James Bond themes tend to be just as memorable as their movie counterparts and, to a certain extent, just as time sensitive. While many fans can remember the Monty Norman Orchestra's steamy Dr. No theme or Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger," how many of us remember Rita Coolidge's dated "All Time High" from Octopussy or A-Ha's theme from The Living Daylights? Yes, just as we all have our favorite Bonds, we all have our favorite eras of Bond movie music. But surprisingly, whether they're New Wave, soul, or just Euro-pop inspired, most are still worth hearing. There are some real gems on this compilation: On Her Majesty's Secret Service's "We Have All the Time in the World" by Louis Armstrong, the Thunderball theme sung by Tom Jones, and the spunky theme to The Man With the Golden Gun by Lulu. everything I had both wanted and expected.......2007-03-13

I am thoroughly satisfied with this CD--it is everything I had both wanted and expected. Its premise is simple: get all the theme songs from the James Bond films on one disc. This is a quote-unquote official release, so it neglects "Never Say Never Again," and the unofficial odd-jobs associated with 007. Although it was released in 2002, for some reason it lacks the Razzie-winning "Die Another Day," which was released that year. And since it was released in 2002, don't expect to find "You know My Name" from "Casino Royale."

This collection definitely gets Five Stars for including "We Have All the Time In The World." Since this was in Lazenby's solo, we seldom hear it; yet it is one of the best songs to come out of the franchise.

Like I said, this CD is everything I expected, down to the liner notes. I have only two criticisms. First, the songs are not chronological, so we miss the evolution from the early brassy Rat Pack themes to the toned-down anthems epitomized by "For Your Eyes Only" and then on to the techno/hip-hop lite of the later films. Arraigned the way they are, you get a better overall presentation. Either way you arrange the tracks, you will always have shuffle.

The second is more of a criticism of the franchise as opposed to the CD (have I mentioned how well I liked the product?). Included are two remixes of the James Bond Dr. No Theme--from Moby and Parodi/Fair. Now a remix by definition is just the same music with an underlaying drum machine, and it is done solely to be played at dance clubs and those annoying subwoofers on wheels--and nothing more. I think this was done to keep up the gala spirit of the film, and also to revamp the franchise for younger audiences

The problem is that there was nothing wrong with the franchise--the six year hiatus was due to a legal quagmire and the geopolitical shake up associated with the end of the Cold War. So doing remixes like these really do not contribute to the Bond experience. Personally, I thought they were both condescending and obvious.

(Then again, where else would you put them?)

So other than these two critiques, I happily recommend this disc for the Bond fan, and for the pleasant memories this music will bring.

A CD No James Bond Fan Should Be Without........2007-01-13

As someone who has been a huge James Bond since before he could walk, you can bet I love every aspect of the films, including the music. Many of the theme songs to the films are classics, while the ones that have slipped under the radar remain awesome underrated numbers.

In 1992, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of 1962's "Dr. No", the 2 cd "The Best Of James Bond" was released. Itr included all the theme songs for the movies from 1962's "Dr. No" up to 1989's "License To Kill", as well as a second disc of rarities.

This is an excellent compilation that all 007 fans must have in their collection. You get all the classic Bond themes, such as Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger", Paul McCartney & Wings' "Live And Let Die", Carly Simon's "Nobody Does It Better", Sheena Easton's "For Your Eyes Only", and Duran Duran'a "A View To A Kill", as well as some lesser heard but equally great songs, such as Nancy Sinatra's luscious theme for "You Only Live Twice", Bassey's sexy rendering of "Diamonds Are Forever" and her mysterious, sweet "Moonraker", Lulu's thrilling "The Man With The Golden Gun", Rita Coolidge's glorious "All Time High", and a-ha's excellent "The Living Daylights". There are a few rough spots (Tom Jones' over the top "Thunderball" and Gladys Knight's awful "License To Kill"), but other than that, it's a nearly flawless compilation.

The second disc is a great treat for hardcore Bond fans. For starters, you get several radio spots for "You Only Live Twice", "Thunderball" and "Live And Let Die", some great instrumental scores, two different recordings of the scrapped "Thunderball" theme song "Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (sung by Dionne Warwick and Shirley Bassey, respectively), Anthony Newley's boring but coll to have early demo of "Goldfinger", and best of all, Louis Armstrong's absolutely beautiful "We Have All The Time In The World", one of the loveliest songs in music.

It's true that there were Bond films made after 1992 (five to be exact). But as far as their theme songs go, only Tina Turner's theme for "Goldeneye" and Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" (from the recent "Casino Royale"), are worth having. My advice is to get this excellent two cd and download the 2 later numnbers. Then, you will truly have all the best of James Bond.

