eyes and you can see the credits role to some early seventies TV sit com...

And yet... this is A Chorus Line, and we love it. Having just seen the show for the first time live (on Broadway, with this cast) I now undertand that the show really is as wildly inconsistent and totally odd as the movie suggests. But the cast give it their all and act like they at least pretend they know what's happening.

I've marked this down one star for Charlotte d'Amboise's rendition of The Music and the Mirror. Boy this lady can dance. In heels! But I can't admire her for the way she sings "Gimme a chaaaaance to come thruuuuuuu". It was even worse on stage, so we are spared at least some of the horror.

Other than that there are very few differences compared with the slightly better 75 OBC recording, just the muffled sound is removed.

Interesting both for novices and for those buying it just to compare to the original.

4 out of 5 stars It's "A Chorus Line".......2007-06-05

Well, this is A Chorus Line. I don't hear much difference from the original. Sound quality is a little better, the voices are a little bit better, and there are a few added notes here and there, but overall I don't feel this is a must have if you already own the original. Now if you have to choose between which one to get, I would say get this one. As I've said the sound quality and some voices ARE better on this one, but not so drastically that you need this one. I like A Chorus Line and I am happy I got this CD, but it definitely doesn't wipe the original off the map. I suggest this for collectors, and younger new listeners. Favorite song: "What I Did For Love"

2 out of 5 stars "Dance 10, Voice 2".......2007-03-05

If you've seen the revival on Broadway, you know that the entire cast dances beautifully. Unfortunately, you can't see them dancing on the recording and while everyone always thinks of this as a "dancer's show" anyone who has seen the score knows how challenging the music is.

While there are a few cast members with exceptional voices, a few of them (including one in particular - you'll know who when you listen to the recording) fall a bit short of today's standards in the vocal department.

They should have added a song in this version called "Dance 10, Voice 2"...and not for Val!

I was disappointed when I saw the revival on Broadway (again, a few standouts like the actors who play Bebe, Don, Al, Val), but figured that they'd "correct" the vocal mistakes I heard while seeing it live on the recording (where they could do multiple takes). Alas, it's not any better on the recording.

The new orchestrations are nice and it's great that more of the amazing score was included, but this recording falls short. I'm sticking to the original.

1 out of 5 stars Ineffective Revival.......2007-03-03

Having seen the original in 1975 shortly after it opened, and subseqeuntly, different casts over the years, I was hugely disappointed in this production. While it would be unfair to expect the current revival to have the same impact as the original (they were, after all, playing their own lives), this is oddly unmoving. Every performer seems to be "acting", whereas the original, they all came aross as natural and real. Charlotte D'Amboise is talented and appealing but somehow, she too seems to be forced. Donna MacKechnie was heartbreaking, her dancing was pure passion and desperation, D'Amboise is just dancing really, really hard.
While there is a little more music on this cast album, stick to the OBC to get what it was all about.
I thought to the novice who'd never seen ACL, that this production would seem wonderful, but I have a sister and her husband who recently saw this (and had never seen any production before) and they found it rather dull and ineffective. The original simply overwhelmed with it's brilliance...not here. BTW avoid the dismal mess of a movie at all costs.

Album Description

Hayley Westenra's new album Odyssey was always going to be a different proposition to Pure, the record-breaking 2003 collection which marked her international debut. A lot has happened to the young New Zealander over the past two or three years--and those changes are clearly reflected by a record which encapsulates her growth from a budding teenage prodigy into a mature young woman.

Now, at 18, Hayley is ready to show the world how much she has grown up, both as an artist and as an individual. Fans of Pure will be pleasantly surprised by her new album. Her wonderful voice retains its crystal-clear purity, but Westenra's singing is now richer and more rounded than before. Touring the world and singing in some of its greatest concert venues, such as the Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall, has worked wonders for her confidence. Suitably emboldened, she has embraced an even wider range of musical styles including classical, hymns, folk and pop.

"I was happy with Pure at the time, but I've moved on so much," says Hayley. "It's really exciting to have something new out there for people to listen to. I wanted to make a record that represented me as a person. And I think I've improved as a vocalist."

Variety is certainly one of the keywords with Hayley's new album. When she first entered a recording studio in New Zealand as a 12-year-old, Westenra restricted herself to classical pieces and show tunes. Now, in addition to impressive takes on classical works, Hayley uses her new album to perform an inspired cover of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and has arranged and written much of the material. "I like to push myself, and I'm now confident enough to try different things. I have been much more involved behind the scenes with this album--I wanted to put my individual stamp on each song."

With her career stretching out promisingly before her, Hayley is also keen to continue experimenting. She is still primarily a classical crossover artist but she also wants to keep broadening those musical horizons. Three years after her international debut CD, Hayley Westenra is still pure: she exudes pure quality and she remains pure class--but her musical journey continues with her new album Odyssey.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful melodies.......2007-06-08

This is a wonderful CD with beautiful melodies. Hayley Westenra has a very pure voice and sings right on key. The melodies are very relaxing and the musical settings are well arranged.

4 out of 5 stars Hayley Westenra - Odyssey.......2007-06-08

Pure, crystalline, angelic voice. Gorgeously produced. "Prayer" is stunning. "Both Sides Now" wonderful. The rest is good but not her best song selection. When I first heard this girl on the "Celtic Woman" tour I was totally blown away. None of her CDs will disappoint!

