Editorial Reviews

Showtime's lesbian-themed drama is a more intimate and emotionally complex sexual bookend to the network's successful Queer As Folk franchise. That sensibility is gratifyingly mirrored in the eclectic pop, rock, and folk songs that serve as its musical soul, often fleshing out the show's ensemble characters and plot lines in the bargain. Fourteen highlights from the show's first season are collected here, anchored by the Murmurs' delicate, k. d. lang-produced 90's pop-smart "Genius." (A side note: the Murmurs' Leisha Hailey now plays journalist Alice in the series.) There's often a mood-first, fashion-be-damned sensibility at work, as witnessed by such disparate fare as Ella Fitzgerald's jazz-languor take on Cole Porter's "Lets Do It (Let's Fall in Love)" and the delightful country-kitsch of Connie Francis' "Everybody's Somebody's Fool." There are contributions from veterans (Joan Armatrading's "Weakness In Me") and newcomers (the savory Latina fire of Fantcha's "Sol Ja Camba") alike, as well as such welcome male contributions as Joseph Arthur's "In the Sun" and Rufus Wainwright's nakedly emotional, now iconic cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." --Jerry McCulley

This cool collection of songs should appeal even to those who have little or no interest in the Showtime drama it's tagged to. The first thing you notice listening to the CD is how rare it is to get a compilation entirely focused on female voices. The second is that though the stylistic range is fairly wide--going from Nina Simone to Pink via Fiona Apple and Kelis--there's also a strong sense of consistency throughout because most of the tracks tend to deliver big doses of fun. The best moments are the most unexpected ones: French trio Prototypes's "Je Ne Te Connais Pas" is handclappingly infectious, while Pink bursts out with a full-throated anthem, "Long Way to Happy," that Melissa Etheridge fans will likely enjoy. Best news of all: the widely disliked theme song is nowhere to be heard, though its author, BETTY, contributes the CD closer, "Barnyard." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Love the variety of Music.......2007-05-14

I really enjoy the variety of music on this CD. I've been introduced to new groups and songs by established artists that did not make top 40. Magic Tree, Ride a White Horse, Long Way to Happy, and Living Proof are my favorites. I rediscovered Tori Amos and of course Betty Rocks!

5 out of 5 stars L Tunes CD.......2007-03-31

5 out of 5 stars Betty Rules!.......2007-02-13

I have no idea who Elisabeth Vincentelli is but she has not polled the U.S. on the L Word theme song. My poll of 100 people was 90% loved the theme song and 10% liked it. Hate reviewers that put their opinions in print as fact.

CD is great and if you haven't seen or listened to Betty Rules do yourself and favor and dive into Betty -

I am trying to find the name to a song i heard on the L Word a long time ago. Unfortunately I dont know what episode its from but know it goes on during the closing credits. It has words along the lines, "Shes got a secret lab...". If anyone knows of this song, it would be a great help to me. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Match the music to the episodes with Wikipedia!.......2006-06-10

I see a couple of questions regarding artists of songs in specific episodes. If you want to find a list of the first two seasons' music, including the portion of the episode in which a song appeared, go to the Wikipedia and use the search term "Music from The L Word".

Happy Hunting!

5 out of 5 stars really good stuff!.......2006-03-05

Okay, so I don't remember where all these music come from as related to the show like that reveiwer, I only remember "The Weakness in Me" because it seem to really fit the closing of that scene. But WOW, this CD is kinda cool, and does it matter that it's from the show. It can stand alone by itself as an anthology which begs the question, is there such a thing as gay music versus straight music? The jury is still out on that one, maybe somebody can write a thesis on it. Anyway, this CD is great. It has a little bit of everything. It even managed to squeeze in Connie Francis, Ella Fitzgerald and a mournful Portugese Morma or could be a Fado also. And if you're not a Rufus Wainwright fan, you will be soon after hearing "Hallelujah" And I think this will be the real positive of this CD, turning people on to a lot of artists that wouldn't otherwise be notice but sorely deserving.

3 out of 5 stars very not bad.......2007-04-25

I went on a Netflix L-Word marathon and then wanted some of the music from the show. Sad to say, the music is not too interesting -- at least not as much as it was when it accompanied the show.

1 out of 5 stars Mistaken.......2006-07-03

I thought I was purchasing the DVD, not CD. It's only the music - I wanted to see the shows.

4 out of 5 stars a player staple, as usual...........2006-03-30

Like the previous two season soundtracks, the third delivers another great combination of heart-thumping girl grunge and nostalgic floating ballads.