Far Away... So Close..!.......2006-02-12

Over the years I've come to know and enjoy just about all of the Bond themes-- the catchy, the outstanding and the um, well, regrettable-- and this CD offers a nice enough selection.

Included here are nearly all of my personal faves: the poignant "We Have All the Time In the World" from the great Louis Armstrong, Matt Munro's yearning, romantic "From Russia With Love," a sweetly seductive Nancy Sinatra crooning "You Only Live Twice" and powerhouse personal best performances from Tom Jones, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney and that electrifying diva of high melodrama, Shirley Bassey (unforgettable as she alternately coos and snarls her way through the witty, cynical "Diamonds Are Forever").

Alas, a few things are missing that keeps me from giving this compilation a 5 star rating-- I would have appreciated the inclusion of "The World Is Not Enough" by Garbage-- not quite first-rate as Bond themes go perhaps, but I like it anyway.

And where where where WHERE is the sensual, sensational "Never Say Never Again" which, all you Bond aficionados will recall, was sung over the derring-do opening credits of the 1983 film of the same name by the great Lani Hall?? (If you're drawing a blank with that name, you can find her immortal vocals on almost all of those classic "Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66" and "Brazil '67" albums.)

I can't find this particular Bond theme ANYWHERE on any compilation--was there even a soundtrack release for NSNA? Are copyright issues preventing the track's inclusion with all of the other Bond themes? Does anyone out there know where this splendid recording can be found?

The theme songs, along with the always imaginative opening sequences that accompany them, have been an essential part of the cultural icon that is 007 for the past four decades, and often help distinguish between otherwise barely distinguishable movies. This CD is the most extensive collection of Bond themes currently available, covering every movie from Dr. No (1963) to Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), i.e. 35 years of Bond, which means the only ones missing are Garbage's forgettable 'The World is Not Enough' and Madonna's awful 'Die Another Day', for the lack of which it is none the poorer.

This anthology of Bond themes features some of the leading recording artists of the last four decades, from Shirley Bassey to Tom Jones to Duran Duran to Sheryl Crowe; and even if many of the tracks here sound remarkably dated, they still serve as a fascinating history of a unique phenomenon in 20th century music. Most of the tracks here, though, are wonderful pieces of music in their own right, some powerful and effective, others simply smelling of sweet nostalgia. The songs are all bombastic, melodramatic, full of the kind of blistering wall-of-sound orchestrations and emotional vocals that are an inseparable part of Bond's universe of martinis, girls and guns; but each artist put into it something of their own, be it Bassey's jazzy and seductive 'Goldfinger', Nancy Sinatra's sweet 'You Only Live Twice', Duran Duran's new-wave 'A View to a Kill' or Tina Turner's soulful 'Golden Eye' (composed, in fact, by U2's Bono and The Edge); and they give a fantastic account of how much Bond - and more than that, music and culture as a whole - changed over the last forty years.

Other than Bassey's entries - 'Diamonds Are Forever', 'Moonraker' and 'Goldfinger' - probably the single best known Bond theme and a prototype to the others - and the ones already mentioned above, standout tracks include Tom Jones's blistering, Las Vegas 'Thunderball'; Paul McCartney's 'Live and Let Die', one of the most powerful and darkest of Bond themes, and also one of Paul's best songs; Lulu's energetic and powerful 'The Man With the Golden Gun'; and also Louis Armstrong's 'We Have All the Time in the World', a nearly forgotten gem, one of the best of the Bond songs, which was unfortunately featured in the worst, least successful of Bond films, 'In Her Majesty's Secret Service'. Also among the best tracks in the collection are the ones from the first two Pierce Brosnan films, Turner's 'Golden Eye' and Sheryl Crowe's 'Tomorrow Never Dies'. The latter is in fact one of the best and best-produced of all the Bond themes, a perfect image of Bond's grace, style and strength, and is also a high point in the singer's celebrated career.

The Bond themes are a fascinating cultural phenomenon and the anthology CD is a great one to own. This is the best one around, and it's only one CD unlike some others that stretch out to two with some unnecessary remixes and such to get a few more bucks out of you, so it's your best bet. Well recommended.

James Bond is still , one of the most representative icons of our post industrial world . He represents an icon , a modern mythical figure .
The soundtracks in the most of those films became fundamental part of the irresistible charm of 007 as well for us to admire the supreme Goddess as well as the female audience who found in every generation the ideal type .
This is an admirable compilation who goes from Goldfinger Shirley Bassey until Tomorrow never dies with the talented singer Sheryl Crow .
The best song in the CD? It depends from you . To me Nobody does it better is the jewel of the crown , but nevertheless From Russia with love is a nostalgic piece , the saddest is We have all the time in the world with the unforgettable Satchmo in one of his last recordings .
You only live twice threw to Nancy Sinatra to the stardom after being recorded Something stupid a song for two voices with her father .
The man with the golden arm with Lulu is an excelent theme . She was the same lovely girl that won with To sir with love . Paul Mac Cartney and the Wings with Live and let die . But there are themes for every special taste , all of them sealed with the unmistakeable rapport and touch of class who James Bond signifies .

