What are legends if not for reinventing -- and/or hyper-inflating into Hollywood summer fare? In retooling the Arthurian legend for the goth-beguiled video game age, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer did away with details small (the lady in the lake, sword in the stone, etc.) and large (this Arthur is actually Eastern European, by way of Rome). Composer Hans Zimmer picks up that gauntlet, producing an orchestral score bristling with massed brass, chorus and percussion -- if little of the indigenous mysticism that made his work on Gladiator/ so rewarding. What there is of that precious commodity is frontloaded via the song "Tell Me Know (What You See)," his evocative opening collaboration with Clannad's Moya Brennan. From there, Zimmer emphasized this version's Eastern conceits with a half-dozen suites of cues that thunder in the Russian classical tradition -- and all the melodic range of "Jingle Bells." Zimmer--not to mention Poledouris--has done it better, but fans of outsized orchestral Gothic moodfests may yet take this one to heart. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Good music.......2007-05-16

I'm a huge Hans Zimmer fan, his scores are rich and deep. This is not his best, but it's still a great listen.

2 out of 5 stars Want to hear Gladiator II?.......2007-04-12

In the end, this is the only relevant question; do you want to hear a more melodramatic version of Gladiator? More melodramatic, you ask?
And you better believe it, Hans Zimmer actually managed to blow up his sound from Gladiator even more, and I really didn't think this was possible, mainly because I thought it would sound utterly pathetic and over the top. And make no mistake, Zimmer's King Arthur is just that.

I am reviewing this score in retrospect, and it is truly fascinating to do that. When you look at other composers and make a little journey to their past, you usually find more creativity. The further back you go, the more original and fresh music you find. With Hans Zimmer, it's the opposite. With each year you go back, his scores just get more dreary, and that's saying alot because his latest works also don't really qualify as schoolbook examples for colourful scoring.

From Gladiator to Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Hans Zimmer has yet to come forth with a truly fresh and unique score. Zimmer never, ever, not in a million years, escapes his usual box. And King Arthur is no exception whatsoever. From the get go, 20 horns are amassed and play a overly simplistic motif somewhere between a and A, the strings mush together in midrange, melodramatic chords, and dwell in the shallow realm of overbearing dullness.
I don't understand how an artist - and the art of film composing is severely underrated - can be content with repeating the same thing over and over. If I were Hans Zimmer, I would be embarassed by now to even write one more note for that droning bass.
To top it all off, Zimmer incorporates an Enyaesque voice that is easy on the ears, but in the end signifies nothing, does nothing and does all that with an amazing lack of substance.

That is, amongst others, the major difference between a serious film composer and Hans Zimmer: a good and skillful film composer takes an average film like King Arthur and makes it sound like something worthwhile. Hans Zimmer on the other hand embraces mediocrity and underlines it to create an even more average film.

5 out of 5 stars King Arthur.......2007-04-09

I recently purchased this particular soundtrack, and i would have to say it is awesome. Hans Zimmer is a master at what he does. The music suits the film and since I loved the film I had to get the soundtrack. I loved the song Tell Me Now by Moya Brennan, and Another Brick in Hadrians Wall is the best song im my opinion on the soundtrack. Overall I'm so glad I bought this soundtrack and I rate it up there with the likes of Gladiator, Pirates of the Carribean. Keep up the good work Hans

4 out of 5 stars Hans' Best.......2007-03-12

Hans Zimmer is a film composer with dozens and dozens of scores under his belt. Many who do not collect or even listen to film scores know his name. However, much if his film music sounds very similar and lacks a complex edge that other compose like John Williams, James Horner, and James Newton Howard deliver.

That said, King Arthur is Hans' most intriguing score to date. Backdraft and Gladiator (overrated) were very good, but this score is a departure from Hans' usual motifs. The only bad part for me(not related to the music itself) is that there are only seven tracks and each are very long. I like shorter tracks so I can pinpoint the themes or variations I want to lsiten to, but this is extremely minor. The music is great, and I reccommend you go enjoy Hans' best music yet.

4 out of 5 stars All Hail King Hans!.......2007-02-25

I must say that the score for "King Arthur" is another guilty pleasure from Hans Zimmer. Starting with the beautiful song 'Tell Me Now (What You See)', as sung by Clannad's Moya Brennan, Zimmer sets the tone for the amazing adventures of Arthur, a misfit that would later become a king and the creator of Camelot.
There is another theme, a more epic one, that starts the track 'Woad To Ruin' as we see a scene where Arthur and his men ride their horses. It's fantastic. And the way that Zimmer segues that tune into an instrumental variation of 'Tell Me Now (What You See)' is simply marvelous. The action music heard of this album is also terrific, and there is drama that keeps this album in good balance.
This is not as much a guilty pleasure as "The Last Samurai", but Hans Zimmer keeps the listener in awe with his musical sensibilities. This is a fine CD.

