5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko UK Import : BUY IT!!!.......2007-05-12

Just bought this 2 CD import item. Was it costly? Sure: approx. $25. BUT, given that I nearly paid $20 for the US version which DOES NOT include the first CD, it was well worth it.
Delivery: SURPRISINGLY SUPER-FAST by USPS (it only took two or three days standard shipping)
Condition: Still wrapped in plastic.
Music: *tee hee* If you watched the movie, then you know what the music will sound like: it's the movie soundtrack (you know, the awesome soundtrack that both reminds the viewer of the 80's and also creates a haunting backdrop for the movie's themes). Typically here in the US that means only one or two of the good songs and the rest is the score. The UK version? ALL of the good songs and the entire score (that's why it's 2 discs).
Bad part? Not offered in US retail stores (i.e. you can only buy this online or in an Import CD store.

5 out of 5 stars Mad World - the one you are looking for.......2007-01-19

It's here, two versions of Mad World by Michael Andrews, lovely piano intro and Neil Young type vocals. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars It took 'em long enough, but it was worth the wait!.......2006-11-06

My friends and I have been waiting for this for years--finally, the real 80's music soundtrack for Donnie Darko, arguably one of the best soundtracks out there!

Probably the only negative comment I have is that they included the music from the motivational videos, something that I could have done without.

Thank you for putting this soundtrack out!!

4 out of 5 stars Donhnie Darko Import Soundtrack well done.......2006-08-24

The import edition of the Donnie Darko soundtrack is two discs. One is the actual pop songs, and some classical works, which are all very good and includes the remake of Tears for Fears "Mad World." The second disc is the instrumental score, with two versions of "Mad World," included as well. The instrumental score is very dark and omenous, and the two disc set is a nice collectible piece of music that I highly reccommend. The price is a bit high, at over $30, but if you are any type of a fan of the movie, or a soundtrack collector, this album is for you.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-08-10

i wish i could have bought just disc one... because disc two is mostly the instrumental stuff, which is excellent, but i don't really plan on listening to it over and over. disc one is good, although there are a few songs i skip through.

5 out of 5 stars Donnie Darko.......2007-07-03

I was drawn to buy this CD because of hearing Michael's arrangement and Gary Jules rendition of "Mad World" which was originally recorded by Tears for Fears way back when. I glad I did. The music was written as the underscore for a Science Fiction movie by the same name and now I really want to see this film. The music is other worldly, ethereal and strange in a good way!

2 out of 5 stars just wanted "mad world".......2007-01-09

loved the mad world track from the Gears of War video game. was hoping the rest of the album was as cool, but it is all instrumentals. a little disappointing, i must admit.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Jules' remake of Mad World is superb!.......2007-01-06

Gary Jules' remake of this great past favorite (Mad World) is superb! The accompanying tracks on this album are not my style, but I didn't buy this for the other tracks. For that I feel this score is quite impressive.

2 out of 5 stars Liked only one cut.......2007-01-04

I bought this CD for the song "Mad World". Unfortunately it was the only one I liked, but I've spent more money on dumber things.

4 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and all-around cool........2006-06-05

Michael Andrews is one of today's best composers. His score for the little-known sci-fi flick "Cypher" was brilliant, and although his music in Donnie Darko is never quite as good (after all, DD was one of his first real scoring jobs), it is a somber, weird, sometimes beautiful album.
Andrews uses many bizarre non-musical instruments and female vocals to great effect, and creates an ambient, sad world that works regardless of your having seen the film.
His song "Mad World" is one of the saddest and most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
The disk isn't very long--just a little over thirty-seven minutes as I recall. But definitely recommended.