This disk contains all the Bond themes until Tomorrow Never Dies. The best songs are the latest, but some of the old ones are good too. It's just that the newest songs that are The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day aren't on this disk.

WHO COULDN'T LOVE THIS CD?????????.......2002-06-08

Any CD that has Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger", Carly Simon singing "Nobody Does it Better", and Tina Turner singing "GoldenEye" is worth listening to. We have all of the great James Bond themes, and every one is perfect in its own way. From "A View to a Kill" to "Live and let Die" to "You only live Twice" to "The Man with the Golden Gun", this CD is nothing but a collection of wonderful Bond hits.

A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

Nice set, though strangely arranged.......2006-07-30

Released in 1992, this has themes from each of the Bonds up thru 1989's License To Kill. (So nothing from any of the Pierce Brosnan films.) What's great about this collection is its completeness. They find space to include a couple of the fine John Barry instrumentals: the wonderful theme from On Her Majesty's Secret Service, and a characteristic theme from From Russia With Love which you'll recognize the second you hear it. (Frankly I might buy this disk for the On Her Majesty's Secret Service theme alone.) There's also a Dionne Warwick song from Thunderball, which previously had not appeared on CD.

What's weird about this collection is that the tracks are not in chronological order. Jarring. For my own use I take these tracks and re-burn them onto a CD in chrono order. I don't understand what the producers were thinking when they set the track order of this collection.

But it's a good to have these tracks. It's a nice set.

The Best Of James Bond: 30th Anniversary Collection.......2005-07-01

This CD was really awesome. First off, any Bond fanatic should have this CD because it contains only the essentials of the Bond themes (the first 16 movies). Anyway, the CD was great to listen to because it sparked so many memories. All the tracks were great to listen to except for track 5 which I did not like so much. Even though I did not like that song, it did not spoil the fun. As I said, the CD only contains the themes from Dr. No all the way through License To Kill. However it does not have the songs for Goldenye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day. While listening to this CD, you will also see how much Mr. Bond has progressed in over 40 years. It is actually really amazing. The front cover is actually a cool booklet when you open it up. It has some information on how all the Bond movies came about, and how good they were. It also discussed the different people that played the role of James Bond, and of course about the successes of the theme songs. It was really interesting to read, and you might learn a thing or two as well. In the end, this was a tidy CD and satisfies your needs nicely for any Bond fanatic that just wants the theme songs and not that other crap in the limited edition. Should be in your library if you like this music.

Best (1 disc!) CD for the casual Bond fan.......2004-11-19

This collection is much better than that over-priced 2 disk set (same name), and it gives you the hits only. Standout tracks are Carly Simon's Nobody Does It Better (isn't that fade out fantastic?), and A-HA's The Living Daylights (I still can't understand the lyrics: "comes the morning and the candlelights fade away or comes the morning and the headlights fade in rain?!?") Anyway, that's a cool song, but my all time favorite would have to be Paul McCartney & the Wings "Live and Let Die." Its a great rock/reggae blast, and makes you feel like James Bond.

Bond For All Time.......2004-07-04

I'm not a fan of the James Boond films, but there is no denying that the series has some of the best theme songs ever. This CD collects all of them up to and including 1989s "License To Kill". From rock to camp to touching ballads and many other genres this CD covers many bases. There is something for everyone on this CD. My only complaint is that the tracks aren't in chronoligical order. But the CD booklet does give a nice summary of each film and a bit of it's histroy with is a very welcome touch for people like me who know very little about the movies.

Highly recommended for 007 fans, soundtrack buffs and those who just enjoy great music.

Great, BUT..........2001-10-01

EVERY song here, in one way or another, is an all-time classic. This package includes the 007 themes from DR. NO (1962) to LICENSE TO KILL (1989). However, I'd suggest skipping this seemingly incredible comp and going instead for the 2-CD set of the SAME NAME! Disc 1 on that contains the 16 themes in chronological sequence (which this, strangely, doesn't), while Disc 2 contains a LOT of previously-unreleased tracks that can be found nowhere else.

As these types of CDs go this is average at best. I reluctantly admit that I did like the James Bond Theme (Extended Version) and James Bond Theme (Dance Version). My actual opinion of this product is that the cover design and artwork far exceeds the music. You may consider it if you are a James Bond collector. If you truly want the James Bond music you hear in the films, I recommended starting with the soundtrack recordings.

Okay. This is NOT the original Best of Bond CD. This is CD is by some orchestra/singing group. Wasted a few dollars. Might as well just get the real thing.