I originally purchased this double-disc pack to get Esthero's "I Drive Alone" [Shane/Cheri Jaffy pool scene] but was more impressed with some of the other tracks.

Deliciously surprising was the inclusion of "Whether You Fall" by Tracy Bonham, the first of two contributions made on her behalf. "Don't Look Back" by Telepopmusik is a fantastic lyrically-motivated ambient turn, and the D'Angelo tune is the one I throw on when I'm getting ready to head out on the town.

Other favorites: "The Naughty Song" by Cory Lee is upbeat and kinky -- same with the Catlow tune.

Bottom line, this album is always within reach of my CD player -- a great buy for 24 good tracks. Not all are great, (I was disappointed with the Tegan & Sara songs, and the Sleater-Kinney) but overall, a great mix of moody lyrics and pulsing beats.

Wish they would've put some Transientworld tunes on: specifically "Light Bright City."

5 out of 5 stars Still the same..........2006-02-03

The L word soundtracks are amazing, such great CDs filled with very good songs!... and this one's huge (2 CDs!)without a single disappointing song,it is a selection of the best female voices of the year 2005 and maybe 2006.The first CD is the sexy one with pop/rock and a little techno and the second the classy one with indi/jazz and a trip-hop tune by Esthero, one of the best band on that category.Anyway if you loved the two first soundtrack you will love and even more this one.Lesbian mixes are definatly the best even for guys!... loll

Amazon.com

While the soundtrack to the first season of Showtime's lesbian-themed dramatic series set the tone for the show's emotionally-rooted, if ever-eclectic musical sensibility, the choices here often have a more nervy, contemporary edge. Dusty Springfield's `60s blue-eyed soul classic "Just a Little Lovin'" offers an alluring lead in, but quickly fast forwards to the Siouxsie-channeling, retro-new wave spunk of Organ's "Brother," the electrobeat sass of "Playgirl" by Ladytron and Martina Topley-Bird's spare, moody "Ilya." Heart makes a similarly intimate contribution via "No Other Love," while Shawn Colvin's familiar "Sunny Came Home" and Iron & Wine's "Naked As We Came" offer islands of relative calm in the midst of more electric fare like the club-punk of LeTigre's "On the Verge" and slinky, post-modern melodrama of "Where Do I Begin" by Shirley Bassey and awayTEAM. BETTY's alt-pop fueled, snark-smart show theme closes the set, and BETTY also collaborates with Pam Grier on a sexually dizzy cover of "Some Kind of Wonderful." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars just great background music.......2007-06-27

Outstanding, up-to-date background music, with just a touch of lesbian chick. A great collection, and it furthers the cause!

4 out of 5 stars Hot Hot Hot!.......2006-07-06

This CD is hot, like the tv-series and like all those beautiful actresses on the series. Do you need some help imagining Shane or one of the other girls standing next to you in your living room, then just put on this steamy CD. You should check out 'Brother' from the Organ. When I first heard it I thought 'That's Debbie - not on the L word - Harry'. Well, it's not Debbie, but definitely sounds like her. There are some classic romantics, like 'Just a little lovin' by Dusty Springfield. What a steamy voice! Or 'Where do I begin' by Shirley Bassey, with a nice beat. And you can dance as well with 'Playgirl' by Ladytron, 'Mmmnn' by Grandadbob or 'Get on' by Dirtmitts. That sure will get you in the mood for some L. The CD has one flaw, there are three songs by BETTY on this CD and that's one too many. The cost: less diversity. But even still, I think its a CD for a hot party. And remember, on that occasion, we should all be gay and feel sexy! So, why not buy this kinda 'L. inclined' party CD? It's got all the ingredients.

5 out of 5 stars l-word :season 2.......2006-03-12

I bought the 2 cd...aweson..good music makes me thing I'm watching the mover..I watch season 1 and 2 on tv don't have showtime this year..so I will buy season 3..I think it is well done..I love the woman that play the parts they are great...and I like the story line... true down to earth ..you could think they are lesbians thats how good they are... keep up the good work I'm
already to watch season 4-???

5 out of 5 stars Hot GIRLS, Hot SHOW, Hot SOUNDTRACK!.......2006-02-23

This soundtrack is great! I am a huge fan of The L Word and when I heard the music on the show I knew immediately I had to buy the soundtrack. What I enjoy most about this selection is that there are many artists that I don't normally listen to, so it has opened me up to a wide range of genres.

