Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Like a great mix tape, the soundtrack to High Fidelity feels like it was assembled by a true music fanatic. Interspersing selections from cult favorites both old (Love, the 13th Floor Elevators) and new (Smog, Stereolab), it provides a window into the mind of the film's main character, a record store owner who's better able to express his love for a rare 45 than for his longtime girlfriend. --Steven Stolder

Nick Hornby's novel about a middle-aged, obsessive record-store owner and his struggle with growing up in an adult world indifferent to the finer points of soul music was a sharp commentary on life, love, and a decades-long affair with popular music. If any movie has to have a decent soundtrack it's this one. And it does. Perhaps a little light on soul (Stevie Wonder is a hip pick, but how about Arthur Alexander or even Otis Redding?), it specializes in cult and indie bands that should be familiar to many. The Velvet Underground, Love, the 13th Floor Elevators, and the Kinks honor the old school, while Royal Trux, Stereolab, and Smog represent the newest wave. Elvis Costello appears with a strong pick from an odd era (early '80s), and his greatest imitator, John Wesley Harding, is featured as well. This probably should have been a box set--you end up wanting more.--Rob O'Connor

3 out of 5 stars Could have put better songs.......2007-03-29

This cd has lots of good songs, but it didn't have a lot of the songs i wanted.

5 out of 5 stars top 5 sound tracks of all time.......2006-08-07

This cd completely mirrors what the film is about. The movie is about the owner of an eclectic record store. The sales staff are snobbish about the inventory and will not just sell to anyone.

There is a great variety of cool music here. Works that are so different from each othe yet they all stream together.

Buy this for the familiar stuff and then get turned on to the more eclectic stuff

5 out of 5 stars Crucial track missing!.......2006-08-01

The lists above, although informative and very well collected, are missing one of the most important tracks in the whole film:

Cats and Dogs by the Royal Trux. This is the track Rob plays in the record store having bet his staff that he would sell 4 copies of it.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Good soundtrack, but not Great .......2006-01-13

I keep this CD handy at work because it has a good variety of songs; the only drawback is that I wish it had more songs that were played in the film - I know Cusack probably didn't have the clearance for every single song, but I think there was enought for at least a 2CD set, which would have been better (in my opinion). Nonetheless, I'd still buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars I Listen To It All The Time.......2005-06-01

It's hard to know what I like best: the book, the movie, or the soundtrack. ALL of them are wonderful in their own way. The language of Nick Hornby. The crazy antics of Jack Black. But even though I love the first two, I think the soundtrack is the best of all. It has something for all moods. It has classics. It has foreign music. I love to play it over and over again in my car. I highly recommend it to anyone who loved the movie.
