When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaborated on the Academy Award®-winning Saving Private Ryan, an abiding passion to further honor the young fighting soldiers of World War II was born in both men, resulting in Band of Brothers, an ambitious 10-part miniseries based on historian Stephen Ambrose's account of a 101st Airborne regiment as it fought its way across Europe. In scoring the sweeping project, Michael Kamen has eschewed much of the martial music familiar from past war epics in favor of the quiet, largely introspective sound that's informed modern battle films from Platoon through Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. And if his reverential, often somber tones capture the dignity of the soldiers and the gravity of the events, they sometimes do so at the expense of other human dimensions--and the lively pop music of the '40s. Still, Kamen's work strikes an impressive balance, fusing the pastoral with subtle modern rhythm touches and utilizing spare piano solos, a darkly ironic use of Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, and a memorable, elegiac main theme. --Jerry McCulley

1 out of 5 stars Wrong artist!!!.......2007-05-23

It wasn't Michael Kamen who wrote the Requiem of a Soldier song. It was written originally by Amici Forever Opera for the Band of Brothers producers, by request. I think it is sad that they are putting Michael Kamen's name on this, letting him take credit for Amici's fine work.

5 out of 5 stars Band of Brothers.......2007-03-10

I just recently saw this series on DVD. Every time a new episode started,I was treated to the excellent opening theme. This album will bring enjoyment to all that are familiar with the series and really enjoyed all the music.

5 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds.......2007-01-24

The movie Band of Brothers is great, and the music is fabulous. Kamen has written such beautiful music. This CD is very easy to listen to and rather soothing. The vocals of the Title Song include beautiful passages of tenor voices. This CD is definitely on my list for those lazy Sunday afternoons in front of the fireplace with a good book.

5 out of 5 stars a gracious respect to those who served in the last Great War.......2007-01-14

A stunningly beautiful tribute by the London Metropolitan Orchestra. Includes most major songs that are played throuoght the equally stunning journeys of the soldiers. A few of my favorites are : 'Band of Brothers Suite One' (possibly one of the greatest crescendos ever), 'Winters on Subway' with gentle harmony and main theme weaved together beautifully, 'Bastogne Headscarf' with a soft and slow melody and finally 'Points: Band of brothers Requiem' (includes voices of a chorus humming along with the main theme. a very relaxing and pleasant CD, great to listen to while working.

The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

The lineup of composers is a Who's Who in the world of film music ~ John Addison, Tomaso Albinoni, Kenneth J. Alford, Paul Anka, John Barry, Arnold Bax, Elmer Bernstein, Eric Coates, Carl Davis, Klaus Doldinger, Antonin Dvorak, Benjamin Frankel, Gerald Fried, Hugo Friedhofer, Jerry Goldsmith, Ron Goodwin, Bernard Herrmann, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Jerome Moross, Alfred Newman, Clifton Parker, Alan Rawsthorne, Ryvichi Sakamoto, Lalo Schifrin, Gerard Schurmann, David Shire, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, Ralph Vaughan Williams, John Williams, Gabriel Yared and Hans Zimmer ~ set the stage for compositional human drama while exploring the deepest troves of musical emotion ~ one masterpiece after another, each cue manages to display both a convincing authenticity of the times and places ~ experience every tracks passion and skill for striking the exotic orchestral colors, explosive power and spectacular works of full large scale orchestral arrangements previal at every turn.

2 out of 5 stars Not what is should have been.......2007-05-05

Of course I would simply be rehashing what the majority have been saying: This is not a soundtrack, but a collection of 60s tunes you can get off Limewire.

I haven't found out yet why this only had Michael Kamen's main theme and closing theme and omitted Mason Daring's outstanding work for Spider or James Newton Howard's piece for Apollo 11.

The two stars are for Michael Kamen (Rest in Peace). As for the rest of the music, I either own some of it or my Mom has it!

Wait until the studio wises up and figures out how to release original music. Forget this disc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Soundtrack.......2005-10-07

Wonderful CD, that really brings you back to the series and the time that the Apollo events took place. Although the cd contains only two tracks from Michael Kamen (opening and ending theme) the cd is still absolutely worth buying. It would not however be such a bad idea to accompany the release of the Signature Edition of From The Earth to the Moon with a new soundtrack as well containing more of the brilliant music composed by Michael Kamen. Till then we just have to be satisfied with the two tracks on this cd.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't even leave the ground!.......2005-09-07

Some of the prettiest music I've heard on a soundtrack ever is played during this mini series. What were they thinking! The song played during the episode "Spider" when the LEM was completed is what made me go out and purchase this. The mixture of oboe, mandolin, clarinet and french horns we so wonderful with the repeating melody that I can hear the entire orchestration in my head note for note. Between that exclusion and so many others, I was so disappointed that I immediately gave it away. I can gather the songs online that they have on this CD all by myself so I can't think of any reason anyone in their right mind would bother buying this. If I could give this 2 negative stars, I would. This is just like a BLACK HOLE....don't let it suck you in!!!