5 out of 5 stars L-Word Soundtrack, so so so good!.......2006-02-23

I am sitting here listening to the L-Word Season 2 soundtrack, and I'm really loving it. This is the version that doesn't have the EZ Girl stuff on it, which I've heard a lot of people don't particularly care for.
The whole CD is mellow, with the highpoints being Betty's "It Girl." It is perfect for a long ride, because it is that music that makes good background noise and will make you sink into your own thoughts.

I love this CD especially because it is mostly women's music, peformed by women and written by women. I recommend this for any indie-chick music fan!!

    Album Description

Produced and composed by ezgirl, this CD of score music from Showtime's #1 hit is a must-have for any fan.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars "0" stars should be an option. .......2006-04-26

EZ girls' score is profoundly awful.
The music from the first season was amazing and it introduced me to a lot of great new artists (Kinnie Starr and Fiest are among the best). So what happened? Where did all the talent go? The music has become laughable...
The saving grace from the second season is the commentary on the "lez boat" episode that was done by the actresses who play Shane, Dana and Alice.
During the theme song, Leisha sings "laughing, crying, breathing, f**king, make this song stop really sucking."
Ilene Chaiken and Betty should really listen to her.
When the actors are tearing apart the music, you know it's gotta be bad...

    1 out of 5 stars Simply horrible.......2006-01-10

The music is simply awful. I enjoyed the CD from the first season (as well as the opening digital theme) and am still reeling from the granola chomping, politically correct, old fashioned and weird theme song from Season 2. NOT hot, NOT cool, NOT fun to listen to. Elizabeth Ziff's negative influence has really hung a job on the musical score- I am left pondering WHY Showtime and Ilene Chaiken have let her run wild with this glob of amateurish and self indulgent effort.

1 out of 5 stars If only the music was good.......2005-12-18

Such a great show, if only the second season had music to match.

    5 out of 5 stars I had my doubts..........2005-06-06

Like many, my original reaction to the new theme song and the radically different score wasn't a positive one at first. As a matter of fact, by the end of the season and up until I got the CD, I was still quite sceptical about it. I was a fool.

I think the reason people have reacted so strongly to ezgirl's unique compositions is exactly that, the fact that they are unique. I love movie and tv scores but quite often, they all resemble each other. ezgirl has been bold enough to do things a little bit differently, much in the same way that "the L word" is different than other shows, and it really works. The theme song, which is actually very catchy, is predominant here with many different versions of it (including the very authentic sounding Klezmer version in Yiddish and the sexy Spanish and French versions - all of which sound very different). ezgirl has combined live instruments (something quite unusual in tv scoring) and funky synthetic sounds as well as samples from the show, her own voice and breath, and there are some surprising contributions by accomplished musicians in their own right (including Jane Siberry).

The originality of this project shows just how much ezgirl has put her heart and soul in this to produce a truly artistic take on television scoring. If I had only one wish, it would be that Ilene Chaiken had recruited her from the start of the show.

1 out of 5 stars Big fan of the show, this "music" ruins it.......2005-05-27

This is an excellent TV show that was hijacked this season by ezgirl (a.k.a. one of the hairy members of BETTY). This cd is her attempt to make creative background music, but really it is just endless ridiculous versions of the awful new theme song of the show. The theme song is incredibly cheesy, and so are the subsequent versions of it. The five star reviews here are probably left by ezgirl, since she is so proud of herself.

This one has sketches & a few songs; will bring up great memories. There is another CD AT THE BALL which is more tunes & songs with a rare sketch where they toured in Britain which I liked better. It has a jazzed up CALL OF THE CUCKOO which is a treat to hear BUT this one is still great stuff!!!

5 out of 5 stars Viv Stanshall's weird mind spin.......2004-09-27

This little gem is really the former Bonzo's very own 'Under Milk Wood', a versatile, hilarious, and hugely inventive gallop through the happenings in the village of Rawlinson, where Sir Henry drinks and roars his way oblivious to terrorise his family and acquaintances. Indeed, by 1980 Sir Henry had much of Viv himself in his make-up - there are other characters here though just as memorably drawn (Florrie, the long-suffering lady wife of Sir H, who dreams of England and pretends she's Boadicia; Philippa, with her Scots brogue and her dentures; Hubert, in his forties and still unusual; Old S, the wrinkled retainer from the West Country; and the camp interior designers, Nice and Tidy; not to mention Reg the most boring man in the village and on and on, dot dot dot ..). My favourite lines? I quite like 'Mummy, my teddy bear's stopped breathing!' and Sir Henry's disparaging opinion of Lady Staines' 'Gorgonzola legs' ('I wouldn't have even liked to have been the *first* man ...').