I bought this CD with certain hesitation because it is a soundtrack. However, when hearing it the subtle sounds, the masterful interpretations, the beautiful voices of Marjorie Vance and Elisabeth Guy-Kummer and the master direction of Rene Clemencic, moved my soul tremendously. La Princesse Elide, Carnaval et Revolte, Armande and La Mort de Moliere will be, for sure, amongst the favourites of most listeners of this not to be missed album, a rare find in Amazon.com although normal in Amazon.fr. And hear carefully to the compelling percussions in La Foire de Toulouse. Buy and enjoy.

The early-music group led by Rene Clemencic puts on a tremendous performance in this soundtrack disc of the 1978 film MOLIERE. This compilation allows you to sample the consort's instrumentals (uniquely historical) their lively interpretations, excellent vocals by the Deller consort, plus original Clemencic compositions. A great way to introduce yourself to this reknowned group of international artists.

4 out of 5 stars A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06

I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."

Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.

The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.

Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!

    Album Description

This powerful orchestral score is Pozner's ambitious follow-up to his original score for the 2003 epic documentary Russia: Land of the Tsars (History Channel), which was nominated for a 2004 News and Documentary Emmy® Award.

Gary Pozner's rock-n-roll roots (he is a former member of Tom Tom Club, with former Talking Heads) are nowhere to be found in this score. Instead, listeners will be transported in time to medieval England, where sounds of plucked strings are accentuated beautifully by rich brass, driving percussion, and haunting vocals. As an added treat, Pozner makes charming use of the penny whistle and low whistle, played sparingly yet effectively in this recording. Lovers of Celtic music will especially appreciate this soundtrack.

The album opens with "For a Thousand Years," an intense and multi-layered piece which whets the listener's appetite for the rich melodies to come. The haunting "Prepare for Battle" features the low whistle and simple percussion, with an accelerando that gives the listener a heightened sense of urgency. "Peasant Dance" is a beautifully melodious piece, the many countermelodies of which suggest celebration, joy, suspense, and sorrow all at one time.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars a marvelous, atmospheric soundtrack.......2004-12-16

This is music that seems to take us back to another time and place; we can almost see the thick fog and feel the damp earth under our feet...it has a palpable visual quality, as well as being a melodic, rhythmic and beautifully crafted musical experience.
The thirty-five tracks often stream one into the other with mellow moods, broken up by masculine rhythms with percussion and brass, like "Barbarian Attack", "Battle of Badon Hill", and the glorious finale of "The Britons".

The instrumentation is lovely, with a Celtic flair. Very effective is the use of voices on many of the tracks, giving the music a dreamy, moonlit quality. Some of my favorite moments are "Ancient Glory", with the strings holding the rhythm while the brass plays the melody, the majestic sound of "Quest for the Holy Grail", and the haunting "Years Pass".

Gary Pozner, an extremely talented and versatile musician and composer who also wrote the excellent score for the History Channel's production of "Russia--Land of the Tsars", has with "The Quest for King Arthur" written a memorable soundtrack that will be enjoyed for years to come.
A delight to listen to and slip into the sensory atmosphere of its sounds, it also makes great background music if you want something dramatic as you work, study or read.
    Total playing time is 46'57.

5 out of 5 stars A Television Soundtrack With Motion Picture Qualities.......2004-11-30

The Quest for King Arthur was an exceptional historical look at the legend that aired some time on the History Channel before the major release of the Antoine Fuqua motion picture. Normally one would not expect a riveting score from a documentary, especially one that never saw the silver screen. But here we have an acception. Gary Pozner composed and produced this amazing score. In this score he uses a mix of string instruments, wind instruments, and vocals. The entire score has the feel of a major motion picture score and could make an excellent one at that after editing it to adapt a picture that's feature length.

The album as a total of 35 tracks, which brings up the difference between a motion picture and a historical documentary. Each track is short, the longest being just over 2 minutes, and the shortest being around 30 seconds. If you've ever seen a piece on the History Channel or Discovery you would know that there is lots of narration, so naturally the score would be more segmented than a motion picture.