3 out of 5 stars Bought it for the Kamen tracks..........2005-09-04

As others have already noted, it would have been nice if more of the series' original score music was included on this CD, but the track listing is there for anyone to see prior to purchase. I'm curious as to why there are a dozen reviews of this CD posted by one particular reviewer here ...what's the point of that?

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed... (stars are only For Michael Kamin).......2002-04-13

It pays to not assume.... (read the fine print)
I suppose its my own fault for assuming that the music on this CD was the SCORE not the SOUNDTRACK, terms that are often misused.
The real selling point of the music for the Earth to the Moon Series, is of course, the SCORE. The "throwins" like the Byrds, and other 60's memorabilia, is not what a new CD should be about. I HAVE the 60's retro tracks in 12 other forms.. How about something NEW here.
I am sure that Michael Kamin can rerelease his theme on another compilation of his own, but what about the other music.. How and when can we get to that? Maybe never. More shallow thinking from record companies.

Rhino has lovingly created this compilation of the Dorsey brothers' film music, and the resulting 21 tracks all make for a fun listen of some of the finest musical work the siblings performed. Tunes from Jimmy's I Dood It ("Star Eyes," "So Long, Sarah Jane") and Lost in a Harem ("Noche de Ronda," "I Know It's Wrong") and Tommy's Thrill of a Romance ("Battle of the Balcony Jive," "The Guy with the Slide Trombone") are all highlights. The pair's melding of Dixie and pop idioms is near perfect. And though it's an album of contrasts--Jimmy's ensemble specialized in playing fast and swinging hard, while Tommy's went for mood and tone--all of the tunes originate from the early '40s, a great vintage when both Dorseys were in their prime, working for MGM. Nostalgia abounds. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars tommy and jimmy dorsey.......2004-07-27

this CD is tremendous. 'well, git it' and 'one o'clock jump' are highlights as are 'star eyes' and 'opus one'. the swinging in stereo is great; i could play this CD every week and never get tired of it. the dorseys never disappoint. this CD could make a fan out of someone who never even heard of the dorsey brothers.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-03-10

Along with every one else's comments, some of these tracks are true STEREO recordings! Much, much better sounding than what the record companies were offering at the time!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Galore.......2004-02-14

SWINGIN IN HOLLYWOOD is unique because it features some of the best of the Dorsey brothers from the days when they were in their prime plus good music from World War II era movies. There is plenty of nostalgia here for both big band fans and movie buffs. The vocalists include Bob Eberly, The Pied Pipers, Helen O'Connell, Dick Haymes, Nancy Walker, Jo Stafford, Paul Carley, Marilyn Maxwell and Bob Allen.

The Dorsey brothers made eight films for MGM. Jimmy specialized in speed as in "One O'Clock Jump" from the movie I DOOD IT in 1943. Tommy was a master of mellow sounds as in "Katie Went To Haiti" from the film DUBARY WAS A LADY which was also made in 1943.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! Them Dorsey boys sure knew how to SWING IT!.......2002-06-22

If you want to know what SWING and The Big Bands were all about, then get this phenomenal CD. It presents original soundtrack performances recorded by both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey with their respective bands during the 1940s at MGM. Most of these tracks have never been released before, and if you're used to hearing this kind of music in scratchy form derived from old discs, wait until you hear the crystal clarity of the selections here. My favorite track? The unbelievable break-neck speed performance of "One O'Clock Jump" by Jimmy and his boys. You can't go wrong with this CD. A winner!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!! Dorseys.......2002-04-28

Rino-RD75283 Really great bands, when the music world revolved around Big Bands. Movies! Glitter! Fun!! Both Dorseys, Jimmy and Tommy. Made some good movies and truly great Swinging and Romantic music.
The extended version of Jimmy's One O'clock Jump is worth the price by itself.

You would probably like Hep CD59, also, The two great bands on the smame shows from Casino Garden September 1946. Battle of the bands. Let the battles begin!!!