From Amazon.co.uk

San Diego based singer-songwriter Gary Jules was brought to the world's attention with his haunting cover of Tears for Fears' "Mad World", but Trading Snakeoil for Wolf Tickets may surprise fans expecting more of the same. There is a strong sense of West Coast country-tinged folk, with pop influences drawn from the Byrds, intelligent prose from Simon & Garfunkel and a velvety drawl from somewhere between James Taylor and JJ Cale. The plucked guitar of "No Poetry" is as beautiful as anything Taylor has produced; it could be perceived as derivative but Jules is expressing his song in the most appropriate way, and it fits the melody perfectly. The abbreviated "DTLA" ("Down Town Los Angeles") is more of an up-tempo number introduced by an analogue drum machine that swaggers in a country fashion befitting the fond imagery in the lyrics. The rest of the album follows a similar path except for the Michael Andrews collaboration "Mad World", which sits awkwardly at the end. Having the big single so far removed from the rest of the songs may seem risky but Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets has enough merit without "Mad World" to show Jules is no one-hit wonder. --David Trueman

4 out of 5 stars This is the GEARS OF WAR song........2006-11-16

Yep, you finally found the song that is in the gears of war commercial. I'm sure you had to search for it like me. It's called Mad World and is originally by tears for fears. Although this version is better, you probably wont take to the rest of the cd. The reviewer who said he sounds like simon and garfunkle is absolutely correct. It does. I just ain't into that kind of stuff, and expected the cd to be heavier than that. I'm not saying its bad by any means, just not my cup of coffee. So, you've got some choices. This song was put out on two seperate singles. One with a blue cover, and one with a red cover. The one with the blue cover is this version, the one with the red cover ain't so good. (GO BLUE). You can also get the song on the Donnie Darko movie soundtrack, which is what I'd recommend. That way you can hear more styles of music and maybe find other artists you might enjoy. Anyway, the song Mad World is a great song and I have to give it up to Mr. Jules for singing it, but the rest of this cd is not even close to the style of that one song and you're better off with the soundtrack. Hope this helps you.

4 out of 5 stars Gary Jules..........2006-05-10

Gary Jules took me by surprise with the "Mad World" cover--and while the whole CD feels different from that single song, all of it is wonderful. I also enjoy Simon & Garfunkel, and though Gary Jules sounds a lot like them, he still has his distinct merits from the group. Enjoyable lyrics and calming music. If you're this type of person, then this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent singer-songwriter, lyric-driven music.......2006-02-17

The main review hits the nail on the head. Including the "mad world" cover as the hit song when the rest of the album is very different was a risk. And the negative reviews to be found here, as well as Gary Jules continued presence outside the mainstream, reflect that is was a rather miscalculated risk. He is very underrated and probably would be as popular as Jack Johnson with a little more marketing and focus on pop in his music. Nevertheless, who cares about how popular he is or isn't?! He's an awesome lyricist and a formidable crafter of song. If you're not just into the Top20, and you're into folky stuff, this is your next favorite album.

4 out of 5 stars haunting music and lyrics.......2005-10-07

Gary Jules has created an especially haunting selection. The album inspired me to hear him live in San Francisco at the Inderpendent. Very impressed with his style and sound. His Darko soundtrack is equally fantastic. Highly recommend them both.

4 out of 5 stars great songwriter.......2005-10-03

Ok, the version of Mad World is a great re-make of the Tears for Fears song, but Gary Jules is a great songwriter in his own right and his songs here are a testimonial to that. There are some great tracks on this disk. If you're a fan of singer-songwriters, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars Just love the kids.......2006-12-23

I was the vocal coach for the kids in this movie and I just love them both. A brilliant piece of work taken from an unusual position.

5 out of 5 stars my life wouldn't be the same without this album........2006-10-21

i'm not one to go and buy soundtracks of movies, but something really stuck out about this soundtrack to me. I change music moods almost every other day so my ipod music list is always changing but, i can tell you one album that has never left my ipod, is this album. It's my everyday music, it's music i walk my dogs in the park to, wait for the 20 bus to, walk to work type of music. It's the music i put on at home and relax to or cleaning. It's my in love with life music.

i would highly suggest this music if you are one that escapes through music. once you put on your headphones all the noises of the city disappear and the park turns into something magical, life turns into something magical when i listen to this album!!!