Steve Winwood helps out in the musical bits alongside a small gaggle of others, although the vast majority of the musical accompaniments you hear are Vivian alone, and all the vocals are his. A garbled plot from a scrambled brain this CD may be, but it is truly excellent and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Limp hand squids... prepare for whacks..........2002-03-08

It is almost inconceivable that one person could have crafted this work of genius, yet Stanshall did. Rawlinson is one of the few recorded pieces in which virtually every line is indispensible. Even Sir Henry's throw away expressions such as "Filth Hounds of Hades", "God's teeth and trousers" and "God's turban and tutu" carry with them all the weight of the hekau or Power Words of the ancient cultures.

I had the good fortune to catch the Bonzos farewell tour, and even for a battle-hardened Bonzo Dog nut such as myself, Rawlinson was a revelation. The richness and uniqueness of the many colourful characters gives tremendous depth to this hilarious creation from the mind of the late and truly great Viv Stanshall.

No review, however detailed, could possibly do justice to this complex masterpiece, although George Thomas Parsons came dang close. I shall merely humbly beseech you to buy it on trust. One word of caution, however... If you are an asthmatic, you MUST have a Salbutamol inhaler at the ready!

    Blast this leg, by cracky...

    5 out of 5 stars I laughed till I cried.......2000-12-20

One of the funniest recordings I have ever heard. Outrageous lampoon of the British upper crust. Classic Vivian Stanshall, which remains fresh even after hearing it dozens of times. I especially like the bit about the garden gnomes (For any Americans who may listen to this part and be bemused. Think modelling clay when you hear the word "Plasticine"!)

    5 out of 5 stars I Keep Playing It.......2000-11-14

Vivian Stanshall serves a feast for the ears that I seem to need to hear over and over again. Each listening deepens the appreciation of the poetry and humor of the badly-missed Bonzo. If you Laughed at "Rawlinson End" from the final Bonzo Dog Band album you will surely enjoy this rich work as well.

5 out of 5 stars Vivian Stanshall is GOD!.......2000-06-19

Vivian Stanshall "Sir Henry At Rawlinson End" Started as a track on the Bonzo Dog Band's final album Let's Make Up and Be Friendly from `72, later Vivian extended the concept a bit through a series of appearances on John Peel's radio program. In `78 He recorded this full length album dedicated to Sir Henry the Lord of Rawlinson End, and his moribund clan, which inspired the film starring the late Trevor Howard and Stanshall himself as Sir Henry (if you can find a video let me know, I have looked high and low.), Trevor said it was his favorite film performance. In `83 he recorded Sir Henry at Ndidi's Kraal, which takes our titular "hero" on an incredibly disgusting and hilarious safari. Sir Henry At Rawlinson End is a series of extended narrative descriptions in some of the most hallucinatorily delirious celebrations of the English language this side of Mervyn Peake, intermixed with songs sung from the POV's of the extremely weird cast of characters. Taking the concept of the English eccentric to it's illogical extreme, we're taken inside the minds and lives of an extended family of completely disfunctional lunatics. Great short stories and songs all delivered by one of the most thoroughly British voices and visions ever recorded, with tasty multi-instrumental assistance from his pal Steve Winwood (Stanshall returned the favor by writing lyrics to several songs for Winwood).

    5 out of 5 stars Very Funny!.......2007-02-18

It's amazing to me how, when this was recorded, during the early to mid-sixties, the stereo recording quality was so exceptional. George Martin used to produce the Goon Shows before he became a part of the Beatles, and Peter Sellers was a genius. Somewhere in there they made an exceptionally clever, masterfully done, and truly very funny comedic album. Even though some of the paradies are dated, every track is still very, very funny.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic Sellers.......2002-03-03

Some tracks are a bit dated, but others are timeless excellence. No-one covers the BEATLES like Peter Sellers! Worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars A fine example of Sellers' brilliance!.......2001-01-03

The songs and sketches of this disc showcase Peter Sellers' vast range of vocal characterizations, from "Goon Show" regulars Bluebottle and Willum "Mate" Cobblers, to Dr. Strangelove, to a dead-on impression of Laurence Olivier as Richard III. Included on this disc are Sellers' twisted takes on "Hard Day's Night," "Can't Buy Me Love," "All the Things You Are," "Wouldn't It Be Loverly?" and Purcell's "Trumpet Voluntary." Hearing Bluebottle sing "Unchained Melody" was worth the price of the disc alone.

The only thing holding me back to four stars was the lack of any liner notes. Apart from copyright dates on the individual tracks, there is nothing here to tell us anything about the history of these recordings. Still, Sellers fans should enjoy this disc immensely.