What Gary Pozner does here that I like so much is create the authentic feel of the culture and time period. His music is comparable to Hans Zimmer's (my all time favorite composer). I put this King Arthur score versus Hans Zimmer's score for the King Arthur film. Gary Pozner focuses on a not so over the top score and captures the feel of the era. My favorite track here is the "Peasant Dance", which sounds very genuine. Most people can argue that Hans Zimmer's scores all sound the same, which is true and not true. Yes, Hans Zimmer uses similar instruments and synthesizers in his scores, but Hans also incorporates, like Gary Pozner, cultural instruments that are appropriate to the film, just not as much. If Hans Zimmer were to keep a subtle score for King Arthur then it would not possess the "blockbuster" appeal that I'm sure Bruckheimer was aiming for. In Gary Pozner's case, a television piece on the History Channel cannot be too over the top because then it will distract from the information being presented to the audience, which is the entire purpose. What Pozner does is create an exceptional score that brings the feel of the time era that the documentary is focusing on. This is a must for Hans Zimmer fans. Also look for Gary Pozner's work on the Emmy Nominated, Russia: Land of the Tsars. (...)

    3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable.......2004-10-15

This is Pozner's second soundtrack release on his Whirled Music label. He appears to feel more at easy with the Celtic sounds on this album than he did with Russian sounds on his "Russia: Land Of The Tsars." He probably was granted a larger music budget for this documentary, and he doesn't miss the chance to make more out it. The orchestrations sound richer than they did on his former work.
The score rests on three pillars: a mystical Celtic voice, percussion-driven battle music and medieval folk. This gives the album the necessary variation. The style of the music somewhat resembles Goldsmith and Zimmer.

If you like medieval film music or documentary music, then this is a great album to have. I still have complaints. I still think there could have been less clip-length tracks on the album and I still think the music is too much of a potpourri of themes and colours. This was my major complaint of his "Russia: Land Of The Tsars."

I hope Mr Pozner continues to develop his music, this album is in many ways better than his former.

    This one gets three stars

    4 out of 5 stars A Profound Musical Score.......2004-10-13

Musician/composer/producer Gary Pozner has incredible artistic range and depth, as evidenced by his musical score THE QUEST FOR KING ARTHUR. This soundtrack is a stunning menagerie of compositions that vividly recreates the dangerous yet exotic medieval world of Arthur, of the Saxons and Britons. The haunting audio readily conjures up images of Tolkien's Middle Earth, images of 'Braveheart'--even fleeting and fiery images from 'Gladiator.' The orchestration--the musical craftmanship and vocals--is excellent.

With thirty-five tracts this CD offers incredible variety and range, yet several of the cuts are under a minute in length, often just over 30 seconds in length. This proved to be a distraction for me, as I was unable to get into the flow and rhythm of the shorter pieces. Yet the distraction is a minor one; THE QUEST FOR KING ARTHUR aptly demonstrates that Mr. Pozner is a musical force to be reckoned with.
    --D. Mikels

5 out of 5 stars This score is stunning! A must for LOTR or Enya fans.......2004-09-27

If you like Lord of the Rings or Celtic music such as Enya or Adiemus, you will love the score of "The Quest for King Arthur." Composer Gary Pozner, who's been nominated for Emmy awards for his scores of History Channel specials, has absolutely outdone himself with this extraordinary music.

Pozner draws from Celtic traditional songs and instruments and adds his own mix of film music to create an exciting set of musical segments. As I listened, I wanted to go get the DVD and see what "Quest" was all about--I haven't seen the film but now I really want to. Now, that's one powerful score. This music stands on its own, however, and there's a lot on this CD. My absolute favorite on the CD was "At the Dawn" (track #26) The sense of foreboding and the "sound" of a sunrise were wonderful. Track #8 "The Lady of the Lake" was perfect in the way it conveyed mystery, magic and beauty. Wow.

I'm giving this FIVE STARS and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Absolutely stunning. If this score doesn't take some sort of prize, I will be completely astonished.

I like this album, it includes a wide varity of songs fron the different operas. The sound quality is a bit like a record, which thew me off for a bit. If you like that sound then this is a good recording for, but if you want digital clarity this is not for you.

4 out of 5 stars Engrossed With An Honor.......2007-01-08

I am to review this soundtrack. Enlightening as "The Last Samurai" it is filled with many different pieces. The movie sounds phenomenal, and although I've never seen the movie, it has a wonderful backing. The best song would have to be "All of Them"