The World will be a better place when movies like this start to be showed in Schools and churches.

Everybody suffer. Every person struggles to scape unhappiness and isolation. And when communication doesn't happen through openness, trust and affection, some kind of monster inside is awaken hungry for acts of transgression.

Life and freedom will happen, disregarding repression and fear. And repression and fear will make life, the monster, voracious and brutal.

Watching this movie is like watching somebody eating raw meat or trash. What is not a crime, but almost is, for being so distant of how humans are expected to live. It's uncomfortable to look at, but if you really see is enlightening.

One may easily fall in the trap of living as homeless in one's own home. Because what makes a home is affection, and if there is no affection, there is no home, in the end, no human, no life. And everything comes down to s**t, to poison, to ")) <>(( .forever" This is all the math own needs to know.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, and Great SoundTrack!!.......2005-09-19

The movie was simply wonderful and I reccommend that you go and see it, I saw it 3 times; and then came to the conclusion at the rate I was paying to see the movie I could just wait and purchase the movie and watch it all the time.

The Soundtrack fit perfectly with the storyline, and reactions in the movie and the emotions of the characters. The music is very inspiring and very indie.

I def. agree with the first reviewer that this music is something good to listen to when your writing or doing something creative.

It's def. good mellow music, and I def. think I'm burning a hole in my CD because I've been listening to it so much.

"When I was little I had a theory that you should draw a picture using all the colors except yellow, making it as good as you could, and then, finally, after giving up, you should add yellow. And yellow had the magical property of instantly making everything come alive, it was light itself, and thus the picture came into being. Mike Andrews' score was the yellow for this movie." - Miranda July, May 7, 2005

FOREVER

As I sat in the theatre watching Me and You and Everyone We Know, I was instantly fascinated by the wistful sounding score delivered by Mike Andrews in the opening minutes of the film. Andrews, of course, is the same musician responsible for the equally great Donnie Darko soundtrack from several years back. Throughout the 90 minutes of Me and You and Everyone We Know, he delivers patches of fragile sounds that enhance the quirkiness of Miranda July's direction, imagery, and dialogue, and it's quite possibly one of the best score/cinematic combinations in several years.

In the same way Sofia Coppola improved Lost in Translation with her stellar music choices, Andrews, along with help from July, has followed suit with compositions that don't compete, but rather enhance the quality of the film. Since Andrews' music is so subdued, it never really forces its way onto the viewer. But while listening to the soundtrack in the car or at home, it becomes a much different affair. There is a gift of elation that presents itself to the every day tedium of life and a sense of careless daydream that we could all certainly use.

"The Opening" begins with dialogue from the film, spoken by Miranda July. It's a glimpse into the quirky behavior that takes place in the film with July's character, Christine Jesperson, having a fictitious conversation with her imaginary lover. As the conversation develops, the song opens up with the first moments of Andrews' minimal electronic contributions. The gallop of subtle drum beats with the interaction of pensive sounding keyboards is the modus operandi for this and the rest of Andrews' songs.

There are a few guest appearances on the soundtrack, such as the often overlooked Cody Chesnutt. Along with Chesnutt, Spiritualized and Virginia Astley also have their brief appearance. Chesnutt's "5 On a Joyride" is the obvious favorite of the three, while "Any Way That You Want Me" from Spiritualized is also a very welcome addition to the non-score songs. These three, while potentially unnecessary to the overall flow of the score, give the listener a few moments to step back from Andrews' music.

With such a great music companion at its side, it's hard not to enjoy a film like Me and You and Everyone We Know. I appreciate the attention to detail that July put into constructing a soundtrack that doesn't compete with her film. Too many times directors simply take some of their favorite songs and slap them together for the purpose of having something in their film. Only on rare occasion is the soundtrack portion of the film composition looked at as something that adds to the final product. Miranda July and Mike Andrews have certainly succeeded here by creating one of the best soundtracks of the year.
