You've got to credit Kevin Spacey for sheer gumption: not only did he choose to direct a biopic about Bobby Darin (not the hippest of 1960s singers), but he also decided to star in it despite the fact that he was in his midforties and Darin died at 37. As if this weren't enough, unlike Jamie Foxx in Ray, Spacey performs all the songs himself. The hard-driving "Hello Young Lovers" starts off the album with a bang, the actor working with the big band with casual ease. While Darin is now best known for his swinging "Mack the Knife" and his adaptation of Charles Trenet's "La Mer" ("Beyond the Sea"), he also explored folk and scored with the teeny-bopperish "Splish Splash." Spacey acquits himself honorably in all these genres, though he's best when he swings hard--his yelpy "Splish Splash" lacks the required levity. No matter what you think of the film itself, what we hear on this album is an actor who wouldn't be out of place in a Broadway musical. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Product Description
Among only a handful of entertainers who bridged the gap between '50s rock fans and their Sinatra-loving parents, Bronx-born pop legend Bobby Darin's life and career were short but extraordinary. In 1959 the singer/composer rocketed to stardom with 2 Grammy Awards-Best New Artist and Record of the Year for the #1 smash "Mack the Knife." His other signature smash provides the title for this biopic chronicling his genre-defying music, tempestuous marriage to starlet Sandra Dee, and untimely death at age 37-in 1973-from a heart defect acquired during a childhood illness. Kate Bosworth stars as Dee, and Darin is brought to life by Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey, who also directed the film and sings 18 of the artist's classic hits.

5 out of 5 stars Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.......2007-05-25

This might be heresy, but Kevin Spacey is a better singer than Bobby Darin!

5 out of 5 stars Beyond The Sea Audio CD.......2007-03-09

Very nice. I knew after seeing the movie I'd want the soundtrack. The production work is fantastic!

I thought the cd was awesome. Kevin did Bobby proud!

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Bobby Darin.......2006-08-21

For those who enjoyed the movie "Beyond the Sea", which tells the life story of Bobby Darin, this will be a "must have" CD. Spacey does a surprisingly good job of these Bobby Darin hits, and the band really kicks. Spacey's voice is warm and the phrasing owes a lot to the original Darin versions. Fo those who haven't seen the movie, here's a collection of standards that will entertain. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Bobby Darin's music relived.......2006-07-15

The music is in sharp contrast to our contemporary offerings and a listener needs to make adjustments, allowing that this is the music of more than 40 years ago.
In particular the music backing is the first thing that tells us that this is 'different' music.
But it is of course enjoyable because of the Bobby Darin touch faithfully recorded by Kevin Spacey.
For maximum enjoyment, one should see the movie!

Will it become another rich Newman family tradition? Picking up the baton his cousin Randy carried so skillfully on Disney/Pixar's four previous pioneering computer animation features, composer Thomas Newman was undaunted, bringing his own highly original scoring sensibility to the studio's latest digital daydream--an effort that's also the younger Newman's own debut score for an animated feature. Tom's consistently unique approach to matters of rhythm and percussion are as forceful and inventive as ever in this undersea adventure, while his passages for orchestra resonate with the same quintessentially American pastoral melancholy his songwriting cousin has long employed in his work. The result is dynamic, diverse, and uniquely personal as any modern animated feature. Especially rewarding are the jazz/exotica/kitsch flourishes Newman playfully throws into the mix, diffusing his ever nervous rhythms with unexpected, quirky colorations. It's a must for any fan of Newman's evocative canon. Contemporary crooner Robbie Williams rounds out proceedings with a faithful, jazzy take on Bobby Darin's classic "Beyond the Sea." --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-04-05

Great cd! Have used in the classroom and the kids loved it.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for..........2007-03-10

I was pretty disappointed by this. I was looking for songs that my kids could sing and dance to. This just was not it!! It's too bad, its one of my daughter's favorite movies.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Nemo.......2007-01-09

I love this CD. I listen to it every night when I'm falling asleep. :-)

5 out of 5 stars "Finding Nemo" soundtrack, music by Thomas Newman.......2006-08-19

A fabulous musical experience, even if you have not seen the movie. Newman uses the whole orchestra and more, with rich undertones and theme notes for each character in the story. I love the way it is presented in chronological order per movie-story-line. I listen to it while driving, making a very soothing drive for me. A great composition, you can just totally envision exactly where the story-line is going. Conjures up the clever dialogue amongst the characters while listening. Should make great company for the car back seat for small kids. Liner notes include photo I.D. of all the main characters.

3 out of 5 stars What happened???.......2005-09-18

Oh, MAN. I love the music from this movie, especially when Nemo is watching the ocean go by when on the back of Mr. Ray. The question is, what happened? Why are the tracks only about a minute long? I was expecting some nice, sweeping score, and we get a snippet. I was sorely disappointed by that.

That being said, the snippets that are on this CD are lush, full-bodied, and outright beautiful. Just wish they were longer. (I DID enjoy "Somewhere Beyond the Sea" at the end, though.)

Scored by Lucio Godoy, the album consists of finely crafted music that captures the essence and emotion of the film directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa. Traditional Spanish guitars, wind instruments and reoccurring melodies accompany the desperate lives that tell this story beginning in utter loss and ending in complete hope and acceptance. 20 tracks including the instrumental & vocal performances of 'On The Other Side Of The World' by Tom Waits.