4 out of 5 stars Very soothing.......2007-05-14

Hayley Westenra's Odyssey is a very beautiful CD. If you switch on your walkman and listen to the CD's tracks non-stop, you'll soon feel like you're flying in Heaven. It's very soothing and heavenly. It calms you down, without causing you to feel lonely or sad because you're listening to it in solitary, like other vocal or classical songs do sometimes.

I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested. Quanta Qualia and Ave Maria are my most favourite tracks. Quanta Qualia is pure magic! I really feel as if I'm flying in Heaven when I listen to it.

4 out of 5 stars very good pop singer voice.......2007-05-13

the selections were tasteful and varied. the singer has a very good pop singer voice. i would have liked some voice variation between songs. all were sung in exactly the same style. good singing but without tonal variation the disk tends to be bland. i hope that as she gets more exposure she will vary her voice to make the songs stand out individually instead of letting them blend into one song on the disc. i would rate this 5 stars except for that major fault.

4 out of 5 stars Voice & level head deserve high marks .......2007-04-20

Not only has Hayley Westenra's voice remained "pure", but her good sense and sensibilty has stayed intact when so many similar young performers have gone over the deep end with extreme behavior and disreputable remarks. On this CD Miss Westernra covers a number of songs in her own special style, such as excellent versions of "Prayer", "May It Be" and "Both Sides Now". I hope to hear her renditions of more such tunes, old and new. I would like to hear her sing songs like "Yesterday", "I Still Believe in Love" and All I Know. She has a way with her soaring vocals that never lets the listener down.

5 out of 5 stars Beverly Sills, American Legend: Ave Atque Vale.......2007-07-04

The world is diminished with the news of the death of Beverly Sills. Her impact on American Opera will never be matched. She was an Original, a woman of great beauty, creative intelligence not only in her vocal production, pyrotechniques, and range, but also in her commitment to acting and drama, bringing a far larger audience to the opera houses with both her gifts as an artist and her compassion for those experiencing opera for the first time. Her performances were full of life, uncannily beautiful in singing and deportment, and aided by her own insistence on the use of supertitles above the proscenium arch, a gracious bow to her audiences to draw them into the stories of the works. La Sills had the intelligence to make her final bow on the stage when signs of vocal weakness began to show. Everything she did was form her heart and her brain and her humanity.

Finding a work to call a signature role for her wide repertoire is difficult, but for most of us her creation of Cleopatra as captured in this recording of Handel's 'Giulio Cesare' is a zenith. She sparkles and stuns with her effortless singing and embellishments and she is accompanied by her old friends Norman Treigle, Spiro Malas, Michael Devlin, Maureen Forrester, Beverly Wolff, Dominic Cossa and of course, Julius Rudel who with Sills brought the New York City Opera to importance.

Yes, the recording is old and now dated and now that Handel's jewel is a frequently performed opera in the original style (countertenors, original instrumentation, etc), the performance does sound a bit florid and thick. But Beverly Sills shines brightly and this is the great selfless star we will all remember. Grady Harp, July 07

5 out of 5 stars beverly sill.......2007-05-18

beverly is enchanting as cleopatra. i have started a beverly collection of operas which i am sure will rival my callas collection

5 out of 5 stars Classic performance.......2007-05-13

If you like this opera, this recording is a must have. Good sound quality, amazing performance. Yes, this is one of the productions that launched Beverly Sills' career. I have yet to see or hear a performance of Cleopatra that comes close.

4 out of 5 stars Fine performances, flawed recording quality.......2007-05-05

The women steal the show here--Forrester's voice lush and gorgeous, Sills at her mindblowing coloratura best. I imagine Treigle's booming, grainy voice was powerful on stage, but at times it sounds coarse and a bit wobbly here in the more difficult passages. All in all this is a fine disc, true to Handel without period instrument nonsense, though the recording quality is bad for 1967 (distortion on high notes and forte voice passages), when EMI and Decca and DG were turning out superb sounding operas on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars Handel and Scarlatti.......2006-09-26

Handel's muse is consistently extroverted in contrast with the more sensitive Alessandro Scarlatti and not just because of greater reliance on choruses and brass. His Giulio Cesare in Egitto dates 1724, three years after Scarlatti's Griselda. The two styles are well suited to Boccaccio's "Griselda," on the one hand, and the famous story of Caesar and Cleopatra on the other. The two operas are alike in that both feature grieving wives. "Patient Griselda" is put to a frightful series of tests by her husband. Handel's Cornelia is a grieving widow bent on avenging the death of her husband Pompey at the hands of the Hellenic-Egyptian tyrant Ptolemy. Bass-baritone Norman Treigle is brilliant as Caesar as he is as Mephistopheles in Boito's Mefistofele. Against the background of Caesar's powerful rhetoric and Beverly Sills' Cleopatra, Cornelia's state of grief is about as sensitive as Handel's operatic muse ever becomes, especially in "Priva son d'ogni conforto"-- "I am deprived of all consolation." It is interesting to compare that aria with Griselda's "Mi rivedi, o selva ombrosa" where she confesses her fallen state from a queen to a "despised shepherdess." Cornelia's aria, as subdued as it is, remains basically rhetorical as though she were giving a speech about her grief rather than expressing it. Although high rhetoric is a feature of all Baroque opera, Griselda's song strikes me as decidedly more expressive in its humility.
